Improved haul-road conditions can have a positive impact on mine operations, resulting in heightened safety, productivity gains, longer tire life and lower maintenance costs. For these reasons, a monitoring program is required to ensure the operational efficiency of the haul roads. Currently, at Bald Mountain Mine, monthly site severity studies, ad hoc inspections by frontline supervisors or operator feedback reporting are used to assess road conditions. These methods are subjective and provide low temporal resolution data. This case study presents novel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies, applied on a critical section of haul road at Bald Mountain, to showcase the potential for monitoring haul roads. The results show that orthophotos and digital elevation models can be used to assess the road smoothness condition and to check the road design compliance. Moreover, the aerial mapping allows detection of surface water, rock spillage and potholes on the road that can be quickly repaired/removed by the dedicated road maintenance team.

The US Bureau of Mines has funded several research and development projects in computerized mine monitoring and control. Hardware and software components have been sufficiently developed so that mine operators have been provided with an efficient means to comply with federal regulations and increase mine safety. Several cost benefits have been realized as well, particularly with increased conveyor belt haulage availability. Western Fuels-Utah Inc. approached the Bureau to assist in planning, installing, and evaluating a computerized mine monitoring and control system because of the agency's research experience in this area. The installation was planned for Western Fuel's Deserado mine, located in Rangely, CO. Since a large, complex, underground mine producing about 2.4 Mt/a (2.7 million stpy) of coal was projected, the company anticipated significant benefits in safety and efficiency through a computerized monitoring and control system. A major part of the cooperative program was to document and evaluate the system design, installation, and operation. This will assist others to adequately design, specify, install, and operate future systems. Mine description The Deserado mine plan and layout have important impacts on the monitoring system requirements. Long range plans are to produce 2.4 Mt (2.7 million st) of clean coal annually from two longwall sections and four continuous sections. Presently, two continuous miner sections operate under 213 m (700 ft) of overburden in the 2.3 to 2.5 m (7.5 to 8.5 ft) thick D seam to develop main, submain, and panel entries have developed for a longwall. These began operation in December 1986. Belt conveyors haul the coal from the mining sections to a 1.4-m (54-in.) belt located in the upper compartment of the slope. The lower compartment contains a hoist for men and material transport. From the slope, the coal moves to two 9 kt (10,000 st) raw coal storage silos, then to a 680-t/h (750-stph) preparation plant. After cleaning, a 5.5-km (3.5-mile) overland conveyor carries the coal to a clean coal slot storage and rail load-out facility. An electric locomotive then transports the coal to the Bonanza Power Plant in Utah. Allen-Bradley monitoring and control hardware and software controls the preparation plant, with two PLC-3 programmable controllers and a Process Control Industries D-1200 color graphics interface. The system operator uses three "smart" color video display units and an alarm printer for hard copy records. Originally, it also monitored and controlled the conveyors from the bottom of the slope to the top of the raw coal silos, the preparation plant, the overland conveyors, the main mine ventilation fan, and the hoist. Some of these features, though, were later transferred to the mine system.

The main phosphate minerals, apatite and francolite, are characterized by intensive selective photoluminescence, connected with impurities of Eu2+, Ce3+, V4+, Mn2+ and (UO22+ ). The non-uniform distribution of phosphate minerals in lumps makes photoluminescence sorting possible. As result, an intermediate product is recovered which is enriched by P205 and has relatively small amounts of chert, dolomite, calcite, fluorite, etc. In the case of Zin Phosphate Plant coarse rejects, for example, it is possible to separate a product enriched by francolite, practically free of chert and with a lowered calcite content. This material is suitable for flotation, with a potential 6-7 % increase yield of concentrate.

Investigation of the traps in LiF:Mg, a multi-peak phosphor, was carried out using simple phosphorescence decay analysis. Half lives at room temperature of the trapping centres (peaks -lb, -la, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3a and 3) in the phosphor after irradiation with [a] radiation were found to be 3 s, 5 s, 28 s, 4 min, 15 min, 1 h, 6 h and 2 d respectively. Justification for the method of analysis is pro- vided and the results of measurements compared with published data. The effects of pre-annealing at 400°C for 1 h and 80°C for 24 h on the trapping configuration and on the trapping efficiencies were also studied.

The study compares productivity, morphology, and structure of indium deposits on both cathodes, finding that nickel cathodes generally yield better results.

Borehole mining, as a viable concept for recovering deep sedimentary mineral resources, historically has been long on promise but short on results. Application of the technology seems best suited for recovery of Miocene phosphate resources on the East Coast of the US. These deposits are potentially enormous in scope and underlie sections of the coastal plain and the near offshore continental shelf. The landside portion of these deposits is generally too deep to mine using conventional open pit methods. Recovery of these minerals requires development of alternative mining systems. A significant proportion of the offshore resources appear to occur at depths below the practical limits of cutter suction dredges and may even exceed the limits of bucket ladder dredges. In most cases, these deposits are covered by overburden that must he removed and redeposited before the mineral section can be mined. The depth, thickness, composition of overburden and environmental sensitivity of a particular location would greatly impact mining system selection. It is probable that dredging would not be an environmentally acceptable mining method in many of the areas underlain by this phosphate rock. In cases such as these, new processes such as borehole mining must be evolved or the resource will remain undeveloped. A borehole mining test program, using an existing prototype borehole system, successfully extracted Miocene phosphate in northeast Florida in 1984-1985. The top of the main mineral zone was 80 m (261 ft) below the surface. Based on the results of this test program. plus subsequent laboratory testing and engineering studies, a new prototype borehole mining system was designed in 1986. This design incorporated several innovations of offering potentially higher productivity and lower power consumption than was achieved with the previous test unit. Economic restraints at that tine prevented the actual construction and testing of this new design.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. In its role of providing technology to promote the efficient use of minerals and mineral process waste, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research at: its Tuscaloosa Research Center to identify and develop high volume uses for phosphogypsum. Mixtures containing a maximum of 50 percent phosphogypsum, 6 to 10 percent lime, and the remainder fly ash had compressive strengths as high as 4,800 psi. The effects of the mounts of phosphogypsum, lime, and fly ash were investigated. Also, the effects of fly ash to lime ratios were studied.

At a time when the US mining industry is struggling to emerge from a lengthy recession, the burden of new, unnecessary regulations could shorten the life of, or be fatal to many domestic mining companies. The possibility of new restrictions on the use of diesel equipment operating in underground mines is one example of unnecessary regulations. These could cause serious harm to the economic health of many mining companies. Whether future health-related Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations restricting the use of diesel equipment are unnecessary, depends on whether these restrictions are supported by fact or created in a political environment. The mining industry has benefited from the use of diesel equipment in underground metal-non-metal and coal mines for more than 50 years. Since first introduce to underground mines in the early 1940s, the use of diesel equipment has grown in numbers and size. During this time, the mining industry in America has achieved much higher productivity rates and improved safety. Although all these gains cannot be attributed to the greater use of diesel equipment, a high percentage can be. I began my professional mining ca¬reer in 1970 working in the Missouri lead mines. At that time, the use of diesel equipment was well established in metal-non-metal mines throughout the United States and many parts of the world. As director of mining research for St. Joe Minerals Corp. (now The Doe Run Co.), I was involved in research to improve mining productivity and safety. This involved investigating the better and safer use of existing or new mining methods, products, equipment and people. Within this group, diesel equipment had the single largest positive impact.

Gold ores in the geologically more recent rocks are often associated with copper minerals which pose problems of high reagent consumption with conventional cyanidation practice. Many examples exist in northern Australia, Indonesia, Papua­New Guinea, Chile, and Brazil where, despite various treatment options (LaBrooy, 1992), the processing of oxide and transition ores is uneconomic either for copper or gold recovery. Hence, there is a need for a reagent which is selective for gold without leaching copper minerals. The ammonia-cyanide system appears to meet this criterion (Muir et al, 1989; LaBrooy et al, 1991; Costello et al, 1992; Hayes and Corrans, 1992) but it has proven difficult to optimise and apply to a variety of ores due to differences in the mineralogy and reactivity of ores and a lack of understanding of how the system works. Recent work on the mechanism, however, (Muir et al, 1993) has thrown a new light on the problem which should allow better process control. Ammonia­cyanide mixtures behave neither like free cyanide nor free ammonia and too much of either reagent in the mixture is detrimental. The key to the process is understanding how ammonia enhances gold extraction yet inhibits copper extraction in an essentially cyanide environment.

Tailings and/or wastewater generated from gold extraction plants employing cyanida­ tion must often be treated to remove the cyanides and heavy metals for environmental reasons and/or gold extraction inhibition reasons, due to the presence of heavy metals like copper, which have a detrimen­ tal effect during cyanidation. In recent years, the treatment of effluents contain­ ing cyanides and heavy metals has been widely studied, Among chemical treatment methods, the use of hydrogen peroxide has been universally employed as a viable option. However, in some cases, effluents containing high concentrations of heavy metals and/or solids decompose the hydrogen peroxide, an undesirable side reaction. The addition of stabilizers or other peroxygen compounds together with hydrogen peroxide can, however, considerably reduce the rate of decomposition and thus result in detoxi­ fication costs, which are considerably less than the standard detoxification process using hydrogen peroxide. In some cases, the reaction rate can also be increased, resul­ ting in lower investment costs for new detoxification plants. This paper deals with the results of developmental work performed in the recent past and introduces some new processes with the aim of optimizing reagent consumption and costs.

The pressure pre-oxidation of refractory gold concentrate from the Golden Mile has been investigated and the conditions of temperature, oxygen pressure and percent sulphide breakdown for maximum gold extraction optimised. Both tellurides and sulphides were oxidised under optimal conditions and deposited in the residue as oxides along with haematite. Under non- optimal conditions, a reactive basic ferric sulphate was formed instead on the unreactive haematite. Maximum gold recovery after cyanidation (tail < 1 ppm) is well in excess of that produced by the present roasting process (tail 3-4 ppm).

INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. The use of clay granules as carriers for pesticides dates from the early 1940&apos;s and by the present day represents a business conservatively estimated at between 200 - 300 thousand tons / year in the U.S. alone. Aside from economic and specific target pest efficacy advantages, the use of clay granules as pesticide carriers also delivers a number of environmental benefits which will be reviewed. Topics to be discussed will include: 1) drift control (versus liquid sprays), 2) mobility (in the environment), 3) worker safety, and 4) transportation (spill) safety.

This paper discusses the design of long panels for longwall mining at Twentymile Coal Company (TCC) from conception to implementation. The case study of the long panels at Twentymile includes extensive mine plan reengineering in the early 1990&apos;s to world record production months in 1996 and 1997. The obstacles of subsidence engineering, environmental regulations, conveyance, ventilation, equipment design, and continuous miner (CM) development timing had to be overcome to successfully begin longwall production within a 4 year time frame. The background and some detail for each of these areas listed will be discussed to show how the coordination of many facets must be pulled together to implement a successful long panel mine plan.

The Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority (TRWRA) in Monmouth County, New Jersey, is replacing its aging Pleasure Bay Interceptor (PBI) with a new 54-in interceptor in a 3,250-foot long 8 to 10-foot diameter tunnel and a new 50-mgd main pump station (MPS). A comprehensive phased geotechnical investigation was performed, including SPTs, CPTs and geophysics. A channel filled with soft marine sediments was identified. The tunnel is set in stiff to hard marine soil to enable using a less expensive open-face TBM. The thickness of tunnel cover under the channel is optimized through numerical analyses to avoid a deeper pump station yet maintaining tunnel stability with controlling seepage.

Flowsheet improvements, such as series/parallel SX plant configurations, discontinuation of plant sumps and improved filter pumping concepts, the use of in-settler baffle systems, and the Krebs and combined mixer-settler designs offer opportunities to reduce SX plant cost. Today&apos;s plants employ permanent cathodes and mechanical stripping, and the increased capital cost can be offset by labor savings and higher current densities. The wider use of HDPE and new cell construction materials also reduce capital cost. The "Portelex" type of relocatable design embodies such new, cost-saving measures in a simple basic plant. Organic inventory and losses are reduced by new, fast-settling, hybrid organic reagents with improved kinetics and selectivity.

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.

"The seventh annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held last February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ. A total of 21 students entered the poster competition. The students were required to submit one-page abstracts, which were reviewed by the judges, after which they prepared posters to display their work. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the student explained his/her research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. Recognizing the effort required to participate, the MPD provided monetary rewards to all participants. First place received $1,000; second, $500; and third through seventh, $200. All remaining entrants received $100 each. The winners have their abstracts published in this issue of Mining & Metallurgical Processing. As in past years, there were separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates.Now for the winners:Graduate winnersJoseph Halt won first place for research on the use of additives to starch binders to create iron ore pellets. Vivek Agarwal received second for working on using solvent extraction to concentrate lanthanum. Jordan Rutledge placed third for utilizing tannins to depress calcite in fluorite flotation. Fourth through seventh places were Vu Truong, Jacob McDonald, Hunter Sceats and Doug Schriner.Undergraduate winnersLaura Nugent won first place for using high-frame-rate cameras to follow bubbles as they moved from the pulp to the froth in flotation cells. Taylor Graham earned a second-place finish by researching how to acid leach low-grade manganese carbonate.Although its cliché to say everyone’s a winner, everyone can benefit from attending the MPD Student Poster contest. All the students were able to display their work to potential future employers, and industry professionals could talk to the up-and-coming engineers. Pellets are the preferred ironbearing feed for blast furnace ironmaking. Starch has been proposed as a binder because it has good adhesive properties, does not contaminate pellets and is relatively cheap. However, starch binders typically lead to weak pellets with rough surfaces, and these can cause high levels of dust within process equipment and when pellets are handled and shipped (Halt and Kawatra, 2014). Our research shows that by adding a small quantity of other additives, pellets made with starch binders become smooth and strong. The newly designed binder leads to significantly lower levels of fines when pellets are handled."

1. INTRODUCTION Empirical methods have always been important in tunneling in contrast to many other branches of engineering. Beginning in the late 19th century, when engineering entered the phase of formal modeling, this dichotomy could be seen to emerge even in the work of individuals. Culmann (1), Ritter (2) Kommerell (3) and others simultaneously were developing analytical approaches to bridge and building design and empirical approaches to tunnel design. The dichotomy remains. Empirical or simple analytical methods are used at most in the preliminary design of bridges and buildings, while they are used in all phases of tunnel design and construction. In fact, the past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in empirical methods, and with it discussion and controversy. This discussion has centered on the suitability of various methods. In some applications identical results are obtained with differing methods and in some cases radically different ones. On certain occasions the discussion has focused more on the methodological rather than empirical by taking issue with the appropriateness of particular parameters or the structure of some methods. This paper attempts to establish a basis for judging the suitability of empirical methods in tunnel design, and their applicability to particular cases. The paper makes no claim of exhaustiveness, and instead emphasizes basic requirements for application. Various methods are reviewed against this background. A detailed comparison of empirical methods and a description of their concept and background is now being prepared (4). Specifically the paper first defines empirical methods, and their purpose (Section 2), describes their structure (Section 3), and focuses on the basic requirements each must satisfy (Section 4).
