The problem addressed is that of estimating grade differences between sub- divisions of a new gold mining prospect when only borehole results are available. Such differential grade estimates are required in choosing the best area for initial production, and in defining the grade profile over the mine's life for purposes of feasibility studies. It is also often necessary to differentiate between the grades and hence the values of subareas, owned by separate companies, for the purpose of fixing relative share participation percentages in the new mining company. It is shown that exaggerated grade differentials will be obtained from grade estimates of the subareas based only on boreholes within each such subarea, respectively, and that it would be more realistic to apply some 'smoothing', preferably by kriging. This is feasible because the lognormal-de Wijsian model can be used to give an indication of the spatial structure for the boreholes, even where they are spaced far apart; also the degree of 'smoothing' indicated is shown to be relatively insensitive to inaccurate estimates of the relevant semivariogram parameters.

Rock mass classification systems are extensively used in rock engineering design work, and mine design is no exception. Among the systems most widely used for mining-related design work are the NGI 0-system (Barton et al., 1974), the RMR system (Bieniawski, 1976), the MRMR system (Laubscher and Taylor, 1976) and, more recently, the GSI system (Hoek et al., 1998). Classifying the rock mass is widely seen as being the fieldwork required to characterize the rock mass and enable the application of empirical design methods associated with the different classification systems. This paper argues that it is fundamentally important to recognize the distinction between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification. These two processes should, in most cases, be separated from each other. Rock mass characterization should be used to determine the intrinsic properties of the rock mass independently of the application; i.e. independent from the infrastructure to be designed, the size, shape, and orientation of the excavation(s) or pillar(s), etc. Rock mass characterization should also be compatible with most classification systems and empirical design methods to be used. Rock mass characterization is the background fieldwork required to perform rock mass classification and/or engineering design work. Rock mass classification is the subsequent step to the characterization, and an integral part of the design process. Parameters that vary according to the design, such as the relative orientation of geological structures compared to the opening or the mine-induced stresses, should be calculated as part of the rock mass classification and design process, rather than during the rock mass characterization process. The failure to distinguish between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification can lead to major design errors and poor results.

In late 1997 a request was received to assist with determining the powered support unit (shield) load capacities for the planned 2 seam short wall. This project had a number of aspects which made it attractive to utilize numerical modelling in conjunction with other more conventional design tools in the design of the shields. Amongst these were: The 2 seam panels were to be laid out about 25 m below the previously short walled 4 seam, the 4 seam had in turn been over-mined by the 5 seam long wall, the proposed face height of the 2 seam short wall was 5.5 m while the 4 seam had been mined at 4 m. The top seam in the area (5 seam) had been mined at between 1.5 and 2.2 m high, the face conditions with about 95 m of broken material applying dead weight loading to the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden septum were hard to predict and cyclical loading due to the presence of strong sandstone bands in the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden. The basic thrust of the study was to take the known, and successful, situation (4 seam short wall) and carry out comparative modelling to enable prediction of likely 2 seam conditions. Some two dimensional aspects studied were: 5 m goaf hanging up behind shields, stresses in beams to determine likely first goaf roof span, stresses in cantilever beams to asses cyclical loading due to sandstone bands in the interburden being loaded by the overlying goaf and stresses on chain and crush pillars adjacent to the goaf edge. Three dimensional aspects that were investigated included: Load distribution along face for close goafing and 5 m goaf hang-up and load in a 1 m wide rib modelled in the position of the powered support units. From the modelling it was possible to determine the optimal shield leg capacity of the new 2 seam equipment. These outputs were used when drawing up the technical specifications for manufacture of the new equipment. The face was successfully commissioned in August 2002. Certains aspects de ce projet le rendaient intéressant pour utiliser la modélisation numérique en même temps que d’autres méthodes conventionnelles pour la conception des boucliers. Parmi ces aspects se trouvaient : Les panneaux de la couche 2 devaient être placés environ 25 m au dessous de la couche 4 courte taille ; la couche 4 avait été remplacée par la couche 5 longue taille ; la hauteur de taille proposée pour la couche 2 courte taille était 5.5 m, tandis que la couche 4 avait été exploitée à 4 m. La couche supérieure de la région (couche 5) avait été exploitée entre 1.5 et 2.2 m de hauteur ; il était difficile de prédire les conditions de taille, avec environ 95m de matériaux cassés ajoutant une charge morte à la plaque de séparation entre les couches 2 et 4 et un chargement cyclique causé par des bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau 2-4. L’idée principale de l’étude fut de prendre la situation connue et réussie (couche 4 courte taille) et de faire une modélisation comparative pour prédire les conditions probables de la couche 2. Certains des aspects à double dimension qui furent étudiés étaient : Un accrochage de remblai de 5m derrière les boucliers ; contraintes dans les poutres pour déterminer le premier intervalle probable entre remblai et toit ; contraintes dans les poutres en porte-à-faux pour évaluer le chargement cyclique causé par les bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau qui est accablé par le remblai et les contraintes sur les piliers par chaîne et d’écrasement adjacents au bord du remblai. Aspects à trois dimensions qui furent étudiés : Distribution de la charge le long de la taille pour les remblais proches et l’accrochage de remblai de 5 m et la charge dans une nervure de 1 m de large modelée dans la position des unités de soutènement mécanisées. La modélisation a permis de déterminer la capacité de portée optimale du bouclier du dispositif nouveau pour la couche 2. Platinum production in Southern Africa amounted to 80% of world production in 2005with a small increase from 5 117 000 ounces to 5 275 000 ounces. For the seventh consecutive year the platinum market is on course to record a moderate deficit in supply. This is reflected in the price increase from a trading range US$860 to US$880 in June 2005 to an excess of US$1 200 in September 2006. Southern Africa, with its extensive platinum reserves, will continue to be the dominant platinum producer and has a number of new mines in an advanced stage of planning. The slogan ?Platinum Surges Ahead? was selected to describe the exciting and vibrantnature of all aspects of platinum mining, beneficiation and marketing. This conference will cover these aspects from exploration and orebody delineation, through mine design, development and operation to mine closure; mineral beneficiation, marketing and compliance with the Mining Charter will also be subjects for discussion and debate. It is also anticipated that the issue of overall increases in productivity, through the introduction of technology, will demonstrate Southern Africa?s status as a premier mining district. It is my pleasure to welcome delegates from abroad and locally, on behalf of the SAIMM, to the Second International Platinum Conference ?Platinum Surges Ahead?. I trust that you will find the proceedings informative and value adding and will participate in the discussions and debate in order to obtain maximum benefit from the conference. I am sure that the post-conference tours will be interesting and of great benefit to participants. Finally, a big word of thanks to the members of the Organising Committee, the management and staff of the SAIMM, and to our willing sponsors, without all of whom this conference would not have been possible.

This volume, which was advertised in the December, 1968, issue of the Journal at a pre-publication price of £4, is edited by W. Ryan of Warren Spring Laboratory and published by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, London. It is an up-to-date review of the operations of some 50 or so companies whose activities embrace the extraction and refinement of metals in the United Kingdom. Thirty-four metals are discussed, ranging from aluminium to zirconium and also there are chapters on ferro-alloys, non-ferrous alloys, high purity metals and metalloids, the platinum group metals and the rare earths. The sources of the various metals are given, followed generally by a brief description of the primary recovery process. Thereafter the operations of specific companies that deal in a particular metal are described in some detail. Certain metals such as barium, bismuth, gallium, thallium and zirconium are perforce covered very briefly as their commercial application is limited but in other cases, especially aluminium, copper lead and zinc, fairly detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided. This publication should be of considerable value to students as it presents modern procedures with regard to the refining and uses of the particular metals under review. This information may not be available from text books which in any case tend towards obsolescence. The book should also prove a valuable addition to the bookshelves of practising metallurgists providing, as it does, a schedule of most of the metallurgical companies operating in the United Kingdom. The quality of the paper and binding, the clarity of printing and illustrations and the arrangement of the subject matter are excellent and are subjects for which the editor and publishers are to be commended. "Southern Africa is generally thought to be well explored, with only limited potential for major new diamond discoveries. However, Chiadzwa in Zimbabwe and reports of a significant new kimberlite find in Angola are testimony to the dangers attached to an attitude that ‘there is nothing left to find’.Since the major discoveries in the central interior of South Africa in the 1870s, diamond exploration in the region has been led by market and political factors that influence the key exploration drivers of opportunity and value proposition. Unexpected new discoveries by new players always impact on existing producers and, from time to time, denial of opportunity through political or protectionist policies has inhibited investment in exploration.Entrepreneurial exploration appetite in southern Africa will be tempered by the potential value equation and security of investment. Overlaid on this, developments in diamond recovery technologies provide opportunity to reinvigorate current mines and old prospects previously considered too difficult or costly to exploit. Position on the cost curve will remain a key factor for survival in an increasingly competitive environment. IntroductionThe diamond industry in southern Africa boasts a history of 150 years of discovery and mining, forming the cornerstone of development of the core, modern economies at the southern tip of Africa.Since the discovery, in the 1860s and 1870s, of the secondary diamond placers and primary diamond-bearing kimberlite deposits in the central interior of the then Cape Colony and Orange Free State, southern Africa has endured as the pre-eminent diamondproducing region in the world. Notwithstanding periodic competition from significant new discoveries in other parts of the globe and the paucity of recent, new discoveries in the region, its ranking is unlikely to change in the short to medium term.In a geological context the region contains the Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe and Angola-Kasai cratons, identified in terms of Clifford’s rule as areas inherently prospective for diamonds, being underlain by portions of the Earth’s crust that are tectonically stable and older than 1.5 billion years (Clifford, 1992). Although the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) would, in a geographic context, be considered to be part of Central Africa, for the purposes of this review it is included in southern Africa since northeast Angola and the adjacent parts of the DRC form part of the same geological terrane and diamond production from both countries needs to be considered together. Historical and current diamond production from the northeastern parts of the DRC around Kisangani is not considered to be significant and its inclusion in the overall numbers for the DRC does not materially affect the overall picture presented here."

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution, the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallization and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. Furthermore, the autoclave circuit invariably is a high capital cost component of the plant and an area that is carefully scrutinized when debottlenecking and capacity increases are being considered. This paper identifies a unique proven way of increasing the capacity of existing or new exothermic pressure oxidative leach autoclave circuits by as much as two or three times.

The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. OosterveldIn opening the session, the Chairman indicated that the papers and discussions would revolve about quantitative methods of analysis and optimization of various aspects of exploration planning. The five papers would cover a wide range of topics within a general theme of exploration analysis, and it would be appropriate, therefore, to present the. papers as representing a sequential information-gathering process, namely, (i)geochemical and geophysical types of surveying for the location and identification of anomalous zones, (ii) tren¬ching and drilling of the anomalous zones found, and (iii) further refinement of the data for ore reserve calculations and production planning.The first paper, which was presented by Dr W. A. Hodgson, dealt with the optimum spacing between soil sample traverses conducted during geochemical prospecting. The theme of the paper was that the critical sampling interval should be based on the concept of element continuity, and that this interval could be determined by means of a correlogram. Ensuing discussion concerned the probability of the method, designed for areas where dispersion was high, working in localities where dispersion was either low or virtually non-existent. In the latter eases, specific orientation surveys for varying topographic, climatic and geological conditions would possibly be more useful than the preparation of correlograms. A further suggestion was made that cost versus risk should be taken into consideration when deciding upon the spacing between traverses. A balance could be struck by mathematical optimization. If the exploration budget was fixed, then the variance of risk could be minimized.The second paper was a short contribution by Mr C. J. Lenz. Computer-based plotting and evaluation of geochemical prospecting results were carried out because the low cost of analysis in Rhodesia permitted very large volumes of data to be accumulated in mass-coverage operations. Anomalous areas were demarcated within different environments by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. In the short discussion which took place it was debated whether the method should be used only in the early high-risk stages of geochemical exploration and whether the introduction of geological bias could influence the actual results of an exploration program."

"Rock has been cut in the process of mining since before the invention of explosives. Today, we seek to return to cutting to reap the benefits of continuous operations for South African underground hard-rock mines, to improve speed of access to the orebody, and to improve the efficiency of mining operations.Development of new technology fits within a framework of engineering knowledge. By understanding the characteristics of the rock, the tools we use to cut it with, and the history of mining and rock cutting, we can see the genesis of the road-header, the longwall, and the continuous miner, all drag bit cutters. They have emerged as the solutions of choice for underground mining of softer materials such as coal and potash. In hard rock, the challenges are the forces required to break the rock, and the wear of the tools caused by the rock’s abrasiveness. Only disc cutters currently handle the challenges, and even then, often not economically. New materials like thermally stable diamond composite will help, as will combinations of mechanical cutters and other methods such as high-pressure water or high temperatures.It is not clear what will emerge as the consensus technique for hardrock cutting. Experience teaches that development is expensive and the market is small. Will mining companies partner with equipment developers to make the technological leap? Or will the solution come from a systems approach, not considered here?IntroductionBlasting is the dominant method of breaking rock for the purposes of mining. When used underground, blasting is part of a batch process. If rock can be cut rather than blasted, mining can become continuous, leading to process and efficiency improvements.Coal produced from underground mines is now predominantly excavated using mechanical means, but underground hard rock is still broken primarily by explosives.This paper traces the history of rock cutting, reviews the main physical processes that are or could be used, and comments on the future. It is written from the perspective of narrow-stope hard-rock mining typical of South African gold and platinum mines."

"There are numerous factors that affect open stope stability and often result in falls of ground. These falls of ground can be attributed to factors such as beam failure due to a larger than normal roof area (hydraulic radius too large), adverse ground conditions, seismicity, the stress-strain environment, absence of support, and poor drill-and-blast practices. The effect of time on the stability of open stopes is sometimes underestimated and is relatively unknown, especially on Target Mine. Actual data was collected from open stopes at Target and analysed to show the effect of time on open stope stability. The benefits of this analysis will include improved understanding of time-dependent failure, which can assist in reducing dilution and the risk of sterilization of future mining blocks. IntroductionTarget Mine is situated adjacent to the town of Allanridge, some 20 km from Welkom in South Africa’s Free State Province, and is the most northerly mine in the Welkom Goldfields area (Figure 1). The mine consists of a single surface shaft system with a sub-shaft (Target 1C shaft) and a decline. Ownership was attained by Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited in May 2004 (Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, 2010). Before discussing the selection of open stopes for the back-analyses, a brief explanation of open stoping as practiced at Target Mine will be given. The orebody is some 180 m in thickness and 270 m wide and comprises multiple reefs overlying one another. The 180 m thick reef package is termed the Eldorado Reefs, as shown in Figure 2. The Eldorado Reefs suboutcrop against the Dreyerskuil Reefs, as shown in Figure 3. The dip of the reef varies from as low as 10° in the west to 75° in the east.Compared with most Australian and Canadian open stoping mining operations, Target Mine is unique. In most Australian and Canadian mining operations the hangingwall and footwall of the open stopes comprise waste rock, and the orebody dips relatively steeply. Due to the depth of Target Mine, some 2300 m to 2500 m below surface, a destress slot (Figure 4) is mined to create an artificial, shallow mining environment whereby the field stress is managed and kept at values of around 60 MPa. The destress slot comprises a narrow tabular stope with an average width of 1.5 m, and is mined on the Dreyerskuil Reefs.At Target Mine the hangingwall, sidewalls, and footwall of the open stopes all comprise reef of different grades, except for the EA1, where the EB footwall is waste rock. If a stope, for example, is mined alongside an existing old stope, the western sidewall of this stope will consist of backfill. The general mining direction of open stopes is from the lowest position of the reef on the west, progressing up towards the east as shown in Figure 5."

Iron ore pellet feed pressing has been one of the first and most successful applications of High- Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) in the minerals industry. Vale S.A. has been one of the pioneers in this application, currently with six HPGRs in operation in the pelletising plants of the Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil). In spite of the important advances in the technology, risks still exist when scaling-up the process from small-scale information. The present work takes advantage of the recent advances in the mathematical modelling of the HPGR performance, using the population balance model to evaluate the modified Torres and Casali model prediction in iron ore pellet feed pressing for different scales of operation. Results are presented that compare the HPGR performance in different operational scales for iron ore pellet feed pressing, demonstrating the confidence of this model-based approach for scale-up to full-scale HPGRs used in pressing iron ore concentrates. The development of newer and improved electrical products has led to an increase in the rate at which older products are discarded as waste. The main focus of electronic waste is the printed circuit board (PCB) because of the inherently high value of contained metals such as gold and copper. Several options for treatment of the non-metallic fraction including material recycling, where the residue may be used as inclusions in concrete or asphalt materials with minimal processing or chemical recycling, where chemicals and fuels are produced from the residue using pyrolysis exist. In this paper, the utilisation of the non-metallic leached PCB waste fraction as reductant in secondary copper smelting was investigated. Analysis of the leached residue revealed that PCB is highly amorphous and has a carbon content of 28.5%, an oxygen content of 23.1%, with the ash and volatile matter contents 40.1% and 44.8% respectively. Thermodynamic simulations of secondary smelting of copper were conducted in terms of metal recovery, and the energy required when PCB was used as a reductant. The results were also compared with that of coal and PCB-coal blends. The simulations revealed that as PCB in the blend used as reductants increases, the amount of energy required for the smelting operation decreases. Metal recovery slightly decreased as the mass percent of PCB in the blend increased due to lower carbon content present in PCB relative to coal. The results also highlighted the energy saving with PCB-coal blends which was around 160 kWh per ton of feed relative to coal. The decrease in the amount of energy required for the operation is attributed to the higher volatile content of the PCB, which is also a part of the reduction process. In metal mines, comminution is commonly used to liberate minerals for subsequent mineral concentration processes, such as flotation, magnetic separation and gravity separation. However, ores are aggregates of valuable minerals and their disseminated gangue minerals, and these minerals exhibit diverse comminution behaviours. In carbonate-bearing iron ores, hematite, siderite, and quartz are the predominant minerals, of which hematite is the objective recoverable mineral. In this regard, the present study aimed to identify the imperfections in siderite minerals by X-ray computed tomography (XCT), and thus quantitatively characterise their size and shape in terms of Feret diameter and aspect ratio, as well as other parameters. XCT images indicated the protogenetic ubiquity of pores <5 μm in diameter and cracks of 7-8 μm inside siderite particles. In the ground product of artificially mixed siderite and hematite, siderite particles were smaller than hematite particles. Siderite particles had a larger surface area and greater surface roughness than hematite particles of the same volume, which was attributable to the intrinsic holes and cracks in siderite particles. This study provides an insight into the relationship between the inherent imperfections of minerals and their comminution properties. "In selecting a suitable method to sink a vertical shaft for underground access, a number of constraints influence the ultimate decision of where and how to develop the shaft, not least among these being safety, development and construction time, and cost. Two additional considerations stand out: these being geotechnical conditions and technology, the latter taking into account existing underground access. Assuming a project for which an existing underground excavation is available, it is tempting to build a shaft sinking project from the outset based on the raiseboring method, which has the potential to be the safest, fastest, and least expensive method provided that geotechnical conditions permit.And therein lies the rub: regardless of project time or cost constraints, when it comes to raiseboring a long (say, greater than 500 m), large diameter (greater than 4.5 m) shaft, the rock mass conditions ultimately dictate what method of shaft sinking will be feasible. Over the course of several studies for a particular project, several geotechnical analyses were carried out specifically for the purpose of developing a shaft by raiseboring. Risk analysis and experience showed that where the rock mass conditions indicated an unacceptably high risk potential, an alternative method needed to be considered, even if this meant increasing both the time and financial requirements.In this paper we present an overview of geotechnical investigation practices for shaft sinking. Decisionmaking thresholds for raiseboring or other methods of shaft sinking are discussed, including probabilities of failure, empirical rock mass classification, basic wedge failure, and back-analysis of a failed case. The design of appropriate support, and analysis of relative safety benefits for various shaft sinking methods, falls outside the scope of this work, and will be presented in a separate paper.IntroductionThe potential for rock mass failure during shaft development and construction affects whether a project is completed safely, on time and on budget.
