Conventional methods for determining the size of dust suspended in a gas require that agglomerates (clusters of particles) first be broken into particles, but in evaluating industrial dust-removing equipment the size of the agglomerates as they actually exist in the gas stream is far more important. This paper presents results of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines to develop methods for determining the size of dust agglomerates suspended in a gas stream. The studies are part of the Bureau's continuing research on synthetic liquid fuels. The size and size-distribution of agglomerates as they exist when the gas reaches the filter was determined by using a membrane filter in conjunction with a dust count under a microscope. A membrane filter is a cellulosic sheet about 150 microns thick containing millions of holes per square centimeter--holes of uniform diameter that run directly through the sheet without interconnection.

[THE LITERATURE contains relatively few thermodynamic values for interoxidic compounds, and these often are unreliable. This is especially true of data for ferrites and aluminates for which heat of formation determinations may involve extreme experimental difficulties. This report contains the results of new experimental work for obtaining the heats of formation of five ferrites (Ca2Fe2O5, CaFe2O4, MgFe2O4,, NaFeO2, and LiFeO2) and one aluminate (CaAl4O7), and a review and revision of previous similar work of this laboratory on five aluminates (Ca3A12O6,, 12/7 CaO-Al2O3, CaAl2O4, NaA1O2, and LiAlO2), The results for the 11 compounds are combined with entropy and high-temperature heat content data to derive tables of heats and free energies of formation (both from the oxides and from the elements) for the temperature range 298° 1,800° K, The relative stabilities of the compounds are discussed. The presented data all have application to ceramic reactions, and those for the calcium and sodium aluminates are applicable in considering soda-lime sintering processes for extracting alumina from silicate minerals such as day and labradorite.]

[Adequate supplies of suitable coal and coke are prime requisites in many industries, particularly those dealing with the utilization of mineral resources, recently interest has been focused on the possibilities of using electricity produced at Bonneville and Grand Coulee, Wash., in many electrochemical and electrometallurgical processes, in which core or some form of carbon is necessary in addition, discussion has been revived on the possibility of making iron and steel by the conventional methods employed in blast and open-hearth furnaces. The subject also is important at this time because of its relationship to industrial preparedness for national defense. A supply of coke from local sources on the Pacific coast is necessary in any program of production for strategic sufficiency of certain materials. An anal trio involving tae establishment of such industries should include detailed data on available supplies of coal, the quality and properties of the coke produced, and the technologic and economic factors involved in manufacture of echo and disposal of byproducts.]

Stress-relief techniques and instrumentation have been developed through many years of research in the Federal Bureau of Mines and successfully used to determine the in situ state of stress in rock. This paper describes the drilling equipment and accessories for use with the Federal Bureau of Mines three-component deformation borehole gage. Operation and calibration procedures for the deformation gage are discussed in detail. Site selection and overcoring procedures are included to provide a complete working knowledge for surface or underground applications.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a program of research to evaluate and improve remote mine seal construction technology for mine fire control and suppression. The main focus of this work is to develop reliable technology that will remotely seal a mine opening from floor-to-roof and rib-to-rib. NIOSH, in partnership with Strata Mine Services Inc.1, is evaluating the capability of a two-component phenolic foam-based product, called Rocsil®1, that is intended for cavity filling, air and gas sealing, and consolidation of highly fractured strata. Rocsil® can be rapidly applied, has a quick cure time, a high expansion rate, good compressive resistance and excellent anti-static properties. When the resin and catalyst are mixed, an immediate foaming reaction occurs followed by rapid expansion up to 30 times the original volume. By virtue of its fire-resistance properties, Rocsil® foam has application for sealing underground mine areas undergoing heating from spontaneous combustion and it could be useful for remote mine seal construction to aid in mine fire control and suppression. This paper presents an overview of remote mine sealing technology, introduces the use of Rocsil® foam for remote mine seal installations, offers a case study of the use of this rigid foam material to remotely construct a temporary in-mine seal and discusses technology improvements. "INTRODUCTION The Buck. Creek corundum area of Clay County, North Carolina, includes one of the largest single masses of peridotite outcrops in the whole Appalachian Range and has been described by Pratt, an early authority on corundum, as offering one of the best potentialities for corundum production in North Carolina.Two principal types of corundum deposits are found at Buck Creek the vein type and the corundum-bearing amphibolite dikes.The vein deposits occur in structural fissures that strike north to northeast in a gangue of feldspar, zoisite, an, chlorite. The corundum is generally coarse-grained and good-quality. The corundum content varies from several percent to 50 percent.The corundum in the amphibolites is more or less disseminated through the dike, is generally lower-grade, and is less in quantity, than the vein corundum. About 50 percent of the amphibolite corundum is coarse enough for snagging-wheel grade but is difficult to separate from the amphibolite.Production from the Buck Creek area has been small and came mainly from high-grade pocket in the vein deposits. Pratt 3/ reports 300 tons of corundum ore was produced to about 1896. No record of subsequent production is available.The critical shortage of corundum during the war, due to transportation difficulties and the depletion of deposits abroad, prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate domestic reserves.After a favorable report was obtained on the Buck Creek area, the Bureau began exploration of the deposit in September 1943 and continued until February 1945."

The Bureau of Mines is responsible for a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse and changing mineral resource needs of the Nation. These programs are managed by the Director and two Deputy Directors, who formulate general policy and program direction from the Washington, D.C., headquarters. Bureau program activities are classified into two major functions, minerals research and minerals information and analysis. A senior advisory staff, consisting of the Chief Staff Officer and Chief Scientist, provides advice and consultation to the Director on a wide range of scientific and technical matters and acts on behalf of the Director to maintain liaison with other government agencies, both foreign and domestic, mineral industries, and professional societies. The Minerals Research Directorate Technological research and development in minerals have long been cornerstones of the Bureau of Mines. The Minerals Research Directorate performs this work. Re-search functions cover the extraction, processing, use, reuse, and disposal of mineral materials; the reduction of health and safety hazards in mining and processing; and minimizing undesirable environmental effects. The production, conservation, sale, and distribution of helium is also conducted under the Research Directorate.

RESEARCH strengthened the position of cesium as the preferred material (commonly but erroneously called "fuel") for ionic propulsion engines. Its use as an element of the plasma thermocouple for generating electricity also seemed more likely. Domestic Production.-No domestic ore of cesium and rubidium was produced. San Antonio Chemicals, Inc., San Antonio, Tex., and Maywood Chemical Works, Maywood, N.J., continued to produce cesium and rubidium compounds including carbonate, chromate, hydroxide, nitrate, sulfate, and all four halides. Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., began producing various cesium and rubidium salts. American Potash & Chemical Corp., Los Angeles, Calif., offered cesium and rubidium for sale.

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a mobile bridge-type cross-pit belt conveyor system in conjunction with a large dragline to excavate and transport spoils in a typical Western surface coal mine. The studies show that such a system could be built to survive operational and climatic mining conditions, and that its implementation would offer a reduction in both acquisition and operating costs versus conventional mining units of comparable capacity. Reclamation costs can also be significantly reduced, and the total reclamation process accelerated, making the cross-pit conveyor system attractive to mine owners and environmentalists alike.

Between 1987 and 1988, the Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of the White River National Forest and part of the Arapaho National Forest to appraise the resources present and to determine the types of deposits, and their location, that could be mined economically if sufficient demand and metal prices existed. The study included a comprehensive literature search and a limited amount of field investigation of minerals and mining activity in and near the Forest. Mineral resource information indicates that in the Gore Range the area between Tennessee Pass and Gilman may contain large base-and precious-metal deposits, and could be the focus of exploration activity in the near future. The Breckenridge mining district was found to have a moderate to high likelihood for mineral exploration and possible development of gold. Recent exploration and minor development work has occurred in several other areas: Montezuma, Kokomo-Tenmile, and Upper Blue River districts, and portions of the Sawatch Range. Limestone, marble, sand and gravel, rock for crushed aggregate, and other industrial rocks have been recently mined or Quarried in the Forrest, and will likely be mined or quarried in the near future. Currently coal is being produced at one mine in the Forest, and extensive identified coal resources are located in the Forest. Parts of four known gas fields lie within the Forest west of Glenwood Springs; there is current production at one field.

The potassium mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H20) found in large deposits in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico is associated with varying amounts of halite (sodium chloride, NaCl) and anhydrite (calcium sulphate, CaSO4). Although the anhydrite, because of its low solubility and slow rate of solution, is relatively inert, the halite is dissolved immediately in any process solution with which the polyhalite comes in contact. Limited quantities of sodium chloride in the liquors used for the hot extraction of polyhalite materially improve the results obtained,4 but only a very small sodium chloride content may be desired in the entering polyhalite in other procedures, such as Bureau of Mines process 75. In. all of the processes suggested for the recovery of potassium sulphate from polyhalite the control of the sodium chloride content will be desirable, if not absolutely essential to efficient operation. OCCURRENCE OF HALITE IN POLYHALITE A preliminary estimate of the amount of halite associated with typical deposits of polyhalite may be derived from drill cores, although it should be remembered that only 50 or 60 core tests have been made in the many hundreds of square miles of the Permian basin. From a mineralogical study of 41 of these cores, Schaller and Henderson6 state: In many of the sections of core that seem when viewed by the unaided eye to consist essentially of polyhalite, both halite and anhydrite are present in greatly varying quantities - with very minor quantities of clay and magnesite.

The final objective of a mine ventilation project is to find a way of supplying the working faces with the necessary quantity of air to dilute all the possible air contaminants to safe limits and to maintain the temperature, humidity and oxygen content within desirable limits. To accomplish the aforesaid, decisions have to be made at early stages of planning and design of a mining operation. That is, ventilation and mine planning are closely related and interdependent, and experience has proved that improvisation as related to mine environment is rarely optimal in ventilation engineering. Mine management should be concerned with two general aspects of ventilation problems. The first is related to the statuatory requirements which are usually the minimum standards that have to be maintained. During the last two decades, mining laws have become increasingly stringent and management of operating mines had to face the effects of these externalities. In some cases these required either a production rate reduction or additional mine development. The second aspect that management should not overlook is the technical and economical importance of mine ventilation on the overall mining cost. In coal mining it is necessary to move, on an average, five tons of air through the mine for each ton of coal produced. The power cost incurred is perhaps the single most important direct cost assigned to ventilation but it is not the only one. Other costs that should be considered include the supervisory labor cost, fan depreciation and maintenance, doors, stoppings and regulators construction cost and maintenance, the additional mine airways development and maintenance because of ventilation requirements. This report describes the development, design, fabrication and testing of a port-able, battery-operated, light scattering monitor (henceforth to be designated as ILSDM) for the rapid measurement of the concentration of respirable dust in mining environments. This instrument incorporates state-of-the-art design characteristics and makes use of advanced solid-state components both for light emission as well as for its detection. The use of a pulsed light source combined with synchronous signal detection minimizes drift problems and optimizes the sensitivity of the measurement. Simplicity of operation, reliability and ruggedness, light weight as well as improved performance were salient objectives of this instrument development program. Continuous clean-air flow screening of all critical optical surfaces, and optimized optical detection and electronic signal processing design resulted in about a hundred-fold decrease of noise and drift with respect to precursor instruments. Equivalent mass concentration measurements 88 low as 10 micrograms per cubic meter can be routinely performed with time constants of about 2 second.

This article updates the status of fatalities occurring in both coal and metal/nonmetal mines from January through December of 2001. Based on preliminary accident reports, as of December 31, 2001, seventy-two fatalities have occurred at coal and metal/ nonmetal mining operations. During this period, forty-two fatalities occurred at coal operations and thirty fatalities occurred at metal/nonmetal operations. Ignition or explosion of gas or dust and fall of roof were the most frequent accident classifications in coal and powered haulage fatalities were the most frequent accident classification in metal/nonmetal.

Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.

This contract is concerned with the construction of a Time Resolved Audio Dosimeter System consisting of one readout unit and several dosimeter units. The Time Resolved Audio Dosimeter System was designed and developed by the Bureau of Mines with the purpose of this contract aimed at obtaining additional units for further field testing and evaluation. All construction was in accordance with the Bureau of Mines design and/or Bureau approved drawings produced during the course of this contract. "INTRODUCTION The Camp Bird mine was investigated by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ September 22 and 24, 1942, and April 29 and 30, 1944. In a subsequent report and supplement, it was recommended that core drilling be done below the 14th. level to determine if commercial ore existed at greater depths, and particularly if ore existed in the vein or adjacent thereto where it passes into the sedimentary formations estimated to underlie the volcanics approximately 400 feet below the 14th level.Seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 3,956 feet were drilled. Four of these holes were under the Hematite ore body and three were under the Big Discovery ore body. Two holes under, the Hematite ore body wore directed at angles but little steeper than the angle of dip of the vein and penetrated the sedimentaries beneath the volcanics close to the vein. Enough low-grade ore was found at the base of the Telluride conglomerate to indicate the presence of a large body of low-grade zinc sulfide ore. Two holes were directed to crosscut the vein at a depth of approximately 125 feet below the 14th level. No commercial ore was cut, but the vein showed the average width and same general characteristics as at the 14th level. One hole under the Big Discovery ore body was directed to crosscut the vein and test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in the footwall block. No commercial ore was found in either the vein or the sedimentary horizon. One hole was directed to test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in close proximity to the vein in the hanging-wall block. This hole was lost approximately 100 feet short of its objective, and a third hole was drilled to accomplish this same thing. The third hole was stopped approximately 50 feet short of its objective when failure of equipment caused a recess of the"

The existing computer programs for the simulation of ventilation systems under normal ventilation conditions are reviewed and a suitable program for including the influence of mine fires is selected. New program parts are written for the consideration of methane productions in coal mines, heat and gas productions of mine fires, temperature and air composition changes in ventilation systems, and the ventilation forces resulting from the latter. Other program parts are provided for the detection of danger zones and reversed air currents and for the inclusion of recirculated air currents in the network analysis. Existing program and new program parts are combined. The resulting new program can be used for a multitude of assignments. It is designed for the practical ventilation engineer and should be applicable to all types of ventilation emergency plans, in particular mine fire plans. The organization of the program and its mathematical basis are described. A FORTRAN IV listing and several flow diagrams are included. Eight executed examples are discussed, input and output for these examples explained. Storage requirements and execution times are estimated.
