GENERAL DESCRIPTION Homestake Mining Co.'s operations are at Lead, SD. Production from the various methods used are: 1 155 753 t/a (1,274,000 stpy) by open cut-and-fill, 68 039 t/a (75,000 stpy) by square set cut-and-fill, 144242 t/a (159,000 stpy) by shrinkage stoping, 107 048 t/ a (118,000 stpy) by blasthole stoping, and 67 132 t/a (74,000 stpy) in development work for a total of 1 542 214 t/a (1,700,000 stpy). Mining takes place from the 616-m (2000-ft) level to the 2073-m (6800 ft) level (Fig. 1). The average travel time to the stope is 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip of Ore Body Six major ledges varying from 914 m (3000 ft) long by 228.6 m (750 ft) wide to 305 m (1000 ft) long by 122 m (400 ft) wide are mined. Within these ledges are irregular-shaped areas of varying sizes. These ledges dip at approximately 1.2 rad (70°) to the east and plunge to the south from 0.26 to 1.57 rad (15° to 90°). Ground Conditions The ore is cummingtonite (chlorite schist) which is very competent except for major bedding planes and fracture patterns. The footwall is a slate but because of the dip presents very few problems. The hanging wall is also a slate which because of the dip and bedding is very weak and requires considerable rockbolting. No problem has been encountered with rock bursts to a depth of 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore Value The ore values vary somewhat from ledge to ledge, but the average ore delivered to the mill is approxi¬mately 6.2 g (0.2 oz) of gold per ton. A small amount of silver is the only byproduct of this operation. Annual production of gold is approximately 10 575 183 g (340,000 troy oz). Production Requirements The mine has a mill capacity of approximately 1 723 651 t (1,900,000 st) but because of several fac¬tors (manpower, depth, etc.) this mill capacity has not been attainable for the past several years.

A massive roof fall occurred in a small room-and-pillar coal mine. The roof falls occurred under a barrier pillar in a closed coal mine located a short distance above the active mine. The extensive fractures connected the active mine with the old mine, turning them into a “combined mine.” Since completely sealing off the roof fall area is prohibitively expensive for the mine, ventilating the connected old mine became the only option. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to understand the atmospheric condition in the old mine and to find an efficient way to ventilate the “combined mine.” A set of studies involving geology, gas content, pillar stability and mine subsidence were performed to explore whether the closed mine is filled with an explosive air-methane mixture. The air quantity measurement data were used to determine the resistance of the air path formed through the fractured zone. Observations and measurements made from a tour to the underground and mine surface enabled the formulation of simple but effective ways to ventilate the old mine. The ventilation network analysis also suggested methods of control, so that sufficient ventilation air can be directed to the two parts of the old mine.

When discussing stock market investments, a company's performance is important. But so is the financial community's perception of that performance. To be sure, a good product or service, coupled with sound manage¬ment, remains important but is no longer enough. How stock analysts view a company's performance has become equally important. A major task of a mining company's investor relations officer, then, is to build and maintain a positive perception of the company to mining analysts throughout the world. That's a tough assignment in any market. The subject here, though, is gold. And, with its weakened price, gold companies must work harder to convince analysts their company is still a good investment. The analyst, on the other hand, must see through the corporate hype and decide whether it's worth recommending to clients as an investment. No simple task, either. Annual reports, 10-K forms, and quarterly reports only tell part of the mining company's story. Site visits, complete with discussions (sometimes interrogations) with a mine's principals, oftentimes tell an analyst more about a company's investment potential than the annual or quarterly report. So it was that three of the nation's major gold companies arranged a three-day tour of their gold operations in Nevada for a group of 22 analysts and a pair of mining industry scribes. The analysts represented investment houses the US, Canada, and England. The host companies and mines visited included FMC Gold's Paradise Peak mine, Amax Gold's Sleeper and Wind Mountain mines, and Battle Mountain Gold's Surprise and Fortitude mines.

A surface charge sensor has been developed that responds to changes in the double layer properties of colloidal silica during the cationic flotation of silica from taconite ores. Sensor design allows for the measurement of two aspects of the electrical double layer surrounding all solids immersed in ionic solutions. One aspect responds to a flow induced change in the double layer properties of a solid. The other is a function of the chemical composition of the aqueous phase. Evaluation of sensor performance during froth flotation experiments has been encouraging. Process monitoring capabilities are indicated.

Mineral activity in Ontario represents an annual production in excess of $4 billion. The Ontario government encourages the mining industry to undertake mineral development through grant programs and incentives offered by mineral resource taxation. Computers are playing an increasingly important role in improving productivity in the administration of incentive programs and the Mining Tax Act in Ontario. This has meant speedier processing of grant applications and tax returns which is resulting in a streamlined approach to incentives and taxation in Ontario. The use of computers has resulted in significant contributions to key areas of concern such as assessment of mining tax returns, analysis of the changes, if any, to the Mining Tax Act and modeling of the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program (OMEP). Implementation of state-of-the-art technology such as Local Area Networks (LAN's), fourth generation languages and integrated micro-mainframe information processing has resulted in improved productivity as well as lower costs. As a result, the respective services provided to the mineral industry by these two programs are now delivered in an efficient and cost-effective manner utilizing the latest available computer technology.

The west central upper Peninsula of Michigan contains a large resource of graphitic slate. The slate has potential industrial use as a substitute for shale currently used in the production of portland cement. Some of the unweathered slate, however, has a high concentration of pyritic sulfur which can create emission problems when processed in a kiln. A low cost method to reduce the sulfur content of the slate through the optimization of pyrite oxidation in a bio-heap leaching operation was investigated.

Most people, when Borates are mentioned, mentally visualize the famous twenty mule team (really eighteen mules and two horses), trudging across the Mojave Desert or "she burns green Rosie, we are rich." Actually, however, the first use of borax was prior to Babylonian times. Their emissaries had orders to bring borax Iron the Gobi desert for use as a flux by the Babylonian goldsmiths. The borate mineral imported for this is not known but probably was borax. The ancient Persians and Arabians knew about borax and the Arabic word "Baurach" appears in a two thousand year old manuscript. The Sanscrit word for borax was tincana which has been corrupted to tincal. The Chinese were using borax as a glaze in three-hundred B.C. Marco Polo brought the first borax, along with gunpowder and spaghetti, from Mongolia to Europe in the late 1300's. Borax from Tibet was imported to Europe for nearly 500 years. In 1772 boric acid (sassolite) was discovered around Tuscany, Italy as a precipitant from volcanic steam vents. Production of boric acid started there about 1815 and provided the sole competition to the borax from Tibet. Borate deposits in Turkey have been known and exploited on a small scale since the 13th century. It is only recently that the operations are being modernized and production increased. About 1836, borax minerals were found in Chile and Argentina with borax production starting in 1852 in Chile and in Argentina in 1886. During the latter half of the 19th Century, Chile was the principle world producer of borax.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project (MPSO) is in Doha Qatar. This technical paper will discuss and explain the three major stages of geotechnical investigation employed. Stage one the tender geotechnical data and how this was used to design the TBM and identify various areas of risk. Stage two was the selection of supplementary geotechnical investigation methodologies. Stage three was the geotechnical investigation by specialist equipment installed on the TBM and providing further data on a real time basis as the TBM was advancing. Analysis of all the data will be provided along with the lessons learned.

Designing and constructing tunnels in seismic prone areas present unique challenges to both designers and contractors. The Westside Purple Line Extension Project– Section 3 in Los Angeles requires crossing an active fault that may subject the tunnels to extreme structural demands. In order to ensure that the linings will safely accommodate the fault movement, a revolutionary composite section—steel plate embedded in the intrados of the precast concrete segmental tunnel lining was finally selected. Additionally, continuous expansion steel plates over the circumferential joints will be installed to mitigate the potential opening of the circumferential joints.

New Mexico?s active coal mines have reclamation challenges that are being successfully resolved through the application of geomorphic grading methods. Soils and overburden material are often of poor quality, and annual precipitation is low. Revegetation on south and west aspect slopes often failed to persist. The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division had therefore been encouraging topographic diversity on reclamation to improve water harvesting and reduce the percentage of south aspect slopes. Steeply dipping, multiple coal seams may be mined by open pit methods. Structurally-controlled trellis drainage patterns that exist premine have to be replaced with dendritic drainage patterns on reclamation where the overburden had been pulverized. Sodic spoil material is prone to differential settling and the creation of piping features in areas where runoff ponds, which may lead to downslope instability. In each of these scenarios, the approximation of natural drainage patterns on the reclamation has reduced erosion and sedimentation by creating shorter slopes with correct profiles, and by improving conditions for revegetation establishment.

Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.

In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

"Control of fugitive dust in high latitude open-pit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomenon resulting in complicated flow regimes, and atmospheric inversion due to lack of adequate solar insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (One conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional open-pit mine geometries are simulated for differing seasonal conditions using the CRADLE-CFD package. The airflow is modeled using Standard Kappa-Epsilon Turbulence Model solved by RANS equations. The concept of particle tracking is used to predict the flow pattern of dust particles. For various climatic conditions, and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size (PM0.1 to PM10) and concentration are generated at various locations of a mine and dispersed by the airflow pattern inside the open-pit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit is reported at various time intervals. The development of atmospheric inversion during the winter season significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the open-pit domain. While during the summer, airborne dust particles were transported outside the open-pit domain in a short time. INTRODUCTIONComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of open-pit mines is challenging. In a recent paper, Bhowmick et. al. [1] presented different constraints and challenges in developing a 3-Dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. Simulation results of a 3D non-hydrostatic model by Shi et al. [2] showed that both the mechanical and thermal forcing are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an open-pit. Alvarez et al [3] used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al [4] introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. [5] used an OpenFOAM CFD simulation package to simulate and predict pollutant dispersion in an idealized and an actual open-pit mine in Chile with an intense insolation condition. The model was simulated for three different conditions: (i) air advection (10 m/s) driven mechanical turbulence; (ii) surface heat flux (240 W/m2) driven thermal buoyancy; and (iii) both air advection and surface heat flux driven conditions. The results of the simulations showed that the buoyant currents contribute to the removal of a large percentage of the dust particles. The buoyant currents modify the purely mechanical-turbulence induced flow pattern and reduce the particle residence time, commonly observed in a purely mechanical turbulent flow (non-buoyant case)"

Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early thirties in the so-called Hadsel mills (Figure 1) mainly used in gold mines on the U.S. West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 20 to 24 ft. in diameter and five-six feet in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill (Figure 2), the Aerofall dry grinding mill and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semi-autogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by Hr. G. J. Kushner of the Koppers Mineral Processing Division. In the size range of 24 to 32-ft. in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 36-ft. dia X 15-ft. long mills in Minnesota, powered by 12,000 hp. motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above one hundred and fifty mills was in operation prior to 1964.

Solution mining, sometimes also refered to as chemical mining or bacterial mining, is an innovative technology which, by making use of proper chemical reagents and taking advantage of bio-chemical action of some micro-organism species, can dissolve effectively most. desirable metallic values from ores and then extract them profitably from the resultant metal-bearing solution by suitable means to form the metal product it is more preferable to the conventional mining methods, not only because of its capability to improve working conditions and minimize environmental problems either underground or on surface, but also for its amenability in particular, to exploit low-grade or submarginal ore bodies, or those deposits which are too deep-seated to be mined out economically. Furthermore, it also provides a potential approach to win metals directly from their ores or ore-deposits in-situ by more simplified methods and at a lower cast than the conventional mining-milling-smelting process would do previously. Hence, in developing countries such as China, it will most, probably become a new mining tool of great promise. (1)

In 1852, six barrels of iron ore were loaded aboard the steamer Baltimore at Marquette, MI, after a trip by mule wagon from the nearby Cleveland Iron Mining Co. Shipped to Sault Ste. Marie, they were portaged around rapids and reloaded onto another ship for the final journey to the steel mills of Cleveland. In 1855, the same company-the predecessor of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.-chartered the brigantine Columbia to carry the first iron-ore cargo through the newly opened Soo locks. In 1981, about 2,190 iron-ore shipments in the form of taconite pellets were transported by water from US Great Lakes-ports. The total volume during the 284-day shipping season was 63 Mt (62 million It). Counting Canadian ship¬ments, almost 76 Mt (75 million It) of iron ore were moved on the lakes last year. The five Great Lakes-Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario-contain 20% of the world's fresh water. The area surrounding the lakes has 26% of the nation's populations, 47% of its steel production, and over 80% of the raw materials required to make steel. That figure includes 71% of the country's iron ore and 40% of its limestone. Only the availability of low-cost water transportation of raw materials has kept the heartland steel producers competitive. Iron ore shipped on the lakes originates in the Lake Superior district's Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges. Major mines and their principal partners are Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.'s Empire, Republic, and Tilden; Armco and Republic's Reserve Mining Co.; Oglebay Norton Co.'s Eveleth; Hanna Mining Co.'s National and Butler; Inland Steel Co.'s Minorca; Pickands Mather & Co.'s Erie and Hibbing, the latter operated in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corp.; and US Steel Corp.'s Minntac. Pelletized ore products at these facilities is shipped through seven principal ports on the upper lakes: Duluth, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Taconite Harbor, MN; Superior, WI, and Marquette, MI, on Lake Superior; and Escanaba, MI, on Lake Michigan. In 1981, tonnage volumes ranged from 13.3 Mt (13.1 million It) shipped from Duluth, to Marquette's total of 5.4 Mt (5.3 million It). The ore docks, with two exceptions, are operated by railroads, most of which are owned by mining companies. Table 1 illustrates US iron-ore shipments in 1981. In the lower lakes, ore is discharged at dock facilities close to the great steel-producing centers of Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo. Between the mines and mills, lakes and connecting waterways form one of the country's most effective transportation systems. Each year, vessels on the Great Lakes transport about 181 Mt (200 million st) of bulk industrial and agricultural materials-a greater quantity at a lower cost than can be achieved by any other transportation mode. Major commodities in Great Lakes trade are iron ore, coal, grain, limestone, cement, sand, and petroleum products. About 125 US flag vessels serve this trade, among them 13 "1,000-

Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress. One need be neither an historian nor technologist to recognize that activi¬ties related to the conversion of coal to other usable energy forms have been active for nearly fifty years. The degree of such activity and its evolution to significant commercial proportions has, however, fluctuated widely with world circumstance. For the past decade there has existed both a consistent technology evolution effort in classic R & D proportions, and a mainstream commercial acti¬vity but in rather modest proportions when viewed from the vantage point of world energy needs. But the chain of events wherein it became increasingly obvious that we were in energy trouble irrespective of world politics, spurred alternative energy source activities in the fossil fuels areas. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 made the obvious even more so and provided additional emphasis for the need of such alternatives. Yet the preponderance of these added expenditures and activities (with one notable exception which is the subject of this discussion) has been focused on the intended identification of the best or ultimate process by means of analytical and modest empirical means, whereas our circumstance dictates a bold, higher-risk effort to prove the viability of coal conversion as an industry on a real-time, real-size, real-economics basis. With such proof on hand, industry demands in all related areas will provide the stimulus, motivation and environment for all processes. There is both need and room for many who will compete for a meaningful segment of this new industry which can grow at a rate never seen before in our growth history. The single program in the world today oriented specifically toward the goal of proof of industry viability is the Energy Research and Development Administration's CBF (clean boiler fuels) Program for which COALCON is proud to be the prime contractor.

Coal refuse impoundments are disposal facilities specifically designed for the coal mining industry. Re-purposing refuse impoundments for co-disposal with natural gas flowback water and waste rock overburden has been investigated. The aims of this study were to investigate properties of coal refuse classification under the influence of co-disposed wastes as geochemical material exposure pathways from hydraulically exposed sodium and calcium ( Na+, Ca2+) cation loading from disposal of flowback water produced during the development of horizontal drilled natural shale gas frack wells, and waste rock having limestone characteristics. The geotechnical index classification of saturated cohesionless refuse is required to evaluate the liquefaction potential for strain or strength loss contributing to ground movements. This study is relevant to identifying changes in the coal refuse geotechnical index classification as sand-like, clay-like, or a borderline transitional material from the effects of ion and waste exposure in the impoundment’s reservoir porewater. Laboratory geotechnical tests were performed on fine coal refuse blended with different cations to classify the altered plastic behavior and index classification. Following determination of the index classification, the specimen’s stress–strain responses were investigated through isotropically consolidated undrained (ICU) triaxial compression tests. This experimental study culminated with two salient findings: the first is that introduction of ions alone into the refuse tailings or impoundment porewater resulted in significant material changes in property index classification, and the second finding was that the difference in refuse index classification did not correlate into noticeable effects of the monotonic undrained triaxial strength parameters.
