The purpose of a mineral comminution circuit with a ball mill running in closed-loop with a hydrocyclone classification cluster is to feed the downstream process with the target particle size. Maintaining the optimal particle size in the flotation feed can significantly improve plant cash flow. In particular, reducing the amount of coarse material is often a major challenge. Existing instrumentation to provide particle size measurement is considered standard equipment in most modern concentrator plants. However, availability is often very low, mainly owing to high maintenance requirements of the analyser and associated sampling system.CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed two novel and robust technologies that address this challenge by providing high reliability and very low maintenance systems for on-line measurement of coarse material in the overflow of individual hydrocyclones. The first system is non-invasive and measures pebbles and rocks greater than 6 mm. This paper focuses on the second system, which is a ruggedized wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter, such as percentage above 150 micron.Both systems have simple robust designs and measure in the primary overflow stream of the individual hydrocyclone. Individual hydrocyclone measurement enables identification of poor performing hydrocyclones in addition to providing a representative measurement of the whole hydrocyclone cluster. The systems do not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping circuits that are prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements.The wetted sensor will be described in detail along with its implementation in a robust control scheme in a major copper concentrator in North America. Burning coal-mine refuse banks were surveyed in 15 States. The following characteristics were tabulated for 495 hanks: County; name, population, and distance of nearest town; size and status of bank; status and stage of fire; and topography. Ways of controlling fires were reviewed, the compacting and sealing method proving most satisfactory. Means for preventing refuse-bank fires by proper construction of banks are described.

In 2006, McNally International Inc., in a joint venture partner-ship with Aecon Constructors, was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: the Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers and the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS) Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue, both in the Toronto area. These projects comprised a total of 13 km (8 miles) of 2.74 m (9 ft) finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the YDSS. Both contracts required the use of earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) with a precast concrete segmental liner.

Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty. A demonstration of dozer blades, designed for recontouring area-mined spoil and shown effective at Kansas and East Texas surface mine sites, was conducted at a Northeast Arizona surface coal mine to determine their effectiveness in different climate and soil conditions. The specialized tools were: 48-ft angle blade (on side-by-side tractor), 24-ft grading bar, modified 24-ft "U" blade (on side-by-side tractor), and a 13-ft deep "U" blade. Interest in the increased dirt-handling capacity of a previously built 22-ft blade, resulted in the design of a new Centerflow Blade of good versatility, able to maintain increased flow in otherwise difficult-to-move spoil. The demonstration involved 263 acres and showed a reduction of 50% in reclamation costs and 20% in fuel requirements for this mine site over conventional equipment. This savings resulted from improved technology, trained operators, and rigorous application of supervisory and monitoring techniques. Procedures and results of the demonstration are presented and analyzed here, along with guidelines for application of findings.

Mining operations have made tremendous strides in improving the safety of blasting as shown by the significant and continual decrease in fatalities and serious injuries. Advances in blasting technology and blasting practices have played a significant role in reducing fatalities and injuries. However, even with the decline of fatalities and injuries blast area security continues to be by far the leading factor in blasting accidents. Even though there continues to be an increase in the use of industrial explosives and blasting agents in the U.S.A., the decline in fatalities and injuries from blasting accidents has persisted.

"The mining industry is on an ever accelerating path to complete mechanization. As companiesutilize more sophisticated and efficient methods of blasting, a more thorough look should begiven to the pros and cons of mechanized shaft sinking. Historically, Vertical Shaft SinkingMachines (VSSM) have been capital intensive, making it hard to enter lowest bidder marketssuch as the United States. As advances in safety and technology have occurred, VSSM methodsare becoming increasingly common in many countries outside the United States. Decreasedcapital requirements, a greater amount of competition within the VSSM market along withgreatly improved safety practices, have made it more competitive with traditional drill and blast(D&B) methods. However, VSSM technology has yet to be embraced by the United States. Alarge culture shift will have to occur before VSSM technology will become common in theUnited States. The history, and advent, of raised boring machines will be discussed and how itrelates to the current development of VSSM technology. The researchers will analyze the uniquerisks of D&B methods and how they compare with the unique risks of VSSM technology. Theresearchers will put an emphasis on risks directly affecting the safety of personnel working onthe shaft sinking operation. Many of these risks are identified by contracting companies withregards to geology, relative location of resources and the chosen shaft sinking method. Theresearchers will discuss specific risks a given shaft sinking company will want to consider whenchoosing between D&B and VSSM methods."

Finsch Mine is a kimberlite diamond mine located at Lime Acres in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine was founded in 1961 and started surface mining in 1964. Underground production commenced in 1990 using a modified blast-hole open stoping method for the mining of Blocks 1, 2 and 3. Block 4 is currently being mined as a block cave. The process of identifying and optimizing a method to mine the Block 5 orebody started in 1991, and in 2006 incline caving was identified as being technically feasible. This paper aims to document the process employed in developing this method by the Block 5 prefeasibility team as well as discuss the technical challenges encountered during this process. The paper commences with a history of Finsch Mine and highlights the complex geology and threat of sidewall failure that prompted the decision to use block caving as the mining method for Block 4. A literature study of mines that implemented mining methods upon which the incline cave was conceptualized is then presented. These practices were then used to form the basis for the designs on which the initial geotechnical modelling was done and built upon through an iterative process of modelling and design changes. The ventilation of the mining area, initial productivity simulation results, and the applicability of automation and comminution processes in the incline cave are also presented. The paper concludes with an investigation into some of the challenges of the mining method, and shows that that incline caving is a technical option available for further investigation in determining the optimal mining method to be employed at Block 5, Finsch Diamond Mine. The investment decision making process in the insurance and finance industries is affected by new advances such as simulation techniques. These advances have improved the discounted cash flow method (DCF). In DCF, a dynamic and flexible model construction is not possible because it does not consider uncertain conditions. Each project should be evaluated taking into account the related uncertainties because the related uncertainties determine the characterization of the project. Related uncertainties can be processed in dynamic DCF, which is applicable to both financial and non-financial industries with different kind of uncertainties, such as power generation and petroleum projects. The dynamic DCF method can estimate net present value (NPV) while managing related project uncertainties with a simulation method like Monte Carlo Simulation. The simulation method is preferred because its output is unbiased. Therefore, a more realistic financial evaluation of the project can be concluded. In spite of the improvement of dynamic DCF, this project evaluation method is not used frequently in mining industry. However, the mining industry is ideally suited to this concept because it is highly dependent on estimations such as orebody size and ore grade. During the project evaluation stage, these uncertainties can be included with the dynamic DCF method. This study aims to contribute to increasing the usage of this method in mining projects. A copper reserve in Turkey is selected as a case study to apply uncertainty assessment for the evaluation of NPV.

The phenomena of nature cannot present themselves to any thinking wild without claiming from it some solution. The earth, as it has often been observed, is laid out like a well ordered cabinet, presenting to us, in measure, some means of judging how the laws of nature and the essential properties of matter have worked out all we see before us. "That there have been depositions of strata gradually laid down aud stocked with the remains of the living objects, vegetable and animal, that flourished when they were being imposed, is an universally acknowledged fact. It speaks of a constantly maintained series of operations whereby the globe has been brought to its present condition, and which are ever advancing it to stages that are still before it. That immeasurable ages have been consumed in effecting these developments is also conceded. We witness the very graduated rate of the existing advances and can see that the past action must have been conducted in the same slow deliberate manner. There are many questions, however, upon which inquirers are not agreed, hence they are still within the domains of fair discussion.What has led to those great climatic changes whereby the same portions of the earth have had at various times climates that were glacial, temperate, and tropical? What causes the constant contortions and dislocations of strata and the upheaval and depression of land levels, and that there is a tendency to alternation in the parallel areas undergoing opposite kinds of movement as if the sinking of one area balanced the rIsing of another? What is the reason that the centres of volcanic action are continually shifting, and that the line of greatest activity is always upon the rising areas? That portions of the earth have been subjected to intense alid long continued volcanic action, and again to long periods of repose, and that the periods of activity and repose are·recurrent at long intervals of time? What the mountain chains of the world are in broadly parallel bands? What has caused the stratified rocks to be tilted from their original?

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation exploiting a diluted reserve of 131 million tonnes grading 1.06 per cent copper and 0.81 g/t gold in the lower portion of the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). The EESS is a calcium-magnesium silicate skarn containing in excess of 250 million tonnes of copper-gold ore, located in the Ertsberg Mining District on the crest of the Jawawijaya mountain range in the highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The EESS was discovered in 1968 where it cropped out at an elevation of 4050 metres above sea level. The Ertsberg Mining District is underlain by siliclastic carbonate and siltstone formations of Jurassic to Tertiary age. The sediments have been folded and are cut by major bedding subparallel and crosscutting structures. Intrusion of a series of igneous bodies post-dates folding and faulting. These I-type intrusions are the source for the copper-gold mineralisation found in the Ertsberg Mining District. The EESS is hosted by carbonates of the Tertiary Waripi and Faumai Formations that have been altered to calcium-magnesium silicate skarn and is situated on the southern limb of a northwest-trending syncline. The EESS is an essentially vertical tabular body with a vertical extent of at least 1200 metres and a lateral extent of up to 1000 metres. The width of the EESS averages 200 metres and locally is in excess of 300 metres. The northeast (hangingwall) contact of the EESS is a skarn reaction front in sudden contact with barren marbles. This contact coincides with a zone of localised faulting and brecciation. The EESS is bounded to the southwest (footwall) by the Ertsberg Diorite, a 3.25 Ma old intrusive. The DOZ block cave operation extends from 3040 metres above sea level to a maximum of 3388 metres above sea level, has a length of 860 metres and a maximum width of 350 metres. The DOZ is a high temperature skarn with a prograde forsterite/diopside mineralogy whose protolith is the dolomitic Tertiary Waripi Formation. The principal retrograde alteration minerals include tremolite, actinolite, serpentine, talc and chlorite. Grade is highest where bornite occurs in large dense complex intergrowths with magnetite and anhydrite. Grade has been locally enhanced in the DOZ by a late-stage pyrite-chalcopyrite hydrothermal alteration event with associated brecciation. Ertsberg Diorite along the footwall of the skarn is also included in the reserve where it is mineralised endoskarn or has been mineralised by porphyrytic or late stage hydrothermal alteration. Formation of the EESS was initiated by contact metamorphism during the intrusion of the Ertsberg Diorite with later metasomatic alteration during both prograde and retrograde phases. The bulk of sulphide mineralisation formed late in the retrograde phase. The EESS is open along strike to the northwest and down-dip with on-going exploration of these areas. Current exploration is targeting both endoskarn and porphyry style alteration and mineralisation of the Ertsberg Diorite.

The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99· 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

Cansiderable time and effort frequently are expended to establish, with a degree of confidence, the PVT behavior of pure substances. In particular, a great deal of experimental information contributed by a number of investigators is available in the literature. The data of each investigator, although significant in themselves, cannot be used with a high degree of confidence until they are compared with the continuum of information presented by others. Current interest in thermodynamic and transport properties, for not only the gaseous state but the con-densed state as well, requires that PVT infarmation be presented for both regions. The density dependence on temperature and pressure, when presented as a continuum, is of considerable value in itself, especially since the available equations of state fail to properly account for the PVT behavior in the condensed state. For this reason and to incorporate PVT data recently presented in the literature, this investigation was carried out. In their studies concerned with the thermodynamic properties of methane, Matthews and Hurd in 1946 utilized the data of Kvalnes and Gaddy and Olds, Reamer, Sage and Lacey to establish the PVT behavim of methane in the superheated region and the saturated liquid densities of Keyes, Taylor and Smithl in conjunction with the Clapeyron equation to develop the densities for the saturated envelope. Current activity sponsored by API Project No. 44 under the direction of F. D. Rossini has led to a tabular presentation of compressibility factors for gaseous methane in the superheated region.la These values were obtained by using smoothed residuals, developed from experimental data and the Ben edict-Webb-Rubin equation,' to establish internally consistent compressibility factors for the real gas. This approach offers probably the most precise presentation of PVT information for gaseous methane to date. The PVT behavior of methane also can be represented accurately by equations of state such as the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation or the Martin-Hoa equation.' These equations, although valuable for analytically representing the PVT behavior, lack precision in the compressed-liquid region. The PVT data available in the literature for methane were utilized to obtain reduced densities that are presented in Figs. 1 and 2 as functions of reduced temperature with parameters of reduced pressure. The critical constants utilized for methane are those reported by Kobe and Lynn." These critical values, T, = 191.1°K, PC = 45.8 atm and p, = 0.162 gm/cc, produce a critical compressibility factor, z, = 0.289. A comprehensive instrumentation program was implemented at the Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island, NY during proximate underwater rock blasting in 2014. Forty-two blasts took place over a 4-week period to deepen the 1200-ft (366 m) Berth 3 from -45 ft (-14 m) to -50 ft (-15 m) MLW to accommodate Post-Panamax vessels. Approximately 86,000 yd3 (65,752 m3) were blasted 120 to 9 ft (37 to 2.7 m) from the wharf to a total depth of -57 ft (-17.4 m). Pre-blast planning included developing and implementing a comprehensive monitoring plan and setting vibration and strain limits to protect the wharf. The plan outlined methods to measure vibrations on five corners of four concrete deck sections, on five concrete-filled pipe piles just below the pile cap near deck corners, and in bedrock adjacent to pile sockets. Water overpressures were measured near instrumented piles for 19 blasts closest to the wharf. A total of 19 geophones were secured to the wharf structure and buried 12 ft (3.7 m) in drilled holes.

Increasing depths and mechanization of underground mines have led to the production of large amounts of gaseous and particulate contaminants. Over 100 000 lives have been lost due to methane gas and dust explosions in coal mine workings in both the United States and Canada since 1900. There is, therefore, the need to constantly assess and evaluate the performance of existing mine ventilation systems to maintain safe and acceptable mine environmental conditions. This paper advances research initiatives in the control of methane gas in underground mine environments. It uses the results of continuous monitoring of methane gas concentrations conducted in selected coal mines in North America to assess the effectiveness of existing auxiliary ventilation systems to control methane gas concentrations. The results show that the average quantities of fresh air required to dilute, disperse and remove methane gas concentrations within set levels of one minute varied from 5.43 m3/sec. to 27.97 m3/sec. in the development headings. The average dilution times in the headings studied were less than eight minutes. The calculated dilution efficiencies of the auxiliary ventilation systems in the headings varied from 12% to 139%. These efficiencies ranged from poor to excellent. This implies that the auxiliary ventilation systems were capable of controlling the methane gas concentrations below statutory levels but may not be able to cope with large and unusual methane gas concentrations in the headings. This study is significant in the control of methane gas and coal dust explosions in coal mines.

"Abstract The Deep Mixing Methods (DMM), in their current forms, have been employed in the United States since 1986, although an earlier version had seen service from 1954. The earlier developments were strongly influenced by practices in the Nordic countries and Japan, while by the late 1980’s several DMM systems had been developed in the U.S. itself. Since then, DMM has continued its evolution, principally via the challenges of a series of large, landmark projects, but also via distinct, significant technological advances. This paper highlights the key points in the history of DMM in the U.S., and provides an overview of the different methods currently in use.In the BeginningIt is a common misconception that the history of applications of the Deep Mixing Methods (DMM) in the United States dates from 1986 when SMW Seiko Inc. — a subsidiary of Japan’s Seiko Kogyo Company — was established in the Bay Area. However, the author believes that Intrusion Prepakt Co.’s patented MIP (Mixed in Place) system had been used, albeit sporadically (about 30 projects are recorded), since 1954 (FHWA 2000, 2001). Ironically, by 1961 this single auger method had been extensively used under license in Japan for excavation support and groundwater control — by the Seiko Kogyo Company. By 1972, the original MIP technique had been succeeded by more advanced Japanese methods, involving multiple augers. Intrusion Prepakt have long since become defunct.The first systematic studies of contemporary Deep Mixing Methods in Japan began in 1967 when the Port and Harbor Research Institute of the Ministry of Transportation began laboratory testing using granular and powdered lime for treating soft marine soils. Fundamental studies continued through the early 1970’s, by which time the development of industrial scale equipment was well advanced, having its first application on a marine trial near Haneda Airport. Coincidentally, laboratory and field research also began in 1967 in Sweden (“Swedish Lime Column Method”) for treating soft clays using unslaked lime. Reportedly the progenitor was a Norwegian, Kjeld Paus, who had made observations on fluid lime columns in the U.S. It would seem that developments in Japan and the Nordic countries proceeded independently until 1975 when the technology leaders from each group (Broms and Boman; and Okumura and Terashi, respectively) presented their — very similar — findings at a conference in Bangalore, India. Limited technical exchanges ensued thereafter.Whereas the Nordic developments continued to focus on the use of dry reagents (cement and lime) and relatively light equipment compatible with operating on and in very soft clays and organics, the Japanese progressed into the use of fluid reagents (cement-based grouts) and heavier equipment for both marine and land-based projects. Thus, by 1986, there were a large number of proprietary (wet and dry) DMM systems in Japan, and a rapidly growing market already by then accounting for over 12,000,000 m3 of ground treatment."

Slope monitoring has been an important issue in static terrestrial lidar for some time. Several solutions for monitoring the progress of a slide have been devised over the years. All of these solutions have required users to be in the field operating the lidar equipment. This paper presents a new system developed using the Optech ILRIS-HD or ILRIS-LR lidar and the scripting language of PolyWorks to produce an autonomous slope monitoring system. This system has proven invaluable in detecting and alerting mine workers to potential danger within their mine sites. It has already been deployed in two mine sites and is scheduled to be installed at a third.

In cement-based products, such as concrete and mortars, a balance between the particle sizes of the components must be kept in order to obtain the required material properties, such as workability and strength. Sometimes the aggregates lack the necessary amount of fines, hence fine particles, i.e., filler materials, have to be added. Large quantities of filler material are needed in the production of modern concrete types; one principle of self-compacting concrete (SCC) is, for instance, the use of large amounts of fillers to reduce the friction between the coarser aggregates. Use of by-products such as slag, dust or sludge from the metallurgical industries as filler materials in concrete may help to conserve natural resources and at the same time be an economically positive option. However, to be able to successfully use the available materials they must be suitable for the planned purpose, i.e., they must be compatible with cement. In this paper three different experimental studies of steel-slags will be discussed. The aim of the studies has been to investigate if it is possible to improve the steel-slags properties, by selective screening, fine wet grinding or remelting, so that the steel-slags can be used as mineral-addition/filler material in concrete. An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.
