A great variety of substance that differ widely in chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties are loosely linked under the generic term "clay", but for the average man all that matters is whether a given material can be sold or used profitably. So-called "clays" range in texture from true clays and allied minerals that are typically "fat" or sticky to fine sand. Sand and other strictly silicious materials, such as tripoli and diatomite, are not clays in any sense; but many commercial clays are strictly loams, for they are intermediate in texture and always contain a mixture of minerals, though the term "loam" has little commercial usage except in foundry work. Even pure kaolinite, ordinarily considered the typical "clay substance", recently was found to exist as three distinct minerals; and each of these, in turn, exhibits variations in particle size and other physical attributes. Probing with the X-ray and employing other modern tools and techniques, scientists are tracing the patterns of molecules and finding chemical and physical phenomena that seem to disclose the causes for the markedly different behavior of the various aluminum silicates with varying proportions of combined and adsorbed water that are the essential ingredients of commercial clays; but rule-of-thumb definitions and enforced reliance upon empirical tests of actual samples still hold sway. In addition to the hydrated simple silicates of aluminum, almost all clays contain quartz, feldspar, and mica with varying amounts of organic matter and, in addition, other impurities - such as iron, manganese, and titanium oxides - that may discolor them sufficiently to render them unfit for certain important uses. The white clays are generally the purest, but no two clays are really alike, and great care must be exercised to maintain a reasonable uniformity in successive shipments even from the same deposit.

"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H. This paper, describing the mining methods and colt at the New Indria quicksilver mine, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on various mines in the United States. The New Idria mine lies at an elevation of 3,500 to 4,200 feet in the Coast Range of San Benito County, Calif. The property is accessible by automobile stages from Gilroy or Hollister via Tres Pinos. Tres Pinos, 65 miles northwest of the mine, is the nearest railroad point.

Experience with the current version of gallery test 4, in use since 1913 to evaluate the incendivity of permissible explosives in the presence of coal dust, has shown the procedure to have inadequate discrimination. Consequently the Bureau of Mines used the up-and-down method of statistical design to investigate the incendivity of permissible explosives in the presence of coal dust and gas. A suitable device was developed to measure coal dust concentrations in the air-gas mixtures and to disperse the dust in the gallery atmosphere. A proposed testing method which uses suspended shots in a predispersed coal dust-gas-air mixture was evaluated. The new method can discriminate between different explosives with respect to their incendivity. Maximum ignitibility of the coal dust cloud by permissible explosives occurred in the vicinity of 0.3 oz/cu ft. About 10% sodium chloride in permissible explosive formulations had a very significant effect in reducing the probability of igniting coal dust. Bundled charges were more incendive than column charges.

The primary objective of the research was to grow aluminum borate whiskers or fibers and to determine their properties . Molten salt bath and vapor deposition methods were used for synthesis . Whiskers exceeding 25 mm in length were grown . The best results were obtained by vapor deposition and most of the data presented were determined on whiskers produced by this method of synthesis . Three different aluminum borate compositions ( 4.8A1203 B₂03 , 3.8A1203 B203 , and 2.5A120, B203 ) were identified by X- ray and chemical analyses . The aluminum borates 4.8A1203 B20, X- ray diffraction pattern was indexed . Optical data were obtained on the three aluminum borates . In addition the following whisker properties and growth factors were determined : ideal atmospheric dewpoint for vapor deposition method , near 65 ° F ; temperature range of whisker formation , 1,000 ° to 1,400 ° C for the molten bath method of synthesis , > 1,000 ° to < 1,400 ° C for the vapor deposition method ; whisker growth rates by the vapor deposition method , maximum 12 mm per hour ; raw material vaporization , 50 to 60 percent of the fluoride lost in 1 hour ; tensile strength , maximum obtained 174,162 psi ; melting points , ranged from 1,675 ° to 1,795 ° C.

A complete list of permissible mining equipment, rescue apparatus and gas masks tested prior to July 1, 1928, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 60772. The present list includes practically all equipment tested and, approved by the Bureau, up to and including Jan. 1, 1929. It covers electric air compressors, coal drills, mining machines, loading machines, conveyors, mine pumps, room hoists, mine telephones, rock-dusting machines, switches, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, flash lamps, methane indicators and detectors, blasting units, storage barrery locomotives, tandem locomotives, power trucks, concrete mixers, self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and gas masks. The system under which those devices were tested permits the manufacturer, after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the Bureau of Mines, to mark his equipment with a seal shoring that it has been "approved" by the Bureau. These tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the Bureau in making such tests and pub- lishing lists of permissible equirment is to safeguard the lives of workers and to help lesson the hazards of mining.

This preliminary statement presents some of the results of tests carried out at the Lakeside Station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Co. , by the fuel section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation of New York . The object of these tests was to determine the thermal efficiency , ease of operation , and other particulars of a boiler equipped with specially designed furnace and burners for burning powdered coal . The boiler tested haş 13380 square feet of heating surface , and is one of eight boilers equipped with the Lopulco powdered coal system supplying steam to two 20,000 -Kw . steam turbines in the largest power house burning powdered coal . Twenty- six tests were run at rates of heat transference varying from 4000 to 8000 B.t.u. per square foot of boiler heating surface , and the mean thermal efficiency attained was about 84 per cent , based on the gross calorific value of the fuel as fired . The efficiency varied little with the rate of steaming , and its high value is accounted for by the small loss from incomplete combustion and the small amount of excess air which varied from 5 to 36 per cent . The coal burned had a gross calorific value of about 11500 to 12800 B.t.u. per pound , contained 2 to 5 per cent moisture , 33 to 36 per cent volatile matter and 9 to 13 per cent ash, and was so ground thaf 89 to 95 per cent would pass through a 100- mesh sieve . The ash had a softening point of 2150 to 2450 degrees F. , but did not fuse together at the bottom of the furnace because it was partly protected from the flame radiation by means of a series of water tubes connected to the boiler which were placed between the fumace bottom and the flame, ..

"This paper presents an analysis of the effect of the dynamics of bit wear on dust generation. Two surveys have been conducted in order to assess the mechanism and type of bit wear and to evaluate the impact of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Used bits were collected from the underground coal mines and these used bits were utilized in laboratory coal cutting. The effect of bit wear on dust generation has been quantified and its impacted on dust generation and ventilation system has been exemplified.INTRODUCTION Research has reduced the prevalence of Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis from 15 to 5 percent according to NIOSH reports (Breslin 1982). However CWP still have not been eliminated as a hazard to mine workers. To prevent coal workers from having black lung MSHA has established a very strict standard for coal mine operations (2.0 mg/m3 with silica content equal to or less than 0.1 mg/m3,). There are numerous coal operations still experiencing great difficulty with meeting the 2mg/m3 dust standard. Among these are the longwall sections and continuous mining sections. In order to meet the rising demand of energy and coal, the number of longwall operations and continuous mining operations would have to be increased. Thus a long term research commitment is required to develop basic solutions that are more generic and greater benefit to the mining and mineral industry.In continuous-mining operations, the miners are exposed to the dust produced during the fragmentation of the coal from the face plus the dust produced during loading and transferring of the coal. The fragmentation process generates most of the respirable dust. The amount of dust generated during fragmentation depended on the coal properties, cutting parameters and cutting bit configuration. Bit wear changes bit configuration, therefore, it also affects dust generation. Bit wear can be defined as the removal of material from surface as a result of mechanical action. In soft coal mines bit wear may not be a serious problem but in hard coal seams bit wear is very significant. In addition, as the good coal seams are depleted, the operators are mining thin seams and the seams with rock partings. During cutting these seams operators are sometimes forced to cut roof and floor rock or rock partings which result in more rapid wear of bits."

A new, cheaper precipitation scheme has been developed to produce purified zirconium oxide, Technical-grade sulfuric acid is used to precipitate a basic zirconium sulfate from a hot dilute hydrochloric acid solution. With close control of temperature, pH, and zirconium - sulfate ratio, excellent purification and complete zirconium recovery can be attained. The process has been successfully applied for 3 months and has proved to be a more satisfactory procedure than the ammonium phthalate process used previously. The following experimental hypothesis was to be tested: Null Hypothesis: the coefficients a = 0 J Alternate Hypothesis: One or more of the coefficients a 0 J Correlation and Regression To establish the alternate hypothesis and to test how well the proposed model fits the data, the conventional statistical techniques of correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used. Additionally, factor analysis was employed to investigate the dependency relationships in the data. Correlation and linear regression are well established statistical procedures in science and engineering. References on these procedures include Spiegel (1961), Anderson (1963), and Draper and Smith (1966). A simple example is stated here. If N observations are made of two variables, x and y, and it is desired to test this data to see if a linear relationship exists, then a model of the form: Y = a0 + a 1 x A-2 is proposed. A sedimentation method involving the use of the Palo-Travis apparatus was found satisfactory for rapid determination of the size distribution of coal particles ranging from 10 microns in diameter to those passing an 840-micron opening (20-mesh sieve), The method is most useful for comparing the size distributions of samples of pulverized coal where the actual size of the particles is not required and is applicable to sieve and subsieve sizes of a wide variety of coals and chars that can be wetted and are heavier than water. An analysis, including all calculations, can be completed in 1/2 to 10 hours, depending on the time required for the finely divided coal to settle. A typical analysis requires about an hour, making this a rapid, precise method for routine size-distribution analysis of powdered coals. When used with coal particles smaller than 400 microns, the method is precise within 15 microns for wide variations in test conditions and within 5 microns for identical test conditions. The precision decreases as particle size increases, becoming unsatisfactory for particles larger than 400 microns (40-mesh). For precision within 15 microns, the samples must be equal in weight. Greater precision is obtained with 4-gram samples, but samples as small as l gram may be used.

The basic mining law of Cuba is contained in the basic Spanish mining decree having the effect of law December 29 , 1868. This legislation has remained substantially unchanged , with the exception of a few minor administrative changes made by the present Government . These changes provide for the register of mines , oil wells , and operations of such nature , and also provide for the keeping of records showing the value of minerals taken out . By Royal decree of April 17 , 1883 , the law of mines enacted for the Peninsula ( Spain ) on July 6 , 1859 , and the General Bases of December 29 , 1868 , were declared in force in Cuba . In order to encourage the mining of iron org , in 1883 the Crow of Spain issued a royal decree to the following effect.

The tests and studies begun by the United States Geological Survey in the fall of 1908 with a view to lessening the accidents attending the use of explosives in coal mining are being continued by the Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh experiment station and in the field. One hundred and six applications for the testing of 209 different explo- sives had been received at the Pittsburgh station prior to March 1, 1913, and on that date 97 explosives that had passed the required tests were on the "permissible" list issued by the bureau. This bul- letin gives the results of tests of all permissible explosives tested between May 15, 1909, and March 1, 1913. Bulletin 15 entitled "Investigations of Explosives used in Coal Mines" contains the results of tests of 17 permissible explosives tested prior to May 15, 1909. A copy of the test requirements and the names of explosives on the per- missible list dated March 1, 1913, are appended to this bulletin. An explosive is considered permissible for use in coal mines when it is similar in all respects to the sample that passed the tests required by the bureau, and when it is used in accordance with the conditions prescribed. The physical tests reported in this bulletin were conducted by Messrs. H. F. Braddock, A. J. Strane, J. W. Koster, A. S. Crossfield, A. J. Hazlewood, A. B. Coates, and J. E. Tiffany at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau. The act of Congress making appropriations for sundry civil ex- penses of the Government for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1912, authorized the Secretary of the Interior to charge a fee covering the actual necessary expenses involved in making such tests by the Bureau of Mines as might be approved by him. After careful consideration had been given to the actual necessary expenses involved in the test- ing of explosives to determine their permissibility for use in coal mines, the sum of $150 was approved by the Secretary of the Interior as a reasonable charge for each complete official test. During the first year this law was in effect the fees collected amounted to more than $6,000.

No producing mines are in the study area. Sample results indicate the only resources in the study area are low grade phosphate deposits associated with Cuyama Phosphate Mine (fig. 1). Within the study area, are more than 21.4 million tons of inferred subeconomic phosphate rock resources which would be reserves at an 80 percent higher phosphoric acid price; weighted average grade is 4.84 percent phosphorous pentoxide (P205). About 17.6 million tons of similar grade are outside the area to the northwest. The South Cuyama Oil Field, adjacent to the study area (fig. 1), produces petroleum from the Vaqueros Formation which underlies parts of the study area. Oil and gas potential was evaluated by U.S. Geological Survey. INTRODUCTION Location, Size, and Geographic Setting The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Fox Mountain RARE II area (No. 5120) during the summer of 1981. The area was examined to determine the presence or absence of mineral resources and reserves, and to estimate tonnage and grade where possible.

The conventional gallery test used by the Bureau of Mines Explosives Testing Station and corresponding establishments in other countries to establish the permissibility of explosives serves principally to differentiate the relatively safe explosive from the positively unsafe one. It has been recognized for many years that a more definitive test is needed to measure the relative incendivity to firedamp of explosives and explosive devices. A new method - the oxygen-value test - for measuring this incendivlty quantitatively has been devised and is being tested at Bruceton, Pa. To date, this testing bas been limited mainly to straight nitroglycerin dynamites. It is planned to study application of the method to permissible explosives in the near future. These results will be reported later. In the present report, permissible explosives will not be considered specifically.

Bonding angles, promotion energies, and relative atomic sizes can be estimated through the solution of a set of algebraic equations generated from simple atomic models, and quantum mechanical parameters such as bond strength can be estimated from simple, hydrogenic form-wave functions. The precepts of The Engel-Brewer Theory are melded with the "Crystal Approximation Model" to produce atomic-structure models making these predictions, The two-valence-electron case is presented in this report. For the candidate atoms Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba the calculated promotion energies agreed within a few percent of their experimental values. These atomic parameters determine the possible crystal structure of the candidate atoms when alloyed. This is part of the effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop methods for alloy design in response to requirements for new high-performance alloys that conserve critical or rare materials.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.

Traditional techniques for the experimental determination of toxic fumes produced by the detonation of high explosives are not applicable to blasting agents. To detonate properly, blasting agents require confinement, a significant booster, charge diameters of 3 inches (7.5 cm) or greater, and charge lengths greater than two-times the charge diameter. Without these conditions, blasting agents will not detonate at full order, leading to a misrepresentation of the gaseous products. A facility for detonating large, confined charges in a controlled volume has been constructed at the Pittsburgh Research Center’s Experimental Mine. The facility consists of a portion of mine entry (once used for full-scale mine explosion research and demonstrations) enclosed between two explosion proof bulkheads. Total volume of the chamber is 9,666 ft (274 m). The chamber is equipped with an air circulating system and is3 3vented using the mine&apos;s airflow. Up to 10-pound (4.5-kg) charges can be detonated in the chamber using a variety of confinements. For a typical test, the blasting agent is confined in a 4-inch (10-cm) schedule 80 steel pipe and initiated by a 3-inch (7.5-cm) diameter, 1-inch (2.5-cm) thick Pentolite booster. This combination of confinement and initiation yields a detonation velocity of about 4,000 m/sec for ANFO. This velocity is in line with that measured for blasting in the field. Twenty four 2-inch thick steel plates are suspended around the pipe bomb to stop shrapnel that would otherwise seriously damage the chamber. Following detonation of an explosive in the chamber, a circulating fan is run for about 10 minutes to uniformly mix the chamber atmosphere. Fumes samples are taken out of the chamber through 1/4-inch (0.6-cm) Teflon or polyethylene2tubes for analysis. The fumes are analyzed using bubblers or Vacutainers to collect samples for analysis by the analytical chemistry lab. The technique described here has been employed to determine the fumes produced by the detonation of a variety of ANFO formulations and commercial explosives. This technique may be developed as a standard test to measure fumes produced by blasting agents or may be used to provide data with which to develop a computer model that will reliably predict the expected fumes production based on chemical composition.

The precious stones rubies and sapphires are transparent varieties of the mineral corundum . Essentially they are aluminum oxide , but the aluminum is often replaced. by small amounts of chromium , titanium , or iron . The chromium is said to give a red color , titanium a blue , and iron a yellow . True rubies range from rose to a somewhat purplish red and are sometimes termed " oriental rubies " to distinguish them from spinel rubies , stones of inferior hardness , density , and value . " Oriental rubies " are very rare , and the so-called " pigeon's blood" variety is the most valuable . Sapphires normally range in color from palest blue to deepest indigo , but actually all precious varieties of corundum of any other color than red are called sapphires . The most esteemed tint is like that of the blue cornflower . Colorless corundum of gem quality is called white sapphire ; the yellow variety is described either as yellow or as golden sapphire ; and the pale pink is classed as pink sapphire . The word " oriental " is also used as a prefix in naming varieties of corumdum of less popular colors . For instance , oriental emerald is used for green corundum, oriental topaz for yellow , and oriental amethyst for violet to purple varieties . The chief physical characteristics of rubies and sapphires are hardness , adamantine luster , and moderately high specific gravity ( 3.9 to 4.1) . Next to the diamond, corundum is the hardest of all minerals ; in fact , the sapphire is number 9 on Moh's scale , ranking between the topaz and the diamond. Rubies crystallize in 6-sided prisms terminated by flat faces and other varieties of corundum with twelve inclined faces , six above and six below , meeting in a girdle . Corundum is doubly refractive , with a direction of single refraction running parallel to the edge of the prism . The refractive indexes are very constant, the ordinary index ranging from 1.766 to 1.774 and the extraordinary index from 1.757 to 1.765. The double refraction always remains the same.
