I once read an æarticleÆ in FHM Magazine entitled æThe Coolest Jobs There Ever WasÆ. It was about a group of guys who were pursuing careers that any person on the planet would just kill for. I distinctly remember drooling over the pages, thinking how much I would love to be Michael SchumacherÆs Chief Engineer at Ferrari, or the Principal Designer and Tester for one of the big Dutch rollercoaster companies. From that moment on, I decided that I wanted a career that was cool enough to make it into the pages of that article. Throughout my time at university, I always had that article in the back of my mind. As a result I constantly wondered about what sort of job I could end up with once I left university. More importantly, I wondered if FHM would be banging down my door to put me in the magazine! After a long and stressful job hunting process (in between completing a thesis and studying for exams) I finally managed to land myself a job with Orica Mining Services. I can honestly say I didnÆt know what to expect when I first joined Orica. Most of my friends ended up working for big mining companies, while I was offered a position with one of the biggest suppliers to these mining companies. However, I had a feeling when I was discussing the role with my future supervisor during the interview process that the job was going to be awesome. I have now spent a year working for Orica and I absolutely love it! While I feel that my job is worthy of being in that FHM article, unfortunately, I donÆt think I am going to get my opportunity to be in the magazine. Apparently I donÆt look too good in a bikini! However, I would love to have the opportunity to discuss the journey that I have taken so far û from my time as an environmental science graduate, then moving on to mining engineering, to now, being part of the Orica Mining Services Graduate Program. My suggestion is to use this paper as a resource. I have learnt during my time at university, as well as my time in the workforce, that the best people you can learn from are your peers. Take what you feel is relevant from the paper; hopefully it will help guide you in shaping your own career.

"Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. As Pliny commented two millennia ago, The only certainty is that nothing is certain. Despite the many breakthroughs, advances and promises, the way we each live and work remains awash with technological, economic and political uncertainty. The resources sector is no exception in this regard. Mining itself is much more than a complicated process or recipe; it is a complex adaptive system. The way we adopt and adapt new technologies, the way we evolve data into corporate wisdom, the way we make decisions and even the way we view our concept of rationality should each be the subject of intense review. Translating these sentiments into sustainable company growth is indeed the challenge. This is unlikely to be achieved within convention, but through innovation. The game is changing!

The Australian Coal Combustion Testing and Research Facility has been operating commercially for one year and during that period coal product evaluations have been conducted on behalf of four coal companies and one electricity commission. The facility is equipped to assess the behaviour of steaming coal in milling, combustion (including flame stability, burnout and heat transfer), ash deposition and erosion, fly ash collection and gaseous emissions. The relevance of the results of the pilot testing to industrial practice was demonstrated during the calibration of the facility using four coals burnt in Australian power stations. The calibration coals were from the Tarong and Gladstone Power Stations in Queensland, tluja Power Station in Western Australia and Bayswater Power Station in New South Wales. Also an opportunity arose to visit an overseas power station to observe a full scale test burn using one of the early coals tested on a commercial basis in the combustion test facility. The calibration trials showed excellent agreement with industrial coal performance in t:orms of flame stability, turndown, carbon burnout and gaseous emissions. Encouraging correlations were also found in the case of furnace radiation, boiler deposits (slagging and fouling) and electrostatic precipitation. In the case of the last group the only real reservations about the correlations are due to the non-availability or qualitative nature of results collected around the power stations. In all cases there is a high degree of confidence in the facility's ability to predict the relative performance of different coals and in some cases direct numerical predictions can be Made.

Small orogenic gold deposits have the same deposit-scale geological and geochemical features as those that characterise giant orogenic gold systems (>16 Moz Au). Therefore, a broader-scale approach is needed to identify the critical controls on giant deposits and their disproportionate distribution throughout time and space. Ages of giant gold systems cluster around well-defined periods of lithospheric growth at continental margins, and it is orogen-scale processes during these Late Archaean, Early Proterozoic and Phanerozoic times that determine gold endowment of a province.   A critical factor for giant orogenic gold provinces appears to be asthenospheric upwelling at the time of gold mineralisation to most effectively transfer the thermal energy required to initiate and sustain high hydrothermal fluid flux. The extent of this fluid flux should be related to thickness of the lithosphere beneath a province at the time of gold mineralisation, such that giant gold deposits are much more likely to develop in orogens with oceanic or thinned continental lithosphere. A proxy for the latter is likely to be a short premineralisation crustal history such that thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle was not developed. Conversely, orogens with protracted premineralisation crustal histories are more likely to have a thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle, which is difficult to delaminate and, hence, such provinces will normally be poorly endowed. The nature of the lithosphere also influences the intrinsic gold concentrations of potential source rocks, with back-arc basalts, transitional basalts and basanites enriched in gold relative to other rock sequences. Thus, segments of orogens with thin lithosphere may be defined by conjunction of giant-scale fluid flux through gold-enriched sequences.   Although the nature of the lithosphere plays the crucial role in dictating which orogenic gold provinces will contain one or more giant deposits, the precise siting of those giants depends on the critical conjunction of a number of province-scale factors that control fluid conduits, traps, and seals in tectonically and lithospherically suitable terranes within accretionary orogens.

The development and distribution of gold placers in Otago û Southland is related primarily to the evolution and architecture of three distinctly different drainage networks that developed during and since Gondwana breakup: +        Late-Gondwana û Pre-marine; +        Middle Tertiary Post-marine; and +        Modern. Late Gondwana û Pre-marine drainage was dominantly recti-linear and controlled by normal faults and sedimentary basins formed before or during Gondwana breakup. Placers formed dominantly in 2nd order transverse drainages with primary sources in their catchments. This drainage network was progressively destroyed by inundation and burial by marine strata during Late Cretaceous û Middle Tertiary marine transgression that ultimately covered most of New Zealand. Middle Tertiary Post-marine drainage evolved on and incised the newly emergent low-relief landscape during regional marine regression driven by development of the present plate boundary through South Island. Most of Central Otago was drained into Southland and to the southern coast via a large braided river system with an extensive network of tributaries in its Central Otago reach. East Otago was drained by several smaller systems. Placers formed dominantly in proximal and medial reaches of 1st and 2nd order drainages with primary or pre-existing placers in their catchments. This drainage network was destroyed by inundation and burial of the Central Otago reach of the major system by lacustrine strata following tectonic damning of its middle reach by range uplift and development of a lake complex that covered >5000km2 of Central Otago. The Modern drainage network evolved from the Middle Tertiary network through complex response, firstly to uplift of NW-trending and NE-trending ranges throughout the region since the Late Miocene, and secondly to the effects of major Pleistocene glacial advances in West Otago. Placers formed in alluvial fans at range margins, proximal and medial pre-glacial fluvial systems and glacial outwash sequences. Evolution of each of these drainage networks has been accompanied by widespread sedimentary recycling of alluvial gold from older to younger placers, augmented locally by input of first-cycle gold derived from erosion of primary sources in the repeatedly exhumed basement rocks.

"The high rate of failure of new mine developments to meet feasibility study expectations has been the subject of many fine technical papers. Yet failure rates remain stubbornly high.Similarly, the common occurrence of disastrous acquisitions resulting from failed due diligence on projects is well known. Yet such mistakes continue to be made.The authors argue that project and due diligence failure are caused at least partly by cognitive biases. These biases pervade decision-making throughout project evaluations.A wider understanding of these biases (and their effects) is necessary. Only then can mitigating actions be taken.The opportunity for this wider understanding exists. A number of best-selling books have been published on the topic in recent years. With wider understanding of key concepts and terms, cognitive biases can be recognised and discussed. They can also be challenged and mitigated.The authors believe that these concepts should be entry-level, required knowledge for anyone evaluating, developing, reviewing or financing mining projects.Perhaps the most prevalent biases in project evaluation failure are the ‘over-optimism’ biases. In particular, the planning fallacy and confirmation bias.The anchoring effect is also pervasive. This bias propagates unrealistic assumptions from scoping and prefeasibility studies through to so-called definitive feasibility studies. Unrecognised anchoring biases also undermine the validity of many ‘independent’ due diligence reviews. They are also prevalent in corporate acquisitions.The availability heuristic refers to a mental shortcut that can lead to a number of biases. One of these is the narrative fallacy. The mind constructs coherent narratives and opinions, regardless of the amount and quality of the information that support them. Narrative fallacy commonly occurs in the evaluation of social and political risk. Another is disaster neglect, which is especially common in the failure to assess risks associated with tailings management.This paper outlines the relevance of these biases to mine project evaluations. The Middle and Lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt is one of the most important polymetallic resource areas in China. Iron oxide-apatite deposits, mainly distributed in Ningwu and Luzong volcanic basins, are a distinct type of iron deposits in this region. These deposits have a close temporal and spatial relationship with Mesozoic dioritic porphyries and are characterised by magnetite-apatite-pyroxene/actinolite ± anhydrite assemblage and large-scale sodic-calcic alteration.Widespread multiphase inclusions in pre- to main-mineralisation stage pyroxene and garnet in Meishan (in the Ningwu basin), Luohe and Nihe (both in the Luzong basin) iron deposits were trapped at ~780°C in extremely saline brines (~90 wt per cent NaCl equivalent), consisting of Na (13–24 wt per cent), K (7–11 wt per cent), Ca (~7 wt per cent), Fe (~2 wt per cent), Cl (19–47 wt per cent) and SO4 (3–39 wt per cent), based on petrologic, microthermometric, Raman spectroscopic studies and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of natural fluid inclusions and synthetic analogues. The high Cl/Br, Na/B and S/B ratios in brine inclusions and the heavy sulfur isotopic values of anhydrite and pyrite (d34SAnh = +15.2 to +16.9‰, d34SPy = +4.6 to +12.1‰) suggest a significant contribution from both halite- and anhydrite-bearing sedimentary rocks. The involvement of evaporites caused the production of large amounts of high-salinity brines with apparently enhanced capacity to extract iron from the dioritic intrusions.According to their geologic features and the above characteristics, these iron oxide-apatite deposits are considered to be a special type of iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits characterised by high contents of Na, Ca, Cl and SO4 in the ore-forming fluids. For the past 3 years Waihi as a community has been actively engaged in consultation about its future with regard to the environmental, cultural, economic and social viability. This has been made possible through the implementation of the Waihi Community Vision (WCV) process which bought together a diverse range of people and interests.   Through their collaboration and collective energies, they produced a montage of possibilities for the future of Waihi, known as the 2020 Vision. A proceeding evaluation process was adopted by the group to enable the myriad of projects to be assessed and prioritised in terms of the communityÆs social, economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual values.   From this came the desire to be involved in the implementation of these ideas and create an organisation that could facilitate the successful manifestation of the 2020 Vision and other suitable projects.   The Vision Waihi Trust (VWT) was formed in February 2006 and is intended to be a tool through which the community can address issues about its future sustainability. They will work collaboratively with community groups, Hauraki District Council and Newmont Waihi Gold to develop and implement innovative and practical solutions. It should be acknowledged that such outcomes are subject to influence by both external and internal factors and it is important to consider this when looking at sustainability issues.   Waihi is now at a very interesting stage of its development and has the opportunity to proactively design and implement plans to determine its future rather than just let things evolve. A town with a strong sense of its roots and with a strong community identity may be a more attractive as a place live and work. There are additional business opportunities which may also be stimulated by a community that takes charge of its own destiny.   The process that has been worked through over the past three years gives a solid foundation on which to build and must be viewed as positive community development. Waihi certainly has a unique proposition to take to the marketplace, based on its rich gold mining heritage and current modern day mining operations. This requires investigation, refinement and implementation and Vision Waihi Trust looks forward to building to a vibrant and prosperous Waihi in the years to come.

The first record of coal discovery in Australia dates back to 1791 when escaping convicts found coal in the banks of a creek just south of Newcastle. Development in the Newcastle Coalfield was the sole source of supply for the colony and for export until the 1850s when mines were established in the Southern & Western Coalfields. The important Hunter Coalfield was not discovered until 1873 when coal was found at Rixs Creek near Singleton: The first exploration drillholes were commenced in 1799 using drilling equipment obtained by Sir Joseph Banks. From 1820 to 1850 several famous geologists (naturalists), including the Rev W. B. Clarke, J. D. Dana and Strzelecki, wrote reports on the coal measures in New South Wales. The first Government Geo- logist, Samuel Stutchbury, was appointed in 1850. The major coal deposits of the State are contained in Permian Coal Measures in the Sydney-Gunnedah and Oaklands Basins. Coal quality ranges from high volatile, high moisture thermal coal at Oaklands to low volatile hard coking coal in the Southern Coalfield. Most coalfields can provide a range of steaming and coking coals.

Controlling unwanted ground movement is critical in mining as well as many other highly hazardous environments, such as construction and tunnelling. Sharing knowledge about effective hazard management is paramount to improving health and safety and operational outcomes across industries, and some industry sectors have embraced this openness as part of the way that they do business. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program funded the RISKGATE project to build a body of knowledge for managing a broad range of hazards across mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure within a mine-life or product life cycle perspective (eg from exploration through to decommissioning, or design through to operation). The RISKGATE body of knowledge was assembled from Australian coal industry experts through a semi-structured bowtie analysis-based action research workshop cycle. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE serves to provide a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper presents an overview of RISKGATE topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, ground control open cut, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, tailings dams and inrush) with a summary of individual topic structures, as well as showing the contrasts and inter-relationships between these ground management topics. Yuanjing processing plant is a scheelite and wolframite plant in southern China. Water shortages and recent environmental regulations mean that the plant must reuse the wastewater that comes from the mining operation. This paper describes the efforts to reuse the mining and ore washing wastewater (MOW) in the processing plant. Initial attempts to reuse the MOW in the strong magnetic separation were unsuccessful because the magnetic media pack was seriously fouled by the micro-fine precipitate generated. The focus changed to reuse the MOW in the scheelite flotation circuit, which includes one roughing, one cleaning and three scavenging steps. Laboratory batch tests showed this would likely be successful because using MOW reliably improved the flotation performance in the laboratory tests. Then a 20 day industrial trial was run in the plant. The trial was very successful with the enrichment ratio of WO3 increasing from 17.4 to 23.6, while the recovery remained around 79.2 per cent. The industrial trial was so successful the company immediately adopted the new scheme, which has remained in use ever since. This technical solution not only alleviated serious water shortages, and satisfied environmental regulations but also improved the plant performance.

This paper summarises the lessons learned during a recent carbon reactivation kiln upgrade project at the Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt. The kiln is being replaced to ensure that the plant achieves full value from the current throughput expansion from 5 to 10 Mt/a.The suitability of the original engineering design criteria for kiln selection and the adequacy of the original kiln are reviewed in the light of the carbon chemistry, operating experience and a site inspection of the kiln. Particular aspects of the reactivation facility are discussed including: predrying, preheating, feeding, gas seals, kiln heat transfer, steam injection, counter-current sweep gas flow, carbon cooling, fines minimisation and removal.Design criteria for a carbon predryer, reactivation kiln and cooler combination for carbon heavily fouled by high molecular weight frothers and collectors are discussed and the abridged Ausenco datasheet for the combination is presented.Responses to a request for a budget price sent to most of the worldÆs suppliers of carbon regeneration kilns are summarised.CITATION:Claflin, J K, La Brooy, S R J and Preedy, D, 2013. The Kwademen Au deposit was discovered in 1977- 1978 following a regional geochemical survey carried out as part of a UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and BUMIGEB (Bureau des Mines et de la Geologie du Burkina) mineral exploration programme. The climate in Burkina Faso is rather dry, with markedly seasonal rainfall averaging 800 mm pa in the Kwademen project area. The relief is low and the drainage poorly developed, so that soil sampling was preferred to stream sediment sampling. Rocks have been subjected to deep lateritic weathering, so that they are transformed into a mixture of Fe-oxides and kaolinite over depths varying between 30 and 40 m. At the regional stage, soil samples (30-40 cm depth) were collected a a 300 x 500 m grid. The Kwademen deposit was indicated by Cu, Zn, Mo and Au anomalies. Subsequently, an area of 9.2 km2 was covered by a detailed geochemical survey by soil (100 x 50 m) and auger sampling. The regional anomaly was fully confirmed, and subsequent drilling intersected mineralized ore shoots, justifying the establishment of an evaluation project led by the U.N.R.F. (United Nations Revolving Fund) in 1983- 1985.

For most practical rock engineering purposes, stress versus strength conditions around underground openings for which rock masses fail and their various modes of failure, are reasonably well-understood and predictable. Some rock masses and particular rock types fail slowly and relatively quietly. However, others can fail rapidly, violently and maybe with the ejection of significant broken rock. In some countries and in some mines, the latter style of violent fracturing and failure of the rock mass is referred to as ‘strain bursting’. It can be alarming and extremely hazardous to nearby miners and machines. For such situations, the design and installation of appropriate ground support, to provide a safe work place, can be challenging. At any particular mine site, it’s often generally understood which local rock masses (rock types) are prone to strain bursting. Competent and strong siliceous rocks and some massive sulphides are often the main offenders. While some neighbouring, equally-competent and strong rocks might also fail, they do so more quietly and without ejection. To understand this contrast, a better understanding of the fracturing process is required other than simple and standard strength versus stress considerations. Suites of standard intact rock properties from numerous Australian mines have been used to define and help understand different high-stress failure styles for component intact rock; especially those prone to violent fracturing (strain bursting). Simple considerations of micro-fracturing (defects in the intact material), plus the available energy at failure versus the energy consumed during fracturing, distinguishes between over-stressed and competent rock types that fracture violently and those that don’t. This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. Within the past decade, incidents of mining–community conflicts have grown dramatically and represent one aspect of a phenomenon known as social risk. Research published in 2014 indicates that a lack of social acceptance is now a leading and costly cause of delays for mining projects.The rise of social risk, complemented by the need to earn the trust of an increasing number of stakeholders so that mining projects can be developed effectively, is problematic for the industry. Conflicts are occurring in situations where companies are fully compliant with regulatory and legal requirements, despite initiatives by mining companies to earn social acceptance and despite the proliferation of tools to support corporate social responsibility. Intensifying the impact of social risk is the fact that it has increased during a time in the global mining sector when companies have had to grapple with declining commodity prices, increasing capital costs and debt levels and the challenges of mining lower-grade deposits.This paper will explore a hypothesis that in today’s interconnected society, social risk in the mining sector constitutes a legitimate business risk that must be managed strategically. The reality facing mining companies is that information, once considered confidential, now travels quickly on social networks and via a growing number of groups and individuals that have earned a legitimate right to be classified as stakeholders in projects that affect their communities. To be successful, it is suggested that companies will benefit from increasing internal collaboration and providing training to equip teams to mitigate social risk to mining projects and protect reputation capital. Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is the primary global source of titaniumdioxide which is commonly used as a whitening agent in papermanufacture and a pigment in paint manufacture. In WesternAustralia ilmenite is processed by the Becher process (Becher,1963, Becher et al, 1965) where ilmenite particles are feddirectly into the furnace with coal and heated to form acomposite of elemental iron and TiO2. The mechanism of thecarbothermic reduction of ilmenite has been extensively studied(Grey, Jones and Reid, 1973; Jones, 1973; Grey and Reid, 1974;El-Tawil, Morse and Francis, 1993) and is reasonably wellaccepted.

Opportunities to improve mill operations are often cited by mining companies and recognised in many concentrators spread throughout the world but are not always followed through. Copper-molybdenum concentrator operations are challenged by a continuously increasing list of detrimental factors. They include deteriorating ore characteristics and poor mineralogical information on deeper ores, water quality and availability, steel wear and increasing power costs. Rapidly declining productivity, sustainability and environmental factors, new taxes, mining industry global skill set shortages, to name but a few, must also be considered. The days of maximising value by just increasing production or simple cost cutting are fading and will not be sufficient for the future of more complex mineral processing operations and larger plants. As a result, FLSmidth’s Global Process Technology Group has launched a plant and process optimisation program based on mineralogical and metallurgical surveys.Copper-molybdenum concentrators of the future need a paradigm shift. Modelling and simulation tools alone are not the answer to complex mineralogical associations and larger scale equipment and operations. Detailed area by area review aimed at identifying process constraints in terms of equipment and operating practice in conjunction with robust diagnostic work, ie mineralogical and metallurgical characterisation, are mandatory for process optimisation. The navigational beacon, for all operations who want to remain competitive, will be ‘process efficiency’. Since the use of automated mineral analysers has become more readily available and reliable, mineralogical-metallurgical plant surveys have proven themselves as the most efficient tool for optimising plant performance.The following paper will illustrate how operations can move toward eliminating under-performing flow sheets, fixing run-away flotation conditions, maximising individual process equipment performance, preventing shortcuts in Bond work index testing which may cause the failure of comminution models and minimising costly and time-consuming ‘debottlenecking’. As previous plant surveys have shown, the net project cash flow can be increased by 50 to 200 per cent if a combination of robust ore characterisation and plant process mineralogy is performed. The combined plant survey approach has been demonstrated successfully in a multitude of operations. "The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. Golder AssociatesÆ experience with the recertification process highlights some common deficiencies with Code compliance programs, such as: system breakdowns (leading to ineffective communication between departments or loss of information) exceedance of discharge limits inadequate inspections, maintenance activities and associated record-keeping.Such deficiencies can be attributed to: personnel changes organisational changes or structures management systems (eg integrated or standalone) awareness and interpretation of Code requirements transparency of management decisions with Code implications.We have identified that ongoing programed assessment is an effective strategy in maintaining Code compliance.CITATION:Beazley, R J and Woods, M C, 2013.
