Rhenium (Re) is one of the rarest elements on earth and is a designated critical element in the United States and European Union for its uses in superalloys. Unusually among critical elements, Re is produced entirely as a byproduct of molybdenite (MoS2) mining, as pure Re minerals are extremely rare. However, Re concentration in natural molybdenites varies from a few parts per trillion to tens of percent. There are few known consistent patterns and no firmly established reason for this variation, making it difficult to use molybdenite Re content as a proxy for metal grades, a vector to high grades, a clue to the geological and geochemical nature of the ore deposit, a guide to overall Re resources or for any other of the applications that have been suggested for it over time.

The Eastern Magnesia Talc Company has always had the problem of adequate storage at its various mines and mills of not only crude ore and finished product but also material in process. An opportunity arose a couple of years ago with the decision to build a new mill at West Windsor, Vermont, (Figure 1) to come as close to providing adequate space for ore and the ground talc in the new plant as money and judgement would allow. Since our engineering staff did not have the time to design and engineer the new facility, an architectural firm with complete engineering staff was retained. Our original thought was to contract all phases of the construction and installation, however, and I think this is a most important point for any small firm such as ours, we found that with good supervision we, as the contractor, could do the job faster and at a lower cost than the construction firms that bid on the work. For some 50 odd years Italian talc has had a virtual monopoly in the body powder area of the cosmetic industry. Due to the purity, superior lubricity and whiteness, naturally occurring in the talc from Italy, no talc in the Western Hemisphere could capture any but a very small part of the market. When the Italian supply was cut off during World War II, the United States' largest consumer of this talc decided that it was time to develop a domestic source of a satisfactory replacement.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss and dilution. The mischaracterization of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of, blasting can lead to significant financial losses due to ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorized as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run-of-mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorized as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have led to the development of innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at the Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures.

Cationic reagents have been utilized in mineral processing since the mid 1930's and are based upon fatty nitrogen derivatives. The initial commercial development was centered around a flotation collector capable of separating potassium chloride from sodium chloride - potash flotation. The first commercial sale for Akzo, known then as Amour and Company, was realized in the summer of 1940 to a potash producer in Carlsbad, New Mexico for the flotation of potash. The success of the potash flotation collector led to the development of other cationic mineral processing reagents. Flotation collectors for iron ore, phosphate, calcium carbonate, silica sand, feldspar, and other silicates materialized into a large commercial business. Another area that realized commercial success was the development and use of anticaking/antidusting reagents for hygroscopic salts, fertilizer mixes, and granular fertilizers. A more recent development has found use in the trona industry as a defoamer and crystal growth modifier during the crystallization of sodium carbonate liquors. A review of cationic reagent chemistry and applications will be given and the potential for new application areas will be explored.

Selective flocculation enables the production of high-brightness kaolin products from kaolin ore once considered too poor in quality for beneficiation into paper-coating pigments. Anatase, Ti(1-X)FeXO2, with X = 0 to 0.05, is a common iron-bearing impurity in sedimentary kaolin that can be unresponsive to kaolin beneficiation processes, such as magnetic separation, due to its extremely fine particle size (<0.3 µm), or chemical bleaching, because of its chemical stability. Described here are selective flocculation technologies that separate anatase by flocculating anatase or flocculating kaolinite from dispersed slurries. Applying the advances in the chemical and mechanical dispersion of ultrafine particles and the selective aggregation of kaolinite or anatase particles have resulted in the selective flocculation processes practiced today that have increased process recoveries from those technologies practiced beginning in the 1960s.

Various modeling techniques are available for describing ore deposits on the computer. Multiple seam coal deposits can be quite successfully modeled by using the variable block modeling method. In essence, this type of model provides an efficient method for storing the relevant data required for calculating ore reserves and for performing the mine planning. The main advantages of the variable block model over other methods for modeling irregular block or tabular deposits are: 1) The amount of data that has to be stored is minimal, i.e., the most efficient use of computer space is made since only the pertinent seam and topographic geometries need to be stored. 2) The computer logic necessary for calculating ore reserves and performing mine sequencing is relatively simple as compared to the logic that would be required for the three-dimensional block model. 3) A variable block model can be created either by starting from raw drill-hole data or by digitizing cross sections that contain the geologic interpretations. 4) Updating individual or multiple blocks can be performed with relative ease. 5) Display of the model is relatively inexpensive and easy to perform. The objective of this chapter is to describe a developed procedure as used in applying the variable block model to a specific multiple seam coal deposit. The general sequence of operations includes: (1) develop the computer model, (2) design the open-pit limits, (3) compute reserves, and (4) develop a long-range mining plan. The programs developed for this application are an expansion of MINTEC&apos;s MEDSYSTEM software. It should be noted that this is just one of many possible applications of the developed variable block model.

World trade has increased significantly during the last quarter century. However, a new rational for protectionism is emerging which argues for the restriction of trade as a means of preserving and protecting the environment. Fearing lower environmental standards in the Third World, environmentalists are calling for new trade barriers between the developed countries and the developing countries to combat what they see as "eco-dumping." The "greening" of protectionism and the merging of environmental standards into international trade agreements could fundamentally change the world trading system as well as seriously impact the availability of raw materials to provide for the needs of the peoples in both the developing and the developed worlds. This discussion will deal with the agreements and regulations that promise to influence the trans boundary shipment and recycling of scrap metals and wastes containing metals and their projected impact on world trade and metal prices. Emphasis will be placed on the Base1 Convention, whose restrictions concerning trans boundary shipment of scrap metal and metal-containing wastes for recycling took effect on December 31, 1997.

Increasing environmental awareness leads to a reflection on the consequences of a non-appropriate use of mining resources. In this sense the determination of the mining requirements for the building industry is the necessary prerequisite to activate planning in mining according to the principles of environmental sustainability. Experience shows that there is a relationship between the production of buildings in relation to the shape of the city and the resulting demand for minerals. The increasingly urgent demand for maintenance and restructuring by existing buildings will stretch further the demand for minerals with an excessive, no longer sustainable withdrawal, which will lead to focussing greater attention on environmental policies oriented to the use of alternative materials including materials from recycling. It is pointed out moreover that the joint action of land use planning and mining planning leads to interesting applications that have significant repercussions on the environment.

Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. Based on thermodynamic analysis, the present work discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extraction and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80 percent were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1 percent, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature.

Literally thousands of new flotation agents, both collectors and modifiers, have been proposed for sulfide and non-sulfide flotation over the past six decades since the beginning of the use of soluble surfactants in flotation. In stark contrast, the number of flotation agents used in practice is small. Xanthates and fatly acids, along with a few well-recognized modifiers, dominate the industry. Three major questions will then arise: a) are there truly specific needs in the industry that call for chemistries that are different from those used currently ? b) if yes, given the track record in the industry, what is the likelihood that such different chemistries will ever be used and to what extent ? and c) is more research into developing new chemistries necessary ? A critical assessment of flotation agents in general is made in this paper to provide answers to these questions and to identify the major factors that are responsible for the large disparity that exists between flotation reagent research and commercial usage.

Limestone resources for industrial, constructional, and agricultural uses occur on the surface and at minable depths in several areas along the Ohio River and its navigable tributaries in Kentucky. Operable thicknesses of high-calcium and high-carbonate limestones suitable for use in cement and lime production, steel manufacture, environmental-control measures, and other special uses are documented in Ordovician and Mississippian formations by analysis of 0.3-meter (foot-by-foot) samples. Active and potential mine and quarry sites afford access to water transportation and proximity to a number of industrial and metropolitan centers. Geologic factors affecting the distribution of deposits include the Cincinnati arch, regional dip into the Appalachian and Eastern Interior basins, complex faulting in and near the Western Kentucky fluorspar mining district, and late Paleozoic erosional unconformities in northeastern Kentucky.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The American Concrete Institute defines shotcrete as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as gunite, which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this chapter. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, then chief engineer of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) George Rice developed the gunite process for underground test work at the USBM facility at Bruceton, PA. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto tunnel in California. The greatest development was in Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Initially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately after the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the new Austrian tunnel method or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the US reliance on wood or steel supports in main-line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to accept the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Shotcrete is a relatively new material for use in underground support systems. Consequently, experienced miners are not always available who are capable of applying the material effectively. Shotcrete, particularly in the small cross sections typical of mine shafts or haulageways, is applied in cramped quarters under less than ideal conditions. Adequate lighting should be made available. The surface should be clean and free of running or dripping water. It may be necessary to collect flowing water in plastic pipes or water collection devices. Any dry cement dust from previous shotcrete applications should be washed from the surface in order to assure a good bond. The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) while shooting test panels at the Cunningham tunnel in 1974, found that experienced shotcrete operators were able to obtain up to three times greater compressive strengths than were obtained by unskilled operators using the same equipment and shotcrete mix. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Since sodium and potassium hydroxide, as well as other moderately toxic compounds, are often contained in shotcrete (particularly where accelerators are used), safety precautions must be taken to prevent skin and respiratory irritation. Nozzlemen and helpers are required to wear gloves, protective clothing, and ventilation hoods with a filtered air supply. Respirators approved by USBM, equipped with chemical filters that will not pass the caustic mists, may be permitted in lieu of hoods if goggles or safety glasses are worn. Protective ointments are available to reduce skin irritation. All air and shotcrete feed hoses should be equipped with safety-type couplings and secured with safety chains at each coupling to prevent whipping in the event of a hose or coupling failure. Some environmental effects can take place down-stream from the development face being supported. The accelerator compounds, as well as the portland cement used in the shotcrete, will be found in the rebound material which falls to the invert of the heading. Since these compounds may be leached from the rebound material and carried by the drainage system, it may be necessary to install neutralizing or other water treatment facilities. Investigations may find that the final reaction with other compounds being leached from the mining operations may result in a more or less environmentally acceptable end product. USES OF SHOTCRETE General Uses Shotcrete, as a combination of cement, aggregate, and accelerator, is utilized for underground openings such as shafts, adits, haulageways, and service chambers for the following general purposes : (1) primary sup¬port; (2) final lining; (3) protective covering for excavated surfaces that are altered when exposed to air (the protective covering may be of a temporary or final nature); (4) protective covering for steel or wooden supports, rockbolts and rockbolt plates, heads, nuts, and other mats, including wire fabric, used to prevent rock-falls; and (5) as a lagging material in place of timber, steel, or concrete between steel or wooden supports. These applications can be grouped into three general use categories: shotcrete used as a rock sealant, shotcrete used as a safety measure, and shotcrete used as a structural support. Use as a Rock Sealant Thin applications of shotcrete can reduce or prevent slaking of shales or other rocks that are altered when exposed to the wetting and drying cycles created by mine ventilation circuits. While shotcrete may be effective in preventing such rock alteration, at the present time it is not as economical or efficient as other commercial sealants. However, if the sealant property can be incorporated into the structural support capability, the added contribution is usually helpful. Ion exchange resin processes are receiving renewed attention in the mining industry for recovery;, of metals from solution. This interest has been inspired by the development of continuous countercurrent ion; exchange systems (CCIX) which are of much lower cost than the original, fixed bed contactor processes. With the countercurrent systems and new developments to process or upgrade the eluate product, ion exchange can now compete successfully with solvent extraction for treatment of uranium ores. The low concentration of U308 obtained in the CCIX strong eluate is generally upgraded by solvent extraction methods in sulfuric acid systems. Resin loadings of up to 120 grams per liter of U308, however, have been produced experimentally by recycling of eluate (HIM-IX process) and further developments may be expected in the near future. New developments in resin technology are bringing forth products of greater strength, loading capacity, selectivity and density. Densities up, to 1.35 spgr have been claimed by some suppliers. The process is not a new one and has taken years to advance to the present state of development. The earliest system to gain widespread acceptance was the resin-in-pulp system applied to uranium recovery. Ion exchange, however, later lost acceptance in favor of solvent extraction in the 1960&apos;s due to problems in resin degradation, resin contamination and resin-pulp separation, in addition to the development of improved solvent extraction reagents and techniques. The resin-in-pulp system continues to have application on high clay ores and has advanced in design. A number of other continuous ion exchange systems were also tried but never gained continued acceptance. In the current resurgence period the CCIX systems to gain acceptance were the Utah and Chem-Sep (Higgins Loop) systems. These processes are relatively simple in concept although require sophisticated controls. Fixed bed columns have also been designed into multistage systems in countercurrent operation but are not discussed in this paper. These systems remain competitive today for many applications. The most recent advancements however have been in the multistage contactors from,, which three are in current acceptance. These are the Himsley, Porter, and NIM systems. All industrial applications of these systems are relatively new, although pilot plant and in-plant development has been in progress over the last decade. Fur36ther developments should be expected in the near future.

Spartan Spatial Random Fields (SSRF?s) provide a new geostatistical framework (Hristopulos, 2003) with applications targeting environmental risk assessment and natural resources estimation. SSRF?s have the ability to incorporate constraints based on physical laws in the statistical description and have proved to be computationally fast in the analysis of synthetic data sets. This paper presents an application of a specific SSRF model and a new local-error spatial estimator (Hristopulos, 2005) in the mapping of environmental pollutants using a real data set. A detailed comparison of the local SSRF estimator with a classical kriging method is presented. It is shown that the SSRF approach provides a competitive alternative for spatial estimation.

Finnish mining traditions date back 400 years. The country was then one of Europe&apos;s major iron producers. Most of the mines in current operation, however, were started during the last 20 to 30 years. The Finnish mining industry must make do with limited resources. Deposits are usually low grade and small in size. Open-pit methods are used where possible. But thin ore bodies and harsh winters can impose severe restrictions. Underground mining is often the only option. Despite these handicaps, Finnish metal miners produce copper, nickel, zinc, vanadium, iron ore, cobalt, and ferrochrome. Ironically, the success of Finnish mining is rooted in a crisis the industry faced several decades ago. Mining costs were rising. High grade mineral deposits were nearly exhausted. It was vital that Finland develop new mining machinery and methods that afforded higher productivity. Cooperation between the Finnish mining industry and its equipment manufacturers was good. Partly as a result, the Finnish mining industry has turned itself into one of the most modern and efficient in the world. The Finns did this while continuing to meet the stringent safety and environmental requirements in force in the Nordic countries. Today, the share of domestic raw materials used by the Finnish metallurgical industry is decreasing. So the country increasingly depends on imports of ores and concentrates. To better provide these imports, Finnish mining companies have expanded their foreign operations. And, while importing raw materials, the mining industry has been exporting its technological and equipment know-how and expertise. Mining methods Conventional mining methods and machinery are used in surface mines. Drilling is the exception. It is done with Tamrock hydraulic track drills and 100 to 150 mm-diam (4 to 6-in.-diam) drill holes. Pumpable slurry explosives are used in larger open pits. Underground, sublevel stoping with open stopes is the most common mining method. It accounts for about 80% of all underground stoping. The main benefits of this method are low production costs, high mechanization, and easy control. The best productivity figures exceed 10 t (11 st) per man-hour, including all mining personnel. The development of cable bolting has made it possible to use sublevel open stoping even in relatively weak rock. Cut-and-fill methods, such as concrete-pillar stoping, inclined-wall stoping, and traditional cut-and-fill have also been used, combined with sublevel caving and room-and-pillar methods, according to local demands. Various fill materials and stabilization components have been investigated and tested for cut-and-fill methods. Sublevel open stopes are often later filled, to stabilize the surface or to allow pillar recovery.

A multimine mineral value chain (MVC) consists of multiple mines in the upstream supplying raw materials to multiple destinations in the downstream. The short-term mine production scheduling problem of a multimine MVC aims to determine the optimal extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively to meet the quality and quantity requirements of all the processing plants in each period, subject to all relevant technical and operational constraints of the mining system. It is carried out at shorter scales of days/weeks/months under the purview of long-term production scheduling. An optimal short-term production schedule for MVC involving multiple mines that share the same infrastructure (processing units, stockpiles and waste dumps) requires coordination across the network of mines. Optimizing the short-term production schedules independently at each mine fails to capture the benefit of collaboratively generating schedules for all the mines, resulting in suboptimal schedules. Additionally, in short-term production scheduling, the operations are modeled in greater detail with additional decision variables and constraints to model the more complex multimine MVC situations. This makes the large-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. This work presents a customized genetic algorithm (GA)-based heuristic approach to obtain near-optimal solutions to the industrial-scale instances of the short-term production scheduling problem of multimine MVC within a reasonable computation time.

For new coal-fired power plants, federal regulations require that emissions of sulfur dioxide be limited to 1.2 pounds for every million BTU&apos;S burned. This is equivalent to coal with a sulfur content of roughly 0.7 percent for Eastern bituminous coals and roughly 0.6 percent for Western sub-bituminous coals. The states and their political subdivisions are free to apply more stringent standards and to develop implementation plans covering existing and new units. Most Western-sub-bituminous coals contain less than 1% sulfur and hence their use, in many cases, will allow a utility to meet the regulations. However, there are problems in using such coals in furnaces designed for Eastern bituminous coals, and furthermore it will take many years to open mines and provide transportation facilities to utilities which are now burning coals with a higher sulfur content. Moreover, pending federal legislation would outlaw strip mining on land to which the federal government owns the mining rights. Those utilities who, for one reason or another, intend to continue burning Eastern bituminous coals with sulfur contents in excess of 1 percent are faced with removing SO2 from the stack gases. The alternative of utilizing coal gasification where the sulfur is removed prior to burning in a power plant is still in the early stages of development. Therefore, a large number of processes are under development for SO2 control.

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950&apos;s and 1960&apos;s, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines avail-able today have unit volumes in the range of 38.2 to 43.9 M3 (1,350 to 1,550 cft). Designs for mechanical flotation cells of unit volumes as large as 70.8 m3 (2500 cft) are available. The development of these "giant" flotation machines has been and continues to be motivated by the increasingly critical forces of higher energy and capital costs, decreasing ore grades, and lower (real) prices for the products. As an expansion of a previous publication, this paper reports the further development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the develop¬ment of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which s is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.
