An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African platinum group metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky Reef is low in chromium and does not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8?10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process, care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation of Fe2NiO4 (trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever-increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3.A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. The issues that need addressing are generally well known and include: ?South Africa was ranked 45th out of 46 i.r.o. productivity ?SMMEs contribute 1% to exports compared to 40-60% for the ?tigers? ?High unemployment ?Limited skills of the majority of workers ?Slow growth rate of the economy ?The vast majority of suppliers are not world-class ?The vast majority of suppliers are not export or marketing orientated. In order to survive, all parties, i.e. government, labour and business, will have to play their part.

A well known rock mass classification system has been altered slightly to address the issues found under remnant mining conditions. By detail study of the expected fracture patterns and local geology, the rock mass is classified to indicate the condition of the hanging wall prior to mining. The risk level of each mining step is evaluated by calculating input parameters for computer simulations from the actual rock mass condition. Seismic activity is catered for by the understanding that large event rates and large magnitude events reduce the quality of the local rock mass and that the rock mass stiffness should be adapted accordingly. A case study is presented to test parts of the protocol. Un système connu de classification des masses rocheuses a été légèrement modifié pour faire face aux questions posées par les conditions d’extraction de débris. Une étude détaillée des diagrammes de fragmentation et de la géologie locale permet de classer la masse rocheuse pour indiquer la condition du toit avant l’extraction. Le niveau de risque de chaque étape minière est évalué en calculant les paramètres d’entrée pour simulation par ordinateur à partir de la condition réelle de la masse rocheuse. L’activité sismique est prise en compte avec la réalisation que les taux de larges évènements et les évènements de large magnitude réduisent la qualité de la masse rocheuse locale et que la raideur de la masse rocheuse doit donc être adaptée. Une étude de cas est présentée pour tester des sections du protocole. Ein sehr bekanntes Gesteinsmassenklassifikationssystem wurde abgeändert um die Probleme zu behandeln die unter Restabbaukonditionen angetroffen werden. Durch detaillierstes Studium der der zu erwartenden Bruchmuster und der lokalen geologischen Verhältnisse wird die Gesteinsmasse in Hinblick auf die Konditionen der Flözoberseite klassifiziert. Das Risikoniveau für jeden Abbauschritt wird durch die Eingabeparameter aktuellen Gesteinsmassenkondition für die Computersimulation evaluiert. Für die Seismische Aktivitäten wird Sorge getragen durch das Verständnis, daß große Ereignisraten und Ereignisse hoher Größenklassen die Qualität der lokalen Gesteinsmasse reduzieren und daß die Gesteinsmassensteifheit entsprechend adaptiert werden sollte. Eine Fallstudie um Teile des Protokolls zu testen wird präsentiert.

Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

A two-year study focused on current noise exposure levels in the South African mining industry, aimed at helping the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa meet its milestones for eliminating noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods A multi-task methodology was adapted from international baseline studies to determine the exposure to noise in both large-scale and small- to medium-scale mines. Results On average, 66.7 per cent of the employees sampled in year 1 and 78.4 per cent in year 2 were exposed to noise levels of above the 85 dB A legislated occupational exposure level. Conclusions Information obtained through the study could be developed into a national personal noise exposure database, including audiometric results, equipment noise emission levels and initiatives for noise engineering control by mines and equipment manufacturers to facilitate targets of eliminating NIHL. The introduction of the Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) and the updated Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF) has caused many South African university departments to rethink their programme qualification mixes (PQMs). In addition to the requirements stated in the HEQSF, a number of other factors have to be taken into consideration by a university department. These factors include, for example, the standards generated by the Engineering Standards Generating Body (ESGB) and subsequently approved by the Engineering Council of SA (ECSA) and the need to prepare students for various categories of professional registration with ECSA. This means that a university department has to choose the correct mix of Learning Programmes (LPs) from the HEQSF menu (which consists of 13 types of LPs). Preparing students for ECSA registration is aligned with the mission of universities, which is to teach and undertake research. However, research and the LPs associated with research go beyond the requirements for current ECSA registration. Assuming that universities offering engineering LPs would elect to prepare students for both ECSA registration and teach them to produce research outputs, which is mostly done at Master and Doctorate levels (NQF Levels 9 and 10), then it follows that academics are more interested in NQF Level 5 to 10 pathways (abbreviated as ?L5-10?) rather than the shorter pathways required towards professional registration. (For example, ECSA requires an NQF L5-L7 pathway for registration as a candidate professional technologist. This specific pathway may consist, for example, of two LPs, namely the 360-credit Diploma and the Advanced Diploma.) A L5-L10 pathway is a combination of LPs that will prepare the learner with a NSC (or equivalent qualification at level 4) to Doctoral level (level 10). Universities may choose at least four major pathways from the HEQSF menu in order to educate and develop students from NQF Level 5 to 10. However, various pathways towards registration in the category of candidate with ECSA are also embedded into these four NQF L5-L10 pathways, where each consist of a unique combination of LPs. Each of these pathways has an opportunity cost, and economic reality means that smaller departments may have to choose between the four pathways. Of all the many factors involved in PQM decision-making, the focus of this paper is on the HEQSF requirements, ECSA standards, and ECSA registration and how these, together with the various qualifications and educational LPs provided for by the HEQSF may impact on the PQM decision taken by engineering departments and schools at South African universities. The proposed four NQF L5-L10 ?pathway tool? for PQM decision-making may be useful for pointing out the advantages, disadvantages, and applications of the various pathways and combinations of pathways. Rather than deciding from a menu of thirteen qualifications and associated LPs, this article proposes that decision-making be undertaken on the basis of a menu of four main articulated ?NQF L5-L10? pathways (which also include one or more of the ECSA?s pathways for professional registration). The proposed ?NQF L5-L10 pathway? tool is an attempt to move one step closer to the aim of achieving a structured decision-making approach for designing a PQM at departmental level.

A pair of silicon rubber replicas of size 250 mm by 250 mm, from a natural rock joint, was used to produce several high strength concrete fracture replicas of different sizes, from 50 mm by 50 mm to 200 mm by 200 mm. The morphology of the concrete fracture replicas were digitized at the laboratory using a 3D-laser-scanning machine with high accuracy and resolution. The scale dependency of the geometrical properties, including surface roughness and aperture, of the samples were investigated using fractal method. The investigation was extended to study the scale effect on the mechanical properties of the concrete fracture replicas. Four concrete replicas having same geometry from each sampling size were sheared under four different normal loads. The results show that normal and shear stiffness and peak shear strength decrease with increasing sample size and decreasing normal stress. It is concluded that for accurate determination of geometrical and mechanical properties of rock joints in the laboratory and field scales, samples with size equal to or larger than stationarity limit are required. Die Morphologie der Beton Rissreplikas wurde mittels eines 3D-Laserscanners hoher Genauigkeit und Auflösung im Labor digitalisiert. Die Skalenabhängigkeit der geometrischen Eigenschaften, dies inklusive Oberflächenrauhigkeit und Öffnungsweite, wurden mittels Fraktalen bestimmt. Die Studie wurde durch die Untersuchung der mechanischen Eigenschaften der Betonrepliken erweitert. Hierbei wurden vier Betonrepliken der selben Geometrie jeder Probengrösse unter vier verschiedenen normalen Belastungen abgeschert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen das sowohl Normal- und Schersteifigkeit als auch die Spitzenscherfestigkeit mit zunehmender Probengrösse und abnehmender Normalspannung abnehmen. Es hat sich gezeigt, daß für eine genaue Bestimmung der geometrischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften von Felsklüften im Labor und im Feld Proben einer Größe gleich oder größer des stationären Limits verlangt werden. Deux répliques en gomme de silicone d’une fracture naturelle, de dimension 250 mm par 250 mm, ont été utilisées pour produire des répliques en béton de haute résistance de dimensions allant de 50 mm par 50 mm à 200 mm par 200 mm. La morphologie de ces répliques a été digitalisée au laboratoire à l’aide d’un laser-scanner 3D haute résolution et haute précision. L’influence de l’échelle des propriétés géométriques, incluant rugosité et ouverture, a été étudiée en utilisant la méthode des fractales. Des essais complémentaires ont été réalisés afin d’étudier l’effet d’échelle sur les propriétés mécaniques des répliques de fracture en béton. Quatre répliques béton de même géométrie pour les différentes tailles d’échantillons ont été cisaillées sous quatre valeurs de contrainte normale. Les résultats montrent que la rigidité normale et tangentielle ainsi que la résistance de pic diminuent en proportion de l’augmentation de la taille de l’échantillon et de la diminution des contraintes normales. On peut en conclure que, pour une détermination précise des propriétés géométriques et mécaniques des fractures au laboratoire et sur le terrain, des échantillons de taille égale ou supérieure à la limite stationnaire sont nécessaires.

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. In diesem kleinen Standort, werden wiederholte Wasserdruck Erhöhungen durch das Schliessen eines Hahnes produziert. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. Die numerische 2D-Modellierung mit dem UDEC Software ist für die Verkeilung der Faktoren gebraucht worden. In this paper, one of the human factors that affect productivity in an underground gold mine in Saudi Arabia was investigated and analysed for the purpose of improving productivity. The human factor that was investigated is labour utilization and labour productivity. In the selected mine, labourer?s performances were measured carefully. It was found that in this mine, workers spend only 65% of the shift time in a productive work, and they spend 35% of the shift time in non-productive activities. As a result, recommendations were presented to enhance productivity in the selected underground gold mine by enhancing labour utilization.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation and annually extracts 57 million tonnes of rock from 2 open pits. Over the past 3 years ~220 km of exploration drilling has been done, ~1000 km of rock face have been exposed for face mapping and over 7000 laboratory and field tests have been conducted. This has produced large amounts of geotechnical data to be utilised for feasibility studies, initial slope design and ongoing slope optimisation. It was necessary therefore to develop geotechnical databases to manage the vast amounts of data collected. SABLE and MineMapper 3D databases were created for logging and mapping respectively, with rock testing data incorporated into both. A pit inspections database was developed in MS Access and the existing groundwater and slope monitoring database was improved. The databases were linked to AutoCAD and Datamine to ensure that the latest geotechnical data is used for planning, draughting and modelling. The use of geotechnical databases ensures that no data is lost, standards are maintained and analysis can be easily performed. This increases the confidence of the analysis and allows the geotechnical engineers to optimise slope designs and blast designs on a regular basis. This reduces the risk of slope failure thus making the open pits more economical and safe.

The performance of microemulsified diesel and conventional diesel collectors in coal flotation was compared by flotation indicators, including combustible recovery, ash content of the clean coal, and the flotation index. An efficient separation with lower dosage was obtained using the microemulsified diesel collector. Under optimum separation conditions, the microemulsion consumption was 100 g/t less compared with diesel. The saving in diesel consumption using the microemulsion reached about 70%, disregarding the consumption of the surfactant and cosurfactant. Frothing tests showed that the frother dosage was decreased by using the microemulsion collector, because of the surfactant and cosurfactant added during preparation. The microemulsified diesel collector is superior to the conventional diesel collector in terms of diesel consumption and separation efficiency, but the selectivity requires further improvement. Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

SYNOPSIS An analysis was made of records of accidents involving Bantu mineworkers and which resulted in either minor injuries or hospitalizations to determine patterns in underground accidents from which to formulate priorities in accident prevention in gold mines. The results showed that: (i) specific labour categories, such as inexperienced men, are exposed to certain types of hazards the extent of which warrant the separate design of safety programmes to meet their specific needs; (ii) the systematic study of minor accidents provides a dependable source of. information of which safety departments could make greater use in their efforts to control and prevent mining accidents.

A portable, stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motion was used in this study to create a large database of peak particle velocities measured underground. A total number of 39 sites located in stopes mining Carbon Leader and Ventersdorp Contact Reefs were investigated. Peak particle velocities whith values up to 3 m/s were recorded at some sites. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response. The maximum site response was obtained for source radii of between 5 m and 30 m and events locating within 200 m of the site. The extreme values of peak particle velocities were obtained in cases were the face-area lay within the source radius. Un instrument portable unique spécifiquement conçu pour enregistrer les mouvements dynamiques des terrains, a été utilisé dans cette étude pour créer une base de données importante sur la vélocité maximum des particules, mesurée en souterrain. Un nombre total de 39 sites situés dans les excavations exploitant les récifs appelés ‘Carbon Leader et Ventersdorp Contact Reefs’, a été investigué. Une vélocité maximale avec des valeurs allant jusqu’ à 3 m/s a été enregistrée sur certains sites. Les données enregistrées sur le bord de l’excavation ont été comparées aux données enregistrées par les réseaux séismiques de la mine pour déterminer la réponse du site. La réponse maximum du site a été obtenue pour des sources de rayons entre 5 m et 30 m et des évènements situés dans les 200 m du site. Les valeurs extrêmes de vélocités maximales ont été obtenues pour les cas où la zone de face se trouve à l’intérieur du rayon de la source. Eine Gesamtanzahl von 39 Aufstellungsorten in den Schichtabbauorten vom Carbon Leader und Ventersdorp Contact Reef wurden untersucht. Partikelspitzengeschwindigkeiten mit Werten bis zu 3 m/s wurden an einigen Standorten aufgezeichnet Die an der Oberfläche des Grubenraumes aufgezeichneten Daten wurden mit jenen Daten verglichen, die vom seismischen Netzwerk der Grube notiert wurden, um die örtliche Reaktion des Standortes zu bestimmen. Die maximale Standortreaktion wurde für Ursprungsradien von zwischen 5 m und 30 m erhalten und Ereignissen die sich innerhalb von 200 m vom Standort befanden. Die extremen Werte der Partikelhöchstgeschwindigkeiten wurdenin jenen Fällen erreicht wo sich der Abbaubereich innerhalb des Ursprungsradiuses befand.

Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

ABSTRACT: Although individually both continuum and discontinuum numerical analyses provide useful means to analyze rock slope stability problems, complex failures typically involve mechanisms related to both existing discontinuities (i.e. discontinuum) and deformation and brittle fracture of intact rock (i.e. continuum). One such example is the 1991 Randa rockslide in the southwestern Swiss Alps, where failure involved several complex mechanisms, which require the consideration of progressive failure and rock mass strength degradation. This paper presents results from a series of hybrid finite-/discrete-element models directed towards the explicit modelling of brittle fracturing in natural rock slopes, enabling the modelling of progressive failure, from initiation, through to the development of catastrophic failure, transport and deposition. RÉSUMÉ: Si les modélisations numériques de type continu ou discontinu fournissent des outils utiles pour l’analyse de problèmes de stabilité de pentes rocheuses, elles montrent de sérieuses limitations lorsque des mécanismes de rupture complexes impliquent des processus liés autant aux discontinuités préexistantes qu’au développement progressif de nouvelles fractures. Ceci se retrouve typiquement dans l’exemple de l’éboulement de 1991 à Randa dans les Alpes suisses du sud-ouest, où la rupture a impliqué plusieurs mécanismes complexes nécessitant la prise en considération de la fracturation progressive ainsi que de la dégradation de la résistance des masses rocheuses. Cet article présente des résultats provisoires d'une série de modèles hybrides orientés vers la modélisation explicite de la fracturation de pentes naturelles, permettant la modélisation de fractures progressive de leur initiation jusqu’à leur développement, leur rupture catastrophique, leur transport et leur déposition. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Obwohl numerische Kontinuum- und Diskontinuum-Berechnungen einzeln nützliche Ergebnisse zur Stabilitätsanalyse von Felshängen liefern, sind komplexe Felsrutschungen typischerweise mit Mechanismen verbunden, die sowohl durch bestehende Trennflächen (s.a. Diskontinuum-Ansatz) als auch durch die Deformation und das Versagen intakter Felsbereiche (s.a. Kontinuum-Ansatz) bedingt werden. Ein Beispiel für einen solchen Sachverhalt ist der Bergsturz von Randa 1991 im südwestlichen Teil der Schweizer Alpen, bei dem die Rutschung mehrere komplexe Mechanismen umfasste, so dass “progressive failure” und Verminderung der Gebirgsfestigkeit in Betracht gezogen werden müssen. Dieser Artikel beschreibt vorläufige Ergebnisse einer Reihe von hybriden Modellrechnungen (Finite-/Diskrete-Elemente). Diese haben zum Ziel, explizit das bruchhafte Versagen natürlicher Felshänge zu modellieren, wobei das progressives Versagen im ganzen modelliert wird, von der Anfangsphase über die Entwicklung zum katastrophalen Versagen und den Transport und die Ablagerung der Rutschmassen.

We discuss the mechanical characteristics of underground structures that are subjected to vertical oscillations. Under such circumstances - expected when an earthquake rupture occurs very close to highly developed urban areas - the conventional seismic analysis, which mainly considers horizontal shear oscillations, may not be fully valid. Our analysis, based on the elastic wave theory, shows the effects of vertical disturbances and the generation mechanism of the unique damage patterns observed on the occasion of the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) Earthquake. Wir diskutieren über die mechanischen Eigenschaften der unterirdischen Strukturen, die sich vertikalen Schwingungen aussetzen. Unter solchen Umständen - erwartet, wann ein Erdbebenabbruch sehr nah an hochentwickelten städtischen Bereichen geschieht - kann die herkömmliche seismische Analyse, die sich hauptsächlich horizontale Schubbewegungen überlegt, möglicherweise nicht völlig gültig sein. Unsere Analyse, basiert auf der elastischen Wellentheorie, zeigt die Effekte der vertikalen Bewegungen und den Erzeugungsmechanismus der einzigartigen Beschädigungsmuster, die anläßlich des 1995 Kobe Erdbebens beobachtet wurden. A computer program was developed to simulate transient strains and stresses during an overcoring in the situ stress measurement. The solution is based on superpositioning of elastic stresses. The measured strains can be compared with the calculated ones to check if the measured transient behaviour is accordant with the interpreted in situ state of stress. If not, the in situ state of stress can be calculated based on any transient or final strain values. The transient stresses can be compared with the strength envelope of intact rock and thereby estimate the core damage potential. Technically, the developed code fulfilled all the objectives, and the numerical error was found to be less than 5%. The basic idea can be applied also for different overcoring probes with minor modifications and recalculation of stress tensors. The analysed case studies showed clearly the advance of having an objective and practical quality control method to study the reliability of the in situ stress measurement data. The study was set up and funded by the nuclear waste management companies Posiva Oy ( Finland ) and Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB ( Sweden ). Un programme informatique a été développé pour simuler des tensions et des contraintes passagères pendant la mesure in situ de contrainte de surcarottage. La solution se fonde sur une superposition de contraintes élastiques. Les contraintes mesurées peuvent être comparées avec celles calculées pour vérifier si le comportement passager mesuré correspond à l'état de contrainte in situ interprété. Sinon, l'état de contrainte in situ peut être calculé à partir de n'importe quelle valeur de contrainte passagère ou finale. Les contraintes passagères peuvent être comparées avec l'enveloppe de force de roche intacte et ainsi il est possible d'évaluer le potentiel de dégâts au noyau. Techniquement le code développé a rempli tous les objectifs, et le taux d'erreur s'est révélé être inférieur à 5 %. L'idée de base peut être appliquée aussi pour différentes expériences de surcarottage avec des modifications mineures et le recalcul de tenseurs de contrainte. Les études de cas analysées ont montré clairement l'avantage d'avoir une méthode de contrôle de qualité objective et pratique pour étudier la fiabilité de données de mesure de contrainte in situ. L'étude a été fondée et financée par les sociétés de gestion de déchets nucléaires Posiva Oy (Finlande) et Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (Suède). Es wurde ein Computerprogramm entwickelt, um Transient-Beanspruchungen und Spannungen während eines Überentkernens in situ-Spannung-Messung zu simulieren. Die Lösung beruht auf Superpositionierung von elastischen Spannungen. Die gemessenen Beanspruchungen können mit den berechneten Daten verglichen werden, um nachzuprüfen, ob das abgemessene Transient-Verhalten mit dem interpretierten in situ-Zustand der Spannung übereinstimmt. Wenn nicht, kann der situ-Zustand der Spannung auf irgendwelchen Transient- oder endgültigen Beanspruchungswerten berechnet werden. Die Transiet-Spannungen können mit dem Stärke-Umschlag des intakten Felsens verglichen werden und dadurch ein Kernbeschädigungspotential kalkulieren. Technisch erkannte der entwickelte Code alle Ziele und hat gefunden, dass die numerische Fehler weniger als 5 % waren. Grundsätzlich können auch verschiedene Überentkernen-Untersuchungen mit kleineren Modifizierungen und Wiederberechnung des Spannung-Tensors angewandt werden. Die analysierten Fallstudien zeigten deutlich den Fortschritt, objektive und praktische Qualitätskontrollmethode zu haben, die Zuverlässigkeit in Situ-Spannung-Messung-Daten zu studieren. Die Studie wurde aufgestellt und durch Atommüll-Management-Firmen Posiva Oy (Finnland) und Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (Schweden) finanziert.

Anglo Coal South Africa mines coal for both the domestic and export market using open cast and strip mining methods. To establish a mine, a process is set in place to gather ever increasing amounts of geological and metallurgical data to confirm a proven reserve. Increasingly, geotechnical data are also included in this process to confirm that reserve is easily and safely mineable. The mine design process is an iterative one using a combination of numerical modelling and empirical data to arrive at a mining layout that is both, practical, productive and safe. In South Africa it is a legal requirement to compile a code of practice to combat rock fall and slope instability accidents and these have to be revised annually, reinforcing the iterative process of continual improvement. To ensure best practise occurs, all Anglo Coal operations are subjected to annual 2nd party audits and ad hoc 3rd party audit by independent consultants. This paper attempts to explain the process described above in a concise, but understandable manner. 1.0 GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Ecca sediments date from the Permian period and the coal deposits were formed in glaciated valleys on a basement of Dolomite, Ryolite or Granophyre rock types. The sediments overlying the coal deposits are typically flat lying and multiple bedded. The sediments consist of mudstones, shales and sandstones and are generally capable of forming stable highwalls given the time that they must stand up for. Anglo Coal extracts coal from the Witbank, Highveld and Vereeniging coalfields. The Witbank coalfields contain five seams numbered from the base upwards, 1 to 5 Seam; Highveld coalfield the 2 and 4 Seam and the Vereening area the seams are described as Top, Middle and Bottom seams. Coal deposited over the basement Dolomite formation display very erratic dips, as contemporaneous subsidence occurred in some instances over sinkholes that were forming, resulting in local thickening of the coal deposit and resulting in strata that dips toward the centre of the sinkhole.
