"INTRODUCTION The Mesabi iron district of Minnesota has a potential production of over 50 million tons of iron ore annually. The large shipments of ore each year are gradually depleting the reserves, and if the present rate of production is to be maintained there must be a growth in the present available ore supply.Growth is a natural course. The growth of a city may be affected by the addition of city blocks or by the improvement of utilities necessary for its betterment, these may go on in the order named or concurrently. The city-block type of growth of the Mesabi has been tremendous, and the ""betterment"" type has followed in due course. Probably the former has reached its limit, and if so, more time will be allotted to the latter. It is not the intent of this paper to present either a eulogy of the wonderful mining methods or a history of the milling, but it is pertinent to say that if the lean-ore area continues to produce, the continuance will be more the result of further improvement of milling methods now well under way than of extension of boundaries by the city block plan of growth.In an examination of the western end of the Mesabi district one finds sludge basins containing millions of tons of millable ore rejected by washing plants which were built for economy in operating cost and with little thought of conservation, and rich tailings piles of jigging plant rejects. In addition, there is an appreciable tonnage of bawl rake pro-ducts so low-grade that it requires mixing with the best ore of the district to make it merchantable.Any of these three products is a source of additional reserves, but gangue must be removed before the products will comply with blast-furnace stipulations. All investigators are agreed that to effect this separation comminution must be fine enough for liberation, but beyond this point opinions diverge; some would seek new processes, while others adhere to methods and machines developed in other mining districts.In the investigation by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines working in conjunction with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy,Rolla, Mo., the latter course has been followed. Attention was first given to the sludge basins mentioned. From their contents good grades of concentrates were made and the results published 4 later commercial-scale tests were made in a pilot plant of 10 tables, and the laboratory results were confirmed, The tailings from jigging plants are high in iron, and a study of their possible retreatment showed that if they are recrushed, high recoveries of acceptable grade may be expected. High-volume, low-pressure water jets have been employed for erosion of loosely consolidated rocks for centuries. This excavation method finds application in specialized circumstances even today. The use of high-pressure, low-volume water jets for rock cutting is more recent and was made possible by the development of high-pressure water pumps. Despite the benefits often claimed for these systems, high-pressure water jets still have not found widespread application. In this report, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has reviewed the various methods that have been employed using water jets to break rock and has focused on one method, termed "jet-assisted cutting," which was determined to be the closest to commercial development. The current state of knowledge based on laboratory and field experiences using this cutting method is reviewed, and possible future developments for this approach to excavation are assessed.

Objective Develop a method to warn of hazardous conditions and enhance safety during operation and inspection of vertical mine shafts and hoists. Background Mine hoisting is the most critical and potentially the most dan¬gerous operation in underground mining. Many hazards are related to falls of miners and materials, ground instability, and malfunction or lack of safety devices. All have the potential to cause a cata¬strophic accident. A condition known as "slack rope" is particularly dangerous, expecially if it occurs without the operator's awareness. The most common occurrence of slack rope is in metal or nonmetal mines that have a history of ground control problems near the "haft. Approach Studies of hoist safety features and Mine Safely a and Heath Administration (MSHA) accident statistics suggests a need to measure wire rope tension, conveyance speed and position, and shaft guide misalignment. The most accurate data are obtained directly from the conveyance. Such data could warn of potentially dangerous situations during hoisting operations, as well as during inspections, maintenance, and lowering of large equipment. Figure I shows the concept for monitoring wire rope tension, conveyance position, and guide displacement. Progress to Date A conveyance-mounted system has been developed that monitors rope tension: hoist conveyance position, speed, and load; and shaft guide misalignment. A "flex-beam" load sensor mounted just above the- conveyance protects against slack and tight rope. The measurements are transmitted 60 times a second via wireless equipment from the conveyance to the hoist room. An encoder mounted on the conveyance eliminates the need to correct the position because of rope stretch. Figure 2 shows the encoder wheel and guide displacement sensors being mounted on a cage in¬spection deck. A potentiometer monitors misalignment of the shaft guides during inspections. Information about the cage or skip can be acquired by the shaft inspector using a hand-held indicator. Inspection can also he conducted remotely from a station or hoist room using the wireless link to a laptop computer. Figure 3 shows test results from a simulated slack rope condition. Patent Status NIOSH has a patent pending on this device entitled "Cable-Load¬Sensing Device." USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers. A great deal of experience has been gained as a result of this contract. A final discrete potted printed circuit configuration has been arrived at that is now ready for field testing. After field testing, any desired changes should be incorporated into a final design. However, as a result of the current experience gained building and testing the production units, this printed circuit package together with potting procedure could be improved to reduce future costs. For example, the printed circuit board could be increased in size by 0.125 to 0.2 inches and all components could be mounted directly to the board eliminating costly hand stacking of components. This report discusses some of the chemistry and geochemistry of cesium and rubidium. Knowledge of the cesium and rubidium content of oilfield waters aids in resolving the origin of waters and petroleum, exploring for petroleum and other valuable minerals, discovering water pollution sources, and augmenting the knowledge of geologic formations. The methods described in this report permit the detection of less than 0.01 mg/l of cesium and/or rubidium in a complex oilfield brine or water. Solvents possessing high-dielectric constants were evaluated for their ability to extract cesium and rubidium tetraphenylboron from oilfield waters and for their flame emission characteristics. Nitroethane was selected and used for the extraction and flame spectrophotometric determinations because it gave the highest sensitivity. Cesium 137 and rubidium 86 were used to determine the extraction efficiencies, which were about 87 percent and 58 percent respectively using a single 10 ml nitroethane extraction from a distilled water matrix. The standard deviation of the determination was 0.0008 mg for cesium and 0.0007 mg for rubidium in the 0.01 mg range.

A Bureau of Mines survey of noise from quarry production blasting was conducted at seven crushed-stone quarries, providing information on close-in noise generation, comparative instrumentation, and evaluation of the sound levels as related to blasting parameters and existing State and local noise standards. The results from this preliminary survey will be useful in the design of a complete investigation of the problem of noise from blasting. There exists an immediate need for technical guidelines for noise pollution control agencies presently working on the regulation of impulsive noise sources. This survey and results from previous work by other researchers are used to derive interim recommendations on weighting scales, generated sound levels, and instrumentation. These recommendations are based on the limited data presently available and may be modified with subsequent investigation of noise generation, propagation, structural damage, and human tolerance.

Brine produced from subsurface formations may be employed successfully instead of fresh water as a flooding, medium in the secondary recovery of oil. The feasibility of this substitution has been proved in the shallow "shoestring" area of eastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, where the supply of fresh water often is limited. In this procedure all brine produced with the oil is returned to the formation and thus is prevented from contaminating streams and fresh-water supplies. This report includes a detailed description of a "flood project" in eastern Kansas studied by the Bureau of Mines. In an attempt to determine whether brine, when handled properly, can be used as effectively as fresh water in flooding oil from partly depleted, formations, an analysis was made of all .own conditions that influence flooding.

A small-scale laboratory coke oven similar to those described by Swiniarski, Cryan, and Altieri and Fuchs, Sandhoff, Taylor, and Gauger was built by the Bureau of Mines in 1943. Tests made since that time have indicated that such a small oven is of questionable value in predicting the coking pressures to be expected in commercial coke ovens. This summary of the work done has been prepared at the suggestion of the Advisory Committee to the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association Survey of Carbonizing Prop¬erties of American Coals.

This report describes the design and initial operation of a slagging gasification pilot plant installed by the Bureau of Mines at the Lignite Research Laboratory, Grand Forks, N. Dak., in 1958-59. The tests covered in this report were conducted over a period of about 2 years, beginning in April 1959. The pilot plant was designed for eventual operation at pressures ranging from 400 to 600 p.s.i.g. (pounds per square inch gage); however, for the preliminary test reported here, the gasifier was fitted with a low-pressure slagging section and operated at atmospheric pressure and at 80 p.s.i.g. The reason for using a low-pressure slagging section for initial operation was to facilitate modifications in design during the development of a reliable slagging procedure.

"N-acetyl-beta(B)-D-glucosaminidase is a N-acetyl-beta((B)-D-glucosaminidase enzyme se¬creted by alveolar macrophages in response to phagocytosis of particulate material. Alveolar macrophages participate in the degradation and fibrosis of pulmonary tissue that results in pneumoconiosis. Known quantities of four characterized respirable dusts were bronchoscopically placed into the right caudal lung lobe of macaque monkeys. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples were collected from dust-exposed right lung and unexposed left lung of the same individuals at 2-week intervals for 12 weeks after dust instillation. The samples were tested for N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase activity to determine if the enzyme levels could serve as an indicator of pulmonary injury induced by generic coal dusts when compared to known fibrogenic and nuisance dusts. Installation of generic quartz, anthracite, or TiO2 dusts produced significant elevations of enzyme activity and increased numbers of macrophages in the dust-exposed lobes. Elevations in enzymatic activity and macrophage numbers were greatest in response to generic quartz dust. These results suggest that quantitative levels of N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase activity may be a useful indicator of acute and chronic lung injury following exposure to fibrogenic and nonfibrogenic dusts.IntroductionCoal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) is an occupational pulmonary disease associated with the inhalation of coal mine dust. An important external factor in the development of CWP is the composition of the respirable coal mine dust. A cause-and-effect relationship exists between coal mine dust and CWP, but it has not been shown that exposure to generic coal dusts will cause CWP [12]. Numerous immunological, biochemical, and cellular changes occur in CWP; however, in this study, only N-acetyl-beta(B)-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase), protein, and alveolar macrophages (AM) will be examined [7, 32, 33]."

An improved parachute-type stopping for changing the course of mine ventilation air during mine emergencies has been developed by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation for The Bureau of Mines. The stopping can be quickly deployed by one man from a single attachment point and provides excellent stopping performance with the flow in the design direction. Adding pin and foam attachments between its skirt and the passage-way surfaces improves its performance with flow in the design direction and maintains the stopping with zero or reverse air flows. Stopping performance results for a range of airway sizes including 7.5 X 10 ft simulated airway with pressure differentials of up to 3.0 inches of water are presented. Predicted performance values for this stopping design for larger passageways are also presented.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Utah Copper Co., Bingham Canyon, Utah, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Utah Copper Co. operates the low-grade open-out copper mine at Bingham Canyon, Utah, which is 30 miles in a southwesterly direction from Salt Lake City. In addition to the mine the company operates two flotation concentrators, the Magma plant and the Arthur plant, which have a combined capacity at maximum metallurgical efficiency of 60,000 tons daily. The concentrators are at Magna, about 18 miles from the mine. The company operates its own standard-gage railway, known as the Bingham and Garfield Railway, between the mine and the mills (fig. 1). Concentrates are smelted at the Garfield smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., situated 4 miles from the mills.

A combined ion - exchange X- ray spectrographic method was developed and evaluated for determining trace amounts of cobalt and nickel in high - purity tungsten and tungsten trioxide . The sensitivity for both cobalt and nickel is in the range from 0.2 to 0.5 μg ( 0.04 to 0.1 ppm , based on 5 gram samples ) . Accuracy at the 5 to 20 μg level is ±10 percent of the amount present . Laboratory batch and small - scale continuous flotation tests were conducted on a ferruginous barite - fluorspar ore from near Sweetwater , Tenn . , to determine the feasibility of producing commercial - grade fluorspar and barite concentrates . The lignin sulfonate - sodium fluoride - fatty acid method of floating fluorspar produced acid - grade concentrates . Flotation of the barite from the fluorspar tailing using petroleum sulfonate yielded concentrates suitable for use as a weighting agent in oil -well drilling muds . The continuous flotation tests , treating about 150 pounds of ore per hour , yielded fluorspar concentrates that assayed 98.3 percent CaF2 and barite concentrates that assayed 91.2 percent BaSO4 . The recovery of the two minerals was 91.2 and 85.2 percent , respectively .

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of shredded automobile scrap for copper cementation. Air agitation was used to improve the cementation rate and prevent excessive buildup of copper on the iron. The pieces of scrap were too large to be properly evaluated in the laboratory; therefore, a pilot scale test unit was constructed and the process tested at field locations. Pregnant solution was obtained from industrial leaching operations, processed in the test unit and the barren solution and cement copper were returned to the plant process stream. The test results showed that the air-agitated launder containing auto-mobile scrap was an effective means for recovering copper from leach solutions. A continuous l4-day test run was made without a noticeable decrease in cementation efficiency. The most suitable scrap product was obtained from incinerated automobile hulks shredded in a hammer type of shredder. However, it was necessary to remove small pieces such as nuts and bolts because they interfered with the discharge of the copper product.

The ease of ignition and violence of explosion of Utah coal dusts, together with the large volumes of methane given off in some of the mines of the State, made it imperative to abandon obsolete equipment and obviously hazardous practices for up-to-date equipment and safer methods of mining if reasonable progress wore to be attained in fire and explosion prevention. Although much can still be done to improve safety conditions in Utah coal mines, considerable progress has been made in the past 10 years. The fundamentals of such progress include increased use of permissible electrical equipment in gassy mines, closed lights, rock-dusting, more liberal use of water at the face, butter ventilation, permissible explosives fired electrically both within and without the mine, partial inhibition of blasting while the shift is in the mine, 100-percent first-aid training, increased supervision and inspection, and mass safety meetings.

The objective of this circular is threefold: First, to describe briefly the various modes of occurrence of sand and gravel. Second, to emphasize the need for adequate prospect¬ ing and exploration prior to the expenditure of funds for development and plant construction. Third, to describe various methods of prospecting and exploration and their application to the several modes of occurrence of sand and gravel. Sand and gravel may be found in nearly every county or township in the United States. Commercial deposits, however, are by no means so widespread. The introduction of concrete and the consequent impetus given to consumption of gravel and sand aggregates has seriously depleted deposits in some congested areas. Increasing re¬ strictions in the specification requirements for marketing sands and gravels have further narrowed the economic areas. On the other hand, the combination of increasing transportation costs and decreasing selling prices has forced the decentralization of gravel production. As a result smaller, intermittently operated, and widely scattered portable or semiportable unit plants have been encroaching on the territory formerly supplied from centrally located pits with large tr.atment plants. Generally speaking, the small portable plant can not produce any great variety of ma¬ terials to as exacting specifications nor as economically as the large permanent plant.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to investigate the ease of frictional ingition with frozen (nonrotating) conical bits cutting into sandstone. The number of strikes with a new bit to obtain ignition of a combustible methane-air environment was measured. Tests were made with bits tipped with both tungsten carbide and steel at several bit attack angles (angle between bit axis and sandstone surface) and initial tip angles (included angle at the tip of the new bit). Carbide-tipped bits required more strikes for ingition than steel-tipped bits, by a factor of 7 to 10. With a carbide-tipped bit, the number of strikes for ingition increased by a factor of about 3 if the bit attack angle increased by 10° or if the initial tip angle decreased by 10°. During use, abrasive wear of the frozen bit caused a flat surface to form at the tip of the bit, thereby decreasing the tip angle. As the attack angle increased, however, the new bit involved a smaller wear-flat area whereby, abrasive wear was decreased.

This is a revision of a directory of coal research organizations throughout the world that was first published in 1961 as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8008. Because of the wide acceptance of the first edition, a revision which would supply up-to-date information on coal research and which would facilitate communication among organizations of similar interest seemed important. This compilation includes the names and activities of organizations of various types-government, university, private, and industry. The areas of investigation that each organization is engaged in are indicated in broad terms: Analysis and constitution, mining and geology, preparation, briquetting, combustion, high- and low-temperature carbonization, gasification, conversion to solid and liquid fuels, and health and safety. Publications issued by and describing the work of each organization are cited; almost all of the organizations also publish results of their investigations in the technical press. Selected technical and trade publications that publish information on the science and technology of coal and are not published directly by any of the organizations listed are cited in the pages following the list of organizations in each country.
