Interparticle breakage is the main crushing mode of an inertia cone crusher according to its working principle and feeding condition. In this paper the breakage behaviour of an inertia cone crusher is investigated, based on energy controlled compression combined with the vibration theory, rather than geometry controlled compression (form conditioned) which plays a major role in conventional eccentric cone crushers. The effect of feeding and operating conditions on breakage behaviour was described quantitatively from the perspective of energy consumption and product size distribution. The influence of feeding conditions, discharge size settings and vibration exciter speeds on the crushing process and product quality has been studied according to the results of laboratory crushing experiments. The results of the experiments show that the particle size of broken products becomes finer with the decrease of a discharge gap within the gap range selected by the experiment. The product size increases significantly when the gap approaches the upper limit of 6 mm. The variation of eccentric speed has a more prominent effect on reducing the product size compared with the change of discharge gap. The change in product size is not apparent when the eccentric speed rises to a certain level. The throughput of an inertia cone crusher is sensitive to the change of discharge gap, which increases linearly with the discharge gap and decreases with the eccentric speed. Empirical pillar design methods are commonly used in the mining industry. The parameters within which these methods are valid are frequently unknown to the user or ignored. In addition, empirical design may not consider essential parameters such as blasting effects, orebody dip and the presence of geological structures, which all adversely affect the stability of the pillars. This can result in potentially serious pillar design strength over-estimates. Although the commonly based tributary area method is generally conservative, as the spans are seldom that large relative to the depth, failing to consider other relevant parameters can result in errors. Problems associated with an under-designed pillar can range from a local pillar collapse to a catastrophic chain reaction collapse (or run). Over-designed pillars are generally safe but reduce the extraction of the orebody, thus adversely affecting the profitability of the mining operation. We used laboratory tests and numerical modelling to understand the effects of pillar orientation, blasting and the presence of discontinuities on pillar strength. Reduction factors were developed with these models to be implemented in conjunction with the existing empirical pillar design methods. For any pillar or mine design, once it is implemented, the actual performance of the system must be checked regularly by observation and monitoring and adjusted if needed. The pillar design approach outlined in this paper can better optimize the pillar mining method by considering other generally ignored but important parameters, thus improving safety, productivity, and economic aspects.

"Accurate delineation of the contact between a kimberlite pipe and country rock at production level depths is a challenge due to limited geological data. Geological information is obtained from widely spaced diamond core boreholes which are drilled either from surface or from higher mining levels within the pipe. Kimberlite pipe/country rock contacts are notoriously irregular and variable, further reducing the confidence in contact positions defined by the drill-holes. At Finsch Diamond Mine (FDM), the opportunity arose to further improve the confidence in the contact positions relative to the planned slot (end) positions of each sublevel cave tunnel during the development stage of these tunnels. As a result, the accuracy of the 3D geological model has improved.The use of diamond drill core for this purpose is expensive due to site establishment requirements. The lengthy time taken during site establishment also delays the development of tunnels and support cycles, thereby extending the completion dates. FDM has reduced delays during development by adopting percussion drilling, in conjunction with gamma ray logging. The S36 drill rig is mounted on a moveable platform and does not require a costly and lengthy site establishment. The holes are generally drilled (0°/flat) on grade elevation, and these holes could also be drilled from the rim tunnels (developed in waste) into the kimberlite pipe. A single-boom production drill rig is normally used to drill holes about 20 m in length.On completion of the contact delineation drilling, gamma logging of the holes is conducted using the GeoVista geophysical sonde (or probe) to log the natural gamma signature of the dolomite/ kimberlite contact. The advantage of this tool is that the readings are continuous within centimetre intervals, and due to contrasting characteristics between kimberlite (rich in clay minerals) and dolomite, the contact position can be determined accurately. The better definition of contact positions also adds value to tunnel stopping distance in terms of developing the tunnel’s slot at the optimum distance from the contact (easier blasting of longhole rings, avoidance of contact overbreak and premature waste ingress, and other matters relating to extraction of ore from these tunnels). This method is highly successful and has reduced development costs (on-time completion), improved definition of the pipe’s contact position for geological modelling, improved blast design, and mitigated early waste ingress by maintaining the contact’s integrity."

The extent of ground movements and stress concentrations in the vicinity of the reef in the deep mine-shafts used in the South 4frican gold-mining industry have led to the requirement that special tower structures be developed to span the reef intersection zone in several new shafts. So that structural engineers are able to design these towers, it is necessary to model the dynamic behavior of conveyances traversing them in some way, to provide a means to determine the magnitude of the forces generated. This paper describes the development of two such procedures. The first is a numerical method, utilizing a step by- step integration technique to track the motion of a conveyance through a tower. This technique has been implemented in a computer program, and some results are given.

Diamonds are mined from ancient raised beach deposits in southern Namibia where complex geological controls have resulted in patchy diamond distribution, largely related to irregularities (trapsites) in the bedrock. The distribution of the number of diamonds per sample is a discrete, reverse- J shape distribution which can be characterized by two parameters. These parameters have been transformed into a Beta and Theta Contribution which can be interpreted as reflecting the 'quantity' and 'quality' of the trapsites. The relationship of statistical parameters, obtained during the sampling of an ore deposit, to the geology of the deposit is an important element of ore reserve estimation. The large-scale regional trends in the contributions have been explained in terms of the geology.

The rising demand for lithium-ion batteries, coupled with international climate targets, emphasises the need for circular economy and zero-waste recycling approaches. However, so far, no industrial-scaled solutions are available that fulfil global recovery targets. Therefore, a novel pyrometallurgical reactor was developed at the Chair of Thermal Processing Technology at Montanuniversitaet Leoben to avoid lithium slagging and recover volatile elements via the gas phase. Nevertheless, previous results show that several impact factors, including interfering elements or pre-treatment steps, strongly limit the recycling efficiency of black mass. To simulate the black mass and provide feedback on possible influences of pre-treatment steps, cathode material from production with additives of interfering elements was analysed regarding melting behaviour. The results show that formation of a further processable alloy was increased by almost 50% when pretreatment steps were excluded, indicating pre-treatment steps as a major influence to be considered within this specific recycling route.

Bioleaching, one of the several important processes of biohydrometallurgy is an accepted technique for the extraction of desired metals from sulphide ores. Although the mechanism is well understood, the slow metal extraction rate due to passivating layer and ferric ion precipitation, especially in a typical chalcopyrite leaching, impact negatively on the overall efficiency of the process. Iron precipitates are common in many biohydrometallurgical operations and these precipitates represent the exit route for undesired iron, alkali ions or sulphate ion from the processing circuit. While there have been reports on approaches to slow the formation of these precipitates by manipulation of various operating conditions such as pH, redox potential and temperature, the precipitates become highly significant over the long term in the continuous operation of bioleaching and may render heap impermeable. Although there is evidence supporting the nature of the passivation to be precipitates of iron, their scavenging mode of reducing extraction efficiency is still not well understood. This paper thus discusses iron precipitation in biohydrometallurgical processes, including its formation and significance on bioleach processes. The paper also details the associated passivating species identified with heap bioleaching of sulphide minerals and provides some insight into sorption mechanism that limits metal recovery in a typical bioleach operation. The influence of two weeks of microclimate cooling on the state of heat acclimatization by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), A. J. S. BENADE, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), and W. H. VAN DER WALT, B.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor) Five volunteer Black subjects were acclimatized according to the climatic-room acclimatization procedure, and their states of heat acclimatization were determined by the usual heat-stress test. The subjects thereafter wore pre-frozen jackets in a somewhat higher environmental temperature (33,9/35,6 °C). stepping at the same rate as before for four hours a day for fourteen days. The heat-stress test was repeated and followed by a similar test at the higher environmental temperature. It was found that fourteen days of microclimate cooling in a very hot environment had no adverse effect on the degree of heat acclimatization. The sweat rates during microclimate cooling remained high, even though no sweating is possible beneath the pre-frozen ice-jacket. which indicates that there is an increase in sweat rate from the areas of exposed skin.

This title of is not that originally chosen for the Colloquium, which was 'A high gold price'. Such a title would have been unfortunate because it would have related the Colloquium only to the high gold price of the past two years, which reached the dizzy peak of 850 dollars per ounce in January 1980. The chosen title is, of course, the right one because it places the whole problem in the right perspective. It relates to a situation that has occurred many times before. Over the course of the past century, the gold price has periodically been inhibited from rising, so that it has undergone a succession of stepwise increments. With each increase, the relationship of the working cost to the gold price alters, and gives rise to a jump in ore reserves. Award for CMI fuelling technique Consolidated Metallurgical Industries Limited - the Lydenburg-based ferrochromium producer in the J.C.I. group - was one of the five recipients of the 1981 National Productivity Institute annual award.

Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

Ferricyanide ()()*is one of the most stable cyanometallic complexes present in the gold mining effluents. This cyanocomplex is hard to degrade by natural attenuation and generates a negative impact on aquatic environments. Although free cyanide (CN-) can be obtained by acidifying the solution, the CN- is lethal for all forms of life. The oxidation of ()()* in a typical photocatalitic system was evaluated with the addition of H2O2. To verify the degradation, chemical parameters, such as free cyanide, the formation of ammonia, nitrate, and total iron were analysed at the end of the process. The degradations obtained were up to 70% in a heterogeneous photocatalysis system with TiO2, and a low rate of dissociation was observed by photolysis. The best result was achieved with the H2O2 and TiO2 photocatalytic system, and the stoichiometric concentration was about 2.5 times less than the peroxide used in the real gold mining industry, reaching 83% degradation. The photocatalytic process obtained less toxic byproducts than the original synthetic ferricyanide used as mining wastewater. JournelIn his presentation Mr Wiik said that unrolling could be regarded as a reversal of the natural process of folding, so that the aim of an unrolling procedure would be the reconstruction of original pre-tectonic conditions. While simply formulated, this aim might not always be achieved. The geometrical relationship between points on the deformed surface and corresponding points on the original surface is process-dependent, and a true reconstruction could be achieved only if the deformation history were known in detail.In this computer unrolling procedure all these complexities were ignored. Referring to one particular marker horizon, Mr Wiik said that it was assumed in the procedure that this marker was deposited as a horizontal stratum and that it had subsequently been deformed by simple flexure-type folding.The procedure allowed the geologist to incorporate his knowledge and conception of the deposit through repeated re-contouring with dummy points. This 'manumatic' aspect of the procedure had proved invaluable, not only in resolving specific unrolling problems but also in making the system more acceptable to the geologists in general.Unrolling served towards removing what might be termed `tectonic noise' superimposed on the primary distribution patterns for regionalized variables such as metal content and orebody thickness. From this point of view, variograms derived on the basis of unrolled-plan co-ordinates should be more meaningful in terms of depositional environment than are variograms calculated from a normal map projection.Mr M. M. Oosterveld remarked that it appeared from the paper that there were problems in applying the unrolling technique to ore reserve calculation, and asked whether there were not other methods that might be used for that purpose.Mr Wiik replied that at present unrolling played only a minor role in practical ore reserve estimation within Roan Consolidated Mines, Limited. The techniques currently in use differed from one orebody to another, but in general they involved projection onto a vertical longitudinal section or a horizontal plan, with subsequent grid interpolation by means of a standard computer contouring package."

Mines of Southern Kuzbass working out, basically, coal formations of flat seams. Seams, as a rule, are inclined to self-ignition. Detection at early stages of the centers of endogenous underground fires has great value for safe conducting mountain works. One of methods of detection of an early stage of underground fires in the worked out space is the method of superficial radon survey. In the report the method is de-scribed and examples of superficial radon survey on concrete layers are given.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusions. Development of the main substance. Conclusions. in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publicatiol1 of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometer range of 100 nanometres. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles and because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles make it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. DPM is a significant health hazard in underground mining operations, where the use of dieselpowered equipment in confined spaces can lead to high levels of exposure among people working in these environments. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), DPM has been linked to severe health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of lung cancer. Effective management of DPM is essential not only for protecting people’s health but also for ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining operational efficiency, and safeguarding the long-term viability of mining companies.

ORANGE FREE STATE BRANCH Proceedings of the Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the Branch was held in the St. Helena Club on Tuesday, 3rd October, 1972 at 8.00 p.m. Mr J. M. Meyer was in the chair. METALLURGISTS AND COMPUTERS An address delivered at the Annual General Meeting of the O.F.S. Branch by Prof D. D. Howat. Most men who remain in mining and metallurgy like their jobs. There are many times when you say to yourself or to your wife - 'Anybody can have my job - if they want it'. You feel so fed up and frustrated everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.

Written contribution by J.F. Curtist The paper is an interesting exercise in the application of mathematics to a theoretical situation presumed to oc¬cur underground. However, some of the assumptions on which the calculations are based are unlikely to occur in any actual mining situation. Assumptions made in the paper Objections to these assumptions are noted seriatim. (1) `it is assumed that any loading-rate effect will be small and can be ignored' (p. 3). A loading rate of the order of 50 kN-12 per cent of the maximum load-is customary to prevent the props being dislodged by the blast. (2) `it is unlikely that all the props will be installed with their full stroke available, but for the purpose of this analysis, it is assumed that this is the case' (p. 3). A more reasonable assumption would be that, with the most careful selection of prop length and the most rigid control of stope width, the available stroke length would on average be reduced by the order of 70 mm on installation-20 per cent of full stroke. (3) `each support unit supports a block of 3,3 m2 bound¬ed by vertical fractures with zero cohesion that are parallel and at right-angles to the stope face respec¬tively' (p. 5). Joughin and Jager have shown this to be an unwar¬ranted assumption in respect of the positioning, the direction, and the dip of the fractures present in a stope in rockburst conditions. If, as assumed, there was `zero cohesion' between such blocks, the removal of a hydraulic prop in row 3 supporting such a block would ensure that it fell out before a profile prop could be installed in the same position. (4) `the height of each of these blocks is 3,0 m, the volume of each block is 9,9M3, the mass of each block is 27 225 kg' (p. 5). The concept of individual props being affected by dis¬crete blocks of known and uniform dimensions of relatively low ground velocities (less than or equal to 2,16 m/s) acting in line with the axis of the prop is one that lends itself to neat mathematical calcula¬tions. It does not, however, bear much similarity to the actual conditions that are exposed underground in excavations where rockbursts occur. This investigation aimed to simulate the experiments performed by Nic Gay (Gay, N.C.1976. Fracture growth around openings in large blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. International journal of Rock Mechanics and Minining Sciences and Geomechical Abstracts, vol. 13. pp. 231-243) on fracture growth around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression, using the Elfen discrete element code. The results of the physical experiments indicated a number of trends that were successfully replicated in the numerical simulations, including crushing ahead of the face, the formation of a sub-vertical tensile fracture at centre-span, the formation of groups of fractures originating from the crushed face zone, the formation of large corner-to-corner fractures which precede sample failure, and linking of slot corner and sample corner fractures leading to sample failure. In addition, other features were apparent that were not reported by Gay. It is believed that these took the form of conjugate shear fractures (as reported by Gay in a previous paper) and other features that may have been altered or inhibited by the presence of pre-existing structure in the physical samples. It was found that the samples, though nominally made up of the same rock type, must have had significantly differing properties. The presence of pre-existing structures may have contributed to this discrepancy. Strain measurements from the physical experiments were reasonably well matched, except where the gauge lay directly in the path of advancing fractures.
