A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

The objectives for the research project, "Coal Mine Injury Analysis: A Model for Reduction Through Training," were to identify and develop a means to indicate deficiences in human performance, job skills, and/or knowledge at a given mine site that are amenable to alleviation through training or job redesign, and to provide ;I set of analytical tools and training resources that will enable mine training personnel to effectively incorporate the noted deficiencies into a personalized model training program. The findings of this research project are contained in Light separate volumes. Volume I represents the Executive Summary of the study and provides a broad overview of the project's individual areas of emphasis and deliverables. The additional eight volumes provide greater detail on the development of a Model Mine Training Program based upon Professional Database Analysis, Incident Reporting, Loss Control, Job Safety Analysis, Risk Assessment, Cost/Benefit Analysis, and Mine Safety Management.

Systematic waterflooding was first tried in Washington County, Okla., in 1937, when a 40-acre project was begun in secs. 24, 29, 32, and 33, T. 27 N., R. 13 E., jointly by the Keener Oil Co. and the Phillips Petroleum Co. The property later was sold to Lee Morrison. A second project was begun in 1941 in sec. 14, T. 6 N., R. 12 E., by the Oklahoma Oil Corp. Both projects were abandoned by the end of 1942. A third project was begun in 1945 and the fourth in 1948, but 1949 actually was the beginning of intensive waterflooding development in Washington County. The results of previous waterflooding projects are described in Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.2 3 4/ Oil production in the county followed a similar trend, dropping to a low of 990,000 barrels in 1945, then steadily increasing until 1956, when more than 4 mil-lion barrels of oil was produced. Most of the increase in oil production is directly attributable to water injection.

Significant amounts of cobalt are present in readily accessible spent copper leach solutions. The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of extracting cobalt from these solutions in a multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) column. The effects of aqueous flow rate, resin flow rate, column height, and compartment height on cobalt extraction were determined. Cobalt extractions of 92 pct or higher were achieved at solution flow rates of up to 5.5 gpm/ft of column cross-sectional area and an aqueous-to-resin flow ratio of 40:1. Overall cobalt extraction increased as the column height increased, but cobalt extraction per unit of length was more efficient in 8-and 12-ftco1umns than in an 18-ft column. Solvent extraction procedures were utilized to purify and concentrate the MCIX column eluates and produce a cobalt sulfate solution containing 70 to 80 giL Co. Metallic cathodes containing over 99 pct Co were e1ectrowon from this solution. Zinc, nickel, and copper byproducts were also recovered during processing of the ion-exchange eluates. Estimated total capital cost for a commercial-scale 10,000 gpm of a spent leach solution containing 26 million. With credits for zinc, nickel, and copper estimated net operating cost was $9.36/lb Co.

Objective A cable bolt can be a strain-measuring device as well as a supporting device in underground mines. Placing instruments on a cable bolt allows certain characteristics of a rock mass, such as high strain and load, to he evaluated during mining and provides a means for mining engineers and mine inspectors to forecast a potential roof fall. Background Thousands of cable bolts are installed in U.S. mines each year. Studies performed by NIOSH researchers show that support loads can exceed the yield point of the steel, which can result in unstable ground conditions that pose direct safety hazards for underground workers. Rock falls can also create secondary hazards, such as caved escape ways and blocked ventilation passages. Development of methods and tools to assist in the evaluation and selection of rock supports could reduce the number of unplanned rock falls significantly. Approach Instrumented cable bolts developed at NIOSH’s Spokane Research Laboratory were used along with existing ground control systems to monitor rock mass loads and movement Axial and shear loads on the cables are determined as these loads are transferred to strain gages embedded in the king wire. In longwall, room-and-pillar, or underhand cut-and-fill mines, rock mass loads and movements can be detected down to microstrains of stress or millimeters of movement. By detecting such small amounts of ground movement and support load, early intervention to prevent a roof fall is possible, and miner safety and health are increased. How it Works Up to 10 strain gages are embedded in the king wire at whatever locations a mine ground control engineer may specify. The gages m either be set in pairs in the same plane to detect shear or set at 90° angles to detect loading in three dimensions. The cables are up to 5 meters long if they arc to be grouted with resin or up to 15 meters: if they will be grouted with cement. They arc capable of holding m ultimate lend of 214 kN and produce reliable readings to 178 kN, as shown in the calibration curve. The cables are fitted with an instrument plug for monitoring the gages and a special head for insertion into the rock. A data acquisition system, such as a Vishay strain indicator box, Campbell Scientific, or Omnidata system, is required to obtain the data for load and displacement calculations.

To develop a method for predicting the stability of a fuel during long-term storage from rapid aging tests at 200° F, the Bureau of Mines determined the stabilities of three gasoline base stocks and an alkylate blending stock in both sealed storage and aerated storage at 110° F for periods extending to 32 weeks. Stabilities of samples containing gasoline-additive compounds were compared by aging, using two methods--rapid aging in a bomb at 200° F for intervals up to 16 hours and storage at 110° F. The additives used were an uninhibited tetraethyllead motor mix, N,N'-di-sec-buty1-p-phenylenediamine and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpheno1. Results were related by graphs that enable predictions of gum and sediment formation during storage from data obtained in bomb tests. A premium-gasoline base stock and the alkylate proved to be stable, but the two regular-grade gasoline base stocks were found to be unstable. Addition of the diamine antioxidant improved the stability of both of the regular gasoline base stocks, while the phenol antioxidant improved only one of them. The presence of the tetraethyllead decreased the storage stability of all four fuels, both with respect to formation of gum and precipitation of inorganic sediment. The rapid test at 200° F appears to offer promise as a basis for a method of predicting gasoline stability in long-term 110° F storage.

Objective To develop and evaluate the effectiveness of safety training tools specific to the underground hard-rock mining industry. Background Scaling, the removal of loose rock from the roofs and walls of a mine by manual or mechanized means, may be necessary during any stage of mining. Manual scaling is very labor intensive, and mechanical methods can be too powerful and actually produce a less stable roof.

"INTRODUCTION There are presented in this report the results of limited studies by the Bureau of Mines of the firedamp safety of some powder-powered tools proposed for use underground in coal mines. A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the ninth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township map. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

An investigation is made of the feasibility of developing compact transmit antennas and/or other means to efficiently couple VLF to MF band radio energy between portable wireless communication units in coal minus. The completely wireless communication ranges between two portable radios equipped with practically-sized reference loop antennas in representative coal mine environments are estimated. Antenna technology is assessed with respect to transmit moment, range, intrinsic safety, battery and wearability requirements to determine the most suitable antenna types for use by miners. It is concluded that air-core bandolier loop antennas, and perhaps ferrite-loaded loop antennas, having peak transmit moments of about 2.5 ampere-m2 will be the most effective antenna choices for portable units. This choice, however, will not allow the range goal of 1350 feet to he attained in mines having unfavorable signal attenuation and noise environments. Rectangular air-core loops are compared with grounded horizontal-wire and vertical-wire mode exciters for fixed station applications. The potential for significantly increasing the wireless communication range by inductively coupling to communications and power lines in a mine is evaluated and found to be considerable based on theoretical coupling equations. Lastly, the theoretical performance of a hybrid noise cancelling diversity receiving technique that utilizes both the electric and magnetic field components of the ambient noise to improve the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio under certain adverse conditions is estimated and shown to be favorable when the magnetic and electric field noise components are highly correlated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University (MTU) are collaborating to develop an apparatus for measuring diesel tailpipe emissions in underground mines. A tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) is described that dilutes diesel exhaust and measures the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 at known dilution ratios. The EMA was evaluated by side-by-side comparison of its measurements with those by laboratory-grade instruments. Concentrations of CO and CO2 measured by the EMA were usually within ± 14 pct of concentrations measured by laboratory-grade instruments for CO and ±20 pct for CO2. EMA¬ measured DPM concentrations were, on average, 29 pct lower than those measured by laboratory-grade instruments, with the differences being fairly consistent. The CO and CO2 differences are related to the method of calculating the EMA's dilution ratio, and the difference in DPM concentrations is attributed to thermophoretic and/or condensation losses related to the EMA's unheated sample probe. Preliminary analysis of data obtained with a heated sampling probe and modifications in the sampling procedures have indicated reduced variability in DPM and in the calculated dilution ratios.

From November 1943 to April 1944, the Bureau of Mines put down 18 churn-drill holes aggregating 2,571 feet of bore in an investigation of the virtually abandoned zinc deposits of the north-central Arkansas district, principally in Marion, Boone, Searcy, and Newton Counties. The ore of this area occurs in flat-lying sedimentaries of the Mississippian and Ordovician ages. Much of the zinc is in the form of carbonate and silicate, although some sulfide has been produced. Preliminary studies resulted in selection for investigation of the Big Hurricane mine in northwest Searcy County, the Spies mine in northeast Newton County, and the Coon Hollow mine in eastern Boone County The comparatively large production of th.ese properties in the past was a factor in the selection. This report describes the work accomplished in the investigation and presents the data obtained.

The evaporation of crude oil without doubt causes one of the largest single losses to which the oil is subjected after it is taken from the ground. The few days during which crude oil is stored on the lease before being taken by the pipe line, causes an aggregate loss per year from evaporation estimated at 122,100,000 gallons of gasoline in the Mid-Continent field alone. This has a value, at 22 cents per gallon, of $26,880,000 and represents about 3 per cent of the total gasoline produced in the United States from all fields and all sources. The helium resources base of the United States was estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) to be 894.6 Bcf as of January 1, 1989. These resources are divided into four categories in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in proved natural gas reserves, 282.4 Bcf, (2) helium in probable natural gas resources, estimated at 237.7 Bcf, (3) helium in possible natural gas resources, estimated at 263.1 Bcf and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, estimated at 111.4 Bef. These helium resources are further divided into depleting and nondepleting, with the helium in storage being in a classification. The depleting resources are those associated with natural gasfields that are, or will be produced for the natural gas they contain. Almost all of the helium in potential (probable, possible and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 775 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources, i.e., those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gas fields, are estimated to total 84 Bcf There is 35 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government-owned Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. The inspections and tests are designed to insure that each equipment satisfies the minimum requirements for safety in use. The mine and crushing plant are in secs . 26 and 35 , T. 12 N. , R. 36 E. , M. D. B. & M. , northwestern Nye County , Nev . , 1 mile east of Gabbs and about 33 miles northeast of Luning , a town on the Mina branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad and U. S. Highway 95. This paper presents only the highlights of previous research on the paleobotany of coal. The accumulated material has become so vast that a comprehensive review of all findings relating to paleobotany would be far too long. The fact that coal is derived from plants is now so well-known that no further comment is required, but knowledge of the mode of transformation of plant substances into coal is not so general. The plant matter goes first through processes of semirottins-, maceration, and elimination of certain material to form peat, which is then further transformed into coal. The first stage has been termed the "biochemical process," because the more important changes take place under the influence of micro-organisms. Near the end of the biochemical action an unconsolidated peat is formed. The second or "dynamochemical process," caused by the addition of superincumbent rock strata such as sandstones and shales and application of additional pressure and possibly heat through mountain-building forces, results in the formation of higher-rank coals ranging from brown coal to anthracite. These stages in trans-formation of plant material to coal have been described in previous reports.4 The main object of this paper is to bring to the notice of paleobotanists the fact that coal contains an enormous amount of material in a remarkably good state of preservation. Although some of the coal-forming matter has lost its identity, much of the original structure is retained. A large proportion of the coal, therefore, particularly of common bright coals, comprises constituents or components that invariably have retained some of the original plant structure, and many of these structures may be assigned to certain plants. The identity of these plants and of the remains forms the subject of this paper.
