The helium resources of the United States were estimated by the Bureau of Mines to be 1,037 Bcf as of January 1, 1981. These resources are divided into four categories, in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in measured natural gas reserves, which totals 211 Bcf, (2) helium in indicated natural gas resources, which is estimated at 207 Bcf, (3) helium in hypothetical natural gas resources, which is estimated to be 318 Bcf, and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, which makes up the remaining 301 Bcf. These helium resources are further divided into depleting, nondepleting, and stored classifications, The depleting resources are those associated with natural gasfields that are, or will be, produced for the natural gas they contain. All of the helium in undiscovered (hypothetical and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 897 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Nondepleting resources are those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gasfields. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources are estimated to total 100 Bcf. There is 40 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government-owned Cliffside Gas Field near Amarillo, Tex.

For the purpose of procuring data that could be used in estimating the value of the briquetting process as applied to American fuels, the United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with other interests, began in 1904, at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, certain experiments involving the production and use of bituminous-coal briquets. It installed at St. Louis, and later at Norfolk, machines for the manufacture of such briquets, and the output of these machines has been tested in locomotive service on several different railroads in comparison with natural fuels. An elaborate and carefully executed series of tests involving the use of natural coals and of briquets made from the same coal, previously crushed, was carried out on a locomotive mounted at the testing plant of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Altoona, Pa.; and some preliminary experiments involving the use of briquets in marine service were made in connection with one of the Government's torpedo boats. A description of these tests is presented herewith. The results sustain the following general conelusions: 1. The briquets made on the Government's machines have well withstood exposure to the weather. and have suffered but little deterioration from handling. 2. In all classes of service involved by the experiments, the use of briquets in the place of natural coal appears to have increased the evaporative efficiency of the boilers tested. 3. The smoke produced has in no test been more dense with the briquets than with coal; on the contrary, in most tests the smoke density is said to have been less when briquets were used. 4. The use of briquets increases the facility with which an even fire over the whole area of the grate may be maintained.

From a scientific point of view , the zircon is by far the most remarkable of the gem stones , and a satisfactory solution of the problems offered by its characters and constitution has not yet been made . 3 Three distinct forms have been recognized , differing in specific gravity , hardness , optical properties , behavior when heated , and color.4 ( See section of this paper entitled "Description and Properties . " ) Zircon as a gem stone has not been as well known as its properties warrant . It is one of the most brilliant of the precious stones (having a high refractive index) . The colorless zircon rivals the diamond in brilliance and fire play to such an extent that a judgment based entirely upon optical inspection might be erroneous . In the opinion of gem authorities , the colored stones likewise have much merit . The blue zircon ( " Starlite" ) was so named by Kunz because of its resemblance to a " star twinkling in the night . " Another gem authority describes the leaf- green stone as one possessing a restful beauty , the red stone as having a certain ( though somber) grandeur , and the golden-yellow stone as being unsurpassed in magnificence . The slowness with which the zircon , a stone frequently mentioned in ancient literature , has come into use in modern jewelery may be owing to the fact that authorities differ as to whether the colorless and the blue zircons are found as such in nature or are treated stones . Any treated stone , although the material of which it is composed may be essentially genuine , has been considered a deception . However , according to Kunz , " Starlite is now sold over the entire world ; never has anything been so well introduced. "7 Dr. Foshag, mineral curator of the United States National Museum, states that the first allotment of zircons to enter the United States was obtained in 1921 from Siam ( through France ) for scientific or museum purposes and that four or five years later the stones were adopted by the jewelers of this country . Retail jewelers are displaying the colorless type and the blue stones , especially , in finger rings , necklaces , and like ornaments . Fine crystals have been used somewhat extensively in jewelling watches and as supports for the edges of fine balances . At one time zircons were though to be appropriate in mourning jewelery .

Smoke abatement is a subject of which fuel technology, although absolutely essential, is only a part. Its successful accomplishment starts and ends with human factors that must be given thorough consideration; between this "start" and "end" fuel technology is applied. Smoke abatement usually starts from the desire of some person or persons to be free from uncleanness caused by the stack of someone else and ends with the sincere desire of the operator of the fuel-burning equipment to maintain a clear stack. Although "smoke abatement been discussed for many years, it is only recently that the public has been mindful of such expressions as "air pollution" and "air hygiene." The subject has duel in common with that of supplying pure water but is more complicated. The public desires pure water, expects pure water, is willing to pay for pure water, and expects to continue to pay for it indefinitely; it is a development of civilization. It is doubtless correct to say, however, that people in general do not et realize the detriment of air pollution to their well-being or give the question enough serious consideration. This is illustrated by the fact that in city smoke abatement it is the mass of small householders that sins the most and is the hardest to handle. It is rather difficult to assemble a group of people in a room without the air becoming contaminated with smoke. Smoke abatement will lag with the lack of desire for pure air - probably the biggest human factor involved in its accomplishment.

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. There are two distinct coal fields in Kentucky-the Eastern field constituting a part of the Appalachian coal region and the Western field constituting the southern part of the Eastern Interior region. The outcrop pattern of the State is dominated by the Cincinnati arch. Coal-bearing Pennsylvanian strata occupy a low structural position on either flank, preserved thereby from erosion, which in the past has removed these same beds, though a much thinner succession, from the crest of the arch. General geological relationships are shown in figures 1 and 2. On April 13, 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker discovered the first coal recorded in Kentucky. He entered the State through Cumberland Gap (Cave Gap) and found coal a few miles north.

The Bureau of Mines is concerned with extracting minerals from residual geothermal brines after their heat content and some demineralized water have been recovered. This literature study is based on a survey of the literature and discussions with individuals knowledgeable on various aspects of the subject. This report examines the potential of the domestic geothermal mineral resources, considers the technical problems involved, and outlines possible effects on the environment from reservoir fluid withdrawal and reinjection. Geothermal resources in the Western United States were extensively explored during the 1960&apos;s. Limited development operations included exploratory drilling and operating wells producing hot brine, separating steam for experimental electric power generation, and recovering minerals in solar evaporation ponds or in extraction plants. Interest in the recovery of minerals and salts from geothermal fluids waned because of corrosion and scaling problems and low or no market value of the mineral products. Most of these problems can be controlled with existing technology and careful planning of processes and equipment. Extracting geothermal minerals is technically feasible, but the problems of low or no market value for major mineral products, and insufficient amounts of more valuably major products, make mineral recovery uneconomical at present.

.1. The purification pilot plant and the equipment, solution, and gas cycle used for removing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are described. 2. As sulfur recovery is necessary in any large Fischer-Tropsch plant, pilot-plant runs were made at 300 p.s.i.g. to study the efficiency of tri-ethanolamine solutions in removing selectively hydrogen sulfide from gases containing varying amounts of carbon dioxide. 3. Aqueous solutions of TEA of 20, 30; 35, and 50 percent were investi¬gated. Data indicate that 30 to 35 percent is the optimum concentration if both selectivity and economy are considered. Slightly better selectivity is obtained with the.20 percent solution, but steam consumption is greater owing to the higher solution rates. Results from our pilot plant runs indicate that a 50 percent solution not only produces an acid gas of lower hydrogen sulfide content but also requires high solution rates to effect hydrogen sulfide purification. 4. Data from 37 runs using TEA are presented in tabular form. In addition, the data are correlated and presented in three sets of curves. By using these curves, it is possible to calculate the compositions of the purified and acid gases for various raw gas mixtures. 5. In cooperation with the Southern Natural Gas Co., investigations were carried out at 300 p.s.i.g. on the simultaneous removal of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, from gases using various concentrations of diethanolamine. 6. Data from 17 runs employing 20, 30, and 40 percent DEA are reported in both tabular and graphic form. 7. A comparison of the data from one DEA run made at 200 p.s.i.g. with those from the runs operating at 30O p.s.i.g. shows float the absorption capacity of the solution, and, hence, the steam requirements per gallon are about the sage for both pressures. .The only real advantage of the higher pressure is the additional volume of gas that can be treated. 8. The quantity of steam needed to reactivate fouled TEA and DEA solutions increased as the reactivator pressure was increased about 1,0 to 1.1 pounds of steam was required for each gallon of circulating solution when the reactivator was operated at 5 p.s.i.g. 9. A curve is included that shows the effect of the hydrogen sulfide con-centration in a lean 35 percent TEA solution on the hydrogen sulfide content of the purified gas and on steam consumption for reactivation. 10. Both TEA and DEA reduced the organic sulfur content of the raw synthesis gas considerably. Analyses of the lean amine solutions showed a gradual build up of sulfur compounds, indicating that the compounds formed by the amines and organic sulfur do not break down under the ordinary operating conditions of the reactivator. 11. Considerable operating difficulty was encountered in the pilot plant owing to foaming of the amine solutions. Laboratory experiments in which the effectiveness of certain antifoam agents was studied showed Alkaterge C to be most promising for the particular conditions studied.

This regional report covers 1993 mining and related activity in approximately 40 countries and territories of Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. These countries of the Western Hemisphere, as with the United States, are endowed with a great variety of minerals, including metals, industrial minerals, and energy minerals. For most of these countries, such mineral production helps form foundations for their economies and earns export credits including hard currencies. Table 1 depicts an overall view of Latin America and Canada&apos;s production of its major mineral commodities in 1993; subsequent tables show the role of Latin America and Canada in world mineral production, trade, and import dependency on minerals from Latin America and Canada by the United States. Overall, the picture emerges of a rich mineral diversity throughout the hemisphere, attracting increasing interest and investment, and complementing the mineral resources of the United States.

Research performed on computer modeling of mine power systems under USBM Grant G0155003 1S described. The work was performed at the Pennsylvania State University from 5 November 1975 through 4 November 1976. Results presented are interim in nature, and future research is planned to integrate the simulations which have been developed. The thrust of this research has been divided into three main areas. 1. Modification of a previously developed model (Mine Power System Simulation or MPSS) to include interactive operation and the use of default (average) load data. 2. Development of a dynamic simulation of interdependent mine power system induction motors. 3. Development of an approach to modeling of motor shaft loading of induction machines for mining operations. During the course of the current year&apos;s research, significant results have been achieved in all areas. Construction of an interactive MPSS model has been completed and checked. This simulation was written in APL code and is fully interactive. In addition, default data representing 158 different pieces of mining equipment has been developed for use with the interactive model. Additional work described includes the construction of a dynamic simulation of interdependent continuous miner induction motors and the development of an approach fo: motor shaft load torque computation from experimental data.

This report, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the Blind Shaft Borer (BSB) shaft sinking system and an alternative modified BSB design concept in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the two systems was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the BSB systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the component operations of the two BSB systems was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that both BSB systems are safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by over 30%, on the average, with the use of the original BSB system, and by an average of about 10% with the modified BSB. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of these systems include better fire suppression systems, improved man haulage systems and more compact hydraulics. An operational safety manual was also developed for the modified BSB system.

The value of Alabama&apos;s nonfuel mineral production in 1987 was $446.6 million, an increase over that of 1986 and the first increase in 3 years. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite and ferroalloys; third in bentonite, crushed dolomite, crushed marble, and fire clay; and fourth in masonry cement. Trends and Developments.-Employment in the minerals industry remained relatively low for the second year even though the overall unemployment rate dropped to 7.9% by December. Employment in mining and primary metals dropped about 10% and 2%, respectively.

This report presents a structural-mesh-generating computer program for the two-dimensional finite-clement method of mine structural analysis of single and multiple openings in nonhomogeneous rock mass. This program greatly reduces the amount of input data required and the chances of error which otherwise are large owing to the large amounts of data and the complex mesh involved. The program description, a user&apos;s guide, example problems, and program listing are included.

The names of the sections indicate broadly the fields covered by each, and in the following pages the objectives and type of work of each section will be summarized briefly and the active problems listed. The work done during the calendar year 1936 will also be summarized.

"The aggressive industrialization of America, the development of powered tools which generated massive amounts of respirable-sized dust particles, a latency period which may mask the relationship between exposure and development of disease, inadequate (or perhaps even careless) understanding of the relationship between dust exposure and disease, and respiratory protection which has later proven to be inadequate have resulted in a series of epidemics of silicosis which have caused the premature death of many workers.1-11 Emphasis on the regulatory control of dust levels in the workplace has greatly reduced the development of pneumoconiosis in the United States and in other developed as well as underdeveloped countries, yet the prevention of silicosis or coal workers' pneumoconiosis has not come close to being accomplished. Despite the public health perspective that pneumoconiosis arc totally preventable illnesses, there appears to be little evidence that this is the case.Cases of pneumoconiosis continue despite aggressive enforcement policies by regulatory agencies, attempts at dissemination of very readable materials aimed at workers and management 12.13 and respiratory dust exposure standards which are in place and appear, for the most part, protectivc.14- 16 It is more than frustrating for all parties associated with advocating workers' health to see reports of workers with aggressive silicosis. On another level, both the physician and the affected worker are helpless when a diagnosis of silicosis or coal workers' pneumoconiosis is made. Both realize that there is no proven way to affect the natural history of these progressive inflammatory and fibrotic processes. Neither is there any ""compassionate use"" therapy. What must be developed, at the very least, is a ""salvage therapy"" which has the potential to reverse, or at least dramatically lessen, the aggressive natural history of silicosis which develops over relatively short time periods. Because of the aggressive nature of silicosis (compared to coal workers' pneumoconiosis) attempting to develop a therapy for this illness should be a priority."

[Utilization of small stone is recognized as one of the important problems of the lime industry. The term ?small stone&apos; is used to designate material that is too small for calcination in tie shaft kilo. The maximum dimension A such stone rosy be placed at four inches. The introduction of any considerable quantity of stone having demensions lee: than this into the charge of a kiln impedes the draft and readers successful operation of the kiln difficult on impossible. Attempts design a shaft kiln which would calcine stall stone satisfactorily have not been successful to date. Thousands of tons of this small stone arc produced daily, and while part of it finds a market, for it has many uses, the profit is usually small an competition is teen and prices are low. Production of the material is, however, so greatly in excess of market that surplus of hundreds or possibly thousands of Jose axe place daily in stock piles and classified as waste. in a few instances a fortunate combination of circumstances, such as a program of or other work requiring large quantities of concrete aggregate, may mate it possible some quarries to market this stone later at a profit, teat in general the chances A profitable utilization are slight, and the quarry operator has the expense of handling this waste stone and providing a storage site for it. The brittle nature of limestone makes it impossible to quarry the stone and crush, it to size suitable for the shaft kilns without producing an excess of undesirable fines. Elimination of fines by changes in quarrying or crushing practices cannot lee expected. On the contrary, the adoption of more modern methods of quarrying in recent years has increased the proportion of small material. The tendency is to blast the roan with large charges of explosives and crush it with mechanical crushers, which produces more fines than the older methods of careful blasting with small char yes and sledging the rock by hand.. We increasing use of underground mining of limestone has also increased the production of small stone, as blasting in the confined space of an underground stope shatters the rocs more completely than quarrying in the open. The use of the very friable limestones, such as the limestone of Florida for the manufacture of lime adds a new factor to the calcination of small stone. "INTRODUCTION Pilot-plant studies on processes for converting low-grade domestic manganese ore to high-grade oxide or sulfide products by pyrometailurgical process was initiated at the Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station in 1942. These investigations were given impetus by the possibility of a national shortage of ferro-grade manganese oxide for war needs.The manganese ore employed-in most of the pilot-plant smelting tests was from the manganosiderite-nodule deposits at Chamberlain, S. Dak. This deposit although low-grade, is extensive and represents, the largest reserve of manganese in continental United States. 6/ The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a Carryall mining-conical rolls treatment method that shows promise of making possible economic removal and subsequent beneficiation of the nodule-bearing shales. 7/ Smelting tests were made also on Artillery Peak, Ariz., mill concentrates in the productions of unrefined manganese matte for the steel The pilot-plant smelting program was based upon the fundamental fact that manganese, like copper, will sulfidize and become miscible with FeS. The matte this formed represents the initial smelting step in the pyrometallurgical treatment of the beneficiated ore. The concentrated nodules containing about. 18 percent manganese were smelted with varying amounts of pyrites and appropriate fluxes to produce Mns-FeS mattes containing 16 to 50 percent manganese. When the manganese and iron was completely sulfidized, the mattes contained 16 to 23 percent manganese. Reducing the pyrite resulted, of course, in the selective sulfidization of manganese and the production of a matte containing a correspondingly higher ratio of MnS to FeS. Complete sulfidization smelting produced slags of lower manganese content and hence resulted in higher manganese recoveries in the matte."
