The solubility characteristics of mono calcium aluminate (CaO A₁₂ 0 ) in water and in NaOH , Na₂ CO₂ , and NaOH - Na₂ CO₂ solutions were measured by determining the changes in Al2O3 concentrations in solution over a period of time at a specified temperature . The monocalcium aluminate was synthesized by sintering its starting components for 72 hours at 1,375 ° C. Distilled water and aqueous solutions of technical grades of NaOH and Na₂ CO₂ were used as solvents . The extraction of alumina from the monocalcium aluminate was dependent on the composition of the solvent and partially dependent on temperature for leaching . About 98 percent extraction of alumina from the aluminate occurred in Na₂ CO3 solutions containing 10 to 12 percent NaOH . Other solution compositions produce lesser extractions .

This Bureau of Mines publication presents guidelines for mining near surface and underground bodies of water. The guidelines were based on information developed under contract in three phases of study, as follows: (1) Collection and documentation of data from worldwide sources; (2) application of existing guidelines, foreign, Federal, and State, to case histories of previous inundations; and (3) development of recommended guidelines for underground coal mining near bodies of water aimed at maximum efficient utilization of underground coal resources consistent with minimizing inundation hazards. While the contract guidelines were for the mining of coal seams, they may also be used for mining any tabular sedimentary mineral deposit. Tables are given for the determination of the size of coal pillars needed; for other bedded deposits, similar tables could be determined based on their strength properties.

"This paper is based on the results of work conducted of the bureau's experiment station at Berkeley, Calif., in connection with the investigation of properties and methods of utilizing Western magnesite. The experiments described herein were made under the supervision of the writer, by W. C. Riddell and E. H. Delius, of the station's staff.In calcining magnesite for the production of magnesium oxide to be used in the preparation of oxychloride cement, the calcium carbonate present in the original rock may remain unchanged or appear in the finished product, either as CaO, or in combination with SiO2, A12O3, etc. As there is reason to believe that free CaO may have an effect on the behavior of caustic magnesia in the cement reaction, it is desirable to have a method for the determination of the relatively small amounts of free CO in the presence of a large quantity of MgO.The extraction of the free CaO with water free from CO2 at once suggests itself as a possible method. The solubilities of Ca(OH2)2 and Mg(OH)2. are given by Seidell in his book an ""Solubility of Inorganic and Organic Compounds."" (2nd Edition, 1919) as follows:"

Since my whole life has been spent in the mining business , I naturally tend to address my remarks particularly to the newly- graduated mining and metallurgical engineers among you . To a certain extent , all forms of engineering principles are involved in the training of the mining engineer , and most sorts of engineering are certainly utilized by him , so that every one of this graduating class is concerned with the field I propose to discuss . The fact that , beginning with to - day , you will always be styled engineers , indicates that you have passed successfully through preparatory school , and have survived the hard grind of the technical college . One object of your training here has been to instruct you in accurate , close , and clear thinking . Your minds have been taught to act directly , calmly . and always to the point . By now , you should know how to get facts , look far , and think through . You are supposed to be willing to recognize and adopt sound engineering principles and practices , in so far as they are known to you , and to furnish character , ability , and devotion to your calling . Some of you may have had a general college course before coming here to specialize in engineering . Where that has been possible , I hope it is the case , since a liberal educational course tends to make the alumnus more flexible and adaptable than the purely scientific graduate. The broader education enables one to change , with less serious loss , from one job to another; ready adaptability is a great asset ; the engineer should be capable of much more than a single special task . The necessary preliminary training for a professional occupation is intellectual in character , involving knowledge , and to some extent learning , as distinguished from mere skill . The well -balanced engineer is expected to embody a happy combination of theory and fact , of pure science and material reality ; experience shows that he is apt to give a good account of himself , once he gets the chance . For the long pull , the importance of unquestioned integrity can not be overemphasized . Leaders of big business sometimes have need for a man as agile and unscrupulous as a cat on a back fence ; on occasion , they may have to employ brilliant , smart , spectacular , and crafty people , but when the special purposes for which such men are hired have been accomplished , they are no longer wanted . Given natural health , intelligence , ability , and adequate training , probably the characteristics most admired in the young employee are steadiness , dependability , and loyalty . The last is the best . If you can not be simple , direct , and faithful in your dealings with your administrative superiors , no one will want you for long . I believe these points are of primary importance to the young engineer . Your groundwork must be right before you can get far . These personal characteristics are what eventually determine your relations with men and affairs . They are vital in the human engineering which may be a large part of your work .

The purpose of this study is to provide data that demonstrates that the Alcoa flash calciner design can be used for the decomposition of AlCl3?6H2O to A1203. Heat and material valance data for calcination provides data on the partial pressure of HCl in the off-gases. Experimentally determined data for the HCl partial pressure, over solutions expected in producing alumina from clay by the hydrochloric acid process, show that HCl can be absorbed from the off-gases into process solutions to effect crystallization of AlCl3?6H2O.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1943 as part of the Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3736 under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Previous to June 30, 1943." This list included 180 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to December 31, 1945, placed 10 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permis- sible list as a result of tests and changes in brand names.. Twelve permis- sible explosives were transferred from the active. to the inactive list. The present list contains 178 brand names. This report describes results of laboratory-scale experimental treatment of nine ores containing gold and silver, including samples of products of previous plant treatment, from ore deposits in California and Nevada. The samples treated were taken by engineers of the Bureau of Mines during investigations of these ore deposits. The information reported is of interest for development of the mining districts represented or in future Investigations of similar ores from other sources. The treatment methods were as simple as possible. More complicated treatments were tried when required, The applicability of the methods and their limitations in treating the ores are shown by the data in this report. The following treatment methods were employed in the experiments described: Screen analyses were made to determine distribution of values in various screened-sized portions of crushed ore, or to determine optimum size to which a particular ore should be crushed or ground to liberate values, and some-times to determine residual values in various-sized portions of treated material.

Laboratory experiments were conducted on several materials to determine their suitability for the production of mineral wool. By blending raw charges in the proper proportions and in some instances by adding lime, acceptable wools were made from samples originating in Alaska, Florida, Texas, and Virginia. It was shown that satisfactory wools can be produced from many kinds of raw materials if the ratios of acidic and basic constituents are properly maintained. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has facilities at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla, Mo., for examining and testing mineral-wool raw materials. Samples are evaluated through small-scale wool-blowing experiments, aided by petrographic, chemical, and physical analyses of the raw materials and finished wools. When enough experimental data have been accumulated they are made public through Government reports and periodicals. This report of investigations follows that published in 19513/ and presents test data on samples received and examined since 1951.

Difficulty has been encountered in making thermodynamic calculations of metallurgical reactions involving interoxidic compounds of the ferroalloy elements because of the serious lack of most thermodynamic data for these substances. This Bureau of Mines report (the first of a planned series dealing with entropies of vanadates, tungstates, and molybdates) presents low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropy values at 298.15° K. for three crystalline sodium vanadates--metavanadate (NaV03), orthovanadate (Na3VO4), and pyro-vanadate (Na4V2O7). The results are combined with data for the constituent oxides and elements to obtain entropies of formation of the vanadates. Previous to this report only one vanadate had been studied Similarly, ammonium metavanadate.4/

Some serious fires have occurred in bituminous-coal mines because of short circuits on direct-current power systems that do not have adequate circuit-breaker protection. The writer's observation of circuit-breaker installations in numerous coal mines leads to the conclusion that many persons am not properly informed as to the true functions, limitations, and operation of circuit breakers. Faulty protection results in fire hazards that endanger lives and property. Proper circuit-breaker protection would greatly minimize or, in many instances, eliminate the hazards; moreover, many operating advantages of proper application of modern circuit breakers would be gained. The purpose of this circular is to show why fire hazards exist in many mines despite the use of circuit breakers and how, the hazards may be overcome. A method is given for determining whether additional circuit-breaker, protection is required for a specific 250/275-volt direct-current distribution system, and, if so, the approximate locations and capacities of the required supplemental breakers.

By injecting natural gas through auxiliary tuyeres into the smelting zone of the Bureau of Mines ' experimental blast furnace in January 1959 , the investigators succeeded in reducing the coke consumption by approximately one - third that of the base period . This caused a 30 - percent increase in pig iron production with no increase in wind rate . The maximum gas addition in these experiments was 4,665 cubic feet per ton of metal produced . Sharp reduction in gas consumption occurred when high hot blast and high wind rates were used , although the gas injection rate in percent of air blown remained constant . As the heat energy produced by burning natural gas to carbon monoxide and hydrogen is much less than burning coke to carbon monoxide , greater blast temperatures were required during the test runs . The gases produced from the methane were , however , more effective reductants ; so it was possible to increase the production rate while reducing the total heat requirements per ton of metal produced . During a base period with an all - sinter burden , before introduction of natural gas , a coke rate of 1,484 pounds per net ton of pig iron was attained , using an average blast temperature of 1,518 ° F. Gas was introduced gradually over a two -week period until an average 7 percent of the air blown was reached . During this period , the wind rate was adjusted downward to maintain a constant flow of gas in the bosh . The production rate of the furnace remained relatively constant . The quality of pig iron, however , improved as the sulfur load on the furnace was reduced as a result of the substitution of gas for coke . Blast temperatures were increased during this period from 1,518 ° F. to 1,939 ° F. , when the maximum gas addition was reached .

The current use of Mid - Continent crude oil for the manufacture of war products , such as aviation gasoline and lubricating cil , has caused an acute shortage of available supply from established sources . Therefore , refiners who heretofore have had no reason to use West Texas crude oils now are considering them as charging stock and need more information concerning their characteristics . The Bureau of Mines has published several reports3/ giving analyses of the most important of these crude oils . However, to make the applicable data in these publications readily available to refiners , the present compilation of analyses of West Texas crude oils has been prepared . Data showing the effect of catalytic desulfurization of naphthas from West Texas crude oils have been presented in a restricted Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations . These analyses were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell , chief, Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines , Washington, D. C. , and N. A. C. Smith, supervising engineer , Fetroleum Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines , Bartlesville, Okla . , and under the direct supervision of Harold M. Smith, senior petroleum chemist, Bartlesville , Okla .

The data contained in this report were obtained incidental to the Bureau of Mine's investigation of the lime-soda sinter process as applied to the recovery of alumina from siliceous bauxite, kaolin, and other high aluminous materials. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of aluminum from domestic low-grade ores. The Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md., conducted laboratory and pilot-plant investigations of the recover-y of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Reports by the College Park staff covering the recovery of alumina from these sources have been published. The lime-soda sinter process involves the sintering of the finely ground siliceous bauxite or clay with limestone and soda ash in a rotary kiln. During the sintering the alumina supposedly reacts with the soda ash to form soluble sodium aluminate and the silica combines with the lime to form the insoluble orthosilicate. In the early stages of the investigation it was considered desirable to know the temperatures at which the phase changes occurred during the sintering operation. The total time involved in the passage of any given portion of the charge through the kiln was 28 minutes. The exposure time of the charge to temperatures above 600° C. (decomposition temperature of kaolinite) was, roughly, half the total. The exposure to the full temperature of the kiln, 1,100° C was only 3 minutes. (Subsequently, the maximum kiln temperature and retention time were increased.)

Size distributions and concentrations of particulates emitted from diesel engine exhausts were measured with cascade impactors. Samples were taken from the exhaust of two types of engines using three types of fuel and operating under five different engine speed and load conditions. The measured mass median diameters of the diesel particulates were typically about 0.3 um. There was no significant difference in mass median diameter between engines or fuels and only a slight dependence on operating mode. Concentration measurements ranged from 14.2 to 250.9 mg/cu m, and calculated mass outputs, from 52 to 3,443 mg/min. Significant differences in mass output were found between engines, fuels, and especially between different operating modes. The quantity of clean dilution air that would be required to reduce the particulate mass concentration below the 2.0 mg/cu m respirable dust standard for coal mines was greater than the dilution air required to meet the standards for noxious gases for both engines tested.

The power required to circulate a gas-solids suspension was determined using a centrifugal compressor and a closed system. The suspension consisted of 18- to 40-micron glass beads in a mixture of 89 percent N2 and 11 percent CO2 at 20 psig. Solids-to-gas (S/G) ratios w re O to 2.2 lb/lb; gas flow rates were l.2 to 2.5 lb/min. Power requirement was found to follow the relationship hp t = hp(. + l), where hp t = the total power, and hpg = the power required for pure gas.

The Capital Mine is one of, the more important zinc mines in Lawrence County, Mo. Owing to the urgent need for additional zinc during the war and the available facilities for the treatment of zinc-lead ores at the property, the Bureau of Mines examined the mine during July and August 1942 and selected it for further investigation by churn drilling, which was accomplished in the fall of 1943 and spring of 1944. At the conclusion of the drilling on the Capital holdings, the Greenland property, immediately south, was investigated by drilling two additional holes. Results of the investigation are presented in this report.

This report describes reconnaissance by the Federal Bureau of Mines of titanium-bearing sandstone in Kemper County, Miss. The purpose was to determine the ilmenite, rutile, and associated heavy-mineral content of black-sand-bearing Eocene deltaic formations" The investigation was part of a survey of titanium resources of the United States. Ilmenite (FeTi03), an iron-titanium oxide, is the major titanium-bearing mineral consumed in the titanium pigment industry. Rutile (Ti02), titanium oxide, is used mainly in producing welding-rod coatings and titanium metal. The fieldwork was conducted during the first half of November 1959. Seven holes, totaling 304 feet of bore, from which 64 samples of cuttings were taken, were drilled in the north-central part of the county; and two holes, totaling 172 feet of bore, from which 34 samples of cuttings were taken, were drilled in the southeastern part.

The Bureau of Mines has under development on a technical scale an electrolytic process for treating oxidized ores of zinc , using caustic soda as an electrolyte . Whereas the Bureau process can alternately make either solid zinc or zinc dust , the following paper , from the Ludwigshafen research laboratory of the well -known I. G. Farbenindustrie , A. G. , of Germany, deals only with production of zinc dust from sodium zincate solutions and may well serve as introduction to the subject for American metallurgists . The Bureau of Mines pioneered in the idea ; a study on laboratory scale by H. J. Morgan and 0. C. Ralston was made early in the First World War, and published in Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society . The Eckardt paper , translation of which follows , goes more thoroughly into the preparation of electrolytic zinc dust , and later publications of the Bureau of Mines will deal with broader details and application of the idea to treatment of lowgrade ores and metallurgical intermediates , which is the point where Eckardt left off . 4 The Eckardt report became available through operations of Field Information Agency , Technical ( FIAT ) of the Office of Military Government for Germany (US ) , which made bibliofilm copies of the files of internal technical reports of many of the German industrial establishments , Eckardt's report is dated April 1939 and was taken on FIAT Microfilm Reel MM 106 , frames 82-101 , which is on file as Publication Board Document 41411 in Office of Technical Services of the U. S. Department of Commerce , Washington , D, C , Eckardt points out that the normal source of zinc dust is the blue powder of the zinc retorts , which decreases in volume every year owing to technologic improvements in zinc smelting. Tests were made in reactors ranging from 12 to 30 inches in diameter to develop methods for the preparation of sodium chloride - titanium lower chlorides ( dichloride and trichloride ) melts that contain titanium predominantly in the divalent state . Such melts are desirable as a starting material for the production of titanium metal or as an electrolyte for electrorefining of titanium . Sodium reduction of TiCl with an 18 - hour period of holding the reaction products in the molten state produced melts that contained titanium lower chlorides in TiCl₂ - to - TiCl , molar ratio of approximately 8 to 1. Sodium reduction of TiCl in a reactor with a shielded pipe weir , that required no melt -holding period , produced melts with a TiCl₂ - toTiCl , molar ratio as low as 4 to 1 . Reduction of TiCl4 with scrap titanium metal in molten sodium chloride produced relatively pure melts containing about 27 percent titanium in a Ticl₂ - to - Ticl , molar ratio of approximately 4 to 1 .

In 1984 the Bureau of Mines cunducted mineral investigations of specific sites within the Yentna Mining District. One hundred eight placer and rock samples were taken. Reconnaissance placer samples were collected from drainages in the Talkeetna, Susitna, and Yentna River basins. The highest placer gold values were found in the historic placer gold producing creeks of the Cache-Peters Creek area. Samples taken from an outcrop in the Middle Fork of Iron Creek in the Talkeetna Mountains contained previously unreported high lead, zinc, and silver values.
