Rail, port and shipping charges represent 30 to 50 per cent of landed costs for Australian coal mines selling to Asia. This proportion is higher for sales to Europe, yet it is in Europe where Australian producers are aiming for increased market share. The landed cost of coal to the international customer is the key parameter which determines market competitiveness. The objective of this study is to examine Australian export coal competitiveness in terms of transport distance. The approach used examines world coking coal and steaming coal production and the transport distances between major exporting regions and importing countries. Reference is made to the importance of land transport costs and a comparative approach for emphasising the relative magnitude of this factor is developed. Models developed are examined in terms of Australia's exports and a conclusion is reached that a reduction in rail freight costs would be an effective measure for improving the competitiveness of Australia's coal industry.

The mining industry is quite often faced with declining selling prices for its products in the face of rising prices for the input cost resources that it uses. Blasting is a key activity within the mining system and has a vital role to play within the Mine to MillTM concept. It is therefore important that blasting makes a positive contribution to mine profit and productivity. There are several variables involved in considering the profitability and productivity of blasting. The rock types and structures, the bench height, the blast hole drill rig specifications, hole diameter, spacing and burden, explosive loading and initiation and blast size fragmentation. Productivity accounting is a methodology which is used elsewhere to give additional insights into the productivity and pricing factors that drive the financial performance of a business. Miners know intuitively that productivity and pricing influence costs and profit, but only with productivity accounting can the dollars involved be calculated. Drilling and blasting are part of a chain of unit operations in a mine. For an owner-miner, drilling and blasting would be considered as cost centres and a productivity accounting cost model approach would be relevant. On the other hand a contractor is likely to consider drilling and blasting as a profit centre, in which case a productivity accounting profit model approach would be appropriate. Both of these will be explained. The paper provides a basic outline of deterministic productivity accounting and demonstrates its application to blasting. Drilling and blasting data from a mine was obtained for a two-month period. The change in productivity and prices was calculated to obtain the dollar contributions from them towards the change in cost. It was determined that although there had been productivity dollar gains these were offset by larger pricing dollar losses, the net effect being that total drilling and blasting costs increased. The productivity accounting analysis gives the facts and the mine is in a position to establish priorities based on knowing the dollar contributions of each input used.

The grinding circuit at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) – Batu Hijau mine consists of two SABC (semi-autogenous milling, ball milling, pebble crushing) trains, including four 20'?×?33'6? ball mills that have been lined with steel liners since the commissioning of the plant in 1999. During 2011 and 2012 an industrial trial was conducted to evaluate Poly-Met liners (a combination of rubber and steel liners). These new liners were installed in two of the ball mills (ball mills 1 and 2) and operated in parallel with ball mills 3 and 4 with steel liners.The objective of the trial was to compare the plant performance with the Poly-Met and steel ball?mill liners with regards to wear life, mill throughput, grind size and total unit costs. The trial was conducted over the entire life of the liners. The evaluation methodology implemented consisted of frequent spot sampling around the ball mill circuits, complete surveys/audits in both ball mills, and detailed analysis of process data. Granulation of the iron ore blend and the additives is the foremost step in the agglomeration of iron ore fines to achieve a permeable bed during sintering, which is crucial for sinter productivity. This study investigated the granulation of four types of blends to determine the impact of granulation on bed permeability. The blends were granulated in a rotating drum at various moisture contents and their JPU permeability was measured at each moisture content in a permeability pot (diameter 95 mm and height 500 mm) at various flow rates. Several independent experiments were carried out to investigate the changes in permeability when mixtures of different particle size range (-1 mm and +1 mm) were introduced into a packed bed with a larger particle size range (-6.3 mm to +4.0 mm). The results revealed that the addition of particles in the -1 mm size range had a more pronounced negative impact on permeability compared to particles in the +1 mm size range. This can be attributed to the relatively higher energy losses (mainly inertial) associated with the presence of -1 mm particles in the mixture. The findings were used to quantify the granulation process based on the -1 mm particle size fraction in the granulated mix and their utilisation (denoted by UI-1 mm). For achieving optimal permeability in a specific blend, it was found that a UI-1 mm (utility index of -1 mm particle size) ranging from 0.82 to 0.92 was required. However, exceeding a UI-1 mm value of 0.95 resulted in weaker granules prone to deformation and led to decreased bed permeability. The study also showed that the UI-1 mm was highly dependent on the water addition per kg of -1 mm in dry feed and suggested adding ~80 to 110 mL of water per kg of -1 mm in dry feed to attain the best possible permeability. Additionally, the research proposed a mechanism involving the melting of granules at high temperatures and highlighted the influence of -1 mm particles on bed permeability during the sintering process.

Flotation is the one of the most used techniques for the mineral separation of non-ferrous ores worldwide. However, the increase of the complexness along with the decrease of ores liberation sizes ought to become important challenges for mineral processing, including flotation. It now appears necessary to better understand the fundamentals of the flotation process, particularly the adsorption of flotation reagents at the liquid/mineral interfaces, to propose further improvements. Flotation relies on different phenomena: surfactants adsorption, on one hand, and collision, adhesion, and transport of particles with bubbles, on the other hand. For acknowledging the reagents adsorption mechanisms, molecular modelling tools borrowed from chemical and material sciences, are increasingly used. Atomistic simulations were successfully applied to study the flotation reagents interaction with various mineral surfaces, eg of two common minerals from iron ores, kaolinite, and magnetite surfaces, or with fluorite surface, a tungsten ores common gangue mineral.

At September 2001 the beneficiation plant at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback mine is set to treat 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore, 40 per cent better than original design. This paper describes the steps, decision-making processes and innovations used to increase capacity at minimum cost. The plant was designed in 1979 to operate at 1133 t/h for 6000 hours per annum, treating 6.8 Mtpa. Sufficient suitable contact ore was unavailable and feed was finer than planned. The plant was designed with minimum surge capacity between multiple process units. It had never reached design capacity. In 1993 a study by Fluor Daniel to treat increased tonnage resulted in modifications to improve plant operations. Efforts to expand production by increasing reliability did not achieve the desired capacity. NJ Morrow (Pty) Ltd (NJM) conducted a technical audit in 1996 with process evaluation by Mineral Processors. Replacement of operator interface and PLC logic in 1997 made plant operation and diagnosis easier. Involving operators in logic development enhanced their plant knowledge. Fluor Daniel Simulation developed a simulation model of the process. Mineral Processors and NJM reviewed the model findings, recommended metallurgical improvements and developed preliminary designs and costs. BHP Engineering produced a detailed design with a cost estimate of $A34 million. After analysis and revision of the design, a $A10.4 million upgrade to 8.5 Mtpa was carried out. Detailed modifications to the process units, particularly the HM drum plant, allowed significantly higher capacities and improved metallurgical performance. The target capacity was achieved in June 2001. Further modifications are progressing to treat lower-grade ores.

The Charters Towers goldfield is located in the centre of a Lower to Mid-Palaeozoic igneous complex where schistose, amphibolite-grade metamorphic rocks were intruded by multiple phases of medium grained granodioritic rocks. Several generations of mafic and felsic dykes also occur. Two distinct mylonites cut all but the youngest granitoids. Gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins located in brittley reactivated mylonite and in sympathetic fissures in the undeformed granitoids. The gold-quartz veins occur in complex, gouge-filled, 2.5m thick zones, with minor sulfides, surrounded by zoned phyllic and propylitic alteration assemblages. Four main vein systems are each restricted to separate granitoids or contain oreshoots near granitoid contacts. No genetic relationship between the granitoids and the vein systems can be documented. The early mylonitic fabrics and the granitoid contacts played an important role in ground preparation and in the localization of oreshoots. Non mylonitized granitoids also served as favourable hosts for many of the lodes. Whole rock values of 180 of the granitoids range between 6.5 and 7.9 per mil. Hydrothermal vein quartzes have 180 values between 12.2 and 15.7 per mil. Mylonite quartzes have values of 8.4 per mil. Variation in 180 values of quartzes is in part related to granitoid host rock type.

The possibility of using an acidic autogenous hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) slag as a basis for vanadium extraction is investigated. For a raw material to be suitable for producing high-quality FeV, the vanadium oxide content should be sufficiently high and the phosphorus oxide content in a tolerable range. Therefore, the feasibility for vanadium extraction relies on fulfilling two demands: the predominate partitioning of phosphorus to the metal and vanadium to the slag. Correspondingly, the behaviours of phosphorus and vanadium in the Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-VyOz-P2O5-Fe system were studied experimentally. Slag, 10 g, was put in contact with liquid iron, 30 g, for different durations (2–24 hrs) in closed alumina crucibles at 1873 K. The slag composition was varied between 33.1– 49.3 wt per cent Al2O3, 27.1–46.7 wt per cent SiO2, 16.6–30.1 wt per cent FeOx, and 2.5– 8.8 wt per cent V2O3. The equilibrium phosphorus distribution was 0.42, while the vanadium distribution ranged from 7.6 to 43.4, increasing with the Al2O3- and the FeOx-content.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Halasu porphyry copper belt, located in the East Junggar basin bounded by Chinese Altay to the north and the Tianshan mountains to the south in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is one of the major porphyry copper belts in Xinjiang province, north-west China. Combined with previous studies in this area, the magmatism can be divided into three periods: pre-mineralisation activity of 390 Ma syn-mineralisation activity of 380–370 Ma post-mineralisation activity of 360–330 Ma.Through the comparison of zircon chemistry from ore-bearing and barren syn-mineralisation intrusions, negative correlation was identified between Ti-in-zircon temperatures and oxygen fugacity, corresponding to the fact that late-stage syn-mineralisation granitoids contain high water content, high oxygen fugacity and low temperatures with higher mineralisation potential. In addition, the relative low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios, high eHf(t) and eNd(t) values and mantle Pb isotope characteristics in this study support that the magma forming these intrusions was probably derived from juvenile crust generated during subduction-accretionary processes.CITATION:Wu, C and Chen, H, 2015. The Porgera gold mine has made significant progress with the successful installation of a JK FrothCam image analysis system. The system is used to measure and control froth velocity on the scavenger circuit which has brought significant economical and operational benefits. The froth velocity signal, determined by analysis of the camera, is transmitted to the PLC that manipulates flotation cell airflow rate and cell level controllers to maintain a target froth velocity of 130 mm per second. Following on from a three-week trial installation in June 2000, a permanent installation was commissioned on the scavenger Outokumpu (OK150) tank cells. Further work is in progress on the rougher Wemco cells. This paper describes the evaluation of FrothCam Technology and its subsequent installation.

Lateritic nickel ore occurs as a supergene or residual deposit as a result of the tropical weathering of underlying ultramafic rocks. The mineralisation may be as hydrated Ni-Mg silicates, like garnierite (silicate ore); or as hydrated Ni-Fe oxide (oxide) ore. Non-sulphide ore represents only 30% of the tonnage mined, but represents 85% of the total world's nickel reserves. A typical lateritic profile consists of 4 zones above the unweathered ultramafic parent rock: Zone 1: the "upper laterite" which is dark red-brown, porous and concentrically structured. It contains 0.2 to 0.8% Ni, 48.0 to 72.0% Fe, and 0 to 9.5% MgO. It is often capped by a ferricrete crust. Zone 2: the "middle laterite", which is red-brown to light brown and more porous than the above zone. It contains 0.8 to 1.5% Ni, 42.0 to 48.0% Fe and 0.5 to 6.0% MgO. Distillation of the large and growing greenhouse literature indicates that: ò Global warming has occurred over the past century or more; ò Build-up of CO2 (and lesser greenhouse gases) in the atmosphere is a fact; ò This build-up is likely to cause further global warming. It does not appear possible to conclude that the observed C02 build up and observed global warming are linked; nor is it yet possible to forecast global or regional climate variation with conviction. The dominant greenhouse gas is C02 with about half the warming potential of those gases emitted by man's activities; and about 80% of anthropogenic C02 emissions are from the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil-fuel C02 emissions arg divided about equally between the developed countries of OECD and the rest of the world. However C02 output growth over the past decade was about 4% for OECD and some 40% elsewhere. Population growth and pressure for better living standards will ensure continued higher growth outside OECD. Uncertainty about the impact of increasing C02 emissions on climate, and the long lead-times involved in limiting the increase in atmospheric C02 concentrations, are good reasons for taking action now. Australia accounts for about 275 million tonnes a year or just over 1% of the CO2 emitted from the world's consumption of fossil fuels, and the fight to control global emissions will be won or lost elsewhere. Australia's participation will be by wise conselt and by example. In view of the uncertainties involved, it appears premature to take actions that might place an additional financial burden on our hard-pressed country. However, much can be done now that makes good economic sense and has the added benefit of limiting the growth in Australia's CO2 emissions. Natural gas emits less C02 per unit of energy when burned than either coal or oil. Furthermore, new gas-fired power stations utilise energy at considerably higher efficiency than is the case today with coal or oil. Because of much lower capital costs, there is a compelling economic case for permitting natural gas to compete freely with coal in the Australian power generation market.

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

In most network connected technical installations and machines however, network security is not taken into account to a significant extent: insecure protocols are run, unencrypted information is exchanged freely and even broadcasted wirelessly and networked machines are accessible via insecure file transfer protocol (FTP).What happens in case of malfunctions of such technical installations? Who is responsible? Who can be held liable in case of accidents? The first computer worm for automation systems (æSTUXNETÆ) (Symantec, 2010) was discovered during 2010.The paper is intended to create sensitivity among decision makers for potential security and resulting safety leaks and points out the current status quo in technical network security. It outlines best practices for secure networking and procedures for remote access and remote software updates on stationary equipment and mobile mining machinery. It describes how to ensure authentic and genuine configurations and software targets and how to ensure secure communication for autonomous and remote controlled equipment. For such equipment in particular, the following statement should apply: æThere is no safety without network securityÆ.

The Operation of the LAROX PF-50 Pressure Filter at &apos;Ellatzite-Med&apos; Flotation Plant, Bulgaria The implementation of Larox pressure belt filter, type Larox PF-50 provided within 6˜8% moisture content of the produced copper concentrate, which allowed good market realisation. The start-up of the pressure filter in 2009 reduced the electricity costs several times and had a positive impact on the technological regime of flotation. This article reveals the investigation results from the operation of the pressure filter according to different situations (density of the pulp, time for filtration, pressure of the material, pressure of the drying air, time for drying with air and other factors). The investment made in the pressure filter application is a guarantee for the successful operation of &apos;Ellatzite&apos; flotation plant, Bulgaria in the coming years.

Silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is a bonding phase in the iron ore sinter. The phase transition upon melting of SFCA was investigated with Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. The initial melting of SFCA occurred at 1183.2°C and a massive melting was found at around 1351.1–1358.2°C. A phase transition-melting was investigated at 1476.5–1478.7°C. The liquid phase was composed of immiscible phases. The present results would be utilised to design a new iron ore sinter for better processing performance in a hydrogenenriched ironmaking process.

During the 110 years since the discovery of the Broken Hill PbZnAg deposit six major mining companies have mined the ore body and explored the ore environment. Despite this activity, no new orebodies have been found at Broken Hill. The failure to discover large new resources cannot be attributed to a lack of activity because major companies have maintained substantial exploration commitments over many decades. This suggests that not only was a unique coincidence of conditions required to form the deposit but also that full recognition and definition of the critical parameters may not yet have been recognised. In an attempt to illuminate some of the more unusual and poorly studied characteristics of the ore environment some new areas of investigation are presented here which may contribute to understanding the ore deposit setting and focus exploration towards different and perhaps more productive targets. Sedimentological characteristics of the host succession of the Broken Hill deposit are apparently unique along the line of lode. An upward-coarsening megasequence reflected in the development of clastic psammites stratigraphically below the ore deposit is one important ingredient which has received little exploration focus. These psammites also host mineralisation and form part of a spectrum of quart-zrich rocks collectively referred to as gametiferous psammites, garnet quartzites and blue quartz lodes. Sedimentological data interpreted from outcrop, drill core and downhole geophysical well logs support a elastic origin for some of these rocks; an interpretation which is at variance with traditional interpretations favouring an exhalative origin. A clastic origin for many of the footwall psammites, and their close spatial association with the orebodies suggests their role in ore formation was important. It is interpreted as a critical part of the fluid flow architecture within the sedimentary basin, which focussed ore forming fluids into an unique environment favourable for trapping mineralisation. Detailed stratigraphic correlation near the deposit has also highlighted that quartzofeldspathic rocks (Potosi gneisses and lode pegmatites) have complex relationships with ore. Suites of stratabound quartzofeldspathic pegmatites have received limited study, but their distribution and voluminous development suggests they may be as important to ore formation as the psammitic lode rocks which host the orebodies. These associations are not in conflict with some recent ore forming models invoking deposition in a shallow water environments of deposition. The geochemistry of parts of the host sequence has been studied extensively in the past but this has not been merged with current stratigraphic subdivisions. A large drillhole data base now permits the geochemistry to be related to the sedimentary succession and reveals that a signature involving stratigraphic vectors best illustrated by changes in MnO, Na2O, Pb and Zn can be detected. This is interpreted to reflect sedimentary basin processes as opposed to a classical volcanic hydrothermal alteration pipe associated with seafloor venting. The stratigraphic setting together with characteristics of some of these poorly understood areas is discussed to emphasise that construction of sound models for exploration requires the total ore environment to be studied with attention directed to the geometry and setting of the full range of host rocks. Control of the greater portion of the line of lode by a single company, Pasminco Australia Limited, now permits disparate datasets and observations to be merged and presents new opportunities and encouragement for model refinement and exploration success.

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson &amp; Boutilier, 2011; Lacey &amp; Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley &amp; Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat &amp; Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. This paper presents an analysis on the dynamic adsorption of frothers and collectors onto air bubbles in flotation. The analysis was carried out using the theory on the surfactant transfer by diffusion and adsorption. The bubble size was considered when solving the diffusion equation for the dynamic surface excess. The adsorption kinetics was modelled employing the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and its extension with the inclusion of the lateral interaction of the adsorbed molecules (the Frumkin adsorption isotherm). The numerical computation was applied to solve the governing equations. The dynamic adsorption of the surfactants was measured in terms of the dynamic surface tension for sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and Dowfroth 250, using pendant bubble tensiometry. The results show that for air bubbles with diameter of the order of 1 mm, the bubble size effect on the dynamic surface tension is small and the solution of the diffusion equation for a planar gas-liquid surface can be used to describe the dynamic adsorption onto the air bubbles. The experimental data obtained with SDBS were well described by the Frumkin adsorption isotherm and the molecular diffusion. The model description for the experimental data obtained with Dowfroth 250 required the kinetic equations. The paper is relevant for further analysis of the role of the adsorbed surfactants in the particle collection.
