THE purpose of mine-hoist safety con-trollers is to prevent hoists from being operated at speeds above those considered safe and expedient, to ensure proper accel-eration and retardation near the ends of travel, and to prevent overwinding. In other words, they are to safeguard the normal speeds and movements of the hoist-ing drums and cages. The object of this paper is to explain the fundamental principles of hoist controllers, and to aid in their selection, installation, and maintenance. There have been many designs of me-chanical hoist controllers, the basic ele-ments of which as ultimately developed consisted of a flyball governor and another movable member supported by a frame and arranged to move in a vertical, horizontal, or rotary direction, depending upon the particular design, the whole mechanism arranged to be driven in synchronism with the hoist drum. In case of overspeeding, inadequate retardation, or overwinding, a pawl or catch controlled by the governor would engage teeth or dogs on the moving member, which through mechanical con-nections would cut off the power and set the brakes.

Recent experimental data on the methane-n-butane-water system have been combined with data in literature to present: (I) the water-vapor content of natural gases, (2) the solubility of water in hydrocarbon liquids, and (3) the solubility of natural gases in water. Since water is present in petroleum reservoirs, experimental data regarding the behavior of water in hydrocarbon-water systems is of increasing engineering importance. A survey of literature (Table I) shows that data of these types are fragmen-tary at temperatures above the hydrate region. Experimental data taken from the authors' recent investigation of the meth-ape-n-butane-water system are presented.17

A circumferential-toothed bit with novel tooth form gave improved penetration performance. In this design the exterior flank of all teeth were vertical when in rolling contact with the hole bottom. Rock chips were generated by the interior flank of the tooth displacing the rock inwardly and downslope toward the center of the hole. A unique two-cone laboratory bit assembly enabled evaluation of numerous cone and tooth configurations. Some of the variables investigated, in addition to weight on bit, rotary speed and rock type, were tooth interference, percent tooth, hole bottom angle, attack angle and relief angle. Most tests were conducted dry on a brittle synthetic sandsone or a ductile quarried limestone. Tooth configurations were found to be more significant in the ductile material. This was attributed to the deeper tooth penetration before rock failure. These studies showed that the attack angle (angle beween interior flank of the tooth and rock surface) was the controlling variable; changing the tooth configuration from the assymetric or semi-wedge to the more conventional symmetric or wedge form reduced penetration performance; and penetration performance of circumferential-type cutters was directly proportional to rotary speeds up to 200 rpm. INTRODUCTION Much of the published literature on rock-chisel interactions describe experiments wherein symmetrical wedges are vertically loaded or impacted against a smooth rock surface.1-6 are is usually taken to insure that the indentation is not made near the edge of the rock specimen less erroneous data be obtained. The literature describes relatively few studies in which the investigator deliberately attempted to take advantage of an edge or free surface. In contrast, anyone who chips ice or breaks up a concrete sidewalk almost always works near an edge. Chisel "indexing," which has been considered by some investigator1,2,6,7 makes limited application of an edge or free surface. Probably the best documented investigation into applying this idea to drilling was that of Drilling Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute.' Their "annular wing" percussion bit consisted of paired asymmetric chisels oriented so as to produce and move chips to the center of the hole. They predicted that the lowest energy requirement for chip generation would be achieved with a stepped hole bottom having a median angle of 45" to the horizontal. Results from limited tests showed that approximately 50 percent of the rock fragments were large and semi-circular in shape, as would be expected by a chisel impact near an edge. The remaining 50 percent were fine chips produced by the chisels in re-establishing the steps or ledges. Initial penetration rates with this bit were high, but they rapidly decreased. This was the result of excessive tooth wear caused by the constant friction on the gauge surfaces. The basic idea — circumferentially placed asymmetric chisels — still appears to have merit. If the concept could be applied to a rolling cutter bit, two of the shortcomings of the fixed chisel design could be overcome: (1) reduction in tooth friction, and (2) greatly increased cutter surface. Adapting asymmetric chisels to cutters rolling on an inclined hole bottom is restricted by bit geometry. The basic elements of roller rock-bit construction prevents the practical attainment of a 45" hole bottom angle. Nonetheless, experimentally it was considered desirable to investigate the influence of hole bottom angle to at least 40". This paper describes the laboratory studies conducted in evaluating the circumferential-toothed roller cutter rock bit. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE BIT ASSEMBLY The cost of constructing a sufficient number of conventional three-cone rock bits to investigate circumferential cutter performance was prohibitive. Instead, a novel two-cone laboratory assembly which used an external bearing system was designed and constructed. The external bearings made it possible to alter the journal bearing angles and thus allow a wide flexibility in cutter configuration. Fig. 1 shows the laboratory bit assembly, the various bearing mount plates and the appropriate roller cutters for drilling shallow holes having hole bottom angles of 0, 10, 20, 30 or 40". The bit was limited to a drilling depth of 1 1/2 in. at the gauge teeth and a hole diameter of 43/4 in. This more or less intermediate size bit was chosen because it gave a more realistic match between bit teeth and the rock than would a microbit. Also, the rock sample size required was convenient and easy to obtain. CIRCUMFERENTIAL CUTTERS The tooth configuration used in our initial studies is shown in the upper half of Fig. 2. All cutters used in this series had the same tooth form — 43" included tooth angle, 2" positive relief angle and a horizontal tooth flat width of 1/32 in. Each cone cuts alternate rows except for the gauge row. The row-to-row spacing in view was 1/4 in. Static loading tests conducted earlier with asymmetrical chisels had been used to establish this spacing. Phase transformations in a series of relatively pure nickel-titanium-aluminum binary and ternary alloys were studied. The purpose was to clarify age-hardening mechanisms, especially in predominantly titanium-hardened compositions. The micro-structures, as determined on a tirne-temperature-transformation basis by light and electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, were correlated with room temperature and hot hardnesses. The stability of the ? phase under nonequilibrium conditions was shown to be important in this system. MANY of the alloys designed for service in the temperature range of 1200oF (649°C) to 1800°F (980°C) are austenitic iron-.nickel base alloys hardened by titanium and aluminum. The control of high-temperature properties of these alloys has been advanced by the knowledge of microstructures provided by the equilibrium diagrams of Taylor and Floyd1 and Taylor.2, 3 However, there have been notable instances in the predominantly titanium-hardened alloys where the correlation of properties with microstructure and the equilibrium diagrams has been unsuccessful. Mihalisin and carrol14 have noted in electron microscope studies of commercial alloys of this type that a fee phase precipitates and transforms to 71 (hep Ni3Ti) in stress-rupture tests. Bieber5 found that this fee phase remained in nickel-chromium-titanium alloys even when aluminum was excluded. Age hardening in iron-nickel base alloys has been attributed to 71 by Craver, Aggen, and Dyrkacz,6 ? (fee phase based on Ni3Al) by Beattie and Hagel7 and both phases by Lena,8 Yet, on the basis of the nickel-titanium-aluminum equilibrium diagram of Taylor and Floyd shown in Fig. 1, it has been difficult to understand the presence of ? in low aluminum alloys. Furthermore, the characteristic coarse dispersion of 71 has not been commensurate with the marked aging response. Also there have been anomalous grain boundary transformations in the iron-nickel base alloys which have markedly reduced notched stress rupture properties.9 These have been related to boron content and residual cold work. Recently, Golubtsova and Mashkovich,10 Buckle and Manene11 and Bogaryatskii and Tyapkin12 have noted a transition fee Ni3Ti in titanium-hardened nickel-base alloys. It was apparent from the latter studies that a transition phase was important in the nickel-titanium-aluminum system. The purpose of this study was to identify this phase, measure its transformation characteristics and kinetics, and attempt to correlate these findings with age hardening. It was believed that time-temperature-transformation studies, because of their adaptability to transition phases, would be of most value for this investigation. Accordingly, this method of study was undertaken on relatively pure nickel-titanium-aluminum alloys with controlled variations in boron content and residual cold work. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Compositions were selected from the nickel-titanium-aluminum isothermal section of Taylor and Floyd.' THE, prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 1920 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry. INDEX NUMBERS OF OIL PRICES The analysis and comparison of price movements may be facilitated by converting actual prices into relative prices, or index numbers, with 1913 taken as a base of 100. In this way, the various price groups are expressed as percentages of the 1913 prices and may thus be readily compared with one another or with the average prices of other commodities similarly expressed. Table 1 gives the index numbers representing the average prices of crude petroleum, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil, lubricating oils, and all commodities. The last named is the index of all commodities as published by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and .is widely accepted .as the official measure of the general price level. The index numbers of oil prices were calculated by the writer from weekly quotations published in trade journals.

The kinetics of dissolution of metallic copper in aqueous cupric ammonium carbonate solutions were investigated. The major variables studied were temperature, agitation, and the cupric, cuprous, ammonia and carbonate concentrations. The rates of copper dissolution from rotating discs were determined by measuring the weight loss. The dissolution rate increased with the square root of the disc rpm and doubled when the temperature was increased from 20°c to 40°C.

Electrostatic separation of ores in its present form is generally known as the Huff process, from the name of Charles H. Huff, of Boston, Mass., through whose constant and persistent labors (with the invention of Clinton E. Dolbear as a basis) the successful commercial process embracing separative machinery and the various electrifying devices has been developed step by step, and the finances for the long period of development provided, and the method finally established and recognized throughout the world as an important and successful addition to the ore-dressing department of metallurgy. The permanent field-success of electrostatic separation began in 1908 with a 20-ton Huff experimental mill built specially for the purpose by the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Go., in Platterille, Wis., a plant which was a success from the start and was gradually increased in capacity as the market-conditions warranted to 100 tons of concentrates per day. It may be said that the history of gold in the Black Hills begins with one of South Dakota's most. interesting relics, the so-called Thoen Stone, now in the Adams Memorial Hall at Deadwood. This slab of reddish sandstone, about 14 in. square, was found in by Louis and Ivan Thoen, at the base of Lookout Mountain, near Spearfish, a town in the northern foothills of the Black Hills uplift. Both sides of the stone bear clearly legible inscriptions. One side reads: Came to these hills in 1833. Seven of us, De Lacompt, Ezra Kind, G. W. Wood, T. Brown, R. Kent, Wm. King, Indian Crow. All ded but me, Ezra Kind. Killed by Indians beyond the high hills. Got our gold June 1834. On the reverse side: Got all the gold we could carry. Our ponys all got by the Indians. I hav lost iny gun and nothing to eat, and Indians hunting me. Attempts were made to trace these men. Relatives of Brown were found in Missouri, and it was learned that he had left for the West in 1832, with one Kent. Kind's relatives were also found, and stated that he had started West the same year. None of them had been heard from since their departure. So Kind failed to get out with "all the gold we could carry"; 15 years later California became the center of the first great gold rush, and the Hills waited 40 years for their gold to be rediscovered. It is interesting to speculate on what might have been "the course of Empire" had this little group won through. The history of Dakota, of Montana, indeed, of all the Northwest, might have been very different. When, late in 1875, the goldseekers arrived, they passed quickly northward from the first discovery near Custer, and soon were established on Deadwood Creek, along which, as well as for short distances above the mouths of its tributary streams, Blacktail and Bobtail, placer operations went forward vigorously. These placers were near the northern outcrop of the Homestake ore-body. Their gold was partly derived from this, perhaps in greater quantity from the erosion of the conglomerate or cement deposits, of Potsdam time, themselves a "fossil placer" or beach deposit formed by

The generation and evaluation of solutions to body force problems is of extreme interest to the geotechnical profession, as all natural stress states must necessarily include some contribution from the weight of the material. In this chapter the elastic solution for the stress field around a circular, horizontal tunnel at an arbitrary depth beneath the surface of a half-space is reexamined. The influences of body force, initial stress, and free surface proximity are examined and related to in-situ cases. The solution as presented deals only with an isotropically elastic medium; this medium is further considered only in a half-space configuration. It is readily apparent that these restrictions impose severe limitations if analogies are attempted with in-situ cases where geologic discontinuities, inhomogeneities, and irregular boundaries exist. The question might be raised as to the propriety of geotechnically oriented researchers even considering such idealized conditions. There is, however, much to be gained from study of such solutions. The lack of geologic discontinuities and inhomogeneities allows the investigator to separate and leisurely examine such parameters as are included in the solution, without worry of interrelationships of a host of other parameters. Further, elastic solutions have had extensive usage prior to the development of such techniques as the finite-element solution. It is interesting to compare body force solutions with the external field solutions which in the past have been used for design purposes. Finally, the exact solution may be used to verify the accuracy of the finite-element type of solution. The mathematical solution on which this chapter is based was originally developed by R. D. Mindlin.l Because of the complexity and length of the solution, no attempt was made to determine the resultant stress fields until the advent of the present-day high-speed digital computer. How-

Invar is the preeminent low-expansion metal by virtue of the fact that it can be prepared with a zero coefficient of expansion at atmospheric temperature. This fact suggests that there is little room for improvement in the expansion properties of the low-expansion nickel steels. The inference is true, however, only so far as the expansion at and near atmospheric temperature is concerned, because the expansivity of invar starts to increase rapidly on heating above 100" C. and soon reaches the value of copper. Guillaumel met this situation by increasing the nickel content above that of invar. By that expedient, alloys having low expansivity under higher temperatures were obtained, but not without a large increase in minimum expansivity. The increase in minimum expansivity with increasing nickel content severely limits the technical applications of these alloys at high temperatures. Prospects of improving the expansion characteristics of the nickel steels is offered by alloying. Search for an advantageous alloying addition by analogy with other alloy systems, however, is not productive because the low-expansion characteristic is unique with that system. The rule of mixtures usually gives a fair value of the expansivity of other solid-solution alloys, but in the iron-nickel systems gives a value of 18 X 10-6 per deg. C. whereas the actual value is 1 X 10-6 per deg. C. Apparently suitable additions are not to be deduced from such ingenuous considerations. Recognition of the fact that the temperature range of low expansivity in nickel steels is terminated with loss of magnetism affords a more promising basis for the selection of an advantageous element. One may expect from that fact that additions of nonmagnetic elements to the iron-nickel alloys are detrimental to the low-expansion characteristic. Indeed, carbon, manganese, silicon, copper and chromium are detrimental to the expansion properties and no nonmagnetic element is reported to be beneficial. Our task is to make a prospecting trip over the whole field of mineral economics which other lectures of this series will explore in detail. The old timers who really understand mining warn us that its economic aspects are often neglected, and this we find to be true. We shall try to show that mineral economics deserves recognition as a separate branch of economic science with urgent and distinctive problems of its own; that to cultivate it requires a fusing of the viewpoint of economics with that of geology and engineering; and that the help of both economists and technical men is needed in exploring its problems and in training workers in the field. To save time, we shall pass over the familiar subjects of production, consumption, and distribution which bulk as large in the market analysis of the minerals as they do in other commodities. The existence of these problems may be taken for granted and attention centered rather upon those that differentiate mining from other branches of industry. What then is the case for an economics of minerals? Why set up a new compartment in a branch of knowledge that is already well subdivided? Do not the established principles of economic theory apply here as elsewhere? In pleading for recognition of mineral economics one often finds that

COAL-CLEANING plants using the launder process generally wash the fine coal (minus 3/8 or minus 5/16-in.) separately in a plant consisting of washing launders or troughs placed one below another and sometimes supplemented by additional washing equipment such as tables and jigs. The coal and its associated impurities enters the feed end of the top launder, with a current of push water. As the material moves along the impurities, being heavier than coal, settle toward the bottom of the launder and are drawn off, with some coal, through "free discharge" boxes to the launder below. These boxes were given their name because their discharge falls freely; that is, it does not discharge into a water seal. Thus the impurities are progressively concentrated in the lower launders until box products are sufficiently free of coal to be discharged to refuse. The overflows of the upper launders go to clean coal while the overflow of the lowest launder, and perhaps that of the one immedi-ately above, is usually recirculated to the plant feed. Thus the bulk of the clean coal is removed rapidly and the impurities are concentrated more slowly. The chief purpose of this paper is to present the cleaning data of such a plant under different operating conditions.

THE Lehigh Navigation Coal Company Inc. operates steep-pitch, relatively deep mines in the Panther Creek Valley, at the eastern end of the southern anthracite coal field. Commercially minable coal beds are the Mammoth,† Primrose, Orchard, and Buck Mountain,‡ their respective thicknesses average 50, 15, 1o and 12 ft. Sand slates immediately overlie and underlie these beds, though in some locations sandstone or conglomerate beds occur. Underground operations extend to a depth of 1200 ft. below the surface, and comprise a bulk of virgin work on the lower levels, and a small amount of remining on the upper levels. With increase in depth, ventilation has become a more important factor. DEVELOPMENT In early days slopes or drifts were driven in the outcropping coal on the hillsides. Subsequent development was by water-level tunnels, with portals above high water in Panther Creek. These tunnels have been maintained because they intercept and drain much water that enters the mined-out portion of the bed and otherwise would follow down to the deep workings. Below these tunnels, the coal was customarily developed by slopes. Muleways, which are zigzag chutes easy to travel, were also driven to connect lower openings with the water levels. When it became necessary to go still deeper, the slopes were abandoned, and vertical multicompartment shafts were sunk from the surface. Levels have been at vertical intervals of from 195 to 250 ft. Recent practice has been toward the latter spacing; splitting the total lift, however, by starting to mine from chutes extending halfway up to the level above. Chutes customarily are spaced at 50, 60 or 70-ft. centers along the gangways. At some mines, additional shafts have been sunk from the surface to the level containing the main pumping station, and these carry the discharge lines from the pumps. As the mines are ventilated by the exhausting system, both the hoisting and so-called water shafts serve as intakes. The main fan is always on the surface, and is connected with the return airways from the various levels by an air hole or a vertical shaft. For economy, when the present deepest levels were developed, main return-air shafts or air holes were not extended to the new level, but connections were made from the new level to that above by two or more holes. It is doubtful that this method will be continued, as complications in the system, increased resistance to flow, and other difficulties undoubtedly will counterbalance any economies this provision may afford.

DURING the past few years the writer has been impressed by the close relation of many epigenetic orebodies with anticlinal structures. In the literature on ore deposits there is occasional mention that an oreshoot or district is on an anticline, but in most of the descriptions no weight or significance is attached to the relation, and usually the fact is concealed in a mass of structural detail. A few writers have stressed the relationship in a few districts or on a certain type of deposit. Church, Spurr, Butler, Stahl and Schuette have called attention to certain features, but the general extent of such a correlation has not been made known in any publication that the author has seen. A recent article1 on the localization of ore deposits, by well-known geologists, does not consider this common association. The author has seen in the field a number of the structural features described, and in addition has made a fairly complete review of the literature. This paper presents enough of the examples found to show the frequency of the relation to anticlines, and since only a few deposits on synclines are known, all of these of any importance of which the writer knows are mentioned. With certain qualifications which are discussed later, epigenetic ore deposits of replacement or vein type are mostly found where local upwarps of the earth's crust have taken place. Where formations antedating the ore deposits are present in the proper attitude to demonstrate vertical warping (i. e., more or less horizontal beds) the structural feature on which a mineral district, or mineralized area is located is almost always anticlinal, or domelike in nature. Some or even most of the ore deposits in a given district may be on the flanks of the upwarp, but few major districts are located definitely on downwarped areas. Synclinal basins within certain limits of size appear to be unfavorable to the type of fracturing that admits ore-bearing solutions.

THREE years ago the writer presented a paper on the trend of development in the wrought iron industry,1 wherein was described a process in the development of which he has been a factor, which at that time had passed through several years of progressive experimental development but which had not then been put upon a commercial scale of operation. The present paper deals with two years of observation and experience in the commercial operation of a plant by the A. A Byers Co. at Warren, Ohio. It will not enter into the controversial field of the relative merit of wrought iron and steel in various classes of service, nor will it elaborate upon the characteristic services or fields of utility to which wrought iron is particularly adapted. It is sufficient to state that the wrought iron industry is upon a substantial basis and that the material finds service in pipe, where its advantages are in superior corrosion, fatigue, welding and threading qualities; in bar iron for staybolts, engine bolts, and rivets, demanding maximum service against corrosion and fatigue; in plates for corrosion service; and in chains, because of welding and shock-resisting characteristics. In short, ability to withstand the stresses of shock and vibration, or the ravages of corrosion, to hold protective coatings, and to give maximum efficiency in welding, are its features of relative superiority. If these features were not well recognized, the wrought iron industry would have shrunk to insignificance in the face of high costs and acknowledged limitations in manufacture. To charge that this industry is built upon a structure of assumption, psychology, and improperly weighed evidence is an impeachment of the integrity or belittling of the powers of observation of users through many centuries of service experiences.

Petroleum engineers are displaying considerable interest in those fundamental properties of matter and energy that control the phenomena of oil and gas production. The subject is a difficult one to investigate by laboratory experiments for two reasons: (1) it is impossible to reproduce in the laboratory the scale of forces and dimensions that exist in the underground reservoir; (2) if we attempt to scale down the dimensions we are unable to reduce all proportionally. It is as if we tried to construct a model blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore, and reduced all lineal dimensions. We should find that the interstices between the miniature chunks of ore would not permit rapid transfer of gases, that combustion and heat transfer would not take place as in the full size furnace and that, in short, the contraption would not work. Just so, when we attempt to make a reduced scale oil field we find we must have, not only miniature reservoir and miniature wells, but "miniature" sand, 011, gas, etc. Much valuable work, however, has been done along these experimental lines and more will no doubt follow, but investigators should bear this point in mind and strive to attain dimensional homogeneity and dynamical similarity in order that their conclusions may be translated into terms applying to the oil reservoir. As Gibson says,' "These conditions are attained when all terms of the physical equation have the same dimensions, . . . when all corresponding particles of the two systems trace out similar paths and when the velocities are such as to make all corresponding forces acting on two such particles in the same ratio." It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the mechanics of fluid movement as it pertains to the oil pool and to point out the complexity of the laws of fluid delivery under the conditions often found. We have to do, fundamentally, with confined fluids, possessing potential energy whose expenditure is restricted by certain properties of the confining media and of the fluids themselves. An apparatus is described for the measurement of the pressure-volume-temperature relations of pure substances, simple mixtures and complex mixtures with an over-all absolute uncertainty, which is usually not more than 0.2 per cent. The equipment is suitable for studies in the gaseous, two-phase, and liquid regions. The behavior of such systems may be investigated at pressures as high as 10,000 lb. per sq. in. for temperatures between 70 and 600 F. The methods of measurement and the construction of the apparatus are described in some detail. The measurement of the volumetric behavior of multicomponent systems requires the simultaneous measurement of the pressure, volume, temperature and weight of each component of the system. In the present apparatus a sample having constant weight is investigated at a number of independently controlled pressures and temperatures, therefore it is necessary only to establish the weight of each component added before a given set of measurements. This method is in distinction to that in which the total volume remains constant and the pressure is varied by addition or removal of material, the system having variable weight. An objective in the design of the apparatus to be described was to develop equipment that would yield results involving no uncertainties larger than 0.25 per cent throughout the range of pressures from 150 to 10,000 Ib. per sq. in. at temperatures between 70" and 600" F. Although this over-all absolute uncertainty of measurement may not appear to be small, it necessitated care in the plans for control and measurement of each of the fundamental variables. In general, any uncertainty greater than 0.05 per cent in the pressure, volume, absolute temperature or weight of each component was considered undesirable; therefore the attempt was made to obtain a precision of measurement in each case such that the absolute uncertainty would be only half this amount except in certain regions near the ends of the experimental range of the variable under consideration.

An apparatus is described for the measurement of the pressure-volume-temperature relations of pure substances, simple mixtures and complex mixtures with an over-all absolute uncertainty, which is usually not more than 0.2 per cent. The equipment is suitable for studies in the gaseous, two-phase, and liquid regions. The behavior of such systems may be investigated at pressures as high as 10,000 lb. per sq. in. for temperatures between 70 and 600 F. The methods of measurement and the construction of the apparatus are described in some detail. The measurement of the volumetric behavior of multicomponent systems requires the simultaneous measurement of the pressure, volume, temperature and weight of each component of the system. The Aztec mine is not widely known, by reason of its isolation and the relative insignificance of its tonnage; financially, however, it has an enviable record and geologically it is extremely interesting. The town of Baldy, Colfax County, the mine camp, at an elevation of 10,000 ft. (3048 m.) is 8 mi. west of Ute Park, the terminus of a branch of the A. T. & S. I?. Ry. The mining tract was designated by the Maxwell Land Grant Co. as the Aztec Reservation, and lies on the east slope of Mt. Baldy, the summit of which, 12,491 ft. (3807 m.), is one of the highest in the state. Rich copper float was found on the northeast slope of the mountain in 1865, and discovery work was begun the next year. At the same time, gold placers were found on Willow Creek, on the southwest side of the mountain, and the Elizabethtown settlement followed shortly. Gold washing lasted many years. In 1867, placer gold was found also on Ute Creek, the tracing of which to its source led to the locating of the Aztec mine by Lynch, Dogherty, and Fosley in the following year. The early production came from the contact of shale and sandstone or from sandstone immediately above the contact. Exact record of production is lacking, but L. C. Gratonl gives estimates ranging between $1,250,000 and $1,500,000, of which about $1,000,000 was taken out in the first four years. After the exhaustion of the early bonanza, production continued intermittently until 1909, when the Maxwell Land Grant Co, undertook systematic development, through four adits at intervals of 75 ft. vertically or approximately 100 ft. on the dip of the contact, which was thought to contain generally a quartz-pyrite vein.
