Because of the high economic value associated with small improvements in the operating performance of mineral processing plants, innovations in instrumentation, stabilization and expert control systems have been an ever-present part of the landscape in plants throughout the world since the I 960s. Expert control systems are computer programs that continuously monitor plant conditions; contain "expert knowledge" concerning the process, equipment and operational knowledge; and make timely recommendations for new process set points or even directly change the process set points to achieve desired management goals. Early rudimentary expert control systems first appeared in the early 1970s. They have grown from small, experimental but ambitious projects in which single unit operations were controlled to plant-wide systems that include technologies used in the U.S. space shuttle program. Experiences and results of applying these systems throughout the world will be explained discussed and analyzed. Typical results will be outlined and the use of expert control in the future will be projected.

Kaolin tailings ponds play an important role in reclamation of land and water. Discharges impounded from kaolin plants include oversize fractions consisting of coarse kaolin, mica, quartz as well as magnetically extracted contaminents, acid filtrates, and plant washdown streams. Tailing ponds perform an essential function in sedimentation of particulates, blending and reoxygenation of liquid waste, and neutralization and clarification of discharge water. During the past fifteen years, most kaolin firms have segregated their coarse filler waste to allow for possible reclamation for production of delaminated coating clay. This excess coarse filler fraction constitutes a reserve for future coating clay production.

A practical application of recent design concepts makes it possible to design a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. The design and operating parameters Of a column cell installation that replaced a conventional two stage copper flotation cleaning circuit at MAGMA COPPER COMPANY, SAN MANUEL, ARIZONA using these design concepts is described. A survey of other mineral processors using column cell technology was conducted. The results of this survey will also be discussed.

Research efforts are just beginning to identify the acoustic signatures of very short pulses of sound associated with the fracture of single particles in an autogenous mill. This presentation will discuss the anticipated correlation between these data and the fundamental mechanisms of rock fracture It is hoped that further tests will help identify what design and operating parameters influence the acoustic spectra, determine whether different minerals have different spectra and correlate product particle size distribution with acoustic spectra.

Separation of dolomite from apatite, because of nonselective adsorption, cannot be achieved by conventional froth flotation technique. Results obtained in the present study also indicate, that this can be attributed to the depletion of the collector molecules due to complexation with the calcium and magnesium ions, dissolved from the two minerals. However, it has been established in this investigation that conditioning the material at pH 10, followed by reconditioning, without any additional collector, at pH 4, results in selective flotation of dolomite from the mixture. The recovery of apatite, in the proposed reconditioning process, is much higher than with the conventional conditioning under similar pH conditions. The mechanisms involved in the conventional conditioning, and the reconditioning process are presented.

To the safety engineer, mine planning engineer, and mine inspector associated with an underground operation, stability of the underground structure is of the utmost importance. In the United States in 1961 rock falls killed 167 miners, crippled many more, and cost the industry a fortune in lost equipment and production. Much research has been carried on to try to find ways to eliminate this loss of life and property. Within the past few years the interest in rock mechanics as a science has been at its highest point, Private industry, government agencies, universities and foundations have launched studies to gain a better basic understanding of the stability of underground openings.

Neural networks are a generalized, multivariable non-linear modeling technique that can be used to model mineral processing operations. Neural networks will be described as will their use in modeling column flotation. Optimization of column flotation will be explored and discussed by using the neural network column models.

A significant wollastonite resource has been discovered and evaluated near Seeley's Bay in southeastern Ontario. The deposit occurs in Grenville Frontenac Terrane granulite facies rock within a calc-silicate skarn in contact with Proterozoic-age gabbro. The steeply-dipping and tightly-folded wollastonite skarn beds are interlayered with diopside and quartz-feldspar skarns in a southwest-plunging synclinorium. More than 9 million tonnes of a drill-proven and inferred resource grading 41 % wollastonite has been identified, as well as an additional 3 million tonnes grading 30%. Mineralogical and process test work with the wollastonite from this deposit has demonstrated the potential to produce a high purity, high aspect ratio wollastonite product.

Introduction Mine sampling determines the practicality of any mining operation. Improper sampling can result in an incorrect appraisal of present production and future potential. Therefore, the mine department in charge of ore-reserve calculations and mine sampling should be overseen by competent and experienced professionals with technical backgrounds qualifying them to produce accurate results. Sampling is a process by which portions of an ore body are collected and analyzed to estimate the average mineral content of the entire ore body. It is incorrect to assume that a large number of samples eliminates any errors in the sampling method. To obtain unbiased samples, proper sample location with respect to rock type and mineralization is just as important. The sampling procedure must yield correct results for the type of mineral deposit, and careful consideration should be given to whether or not the sampling technique has been developed to an extent sufficient to eliminate as much human error and bias as possible. Only after the ore has been mined and milled is the sampling accuracy known. Sampling also provides information about the bulk composition of the ore for mineralogical and metallurgical tests that determine the economic ore-waste boundaries and the geologic trends for exploration. Actual mining plans can be developed from this information to maximize profits. Accurate sampling is critical, and thus must be approached in a scientific manner. Sampling Techniques Sampling practices and techniques are as varied as the mines in which they are used. The method(s) chosen must be tailored to suit the company and mining needs. For instance, tabular uranium deposits, vein gold deposits, and porphyry copper deposits pose special problems in conducting unbiased sampling. The mine geologist or engineer in charge must develop a sampling method, test it in a sample area, and then critically evaluate the results. If the results from the test area are accurate within the economic limits established by the company, they then may be adopted for general use in the mine. Four routine sampling methods are suitable for specific sampling objectives in the daily mine routine: (1) channel sampling, (2) chip sampling, (3) grab sampling, and (4) bulk sampling. The final sampling results depend upon how the four methods are combined to accurately determine the grade of the ore body. When used in conjunction with each other during different stages of mine development, the channel, chip, grab, and bulk sampling methods provide an in-house check or a comparison by which mining methods and sampling procedures can be evaluated. However, the most valid check is based upon the daily mill production. Channel Sampling Channel samples consist of cuttings collected from a groove cut into the rock about 102 mm (4 in.) wide and 19 mm (0.75 in.) deep. Various tools ranging from a 1.8-kg (4-lb) hammer and moil to a pneumatic chisel can be used to cut the sample. Accessibility and rock hardness determine the applicable sampling tools. Before attempting to take a sample, the rock surface must be cleaned thoroughly; the method of cleaning depends upon the amount of mine dust accumulated on the surface or the degree of alteration of the rock surface. Typical cleaning methods 'employ a wire brush, water, or chipping a fresh surface. Next, the sample outline is marked on the prepared surface, taking care to choose appropriate sample loca- tions. After determining the proper sample outline and length, the sample can be chiseled out, catching the rock fragments on a canvas tarpaulin on the floor, in a powder box, in a canvas bag to avoid contamination, or by some other suitable means to capture all of the sample. Vertical veins present a special problem because the drift's back usually is arched, not square. For example, Fig. 1 shows that if sample intervals are measured from A' to D', the length of the sample interval is greater than the true vein width, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the ore reserves. The correct method would collect three samples at A'-B', B'-C', and C'-D', using either actual measurements in the mine represented by A-B, B-C, and C-D or trigonometric calculations to determine the true ore thickness. Then, each sample can be weighted by grade and true thickness for the vein. Channel lengths usually are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft), and it is good practice to divide longer samples into smaller intervals according to structures, changes in rock types, or differences in rock hardnesses. The influence of those features on the mineralization then can be determined. Chip Sampling Chip sampling is a variation of channel sampling used when the rock is too hard to channel sample economically or when little variation in the mineral content indicates that this sampling method will yield results similar to those of channel sampling. Rather than cutting a channel in the rock, small chips are flaked off at regular intervals over the entire face or area being the mine. sampled. Care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of variations in the rock hardness and type. hi^ method is fast and useful in preliminary evaluations, but it should not be used for quantitative ore-reserve calculations. Grab Sampling Grab sampling is a fast method for double checking either channel or chip-sampling procedures, and, in some instances, mine production can be estimated from carefully taken grab samples. Grab sampling takes equal amounts of material at selected intervals over a mine dump, a muck pile, or from an ore car to estimate its Channel Sampling mineral content. Generally, this method is not considered reliable. Many independent variables can affect this type of sampling process. A recent development using XRD techniques, a unique fixed detector, specifically permitting full mineralogical information simultaneously for the first time, specially designed sample preparation and presentation system and Rietveld codes provide a continuous real- time analysis on the true contained mineral polymorphic composition of powder streams such as ore materials, cement, ground clinker or any other mineral stream conducive to XRD analysis. There are several COSMA systems currently operating in the US, Canada, Italy and Australia, proving service and reliability of this concept. The mineralogical information generated continuously in real time is used for automated efficiency, product quality and reduces costs. Quantitative Phase Analysis information is transmitted to the plant DCS via Modbus over RS422 or ethernet. Some limited information is stored in the on-board computers for optional future use at the operator?s option.

The Iron Ore Industry has perhaps seen more varied and drastic changes in its approach to crushing and grinding in the last 5 years than any of the other mineral industries, Multimillion ton per year plants have become common place. Centralized control and computers have become an established benefit. Autogenous grinding along with a variety of rod and ball grinding flowsheets are in use. This morning I will discuss a few of the more important and new concepts in the control of these crushing and grinding circuits.

The block cave mining method utilized by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) generates fines and allows the inflow of water. Both constituents have contributed to unfavorable characteristics: an increase in ore material plasticity and fluidity. Unfavorable material needs to be monitored and managed as it passes from intermediate ore stockpiles through feeders and then to milling operations. We describe an implementation of several Video Data Analytics (VDA) algorithms on smart cameras to quantify the potential fluidity and plasticity by measuring the apparent velocity and agglomeration of material flowing through ore feeders. This approach to VDA on smart cameras is a cost effective, self-contained, solution to identify these unfavorable characteristics. The solution allows the operators to manage the related operational risks, maintain safe production and govern feeder rates when material is unfavorable, which is expected as PTFI proceeds deeper into the underground orebody

China's coal energy development, characteristics and relationships with atmospheric pollution are reported. Atmospheric pollution sources from coal combustion are analyzed. Some of the projects for clean coal combustion in the Shanghai area include use of industrial briquettes, investigation of coal combustion additives, and blending combustion of coal with industrial wastes. Coal is China's main energy source, and 80 percent of China's annual coal production is used in combustion devices. Coal-flue gases from the domestic stoves and industrial furnaces are the main atmospheric pollution source. China's atmospheric pollution is, in fact, the pollution of coal-flue gases. To 2000, in view of China's energy needs as a developing nation, the atmospheric pollution from coal combustion must receive our utmost attention.

The Indian Mining sector is subjected to a number of trends including call for global transition towards the route to sustainable development. Several regulations were enacted by the Government departments, from time to time, in order to identify the problems faced by the mining industry, including small-scale mining operations and to suggest appropriate mitigation measures in the form of environmental standards and certifications. During this process, a pursuit of sustainable development is regarded as an important area responding to socio-economic conditions, priorities and thus guides eventually corporate policies and practices. Thus, there is a need to formulate strategies for sustainable development. Based on these strategies some environmental indicators were developed in order to track down the progress and to evaluate its success. A case study pertaining to a group of iron ore mines in North Goa and Chromite mines in Sukinda, Orissa was selected for this study. Base line environmental data has been generated in the respective study sites. A core set of environmental indicators monitoring environmental progress based on the P-S-R model pioneered by OECD is linked with indicators for assessing the integration of environmental concerns.

The transportation of mine products incurs a cost which can have a significant bearing on the competitive position of the product. This statement not only holds true for the transportation of the finished product but certainly as much for the in- plant haulage of the raw materials. Extensive literature is available both in North America and Europe on all aspects 02 these questions and to cite only a few of them: Pipelining of slurries, oil and gas, shipping of minerals and oil from the Arctic by icebreaking tankers, airlifting of metals or concentrates, etc. This paper is concerned with movable crushing plants as opposed to stationary and their influence on the in-plant transportation, that is trucks vs. belts.

Constantly increasing demand for energy materials and metal ores brought about tremendous progress in mining techniques which are characterised by a high degree of mechanization and concentration of works. One of the recent trends in underground mining mechanization is connected with an application of heavy machines with diesel engines [l],[2]. The introduction of diesel engines in mining all over world caused not only improvement in economic conditions but also the necessity to prevent contamination of air in the mine by toxic agents in diesel exhaust emissions. A generally used way of eliminating exhaust gases is proper ventilation of the cross cut by means of providing permanent exchange of air that would guarantee in every point of the cross cut and in every moment the decay in concentration of exhaust gases beyond threshold limit [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The present paper is an attempt to define a mathematical model describing the changes of concentration in cross cut face to which fresh air is distributed by ventilators and tubes in a forcing way. Obtained model should offer its practical adaptability to engineering calculation of the amount of fresh air needed for diluting and eliminating exhaust gases beyond threshold limit. Justness of these models has been confirmed by investigation of the growth of nitrogen dioxide concentration in air environment in some cross cut faces of Kiirunavaara iron ore mine in Kiruna (Sweden).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a novel technique to control methane in underground mines by using methane oxidizing microorganisms termed methanotrophs. Coalbed methane has been responsible for many mine disasters and will continue to be a safety obstacle to mining deeper coal seams. Deeper seams of coal contain more methane gas, and better strategies for removing the methane will need to be developed. Methanotrophic microorganisms offer a novel alternative since they physically remove the methane, are commonly found in soils, and already have been found to exist in many foreign coal mines. Proposed applications of this concept include the inertization of buffer zones separating active mining areas from sealed gobs, reducing ventilation from ventilated gobs and reducing methane content from longwall gobs. Current work includes an assessment of the abundance of naturally occurring methanotrophs in U.S. mines, testing the amount of methane that various types of microorganisms can consume, studying the effects or use of the byproduct gases, and finally developing practical appl ications of this biotechnology to coal mining. This paper reports on the initial laboratory testing that measured the quantity of methane consumed by two types of methanotrophic microorganisms. Average rates of methane consumption were between 1 and 4 ml/hour in column flow tests. A possible gob application may require that 750 cfm of methane be consumed during periods of maximum outgassing. It is premature at this time to accurately scale from laboratory to mine application.

The in-pit placement of crushing and conveying equipment results in a flattening of the pit slope of a multiple-bench open pit mine. To maximize the economic benefit of lower haulage costs associated with in-pit conveying, one must minimize the cost of the flatter slope which is expressed in terms of additional stripping or tied up ore. A computer program that compares the tonnage aspects of various conveyor layouts will be discussed.

Using a PC can help an operator analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. The cost of microcomputers is low, and fit into the budget of even small mines. Many software packages are also low cost and general software such as spreadsheet, word processing, and data base management programs can help the small miner organize and evaluate information very quickly. A basic hardware configuration is proposed, including hardware upgrades and general and technical mining software packages. The hardware and software suggested can be used by very small as well as larger operations. PC's can be incorporated into all phases of a mining operation at a minimal cost and capabilities can be expanded as the operation grows.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) has recently completed the construction of copper leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning facilities at their Toquepala and Cuajone plants in Southern Peru. Much of the ore for these new operations is the result of the existing mining operations that have been in existence as early as 1959. At Toquepala, pre-conditioning and bacterial dump leaching of the sulfide ore that was too low in copper content to be processed through the copper concentrator began in 1987. The Cuajone heap leach operation is treating copper oxide ore that has been stockpiled since the Cuajone concentrator began operation in 1976. The pregnant leach solutions from the dump leaching at Toquepala and the permanent pad heap at Cuajone are combined into one plant feed solution. Adjacent to the large dumps at Toquepala, a solvent extraction and electrowinning facility has been constructed. The electrowinning facility has a planned annual production rate of35,000 metric tons per year Grade A cathode copper. Initial production of the cathode copper began in November 1995.
