Currently in Canada there are 15 major mining companies with a minimum of $1 billion in market capitalization or net private value. This group forms the core of an important sector for Canada. The mining sector had gross revenues of about $35 billion in 1988. This compares to a Canadian GDP of $410 billion in 1988. There are at least three different sub-groups within the mining group, each facing the future with very different prospects for the coming years.

I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.

An attempt has been made to investigate the performance of green pellet formation of the Daye magnetite concentrate from the weak-magnetic separation plant. The optimum conditions for the commercial production of green pellets was found through experimental research. The satisfactory size range for balling is 75 ¦ 3 per cent -200 mesh. The suitable moisture content is between 8.7 and 9.1 per cent and the optimum amount of bentonite added is between 1.5 and 2.5 per cent. The emphasis is on the size of the feed materials since the grinding fineness, which can be obtained at the plant, at most is 78 per cent -200 mesh. If the optimum fineness for the pellet formation is above this value, this means that the concentrate must be re-ground before balling. The results from experiments showed that a good quality green pellet can be attained by using materials below 78 per cent -200 mesh, which provides a strong foundation for the commercial production of green pellets.

Automation in underground mining enhances safety and leads to economic efficiency. In the past many efforts have been made on the automation of longwall shearer operation. With respect to the ultimate goal of automation, ie self controlled operation, coal bed boundary detection is one of the key problems. For longwall human labor is necessary in order to detect the exact position of the coal seam to be excavated. The authors present a sensor concept based on infrared technology and pattern recognition which will solve this problem. The very harsh underground conditions set high demands on the implemented sensors. The combination of infrared sensors and powerful processing algorithms is part of the innovative concept for automation of the new Eickhoff Bergbautechnik GmbH SL 750 shearer loader. The multi-sensor automation system EiControlPlus which is designed for the complete detection of the machine environment fills in the gap in the coal-excavation automation by building a recognition system that turns the shearer loader into an 'intelligent machine' which is capable of detecting the correct position of the seam to be excavated and thus enables human-free coal mining.

The transgressive sedimentary sequence of the Noumea Basin contains rhyolitic lavas and less voluminous mafic and intermediate volcanics of shoshonitic affinities which erupted simultaneously during the late Cretaceous. The shoshonitic volcanism shows a trend froIn early mafic to younger evolved intermediate lithologies. The rhyolites are consistently calcalkaline. There is no evidence of mixing of the two magma types. The shoshonitic volcanism is the result of a short-lived subduction event related to spreading in the New Caledonia Basin and involved reactivation of an earlier esozoic subduction zone.

Education has always been a topic to rouse the interest of mining and metallurgical engineers, but the recent activities of the Education Committee of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy 1, 2, together with the moves throughout the Commonwealth to extend the field of technological education, have made the subject a very live one at the present time. The authors have felt it would be appropriate that on the occasion of the First Ordinary Meeting for 1950, in Victoria, some contribution should be forthcoming concerning the history, present status and possible future trends of mining and metallurgical education in this State. As for the past, the time approaches when there will be none having personal recollections of the beginning of Victorian mining schools or of the men who started them. As for the future, it is obvious that rapidly expanding metal-producing and metalconsuming industries will demand a greater output of competent graduates and diplomates. The era immediately ahead seems to be bristling with opportunities, but mining educators need to temper their enthusiasm for various policies and programmes with the realisation that they are helping to train men who will be leaders 15-20 years hence when the problems of industry and trials of life generally may be very different from what they are to-day.

Interest in the tantalum-niobium minerals has been greatly stimulated in Western Australia by the fact that these rare minerals occur at numerous localities in that State, and in the adjoining parts of the Northern Territory, sometimes in mineable concentrations, as at Wodgina and Greenbushes. A large proportion of the world's tantalum comes from these deposits. The late Dr. E. S. Simpson, in particular, made an extensive study of the chemistry and mineralogy of these minerals, and the following observations are based upon the examination of specimens which he and Mr. H. Bawley, Government Mineralogist of Western Australia, have submitted to me for examination from time to time. The fact that so many of the specimens have been analysed provides a unique opportunity for the interpretation of the phenomena observed in the polished sections.TANTALITE-COLUMBITE SERIESIt has long been considered, on the basis of crystallographic form, chemical analyses, and specific gravity measurements, that ferrotantalite (FeO. Taz05), manganotantalite (MnO. Taz05)' ferrocolumbite (FeO. Nbz0 5), and manganocolumbite (MnO. Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators' intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

The Ernest Henry mine is a transverse sublevel cave (SLC), which is relatively unique due to the 45 degree inclination of the orebody. To economically recover ore, each sublevel is horizontally offset from the previous level by around 25 m, depending on the orebody geometry. Mine development, slotting and initial production within this zone occurs in a high stress abutment that increases in magnitude at depth. These areas are seismically active and close to the hanging wall where cave propagation is yet to initiate. High stress conditions and the close proximity to the cave seismogenic zone results in challenging geotechnical conditions in the step out zone of each level and requires management of hazards including stress driven rockfalls, rock bursts and pillar failure.This paper outlines how these hazards were forecast using numerical modelling and geotechnical monitoring. Risk management techniques included dynamic ground support design, development of a new mine layout and extraction sequence as well as delayed re-entry into seismically active areas. Ongoing monitoring, instrumentation measurements and field observations were used to track the effectiveness of the controls.Future production levels are forecast to experience increasing stress and seismicity, which will increase demand on excavations and installed ground support. Many caving mines use numerical flow models to simulate mine production, forecast recovered ore grades and optimise the draw strategy. In sublevel caving (SLC) mines, the effects of blasting and fragmentation at an individual ring scale generally cannot be included in these models. Previous attempts to use results from marker recovery trials to calibrate numerical flow models have been limited due to difficulties in accounting for blasting effects at a ring scale. This paper outlines how an empirical criterion for blasting and fragmentation was used to attribute variable flow properties into a numerical flow model based on the blast design and modelled fragmentation. The flow model was then validated using data from a number of full scale marker recovery experiments. The result of this approach was a significant improvement in forecast accuracy when compared against the same modelled cave marker recovery without the inclusion of these blasting effects. Improvements in the flow model are currently being adopted within the mine scale model to further improve the accuracy of grade forecasting, optimise the draw strategy and increase net present value. The integrated modelling approach is also being used to simulate the effects of different drill and blast designs on cave recovery. It is suggested that, if implemented, the technique would lead to improved blast designs in other SLC mines, increase the value of marker trial data and reduce costs associated with large scale blast design trials.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2017. Responsible management of cyanide solutions and tailings on gold processing plants worldwide is an important aspect to these operations and is regulated via guidelines provided by the International Cyanide Management Code, an industry initiative designed to minimise cyanide risk to operators and the environment. Here we demonstrate the unprecedented causal relationships surrounding the saline (>14 000 mg/L total dissolved solids - TDS) and hypersaline (>50 000 mg/L TDS) cyanide solutions in gold plant tailings in the Central Goldfields of Western Australia, resulting in zero wildlife mortalities on three sites over the study period of almost one year. Wildlife interaction and ingestion is significantly lower than that experienced at other gold mine sites, with more rapid degradation of weak-acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide within the tailings storage facility (TSF). A rigorous chemical sampling using a novel æminimal accessÆ robotic sampler device and wildlife observation exercise was carried out at two hypersaline mine sites: Barrick Kanowna Belle (BKB) and Gold Fields St Ives (GSI) and one saline site, Barrick Granny Smith (BGS). The data was compared with available reported chemical sampling and wildlife observation data from a previously operational fresh water site (<2000 mg/L TDS) that had experienced wildlife mortalities, Case Study D (CSD). The comprehensive body of work, along with cyanide degradation test work carried out in the laboratory, was analysed via hypothesis development and testing, causation analysis and dynamic chemical modelling. The non-mortality effect on these sites appears to hold over a further four years of routine wildlife and cyanide monitoring by site personnel. Lower Miocene Maryville Coal Measures at Waitewhena Coalfield, in the Taranaki coal region, include seams of sub-bituminous coal up to 4 m thick. During coalfield exploration Fletcher Challenge Ltd drilled ten cored holes, all of which encountered at least one seam. Coal quality is variable. Ash ranges from six to 12 per cent and sulphur from 0.5 to three per cent. A basal seam, overlying the Lower Mokau Sandstone, appears to extend throughout the area under investigation. A rider seam, of variable thickness, closely overlies the main seam in most drillholes. The rider converges with the main seam to the north and vertical trends in coal properties suggest that the seams are united in some locations. A less extensive seam sometimes occurs at the top of the coal measures beneath the Upper Mokau Sandstone. The lithostratigraphy of the intervening coal measures is complex, and coexistence of fluviodeltaic, lagoonal/lacustrine, and marine depositional environments is provisionally inferred. Lateral variations in coal properties (clastic derived ash, volatile matter, inertinite, hydrogen), thickness of the sedimentary parting between the basal seam and rider, texture of the coal measure sediments, and distribution of the upper seam all indicate persistence of a relatively low lying northeast-trending zone which may have been structurally controlled. Available data indicate that coal measure accumulation was terminated by marine transgression from north to south.

Iron ore is AustraliaÆs largest commodity export and is vitally important to AustraliaÆs current and future prosperity. However, while major expansions are currently in progress to satisfy demand, the industry is also undergoing major transformations. Reserves of traditional high-grade Brockman ores that have underpinned the Australian iron ore industry since its inception are slowly being depleted and alternative ore types such as Marra Mamba bedded iron deposits, Yandi and Pannawonica channel iron deposits and magnetite deposits are now being developed. However, the impurity levels in some of these alternative ores are higher and they require blending and/or upgrading as well as an advanced knowledge of their downstream processing characteristics to facilitate cost-effective utilisation by overseas customers. The research challenge is to use advanced techniques for mineral exploration, ore characterisation, mineral beneficiation, agglomeration and sustainable processing to identify and develop innovative and breakthrough options for locating, unlocking and enhancing the value of AustraliaÆs iron ore resources. Furthermore, to sustain the steel industry and hence secure the demand for iron ore, there is a growing need to enhance the environmental and business performance of the industry through reductions in wastes and emissions. Therefore, cost-effective breakthrough and enabling technologies that massively cut waste generation, CO2 emissions and water consumption are also being developed. These include the use of renewable fuels and reductants, waste heat recovery and conversion of by-product slag into a saleable substitute for Portland cement. A comprehensive analysis of rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging: interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcore is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure. Both solution types rely on constant orientations (orientational stability) of the selected structure, but the internal solution actually provides its own test of orientational stability. External solutions are the norm in outcropping situations and internal solutions are invaluable in blind situations. In blind situations sequential "internal then external" solutions can be used respectively to provide a reference structure and then use this for subsequent external solutions at individual points downhole. Blind prospects can now be drilled and interpreted as easily as outcropping prospects. Each solution type has its own optimum requirements. External solutions are ambiguous for certain orientational relationships between the drillhole and the reference structure (for example, a perpendicular relationship), hence drillholes in which external solutions are planned should be designed to avoid these orientations. Internal solutions are ambiguous for straight drill paths, and are most unambiguously resolved when the drill path attains maximum drillhole dimensionality, that is, it occupies a wide variety of orientations in 3D space; hence drillholes in which internal solutions are planned should be designed as combinations of non-parallel holes or as individual strongly curved holes. For both solution types an understanding of the kind of structural fertility required leads to intelligent design of drill paths, which is termed structural drill targeting. It is distinct from spatial drill targeting, which is the process which defines and (x,y,z) point-or volume-target. Effective design of drilling programs requires both structural and spatial targeting. The external and internal solutions for vectorial parameters are implemented via (1) visual (qualitative), (2) stereographic, or (3) core orienting frame procedures. Each of these has its own advantages. Stereographic procedures have been simplified via the erection of a drillcore reference frame in which three fundamental angles are defined, and the formulation of an all-inclusive set of stereographic recipes for determining orientations from the measurement of these angles. Non- vectorial structural parameters comprise an ad hoc array of useful measures which are simply described by numbers. Examples are angles between structures, and density of structures. Such parameters (some of which provide useful vectors toward ore bodies) are invaluable in drillcore because they can be measured and recorded rapidly, without determining the orientation of the core. In a summary, non-oriented drillcore can now be structurally mapped exactly as if it were outcrop. Interpretation of the significant volume of unique structural information which is beginning to flow from this system can be optimised by using, in addition to the conventional cross section and longditudinal section, three new modes of presentation. The natural cross section is that section in space normal to a principal structure of interest. It is a section in which it is advisable to drill to obtain certain structural information, and in which the results need to be presented. A newly defined unique cross sectional orientational symbol is recommended for dramatic improvement in the quality of information presented in cross sections. Stacked level maps are a powerful adjunct to cross sections.

In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the orebody to enhance rock mass cavability is gaining acceptance in underground cave mining applications. Assisting cavability is becoming important as an increasing number of cave mines are being implemented in hard, deep and competent rock masses where clamping stresses are higher and cave column heights may be in excess of 1000 m. Propagating large caves to surface in such conditions can be challenging as risks such as slowed propagation and air gaps can develop during the process.Underground-based hydraulic fracturing is routinely used at Cadia East as a means of preconditioning the orebody to assist in cave propagation, fragmentation and seismicity reduction. This paper presents a summary of a surface-based hydraulic fracture program that was successfully implemented to assist in the propagation of the Cadia East Panel Cave 1 (CE-PC1) cave to surface through competent overlying rock masses. In this case study, the propagation of the CE-PC1 cave slowed as the cave grew past 750 m in height, initiating a Trigger Action Response Plan regarding the cave propagation rate. Surface-based hydraulic fracturing was subsequently used to stimulate the cave to propagate through the final 450 m to surface. Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.
