"A renewed interest in nuclear power around the world in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is going to increase demand for uranium as fuel. This will result in more uranium being mined, which will in turn increase associated environmental pressures, such as fresh water use. A move to lower quality waters containing impurities such as chloride would help alleviate these pressures. In this work, we determined the uptake characteristics of weakly basic anion exchange resin Ps-EDA towards uranium from saline solutions in a dynamic flow column. Breakthrough curves were produced, with suppression of uptake being observed for chloride concentrations above 5 g L-1. Calculated resin saturation capacities at zero and 5 g L-1 chloride are comparable with literature values for strong-base anion exchange resins, and exceed those published for weak-base resins up to 20 g L-1 chloride. Data has been fitted to multiple breakthrough models, with the modified dose-response model most effectively predicting uranium recovery. The results show that the ethylenediamine functionality could be suitable for use in future uranium processing flow sheets where a high-saline lixiviant is used. IntroductionIon exchange (IX) is a key technology in the uranium mining industry and is well established for the extraction of uranium from both acidic and alkaline leach liquors (Edwards and Oliver, 2000). It was first employed in 1952 at the West Rand mine in South Africa (Ford, 1993; Taylor, 2016). H2SO4 and Na2CO3 are the most commonly employed lixiviants used to solubilize uranium in acidic and alkaline leach conditions respectively. The chemistry of these systems causes uranium to form anionic sulphate or carbonate complexes, which can be taken advantage of by anion exchange resins.Another major technology for the extraction and purification of uranium from leach liquors is solvent extraction (SX). This technique involves the extraction of uranium from the aqueous phase into an immiscible organic layer. Although this is a commonly used method, there are major drawbacks to it, including the use of large volumes of flammable solvents, solvent loss, phase disengagement, third phase formation, and the production of problematic degradation products (Veliscek-Carolan, 2016). These problems can be circumvented through the use of IX resins."

Short-term plans must meet the long-term goals while accounting for shovel selectivity, operational space, and scheduling restrictions. There are several approaches that deal with these issues to deliver a feasible short-term schedule. This paper compares two approaches based on mathematical programming to address the short-term mining cut definition and scheduling in an integrated way. They work by scheduling extraction to comply with long-term production goals, but they differ in how mining cuts are modelled. The first approach schedules Selective Mining Units (SMUs) but aggregates them around predefined locations. The second approach does not work on SMUs; it decides directly what mining cuts are to be used from a pre-defined set of shapes. It assigns a destination and schedules the extraction for the selected mining cuts. We applied both approaches in a real case study to compare their results in terms of profit, mining cut design, expertise needed, profit, and optimisation performance.

The transient infiltration and lubrication behaviour of slag during continuous casting of steel is important for billet quality. A two-dimensional coupled mathematical mould model was developed to investigate these phenomena. The accuracy of the model was verified by comparing the calculated slag consumption with measurements by the plant. The results show that the liquid slag is consumed from the middle and late period of positive strip time to the next early period of positive strip time, including the entire negative strip time. The maximum downward infiltration velocity and positive pressure in the slag channel is at the middle of the negative strip time. Increasing the positive pressure of the slag channel is conducive to lubrication. The shear stresses acting on the shell surface and at the mould side were determined by the lubrication slag consumption and total slag consumption, respectively, and gradually decreased with increasing slag consumption. The negative strip time was lengthened to increase the slag consumption and prolong the time near the maximum downward shear stress, so as to be conducive to the demould.

'Gee Whiz', a nationwide schools' science and technology competition, is being screened on SATY1 on Friday evenings at 18:00. Twenty-seven schools from al over South Africa are taking part in the series, which will run for 13 weeks. The participating schools were selected on the basis of their performance in the National Youth Science Olympiad and in Mintek's Minsa science competition, which has been organized on an annual basis since 1988.

Ore sorting is a technology that is increasingly used to process primary raw materials. Timeconsuming and expensive empirical state-of-the-art test work is carried out to assess whether the use of ore sorting for the enrichment of a particular ore makes technical and economic sense. With the innovative simulation-based approach presented here, it is possible to direct the selection of a suitable sensor based on quantitative mineralogical and textural data, thus avoiding much of the empirical studies. Required data can be collected quickly and cost-effectively using available methods of automated mineralogy. The obtained parameters such as mineral grain size distribution, modal mineralogy, mineral area and mineral density distribution have been utilised in this study to simulate the prospects of success of ore sorting, applying different types of sensors. Empirical tests with commercially available sensor systems have been conducted to experimentally validate the predictions of the simulations. The estimation of the target mineral grade can be further optimised by the use of machine learning algorithms for the integration of automated mineralogy data and sensor data. The approach can easily be adapted to other types of raw materials and thus has great potential to become a key technology for the optimisation of processing experiments. The objective of this study is to improve the shrinking core model for particles with a particle size distribution and clarify the activation mechanism of rare earth elements dissolution by mechanochemical activation. To achieve this objective, the method, called the doubly integrated micromodel, was applied for a shrinking core model in this study. This method consists of integrating the batch leaching rate of a single particle over the distribution of both feed particle size and reactor residence time to arrive at the fraction unleached. The usefulness of the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel was confirmed by comparing it with a shrinking core model. To apply the shrinking core model improved by doubly integrated micromodel to rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores by mechanochemical activation, leaching experiments were performed for grinding samples by planetary ball milling. The reaction equation of mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling for weathered residual rare earth ores was investigated by x-ray absorption fine structure analysis. As a result of a kinetics study, the rate-determining process of leaching changed from reaction to diffusion reaction control by planetary ball milling. Based on these results, it was revealed that the main mechanism of activated rare earth elements dissolution from weathered residual rare earth ores was a mechanochemical reaction by planetary ball milling. The prototype and test results of the instrument for quick determination of incombustible content in deposited dust as a protection against coal dust explosion propagation are presented. Presently existing methods do not permit to obtain quick information about incombustible content, needed for the proper protection of workings. As the operating principle for the e instrument the dependence of reflection of infrared radiation intensity on incombustible content in the sample is chosen. The construction is based on the modern electronics. The measurement will be done at the sampling site. The range of the instrument is 0-100% of incombustible, direct reading, autonomous supply, weight no more than 0.5 kg, and is intrinsically safe according to EN Standards. During the Conference the instrument will be commercialized.

This paper reviews the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Bill of 2006, identifies potential areas that require further consideration by the National Treasury and, where appropriate, offers alternatives. At its basic level a royalty regime consists of two elements: the base and the rate that must be applied to the base. Deciding on an acceptable royalty rate is a complex matter and can be done only after extensive analysis of all variables affecting the competitiveness of the regime. The proposed royalty rates are in the range of zero to five per cent and are based on sales revenue. It is argued that future investment patterns are more likely to be influenced by market cycles and commodity prices than policy events. Inevitably the current boom in the minerals sector will come to an end and the success of the proposed regime will be known only when profit margins are under pressure. Policy makers must therefore have the long run in mind when developing policies that affect the ability of industry to do business, without the need to renegotiate each time there is a change in the market. A long-run policy must be sufficiently flexible to allow for consistently fair sharing ratios and splitting of revenues between government and industry. Although broadly in line with international practice, the current version cannot be regarded as internationally competitive and efficient. In order for the royalty bill to become internationally competitive, promote beneficiation of mineral production and adequately compensate the State for the loss of a national resource, the National Treasury should heed the following main recommendations in this review: 1. Abandon the notion that each mineral product must have its own royalty rate; 2. Introduce an NSR type royalty that allows for value-addition costs to be deducted from the base; and 3. Provide for automatic relief through the use of a sliding-scale mechanism based on ability to pay, e.g. the X-Factor used in the gold mining tax formula.

In May of 1980, a mine operated by Belmoral Mines Ltd experienced a failed crown pillar, resulting in the death of eight miners and putting sixteen others in harm?s way. The Ferderber mine was located in the Val d?Or region of the province of Quebec in Canada, and had been under development for 19 months and production for 9 months, since the opening of the portal. The crown pillar separating the 1?7 level from overlying overburden ultimately failed, permitting an estimated 1.5 million cubic feet of liquefied sediment to gain entry into the mine. This paper back-analyses the cave-in by applying decision error theory, in an examination of the organizational culture and the collective decisions contributing to the cave-in disaster. A case will be made for a greater understanding of mining methodology, geomechanics and risk assessment when operating in such challenging geologic conditions. Boundary condition and decision (BCD) analysis will be introduced as an innovative new method for the analysis of mine accidents and incidents. It will also be shown that BCD analysis can be applied to any event in an enterprise for which standards, norms or legislation exists. A cognitive profile will be presented that provides insight into the safety ethos existing within the Ferderber mine organization at the time of the tragedy.

The feasibility of employing a multi-stage column for the recovery of gold from cyanided pulps using extruded carbon was investigated on a pilot-plant scale. It was anticipated that the column contactor would have certain advantages over conventional carbon-in-pulp plants. The feed pulp was screened to remove particles larger than 200 µm and was diluted to a solids concentration of about 23 per cent. The column was operated continuously for 24 days at a pulp flowrate of about 60 l/min and a carbon flowrate of 44 litres per day. The average gold concentrations in the barren pulp 12 hours and 24 hours after the carbon transfer were 0,012 and 0,031 mg/l respectively. The average gold concentration in the solution phase in the feed was about 2,0 mg/L. The average gold Loading on the carbon was 6290 g/t. Calcium carbonate was removed from the loaded carbon by treatment with 0,5 bed volumes of 2,8 per cent hydrochloric acid solution at ambient temperature. The calcium concentration was reduced from about 17 000 to about 500 g/t The carbon was eluted by the Zadra procedure at atmospheric pressure. The results of the elution were highly satisfactory, the gold concentration being reduced from about 6000 to about 20 g/t in 48 hours. The eluted carbon was regenerated in a Rintoul kiln at about 700°C. The activity of the regenerated carbon was found to be at least as high as that of fresh carbon.

The classic technique to remove impurities in a cobalt stream is selective precipitation. This is usually followed by re-leaching to produce an advanced electrolyte for cobalt electrowinning. Although this technique ensures an adequate cobalt concentration in the electrowinning circuit, some of the consequences include unwanted losses through the numerous selective precipitation steps resulting in lower recoveries. One plant that currently utilizes selective precipitation is the Luilu Metallurgical Plant (Luilu) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This paper evaluates the benefits of using solvent extraction technology as a purification step in the Luilu Process with the aim of further increasing the overall cobalt recovery and to ensure that a suitable cobalt concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. The implementation of a solvent extraction-electrowinning process is found to be beneficial in terms of achieving improved recoveries and cobalt cathode quality, however there are many other factors that impact the success of converting from the classic precipitation process used at Luilu.

Geological, tectonic, geochemical and geophysical data were utilized for the mineral resource assessment of the Biga Peninsula in NW Turkey. During the deductive phase of the project multivariate statistical methods were applied to accentuate characteristic parameters which sufficiently describe the different types of Pb - Zn mineralization. The parameters most likely to be indicative of mineral occurrences were determined. In the following prognostic phase these parameters were further statistically treated to determine favourability indexes for the occurrence of a deposit within each cell of the training area. Preliminary results of probabilistic, univariate and multivariate methods are presented.

A study was made of the performance of a rod mil operating without liter bars and with different arrangements of liter bars in the lining. . The results show that striking improvements in performance, increased throughput, and reduced consumption of liner metal and electrical energy can be obtained by a change in the geometry of the liter-bar arrangements within a mil. Rod mils of equal size fitted with the same arrangement of liter bars but operating at different speeds presented apparent anomalies in the relative consumption efficiency of electrical energy for the production of material smaller than 75 µ m. Marked savings in the consumption of liner metal were achieved by the use of an arrangement of alternating lines of higher and lower liter bars. A study of the relative performances of two large tube mils showed that the use of liter bars in one of the mils resulted in a marked reduction in the consumption of liner metal and electrical energy per ton of material smaller than 75 µ m in the product.

In mine production scheduling problems are well-known, where most are categorised into deterministic and non-deterministic NP-hard problems because of their complexity. Many researchers have attempted to solve the problem by applying various optimisation techniques. While using traditional methods they observed extreme difficulty in solving highly complex problems. In the 1990s, many researchers addressed long-term production scheduling (LTPS) by using simulated annealing, the genetic algorithm, the tabu search algorithm, and the ant colony algorithm. These algorithms are known as the meta-heuristic algorithms, and have proved to be the most efficient algorithms for solving LTPS thus far. The firefly algorithm is one of the best methods for visualising problems related to LTPS, and provides the best possible optimisation. It is one of the simplest methods, and easy to apply to any NP-hard problem. The experimental, and comparison with other recently published algorithms shows that the proposed algorithm is feasible, and is an effective approach for long-term production scheduling problems. The results indicated that a better solution is obtained by the proposed method, compared to other methods in terms of cumulative net present value, and average ore grade. Additionally, the CPU time via the proposed model is roughly 2.52% higher than the other method.

There are factors distinct from the mode of mechanical extraction that may have considerable influence on its prospects for extensive adoption; the rockburst factor is one of these. REPLY BY H.H. HAASE AND R.G.B PICKERING We agree with Professor O'Connor that, in conventional gold-mining operations, a disproportionate number of seismic events occur in the period immediately following a blast; rockburst activity follows the same pattern, and it has been calculated that, if the rockburst peak were spread evenly across the day, the rockburst exposure of stope workers would nearly double.

The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

The integration of various highly sophisticated IT applications has been implemented at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine, a new platinum mine in the Anglo Platinum Group. This system is required to assist with compiling the necessary geological and grade information together with safety, environmental, ventilation, rock engineering and logistical constraints, to allow the design of the appropriate mining layout, to schedule this design, provide the necessary output for technical review and costing as well as budgeting to allow medium- and long-term business planning. In addition the production management and short-term planning needs must be met. This includes the plotting of all underground and surface infrastructure and excavations, giving the necessary mining and best cut instructions, daily production management, ore reserve and grade management as well as assisting with budgetary management. In addition all safety, health, environment and risk assessment requirements and legal requirements have to be met. The system at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine has met these criteria. An International Ferro-alloys Congress, arranged by the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the National Institute for Metallurgy, will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in April 1974. The technical programme, occupying five days, will cover the following topics in relation to all ferro-alloys: 1. Burden preparation, blending, pelletization, handling, reducing agents. 2. Electric smelting furnaces-design, operation, management,- smelting optimization, shop practice, refractories. 3. Mineralogy, reduction behaviour, smelting reactions, slags. 4. Automation, Pollution control. 5. Applications, trends in comsumption, trends in composition specifications. There will be no parallel sessions. Papers in the above topics are invited; review papers will also be welcome. Proposed titles and abstracts in not more than 200 words should be submitted before the 30th of November, 1972, to The Chairman, Programme Committee, INFACON 74, Private Bag 7, AUCKLAND PARK, South Africa. The abstracts will be considered during January 1973, and papers accepted for the Congress must be submitted in final form before the 31st of July, 1973. The proceedings of the Congress will be published as a special volume. There will be a series of post-Congress tours to ferroalloy plants and other places of both technical and scenic interest.
