All industrial processes are economically driven, resulting in the ever increasing need for process optimization in order to stay competitive and profitable. Numerous models has been published depicting the optimization of the raw material usage in an arc furnace, as well as the thermal and electrical efficiency; however, to obtain a holistic view of the cost-effectiveness of the process one needs to expand the model to include the cost of all the operational variables. This project therefore aimed to not only include the raw material feeds and power consumption as input variables, but also the labour, maintenance, and environmental costs to generate an all-inclusive financial balance. In the end, the model was able to mathematically optimize the ferrochrome (FeCr) production process through evaluating the effect of a specified combination of input parameters. It could therefore be used as a tool to aid in managerial decision-making; to appraise and correspondingly adjust certain operational variables in order to achieve a maximum return on investment. This paper fully describes the reasoning behind the choice of the essential model components, the assumptions made during the models development, the calculation approach, as well as the advantages, limitations, possible applications, and areas for expansion of the final model. Through running simulations with plant data, it was found that the accuracy of final model remained fairly constant when applied to stable furnace conditions, but was met with a number of limitations when applied to more complex situations. These limitations could, however, be overcome through further development and expansion of the existing model to include a larger number of process variables.

February 2, 1999 marks a milestone in earth-moving technology at the San Miguel Lignite Mine. It was on that date that The North American Coal Corporation (NAC) took delivery of three Leica Dozer 2000 GPS grade control systems for use on its bulldozers. The primary reason for the purchase of these grade control systems was to prove that GPS technology could safely and economically be utilized on heavy equipment to assist operators in defining grades. If these properties were successfully demonstrated, the ultimate vision of the project was to expand the system to a point were GPS would become the primary means of providing grade control information to the mine’s heavy equipment operators. Twenty nine months and more than $500,000 later this vision was realized when the final bulldozer operating at the San Miguel Lignite Mine was equipped with Dozer 2000. Presently North American Coal has a total of nine Dozer 2000 GPS grade control systems at San Miguel providing cut and fill information to operators 24 hours a day. These grade control systems have allowed the San Miguel operation to increase safety, reduce costs, improve operator attitude, and better ensure environmental compliance. This article discusses both the nature of these benefits and some of the issues that had to be dealt with along the way.

The Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is an extensive low angle semibrittle mineralised structure in the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand. The shear zone is located on the lower limb of a late metamorphic recumbent fold. Structural observations suggests that the shear zone initiated as a high strain mylonite zone and transgressed the ductile/brittle boundary (D4) later in its development. A surge zone at Round Hill is bounded to the south by a NE-SW striking lateral ramp which displaces the hanging wall shear (HWS) by 50 m. Oblique strike slip displacement during surge zone propagation created space for deposition of the sheeted vein complex or stockwork. Quartz recrystallisation in stockwork veins suggests that the veins were deformed in a ductile manner and implies that surge zone propagation may have occurred during late D3 deformation. A macroantiform was produced during D3/D4 shortening below the HWS. Over tightening of the antiform hinge created SW and NE-dipping ramp thrusts. Continued strike slip displacement along the lateral ramp rotated the antiform and associated ramps into a south plunging drag fold. Post-mineralisation (D5) structures include NE-dipping nonna! faults below the HWS and SW-dipping low angle imbricate thrusts above the HWS. The development of these structures was kinematically compatible with normal movement on the HMSZ and is related to mid Cretaceous break up of Gondwanaland in the SW Pacific.

Computer applications are ideally suited to the day to day operations of grade control and short term planning on a mine site. By refining this part of the operation there is scope to increase profits by more accurately predicting ore grade and tonnage, and allowing the mining engineer more flexibility in his approach to scheduling. Large numbers of blasthole or ditchwitch samples need to be processed in a fast and efficient manner, and stored in a database for future reference. The mining engineer has to calculate tonnages and subdivide the blast or digging area into mineable areas of waste, low and high grade ore. New grade and tonnage information must be used by the mining engineer to update his short term plan. Answers must be obtained quickly and efficiently, but a high level of individual input is necessary in order that maximum use is made of the information. Geostatistical analysis of samples can be used to refine the interpolation techniques. Reconciliation between the original grade model, the newly sampled area, and the final product should be monitored continually.

Different ore types result from the irregular spatial distribution of the associated alkaline/carbonatite rocks and the zoned alteration profile within which apatite may have undergone reprecipitation. Different flotation responses are caused by their mineralogy, iron oxide impregnation and grain-size characteristics. Samples from seven deposits were crushed, screened and separated before being studied by chemical analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy. Two main apatite varieties with peculiar crystal morphology were identified: hydroxy-fluorapatite as the primary phase and carbonate-fluorapatite as the reprecipitated phase. The former occurs as prismatic or ovoid grains and the latter as polycrystalline aggregates or crusts on the primary grains; both are associated with iron oxide coatings (primary) or intergrowths (secondary). Microflotation tests showed variations in flotability for particular apatite associations as well as intensity of iron oxide coatings. The differences in flotation behaviour can be related to morphological properties and chemical substitution in the apatite structure

The Liberty Bridge in Greenville, South Carolina is a curved, cable-stayed, pedestrian bridge with primary support provided by two towers. The bridge is part of the Falls Park redevelopment. The bridge was originally designed to be supported on drilled piers. Alternately, the bridge was supported on a combination of micropiles and anchor piles because of difficult access and subsurface conditions. The use of micropiles and anchor piles led to improved construction scheduling and reduced costs. Micropiles were used to resist compressive loads. Anchor piles were used to resist tensile forces and to eliminate excessive settlement of pile caps into underlying fill during pre-stressing. This paper describes the site history, bridge construction, site and subsurface conditions encountered, and the decisions that led to support of the bridge using micropiles and anchor piles and foundation construction.

"Schaft Creek is a calc-alkaline porphyry Cu-Mo-(Au) deposit located in northwestern British Columbia. The deposit formed in a volcanic arc setting, likely on a back-arc rifted continental fragment. It is hosted by Late Triassic basaltic to andesitic volcanic rocks of the Stuhini Group (Stikine Terrane), and is associated with porphyritic granodiorite dikes emanating from the nearby Hickman batholith. The age of the Hickman batholith is approximately constrained here by a composite U-Pb zircon date of 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, which is in broad agreement with a well-constrained age for mineralization at Schaft Creek of 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os molybdenite). The deposit is in most respects typical of calc-alkaline porphyry systems, but displays silica-poor sericite-chlorite alteration in mafic country rocks in place of classic phyllic altera¬tion. The deposit comprises three distinct, but related, zones: the northern Paramount zone, the Main zone, and the West Breccia zone. Two phases of mineralization are observed. The first phase occurs as hydro-thermal veins and breccias, and minor disseminations. It consists of bornite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and pyrite with potassic and sericite-chlorite alteration. The second phase is minor and consists of veins of molybdenite ± specularite, as well as Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide veins without any significant corresponding alteration. Extensive structural modification has affected the deposit both during and after its formation.Schaft Creek est un gîte porphyrique de Cu-Mo-(Au) calco-alkalin situé dans le nord-ouest de la Colombie Britannique. Ce gîte s’est formé dans environnement d’arc volcanique, probablement situé sur un fragment continental bordé par un bassin d’arrière-arc. La première phase se présente sous forme de veines et de brèches hydrothermales ainsi qu’en disséminations mineures et consiste en bornite, en chalcopyrite, en molybdénite et en pyrite avec une altération potassique et en séricite-chlorite. La seconde phase est mineure et consiste en veines de molybdénite ± spécularite ainsi qu’en veines de sulfures de Cu-Pb-Zn sans association à une altération particulière. This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

The maximum current density at which conventional copper electrowinning plants will result in satisfactory, adherent, and dendrite·free cathodes is determined by the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. A decrease in the value of that thickness will permit an increase in the current density. This fact is utilized to develop a high current density cell in which the reduction of the boundary layer thickness is accomplished by means of a specially designed electrolyte circulation system. The high current density cell is used to determine the effect of current density on such process parameters as current efficiency, cell voltage, power consumption, and cathode purity. A number of empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the magnitude of these effects.

The term slag has been used to define a wide variety of material including mine spoil and slag produced at steel plants. The present paper is concerned only with the non-metallic alumino-silicates developed simultaneously with iron in blast furnaces.The control of iron quality by slag has long been appreciated but here aspects of slag control based on concurrent iron production are indicated. Consideration is given to the basic composition of slags relative to the type of allotrope required. Up to a point, the plant conditions, under which a particular slag type is processed, have some effect, but these conditions only widen the range of a given allotrope.They do not convert one slag type into another. The nature of the slag types and experiments with additives to convert one slag type into another are discussed.The various uses for allotropes of blast furnace slag are considered.Their use in air cooled slag, foamed slag, slag wool, cements, soil stabilization, glass bottles, and building bricks and blocks, is explored in some detail.INTRODUCTIONWithin recent memory, blast furnace practice has been solely concerned with the production of iron. The slag make at this time had not reached embarrassing proportions. In Britain, unlike Germany, no legislation existed to prevent the growth of unsightly slag banks. Generally slag found limited use as fill and road material in the immediate plant vicinity. This is broadly the case in Australia today. In Europe and America, where the slag make is of the order of several million tons annually, the room problem and the cost of dumping slag has stimulated commercial and scientific research on the disposal problem. Currently, most iron plants in Europe can profitably dispose of at least 95 per cent of their slag make.

The trend in gas well testing has been to rely more on the early-time flow data of drawdown and buildup tests than on stabilized flow tests. The stabilized testing methods often are not adequate for complicated modern gas reservoirs because many of these reservoirs have extremely low permeabilities and the transient flow period of a well test can last for days or weeks. It has become common to augment the flow capacity of gas wells by hydraulically fracturing their producing formations. In deep reservoirs the induced fractures are generally vertical and tend to follow a single plane of weakness. The presence of a vertical fracture at the wellbore complicates the transient flow behavior of a low permeability gas well. The flow is further complicated when turbulence occurs near the wellbore. Russell and Truittl published transient drawdown solutions for vertically-fractured liquid wells. They developed methods of drawdown and buildup testing utilizing these solutions, which were based on numerical simulation. Clark2 applied the basic Russell-Truitt solutions to analyze fractured water injection wells by falloff tests. Field examples were given to substantiate the method of analysis. The Russell-Truitt solutions and well testing methods can be extended to gas well flow. Millheim and Cichowicz3 presented the drawdown equations for *Now with Scientific Software Corp., Denver. ideal gas flow, including the effects of formation damage and turbulence. Two actual field cases were presented, both of which exhibited extensive fractures and turbulent flow. For the pressure range of these well tests, the use of ideal gas equations was acceptable. These field cases were significant in being the first published data showing the occurrence of turbulence in fractured gas wells. We, also, observed such cases in practice. Our purpose here is to extend the theory of fractured gas well testing to the flow of real gases. To determine the effects of wellbore storage and turbulence on well test interpretation, we developed a finite-difference model to simulate well test conditions. Since gas wells usually are widely spaced and have high compressibility, the emphasis has been put on the early transient behavior before the effects of the outer boundary are noticeable at the wellbore. The Mathematical Model The geometry of our mathematical model is similar to that used by Prats.4 The well is centered in a circular uniform reservoir. A vertical fracture of infinite flow capacity penetrates the formation and passes through the wellbore. The wellbore itself is not important. Fig. 1 shows a sketch of the problem. Conditioning of flotation feed is an important prerequisite for efficient flotation. This process depends on parameters such as conditioning time, slurry concentration and slurry pH. The objective of this paper is to optimize the conditioning process for the flotation feed. This was achieved by first conducting preliminary experiments at constant slurry pH to determine the significant ranges of slurry concentration and conditioning time. Then, factorial experimental design (32 experiments) was used to investigate the significance of the above parameters and their interactions on flotation recovery and grade. Statistical analyses using ANOVA approach showed that flotation recovery (R) and concentrate grade (g) were affected by feed conditioning. It was found that concentrate grade was linearly proportional to the slurry concentration and conditioning time, while flotation recovery was exponentially proportional to the conditioning parameters. A contour plot of the flotation response (recovery and grade) against conditioning parameters showed that the optimum operating parameters for flotation feed conditioning was a conditioning time of 1.5 to 2 minutes and a slurry conentration of 55% to 60%.

The graphitic carbon content of soils may be used to detect and delimit subsurface graphitic zones. Spectrographic measurement of carbon in C horizon soils from several areas in the northeastern United States shows good correlation with known graphitic bodies. Bodies of graphite and sulfides are readily located by electromagnetic prospecting methods, but these methods cannot generally discriminate between them. Usual practice, therefore, requires follow-up work on electrically anomalous areas by trenching, drilling, or soil sampling in order to determine the mineralogical nature of the conductor. The efficiency and cost of such follow-up is consequently an important factor in prospecting. The presence of buried sulfide deposits is often reflected in concentrations of metals in the superincumbent soil. Simple chemical tests for such metal concentrations have been developed and applied with considerable success. Bodies of graphite or mixtures of graphite and sulfides are, however, very common and a means whereby buried graphite could be detected by soil testing should provide valuable additional information in the search for ore sulfide and graphite deposits. Graphite is a notably stable substance and should persist in soil above graphite-rich horizons. Microscopic examination of soil samples high in carbon, however, failed to reveal any recognizable graphite fragments indicating a grain size in the clay range. Presumably such small particles would have some mobility in a soil by a translocation mechanism similar to that proposed for the movement of clay particles in a soil profile. Experimental data supports this idea since the boundary between background and anomalous soils carbon values is quite sharp, but the anomalous zone is slightly broader than the graphitic source rock. A simple spectrochemical technique for the determination of carbon in geological materials has been described by Dennen,1 and may be directly applied to soils. A modification of this technique which employs an arcing chamber through which nitrogen is passed is recommended to decrease contributions from atmospheric carbon dioxide. Tests indicate that soils over graphitic zones may be strongly enriched in carbon. The spectrochemical determination of carbon depends upon the formation of the cyanogen molecule (CN) from carbon in a sample and atmospheric nitrogen, under the high temperatures associated with a dc arc. Samples for analysis are dried, lumps broken, and screened. A small portion of the -100 mesh fraction is packed into a copper electrode and excited as the cathode of a dc arc. The band spectra of cyanogen are recorded photographically and the density of the bandhead CN 3883A is measured. The limit of detection of the method is about 0.01 pct C and its coefficient of variation is about 15 pct. Soils, of course, contain carbon in other forms than graphite, and the amount of interference from such sources was examined. The C horizon of several soils from Massachusetts, Maine, and Pennsylvania were found to have a carbon content of 0.3 to 0.5 pct by weight. South Africa (SA), a country in which all three commercially important asbestos minerals have been mined and milled, has retained proven cases of mesothelioma linked with environmental exposure to asbestos. This study illustrates the importance of fiber type in the occurrence of environmental mesothelioma. Four studies have reviewed the source of occupational or environmental asbestos exposure in 504 histologically proven cases of mesothelioma in South Africa. One hundred and eighteen cases (23%) were thought to be related to environmental exposure to asbestos. In the vast majority of these cases, exposure was linked to crocidolite mining activities in the Northern Cape Province. Two cases were thought to have occurred in relation to amosite and Transvaal crocidolite exposure in the Limpopo Province. In the balance of cases there was some uncertainty. No cases were reported with exposure to South African chrysotile. Consequently, in the vast majority of cases of mesothelioma, environmental exposure to asbestos occurred in the Northern Cape Province, in proximity to mines, mills and dumps where crocidolite was processed. Crocidolite appears to be far more mesotheliomagenic than amosite, and chrysotile has not been implicated in the disease. "INTRODUCTION The Warrior View mine of the Seaboard Coal Corporation is located in Tuscaloosa County on the Warrior River about 14 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Brookwood bed at this point yields a coal with fair coking qualities, and the product from neighboring mines on this bed has been used for the manufacture of blast furnace coke. The output of the Warrior View mine, however, is used exclusively for domestic and steam-raising purposes.This paper continues the series° of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which are based upon the study of coal preparation in Alabama now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal mining companies. This paper contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of run-of-mine coal, and flakiness and crushing tests on certain sizes.Published information on the Brookwood bed is very meager. Fieldner6 gives the proximate and ultimate analyses for a number of seam samples taken from representative mines working this bed. Gandrud and Britton7 show sections of this bed taken at Searles, Ala. They also give the specific gravities of the coal, the bone, and the shale partings.Table 1 give the proximate and ultimate analyses for the 3/4 to 3/16 inch size of raw coal. Table 2 gives the sulphur content and the ash fusibility temperatures of the float-and-sink fractions for this same size. The character of the coal is very uniform throughout the range of sizes produced and, as it was not convenient to have these analyses on all sizes, this size was chosen as being representative of the coal. From the information available it is evident that the coal preparation problem is restricted to one of ash reduction.SAMPLING AT THE MINEAt the Warrior View mine the run-of-mine coal is dumped from the mine cars upon a 3-inch grizzly. The oversize is crushed in rolls set at 24 inches and joins the undersize before being elevated to the raw-coal bin ahead of the jig. The sample was caught at the point where elevates discharges into the raw-coal bin, by taking a proportional amount of the coal at 10-minute intervals over the period of a day's run, The total sample amounting to 2.7 tons was shipped to the laboratory at Tuscaloosa for the washability studies."

The Bureau of Mines, at the request of local authorities in Rock Springs, Wyo., investigated and conducted through contracts a multistage program of exploratory drilling and pumped-slurry backfilling of 15 areas of potential subsidence in abandoned mine workings underneath that community. Initially, the Bureau in 1969 had recommended a program of gravity blind flushing of some of the inaccessible mine voids, and in 1970 a new technique, the pumped-slurry injection process, was tested for the first time in a site adjacent to the city's area of severe surface subsidence. Success of this initial testing program, and of a large-scale project in Scranton, Pa., led to further large- scale projects, funded by Congress, that resulted in the successful back- filling not only of all 15 target areas of potential subsidence in Rock Springs, but also of several areas in other States. Total cost of the projects in Rock Springs, including the original pumped-slurry test, was $3,243,993. A total of about 923,000 tons of sand was injected hydraulically into mine voids, rendering 178 acres of residential and central-downtown areas of Rock Springs less susceptible to subsidence damage. The pumped-slurry method was proved to be much superior to the gravity blind flushing method in term of the amount of solids that could be injected underground through a single borehole. However, there are special conditions that make this technique more or less applicable in different areas or underground configurations, as noted in the report's conclusions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Cyprus Shoshone Coal Corp. conducted a study of deformation mechanisms in strata around a longwall gate road system at two sites in an underground coal mine near Ham, WY. Of particular interest was timedependent (on the order of several months) roof deformation. Strata above and below the coal seam are very weak, carbonaceous mudstones that have cohesionless planes of weakness oriented along bedding, which dips approximately 8° to 16° at N 49° E. An extensive array of instrumented roof bolts, roof extensometers, and biaxial stressmeters were installed during development mining at these two sites under variable depth of cover [I83 to 335 m (600 to 1,100 ft)], seam dip (10° to 16°), and top coal thickness [estimated to be 0.30 to 0.61 m (1 to 2 ft) on the downdip side of the entry]. Bolt load and roof deformation histories during the entry development periods were compared. Bolt loads at site 2 were less than those at site 1, which is consistent with the amount of overburden. Deformation magnitudes at site 2 were similar to those at site 1, but deformation rates were approximately 44% greater and nearly constant over time, whereas the deformation rates at site 1 decreased exponentially over time. Also, most deformation occurred above the bolt horizon at site two, but extensometer measurements at site 1 showed that a significant amount of deformation occurred within the bolt horizon. The most significant factor that influenced bolt tension and timedependent strata deformation was strength and Young's modulus of the strata. Finite-difference models support this conclusion.

The chemistry of sulfide roasting is analyzed to show those aspects of performance which Thecan be predicted from considerations of thermodynamic equilibrium. It is concluded that equilibrium calculations can serve as a yardstick for prediction of roaster-gas composition and sulfate formation in the calcine for fluid-bed roasting practice. A method of calculation which combines the equilibrium and stoichiometric factors is outlined, and illustrated by an example from the roasting of Cu-Fe sulfides. ON first examination the roasting of sulfides would not seem to be a process to which equilibrium calculations could be applied to yield results of practical value. The burning of sulfides is an ex-tremely spontaneous reaction, excess air is always used to obtain rapid reaction, and in most traditional roaster designs (hearth roasting) the temperature and gas composition vary widely from point to point in the roaster. These are all conditions which promote a non-equilibrium state in the roasting process. However, the introduction of the fluid-bed roaster1 has brought to roasting practice new conditions of operation, so that equilibrium calculations can be used to predict certain limited aspects of practical operation. The fluid bed is characterized by uniformity of temperature, gas composition, and calcine composition from point to point throughout the bed. These relatively uniform properties of the bed make the meaningful calculation of the equilibrium state of certain reactions in roasting possible. It is the purpose of this paper to analyze roasting from an equilibrium viewpoint, to show where the method may be expected to yield valuable information, where it fails, and to outline methods of calculation. Main Roasting Reaction The reaction MS (s) + 3/2 0, = MO (s) + SO, [I] might well be called the main roasting reaction. It adequately accounts for the well known facts that metal sulfide and air are the main reactants, and metal oxide and SO, the main products. Deviations from this simple stoichiometry will be discussed under side reactions. For all metal sulfides, Reaction 1 is strongly exothermic and the equilibrium position is far to the right. Since the reaction is exothermic, the equilibrium shifts in the right-to-left direction as the temperature is raised. However, at all practical roaster temperatures (between 500" and 1200°C), the amount of this shift is small, and the equilibrium position remains far to the right. The main roasting reaction is essentially irreversible, and the application of equilibrium considerations to this reaction will not be! a fruitful field of investigation. A knowledge of the rate of this reaction. although not the proper subject of this paper, is of great importance to the roasting process. Analysis of the factors which influence this rate shows that: 1) The rate will increase rapidly with increased temperature. 2) The rate will be proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen at the surface of the reacting particle. Because of diffusion effects, the partial pressure of oxygen at the particle surface may be considerably less than in the bulk of the roaster gas. For this reason, intimate contact between gas and solid and high relative velocity between gas and solid, such as can be obtained in a fluid bed or flash roaster, will markedly increase the rate of reaction. 3) The rate will be proportional to the surface area of metal sulfide. Therefore, smaller particle size will permit a more rapid rate per unit of weight. To achieve practical rates of roasting the partial pressure of oxygen in the roaster gases must be maintained at a finite level at all times. Even where the gas-solid contact is very good, as in the fluid-bed roaster, the oxygen content of the gas must not be allowed to drop below some limiting value (perhaps 1 pct), or the rate of the main roasting reaction will become too small for practical operation. This modern plant was installed with the object of treating all oxide ore and payable dump material by the cyanide process.The plant is located on a ridge on the eastern side of Linda Gully. The mill -site has a slope to the south of 1 in 4.The new plant is of steel and concrete construction and was specially designed to suit the climatic conditions which exist at Mount Morgan.THE COARSE CRUSHING PLANTThe ore received from the, mine is dumped into a 600-ton steel bin which is commanded by a 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway,The mine ore is conveyed by steam locomotives in rakes of five self-dumping 7-ton railroad cars. The dump material is mostly loaded by bull-dozers and conveyed to the binsin large motor lorries. Located on the top of the bin is a heavy railroad grizzly having 12-in openings through which all ore must pass.The flow of ore from this steel bin is controlled by a No. 7D 3-speed Ross chain feeder. It should be mentioned here that, although the bottom of the steel bin is inclined at an angle of 45°, it has been found, owing to the clayey nature of the oxide ore, that the live capacity of the bin is only about 50% of the total capacity.
