I had the honor to present to the American Institute of Mining Engineers at the Pittsburg meeting, February, 1896, a paper having the foregoing title, in which I said : " It has generally been accepted as a fact that cast-iron, under the influence of repeated shocks, becomes brittle, and will finally break under a blow which otherwise it would have withstood. It will probably surprise metallurgists, therefore, to learn that experiment disproves the supposed fact, and establishes exactly its opposite. " The result of about a thousand tests of bars of cast-iron of all grades, from the softest foundry mixtures to the strongest car-wheel metal, enables me to assert with confidence that, within limits, cast-iron is materially strengthened by subjection to repeated shocks or blows." This Paper contains a comprehensive survey of the known electron-hole radiative recombination mechanisms in the family of III-V compounds. Because of space limitations, the luminescence properties of each III- V compound are not reviewed separately and exhaustively. Instead, the different known types of recombination processes are discussed in turn and exemplified with reference to the III- V compound in which they were first recognized, or are best understood. Electron-hole recombinations usually occur predominantly at impurities or lattice defects either introduced de1iberately or inadvertently present, but radiative intrinsic interband electron-hole recombinations, which occur in perfect crystals, have been observed. Recombination processes which involve the participation of impurities or lattice defects ("extrinsic" recombinations) considered include transitions in which a) free carriers recombine with carriers trapped at impurities ("free to bound" transitions) , b) electrons bound at donor impurities recombine with holes trapped at acceptor impurities ("donor-acceptor pair" recombinations), C) excitons bound to charged or neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine radiatively (both "resonance" and "two-electron" "bound exci-ton" transitions have been observed), d) excitons bound to neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine non-radiatively (an example of an "Auger" recombination), and e) excitons bound to impurities with the same number of valence electrons as the host atom which they replace ("isoelectronic " traps) recombine radiatively. In addition, Auger recombination processes involving one or more free carriers have been observed. These extrinsic processes all involve impurities which are present as point defects. Some apparently well-authenticated examples of the recombination of excitons bound to complex impurity-lattice defect centers including nearest-neighbor donor-acceptor pairs are also discussed. Identificalions of the transitions involved in stimulated emission from the direct gap III-V compounds are briefly reviewed. Although the examples of these recombination mechanisms are selected from the III-IV compounds ia this review, these processes have quite general relevance in semiconducting crystalline solids; irrdeed most of them have also been identified in the 11- VI compounds and elernental semzconductors. THE development of crystal growth and purification techniques in recent years and concurrent advances in the understanding of physical processes in solids has accelerated the development of a wide variety of solid-state electronic devices of proven utility. These de- vices are generally used for switching or amplifying operations in electrical circuits. Most solid-state circuit elements are very photosensitive. This photo-sensitivity is generally undesirable and the single-crystal chip forming the active portion of the solid-state device is mounted in an opaque container. The photosensitivity is made use of in phototransis-tors and photodiodes, which are among the most sensitive detectors of electromagnetic radiation particularly in the near infrared.' In these devices, light is converted into electrical power. The solid-state lamp utilizes the inverse effect, namely the conversion of electrical power into light. There is an increasing tendency to use single-crystal diodes rather than the earlier electroluminescent cells in which the active material is present as a powder embedded in a suitable dielectric.' The radiation is emitted at a rate far in excess of the thermal equilibrium rate for the frequencies and temperatures involved; i.e., luminescence occurs. The development of practically efficient solid-state lamps is at an early stage compared with solid- state circuit elements or even photodetectors. Considerable progress has been made in recent years, however.3 The present review is devoted to a survey of the radiative recombination processes in the semiconducting compound crystalline solids formed from elements in groups I11 and V in the periodic table. These materials exhibit the full range of known recombination processes in solids. In fact many of these processes were discovered in 111-V semiconductors. Nonradiative recombination processes, which control the lutninescence efficiency, are also discussed. Luminescence is efficiently excited in semiconductors through processes which produce large excess concentrations of free electrons and holes in the energy bands of the crystal. Transitions induced by lattice defects or impurities usually predominate in the recombination process. By contrast, luminescence in the conventional fluorescent lamp is excited by optical absorption at the luminescent impurity center itself (the activator) and/or at a second type of impurity center (the sensitizer). This latter type of photoluminescence process, occurring in doped ionic crystals with wide band gaps, is outside the scope of this review.4 I) ENERGY BAND DESCRIPTION OF ELECTRON STATES IN CRYSTALS The energy band description of the energy states available to an electron in a crystal forms the basis of our understanding of the empirical division of crystalline solids into metals, semiconductors, and insulators in accordance with their electrical and optical properties.' A technique was developed for depositing single -crystal films of silicon on single-crystal sapphire substrates via the pyrolytic decomposition of SiH4/H2 mixtures. Electron diffraction and X-ray Laue reflection examinations of these films revealed single-crystal patterns. These films were characterized by measuring conductivity type, thickness, resistivity, and Hall mobility. Chemical etching, dislocation staining, and electron-microscopy examination have indicated the presence of low-angle grain boundaries and microtwinning in the silicon films. The role of the sapphire substrate with respect to its quality, orientation, surface finish, and thermal and chemical treatment was investigated. Hall mobility as a function of sapphire orientation was measured. A mobility equal to 88 pct of bulk silicon mobility was attained. Insulated-gate field-effect transistors which have a transconductance of 4000 pmho at 6 ma were fabricated using these films. THE technology of the fabrication of microelectronic circuits with active and passive components directly on a single wafer of semiconductor material has attained a high degree of perfection during the last few years. One inherent difficulty with the single-wafer approach has been undesirable coupling between components arising from the common base material. Several techniques have been developed for minimizing this coupling and obtaining good electrical isolation between components; however, these result in extra capacitance being added to the circuit. The extraneous capacitance of the connecting leads, resistors, and capacitors degrade circuit performance and limit the high-frequency operation of these circuits. Recently there has been considerable interestl-3 in the deposition of silicon films upon insulating substrates. The use of silicon as the semiconductor allows the subsequent utilization of the large amount of technology which has been developed for silicon for the fabrication of good active components. A sapphire substrate supplies an excellent insulating material which at the same time gives a thermal-conductivity improvement of an order of magnitude over glass-type substrates. This paper will describe the results obtained for the deposition of single-crystal silicon layers upon single-crystal sapphire substrates as well as the characterization of these films. I) APPARATUS The 'system used for the growth of silicon films on sapphire substrates by means of the pyrolysis of SiH4/H2 mixtures is shown in Fig. 1. The all-quartz reaction chamber is water-cooled and includes a quartz optical-flat window for use in conjunction with a 5 kw, 2.5 Mc per sec constant-temperature controlled rf generator. The temperature sensor for the rf generator is a thermopile which is focused through the quartz optical flat onto the susceptor surface. With this system the rf generator will hold the temperature of the susceptor to about +0.3°C at 1200°C. The susceptor is supported on a quartz sled inclined to the gas flow to increase the uniformity of the deposition. The water jacket surrounding the reaction chamber is used to keep the quartz wall temperature low enough to limit the decomposition of the silane to the rf-heated susceptor which contains the sapphire substrates. This eliminates the reaction of silicon with the hot quartz to form SiO which deposits out on the apparatus walls, thus obscuring vision, and interferes with the optical measurements of the temperature as well as with the growth process itself. Provision is also made for "n"- and 'p"-type doping by using mixtures of either phosphine or diborane in hydrogen which are added to the silane during the growth process. The hydrogen used is the purest commercially available tank hydrogen further purified by use of a palladium diffuser. The susceptors which were used include 1) spectro-scopically pure graphite, 2) high-purity molybdenum, 3) high-resistivity silicon using a low-resistivity insert to facilitate coupling to the rf generator, 4) silicon carbide-coated graphite. The latter two susceptor materials produced silicon films on sapphire substrates with more reproducible resistivities. Prior to silicon deposition all connecting lines as well as the reaction chamber are thoroughly flushed with argon and then hydrogen. After the hydrogen flow is set, the growth temperature is adjusted to 11009 to 1150°C, and when thermal equilibrium is reached the silane flow is started. The flow rate of the hydrogen must be fast enough so that turbulent flow occurs in the size of reaction tube used, otherwise a streaked nonuniform silicon deposit occurs. After the deposition

Studies of the effect of size of the specimen on the change of slopes of Stages I and 11 by surface removal showed that the change of Stage I was independent of size with respect to the polishing rate; however, the change in the slope of Stage 11 with polishing rate increased directly in proportion to the surface area. The removal of the surface during the test affected the plastic deformation characteristics of gold, aluminum, and zinc single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum. The apparent activation energy of aluminum was found to be decreased markedly by removing the surface during the deformation process. In previous papers1-3 it was shown that the surface played an important role in the plastic deformation of metals. By removing the surface layers of a crystal of aluminum by electrolytic polishing during tensile deformation, it was found that the slopes of Stages I, II, and III were decreased and the extents of Stages I and II were increased when the rate of metal removal was increased. By removing a sufficient amount of the surface layer after a specimen had been deformed into the Stage I region, upon reloading, the flow stress was the same as the original critical resolved shear stress and the extent of Stage I was the same as if the specimen had not been deformed previously. The slope of Stage I was decreased 50 pct and that of Stage 11 decreased 25 pct when the rate of metal removal was 50 X 10"5 ipm. These data show that in Stage I the work hardening is controlled almost entirely by the surface conditions, while in Stages 11 and III both surface conditions and internal obstacles to dislocation motion are important. It appears that during the egress of dislocations from the crystal, a fraction of them becomes stuck or trapped in the surface regions and a layer of a high dislocation concentration is formed. This layer would not only impede the motion of dislocations, but would provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. In this case, there will be a stress, opposite to that of the applied stress, imposed on the dislocation source and dislocations moving in the region beyond this layer. It has been found convenient to refer to this layer as a "debris" layer. The "debris" layer may be similar to the dislocation tangle observed by thin-film electron microscope techniques.4 Reported in this paper are the results of studies on the effects of removing the surface during plastic deformation on aluminum crystals of various sizes. The effects of the surface on the yield point behavior of gold and high-purity aluminum crystals as well as the creep behavior were also determined. The effects of surface removal on polycrystalline aluminum (1100-0 and 7075-T6) are also reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE For those portions of the investigation involving creep and tensile specimens, single crystals, having a 3-in. gage length and a nominal 1/8-in. sq cross section, were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. The single crystals were prepared from materials which had initial purities of 99.997, 99.999, 99.999, and 99.999 pct for Al, Cu, Zn, and Au, respectively. The aluminum specimens for the size effect studies were prepared through the use of a three-tier mold in which crystals having a cross section of 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in. were grown from a common seed. The mold design was arranged so that one 1/2-in. crystal, two 1/4-in. crystals, and four 1/8-in, crystals of the same orientation could be cast. With this technique, it was possible to obtain only one set of crystals with the same orientation. Because of this limitation, it was not possible to determine both the changes of extent and slope of the various stages since a large number of crystals of the same orientation would have been required. Instead, only the change of slope as a function of the rate of metal removal was studied by abruptly altering the current density of the electrolytic polishing bath at various strains within the regions of Stages I and 11. The experimental techniques used for the tensile studies were essentially the same as those used previously.1,3 The specimens were deformed in a 200-lb Instron tensile machine, usually at a rate of 10-5 sec-5. SINCE the presentation, by the writer, of the initial paper on the embrittlement of copper,1 the subject has been investigated further along two separate lines. The first series of investigations involves the "double-deoxidized" copper, while the second series is devoted to single deoxidizers other than those used in the investigations reported upon last year. The object of these experiments is to develop a type of copper that will show the minimum of detrimental effects after having been exposed to alternate oxidation and reduction. The fabrication of this material necessitates the use of alternate oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, at temperatures ranging up to 900° C. Following this treatment it is essential that the soundness and strength of the copper be unimpaired, even in sections of only a few thousandths of an inch in thickness.

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Braxil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the .rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 m thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P2O5. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tons that average a bout 13 % P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

[ ] I. THE REDUCING ACTION OF CARBON AND OF HYDROCARBONS. Carbon has long been recognized as one of the most powerful reducing agents in the deposition of ores. Investigations, made by myself, of the zinc- and lead-deposits in Southwest Missouri, in the region centering about Joplin, where the formation of the metallic sulphides has been due to the action of bitumen, carbonaceous shales and bituminous coal, Lace afforded abundant evidence that the solid oxygenated hydrocarbons, particularly, when in fine powder and in suspension in the waters circulating through the ore-bodies, are the most energetic and powerful reducing agents known. Bitumen, liberated by the decomposition of the ore-bearing limestone, is found in the Joplin mines in all degrees of fluidity and hardness, dependent on the amount of oxidation it has undergone. From semi-fluid maltha it grades into partly oxidized mineral-pitch, which, by further oxidation, changes to hard asphalt, finally breaking up, from continued absorption of oxygen, into a fine powder resembling in appearance powdered coal. In this condition oxidized bitumen, from its light gravity, is transported readily in suspension in the underground circulating-waters. From time immemorial the fissure-vein has been held the simplest type of ore-deposit. The prominence given to it by Cotta and his disciples, from their study of the mines of the Erzgebirge, is impressed upon technical literature; and, in consequence, the ores which carry the valuable metals have been supposed to occur mainly in fissures, cleaving the rocks in diverse directions, and the noblest type of vein has been deemed that which cut across the country independent of its structure, whether evidenced as bedding, foliation or cleavage, and which was identified with rents produced in the rocky crust of the earth. As so conceived, the vein was a fissure filled with ore, extending through the country for a varying distance, and continued downward to a depth more or less proportionate to its longitudinal extent. The vein-material was bounded by an encasement of rock, and those immediate surfaces which limited it on either aide were called " walls." These primary conceptions have become modified by the experience of modern mining in widely separated regions. The study of lode-formations has led to the recognition of notable departures from the supposed normal structure of the veins of Saxony and Cornwall, the two classic homes of early economic geology. Typically the walls of a vein are conceived as parallel rockplanes enclosing the ore; the upper one being called the " hanging-," and the lower the "foot-wall."* Walls are rarely alike. Even where a vein traverses a homogeneons formation, such as a massive crystalline rock, it is usually found that the surface which bounds it underneath

This investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. Henry M. Howe, of the Department of Metallurgy, Columbia University, who, in a letter to the author, dated October 23, 1900, wrote as follows, suggesting the subject of this dissertation : "The extraction of silver from copper mattes by either the Ziervogel or the Augustin process depends upon converting the silver into silver sulphate by means of the sulphuric anhydride evolved from the decomposition of ferrous sulphate and cupric sulphate, which are formed during the roasting operation itself from the iron and copper sulphides present. "It occurred to me, some time prior to the autumn of 1897, that these processes might be made much easier by adding to them, at the proper stage, ferrous or cupric sulphate, or both, in the form of green or blue vitriol. That is, instead of having to rely solely on our ability to generate these sulphates in this very delicate roasting operation, my idea was that we could add a small quantity of already-prepared sulphate at the proper state of roasting, viz., at or before the period when the solphatizing of the silver occurs. The comprehensive audit of the accounts of a mining company is extremely important in its relations to the legal situation and obligations of the corporation, the personal liability of the directors, and the interests of the investing public. A consideration of the subject as affecting the professional duties and fixing the responsibility of a mining engineer engaged in the expert examination of a mine or in charge of mining operations, is equally important, though this phase of the question is not often presented systematically.

The application of oil to coal for-the reduction of dust has greatly increased the consumers' satisfaction with solid fuels, especially those for domestic use. The combination of oil-treated coal and automatic firing by a small stoker has made possible clean, automatic heating with bituminous coal. This, with the added pressure of competition by other fuels, has caused a rapid development of oil treating practice. A variety of materials derived" from petroleum oils is available from which one may choose for treating a par-ticular coal. Until recently, however, little information had been published to guide the choice. It is most im-portant that the proper type and amount of oil be used in order that all coals marketed as "dustless" will be reason-ably dustless, and thereby maintain a good reputation for oil-treatment. During the past two and one-half years, an investigation of a number of the problems related to the treatment of coal with oil has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute. This project was jointly sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research. Inc., Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Sun Oil Company, and Viking Manufacturing Company. A progress report giving the principal results of the work of the first year was presented before the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 1937.1 The present paper is a summary of the entire inves-tigation.

THE manufacture of gas masks by the Chemical Warfare Service, U. S. A., required preparation of the carbon used in the canisters. The largest plant for the production of this carbon was situated at the works of the Astoria Light, Heat and Power Co., at Astoria, N. Y.; this paper will deal1 with the pyrometry equipment at that plant. Commercial charcoal was found unsuitable for use in gas masks because of its low power of absorption and its poor resistance to abrasion. The best raw material for the production of carbon was found to be coconut shells, but any kind of nut shells or fruit pits were used when sufficient quantities of coconut shells could not be obtained. The shells were first carbonized in retorts, the carbon was then crushed and screened between 8 and 16 mesh, and finally submitted to a special heat-treatment in air; steam treatment was later substituted for treatment in air. The production of gas-mask carbon on a commercial scale was begun at Astoria about Aug. 1, 1917. Temperature control was essential during the initial carbonization of the shells, as well as during the air or steam treatment, and pyrometers were installed for this purpose. The installation and maintenance of all pyrometry equipment was done by the pyrometry department, consisting of an officer in charge, an assistant, and two men. A special pyrometry laboratory was maintained in which all repairs were made.

THE widespread interest in the alloys of beryllium with copper is due principally to the fact that certain compositions show very favorable precipitation-hardening characteristics and are, in fact, the strongest nonferrous alloys known at the present time. Investigations have been conducted by Masing and Dahl and others on the physical characteristics of ternary beryllium alloys, in an attempt to produce precipitation-hardening effects with a smaller amount of beryllium than that required in the binary copper-beryllium alloys (2.0 to 2.5 per cent Be). The results of these investigations show that ternary alloys of beryllium with Cu-Sn, Cu-Al and Cu-Zn, among others, exhibit promising improvements in physical properties after precipitation-hardening treatment and, while the increases in properties obtained are not as high as those realized from the binary copper-beryllium alloys, excellent properties are: obtained with beryllium contents averaging about one-half the amount required in the binary alloys. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the equilibrium relations of certain alloys containing copper, tin and beryllium. The alpha-phase boundary of the ternary system is given for alloys containing from. 0 to 1 per cent beryllium. The equilibrium conditions beyond the alpha-phase boundary are presented for alloys containing up to 32 per cent tin and 1 per cent beryllium. The data were collected by means of

THE advances in basic open-hearth practice which have occurred during the past decade, have been principally in the direction of the physical development of larger units, decreased fuel consumption and increased length of furnace campaigns. However gratifying the economies which have resulted from these improvements are, it must be granted that like advances in chemical, physical-chemical and metallurgical knowledge pertaining to open-hearth practice would have added greatly to these already attained reductions in costs and it is the purpose of this paper to stimulate the discussion and study of these phases of cooperation and their relation to ingot yields. DEFINITION AND CALCULATION OF LOSSES In discussing basic open-hearth yields, the writer refers to the ingot yields obtained in the process of converting pig iron, scrap and ore to steel. In this conversion some scrap is produced. The difference between the total weight of ingots and scrap produced and the original metallic charge, constitutes the loss. Basic open-hearth yields vary considerably, and while some of the divergencies can be explained metal-lurgically because of differences in slag analysis, proportion of pig charges, and character of steel made, there often remain differences that apparently do not readily disclose themselves. In reconciling yields by the usual accepted methods of calculation, one is often forced to evaluate large losses as "unaccounted for." Such a system is prone to accept these large losses as inherent to the operation and not susceptible of appraisement and correction. It is obvious that if the ingot yield, plus the scrap recovered subtracted from 100 per cent. determines the loss, a drop in yield may increase the loss or the scrap, and both contribute to a monetary loss. To be sure, one can subdivide these unaccounted for losses into various components, such as metallics in slag, free Fe in slag, spillage, etc., and thereby reduce the amount of losses considered as "unaccounted for." If empirical methods could indicate with some degree of accuracy all losses, however slight, the undetermined losses become appreciably smaller and resultant calculations will check actual

DuRing the past few years, general interest in the steel-producing and steel-consuming industries has been centered on the so-called "inherent characteristics" of steels. While often vaguely described, these characteristics are known to influence the response to heat-treatment and the hardening characteristics of the material. Although most of the recent papers and discussions have associated the "inherent characteristics" with the austenitic grain size and emphasized the importance of it, comparatively little is known of the variables that may affect the size of the austenite grain. The work to be described in this paper was carried out during the course of a study on the inherent characteristics of tool steel containing one per cent carbon. The discrepancies encountered in the determination and classification of the austenitic grain size led to an investigation of some of the variants influencing the austenitic grain size as determined by standard methods. Methods of Determining Austenitic Grain Size The present methods used for the determination of the austenitic grain size may briefly be classified in two groups: 1. Etching at room temperature to reveal the austenite grain size prior to cooling. 2. Etching at elevated temperatures, cooling to room temperature, and observing the structural conditions that existed at the temperature from which cooling occurred. The outstanding methods of the first group are: (1) the McQuaid-Ehn test, (2) optimum rate of cooling, (3) quenching and etching. McQuaid-Ehn Test.—This established and accepted test does not need much elaboration. It consists of pack carburizing at a definite temperature for a standard period of time and slowly cooling in the furnace. The temperature is 1700" F. (925' C.) and the time is 8 hr. The interpretation and evaluation of this test are fairly well defined in the A.S.T.M.

This DaoerAA calls to attention for the first time, to the writer's knowledge, a purported recovery of oil by substantially horizontal gas cycling that is considerably in excess of 50 per cent of the oil originally in place. The average angle of dip along the path of travel of the gas is less than one degree of arc. The best recovery by gas cycling previously brought to the writer's attention1 occurred in the case of the Mile Six Field in Peru, where about 68 per cent of the original oil in place has so far been recovered. In this case, however. the recovery was greatly aided 1)y the high dip angle of about 17.5". An approximate estimate of recovery was made by the method developed by the writer' for the case of the Cook Ranch Field, using an average relative permeability ratio function dictated by past experience with a number of good quality sandstones. A result of about 40 per cent recovery of the original oil in place wa* obtained after the 8.5 pore volumes of cumulative gas cycling undergone by the Cook Ranch Field. Tile writer desires to emphasize what appears to him as the sound engineering practiced at Cook Ranch, and also the care attending the taking of data and the high quality of the calculations made. It is impossible to take issue on factual grounds with any of the conclusions drawn in the paper. It is, however, desired to point out the difficulty of explaining the unexpectedly favorable oil recovery on ordinary theoretical grounds. It would be of interest to know whether relative permeability ratios have been measured on the Cook sand. The operator is inclined to attribute some of the excess benefit to settling of the oil across the bedding planes into the lower part of the sand. It is difficult for the writer to appreciate the importance of such an effect, inasmuch as the concomitant opening of excessive vacated pore space in the upper part of the sand would he expected to cause excessive bypassing of the gas. WELGE Welge has poined out clearly the difficulty of applying material-balance procedures in calculating the Performance of low-pressure, dispersed gas injection operations. There can be no argument that even with the most favorable assumptions of K,/K,, and with cumulative gas cycling in excess of normal expectations, the calculated oil recovery will be considerably less than the 72.5 per cent recovery realized from this project to Jan. 1, 1951. There probably are at least two reasons for the unusually high recovery from this reservoir, the effects of which would be difficult or impossible to calculate by known methods: 1. The operator did not use the same injection wells for the entire operation, and exercised considerable control over producing GOR by changing the locations of injection wells whenever well performance indicated excessive bypassing. Fifty-six wells were used for injection, not over 29 of which were in use simultaneously. This procedure resulted in frequent shifting of the fluid movement patterns in the reservoir and undoubtedly increased the ultimate recovery. The writer knows of no satisfactory procedure for calculating the effect of this practice. 2. Vertical movement of oil across the bedding planes of the reservoir rock hy gravity drainage tended to maintain a relatively high oil saturation, and hence a favorable K,/K, ratio, in the lower sections of the reservoir. As pointed out by Welge, this condition has aggravated the tendency for high producing GOR, but at the same time it has resulted in increased oil recovery. As may be seen from the performance charts for the various battery areas, operating (GOR'S have been quite high for the last several years of reported history.

For his achievement in building the Panama Canal, Major-Gen. George W. Goethals was presented, on May 22, the John Fritz medal, the highest mark of distinction in the engineering profession. In the absence, in Europe, of Clemens Herschel, chairman of the Board of Award, Charles F. Rand presided over the meeting. Col. John J. Carty, who was chairman of the Board of Award at the time the medal was awarded to Gen. Goethals, and who ordinarily would have presented the medal, was detained in Paris by Government work, so the presentation was made by Ambrose Swasey. When calling the assembly to order, the Chairman said: This medal has been awarded by a Board representing four of the National Engineering Societies: American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The medal was established in 1902, in honor of that great American engineer, John Fritz, and has never been awarded except to very distinguished men. In. 1902, the first award was made to John Fritz for scientific and industrial achievement. In 1905, to Lord Kelvin for his work in cable telegraphy and other scientific attainments. In 1906, to George Westinghouse for the invention and development of the air brake. In 1907, to Alexander Graham Bell for the invention and introduction of the telephone. In 1908, to Thomas A. Edison for the invention of the duplex and quadruplex telegraph, the phonograph, the development of a commercially practical incandescent lamp, the development of a complete system of electric lighting, including dynamos, regulating devices, underground system protective devices and meters. In 1910, to Alfred Noble for notable achievements as a civil engineer. In 1911, to Sir William H. White for notable achievements in naval architecture. In 1912, to Robert W. In May, 1850, the first gold from the Comstock lode was discovered in the sands near the Carson river. It had been washed down by natural agencies, through Gold Caflon, from the decomposed rock of the ledge above. Within a few weeks, the precious metal was traced more than three miles in shallow deposits along the bed of the canon, from the river to the Devil's Gate-—a narrow, rocky cleft, notable to the teamsters of a later day chiefly as the place where " Uncle Jimmy Fair" collected high tolls, and could not reduce the rates, because " this was all he had for the education of his poor children." From 1850 to 1857, a fluctuating band of miners, whose number varied from twenty to two hundred, washed the Gold Canon placers with rockers and long-toms, making four to five dollars a day each until the last-named year, when the deposits were in great measure exhausted. The chief settlement of these miners was at Johntown. During only a third of the year was the water-supply sufficient for their work. The remainder of the time they utilized in desultory prospecting of the hills and in occasional forays for supplies among the Mormons in Carson valley. In 1857, the Grosch brothers discovered the Comstock lode at some point, now unknown, in Gold Hill, but their discovery perished with them. Early in 1858, the " Pioneer Quartz Company," having located several of the small surface-veins around Silver City (whose connection with the main lode has never been definitely shown), built an arrastra, and worked some of their ore; but the returns were so small that they soon abandoned this business. INTRODUCTION The principal object of this paper is to present data on the development of the revolving convex round table as a concentrator for the through 0.07-mm. slimes from the ores of the Butte district, although same brief notes on the earliest recorded use of this type of concentrating table in the ore-dressing plants of the Lake Superior region and of the Butte district are also presented. The revolving convex round table belongs to the class of concentrating tables known as film-sizing tables, these tables using the relative transporting power of a film, or thin sheet of water, as it flows over a quiet inclined surface, to separate the minerals of a sorted product.

A new instrument for measuring bulk and grain vol-urnes is described, and compared in accuracy with two modifications of Nutting's method, All three methods are reasonably fast, and in all three the probable error in the determinations of bulk volume can be kept down to about 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION The new pycnometer described in this paper is designed to give speed without sacrificing accuracy. Some time ago Russell1 described a somewhat similar appa-ratus; however, the instrument described in the present paper is more accurate. Nutting' designed the pycnom-eter shown in Fig. 1 (A and B), and Pirson3 has shown points like those of Fig. 1-D. The procedure described in this paper for using Nutting's pycnometer has been modified from that used by Nutting. CHOICE OF LIQUIDS The best liquids for measuring grain volumes are hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons which evaporate slowly. Trimethylbenzene or mesitylene, triethylben-zene, carbon tetrachloride, and tertalin have been used for this purpose. Any of these liquids or mercury may be used for measuring bulk volume. PREVENTING ERRORS DUE TO INVASION OF LIQUID Errors due to the invasion of the porous, permeable bulk samples by the liquid of measurement may be prevented or greatly reduced by using mercury, by applying an impervious coating, or by soaking the bulk samples in the liquid of measurement until bubbles cease issuing from them. Errors are produced only by the invasion of the samples which occurs between movement when the samples are weighed in air and the moment the weight of liquid displaced by the sample in the pycnometer is determined. No error is produced by varying degrees of filling of the pore space of the samples by the liquid of measurement. The excess liquid should be wiped from the samples immediately before the weight in air W1, is determined, and they should be placed in the pycnometers immediately. OPERATION OF NEW INSTRUMENT The new pycnometer is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of two glass parts which fit together at a ground glass joint. The spaces J and D are connected by fine glass tubes E, and the space J must be larger than the space D by at least the volume of the largest sample to be tested. The projections H afford a grip for twisting when the two parts tend to stick together. The position of the sample in mercury is shown by I, and in other liquids by M.
