Introduction and Historical Background State Geological Surveys have been deeply involved in industrial minerals from their inception beginning in the first half of the 19th Century. To Massachusetts belongs the credit of having carried out the first Geological survey under state auspices on the Western Hemisphere. One of the causes leading up to this survey was. Governor Lincoln's message to the legislature of May 29, 1830, from which I quote in part: "Much knowledge of the natural history of the country would thus be gained (from a geological survey), and especially the presence of valuable ores, with the localities and extent of quarries and of coal and lime formations, objects of inquiry so essential to internal improvements and the advancement of domestic prosperity, would be discovered.". Similar phraseology is present in practically all of the initial organic acts creating the first State Surveys. High on the list of priorities for these embryo surveys was an inventory of the mineral resources of the State with particular emphasis on the industrial minerals. Prom these early beginnings, the state surveys have developed a great wealth of geological data either directly or indirectly relating to the development of mineral resources. One can gain some conception of the effort that state surveys today place on industrial minerals studies by noting the projects in which they are engaged as reported in the State Geologists Journal. "An innovative method to reduce acid rock drainage (ARD) and sediment loading of a recreational lake was used in the Red River watershed in northern New Mexico. The Red River drains a mining district that contains multiple naturally occurring hydrothermal alteration zones that release ARD and sediment to the river during episodic summer rain storms. A lake is near the mouth of the watershed and is filled with water from the river through a sluice gate and diversion. An automated actuator was installed on the sluice gate to close when the river is impacted by high-suspended sediment. Water quality probes were installed at the sluice gate to monitor the river water for turbidity, specific conductivity and water depth. If high turbidity is measured, the sluice gate closes automatically. Remote access is setup with a computer view screen to review the real-time system status. Once the turbidity drops below a threshold, the sluice gate is reopened remotely. The automated sluice gate has successfully reduced the amount of ARD and suspended sediment entering the lake. This reduction has resulted in an improved aquatic habitat for the fishery and benthic macroinvertebrate community. BACKGROUND The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. The river drains an area of approximately 190 square miles and spans elevations from 6,600 feet at its confluence with the Rio Grande to its headwaters near 12,000 feet (Figure 1). The river generally flows to the west along most if its length.The Red River watershed includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. The alteration zones were created by intrusion of high-silica granites and subvolcanic porphyries, with associated hydrothermal fluids, into the volcanic rocks of the Questa Caldera. The hydrothermal alteration is also responsible for the molybdenum deposits in the area. Rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks has resulted in the formation of alteration scars. The alteration scars are characterized by steep, erodible slopes with little vegetation and incised gullies. Debris fans from the drainages containing active alteration scars have formed and typically consist of poorly sorted sand and gravel that is distinctly pale yellow in color. Some of the more prominent scars are located in the Hansen, Straight and Hottentot Creek drainages downstream of the town of Red River."

In 1971, during the planning and design stages of a $300 million expansion, the Iron Ore Company of Canada Ltd. through its Engineers, Canadian Bechtel Ltd., came out with a preliminary request for two (2) 10,000 LTPH belt conveyor scale systems. These Systems were to provide weighing accuracies within 2.5% of the iron ore pellets and concentrates in transit on two (2) 72" wide conveyors from the stockpiles to the ships. Each conveyor system would be fed by a rail mounted bucket wheel reclaimer, with the conveyed material moving directly to the ship loaders with no inter- mediate surge and/or storage bins between the stockpiles and the ships. The bucket wheel reclaimer discharge rates would vary from 0-9600 LTPH in cyclic periods, with the periods varying from 1-5 minutes - dependent on the level of the reclaim buckets in relation to the stockpile as well as the slewing rate of the reclaimer. There would be frequent interruptions for bucket wheel repositioning (laterally and vertically), changing ship holds, and trimming ship holds. These frequent zero flow conditions, approximately 500 per 150,000 ton ship, could last 1-5 minutes. In addition, the conveyors on which the scales were to be mounted would be over the water and subject to the wind and cold of Northern Quebec. These Systems would be in use 350 working days of the year and would load 30,000,000 LT/yr. (An average of 90,000/working day).

To properly analyze and apply mining equipment, a systematic, current, inclusive, and simple classification scheme is required. This paper provides such a classification for Roadheaders. This Roadheader classification is based on factors, such as the rock cutterhead, the boom type, and the chassis configuration. It first assigns Roadheaders as an equipment type within the larger group of Integrated Excavators. The Roadheader type is then delineated into the following subtypes: the standard, the extended boom, the tunnelers, and the miscellaneous. Next, these subtypes are devolved into kinds, and finally variants and attachments are considered. To resolve inconsistencies in characterizing the Roadheader, cross-referencing is employed within the classification scheme.

The Afton property is located 180 air miles East-Northeast of Vancouver and nine miles West of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people, in South Central British Columbia, Canada. The mine is adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 2,200 feet above sea level. The orebody is a porphyry, copper deposit that has undergone supergene alteration. The-major economic minerals in the supergene zone are native copper and chalcocite with chalcopyrite and bornite in the hypergene areas. The grade is one percent with an overall copper distribution: 70% native, 25% chalcocite and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite and covellite. The ore also contains important, but variable amounts of gold and silver.

Metal prices are often predicted by relying on time trend projections of various economic indicators or even the trend in price itself Thus, time is the underlying explanatory variable acting through at best, a limited selection of economic variables. The price prediction method described in this paper differs from this by analyzing hundreds of economic variables to develop a few principle components that automatically capture the fundamental changes in the economy and delete duplicate or irrelevant information. This leaves a few principle variables to describe a state-space representation of the economy which can then be used for prediction. Forecasts of the price of a metal are then made based on these principle variables.

Potash was first discovered in Saskatchewan in 1943 but its continuous extraction did not begin until 1962. In the years since then, potash has played an important role in the economic and political life of the province. And, as is well-known, the most eventful time in the life of the industry occurred in 1975 when the Government of Saskatchewan decided to become a major participant in potash production. To understand that decision, however, requires an understanding of the economic development of Saskatchewan and of relations between the industry and the government prior to 1975. This year, Saskatchewan celebrates its 75th year as a province. For most of those years, we have been an agrarian economy and society, dependent on exports of cereal grains, mostly wheat, for a livelihood. Even today, agriculture accounts for about 25% of the province's Gross Domestic Product (Economic Review, 1979, p. 7) and difficulties in agriculture spread rapidly to the rest of the provincial economy. The difficulties and risks that go hand in hand with being a "one crop" economy were known as long ago as 1920 but were not fully appreciated until the combination of depression and drought in the 1930's turned the prairie grain- belt into a dustbowl. Some idea of the severity of the depression is revealed by the following data: in 1928, Saskatchewan produced 321 million bushels of wheat. By 1931, the total fell to 132 million bushels and, in 1937, to a mere 37 million bushels. The value of agricultural products sold off farms fell from $273,000,000 in 1928 to a meagre $51,000,000 in 1937. The impact of such a fall of agricultural incomes was catastrophic since about 70% of the population of some 921,000 persons lived in rural, agriculture-dependent areas (Britnel.1, 1939, p. 14).

The Highland Uranium Project in Wyoming is an in-situ leach (ISL) facility owned and operated by Power Resources Inc. It is the largest uranium producer in the U.S. and the largest uranium producer by ISL in the western world. With its limited capital investment and low operating costs, the ISL technique has been demonstrated to be an effective and environmentally sensitive method for recovering minerals from these low grade and otherwise uneconomic orebodies.

Research investigations on the chemistry of the adsorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon have mostly reduced the role of activated carbon as the provider of the large surface area needed for adsorption. Most do not go beyond suggesting that oxygen functional groups on carbon play a key role in the adsorption process. Our research shows that the nature of the material, specifically its structure, is a crucial factor in the adsorption equation. To delineate the effect of adsorbent properties, gold cyanide was adsorbed on a series of carbonaceous adsorbents, including lignite, coals, anthracites, carbon blacks, graphite and activated carbon, which covers wide variations of composition, surface acid group content, and degree of graphitization. The results show that the adsorption of gold cyanide per unit area of adsorbent is not related to the amount of oxygen groups on the surface or even the total oxygen content of the material. However, they show very strong correlation with the degree of graphitization of the adsorbent, which indicates that the graphitic plates of activated carbon play the most important role. The findings suggest that majority of the adsorption occurs on the plate faces of the graphite crystallites of activated carbon.

The Getchell and Twin Creeks mines are located along a north-northeast trending structural zone in Humboldt county, Nevada approximately 40 miles northeast of the town of Winnemucca. Gold mineralization at the Getchell mine is represented principally by sulfide-rich ores, which contain significant amounts of realgar and\ orpiment, with the gold being recovered through processes which involve pressure oxidation. In contrast, oxide ores are currently being mined and processed at the Twin Creeks mine although large reserves of sulfide ores, some of which contain orpiment-realgar-stibnite, have been defined (Bloomstein et al., 1990). The Getchell and Twin Creeks mines represent major gold orebodies but very little has been published pertaining to mineral paragenesis and the characteristics of ore-forming fluids for these deposits.

The full importance of tailings disposal is yet to be realized by the mining industry, but our awareness of its present and future implications is growing faster, perhaps, than any single phase of ore processing. Few engineers can look very far into the future because of the complexity of the problems that may confront us if we project from the general indifference of past years through what we are already being expected to correct in existing operations, to confrontations with new statutes and an awakened public in any new plants hence- forth. The mistakes of the past have not been limited to the United States nor even to other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Indeed, all continents and subcontinents have suffered from myopia in releasing the tailings without retaining responsibility. However, the US as one of the world's great leaders in technology has a particularly unimpressive record. It may be safely generalized that the degree of control applied to the tailings of a milling operation has depended upon several factors more important than national boundaries. Thus in arid and semiarid climates no incentive was needed other than the scarcity of water to create a permanent and stable lodgment for mill tailings. On the other hand. where water has been plentiful. the temptation to let the tailings run into a river or lake or ocean (at least at certain times of the year) was often irresistible. So we find that modem tailings disposal in the southwest deserts of this country, with one or two notable exceptions where very serious breaks seem to occur at regular intervals, is satisfactory according to the standards of the 195QF and 1960s. while in various operations in Idaho, Michigan, western Colorado. Newfoundland, and elsewhere the record has been less praiseworthy. In the same way, cyanide plants which did not concern themselves about leakage, seepage, spillage, or wastage of tailings pulps with solutions containing toxic levels of free or combined cyanide soon heard a demand for better control. In consequence the industry has seen a growing use of cyanide regeneration of tailings or wash solutions, elimination of leakage, and careful structuring of tailing dams. The chemical and thermal qualities of tailing waters have occasionally been a spur to good tailings management. Some tailings disposal problems for example, the southeastern Florida phosphate clays and the Bayer red muds-have been given the intensive study they merited, but not always with much success.

Flotation was introduced in phosphate rock processing in the late twenties and since then it has been an important part of the concentration process. More than two thirds of the rock produced in Florida is upgraded by the flotation process. Since no crushing or milling steps are involved in the material preparation, the flotation plant feed is coarser than in most other mineral flotation systems. During hydraulic processing of the rock, particles in the size range of -14, +150 mesh constitute the flotation feed. This size fraction is further classified by hydraulic sizers, stationary screens and vibrating screens into a coarse (-14, +35 mesh) and a fine (-35, +150 mesh) flotation feed. The flotation techniques for concentrating the fine feed as practiced by the Florida Phosphate producers have been standardized over the years, however, methods for upgrading the coarse feed differ from plant to plant. The stability of longwall chain pillars depends not only on the mechanical properties of coal and surrounding rocks, but also geological and mining conditions. In order to evaluate the effects of each, variable, the orthogonal experiment design was employed in this study for significance analysis. The study concluded that the stability of longwall chain pillars is mainly controlled by the ratio of pillar stress to pillar strength, the ratio of Young's moduluds of the roof to coal and floor to coal, entry width, pillar width and the internal friction angle of coal. Additionally, horizontal stress, panel width and mining height also play a significant role.

This paper describes research being undertaken by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) which is designed to assist the continuous miner operator and section foreman in the performance of their jobs. The project will initially provide visual assistance to the miner operator, and later will semi-automate the mining (cutting) process. Using a technique known as "RF tagging," the project will also provide real-time or near-real-time information about the performance of the loading and hauling units to the section foreman, allowing him to quickly detect problems and take action where appropriate. The project is based upon the application of currently available technology, and the first phase is scheduled for in-mine testing within the next year.

INTRODUCTION Column-type supports are used to prevent roof falls in underground excavations. The first individual column supports were made from timber that was cut to fit the irregular heights of mine seams. Because the seam height of the material removed varied throughout the mine, timber posts generally could be used only once. During the I 920s, steel friction props began to appear in British and European mines, and, by the 1950s, thousands of these props were being used. However, the steel friction props were heavy, difficult to install, and difficult to recover. Furthermore, the friction props could not be preloaded, and their yielding behavior was rather erratic. In 1946, hydraulic props were introduced in En¬gland, and, within a few years, they replaced friction props throughout Europe. The first application of hy¬draulic props in the United States occurred in the 1950s, during early experiments with longwall mining. Modern technology and high-production mining procedures have combined to make the use of hydraulic props a very acceptable method of providing temporary heavy-duty support for production areas. In areas such as development headings, where only modest roof loads are expected, lighter-duty jackscrews, ratchet jacks, and light hydraulic props are used. ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SUPPORTS The acceptance of hydraulic supports has been wide¬spread during the past 25 years, proving their reliability and effectiveness in preventing roof falls. Some of the advantages provided by hydraulic supports are: 1) Individual hydraulic props can be installed within 30 sec, resulting in a minimum exposure of per¬sonnel and equipment to an unsupported roof. 2) Hydraulic props can be preloaded to more than 4.5 t (5.0 st), increasing the frictional resistance between the rock strata. Thus, the roof is kept tight, improving the behavior of the unsupported ground. 3) If gradual roof sagging or bottom heaving im¬poses an irresistible force, the hydraulic prop yields gradually and continues to support the ground. 4) The support capacities of the hydraulic props most widely used range between 10 and 20 t (11 and 22 st). Their support capacities are maintained during yielding to an irresistible force. 5) Hydraulic props can be recovered rapidly. Where no other supports are provided for the roof, as in pillar¬ing operations, the hydraulic props can be recovered by remote means. 6) The length of hydraulic props is readily adjust¬able allowing them to be reused in seams where roof height varies. 7) Studies of mining operations indicate that the use of hydraulic props increases both personnel safety and mine productivity. The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the key parameters influencing the gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide dosing strategy was changed to reduce preg-rob gold masses and cut reagent consumption A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in CIL was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over plant throughput. These changes resulted in a recovery increase of at least 2%, worth $111,000/month at $300/oz, and concomitant reagent cost savings of $55,000/month.

In a proposed rulemaking regulating asbestos, nonasbestos varieties of Tremolite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite would be excluded from the regulations controlling permissible exposure to asbestos fibers. This proposed rulemaking is perceived as improving the scientific basis of the regulation of asbestos because it recognizes that there are no scientific data, either mineralogical or health related, which support the regulation of nonasbestos Tremoiite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite in the same manner as asbestos fibers. However, the proposed regulation, while representing a major advance in the treatment of AT A for regulatory purposes, does not provide an adequate analytical method for distinguishing between asbestos and nonasbestos particles, nor an adequate description of the regulated minerals. This paper addresses those topics, recommending that OSHA include an appropriate mineralogical definition, and implement a discriminate counting procedure to distinguish asbestos from nonasbestos particles.

"The iron ores of the Lake Superior region are found almost exclusively in rocks of Huronian age, the only exception of importance being in the Vermilion district. It may be estimated that about 95 per cent of the ores thus far mined have been obtained from Huronian rocks. Although these ores come from rocks of varying age and slightly varying type, they have many features in common, and therefore may readily be described together.The iron formations of the Lake Superior region consist essentially of interbanded layers of mixtures in widely varying proportions of silica and iron oxide, and are called taconite, ferruginous chert, or jaspilite. They vary considerably in hard¬ness and color, depending upon the tenor of silica and the history of the rock. Local phases of the iron bearing formation consist of cherty iron carbonates, greenalite or ferrous silicate, rocks, amphibole-magnetite masses, cherts and slates, and pyritic quartz rocks. The average iron content of all the original phases of the iron bearing formations, excluding interbedded slates, is about 25 per cent, while the average iron content for all portions of the formation, whether in the original condition or not, is about 38 per cent. It is believed that this difference is due essen¬tially to the removal of silica in solution from the. primary phases, and, of course, such removal of silica has in many cases produced material now used as iron ore, since it contains con¬siderably more than 38 per cent of iron."

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease in head with increasing volume while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point But wait a minute: Isn't head loss a negative number, a debit? And isn't fan head an energy addition, a credit? This, as every ventilation instructor knows, is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves -pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values -and still obtain the correct operating point: adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at \\tIich the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure; with the standard approach it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel circuit or ventilation net\wrk. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.
