Covers with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) have been used in recent years as gas barriers for the isolation of wastes, including reactive mine tailings. Capillary barrier effects help to maintain a high degree of saturation in the moisture retaining layer, which then reduces gas flux. Various factors affect the degree of saturation of the moisture retaining layer in a CCBE, such as the material water retention characteristics and layer thickness. Slope geometry can also influence the hydrogeological behaviour of a CCBE, but this factor has frequently been ignored in the past. In this paper, the authors show some results of a numerical study that illustrates the influence of slope on the behavior of capillary barriers made of different types of material. The numerical model calculations are based on an actual case of a CCBE constructed in northern Quebec. This investigation shows that the water content profile is greatly affected by the position along the slope. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the influence of the geometry to properly establish the performance of a cover system.

Central to Newmont Gold's Mine planning system is the ability to interactively perform cut and fill operations on topographic contours and to accurately evaluate grades and tonnages within contour outlines using polygon set manipulation routines. This paper develops the applied geometry concepts that underlie these routines. Included are representation of volumes with contours, point in polygon test, block proportion in polygon calculation, polygon area and centroid calculation, and intersection, union, and complement between polygon sets.

Treatment of plant effluent including waste water and associated soluble and insoluble substances, is of a primary concern of many process industries including mineral processing operations. The major objective of such treatment is the removal of such impurities which can interfere with the process through the use of recycled water, and/or to comply with environmental ordinances. For example, Ramirez and Clements (1978) state that molybdenum contents in the range of 19 mg/1 eventually poison ion exchange resigns used for the extraction of uranium. In addition, recent restrictions by the EPA on molybdenum discharge values for mining waste water necessitate removal of this metal to (0.5-1.0 mg/1).

Under contractural arrangements with the Bureau of Mines, Mountain States Research and Development, Inc. (MSRD) completed a technological investigation to determine the feasibility of in situ mining of metal commodities other than copper and uranium, The study was based upon available literature and experience. The selection of potential candidates for in situ mining was influenced by economic importance, probable amenability to in situ methods, and environmental considerations. Four metals (or metal pairs) were chosen for feasibility studies: aluminum (with a copper byproduct), gold-silver, and manganese were recommended for further study and action; cobalt-nickel was also recommended contingent upon preliminary laboratory leaching and recovery investigations and field geohydrological work. Mining and recovery plans and an economic evaluation are included. Other metals with potential for in situ leaching are lead/ zinc, molybdenum, and vanadium.

This session has been organized to suggest to you that the development of direct reduction is important to the iron ore mining and coal mining industries. The papers presented this morning will include a discussion of the costs of making direct reduced iron (DRI), the iron ore and coal supplies needed to produce DRI, the financing of direct reduction (DR) projects and, probably most important, the impact of the DR development on the iron ore and coal industries. For starters, this opening presentation offers a brief statement about DR practice and DRI, under the title that should surprise no one: "Direct Reduction: What Is It?" There is always the chance? that a brief statement may become long and complicated. But, by mixing some slides borrowed from Hal Lownie with a larger number of photographs accumulated from other sources, I hope to avoid such pitfalls.

Since the late 1970's, the Roof Control Division (RCD) of MSHA's Technical Support has been performing linear analyses for the enhancement of miners' safety. This remote sensing process uses Landsat data to predict areas of potentially hazardous ground conditions in underground mines. To date approximately 700 analyses have been completed by the RCD, with nearly 75 being performed with the current equipment, software and methodology which was updated in early 1995. While success is difficult to measure, requests for linear analyses continue to come from large and small mining companies which suggests the industry's acceptance of the process.

The perennial subject of comminution is deserving of a fresh approach if one can be found. This is attempted here by directing attention primarily to principles rather than to theories. While theories attempt to explain how a certain process acts, principles delineate the laws which the action-must follow. Comminution may be defined as the progressive separation of particulate matter. At the present time this is accomplished commercially by applying energy in the form of compressive and, shearing forces. Such forces strain and distort the particles they contact. When-the applied stress locally exceeds the breaking strength at the weakest flaw in the particle, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends through the particle as a break. The minute changes in shape and the resulting energy flow cause the failure of other highly stressed flaws, with the consequent formation of a progeny (1) of new smaller particles out of its destroyed progenitor. The applied mechanical energy is transformed into strain energy as the particle is distorted, and then into heat when it fails. Only a tiny fraction of the order of 1/1000 of the applied energy necessary for breakage appears as new surface energy in the product particles. Mineral Resource Technologies(MRT) and Michigan Technological University (MTU)finalized an agreement that permits MRT to offer an advanced carbon removal technology process for coal fly ash from an ash residue generated by utilities. The agreement encompasses the dominant existing US patents using a wet process for fly ash enhancement. The wet process for coal beneficiation of a fly ash product involves four steps. First, a slurry mixture is formed of a fly ash material and a liquid. Second, gravity is used to separate and collect a first-material fraction of the fly ash, having a density less than the liquid. This is done by skimming off the flotation slurry material.

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. The objective of this study was to subject two Alaska low-rank coals to hydrothermal drying to enhance their marketability in the Pacific Rim markets and to evaluate the chemical and physical properties of the dried products as a function of process conditions. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coalfield have a heating value of approximately 18.5 MJ/kg and contain about 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275° to 325° C) of lump coal, from the Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coalfield, enhanced the heating value of the material, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 18.5 MJ/kg to nearly 27.8 MJ/kg. The product coal, with a high heating value and only 0.2% S, is an environmentally-acceptable premium fuel; additionally, with the Hardgrove grindability index of the coal greatly improved, its value is even further enhanced. An increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Also, ulminite reflectance increased to 0.92%, and ulminite was subjected to widespread vesiculation; this resulted in a coke-like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

The TRJV Mine is located approximately 43 miles northeast of Winnemucca, along the east flank of the Osgood Mountains in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, Northwest Nevada (see Figure 1). The Turquoise Ridge Mine is an underground mine, and is a 25% joint venture partner with Newmont Mining. The TRJV mine utilizes the underhand cut-and-fill mining method due to the relatively low rock quality in the ore zones and the relatively shallow dipping 25-45 degree ore body geometries. This paper defines a rehabilitation risk rating system (RRRS) for prioritizing rehabilitation of drifts damaged in the mining processes including long term development drifts providing access to the mining areas. The ultimate use is as a mine planning tool for the organized scheduling of rehab in a timely manner. A few case studies of the most needy rehab areas identified by the RRRS mapping system is presented, and the type of rehab completed design for these areas. Suggestions on improving the rehab risk mapping system include the use of support history and rock mass strength rating factors.

Among the impurities present in phosphate ore, dolomite is the most difficult to remove. This is because dolomite and phosphate have similar chemical compositions and because the dissolved species of dolomite is adsorbed on the surface of the phosphate mineral. A new amphoteric surfactant was found to be a suitable collector for the separation of dolomite and phosphate. Flotation results showed that the new amphoteric collector had a high flotation selectivity for dolomite over a wide pH range. studies on the flotation of francolite and dolomite in each other's supernatant demonstrated that the dissolved ions had little effect on the selectivity of the new collector. It was found, however, that the dissolved ions were detrimental to the flotation separation using sodium oleate as collector. From a mixture offrancolite and dolomite containing 26.2% P2O5, a phosphate concentrate containing 35.2% P205 with a 90% recovery was obtained using 290 g/t of the amphoteric collector. The rejection of MgO was 81.41 %.

Tele-remote operation of production equipment from surface will change the design criteria for underground mines. And for ventilation, with machine operators on surface, conventional planning to dilute and remove pollutants can become redundant. Natural Resources Canada with industrial partners are investigating what will be the new environmental design criteria. Additional complications include new mining equipment being designed without standard services and mines’ desire to eliminate conventional auxiliary ventilation. Findings to date show the cooling of equipment’s hydraulic systems to be the most demanding element, especially in dead-ends and when stationary. Consequently, revised ventilation based heat control strategies for equipment are being developed for the automated mine of the future.

"INTRODUCTIONThe South Napa Earthquake of 2014 caused ground motion at numerous reinforced concrete-lined (shotcrete-lined) winery tunnels in Napa County and Sonoma County, California. The occurrence of seismic ground motion at these tunnel complexes, known as wine caves, presented an opportunity to reevaluate seismic performance of reinforced concrete and reinforced shotcrete lined tunnels. The authors of this paper updated the most recent comprehensive compilation and evaluation of case studies by Power and others (1998), which correlates peak ground acceleration (PGA) at tunnel sites to damage. For this update, the authors evaluated the seismic performance of 31 wine caves near the South Napa Earthquake epicenter; including some of the 90 wine caves they designed since 1991, some caves designed by others, and additional caves constructed by contractors that they frequently work with. Tunnel designers can use the new data presented in this paper to help evaluate the usefulness of detailed seismic design analyses. THE SOUTH NAPA EARTHQUAKE The South Napa Earthquake occurred at 3:20 AM Pacific Daylight Time on August 24, 2014. Figure 1 shows the approximate location of the epicenter, the measured/estimated PGA contours, and the location of wineries with wine caves added to the database where the PGA was at least 0.2 g. The epicenter was along the West Napa fault, about 5 miles south-southwest of downtown Napa, California. The earthquake moment magnitude was 6.0, and measured/estimated PGAs were up to about 0.7 g. The duration of strong shaking was about 10 seconds. This earthquake was characterized by right lateral strike-slip fault movement, ground surface rupture, and after slip at the ruptures. Increased surface water flows were observed at seven creeks after the earthquake. Groundwater level rises of up to 5 feet were observed in Sonoma County wells after the earthquake. The earthquake was the largest seismic event in the San Francisco Bay Area, which includes Napa and Sonoma Counties, since the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. The Napa event caused an estimated $400 million in damage. This damage included moderate to extensive structural damage to older commercial buildings and to some newer buildings in downtown Napa. This damage resulted from ground motions, subsequent fires, and failed underground utility systems."

In Switzerland at present, the longest railway tunnels in the world, the Gotthard(57 km) and the Loetschberg base tunnel (34km) are under construction. For thischallenge six high-tech HERRENKNECHT Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM)are applied, which have to excavate approx. 80 km at the Gotthard and 20 km at the Loetschberg Tunnels. The machines being used are of a single Gripper-TBM type, which are equipped with the latest rock support techniques, in order to optimize the quality of the working conditions for the personnel which have direct impact on the quality of the tunnels. The different requirements of the projects based on different speci?cations within the tender documents led to completely different TBM concepts which will be reviewed in detail in this paper.

Since 1973 when the first edition of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook was published, many significant changes have occurred in the US mining industry. The industry went through a fairly prosperous period immediately after 1973, but then many economic pressures came to bear on mining companies, particularly in the metal and coal branches of the industry. These pressures changed both the mining methods used and the general economics of the mining methods. As a result, the industry today is different in many ways titan it was in 1973. A general summary of some of the more important changes that have come about will be provided here as well as some assessment of the effects of these changes on the choices of mining methods. In the metal mining industry, the most significant trends were increased surface mining, the use of larger and more efficient equipment, and increased technology and automation. The primary impetus for these changes was unprecedented competition from foreign producers. In many cases, this competition came about because of the nationalization of foreign mines and the tendency for these mines to become a source of foreign exchange. The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three- year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

Restricted fields of vision are a common problem with underground mining equipment. Also, when lighting systems are provided, they may be positioned where they cause glare. This restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a PC based software package to aid in the analysis of certain human engineering aspects of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines.

Auxiliary Equipment pumping systems to support primary, secondary and regrind grinding circuits will be the primary focus of this paper. Every grinding system is unique and requires special design considerations for proper application of pumps to transport mill discharge. To satisfy the majority of applications, a new series of pumps has been developed by Svedala, known as World Class Pumps. Selection of these newly developed pumps for each type of grinding circuit will be presented. Specific components of selection are materials of construction, piping system, classification method, material characteristics and slurry characteristics. Both horizontal and vertical pump applications will be reviewed with emphasis on rules of pump piping and sump design.

In 2018, the German Federal government decided to phase-out the energy production using coal-fired power plants and to terminate lignite mining completely by 2038 at the latest. This decision will impact approximately 60,000 jobs. It will have an enormous impact on the socioeconomic development especially in all German lignite mining regions. To avoid economic and political friction, it is of utmost importance to achieve a sustainable transition towards a post-mining era and to offer residents in the mining districts perspectives for a good future that include adequate job opportunities. In this context, the German government is providing massive structural aids early on. As previous closure experiences from the German hard coal mining industry have shown, it takes at least a generation to overcome the effects of a strategic closing decision of this magnitude. Therefore, the planned closure process appears to be a long time at first glance. In fact, however, it is not.
