Bentonite is one of the main players in the stability of drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution significantly affect drilling mud’s rheological properties. Although the Specifications for Drilling Fluids Materials report on Oil Companies Material Association (OCMA)-grade bentonite states that the API recommended powder having 2.5 percent mass fraction as the maximum value of residue of diameter greater than 75 μm, there is no other information on the specific size distribution for API bentonite. It was found that API bentonite has a specific size distribution with specific mixing weights. It is important to investigate why that mixture represents the optimum properties of drilling mud and how each individual size fraction has a specific function in the mixture. To clarify the effect of individual size as well as the collective effect of the size distribution, API bentonite was classified into different size fractions, with each tested separately for controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness and packing density.

A glance at the accompanying table and a review of contributors' comments suggest that the industrial minerals industry is recovering from the recession of the past few years. Actually, the total value of nonmetal production in 1983 was $15.5 billion, up 10% over 1982. Nonmetallics still have not recovered to 1981's high of $25.3 billion, but at least it is on the way up. It is significant that cement (+20%), clays (+13%), gypsum (+16%), sand and gravel (+12%), sodium carbonate (+7%), and crushed stone (+11%) are up. These commodities are largely used in the housing and construction industries. Raw steel and steel mill products, iron ore production and castings, and purchased scrap are showing improvement and increased in value last year. They are, however, still not up to the high of 1981. These industries consume considerable amounts of many industrial minerals, such as limestone, dolomite, fluorspar as fluxes, and many types of refractories.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

Stage open stope mining (SOSM) maintains the stability of excavation openings by leaving a large number of rib pillars. Affected by the strong unloading due to stage mining and the low width-to-height (w/h) ratio of the pillars remaining, large-scale destabilization disasters of rib pillars or excavation openings easily occur when the distribution of ground stress or the size of rib pillars is unreasonable. In view of these problems, a physical SOSM model test was carried out based on an underground metal mine in the city of Chifeng in China, revealing the deformation and failure characteristics of the SOSM pillar group by overloading.

The handleability monitor has been specifically designed to provide a simple, rapid and on-site assessment of the whole or part consignment of a coal blend in its ‘as-received’ condition. Evaluation has been carried out at a number of coal-handling plants, on both metallurgical and power station coals from a variety of sources world-wide. The results which are used to predict which coals could routinely pass through a handling plant at line capacity, without causing blockage or delay, have also been correlated with moisture, ash and size analyses of the coal to develop a predictive model of handleability.

The intensive use of computers for mineral application at Serrana's phosphate mine in Jacupiranga, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, began in the late seventies. The early hardware and software available are described in sufficient detail to allow comparisons between that solution and the new one, based on a personal computer and a new software package - PC MINE SYSTEM from GEMCOM SERVICES INC - that provides full color graphics capabilities plus mine design and planning tools. The process needed for adaptation to the new technology' and its impact on SERRANA S.A. DE MINERACAO are described. Finally, future enhancements to the System and mine control and planning are focused.

The United States has long been recognized for its ability to marshall the many tools of its scientists and engineers to meet national threats or crises. Two major World Wars, the Dust Bowl, the Soviet Missile threat, Sputnik, and more recently the Energy Crisis have stimulated military weapons development, massive land reclamation and water management programs, NASA, and the Space Program, Project Independence, and soon a new agency, the Energy Research and Development Administration. While our record of successful responses to these major national concerns lends support to the expectation that we will succeed in dealing with the current energy problem and potential future crises as well, the crisis mode of response is becoming increasingly wasteful of funds and human and natural resources. This waste, while always of a concern, is a more important factor than previously because of the accelerating pace at which the world has been shrinking, relatively, in comparison to its human population and that population's increasing demand for resources, both renewable and nonrenewable. If present growth patterns continue, in the year 2000 there will be two people to feed, clothe, house, and satisfy for every one person that existed in 1970. On a finite planet, with finite land areas, limited resources, and only partial understanding of the means by which future problems can be addressed, one of the major threats to mankind will be scarcity and one of our major challenges will be better management of our resources. The Bureau of Mines has studied the mechanism of shear-flocculation of silica with stearic acid. At pH 6 and 12, shear-flocculation of silica was not observed with up to 10-4M (5 lb/st) stearic acid. However, in the presence of 0.1 M NaCl at pH 6, shear-flocculation was observed at stearic acid concentrations 10-4 M (5 lb/st). Adsorption of stearic acid on silica was studied using stearic acids spin-labelled with a doxyl group. The presence of the spin-labelling group did not greatly affect the shear-flocculation properties of stearic acid. Adsorption of labelled stearic acid on silica was measured as a function of surfactant concentration with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC). The GC results indicate the stearic acid was predominately adsorbed on the surface at concentrations above 10-4 M. From the EPR spectra, the formation of aggregates of stearic acid was apparent at concentrations of approximately 10-414 (5 lb/st). The results are discussed in terms of a possible mechanism for shear-flocculation.

All underground operations have limiting factors that influence overall profitability. Hoisting, hauling, available headings, labor, milling capacity and other factors limit how much material can be removed from an underground mine. Consequently, when mines use limited labor to handle the additional rock from overbreak and to perform extra ground support tasks, productive activity is replaced by nonproductive work. Mining economics are further penalized when overbreak causes dilution of ore grades. This paper reviews the organizational systems that mines have been using to create environments that foster the creation of successful overbreak-control programs. Actual case histories document the various quality-improvement techniques, worker incentives and practical project-management systems used by these mines. A brief review of controlled-blasting technology sources and overbreak-measurement tools is also included.

"INTRODUCTION The need for a new road crossing at Silvertown is the result of three key drivers:- •,Severe congestion and delay at the Blackwall Tunnel and surrounding road network; •,A lack of network resilience and reliability resulting from a lack of alternative road crossings in east London and the impacts of unplanned closures; and •,The need to support substantial economic development in east and south-east London (jobs and homes) These drivers directly informed the main objectives for a road-based river-crossing solution. The traffic-related problems at Blackwall Tunnel are long-standing and before Transport for London (TfL) assumed control for the strategic road network in London in 2000 the Department for Transport (formerly Dept of Transport) had investigated various relief options including a third tunnel bore and new bridge. This resulted in a new crossing alignment being safeguarded (by direction of the Secretary of State for Transport) and this was refreshed in 2001 in favor of TfL. In recent years (since 2009) TfL as part of the East London River Crossings Programme has undertaken detailed optioneering and feasibility work to address the above ‘need’. This led to the conclusion that a new road tunnel would offer the best solution in preference to bridge, ferry or demand management options. In 2012, in response to a formal request by the Mayor of London, the Secretary of State for Transport confirmed a new road crossing at Silvertown as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) by Section 35 direction under the Planning Act 2008. This NSIP designation meant that TfL as scheme promoter must comply with the National Rail and Road Networks National Policy Statement (NNNPS) and must seek the necessary powers to build and operate the crossing by means of a Development Consent Order (DCO) under the Planning Act 2008."

Modern mining operations are increasingly affected by complex economic factors. Broad and rapid fluctuations in metal prices, rising operating costs, socio-political trends and the inherent technical difficulties encountered in most operations, all can combine to quickly change once-profitable ventures into money-losing propositions. Accurate knowledge of metal inventories during all phases of an operation has become essential to wise management decision-making. This paper reviews key elements of metallurgical accounting: sampling theory, measurement technology and computerized data adjustment. Application of current technology to the reconciliation of a hypothetical operation is discussed.

Oil production rate and ultimate primary recovery from a heavy or viscous oil reservoir is usually limited to a very small fraction of the original oil in place. Typically, normal production rate is in the range of up to 10 barrels per day and expected ultimate cumulative production is up to 10% of in place values. Heavy oil reserves are not all alike. The physical properties of the rock, the liquid hydrocarbons, and depths of the deposits are so different that each reservoir poses a unique enhanced oil recovery problem. In some reservoirs thermal recovery by internal heat generation or external heat injection has been successfully exploited. In other reservoirs, mining the oil bearing formation for oil recovery by surface processing has been practiced. This paper will present an overview of the heavy oil recovery state of the art and discuss the critical factors leading to the decision for selection of a conventional hydrocarbon recovery or mining and extraction processes.

The most important type of potash ores, sylvinite, contains sylvite, halite and a small percentage of insoluble gangue [sulfates (anhydrite), carbonates (dolomite), and clay minerals]. Primary normal long-chain amines are exlusively utilized to float sylvite from halite, but since mines are also adsorbed by insoluble slimes, the process requires prior desliming. This is carried out either by mechanical means, or by flotation of slimes and blocking off the adsorption centers on clays with the use of polyelectrolytes. Fractional crystallization is employed to produce fertilizer grade KC1 from disseminated ores with a high content of slimes. An extender oil is needed in addition to mine to float coarse sylvite fractions. The process is carried out in a saturated brine at mine concentrations exceeding the solubility limit and is strongly affected by temperature fluctuations. All these important features, which make this process differ from a conventional flotation, result from a high electrolyte concentration.

Flotation tests were carried out on six coal samples of different rank as well as their oxidized samples. A mixture of diesel oil and alcohols was used in these tests. Surface oxidation caused a distinct decrease during flotation recovery with some improvement in the grade. The reduction in the recovery increased with increasing concentration of the oxidizing agent. The floatability of low rank coals was affected by oxidation to a higher degree than the floatability of medium and high rank coals. The recovery-size curves of oxidized samples were similar in shape to the recovery-size curves of non-oxidized coals.

INTRODUCTION Friction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Sets,tm* have been under development since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977 and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. The present rate of useage is near 3 1/2 million units per year which is approximately 50 per cent of all roof fixtures used in the United States metal mining industry. With the passing of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, many utilities are opting to switch to lower sulfur coal to meet new SO2 emissions requirements. This lower sulfur coal may be from new suppliers or it may be from current suppliers that modify existing cleaning plants or build new plants to produce this higher quality coal. New, sophisticated coal cleaning simulators are useful tools for optimizing cod cleaning circuit operating parameters to maximize the production of clean coal that meets more stringent specifications for SO2 emissions potential. The examples in this paper were developed using the Coal Cleaning Simulator (CCS), running under ASPEN PLUS™, that was developed under a Department of Energy project cosponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute. With advanced sensitivity analysis and optimization features, CCS allows a quick, efficient, cost-effective review of coal cleaning plant performance to meet current production goals and to plan future changes in plant operating parameters or circuitry configurations.

Two basic types of subsidence occur in Illinois: pit and sag / trough. Pits develop over mines less than 165 feet deep and where relatively incompetent strata are found over the mines. Sag subsidence is found over mines as shallow as 75 feet and more generally over mines of greater depths. The percentage of subsidence and angles of draw associated with sag subsidence appear to be controlled by the rock properties at each specific site. The percentage of subsidence and angles of draw are smaller where the sites are not affected by geologic structures. An investigation to determine if a time factor based on the time interval from the date of mining to the subsidence events has shown that simple correlations with time, percent extraction, average pillar stresses, and pillar dimensions is not evident in Illinois.

Japan has produced 14-16 million tons of coal per year in the past several years. About half of the production comes from eight coal mines in the Ishikari coal field, Hokkaido. Most of the gassy coal mines are in this field and the average mining depth of these coal mines has already attained about 700 m from the surface. Therefore, most of the coal mines have suffered from occurrences of coal and gas outbursts. To prevent outbursts and to reduce ventilation air, gas drainage has been carried out at all of these coal mines and these have had successful results. However, the methods of gas drainage differ from mine to mine. In this report, an outline of the main methods of gas drainage are described.

A biologically assisted ferric iron leaching system was evaluated for in situ recovery of three copper sulfide oresfrorm northern Michigan. Laboratory scale bacterially assisted ferric sulfate leaching tests were run on the three ores. A T. ferrooxidans strain was found that could be adapted to copper in solutions at concentrations as high as 20 g/L. Column leaching of 4.5 to 2 mm (-4 +I0 mesh) material yielded extractions of 80-90% copper from one ore and 70 and 60% from the other ores. The highest copper extractions were from the Mount Bohemia ore deposits located in the Keweenaw Peninsula, which have fracture controlled chalcocite mineralization. The Bohemia ores are apparently well-suited for in situ solution mining.
