In past years, Chile has been the largest copper producer in the world and for 2002 mining represented country average of 10 % of the GDP, accounting for 47 % of the total exportation. As copper sulphides are the main mining resources in the country, the metal is produced using the classical processes of flotation and pyrometallurgical extraction. Seven copper smelter plants, which extends from the northern Atacama desert to the central part of the country produced1,522,000 metric tons of fine copper in 2002, approximately one half of total copper concentrate production, with a notorious environmental impact due to the great amount of slag produced during these extraction steps. In this work, a global characterization of copper pyrometallurgical slags produced and disposed of in Chile and worldwide is done, and the concept of total project development is considered to explain the scopes of the study, recovering different compounds and generating new activities around mining. The presentation is completed with the proposal of various methods and techniques being developed today in a joint project between smelter plants and the University of Concepción, with the support of the Chilean government and mining companies, addressed to generate new materials from copper slag. Recovery of copper, molybdenum, precious metals, silica and iron, that is the most abundant component of the slag, are the goals for this research. Metals, commercial compounds, alloys and different forms of iron oxides for steel industry are proposed products.

One of the main problems related to mining investment decisions is the use of accurate prediction models. Metallurgical recovery is a major source of variability, and in this regard, the Chuquicamata processing plant recovery was modelled as a function of geomining-metallurgical data and ore characteristics obtained from a historical database. In particular, the dataset gathered contains information related to feed grades, ore hardness, particle size, mineralogy, pH, and flotation reagents. A systemic approach was applied to fit a multivariate regression model representing the copper recovery in the plant. The systemic approach consists of an initial projection of the characteristic grinding product size (P80), based upon energy consumption at the particle size reduction step, followed by a flotation recovery model. The model allows for an improvement in the investment decision process by predicting performance and risk. The final geometallurgical model uses eight operational variables and is a significant improvement over conventional prediction models. A validation was performed using a recent data-set, and this showed a high correlation coefficient with a low mean absolute error, which reveals that the geometallurgical model is able to predict, with acceptable accuracy, the actual copper recovery in the plant.

Mine wide, underground wireless communications are possible with the use of Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) technology. Due to the propagation through rock of ULF radio signals a relatively small antenna can provide communications coverage over a complete mining operation. Starting as a Personal Emergency Device (PED) for emergency messaging to miners under all circumstances, the ULF communications system has grown to include capabilities of remote control of underground equipment such as pumps and fans and centralised blasting initiation. This technology is now in use on 5 continents having lately made it onto the African mining scene. The paper and presentation will provide the audience with the benefit from international mining know-how in this technology as well as local African experiences. A recent commissioning exercise for example, is expected to pay for itself in electricity savings within a few months. These and other results from practical demonstrations and usage will be covered. This novel technology becomes an integral part of the daily operating infrastructure of a mine with immediate safety and business benefits. It is able to reduce capital expenditure and is designed for ease of routine operational use. The paper will conclude with insights into current R&D for further development of this technology.

This paper explains the politics of mine nationalization in contemporary South Africa. Nationalization and privatization typically occur in the oil, mineral resources, and state utilities sectors, and they tend to follow one another in a long-term cyclical pattern. The paper explains why the current international environment has encouraged demands for nationalization and other forms of ?resource nationalism? in the South African minerals sector. It goes on to describe how the resurgence of resource nationalism has been influenced by internal factional politics in the African National Congress. It concludes that nationalization is unlikely to be the outcome of current policy deliberations within the ANC.

Oxides of sulphur are corrosive and are produced when sulphur-containing fuels are burned. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a characteristic, irritating, pungent odour. Exposure routes to the human body are mainly through inhalation and skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms of exposure to SO2 may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; rhinorrhea (discharge of thin nasal mucous); choking; cough; and reflex bronchoconstriction. To protect employees against the ill health effects of SO2 exposure, they are often required to make use of respiratory protection whenever entering areas were the SO2 levels exceed the statutory limits. The use of respiratory protective equipment should always be a last resort and should be considered only after other control measures have failed to reduce occupational exposure levels to below the occupational exposure limit or whilst other control measures are being investigated or implemented. Whenever the use of respiratory protection equipment is considered, it should always be used as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection plan. It is also extremely important that all potentially exposed persons are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained.

In today?s high tech world, systems are getting bigger, faster, better. To remain at the leading edge, in any business, depends on accurate but flexible design thereby allowing operational managers to provide alternatives to improve their operations. The ultimate goal is to deliver to plan, with optimum economics. Mining is no different, with falling prices and escalating costs, improved margins become the focal objective. There are many ways to achieve this, ranging from operational efficiency improvements through production scenarios to planning initiatives. Of all, planning usually receives the least attention, yet it is the area of most influence on the NPV of the reserve. With computer technology, numerous concepts and iterations are possible thereby closing the gap between optimal and actual design. This paper discusses the application of the split shell design at the De Beers Venetia open pit in South Africa.

Coal mining using longwall methods of mining can lead to intense disturbances of undermined roof strata. The disturbances may extend beyond the extraction area and the resulted rock mass deformations will appear differentiated. In the case of stiff and undermined roof strata, the energy stored in these rock masses may be frequently dissipated in the form of high-energy seismic tremors. Such events can occur if these strata should fail or „free themselves” either from the constrainment of rock environment or from adjacent strata. It has also been found that the amount of the stored energy closely depends on the size and/or slenderness of these strata. Thus, it would be possible to apply specific preventive measures to reduce the energy of mining – induced seismic tremors. The methods are based on artificial disintegration of the structure of energy – storing strata. One of the most efficient methods is a method of directional hydraulic fracturing, which is regarded as an alternative solution from the traditional blasting and hydraulic methods.

These elements are added in liquid iron inform of Ferro alloys to get the desired composition and properties. Thus, Ferro alloys are important additives in the production of steel. It can be said that no steel can be made without use of one or more of the several Ferro alloys. They form the backbone of steel. Thus, the Ferro alloys industry is vitally linked for its growth and development to that of the steel industry. Ferro alloys industry in India has never been globally competitive, despite its rich ore deposits and low-cost manpower, essentially due to a) Insufficient availability and high cost of electric power b) Increasing ores and reductants cost c) Non-availability of low ash, low phos. coking coal in the country for the production of desired coke with low ash, and low phos. contents, making import of such coke at a high cost imperative d) High-cost and insufficient infrastructural facilities (both road and rail) for rapid transportation of ore from mines to plants e)Stiff competition from producers and exporters of Ferro alloys in other countries like South Africa, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Australia etc. due to global trade agreement which has made drastic reduction in customs duty on imports necessary. f) Wide fluctuations in the International price of Ferro alloys depending on demand versus supply. To over come these challenges plus adhering to stringent pollution control norms innovations are inevitable in the process technology, and plant equipment design, along with frequent changes in product mix, to be more cost-effective. An attempt is made in this paper to address the innovations that took place in the past and those that further need to be made, considering the future of this industry.

CSIRO Mineral has recently developed a new electron microprobe based system for characterizing zircon grains from heavy minerals sand deposits. The system acquires cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra, X-ray and backscattered electron (BSE) signals in parallel. By scanning over a specified target area, CL wavelength and X-ray element distribution maps of polished zircon grains can be acquired. Post-inspection of the combined dataset using in-house developed software enables correlations between chemistry and structure to be investigated. The new method offers significant benefits over traditional CL and BSE techniques in that direct comparison with the elemental concentrations over the same region is now achievable. By combining the electron microprobe results with data for the same mapped region obtained via a nuclear microprobe, significantly better detection limits (~ 1ppb) for elements with atomic numbers greater than iron are possible. The ability to measure spatially related analytical data and then investigate the correlation of the CL spectra with chemical data is an important advancement in the characterization of zircons. This work analyses a new approach to estimates bubble size distribution of froth surfaces using artificial neural networks (ANN).Also, the robustness of ANN to interpret images with illumination perturbations, produced by light problems or dirt attached to the window of the video camera is evaluated. The experimental work was carried out in a laboratory flotation column, instrumented with an image acquisition system. The images were processed making use of a perceptron model with a hidden layer, sigmoidal transfer function and unitary bias, and the ANN trained with a back propagation algorithm. The results of validation show that ANN are reliable for learning and producing generalized predictions of the froth mean bubble diameter and bubble size distribution, when the model is trained using a database that contains information on the illumination intensity. There has been disappointingly little development in the analysis of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. A brief review of literature shows that the application of numerical stress analysis methods to open pit mine slope stability has become only relatively common in recent times, and that there are as yet no standardized approaches. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardized approaches in particular, is surprising in view of the ?ultra? deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. In this paper, the results of a substantial programme of two dimensional and axisymmetric analyses of open pit slopes are described. Variations in the following parameters were taken into account in this programme: slope angle, slope height and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratio. The evaluation of the data has concentrated on the tensile stresses and the extension strains in the slopes. This is believed to be the first publication dealing with strain distributions in slopes. The occurrence of zones of tensile stress was very limited. These zones occur in the crests of slopes, except in the case of low horizontal to vertical stress ratios, in which case the tensile zone is in the floor of the pit. In contrast, very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. The large zone in which such extension failure could potentially occur in a 1200 m deep pit is typically more than 100 m horizontally behind the toe and about 400 m up the face from the toe. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning. Such ?strain bursting? produces easily measurable seismicity, events often being audible as well. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. With suitably orientated joints, extension strains are likely to manifest themselves in the opening up of such joints and hence in the loosening of the rock mass in a preferential orientation, with potential effects on groundwater flow patterns.

To simulate brittle rocks, a mixture of glastone, sand and water was used as a model material. Thin galvanized sheets were used to create joints in blocks made out of the model material. To investigate the failure modes and strength, both the intact material blocks as well as jointed model material blocks of size 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm having different joint geometry configurations were subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loadings. Results obtained from the intact model material blocks are used to validate a new intact rock failure criterion for biaxial loading. Results obtained from both the intact and jointed model material blocks are used to develop a strongly non-linear new rock mass failure criterion for biaxial loading. In this failure criterion, the fracture tensor component is used to incorporate the directional effect of fracture geometry system on jointed block strength. The failure criterion shows the important role the intermediate principal stress plays on rock mass strength. Zur Simulation spröder Gesteinsarten wurde ein Modellmaterial aus Dentalgips, Sand und Wasser hergestellt. Daraus wurden Blöcke gegossen, in denen mittels dünnen, galvanisierten Blechen Trennflächen erzeugt wurden. Die Blöcke mit Abmessungen von 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm wurden in einaxialen und biaxialen Druckversuchen belastet. Es wurde das Versagensverhalten und die Festigkeit von intakten Blöcken sowie durchtrennten Blöcken mit unterschiedlicher Trennflächengeometrie untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen der Versuche an intaktem Material wurde ein neues Versagenskriterium für biaxiale Belastungen validiert. Die Ergebnisse der Versuche an intakten und durchtrennten Blöcken wurden verwendet, um ein neues stark nicht-lineares Versagenskriterium für geklüftetes Gebirge unter biaxialer Belastung abzuleiten. Darin wird der Bruchtensor verwendet, um den Einfluss der Trennflächengeometrie auf die Festigkeit zu erfassen. Das Versagenskriterium stellt heraus, welche Bedeutung die mittlere Hauptspannung für die Gebirgsfestigkeit hat. Un mélange de platre dentaire, de sable et d’eau a été utilisé pour développer un matériau analogue des roches fragiles. De fines feuilles galvanisées permettent de créer des discontinuités représentatives des discontinuités naturelles dans des bloques fabriqués avec ce matériau analogue. Les modes de rupture et la résistance, tant pour le matériau intact que pour le matériau avec ses discontinuités, ont été étudiés sur des blocs de 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm soumis à des efforts de compression uniaxiaux et biaxiaux. Différentes configurations de géométrie de discontinuités ont été considérées. Les résultats obtenus à partir des blocs intacts permettent de vérifier un nouveau critère de rupture pour les roches intactes soumises à des efforts biaxiaux. Les résultats obtenus, tant avec les blocs intacts qu’avec les blocs avec discontinuités, sont utilisés pour développer un nouveau critère de rupture, fortement non linéaire, pour les massifs rocheux soumis à des chargements biaxiaux. Dans ce critère de rupture, un tenseur de fractures est introduit pour caractériser les effets directionnels de la géométrie des systèmes de discontinuité sur la résistance des blocs avec discontinuités. Ce critère de rupture démontre le rôle important de la contrainte principale intermédiaire sur la résistance des massifs rocheux.

Copper sulphate solutions are produced during the pressure leaching of first-stage leach residue in a typical base metal refinery process. Apart from impurities such as selenium and tellurium, this leach solution also contains other precious metals (Rh, Ru, and it) due to dissolution in the pressure leaching stage. Selenium and tellurium are removed from the leach solution by precipitation with sulphurous acid, since these elements negatively affect electrowinning. This study investigates the feasibility of modifying the Se/Te precipitation process step to achieve significant rhodium precipitation in addition to selenium and tellurium precipitation, in order to reduce the rhodium inventory of the process. Thiourea, S02, formaldehyde, formic acid, and sodium thiosulphate were evaluated to determine which of these reagents would achieve the highest Rh precipitation. Based on these screening tests, SO2 and thiourea were selected to be used as precipitation reagents in optimization tests. During these optimization tests, the operating temperature (80 to 150°C) and the amount of reagent added (80 to 140 per cent excess) were varied to evaluate the effects that these operating conditions have on the precipitation behaviour of Rh as well as Se, Te, Cu, and Ni, and to propose appropriate operating conditions. It was found that thiourea resulted in good Rh and Se precipitation (typically in excess of 90 per cent), but precipitated noticeably more copper and nickel from the solution than when SO2 was used. In addition, thiourea had poor Te removal characteristics. SO2 achieved a maximum of 70 per cent precipitation of the rhodium. Faster kinetics and a larger extent of Te precipitation were, however, observed when using SO2 compared to thiourea.

Carbothermal reduction of manganese oxides and manganese ores in the solid state was studied in hydrogen, helium and argon at different temperatures, ore compositions and carbon to manganese oxide ratios. Wesselsore (South Africa) and two grades of the Groote Eylandt ore (Australia) with different level of impurities were examined. Ores were characterised by XRD, X-ray fluorescence, optical microscopy and scanning electronmicroscopy. Isothermal and temperature programmed carbothermal reduction experiments were conducted in a fixed bed reactor in a vertical tube furnace, with on-line monitoring of gas composition by the CO-CO2 infrared sensor. The reduced samples were characterised by XRD, SEM and LECO analyses. Extent of reduction was calculated using data on the off-gas composition, and LECO carbon and oxygen contents in the reduced sample. Manganese oxides in the ore were reduced to a-Mn and carbides Mn23C6 and Mn7C3 depending on the carbon to ore ratio. "*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."

Ground behaviour in the vicinity of a roadway has been investigated using a physical model and in situ tests during a roof fall. It was discovered that behaviour of the ground is governed by irreversible displacements of adjacent rock clusters. The cluster is a short-living sector of a rock mass that moves as a solid body. For the lack of degree of freedom, the rock mass must be divided into clusters that are forced to move one after another in space and in time. These clusters permanently rearrange and reform during irreversible (inelastic) ground deformation. The crowded clusters have to yield to each other and alter their velocity and direction of movement to accommodate their motion into the excavation. Such behaviour involves uneven and irregular vertical deflection and the movement of adjacent rock blocks in the roof, sides and floor of an opening. Such movement destroys the symmetry of horizontal displacements with respect to the centre line of the opening. A set of indicators that a roof fall is imminent has been identified. Horizontal displacements and dilation must be controlled in order to maintain the stability of an underground opening. Such a state retains the self-supporting effect of the roof and contributes to rock bolts bearing capacity.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng.) Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Small and large welded aluminium specimens were tested in fatigue and the results compared with design curves for aluminium in specification BS8118. Metallurgical tests were also performed on the specimens in order to correlate microscopic and macroscopic phenomena. The small-scale fatigue test results were in reasonable agreement with results in BS8118, whereas the large-scale fatigue tests showed that BS8118 is conservative.
