Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

We show that the prioritization of business improvement and performance management decisions may be significantly improved by taking into account the systemic effects of changes made in a single process area. To do so we build a model of a mining value chain, taking into account consequential downtime that arises from downstream and upstream starvation and choking effects of each activity. Introducing the concept of internal capacity, this approach yields insight into the relative importance of key metrics such as loading and hauling rates. We suggest that a holistic view of this type should be a core component of business improvement and performance management decisions.

Oebswana's Jwaneng Mine (south-central Botswana) is the richest diamond mine? in the world and has been contributing substantial revenue to Botswana since the mine started operating in 1982. The resource consists of 3 separate volcanic pipes/vents namely North, South and Centre pipes (2 additional small kimberlite bodies have also been intersected within the mining pit) which erupted through Transvaal strata and the overlying Karoo sediments -245 million years ago. Although earlier drilling and geophysical surveys suggest that the 3 pipes extend to depths greater than 1 km below the surface, the resource is only at an indicated level of confidence to a depth of 400m, and mining activities will start exploiting the inferred resource material below 400m in 2014.

The theory of geostatistics covers a branch of .applied statistics aimed at a mathematical description and analysis of geological observations. Geostatistics can be used in pure geology (for example, for the analysis of trace elements in a metamorphic rock), in mineral exploration (for example, for the analysis of geochemical exploration data), as well as in mine valuation. This book is intended to provide a practical introduction to the theory of geostatistical methods of mineral evaluation. Over the years, various mathematical models have been developed to represent the distribution of values in mineral deposits. The simpler models are based on the assumption that the values are randomly distributed. Classical statistical methods, based on this assumption of the random distribution of values, are used to analyse mineral deposits to which these models apply or are assumed to apply. In all mineral deposits, however, one recognizes the presence of areas where the values are higher or lower than elsewhere. Also, the values of two samples in a mineral deposit are more likely to be similar if the samples are taken close together than if they are taken far apart. This indicates that there exists a degree of correlation between sample values, and that this correlation is a function of the distance between the samples. Models have been developed which take this correlation into consideration, with the degree of correlation between sample values being usually measured by the semivariogram function. In these models the fact that two samples taken next to each other will most probably not have the same value, must also be considered; even for very short distances the correlations are usually not perfect and a purely random component is present in the value distribution. The mathematical models will therefore assume the presence of two sources of variability in the values: a correlated component and a random component. Finally, one must consider the particular and very common case of mineral deposits in which the values present a systematic variation in space. This variation is usually referred to as a drift, or a trend. For example, the grade of an ore body may increase with depth of the ore, or it may decrease when one moves away from a central volcanic pipe. The earlier models did not give a satisfactory representation of drifts, and more complex models have been developed, in which three sources of variation are represented. These models are made up of: a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. The deterministic component is used as a model of the drift. The correlated component explains regular changes in values which are not represented by the drift. The random component represents variations which cannot be explained by any of the above factors. The simpler models, based on the assumption of a single random component, will be described first (Chapter 2). The models based on the hypothesis of the superimposition of a correlated component on a random component, will then be analysed in detail. These models are most commonly used in the analysis of mineral deposits (Chapters 3-1 I). Finally, how to deal with the presence of a drift will be briefly described (Chapter 12). This book has been written essentially for students in mining engineering and for mining engineers who are interested in the background to the theory of geostatistics as well as its practical applications. The assumption is made that the reader has an elementary knowledge of statistics. Some knowledge of linear algebra is useful in part of Chapter 9, and is necessary to read Chapter 12. A proof is given of all the equations related to geostatistics, and which are not usually found in elementary textbooks on statistics. Understanding of these proofs is not necessary for practical application of the theory, and the reader may wish to skip them on a first reading, concentrating attention on the numerous simple practical examples given. Although the theoretical geostatistician will not find much new material in this publication, it is anticipated that he will develop some interest in the practical approach chosen to prove the various geostatistical equations. Many people and institutions contributed to the preparation and completion of this work. I am much indebted to Dr D. G. Krige and the Anglo Transvaal Consolidated In- vestment Company Limited, who gave me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working on geostatistical problems, both theoretical and practical, during the time that I was in their employment. "Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

Discussion R. E. Rarnes (Member): The original concepts and the pioneering work now brought to the practical test stage by the Mining Research Laboratory team deserve our highest praise. The authors of this comprehensive paper rightly stress the urgency of establishing the extent to which the apparent potential can profitably be realised in practice. It is to be hoped that adequate funds will be made available by individual mining companies, the Chamber of Mines and manufacturers to attract the necessary staff and maintain the high rate of achievement of the last two years. From the Seventy-Eighth Annual Report of the Chamber of Mines and its members we see that, in 1967, with a Working Revenue of R759.8 million from gold and R54.6 million pit mouth coal sales and with profits from gold and uranium and pyrite of R307.9 million, only R1.9 million was spent by the Chamber on all forms of Research. It is considered unlikely that the associated mining companies and manufacturers exceeded this investment expenditure. Assuming a total of R4 million spent by the industry on Research and Development, this is less than half of 1 per cent of sales of gold and coal. This percentage, so low in comparison to North America and Europe, is no worse than that of Exploration expenditure which, in 1967, with South Africa&apos;s total mineral production of R1,287 million, was estimated to have been R6 million (Pretorius 1968). In a primary industry with ever present depletion of ore deposits and with cost escalation, expenditure on Exploration and on Research and Development is not a risky luxury but a tactical obligation. The potential rate of return on research expenditure into rock breaking is high. Stores consumed by gold and coal mines, members of the Chamber of Mines, totalled R316.2 million in 1967. Except for purchased power costing R42.2 million the highest cost group was explosives, drills and drill steel totalling R33.8 million or 10.7 per cent of the total stores consumed. In the paper under discussion it is claimed that the low &apos;effective stoping width&apos; should greatly reduce the likelihood of rock falls or rock bursts to the extent that permanent support can be dispensed with. Insofar as this narrow cut is only 12 in. in advance of the working area which, with a 10 in. channel, is unlikely to be much reduced in width from that achieved by current methods, this claim is not readily understandable. Were it to have been based upon the regional support gained from packed waste it would have been more acceptable. Pre-developed stope drives may give serious trouble at depth and for this reason it is questioned whether a stoping area can avoid periodic sub-development blasting-the spoil and fumes from which will interfere with the rock flow and continuous mining of the rock-cutter. If, in the mining method proposed by the authors, stope drives are cut as small as possible (6 ft by 6 ft) then 25 per cent of the total tons handled (excluding resued waste) and 5 per cent of the gold will be blasted conventionally in the stope. At this stage one cannot envisage tunnelling machines economically or practically capable of such work. The various methods described by the authors and subsequent contributors for breaking waste are most interesting. It was noted that the &apos;bull wedge&apos; and &apos;explosives&apos; in Fig. 1 of the paper were no further from the ideal point &apos;A&apos; than was &apos;cutting&apos;. The writer considers that the bold and imaginative steps taken by the Mining Research Laboratory Team, the mining companies and the manufacturers concerned will eventually lead to a successful rock cutting machine with universal application largely independent of rock type. This may take many years. In the meantime other methods of improving productivity of saleable metal by rock breaking teams should be investigated even if such methods have local applications only. In 1955 the writer conducted tests with a wire saw similar to those used in quarries in the Northern Transvaal and elsewhere. Jeppestown shale, the immediate footwall of much of the East Rand gold field, was cut at the rate of 6 in. per hour using sand, water and a special endless rope driven by a low h.p. motor. A hypothesis on its application was submitted to the Office of the Government Mining Engineer in 1955 and to other mining institutions in 1966 after the writer returned to South Africa. By inference, rope sawing was classed as less promising than other methods tested in the Orange Free State Goldfields (Parker 1969). With highly resilicified hanging and footwall quartzites this was not surprising and confirmed the writers findings when testing hanging wall quartzite from the East Rand in 1955. The relatively uniform conditions, the low strength, hardness, and silica content of the Merensky Reef platinum deposits (Gray and von Bardeleben 1969) and in particular, the existence of overlying Merensky pyroxenite (Cousins 1964) make this and the East Rand attractive areas for larger scale testing of wire saws. It is envisaged that in suitable rock types the 5/8 in. slot would be advanced down dip or down a minor dip. In undisturbed areas &apos;faces&apos; of up to 200 ft in length could be cut several feet in advance of breaking which could then consist of light blasting to the second free face or some of the methods now being tested for breaking waste in rock-cutting operations. A wire saw is an inexpensive and simple machine which, in some areas, could make significant and early gains in rock breaking efficiency as well as in ground and stoping width control.

The development of a cyanidation route for the treatment of gold-plant gravity concentrates is described. This work was carried out as a natural consequence of earlier improvements to the recovery of gold in the gravity sections of existing gold plants. Concern about the environmental aspects of the conventional amalgamation process was further motivation in the development of an alternative procedure. It was found that the partial pressure of oxygen in solution was the most critical reactionrate determining factor. The rate of gold dissolution was shown to be controlled by the reaction rate below approximately 25°C and by diffusion above that temperature. Thus, the efficiency of pulp agitation and oxygen partial pressure permitted a high degree of control over the rate of gold dissolution. The use of oxygen rather than air significantly increased the dissolution rate of both gold and silver. The solubilities of sodium, calcium, and potassium aurocyanide complexes under simulated reaction conditions were studied, and it was established that the values for the sodium and calcium complexes were limited, requiring the use of lower pulp densities and higher reaction temperatures for the treatment of very high-grade concentrates. The presence of excessive amounts of tramp iron in such concentrates of up to 25 per cent by mass was found to result in poor gold dissolution owing to the cementation of gold under certain reaction conditions. The maintenance of high oxygen partial pressures, together with high cyanide concentrations, high pH levels, and the presence of calcium in the system, all aided in passivating the tramp iron. Copper, gold, and iron were shown to be the main cyanide-consuming elements. Optimum gold dissolution was obtained in a closed bench-scale reactor incorporating a flotation-machine type of agitator for effective pulp agitation and oxygenation, the oxygen being recirculated. The reactor was designed to operate under a very small positive pressure. After reaction times of 2 to 6 hours at temperatures in the region of 30°C, both the gold and the silver dissolution averaged 99,S per cent. In the case of very high-grade concentrates, it was shown that gold could be floated in the same reactor by drawing off the flotation concentrate through a port in the reactor. A flotation recovery of 87,4 per cent of the gold in 3,9 per cent by mass was obtained. The recovery of osmiridium from cyanide-leach residues and the electrowinning of gold from the pregnant liquors were also considered as processing aspects in the treatment of gold-plant belt concentrates. Final table tailings with a gold concentration of 10to 12 gft were obtained. The results of the investigation strongly suggested that an alternative cyanidation route for the treatment of gold-plant concentrates was technically feasible, provided the system included effective agitation and oxygenation. In the case of lower-grade concentrates, cyanidation followed by the electrowinning of gold appears to be the simplest route, while, for high-grade concentrates, flotation and smelting of the concentrate followed by cyanidation of the flotation tailings are suggested. The use of oxygen rather than air for sparging the pulp would depend largely on the grade of material to be treated. A preliminary comparison of the costs related to the amalgamation and cyanidation processes for the recovery of gold from such concentrates indicated very similar capital and operating costs. It was concluded that other considerations, e.g. toxicity, safety, and lower labour requirements, were more important than such small cost differences. Furthermore, the &apos;opening&apos; of the gold-plant gravity circuit, which would be made possible by a cyanidation route, would further reduce the operating costs because of the subsequent decrease in the tonnage to be treated.

Rare earth elements (REE) are vital components in modern electronics and green technology products. Supply is tight and global demand is expected to increase, leading to high risk for the economic and national security of countries largely dependent upon foreign supplies. Recycling of REE from consumer and industrial waste materials is a possible way to help meet demand. We have shown previously that biohydrometallurgy can play an economically and environmentally sustainable role in REE recycling, particularly if agriculture or food wastes are used to produce organic acid bioleaching agents. A challenge for organic acid-based bioleaching is the incomplete conversion of the carbon substrate to an optimal organic acid biolixiviant with high REE extraction capability from a variety of REE-containing feedstocks (e.g., mining wastes, magnets from end of life products, spent batteries, etc.). To help meet this challenge a metabolic model was developed for Gluconobacter oxydans to identify options for improving sugar conversion to organic acids. Model predictions were consistent with laboratory data for the microbial consumption of glucose and production of gluconic acid, and suggested that providing growth conditions with relatively high C:N molar ratios could result in lower pH biolixiviant production and thus improve bioleaching. Provisions of adequate thrust Conclusions INTRODUCTION In South African gold mines some 100 million tons of rock are broken each year by drilling and blasting. Only minor improvements to this method of rockbreaking have been made since the general introduction of pneumatic rockdrills for stoping 50 years ago and, more recently, of drillsteels tipped with tungsten carbide. The combined total cost of drilling and blasting amounts to almost R0,50 per ton of rock broken, which is just short of one quarter of the direct cost of stoping or development. Rockdrilling accounts for about R0,25 of the total cost of rockbreaking, of which RO,12 represents labour costs and R0,13 the cost of drillsteels, rockdrill spares and power. Mine air compressors use over 7 X 108 kWh of electric energy a year, amounting to 7 percent of the total electric power used by the gold mining industry. The efficiency of percussive rockdrilling is, therefore, of considerable significance to mining costs. Over the past four years the Mining Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of S.A. has been engaged in experimental studies of percussive drilling. These experiments were conducted at test sites on Robinson Deep Gold Mine and Vlakfontein Gold Mine, made available by Gold Fields of South Africa, Limited. Three rockdrills, designated types A, Band C, of different manufacture, were used in the experiments which involved the measurement of the following operating characteristics: 1. Throttle air pressure 2. Applied thrust 3. Penetration rate 4. Air consumption 5. Blows per minute 6. Drill steel revolutions per minute. The results of these investigations are presented in three parts. Part I, "The theory of percussive rockdrill operation" which provides a concise, mathematical description of the performance of a percussive rockdrill in terms of its principal mechanical dimensions and operating conditions, and an analysis of the bit and gauge wear of drillsteels. Part II, "Measurements of percussive rockdrill performance" in which the experimental results are presented in terms of thrust-penetration rate curves at different throttle air pressures and throttle pressure-air consumption curves, which are shown to agree well with the predictions of theory. In addition, data relating gauge wear on the drillsteel and penetration rate to the distance drilled are discussed. Part III, "Practical implications" in which an analysis of the status of thrusting devices is made and the benefits that would derive from using uptimum thrusts are discussed.

The construction of one of the world&apos;s largest goldrecovery plants to treat run-of-mine ore is progressing on schedule at the President Brand Gold Mine in the Orange Free State. Designed to treat 390 kt per month, the plant will recover 96 per cent of the gold from the ore at a capital cost of 160 million rands in terms of January 1983 money. It will replace the existing gold-treatment installation, as well as provide a 30 per cent increase in capacity. The mining industry remains the backbone of many economies in the developing world. Its resurgence in Ghana since 1989 was driven by the global paradigm which emphasizes private sector-led development as the engine of economic growth in developing countries. The historical importance of mining in the economic development of Ghana is evident in the country?s colonial name, Gold Coast (Akabzaa T. and Darimani A., 2001). Ghana earned $2.5 billion from mineral exports in 2007. 20,000 people are employed in large-scale mining whilst 500,000 are employed in the small-scale sector. Mining contributes about 7% of Ghana?s total corporate tax earnings, 41% of total exports, 12% of revenue collected by the Internal Revenue Service and 5% of Gross Domestic Product (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2008). Gold dominates the mining sector and the country is Africa?s second largest gold producer after South Africa. Surface Mining, which refers to a method of extracting minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrows, requires a large tract of land for its operations (Wikipedia, 2008). There is therefore a continuous divergence of interest between land required for surface mining and other land uses such as farming and housing, among others. In recent years, surface mining has been promoted in many mining countries because of the following reasons: ?Cost considerations compared to underground mining; ?Safety considerations, compared to underground mining; ?Low grade ore which requires processing huge quantities; ?Location of the ore bodies; and ?Competition among gold producing countries for investors. This paper looks at the socio-economic impacts and challenges of surface mining by using Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. Tarkwa, Ghana as a case study. The company has a concession of about 208 sq km located in the heart of the Wassa communities in the Western Region of Ghana and undertakes surface mining like most of the other mining companies in the country. Gold Fields, Tarkwa mine produces 700,000 ounces of gold a year with the potential of increasing this output to 800,000 ounces after its current expansion programme. Some of the effects of surface mining identified were: 1. Relocation/Resettlement of host communities and its negative effects; 2. Disturbance to Flora and Fauna; 3. Disturbance to Sacred Places; 4. Land Degradation; 5. Noise and Air Pollution; and 6. Water Pollution. This paper sought to investigate the measures put in place by the government and the Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. to mitigate the above effects in order to ensure peaceful coexistence between the mining company and its host communities. It concludes that most mining companies presume the provision of socio-economic development in mining communities will lead to the company securing a social license to operate. This however is not true but rather effective community relations combined with socio-economic development. According to Gold Fields Ghana Ltds. model, this involves continuous community engagement, conflict resolution and comprehensive environmental monitoring programme which will all lead to effective community relations. The strategies to ensure socio-economic development involves community development programme, livelihood restoration programme and community training and employment. All these will then lead to sustainable development which will ensure the company?s social license to operate. Gold Fields? model is in line with the principles of responsible mining. With this model, the community feels they are part of the company and the social license of the company is guaranteed. Gold Fields? model, which has been tried and tested for the past five years, could serve as a template with suitable modification for local conditions for other mining countries where surface mines operate.

Heavy mineral deposits often contain relatively high levels of radioactive elements (thorium and uranium in particular).It is difficult to obtain clean separation of ilmenite and monazite (the main impurity mineral containing radioactive elements), and physical intergrowths of the two minerals are, in fact, not uncommon. As a result, ilmenite concentrates obtained from such deposits often contain high levels of thorium and uranium. Because of the large negative free energies of formation of ThO2and U3O8boththorium and uranium report to the slag during smelting and if an ilmenite concentrate contaminated with monazite is used to make high titania slag, the concentrations of these elements in the slag end up about 40% higher than in the ilmenite feed. Previous work, patented by RGC Mineral Sands Limited, and subsequently confirmed by Mintek, showed that radioactivity may be reduced by roasting an ilmenite concentrate with borax at 1000°C to 1100°C and leaching it with hydrochloric acid1. It is evident that the cost of an ilmenite roast/leach process will be high and there may be economic benefits in removing the radioactive elements from the slag instead (the volume of slag to be treated is smaller than the volume of ilmenite feed). To remove radioactive elements from the slag it is necessary to know how these elements occur in the slag. Inother words, the distribution of uranium and thorium between the various oxide, silicate and metallic phases in high titania slag must be determined. Once the deportment of thorium and uranium between the various phases ha sbeen determined, an appropriate process for slag purification can be developed. Test samples High-titania slag was prepared in a pilot-scale DC furnace from ilmenite concentrates with different levels of uranium and thorium. Subsequently, ten slag samples representing a range of compositions were selected for bulk chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro-analysis. The samples were crushed to a maximum particle size of 1 mm and from each sample a 20-kg batch was riffled out for analysis. Bulk chemical composition Chemical compositions of the samples selected for test work are given in Table I. TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, MnO, FeO and V2O5were analysed by ICP-OES, Na2O, CaO andCr2O3by atomic absorption spectroscopy and U and Th by XRF (the XRF detection limit for U and Th was around 4 ppm). The ?B? series has a higher silica content than the others as a result of small silica additions that were made during smelting. All samples have elevated alumina levels as a result of furnace refractory contamination during smelting. As expected, there is an inverse relationship between the concentrations of TiO2and FeO in the samples (Figure 1).The TiO2and FeO levels are similar to the levels found in industrial slags2. Extreme conditions of reduction under which reduction of more ?refractory? oxides (e.g., chromia, magnesia, silica, alumina and even urania and thoria) might take place were not explored in the study. Note that BB1and BBB1 contain more than 7% combined silica and alumina (SiO2as a flux addition during smelting, and Al2O3from refractory contamination) and they do not fall on the general trend defined by the other samples. The U and Th concentrations of sample E2 is noteworthy. In the preparation of slag E2, monazite concentrate was added to the ilmenite to increase the concentrations of radioactive elements in the slag. This was done primarily to facilitate the detection of Th and U during the phase chemical characterization of the slag. The Rossio railway tunnel was built in 1890 crossing several formations involving limestones, basalts and also sandy and clayey formations. Due to the fact that it is an old underground structure rehabilitation and repair works were performed, namely at Km 0,900 and in a zone crossed by a new tunnel from the Lisbon Metro. Reinforcement support systems were designed in the Rossio tunnel in order to prevent its stability. In this paper, repair works and anchor tests performed at km 0,900 are presented, as well as the monitoring system implemented in order to observe the structural effects induced by the construction of the works. For the interpretation of the obtained information complex 3D models was built, permitting the simulation of the sequential excavation scheme used, non-linear behaviour of the different formations, and the support systems used. The University of Kentucky (UK), with an enrollment of 25,891 in fall 2002, is a comprehensive, public land-grant university located in the Bluegrass Region of Central Kentucky. As the State’s flagship university, UK has long been involved in distance education, first through traditional correspondence courses, followed by use of videotape and satellite delivery in the 1970s and1980s, but soon supplanted by use of interactive television (ITV) and on-line course delivery in the 1990s to date. Today, UK Distance Learning Programs annually administers approximately600 course sections, with services provided to over 5200 enrollees. Courses are offered via six media: interactive video, Internet, on-site, satellite, open-air and cable television, and videotape, with hybrid delivery becoming increasingly popular. The University of Kentucky College of Engineering experience with distance instruction prior to 1985 was limited to videotape non-credit offerings. The Department of Mining Engineering, a small department in terms of numbers of both faculty and students, was a University pioneer in distance education. The first University degree program offered in its entirety by distance delivery(initially by itinerant faculty) was the Master of Mining Engineering. Satellite delivery from Lexington to Cumberland, Kentucky, was a welcomed change of delivery mode in 1987–88,resulting in six hours less travel time for faculty each week. Shortly thereafter, other initiatives directed toward fulfilment of its land-grant mission were undertaken by the College. Use of satellite for course delivery rapidly declined due to limited interactivity, in favour of compressed video and on-site instruction. Classroom sites in the Kentucky Tele-Linking Network (KTLN) now number over 200. The Network links schools, colleges and universities, as well as public and private agencies throughout the State. The KTLN supports voice, video, and data transmission in a uniformly-equipped environment. Beginning in the early 1990s, transfer-critical pre-engineering courses were delivered from Lexington to Kentucky’s community colleges with the largest pre-engineering enrolments. Success was limited, but lessons learned were invaluable. In 1996, the University of Kentucky College of Engineering was asked by the Kentucky Council on Higher Education (the predecessor to the Council on Postsecondary Education) to expand engineering education in Kentucky, first by initiating cooperative B.Sc. degree programmes in Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering on the campus of Paducah Community College (PCC), located 400 km from the UK campus in Lexington. The third partner in these programmes is Murray State University (MuSU), a public regional comprehensive university 80 km south of Paducah. The genesis of the new degree programmes, which were subjected to ABET review in October 2002, as well as a summary of the major accomplishments and challenges of the innovative programmes, will be offered. The limited use of distance technologies for course delivery in these B.Sc. degree programmes will be discussed. A ‘no-spin’ overview of other non-traditional distance-learning ventures within the College of Engineering will be chronicled, with an honest assessment of the motivation for these efforts and, where appropriate, their relative degree of success. Among these ventures are: a BScME and a Master of Engineering programme at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky, Georgetown, Kentucky; course exchange in Chemical Engineering between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville; an ITV-based Master of Engineering programme for practicing engineers in Kentucky; proposed joint-degree programmes in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with Western Kentucky University; and a proposed part-time MScME programme in Paducah, Kentucky, with a start date of August 2002, threshold enrolment permitting. In any mining enterprise, the extraction of the ore from the orebody is of vital importance. This activity is stoping. The gold mines of the Witwatersrand and its extensions in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, and Evander areas form the most extensive goldfield in the world. This address reviews stoping technology and improvements in this technology since the end of the Second World War. Although the reefs that make up the Witwatersrand orebody are uniquely extensive, they are not suited to mechanized mining. This is due to a number of factors such as the depth of the orebody, its narrowness, and the hardness and abrasiveness of the quartzite forming the orebody. The most notable improvements in stoping technology have been brought about because of our beter understanding of rock-engineering problems. This has resulted in beter layouts, stoping geometry, systems of aleviating rock stresses, and support systems. It has enabled the industry, at ever-greater mining depths, to maintain and even increase productivity. These improvements, based on rock engineering, have significantly reduced the accidents due to rockbursts. There are many diferences between today&apos;s stoping and that practised forty years ago. Panels are shorter, concentrated mining has superseded bench mining, and the support systems are certainly better. Yet the face scraper is still used extensively, as are pneumatic rock drills. Some innovative stoping systems that have given rise to improved productivity are discussed. Explosives technology has shown spectacular advances during the period under review. Sadly, our local industry has had little to do with this research and development, but has been most adaptive in using the new products on offer.
