The extremely lengthy and complicated governmental approval process together with the delaying tactics of opponents of the project are outlined and comment is made on aspects of the draft legislation proposed as part of the overhaul of New Zealand's resource management laws.

At Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system, TVZ, mineral distribution patterns in geothermal wells are analogous to those in epithermal veins. Fluid flow through geothermal wells is focused over vertical intervals >500 m with discharge at rates up to 90 l/s. Focused flow at similar rates also occurs in natural systems where hydrothermal eruption vents provide enhanced vertical permeability. These vents are commonly aligned with the tectonic fabric, indicating fault control at depth. We suggest that host rock strength and structural context exert significant control on the hydrological regime conducive to epithermal mineralisation.

Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

Gold-silver mineralised veins at Favona, represent a new low-sulfidation epithermal vein discovery that occurs less than 1 km southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The Favona vein is hosted in Late Miocene andesitic lava flows and local dacitic tuffs that are intensely altered to quartz, adularia, chlorite, illite or interstratified illite-smectite (with ten to 70 per cent smectite) and pyrite. Adularia is widespread and envelops the veins, whereas chlorite and illite are mostly restricted to the footwall, and illite-smectite is confined to the hanging wall of the Favona vein. At shallow levels, kaolinite, cristobalite and rare alunite overprint the above minerals. A polymict hydrothermal breccia also occurs above and in the hanging wall of the Favona vein and contains clasts of altered andesite and various quartz vein fragments. Fluid inclusions in quartz veins sampled over a 300 m vertical interval have a homogenisation temperature range of 175¦ to 266¦C and dilute apparent salinities of 220¦C and grading into illite-smectite and local smectite which formed at 2. In contrast, late kaolinite, cristobalite and alunite formed from descending steam-heated acid-sulfate waters. Overall, the Favona and Waihi deposits are interpreted to have formed at similar levels in a single low relief hydrothermal system, with each deposit representing a distinct zone of fluid upflow.

Mining at Waihi on the Martha Hill commenced in 1878 and between 1892 and 1953 produced 35 million ounces of bullion from some 13.5 million short tons of ore from 40 named quartz reefs. The general geology of the ore is recorded in detail with differing interpretations by Bell and Fraser (1912) and Morgan (1924). The reefs and stringers have formed by fissure filling and replacement in mainly quartz andesite dacite flows within the Waihi 'Graben'. The host rocks are extensively propylitised with intense alteration forming zones of kaolin adjacent to the main reefs.

Application of the Anaconda Simplified Work Index for Multiple Test Sizes Vale uses Bond Work Index measurements extensively in a number of applications. The Bond Work Index is usually a good parameter for checking scale up procedures when sizing ball mills, as well as the basis for variability analysis whenever drill core data is available. It is typical to measure between 100 and 150 Bond Work Indexes, depending on the deposit characteristics. The Bond procedure is relatively complex and time costly. It also requires relatively large amounts of sample, which are very expensive to be obtained. The benefits of the Anaconda simplified procedure are: considerably smaller sample requirements and laboratory time. This makes it very much attractive at Vale's development centre, including geometallurgical mapping, operation efficiency control, mine to mill, etc. The Anaconda simplified procedure was implemented and evaluated at Vale's Development Centre using a number of ores and several samples of each ore totalling more than 190 measurements. The Anaconda simplified method was calibrated for several test sieves and a correlation for any test size was determined for Vale's test mill. The calibration was also extended for two sample top sizes. The relative error of the simplified procedure was found to be in the range of nine per cent which is within the expected error Bond standard procedure. The implementation of the Anaconda method at Vale's development center has been used with great success over the past years in several green field, brown field projects and operating plants.

Western Australia (WA), alongside Brazil, has remained at the forefront of the global seaborne traded iron ore market for over 40 years. Despite this apparent stability and strong market position, WA continues to face strong external international supply-side competition, mainly from Brazil, but also periodically from often marginal, non-traditional sources of iron ore. Additionally, WA iron ore supply has undergone significant decadal change internally, both of an evolutionary (brownfields expansion) and revolutionary nature (major new greenfields projects). Since 2006, a new generation of WA-focused iron ore explorers, developers and producers have emerged.The majors, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, have expanded mine production to record levels and the Roy Hill project is now approaching nameplate capacity. Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) is, however, the largest new market entrant of the last decade, delivering upon their vision of becoming the ‘new force in iron ore’. Unlike most of the other new WA market entrants, FMG’s operations are substantive. Most of the other smaller, new WA iron ore miners have struggled during the period of falling prices, though it is worth noting that collectively they have made a material supply-side impact during the price boom – typical of marginal supply. Finally there have been some contributions from new magnetite projects, however, the delivery and economics of these projects have not met expectations.In this paper, we touch briefly upon the key global market changes of the last decade, namely China-driven demand growth and the changes to the pricing mechanisms for iron ores – before reviewing the rise in WA iron ore supply in response to these markets. We finish by focusing on the most significant WA-focused supply-side development of the last decade, the rise of FMG as a major new supplier and the strategic situation that facilitated its rise. The unprecedented China-led rise in iron ore prices felled many traditional barriers to market entry into an oligopolistic industry, allowing many new market entrants (in WA and around the world). However, the downturn in iron ore prices resurrected these barriers to entry, with only FMG (thus far) breaking the entry barrier with significant scale. Difficult corporate decisions have been forced upon the smaller WA iron ore miners who, in some cases, will now struggle to further expand, or indeed continue to operate in the longer run.The changes that have taken place over the last decade of WA iron ore production hold insights for other emergent mineral commodity exports from the state. Successful market entry, even when industry barriers are high, does not always require an immediate low-cost production assumption alongside a strong balance sheet. FMG could see a new market, within an established commodity market, target an appropriate and new product at it, overcome temporarily-felled barriers to entry in infrastructure and finance, then innovate and aggressively cut costs ensuring it was behind the barriers to entry when they rose again after the price boom.CITATION:Barrere, L, Trench, A, Sykes, J P and Davies, R S, 2017. The Mining Innovation – State of Play was initiated three years ago by VCI in partnership with the University of Western Australia. The ambition was to create a ‘think tank’ type platform to support industry discussion on how it is performing in terms of innovation at a strategic level, what needs to change in the industry ‘ecosystem’, and how businesses may more effectively develop their strategy and architecture to innovate for competitive advantage.The drivers for this ambition were straightforward. The industry recognises itself as being conservative with respect to innovation and it knows the business and community endowment dividend from getting better at innovation is large; however, much of the material that seeks to provide insight on innovation tends to be drawn from industries that do not have the same high capital, long life cycle and market uncertainty characteristics as that faced by mining. Material that does focus on mining innovation is orientated towards technical innovation, not innovation strategy. There exists a significant knowledge gap, and filling it is valuable to both mining businesses and communities.The 2014 Mining Innovation State of Play report (Stanway, Griebel and Mahoney, 2014), based on a survey of over 230 mining executives, uncovered a range of insights but left several questions unresolved. The people with the best perspective on these questions are CEOs. They can see the business issues with sufficient clarity and have the influence to shape both the industry and its organisations, as seen in Figure 1. Discussing these questions with the view to progressing our collective understanding was the primary reason this interview series was conducted.Unsurprisingly, interviewing 15 CEOs and Chairpersons from different industries and commodities, across the globe resulted in a broad range of views. The discussions were frank and often blunt in assessing the short comings in the industry and suggestions for improvement. This degree of candour is hugely valuable as a basis for improvement. The rapid expansion of gold production in Australia over the last five years can be attributed in part to the development of selective mining techniques for open pit gold operations. These techniques allow an increase in head grade with a substantial reduction in mill feed tonnage, as compared with traditional open pit designs. As a result, the capital requirements for mine development and mill construction are substantially reduced, improving the cash flow profile in the early years of operations. To put such a design into effect, the emphasis of mine production must be on producing gold, rather than tonnes of ore. Mine planning at Martha Hill has been based on such a philosophy. After the quantity and grade of the resource had been defined, the exploration programme was increasingly concerned with the local variability of ore zones, and with determining the position of values within broad ore-definition envelopes. The purpose of this work has been to allow the prediction of the tonnages and grades achievable from various levels of the pit when mining selectively using hydraulic excavators. The studies have so far indicated that the Martha Hill deposit can be mined selectively during the early years of production. The additional costs for detailed grade control and a reduced digging efficiency are more than compensated by the exclusion from the mill feed of much valueless material.

Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

As part of BHP Iron Ore's policy and goal of achieving a high standard of environmental management within its operations, a protocol for mine closure has evolved. The need to demonstrate sound environmental management with respect to site decommissioning meant that a comprehensive, environmentally sensitive closure protocol was required. Within this framework, a four-phase protocol was developed, the first phase was the determination of objectives in relation to site rehabilitation and end land use. The second phase was the determination of the process required to achieve these objectives. The third phase was the application of this process in a site specific manner. The fourth and final phase was monitoring of the site with regard to the achievement of determined objectives. The protocol was originally developed to direct the closure and decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site in 1992. This being the first total site decommissioning for BHP Iron Ore. Since that time the protocol has been successfully utilised for the closure of the Yampi (Koolan Island) operations (in 1993/94) and the Shay Gap/Nimingarra Operations (in 1994/95).

The Brunswick plant is located in Costerfield, approximately 40km east of Bendigo in central Victoria. Crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration and flotation methods are used to produce a saleable gold concentrate and an antimony-gold flotation concentrate. This paper discusses the improvements made within the processing plant which have resulted in a 99% increase in throughput over nameplate capacity of 6 250 average tonnes per month to 12 445 average tonnes per month and increases of 12% gold (from 2007 average of 78% to 2014 average of 90%) and 16% antimony recovery (from 2007 average of 79% to 2015 average of 95%). Column Bioleaching of a Low-Grade Nickel-Bearing Sulfide Ore Yellow Mountain Deposit belonging to GobiMin Inc is located in the Chinese Tianshan and Altay orogenic belts, Hami, Xinjiang Province, NW China. Indicated Mineral Resources of its reserve are estimated at 12 million tonnes averaging 0.40 per cent nickel. Mineralogical examination and chemical analysis indicated that the Yellow Mountain ore is a type of high Fe, low Mg and low Ni sulfide ore: the main sulfide minerals are ~8.0 per cent pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), ~1.0 per cent pentlandite ((Fe, Ni)9S8), ~0.6 per cent chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~0.5 per cent pyrite (FeS2), and ~0.2 per cent violarite((Fe, Ni)3S4); the main gangue minerals are ~48 per cent olivine, ~28 per cent antigorite, ~3 per cent chlorite, ~2 per cent talc, ~2 per cent tremolite, and~1.5 per cent magnetite; the chemical analysis of the ore sample are Ni 0.40 per cent, Co 0.016 per cent, Cu 0.24 per cent, Fe 12.4 per cent, S 5.6 per cent, MgO 9.6 per cent, CaO 1.80 per cent, SiO2 48.5 per cent and Al2O3 10.3 per cent. Preliminary results of the shake flask test showed that pyrrhotite is easily leached and the high concentration of ferric iron would hamper the growth of bacteria which will bring a negative impact on the bioleaching conversely. This work aims to set up a method to prevent the negative impact of the ferric ion on the bioleaching of the ore. Two method were combined to prevent the negative impact of the ferric ion, they are adaptation of the mixed bacteria to iron ion and bleeding the off-solution periodically to control the levels of iron ion (depending on the tolerance of the microorganisms to the ferric ion) in the leaching solution. Using a mixed mesophiles composed of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans under room temperature, a nickel recovery of 93 per cent and a cobalt recovery of 85 per cent were achieved in 280 days column bioleaching process with an average nickel concentration in the leaching solution of 2.6 g/L. The results showed that the negative effect of the ferric ion can be successfully controlled and the nickel can be bioleached successfully from theYellow Mountain ore.

This paper illustrates the use of variography and moving average plots as an aid to analysing variations in the process that can be used to direct the improvement efforts. The hydrometallurgical processes used in manganese metal production consist of sequential unit operations that include milling and reduction of manganese ores. Leaching of the reduced ore, is followed by solid-liquid separation, residue disposal, solution purification and electrowinning of manganese metal completes the process. The nearly 250 integrated process control loops rely on reports of pH, flow pressure, level, temperature and chemical analyses. Metallurgical accounting, reconciliation and process control is achieved through monitoring of the chemical and mass balances within the manganese reduction plant, requiring approximately 50 000 analyses of solids, powders and liquids each month. The largest numbers of samples are taken in the cell house. Changes and variations monitored by sample statistics ensure that the manganese products comply with predetermined specification limits. Optimising the information-value of the approximately 50 000 samples in the manganese plant is carried out in tandem with ongoing process optimisation. Variographic analysis of daily sampling data suggests that the cyclical behaviour evident in the moving average plots is only a reflection of random residual variability and not a reflection of true underlying variability related to cyclical phenomena. Low resolution in the variogram of daily sampling data masks the short-range variability that emerges when hourly data are analysed. Hourly samples collected over a 39-day period (giving 941 sample data), helped identify short-range cycles in the process. The relative distribution of variability for daily sample intervals, indicate that 57 per cent arises from V[0], 18 per cent from V[process] and 16 per cent from random residual variation. V[0] includes all the uncontrolled sampling error arising from a poor sampling protocol, the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. This confirms the suspicions regarding the suboptimality of the sampling protocol and the way it is implemented. The absence of long-term trends in the leach suggests that short-term variation (less than one day) dominates the process. While the control charts indicate that the overall processes are maintained above the lower specification limits and the target values, there is nevertheless a considerable amount of variability in the system that overhangs the processes and threatens to impact them negatively. Although the variability in the leach is above the prescribed limits, the volatility is a matter of concern because it seems to be uncontrolled. The comparison of the various sources of variability in data collected on an hourly basis suggests that the short-term random variability (V[0]) accounts for almost 50 per cent of the variability in the process. The main source of this variability is due to errors in the sampling protocol and is probably related to the size of the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. Remediation of FE and GSE will probably lead to a reduction in V[0], whereas V[process] could be mitigated by reducing the biases associated with DE and EE in particular.

Management of information systems for data collection is essential to maintain data integrity and continuity, and manage loss control on a large world-class mine such as Telfer Gold Mine. This paper aims to describe the individual systems and protocols of geological data capture at Telfer, then focus on Quality Assurance Quality Control data as an example of loss control in practice. Loss control systems are required to provide capacity, flexibility, structure and management tools to enhance data interrogation. The data that have been collected can then provide geological, financial, environmental, and contractual information to optimise management of business best practice. Telfer Gold Mine is a wholly owned and operated subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. The mine is located in a remote area of NW Western Australia, and has been operating for 20 years. Geological data have been collected at Telfer since 1973. The data include drilling, assay, geological, survey, structural and geophysical data. Data management has evolved through many systems with data stored on many different hardware and software platforms. Commencing in 1995, collation, standardisation and validation of the historic data was completed. This has resulted in the first Access based drill hole database incorporating all available drilling data. This drill hole database, now hosted in SQL Server, is the hub for all geology related data management systems. The Telfer Gold Mine Geology Department has developed a series of inter-related database systems in order to manage the core geology business issues. Databases relating to drill hole planning, drill contract management, geological logging, accounting (standard costing, forecasting, invoice reconciliation), quality control (QAQC), and environment rehabilitation have all been developed to manage loss control. Management effort to provide adequate data systems and protocols has driven the system from concept to utilisation. The improved productivity, data integrity and data analysis capabilities provided by the new database systems at Telfer have allowed for greater confidence in decision making. Systems such as the drill hole and QAQC databases, when utilised in the proper manner provide up-to-date data analysis for resource audits and contract negotiations. The loss control systems are essential to maintain confidence in data integrity and hence directly effect the future of mining at Telfer.
