For a state whose roots are in mining, most Colorado residents probably do not realize that the industry still contributes heavily to the state’s economy. In 2005, the industry contributed, directly and indirectly, about $8 billion to the state’s economy, according to the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). It employed nearly 10,000 people at mines and support businesses. And the mining industry in Colorado is one of the highest paying occupations in the state, averaging about $80,000 a year in wages and benefits. The state’s coal mining industry produced nearly 36 Mt (40 million st) of coal in 2005, valued at $800 million, the CMA said. That was seventh in the nation. And Colorado’s only major gold mine produced 10.2 t (329,000 oz) last year, valued at $124 million. That was third in the nation. And Phelps Dodge’s Henderson Mine produced about 12.7 kt (28 million lbs) of molybdenum, valued at $350 million. Colorado is the largest molybdenum producing state in the nation.

About 70% of the world?s total boron reserves are located in Turkey. Boron minerals are typically concentrated by attrition scrubbing followed by screening and classification to remove clay minerals and other impurities. These wet concentration methods, however, result in a considerable amount of accumulated tailings in large tailings dams. The tailings are approximately 28% solids and contain 14% B2O3. Problems caused by these tailings can be minimized by employing dry beneficiation techniques involving heat treatment. This method has been successfully tested on laboratory and pilot scales. During heat treatment, borax undergoes expansion in volume. The amount of expansion is dependent on the particle size, temperature and duration of heat treatment. Because the optimum temperature and the duration of the heat treatment are not well defined, the boron ore acts as a calcined clay mineral and is discarded along with the gangue. It is important to predict such parameters using mathematical formulations. Thus, a mathematical model is used to predict the required temperature and duration period prior to heat treatment. In the experimental study presented here, a series of systematic thermal tests was carried out in a muffle furnace. Two variables, temperature and time, were studied in a response surface design. A quadratic regression model was chosen and regression coefficients were calculated. Using a regression equation, the volume expansion of the particles in various circumstances can be predicted. The mathematical test results are then correlated with the experimental results to relate the optimum expansion of borax with heating time and temperature and with borax grades and recoveries.

They are gone now. Gone like that long ago generation that gave them birth. The Homestake Mine, nestled in the northern Black Hills, closed in 2001 after 125 years, the longest run of any major American gold mine. The Homestake Mining Co., which guided its destiny for those many years, is gone too. It merged with Barrick Gold. The Hearst family, which guided the early destiny of both, has long since gone beyond its mining heritage and into the national and even international spotlight. The mine and the company passed from the scene with as little fanfare as heralded their birth, amid the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. They both grew into American mining legends, as did the town they sired and nurtured, Lead. In a real sense, the mine and the company symbolized one of the last links to a vanished world and a mining era.

The 20th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, AZ, on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker is J. David Lowell, one of the preeminent exploration geologists of the past 30 years. Among his most recent discoveries is the world-class Pierina gold deposit in Peru, currently owned and operated by Barrick Gold. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct Howard Allen Twitty, Sr., and Bernhardt Rohe. Twitty was a respected public lands attorney. He made significant contributions to the mining industry by representing several major companies in many court cases. He was also the author of numerous papers on mining law. Rohe was managing director of Peñoles. In that position, he helped guide the Mexican mining company for its growth into the international mining company that it is today.

As the 2009 George Fox Conference neared its conclusion, Arthur Silber, project chief of the Mass Transit Tunnel (MTT) project was able to pull away from the constant buzzing of his Blackberry long enough to give a short presentation and a significant piece of news to the record 318 attendees at the Graduate Center, City University of New York regarding the MTT project. ?As the former administration (The Bush administration) was leaving office, we were told that Congress was notified of the FTA?a (Federal Transit Authority?s) intent to issue final design construction approval to us,? Silber said of recent advancements concerning the $7.2-billion dollar project. It will add passenger rail service from New Jersey to New York City as part of the Access to the Region?s Core project in the form of the Trans Hudson Express Tunnel (THE tunnel). ?That 10-day waiting period ended yesterday (Jan. 26).? In days leading up the Fox Conference, those involved in the tunneling industry, and the MTT in particular, had a lot to be optimistic about. The MTT received environ-mental approval on Jan. 14 (see page 9) and, with the acceptance of the final design, the multi-billion dollar project moved that much closer to a ground-breaking ceremony. So close, in fact, that before leaving his office for the conference, Silber posted the contract documents and plans for the Manhattan Tunnel project online at www.arctunnel.com (an indepth look at the project from Silber is on page 22). While many were interested in the progress of the project, Silber also spoke about the new plans for the cavern complex at the New York Penn Station expansion. The original plans called for two lines that would come into a large cavern complex with a north and south cavern to access the trains. After numerous core samples were taken from the streets of Manhattan, it was deter-mined that this design was not feasible and changes were made that will include a deeper cavern under Sixth Avenue, with 14-m (45-ft) of cover with a 30-m (96-ft) wide cavern that resides entirely under 34th Street. The cavern was also moved 20 m (60 ft) to the west to remain at least 61 m (200 ft) away from New York City Water Tunnel #1. The new design will include three-over-three track arrangement. The mezzanine will be 46 m (150 ft) below street level at 8th Ave, Silber said.

Online education is not new. During the last decade, it has reached the stage where many universities offer a variety of courses, degrees and programs without any associated residency requirements. The most successful of the online universities, University of Phoenix, offers hundreds of accredited programs for close to 100,000 students throughout the world (www.phoenix.edu). Online education is considered to be a valid equivalent to traditional, classroom-based education. It is best suited to the needs of mature students with full-time jobs and a desire to deepen their knowledge. While most of the e-business has experienced severe setbacks during the last two years, e-education shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, the number of students and institutions offering online education keeps growing. The value of e-education associated expenditures was expected to reach $300 billion in 2001 (Sanoff,2001), making it a serious and mature industry.

In 1992, a detailed inspection of the Southfield Sewer revealed a reach of approximately 0.8 kilometers in length, located directly below the freeway lanes, which was severely distressed. Failure of this section of the sewer would result in the closing of the busiest roadway in the state as well as the potential backup of sewage into homes and spilling into nearby surface waters. As such, repair of the distressed section required development of a procedure that would not jeopardize the conveyance of flow through the existing sewer nor impede travel on the overlying freeway. Based on these constraints, the DWSD and NTH team developed a repair concept that entailed the mining of a new, 3.05-meter (10-foot) diameter bypass away from the traffic lanes. The new bypass section was connected to the existing sewer, up stream and down stream of the distressed area, using a “top down” construction approach, that required only minimal freeway closures during weekend periods. This paper, prepared jointly by the Owner, Consultant and Contractor will describe existing conditions, design considerations and construction methods.

"Mining conditions in underground coal mines are dictated by the environment in which the coal seams were geologically deposited. Depositional features can change rapidly, significantly affecting mining conditions. Mine geologists understand factors affecting mining conditions, predict future conditions, and provide guidance to mine management. A case study demonstrates how a mine in Appalachia merged an understanding of depositional environments with mining conditions and drilling data to make informed decisions as the mine encountered geologic anomalies. The assessment included drilling, mapping of geologic hazards and mine productivity, and creation of a conceptual depositional model. Metallurgical coal quality and clean tons per foot served as incentives for continued advance. Mining in the south was historically favorable, with good production and advance rates. As mining advanced north, changing geologic conditions caused the upper seam split to abruptly disappear. The mine ramped down into the lower seam split. Mining in the north area encountered unfavorable conditions, including transition roof, “horsebacks,” sandstone intrusions, roof rolls, and bony floor, resulting in low rates of mining advance. The mine geologist characterized the features and created a predictive model for future mining. Most of the adverse conditions were attributed to the coal in the north being part of an incised, transgressive valley fill environment, as compared to the favorable conditions in the south resulting from a floodplain depositional environment. Geologic conditions, low productivity, and unfavorable future predicted conditions in the north ultimately resulted in mine closure and reallocation of resources to a new mine with better forecasted conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe role of a geologist in assisting coal mining operations to understand and predict the impact of varying geological factors on mining productivity is a critical one, especially when management decisions must be made about the future prospects of a mine operating in difficult conditions. Chase, Newman, and Rusnak (2006) provide a very thorough discussion of the evolution of the role of the coal mine geologist and emphasizes the importance of understanding geology with regard to mine management decisions. Using actual mining performance data to determine which geologic factors are the most critical for mining is a powerful tool for making informed mine management decisions. For example, Nelson, Mullennex, and Miller (1988) provide a case study of analyzing the geologic factors impacting productivity of a Kentucky longwall mine to predict future mining conditions for the operation. In that case, the difficult geologic factors for longwall mining were prevalent across much of the remaining permit area and, in response, mine management converted the operation from a longwall operation to a continuous miner (CM) operation to better adapt to the geology. In another example, Keim and Miller (1999) evaluated geologic conditions impacting a West Virginia longwall mine. In both examples, significant geotechnical and geological information was available, including the opportunity to compare predicted mining conditions against actual conditions as mining progressed. Numerous examples of advanced Geologic Hazard Mapping (GHM) methodologies have come from government agencies and academia. For example, development of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system (Molinda and Mark, 1994) provided a standard means for geologists and engineers to communicate quantitatively with regard to mine roof conditions, and the introduction of the Stability Mapping System (SMS) provided an efficient means for analyzing numerous factors affecting coal mine stability (Wang and Heasley, 2005)."

An economic, real-time probe drill monitoring system was developed for Metropolitan Water District’s Arrowhead Tunnels project to quantitatively evaluate ground conditions ahead of a TBM. This system digitally records hydraulic feed, rotation, and percussion pressures and calculates drill advance rates during drilling. These data are computer synthesized to develop a digital representation of the ground ahead, and the resulting “picture” of the ground is distributed to the project team to assist with tunnel construction decisions (i.e., targeting grout holes, optimizing mine-cycle lengths, and avoiding becoming stuck). The analysis and interpretation procedure has now been calibrated and refined using over 5,000 m (3 miles) of geologic face mapping data.

To exploit an underground mine effectively and safely, it is important to have a good understanding of the geotechnical behavior around underground excavations made in the mine. The aim of this study was to investigate the geotechnical behavior around a tunnel excavated in a metal mine in China at the three-dimensional level. Using the information available on lithology, geological structures, in-situ stress measurements, physical and mechanical properties of intact rock, discontinuities and interfaces between different rocks, a three-dimensional numerical model was built by using the 3DEC software to simulate a tunnel excavation under a high in-situ stress condition. Effect of the discontinuity network, possible intact rock and discontinuity parameter variability, representation of rock masses as discontinuum or continuum material and rock support system on the deformation, stress, failure zone and stability around the tunnel was investigated. A very good agreement was obtained between the collected field deformation monitoring results and the results of the conducted numerical stress analyses.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The Jollyville Transmission Main will be a 10.5-km- (6.5-mile)-long, 213-cm (84-in.) diameter rock tunnel. The tunnel will pass beneath the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, which was established to protect two endangered bird species, six endangered cave invertebrates and a threatened salamander. To address the sensitive habitat that the transmission main is to pass through, the city of Austin developed an environmental commissioning (EC) process that brought together environmental engineers and scientists, the city?s project management team and the designer team to work collaboratively to meet the city?s goals of producing a cost-effective design while also protecting the environment. This paper describes the environmental commissioning process and the benefits it brought to the project and environment through some unique environmental mitigation measures to protect this sensitive area.

A series of gas inrush events occurred during development at Grosvenor mine resulting in exposure to elevated levels of methane at the production face. A total of 22 gas inrush events occurred releasing between 15 and 130 m3 of methane during each event. The presence of an undrained seam in the immediate floor, geotechnical characteristics of the floor, and the stress environment all contributed to these dynamic floor events, while the geological characteristics of the seam below, such as the seam thickness and ash content of 75%, prevented effective pre-drainage. However, events only occurred in headings mined parallel to the principal horizontal stress direction. In cut-throughs (C/Ts) perpendicular to the principal stress direction, no events occurred, and higher methane levels were observed at the production face.

The mining industry has had three difficult years. Commodity prices have remained low and investor confidence in the industry has been shaken. And even though the Asian economy appears to be improving, it will be some time before this improvement will translate into better commodity price conditions for mining. In addition, increased environmental and social restrictions that have been placed on the industry in developed and developing countries have made mining a more difficult proposition. And, if that is not enough, the global mining industry has found itself in fierce competition with Internet businesses for investor capital. Despite that gloomy picture, more than 10,500 mining industry professionals from about 70 countries gathered in Toronto, Ontario March 5-10, 2000 for the Mining Millennium 2000 conference. This meeting was a joint effort between the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum(CIM) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).The joint meeting also featured two trade exhibitions and more than 150speakers. PDAC’s trade show attracted about 400 exhibitors and an additional 200 in the concurrent Investors’ Exchange. CIM’s exhibition attracted about 600 equipment and service companies.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country's fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world's zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Vast improvement in methods of design and analysis of the long- term stability of overburden above room and pillar mines is needed. Improved methods are vital for planning and land development and for prediction above existing, presently stable, room and pillar mines. As shown on the flow chart in [Figure 1], the assessment of the long-term stability is an integral part of the site investigation process regarding mitigation of surface damage effects. In Illinois, flat farmlands with subjacent coal reserves cover vast areas. In some of these areas high extraction of the underlying coal layer(s) may not be possible since the resulting surf ace subsidence combined with a pre-existing shallow water table would make the land too wet. Thus recovery of this coal might only be accomplished by room and pillar mining where the ground surface does not subside and the hydraulics of the overburden are not significantly affected.

Asbestos first became an issue to Minnesota?s iron industry when it was revealed that mineral fibers similar to those in Reserve Mining?s tailings were being found in drinking water for several communities that used Lake Superior as their primary water source. This discovery turned what had largely been an environmental court battle into a case concerning public health. The courts listened to much conflicting and uncertain scientific testimony on the size and distribution of the mineral fibers and on the potential health effects imposed by them. In April 1974, the plant was ordered to shut down by a federal judge but the company quickly appealed the decision. The appeals court granted a stay and ultimately ruled that the plant?s closure could not be justified based on the unknown health effects of the mineral fibers since the consequences of such an action would have immediate and severe social and economic impacts. The plant was allowed to continue operation, but ordered to abate emissions to air around the plant and to switch to a land-based tailings disposal system. Much of the scientific uncertainty and public concern over mineral fibers in Minnesota?s taconite industry remain today. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. San Martin Mine is an open pit, gold heap leach operation located approximately 70 kilometers from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. Mining operations commenced in 2000 and were completed late in 2007, while heap leaching operations continue. Reclamation was executed concurrently with operations to the extent practical. The area has distinct rainy and dry seasons and closure objectives include: prevention and mitigation of acid rock drainage, sediment and erosion control, and mitigation of visual impacts. Final closure is well underway at San Martin and this paper describes the closure processes conducted to date, problems encountered, and the subsequent lessons learned.

For more than a decade, changes have occurred each year that have improved the regulatory and business climate for mining in Alaska. These changes have taken place during Republican and Democratic governorships as well as when the state House of Representatives and Senate were controlled by either party. During some years, the changes have been relatively minor. In others, including the 2003 legislative session, the changes could only be characterized as massive. These improvements have encouraged exploration. This, in turn, has resulted in some major new discoveries. But Alaska is essentially unexplored and tremendous opportunities remain.
