Mr Vegter has analysed, in some depth, the approximations made in the treatment of the kinetic data presented in the original by ourselves (ref.1) and has come to the conclusion that ?under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady-state assumption was inaccurate?. We are acutely aware of the fact that the experimental method adopted does not permit the attainment of a true steady-state in the elution reactor. However, this does not eliminate the attainment of a pseudo steady-state by a suitable choice of the experimental parameters with the accompanying simplification of the analysis of the data with the aim of drawing the reader?s attention to the most important objective of the paper viz. the effect of various operating parameters on the rate of elution of gold.

Lifelong development of skills and knowledge of mining professionals has been recognised worldwide as a challenge for the development of a sustainable mining sector. Practical training and learning over the mine value chain are among the key components of this knowledge building. However, the number of available mining sites for continuous education in real-life conditions is limited; also the specifications for practical training are not clearly defined. The project MINETRAIN was developed to (i) evaluate the potential of the shortly-closing Pyhäsalmi Mine, in Finland, as an educational and training underground facility, and thus, prolong the utility of the existing modern mine site, and to (ii) develop and test practical training programs for mining and mining industry related professionals. Pyhäsalmi facilities enable training among all disciplines related to the overall mine value chain and hence, the project has potential in providing education for sustainable management of any phase of mining operations. The philosophy underpinning the MINETRAIN approach to mining activities is to assist the clients in minimising the technical and financial risks by providing a competitive and skilled personnel asset while optimising the value drivers in their operations. As a first major step of the project, a pilot training course, involving basic-level online theory and hands-on training at the Pyhäsalmi mine site, was undertaken in summer 2019. Feedback from the pilot test group of mining professionals has proved to be very positive. The comments from the participants strongly emphasised the added value of the practical onsite training for improved understanding in the large scale picture of mining on the entire value chain. As a second phase of the project, a new test course was launched in June 2020. The second MINETRAIN course focuses on new technologies and digitisation in mining. Several methods exist by which the capacity of a dense media separation (DMS) plant can be improved: 1) Increase the feed rate in spite of efficiency 2) Replace with bigger equipment 3) Add whole new module 4) Replace total plant 5) Change over to four shift/ seven days per week roster 6) Replace with alternative process 7) Increase the availability and utilization Options 1 ? 6 have varying degrees of cost implications. The seventh option would seem to be the easiest. Normally it is also the function of the plant operating and maintenance team to maximize this. Usually higher operating and maintenance cost are associated with an increase in these parameters. A general principle that is applicable to plants and systems is that as the complexity increases, the total availability decreases. By simplifying the flow line it may be possible to reduce cost while at the same time increase the availability and utilization. The typical standard DMS flow line contains components that compensate for the variance in pump performance or for the inefficient recovery of ferrosilicon with additional equipment. LHD (load haul dumper) is now used as a loading machine for intermediate mechanization in underground coal mining. For survival in the intense competition in the global business environment in recent years it is essential that LHD machine should be reliable and maintained effectively and efficiently. This paper seeks to study the reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM)of an LHD machine with failure and repair data by Markov modelling. The constraints and reasons for machine unavailability are outlined. The reliability and maintainability of an LHD and its subsystems are evaluated. Possible modification or design alternatives are highlighted. Reliability and maintainability of an LHD system are disappointing. Remediation of the environmental (and social) disturbances caused by opencast brown coal mining in the past in north-west Bohemia isa priority for state environmental policy. In order to provide a concept for full restoration of land following disturbance by opencast mining, a special interdisciplinary project supported by a grant from the Czech Ministry of Environment was started in 2000. The initial stage of the project was intended to summarize and evaluate the findings and the works carried out in connection with various reclamation activities in the afflicted area over a period of more than 50 years. The main aims of the three-year project are to make use of the best available landscape environmental management knowledge in order to harmonize the ecological, aesthetic, productive and social functions of new valuable landscape, including the recovery of historical continuity and an understanding of ?landscape memory?. The basic landscape functions were assessed on two different scale levels. On a large scale, the relevant attributes were investigated over the whole area of the Sokolov brown coal basin (220 km2). The data and experience acquired were used to define large-scale guiding principles for the rehabilitation of a post-mining landscape. On a small scale, the basic characteristics and functions of the landscape were analysed in the Litov-Chlum model area (2 km2). The information derived from this analysis was used to formulate a small-scale approach for the rehabilitation of the model area and also to define general methodological principles. Tests were conducted on samples of rutile, titaniferous slag and ilmenite; each sample was mixed with coke and chlorinated in a bubbling fluidized bed at 1000°C. Profiles of the rates of chlorination of species were constructed from chemical compositions of the bed residues at different durations. From the start FeO and MnO are chlorinated quickly and all but entirely in a fraction of the time it takes to chlorinate all the TiO2. When the level of FeO is significant, as in slag and ilmenite, FeO is chlorinated faster than TiO2is. In these oxides, there is an inverse relationship between the rates of chlorination of FeO and TiO2during this first stage; the relationship, moreover, correlates linearly with the initial percentage of FeO in the oxide. We identify three stages in the chlorination process; a first, in slag and ilmenite, when FeO is being chlorinated; a second, when TiO2is most readily chlorinated; and a third, towards the end, when the levels of TiO2are reduced to those of other species. The rates at which individual species are chlorinated are analysed in terms of their appreciation or depreciation with respect toTiO2

Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key a spec of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

In the mining industry abrasion caused by both sliding and impact have over the years resulted in costly damage to installations such as ore passes and silos. Good geotechnical practices combined with the use of a high quality abrasion resistant concrete can prolong the life of such an installation and minimize problems associated with abrasion. In order to maximize the life of an abrasion resistant concrete, the choice and combination of the correct raw materials (cement, aggregate and fibre) and overall mix design needed to make up such a concrete are important. This paper presents technical data and practical experience showing that concrete formulated with calcium aluminate cement resists severe abrasion conditions better than similar OPC-based concretes.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Steel was sampled after calcium treatment, to follow changes in inclusion composition during the processing of alumium-killed steel into continuously-cast billets, at Mittal Vereeniging. There is some shift in the distribution of inclusion compositions towards alumina, as the liquid steel moves from the ladle to the tundish. This shift may reflect some reoxidation. However, the effect on inclusion modification is small, since only a small fraction of the tundish oxide inclusions is fully solid?which agrees with the plant observation that these heats cast without clogging. Magnesium oxide in the inclusions contributes to liquid formation, substantially increasing the range of lime: alumina ratios over which the inclusions are partially or fully liquid.

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient regression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600ºC. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag

A large number of brittleness concepts have been used in very different studies in the literature. One of them is the B1brittleness concept. In this study, the objective is to criticize the B1 brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills. The B1 brittleness concept, the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength (sc) to tensile strength (sT), are widely used as a rock brittleness concept in the literature (Inyangand Pitt, 1990; Verhoef, P.N.W. 1993; Neil, D.M. et al.1994;Becker, et al.1984; Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Göktan, R.M.1992; Kahraman, S. 2001; Yamaguchi, U. 1970; Verhoef, P.N.W. et al.1996; Bilgin, 1982; Howarth and Rowlands,1987; Howarth, D.F. et al. 1986). So, it was used as a rock brittleness concept in this article. The value of the B1brittleness concept is equal to the tangent of ß angle in the following graph. It was seen that more meaningful relationships could be obtained with the B2 brittleness, the under ?Area?(= 1/2(scxsT) = B2) under the curve, instead of tangent ß, (=B1), of the curve.

The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10?15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed, and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

The Waterberg Coalfield has vast potential to become a significantmining and industrial centre in South Africa. Its future developmenthinges on a number of critical decisions that must be made jointly by government, power utilities and industry, and on some technical and economic challenges that must initially be overcome. Sufficient water is the primary key to enabling exploitation, together with an adequate market for the large volumes of low-grade coal. As the most likely consumer of this coal will be either a power station or a petrochemical complex, the need for additional energy will be a driving force in the development of this coalfield. Conventional mining methods can exploit the shallow coal resources in both the Grootegeluk and the Vryheid formations, but alternative technologies such as coalbed methane extraction and underground coal gasification are the only currently known technologies that may be able to exploit the deep Grootegeluk Formation resources. However, extensive research is still required into these procedures, particularly with respect to the Waterberg coals. Transport infrastructure to the region is currently not sufficiently well developed to support large-scale exploitation of the region?s coal resources. In particular, the railway line would have to be extensively upgraded to allow the increased export of coal. Alternative transport methods such as pipelines would also have to be pursued to serve a large Sasol-type petrochemical complex or coal gas extraction. The road network would also require improvement, as only the roads between the main commercial centres are currently tarred. Dr Con Fauconnier, Kumba CEO, concluded his presentation to the Investing in African Mining Conference 2004 with the words: Again, it?s all about infrastructure? when it?s there, it enables the development of bulk mining projects which attract the resultant economic benefits for the region and country as a whole. These words aptly sum up one of the stumbling blocks to the future development of the Waterberg Coalfield.

Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

I would also like to bid a special welcome to all of the international delegates who have travelled to Johannesburg to take part in what surely be a most rewarding session of deliberations. As you come together over next four days, you will have a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and information on strategies and practices for the implementation of sustainable patterns of development. The objectives of this meeting are both timely and far-reaching, as countries around the globe work towards the sustainable use of the world resources. Each of you brings a high level of expertise to these deliberations. I know that you will make the most of this opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities to highlight the most innovative and technologically efficient methods of social protection in order to ensure an increase in the quality of life, health, safety and living environment for the peoples of the Africa. Our country, although endowed with an immense and diverse array of mineral deposits, is perhaps best known in the mining industry for the fact that it is the world’s biggest producer of gold. Although South African gold production has declined over the past years and the industry faces serious problems, it is a myth that the South African industry is moribund. There is a new energy coursing through the South African producers which will ensure their powerful presence for many years to come, based not only on their domestic production but also and probably increasingly on their external operations. Africa features prominently in the latter category.

Solving ventilation networks of natural splitting is a basic problem in mine ventilation. Several mathematical techniques are used to solve this problem. This paper proposes a new method which combines the advantages of both classical Hardy Cross method and unconstrained optimization techniques. The trials carried out on model networks have shown that the method offers some facilities in the analysis of mine ventilation networks. The large proportion of gangue minerals present in platinum bearing ores in South Africa provides challenges to the flotation and downstream processes. In order to take effective measures to reduce their recovery in flotation, an understanding of the mechanisms and factors influencing their behaviour is needed. Typical gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar, quartz, chromite and talc. Of these, talc is a naturally hydrophobic mineral and although it is present in relatively small quantities, it has a disproportionate effect as it has a strong froth stabilizing effect, increasing the recovery of other gangue minerals by entrainment. Talc recovery is effectively reduced with the addition of polymeric depressants. Although the other gangue minerals are assumed to be hydrophilic and their recovery by entrainment is expected to follow the water recovery, there is some evidence that they may be activated by the typical reagent suites used. Reagents such as copper sulphate, added as an activator, and collectors are used to selectively induce hydrophobicity on the sulphides. It has been shown that some of these gangue minerals can be activated. This research work investigates whether inadvertent copper activation is mineral specific and evaluates the mechanisms and factors affecting the reversal of activation with the addition of the depressants using electrokinetic measurements, adsorption and microflotation tests. Results are presented that show that the selected minerals do respond differently and that the reversal of activation is dependent on mineral type, depressant type, dosage and ionic strength of the electrolyte.

ABSTRACT: The safe design of excavations created in a fractured rock mass is of paramount importance in rock engineering. Depending on the nature of the stress regime acting on an excavation, and the associated deformational behaviour of the rock mass surrounding the excavation, a number of potential failure mechanisms exist. These involve a combination of shear failure on existing joints, extension of critically oriented joints and propagation of new fractures through previously intact rock. Conventional numerical codes usually adopt either a continuum or discontinuum approach; this often results in significant over simplification and kinematic limitations particularly when modelling complex rock mass behaviour in the close vicinity of excavations. This paper describes the results from several case examples using a combined finite element-discrete element code, ELFEN that incorporates a crack propagation mode. Through the use of selected rock engineering examples, the authors demonstrate the potential of the code in the realistic simulation of complex rock failure both in underground and surface excavation applications. RÉSUMÉ: La conception sûre des excavations créées dans une masse de roche fracturée est d'importance primordiale dans la géotechnique. Selon la nature du régime d'effort autour d’une excavation, et le déformation associé de la masse de roche autour de l'excavation, il exsite un certain nombre de mécanismes potentiels d'échec. Ceux-ci comportent une combinaison d'échec de cisaillement sur les joints existants, la prolongation des joints d’orientation critique et la propagation de nouvelles ruptures dans la roche précédemment intacte. Les codes numériques conventionnels adoptent habituellement l’approche, soit d’un continuum, soit de discontinuum; ceci a souvent comme conséquence une sursimplification significative et les limitations cinématiques en particulier en modelant le comportement complexe de la masse de roche très proche des excavations. Cet article décrit les résultats de plusieurs exemples de cas en utilisant un code qui s’agit d’une combination d’élément discret et d'élément fini, ELFEN qui incorpore un mode de propagation de fissure. Par l'utilisation des exemples choisis géotechniques, les auteurs démontrent le potentiel du code dans la simulation réaliste de l'échec complexe de roche pour les applications aux excavations soit au fond soit à l’extérieure. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das sichere Design der Aushöhlungen, die in einer zerbrochenen Felsenmasse verursacht werden, ist vom paramount Wert in der Felsentechnik. Abhängig von der Natur des Druckregimes, das auf einer Aushöhlung und dem dazugehörigen deformationalen Verhalten der Felsenmasse umgibt die Aushöhlung fungiert, bestehen eine Anzahl von möglichen Ausfalleinheiten. Diese beziehen eine Kombination des Scherausfalls auf vorhandenen Verbindungen, Verlängerung der kritisch orientierten Verbindungen und Ausbreitung der neuen Brüche durch vorher intakten Felsen. Herkömmliche numerische Codes nehmen normalerweise entweder ein kontinuum oder discontinuum Annäherung an; dieses ergibt häufig bedeutende Übervereinfachung und kinematische Beschränkungen, besonders wenn es kompliziertes Felsenmasseverhalten in der Nähe der Aushöhlungen modelliert. Dieses Papier beschreibt die Resultate von einigen Fallbeispielen mit einem kombinierten begrenzten Element - getrennten Elementcode, ELFEN, das einen Sprungausbreitungmodus enthält. Several Rockmass classification systems have been developed and used in Civil Engineering design and for underground mining operations. Some of these rockmass classification systems have been modified and used in the South African coal mining industry to quantify descriptive geological information for use in coal mine design and roof support selection. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system developed in the USA has been investigated in detail as part of the study. Advantages and disadvantages of the system have been identified by means of underground and surface borehole testing. Investigations into the rating systems in South Africa found that most of the rating systems used in the South African coal mining industry are for planning purposes, and are conducted on borehole cores. This study also highlighted that the rating systems being used are based on geology, and that the human factor plays a major role in the rating systems. To overcome these problems, all the classification systems used in South African coal mines have been benchmarked against impact splitting technique and documented. The best elements of these systems are combined into a new standard system that will be easily used by all mine geologists and rock mechanics engineers. Plusieurs systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été développés et utilisés dans le Génie Civil et pour les opérations d'exploitation minière souterraine. Certains de ces systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été modifiés et utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine pour quantifier l'information géologique descriptive utilisée dans la conception de mines de charbon et la sélection de soutènement du toit. Le système d'Evaluation de Toit de Mine de Charbon (CMRR) développé aux USA a été examiné en détail, comme part de l'étude présente. Tests en surface de trous de mine ont permis d'identifier les avantages et inconvénients du système. Une étude des systèmes d'évaluation en Afrique du Sud a révélé que la plupart des systèmes d'évaluation utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine sont utilisés pour la planification, et sont menés sur les carottes de trous de mine. L'étude présente a aussi souligné que les systèmes d'évaluation utilisés sont basés sur la géologie, et que le facteur humain joue un rôle majeur dans les systèmes d'évaluation. Pour surmonter ces problèmes, tous les systèmes de classification utilisés en Afrique du Sud ont été référencés en termes de technique de fissuration sur choc, et documentés. Les meilleurs éléments de ces systèmes sont combinés dans un nouveau système standard qui sera utilisé aisément par tous les géologues de mine et les ingénieurs miniers. Verschiedene Gesteinsmassenklassifikationssysteme wurden entwickelt und kamen im Design für Hoch- und Tiefbau und Untertageabbau zum Einsatz. Einige dieser Gesteinsmassen-klassifikationssysteme wurden modifiziert und sind in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie in Verwendung, um beschreibende geologische Informationen für die Anwendung im Design von Kohlebergwerken und der Firstabstützungsauswahl quantitativ zu beschreiben. Das in den USA entwickelte Kohlengrubenfirstbewertungssystem (CMRR) wurde als Teil der Studie im Detail untersucht. Vorteile und Nachteile des Systems sind mittels der Untergrund- und Oberflächenbohrlochprüfung gekennzeichnet worden. Prüfungen der Bewertungssysteme in Südafrika ergaben, daß die meisten Bewertungssysteme die in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie benutzt werden, Planungszwecken dienen und werden anhand von Bohrlochkernen durchgeführt. Diese Studie hob auch hervor, daß die verwendeten Bewertungssysteme auf Geologie basieren und daß der menschliche Faktor eine Hauptrolle in den Bewertungssystemen spielt. Um diese Probleme zu überwinden, wurden alle in südafrikanischen Kohlengruben benutzte Klassifizierungssysteme vergleichsweise in Hinblick auf Spaltschlagtechnik überprüft und dokumentiert. Die besten Elemente dieser Systeme werden in ein neues Standardsystem kombiniert, das leicht von allen Grubengeologen und von Gebirgsmechanikingenieuren benutzt werden kann.

Worldwide TiO2is extracted from natural ilmenite, rutile, and anatase minerals via the sulphateand chloride processes. The sulphate process generates large volumes of less toxic wastes, whereas the chloride process, including the ilmenite-chloride process of DuPont, yields much lower volume of wastes, which are highly toxic and hazardous. The treatment and disposal of such hazardous chloride wastes is both expensive and difficult in terms of long-term monitoring. Besides the waste management and disposal, there is also a shortage of high-grade titanium dioxide minerals in nature, which consequently yields much larger tonnages of sulphate and chloride wastes. In the present investigation we report the results of an alternative titaniferous mineral beneficiation process based on soda ash roasting of minerals. Compared to the conventional processes for beneficiation of TiO2- ores, the alkali roasting of titaniferous offers several advantages including the zero process wastes. In the soda ash roasting process, the mineral is mixed with sodium carbonate and heated above 1023 K in air. The oxidative roasting of ores yields several complex alkali compounds, some of which produce a liquid mixture above 1123 K. In this paper, we have attempted to characterize the composition and physical chemistry of alkali-rich liquid phase. The phase equilibria in the Ti-(M:Fe)-Na-O system are evaluated and compared with the phases formed as a result of roasting reaction. The experimental results revealed that the composition of complex alkali liquid at the reaction interface plays an important role in determining the transport of O2-ions and decomposition of ilmenite. The roles of the crystal structure of mineral phases and their energetics are also emphasized in controlling their decomposition during alkali roasting. The presence of molten alkali in controlling the partitioning of water-soluble alkali salts and insoluble sodium titanate is also explained.
