"The Geology of the Cochenour Willans mine, Red Lake district, was described by J. P. Nowlan in the Jubilee Volume. The complexity and intense alteration of the rocks obscured any clear relationship between ore and structure, and Nowlan recognized that future work might greatly modify the ideas then existing. This has proved to be the case. Subsequent detailed work has established the stratigraphic sequence in the Keewatin formations which are the host rocks of the orebodies, and has shown that the principal orebodies are confined to two adjoining bands of tuff.On this basis, it is now possible to map the complex structures with greatly increased accuracy. The amount of drilling and underground exploration required to find new ore has been much reduced, and indicated ore reserves are now substantially greater than at any time in the past. Daily production in 1955 averaged 187 tons per day at 0.578 ounces of gold per ton.The sequence of Precambrian events in the mine area is summarized in the following table:Intrusion of post-ore dykes.Ore formation.Intrusion of post-faulting, pre-ore dykes.Deformation: folding and shearing; alteration; faulting.Timiskaming sedimentation.Unconformity.Keewatin: volcanics and sediments, host rocks of the orebodies, described in detail in the next section.KeewatinFrom oldest to youngest, the Keewatin rocks in the mine area can be divided into six formations, which have been given local names:“Grey"" LavaA fine-grained dacitic to andesitic lava, amygdaloidal and locally containing well formed pillows. Certain areas are sheared and chloritized to a degree that makes identification difficult. The rocks are carbonatized throughout; the most persistent carbonate veins parallel the upper contact. DISCUSSION AT QUEBEC MEETING MR. A. V. CORLETT: With drill holes radiating from a common point, is loading carried to the collars, and do you undertake to distribute the powder evenly? MR. R. V. PORRITT: When the collars of the holes, particularly the diamond-drill holes, are close together, two out of three holes are loaded only to within six or seven feet of the collars, and the intervening holes are loaded close to the collars. When the collars are farther apart, the holes are loaded close to the collars. No spacers are used, and the holes are filled solid with powder, this applying particularly to the diamond-drill holes, except, of course, where the collars are close together and some holes are not loaded close to the collars. MR. J. G. L. McCREA: I would like to enquire in respect to the various efforts made to reduce the cost of diamond drilling to the lowest point, what is. the relative cost of the solid bit to the standard bit? It would seem that the solid bit has the higher cost. MR. PORRITT: The non-coring or solid bit gives a slightly lower diamond cost than the coring bit. With the coring bit, the greatest diamond loss is on the inside stones, apparently due partly to vibration, but mainly to the core blocking against these stones. This condition, of course, does not apply with the non-coring bit. Our experience is that the non-coring bit, which drills out a much greater area, has a diamond consumption slightly less than the coring bit. The non-coring bit is sturdier, and is far less liable to damage in starting holes and in drilling through cracked or broken ground.

Many of us are familiar with the history of oil in the Province of Ontario, but for the benefit of those who have never heard the story I will repeat it. In 185 7 J. H. Williams, of Hamilton, an old-country Scotchman, who had the advantage of experience gained from the primitive methods used for refining the oil collected at seepages in Roumania, heard of the "gum beds" along Black creek in Enniskillen township, Lambton county. He erected a small plant in the bush and refined illuminating oil, where the village of Old Springs now stands. The labor of collecting this thick ?gummy substance from the sluggish water of the creek, prompted him to dig a well, the next year ( 1858), in the hope of obtaining a greater quantity. When his excavation reached a gravel bed on top of the rock, oil, resembling "lubricating oil of commerce", rose several feet. Several of these wells were dug and his refining business flourished. The following year the Drake well, in Pennsylvania, was drilled into rock, resulting in an oil find which encouraged one James Shaw to make a similar attempt on Black creek. With a spring-pole drill he completed his well in the spring of 1861 to a depth of 160 feet, and at that depth struck a gusher that flowed uncontrolled for several days. Great excitement followed and the village of Oil Springs had a mushroom growth. The Petrolia field was discovered in 1865. Lick followed up the Thames with a spring-pole rig testing the formations along that river and discovered the original Bothwell field in 1865. During the sixties wells were drilled in many counties in southwestern Ontario.

MR. J. A. H. CHURCH: The salient feature would seem to be that the thickness of the seam, in our coals at any rate, is the main factor in predisposition to spontaneous ignition. The evidence, incomplete it must be admitted, in the Saskatchewan and British Columbia fields, and complete in the Alberta field to my mind, shows this up very strongly. The German report on the upper Silesian coal fields definitely fixes the critical thickness at 13 feet, the British report goes far beyond this figure by stating that liability to ignition increases with the thickness of the seam over four feet. Before discussing the Alberta fires it would be well to note an error on page 12 -the probable cause of the fire in the Frank Mine should read "Spontaneous near fault. Heating first discovered 1909". Of the six fires attributed to spontaneous ignition all the seams were identical or in excess of the critical thickness mentioned in the German report. If there be any reason in the foregoing it is high time some forethought were taken to adopt some definite system of laying out the workings of such seams not so much on the outcrop districts as with a view to the future operation to the dip. Seams approaching 13 feet in thickness which to date have shown no disposition towards heating during the extraction of the outcrop areas may well cause infinite trouble or indeed total loss when the ventilating pressures increase as increase they must to the dip. This state of affairs can be combatted only by the adoption of a correct system of working and the provision of numerous airways of as large an area as may be compatible with the physical characteristics of the particular seam.

In this paper, the tribological and electrochemical corrosion properties of Al2O3/polymer nanocomposite coatings were studied using a micro-hardness test, a single-pass scratch test, an abrasive-wear test, and finally an electrochemical technique such as potentiodynamic polarization measurement, The coatings containing Al2O3 nanoparticles showed improvement in scratch and abrasive resistance compared with polymer coatings; this improvement is attributed to the dispersion hardening of Al2O3 nanoparticles in polymer coatings, Corrosion test results showed that the embedded Al2O3 nanoparticles in the polymer matrix do not sacrifice the corrosion resistance of the polymer itself.

The social and environmental problems presented by the location of a large zinc/ lead ore body within one mile of a thriving town are described. The development problems are social, involving the education of the in habitants , and environmental, requiring the development of a planning strategy and the evolution of a baseline and post -operational monitoring system. The necessity for an environmental-impact assessment and a thorough baseline study is emphasized. The continuing psycho-social consideration of community reaction is advocated.

A laboratory investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of different binding agents in a paste backfilling operation suitable to be used in a sulphide-rich environment. Different combinations of Portland cement and fly ash type C as well as ferrous slag were used as the binding agents. The unconfined compressive strength of the samples was measured for extended curing periods. The results indicate that the addition of 3% slag in the binding agent mix could produce strengths up to 0.5 MPa in the samples under investigation. For higher binding contents, the addition of Portland cement will lead to higher availability of calcium hydroxide and calcium aluminate, which are susceptible to deterioration from the phenomenon known as sulphate attack. Using slag, on the other hand, will reduce the permeability, availability of calcium hydroxide, and dilute the calcium aluminate ions reducing the susceptibility of the samples to sulphate attack. However, gypsum will form which could have the same detrimental effect on the strength of the treated matrix. Therefore, special attention must be given to the content and properties of agents used to activate the pozzolanic properties of the slag.

Production optimization programs, relatively common today, provide increased production, increased availability of assets and, in many cases, improved quality. They generally ignore the energy question altogether. Production Energy Optimization combines reductions in energy consumption with production improvements to reduce the cost per unit of production while improving emissions reporting. An energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations is a critical component of Production Energy Optimization. This strategy must support the financial and operational integrity of the business. Developing a successful energy strategy requires a well structured approach such as following: ??Understanding where energy is being used and why, ??Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures, ??Driving visibility to targets and results, ??Re-evaluating continuously. "The coals of the Sydney and Pictou coalfields are generally classed as high volatile ""A "" and medium volatile bituminous coals but there are significant differences within and even beyond this rank. These are related to the observation that the coalification in eastern Canada is essentially post-deformational, resulting in a general increase of rank with depth in individual seams.Exploration drilling in the Sydney coalfield has shown that the rank increases offshore to M. V. bituminous at mineable depths and in the Pictou field to L. V. bituminous coal. There is also a marked easterly shift in rank within one seam at the same depth at Sydney, with the result that M. V. coal will be reached sooner in the Donkin Reserve area (at 700 m depth) than in the Lingan-No , 26 Reserve area (at 900 m depth). These rank changes are important for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke as shown with coke stability predictions based on petrographic analyses. The L. V. coal of the Pictou field can be used for blending purposes and is the only known L. V. deposit of mineable thickness in eastern Canada.In addition, the vertical rank changes between seams have been studied in ten boreholes. They are not constant within the confines of the Sydney coalfield. Four separate areas can be recognized, each with different coalification gradients, which can be related to changes in the paleogeothermal gradients . Variations of 2.5 degrees to 6. 7 degrees CI IOO m are indicated and geological causes for these changes are suggested.IntroductionThe Sydney coalfield is the largest and most important field in eastern Can ad a, and although it has been in production some 200 years, the remaining ""demonstrated "" resources of 1.6 billion metric tons can extend its production capability for at least another 100 years. All coals mined are high volatile "" A"" bituminous and have been used for both thermal and metallurgical purposes. For the latter rank variations even of a minor scale are of critical importance for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke.The significance at the present time of the Pictou coalfield, which has only modest remaining "" demonstrated"" resources of 60 million metric ton s, lies in the discovery in 1975 of a 14-million-ton deposit of low volatile bituminous coal. It is the only known low-volatile coal in eastern Canada and is suitable for use as a blend for metallurgical coal. As such, it could supply the Sydney coke ovens for a period of 30 years at the current rate o f coke production and replace imported American low volatile coal.Consequently, coal rank studies of the Sydney and Pictou fields are important not only from a geological point of view, but also because of economic considerations."

The beneficiation of barite in mill tailings using an agglomeration technique has been demonstrated. Barite was selectively absorbed from a conditioned aqueous slurry into a collector oil by mechanically mixing slurry and oil. The resulting oil-bonded barite-containing agglomerate was washed, to remove gangue material, and further mechanically contacted with dilute H2SO4 This treatment resulted in the transfer of barite into the aqueous phase. Grades as high as '97% BaSO4, with recoveries of 80%, have been obtained using this technique.

PRESSURE information has earned a place of recognition to almost everyone interested in oil and gas production. This interest is due chiefly to the multitude of uses to which it can be put. A sub-surface pressure test, conducted for as little as $60, may yield data worth many times its cost. To the uninformed, the testing techniques may seem complex. Fundamentally, however, they consist merely of the application of common sense. At one time, sub-surface pressure data were used only in identifying individual well problems and in finding appropriate solutions. Today, it is generally acknowledged that sub-surface pres-sure .data are essential for the proper evaluation and exploitation of oil and gas pools. "This study is part of large and an ongoing investigation into the development of a light-weight and highly fluid mine fill for various applications in mining and civil operations. Foam mine fill is the new material proposed for backfilling mines, and is fabricated by mixing stable foam into a mixture of tailings, binders, and water. This paper investigates the effects of both binder dosage and the amount of foam used upon the mechanical and physical properties of foam fill, mainly in regards to compressive strength, porosity and density.Samples were prepared using tailings from a copper mine as the inert material, Normal Portland Cement as the main binding agent, and a foaming agent with a foam generator. Samples were cured for 7, 14 and 28 days and were then subjected to unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. Select samples were subjected to mercury intrusion porosimetry, so as to study the microstructural properties. An empirical model was then developed, using a response surface methodology to establish a relationship between the investigated parameters. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDThe disposal of mine tailings is a significant issue in the mining industry, particularly as mine production increases. Many mines re-use mine tailings for backfilling, which is a method for reducing environmental exposure to tailings, maintaining underground stability, and increasing ore recovery (Benzaazoua, Belem & Bussière, 2002).This paper introduces a new type of backfill called ‘foam mine fill’. This proposed backfill material is similar to cellular concrete, as air bubbles are entrained in cement or lime mortar, resulting in a cellular structure (Narayanan & Ramamurthy, 2000). Air voids can occupy up to 70% of the volume of concrete, which makes it light- weight, and thus can be used for a wide range of civil applications, including backfilling (Tarasov et al. 2010; Panesar, 2013). Unlike cellular concrete, the incorporation of air bubbles into a mixture of tailings, binder and water makes foam fill a potential new backfilling material. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation on foam fill samples found that pulp densities should be optimized before adding the foam, in order to produce consistent samples without foam segregation or losses (Hefni et al., 2014)."

I THINK it can be safely said that no mining operation, whetl1er open-pit or underground, is ever entirely free of water. It follows that every ton of ore bears a charge which represents, either directly or indirectly, the cost of keeping the mine workings as dry as possible. Water problems occur in all phases of mining operations. They cause difficult and costly drilling conditions during the exploration stage, they often seriously delay mine development, they can slow mine production and reduce efficiency, and they are a continued burden over the life of the mine. It is therefore in the interest of all mining men to be familiar with the methods and materials used for grouting. The most common grouting material is cement. Cement grouting is old and well established, and many engineers are familiar with its uses and limitations. Strip mining in Western Canada, though of considerable importance, is a fairly recent development for many of the operators in the district. Adding to the difficulty of unfamiliarity is the fact that a great deal of the stripping is done on pitching seams, for which the engineering and economic principles of setting the most advantageous strip ratio are not readily apparent. The novelty of the operation combined with the complexity of the principles involved can easily lead to misconceptions as to the determination of the economic ratio. Definition of Strip Ration There are two commonly accepted meanings of the term strip ratio: (1) The ratio of feet of overburden to be stripped per foot of coal recoverable. (2) The ratio of cubic yards of overburden per cubic yard or ton of coal. The first definition is inapplicable to pitching seams so, throughout this paper, strip ratio will be taken as the ratio of cubic yards of overburden to be removed per cubic yard of coal recoverable. Economic Ratio In the case of flat seams, the strip ratio is fixed by existing natural conditions, and the magnitude of this ratio determines whether stripping is economically feasible. With pitching seams, however, the strip ratio is a variable. On the outcrop, there is usually some coal which can be obtained with little or no stripping. As the work is carried down the pitch of the coal seam, the proportion of overburden continually increases until a point is reached where it is no longer economical to continue the operation. The question immediately arises as to the location of this point, and this resolves into the problem of determining the most favourable strip ratio, or, to use the accepted term, the economic ratio.

IT IS the purpose of this paper to show how the design of the larger slope hoists in use in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation has tended to evolve ta suit the particular conditions of operation. These hoists are all used for hauling coal in trains or trips of pit tubs up the mine slopes, which usually follow the dip of the seam . As the mine is developed to the dip and the slope grows in length, the length of the rope and the size of the hoist required to handle it rends to become extremely cumbersome. It has been found that the best economic conditions of hoisting are obtained when the length of the slope is limited to about seven or eight thousand feet. Beyond this length it is necessary to offset to one side of the line of slope and start a second or auxiliary slope, which will be served by its own hoist installed underground. With this hoisting distance as a basis, we find that we can economically hoist the outputs required, usually about 1,500 tans per eight hours per slope, by hoisting the coal in trips of about twenty boxes. This, on the grades obtaining, will require a rope of about l 1/4in. diameter, running at a speed of 1,200 ta 1,800 feet per minute, and requiring from 1,200 to 1,800 h.p. at the hoist shaft. The tendency is for the rope speeds of the surface hoists to be a little higher than the underground hoists which relay to them, so that the surface hoist has a small margin of time in hand. The oldest surface hoists were steam-driven, but, with few exceptions, these have given place to electric hoists. With the exception of one hoist, which was altered in design, the steam hoists have not had the opportunity of evolving in the same way as the electric hoists, and will not be mentioned any further.

ANON-CATARACTING (N-C) ball mill is so operated that the balls are not thrown in-ward at the top of their paths. The result is to maintain, in the mill, a quiescent pool in which classification will occur at a limiting size corresponding to the pulp density. N-C operation is produced by effecting proper relationship among mill speed, ball diameter, volume of ball load, and pulp density. Such operation is typified by the primary ball-mill operation of the Tennessee Copper Company, Copper-hill, Tenn., and the Cleveland Cliff Iron Company, near Ishpeming, Mich.

"AbstractThe Cargill phosphate deposit, located 32 kilometers southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario, was discovered by the Resource Development Group of International Minerals & Chemical Corporation in 1975 and has been evaluated through an extensive program of 190 drill holes, numerous chemical analyses, metallurgical tests, and engineering and economic studies.The Cargill alkalic complex, comprising principally car-bonatite and pyroxenite-amphibolite rocks, was intruded in to the rift system of the Kapuskasing High during late Precambrian time about 1,800 million year s ago, near the intersection of northeast- and northwest- trending faults. The Cargill complex is one of at least ten known alkalic complexes in or close to the Kapuskasing magnetic-gravity-high system and is expressed by an elongated, northeast- oriented, three-part magnetic anomaly 7.2 kilometers long by 2.8 kilometers wide . Weathering and leaching under assumed temperate to cool, moist climatic conditions , and controlled by faulting, shearing and/or initial petrographic variations within the carbonatite , developed a small, locally confined karst system in the car bonatite rocks and resulted in a thick enriched leached carbonatite zone, capped by troughs and sinks, filled with a residuum of apatite, goethite, clay and other minerals stable in the near -surface, oxidizing environment. Overburden is 5 to 165 meters thick."

From January to June 2007, the autoclave production at the Kidd Metallurgical Site was severely affected as a result of plugged discharge lines and extensive precipitation/crystallization of sulphates that caused massive scaling in different autoclave compartments. Work was performed at McGill University to understand the root causes. The crystallization of zinc and ferrous sulphate salts was investigated in terms of solubility measurements. Scale samples were characterized using chemical and mineralogical-spectroscopic analysis. In this paper, following a description of the Kidd zinc pressure leach operation, highlights from this investigation are presented and solutions used to overcome the problem are outlined.

A leaching process for recycling small car motor scraps dismantled from End- of - Life -Vehicles (ELV) was investigated using waste pickling acid in steel work. Steel parts of mortar scraps were leached by waste pickling acid and Cu wire was recovered as pure Cu in the process. Pickling acid solution after leaching could be recycled in an ordinary process for waste pickling acid solution. High grade FeSO4 agent could be produced using H2SO4 as a pickling solution.
