A mineral resource survey of the 236-mil (611-km2) Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn wilderness study area (RARE 11 Areas No. 1-155 G, Gallatin Divide; and H, Hyalite) between the Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers in Montana, indicates there are phosphate rock and petrified wood resources (fig. 1). The area also has some potential for oil, gas, and geothermal resources. Stone and alluvium are abundant but appear to have little potential for development because other sources are available nearer to markets.

This report presents a complete qualitative picture of knowledge of the composition of petroleum as of April 1965. The material is presented in detai 1 on two imaginative maps--one, the Hydrocarbon Hemisphere, depicts the hydrocarbons that have been identified in petroleum; the other, the Heterogeneous Hemisphere, shows the sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds that have been found. All compounds are placed on the maps according to boiling point. The accompanying text illustrates by structural formulas the several types of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon compounds identified, presents some quantitative data, and points out the possible geochemical significance of a number of the compounds. The possibilities of the Petroleum World of the future are discussed as a function of needed research.

The vibration and impact environment for crew members on locomotives has been investigated in a series of studies conducted by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) beginning in 1990. Locomotive cab vibration and impact levels were measured on a variety of locomotive models operating over many different track sections across the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and CONRAIL systems. The comfort and health implications of exposure to the measured locomotive vibration levels were evaluated by comparison with the human vibration exposure boundaries given in the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 2631-1:1997, the British Standard 6841:1987, European Union (EU) Directive 2002/44/EC, measurements made by Exponent on various commercial and recreational vehicles, and vibration exposure measurement data found in the literature. Methods Initially, vibration levels experienced by locomotive crews were measured and recorded at incremental speeds covering the range of normal train operation. In 2003, a method of measuring the vibration exposure continuously by means of a digital recorder was developed, allowing the vibration level over the entire run or crew shift to be analyzed. For each seating location measured, acceleration was recorded on the seat surface beneath the ischial tuberosities (pelvis) of the seated crew member and on the cab floor directly under the seat. At each of the locations, triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the vibration along the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes. Since the vibration environment varies throughout the route, and locomotive vibration levels have been found to be primarily speed dependent, a speed sensor was used to continuously measure the speed of the train. To evaluate the recorded vibrations levels, the data was divided into two-minute segments, which were each processed per the 1997 ISO standard for weighted RMS vibration levels and Vibration Dose Values (VDV). Additionally, PSDs and 1/3 Octave RMS values were calculated to determine the frequency content of the vibration. For each two-minute segment, the average speed of the locomotive was calculated to allow for correlation with the recorded vibration exposure values. The resulting exposure values for the entire run were calculated by combining the data from all of the two-minute segments. Since introducing the continuous method of recording acceleration, 23 seating locations have been recorded on 11 locomotives traveling 11 different routes across various parts of the United States. One of the routes was a shift of ‘yard work’, traveling back and forth in a rail yard coupling train cars together. This report has been prepared by Lockheed Missiles & Space Company, Inc. (LMSC), under United States Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0220040 dated 21 June 1972 for the design, development, fabrication, and certification of the One-Hour Self-Rescue Breathing Apparatus (PBA). The PBA is a self-contained, oxygen-generating, CO2-removing closed-loop breathing apparatus that provides a minimum of 1 hour of breathable atmosphere during escape from a mine with a contaminated or oxygen-deficient atmosphere. This Cost-Plus-Fixed-Fee (CPFF) contract has been successfully completed in a three-phase program. The Phase I tasks included the design, development, and fabrication of prototype units developed at LMSC in accordance with the requirement of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 30, Chapter 1, Subchapter B, Part 11 (Appendix A), and was submitted to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for joint NIOSH and Bureau of Mines certification testing.

The expansion of city street laving which characterized the ten years ended December 31, 1929, according to a survey of 201 representative cities, made by the bureau of Mines, reached it climax in 1927, with decreases reported for 1928 and 1929. The upward trend, followed by a decline, was general in cities of all sizes included in this study, but was most pronounced in cities of 40,000 to 100,600 inhabitant and in the Northeastern, Southeastern, and Southwestern States. In the North-Central States the trend of paving; was downward from 1925 to 1929; in the Pacific, and Rocky Mountain States it was generally upward. Over the nation as a whole, bituminous types of paving continued to lead, furnishing two-thirds of the total street pavement laid in the 201 cities from 1925 to 1929. The actual yardage of bituminous pavement laid in these cities, however, was 3.8 per cent less in 1923-than in 1925, and the ratio of bituminous pavement to the total pavement t dropped from 70.4 per cent in 1925 to 62.1 per cent in 1928, rising to 65.1 per cent in 1929. The area paved with Portland-cement concrete amounted to only one-fourth of the total, pavement laid in these cities from 1925. to 1923., but the yardage of Portland-cement pavement increased by half during the period, and its share in the total pavement grew from 19.3 per cent in 1925 to 30.0 per cent in 1928, declining to 29.5 per cent in 1929. Brick, block, and stone pavements, which constituted the remaining one-twelfth of the total pavement laid in the 201 cities, decreased one-third in yardage, and declined in relative importance from 10.3 per cent in 1925 to 6.6 per cent in 1929.

In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 8,500 acres of the 20,250-acre Seven Blackfoot Wilderness Study Area (WSA) consisting of all 3,950 acres of MT-024-657A and 4,550 acres of the 4,850 acre MT-024-657B in order to evaluate the mineral resources. Within this report these 8,500 acres are referred to as the study area. Located about 30 miles northwest of Jordan, MT, the study area is underlain by outcrops of Quaternary alluvium and Cretaceous to Paleocene sandstones, shales, clays, and coal. No mines or prospects were found in the study area. Except for some current interest in petroleum and natural gas, there has been no mineral exploration activity in the study area. The study area contains subeconomic clay, placer gold, and coal. Land within the study area is leased or under lease application for oil and gas.

One criterion central to most definitions of reclamation is the restoration of mined lands to their original productive potential. This is often difficult to achieve on mined lands in the Northern Great Plains because of the rigorous climate (Bares 19;2) and various soil related problems including sodicity, salinity, soil permeability, low organic matter and plant nutrient deficiencies (Malakondaiah and Safaya 1982). Field study sites were established on recontotured mined areas during the early 1970's (prior to the topsoil mandate) in which several amendments were tested for their ability to improve spoil/topsoil conditions and, hence, increase plant production. Physical and chemical properties of these control (untreated) and amended spoils and topsoils have been summarized (Safaya et al. 1982). A number of grass and legume species combinations were studied. The general effects of one time (prior to seeding), single rate (approximately 100 mT ha-1) application of leonardite and/or slack coal to spoils and topsoils was the reduction of grass dry matter yields (NB 1 test site: dry matter yield (DMY) without slack was 110 g m 2 yr I ; DMY with slack was 80 g m -2 yr 1 I and the promotion of legume establishment and yield (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 13 g m 2 yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 93 g m 2 yr 1). On South Beulah topsoil, treated with leonardite, production of weedy species was remarkably lower than that without leonardite (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 252 g m - yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 177 g m 2 yr 1). The general effect of commercial fertilizer applied one time prior to seeding (rates ranging from 9-13-0 to 44-1 12-28 kg ha-1 of N-P-K) was to increase plant production during the first two to three years after which the effect disappeared. This effect was much more pronounced on spoils (NB I test site: DMY on spoils without fertilizer was 53 g m -2 yr -1; DMY on spoils with fertiliser was 132 gm -2 yr -1). Weedy species accounted for most of the biomas, production during the first growing season. Three of the test sites were designed to study plant production on topsoils and spoils. Establishment and production of grass species were comparatively better on topsoils (30 cm in depth) than on spoils while legumes were most successful on the soils (Center test site, 1979; DMY of grasses on topsoil was 170 g m 2 yr -1 DMY of grasses on spoils was 52 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on topsoil was 20 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on spoil was 191 g m 2 yr -1). Total plant production on topsoiled (302 m thickness) plots at the South Beulah site (DMY in 1979 of 269 g m 2 yr 1) was comparable to that of native western wheatgrass prairie (DMY of 262 g m -2 yr -1). An experiment was conducted to find out if time of planting would have any effect on establishment of grasses on spoils. It was fund that late fall seeding was superior to spring planting for establishment of wheatgrasses at NB 3 test site (Control Plot, 1975: DMY on spring-seeded was 1 g m -2 yr - 1; DMY on fall-seeded was 55 g m -2 yr -1). In general, wheatgrasses (slender, streambank, thickspike and western) yielded the most aboveground biomass of all the grass species tested; yellow sweetclover was the most successful legume. Yellow sweetclover established and was productive on both spoils and topsoils but only where competition with grasses was apparently minimal. Durar hard fescue established and thrived on topsoil but dry matter production was low compared to that of wheatgrasses. Emerald crown-vetch demonstrated a potential for growth on spoils where water conditions were adequate, whereas side-oats grama, prairie sand-reed, alkali sacaton, and bird's -foot trefoil demonstrated only sporadic success. Little bluestem did not become established at any of the test sites. Peak production of the planted species, especially grasses, was generally reached by the second week of July. Legume and weed production continued to increase into late August.

This report presents the results of a search for viable-self-drilling roof bolt concepts, detailed development, design, and manufacture of such bolts that drill their own holes, and testing in the laboratory and in the field in two different coal mines of three self-drilling roof bolts. Three new types of bolts were designed and tested, which drill their own holes and then anchor in continuous operation. These were a spring-actuated mechanical expansion shell, a slot and wedge, and a self-contained resin anchor bolt. Such bolts when fully developed for mine use would allow safer and remote installation of ground support and increase productivity. Recommendations are given for further work to improve drilling and anchorage performance.

This report is volume 3 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation,' and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Methane Generator subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem is used to determine methane emission rates into the mine environment. These flow rates are then used by the simulator in planning primary and secondary ventilation systems, planning a methane drainage system, and analyzing complex ventilation networks. Both steady state and unsteady state gas flows are included, and have been modeled as second order nonlinear partial differential equations. Finite difference equations are used to obtain numerical solutions to the models using a central differencing scheme. An application of the model is presented. The appendices include derivation of the gas flow equations used in the model as well as a users manual for the computer program.

The results of tests to determine the .regional applicability of four synthetic unit hydrograph models are presented. The SCS curvilinear (Haan), SCS single triangle, Williams and TVA double triangle unit hydrograph models were tested on 271 events from 38 USDA experimental watersheds in 14 physiographic provinces. Though inconclusive due to the limited number of events analyzed, the results indicated a regional tendency for each model, with the SCS curvilinear unit hydrograph method generally performing best overall. It outperformed the SCS single triangle by predicting better shape; they differed less than 2 percent in time of peak and peak rate predictions. The Williams model performed well at Oxford, Mississippi and Coshocton, Ohio, which suggests it may be applicable to surface mined lands within the Northern and Central Appalachian Plateau and Texas coal producing regions. The TVA model is applicable to the Appalachian Plateau, specifically the Cumberland Plateau. A second test using only the SCS curvilinear unit hydrograph on 11 small watersheds and 50 events was conducted to investigate the effect of the excesss rainfall pattern on simulation results. A Green and Ampt infiltration model was coupled with the SCS unit hydrograph model to determine if peak rate and timing errors noted in the regional test could be minimized with an alternate to the SCS curve number model for determining infiltration losses. The results confirm the curve number model is the better approach to determining the excess rainfall pattern for unit hydrograph simulation.

Foster-Miller Associates has developed a set of guidelines to permit hoist manufacturers, mine owners, and MESA mine inspectors to design, purchase, install or inspect a safe and effective Emergency Escape Hoist, as required by the Coal Mine Health and Safety act of 1969. A series of surveys were carried out to determine: 1. The attitudes and local needs of the MESA District Managers. 2. Current escape hoist installations. 3. Equipment available for future designs. 4. Foreign methods and equipment for mine rescue. From these survey studies, preliminary guideline objectives were developed.

This report documents the three-phase program to design, fabricate, test, and demonstrate economical and practical methods of reducing noise levels on underground coal mining portal buses (mantrip vehicles). The noise-control treatments applied to a production-model portal bus were as follows: ? Wheel/rail vibrations were isolated from the vehicle frame by inserting elastomeric materials between suspension components. ? Vibration-induced noise was reduced by replacing all large sheet metal panels (except floor plates) with damped steel panels. ? Motor noise was reduced by tight-fitting covers made from damped steel and lined with sound-absorbing material, and by elastomeric motor mounts. ? The standard spur gears used in the traction drive system were replaced with helical gearsets. The program achieved the goal of reducing the average sound-level to below 85 dBA for typical operating conditions.

This publication describes methods and techniques of mining and crushing limestone at 3 of 11 small quarries operated by Anderson-Oxandale Rock Co. in northeast Kansas in 1959. It is one of a series of reports by the Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining in various mining districts in the United States. The three quarries selected for study -Bosse quarry, Pottawatomie County; Hansen quarry, Morris County; and Huston quarry, Dickinson County (fig. 1) -were in many respects similar to many others that had been developed solely to fill local and usually transitory demands for crushed limestone for use as concrete aggregate, roadstone, and soil conditioning. Factors governing the choice of quarry sites were quality of limestone, shallow overburden, and proximity to points of consumption of the crushed stone.

This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. The Bureau of Mines gas been studying the blast furnace for a number of years and has published detailed reports on various phases of its investigations. Inquiries frequently received for information of a more general character than that given in the detailed reports have promoted the preparation of an information circular to cover in a general way the important features of the Bureau of Mines blast-furnace investigations. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS OF FURNACE The modern blast furnace approximate a refractory-lined steel cylinder about 90 feet in height and 25 feet in diameter. It actually consists of a number of cylinders and truncated cones superimposed upon each other. The shape and dimensions of a modern furnace are shown in figure 1. The bottom section, commonly referred to as the hearth or crucible, is a cylindrical section about 12 feet high. Liquid metal and slag collect in this part of the furnace and are withdrawn at regular intervals; iron is removed at a level about 2 feet above the bottom of the furnace and slag at a level about 5 feet higher. Depending upon on the size of tie furnace, 40,000 to 75,000 cubic feet of preheated air per minute is introduced through from 10 to 16 tuyeres equally spaced around the periphery of the hearth.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

In the Coastal Plain sedimentaries of northeastern Mississippi, high-alumina clays and kaolins, which are bauxitized locally to varying degrees, are found in many places along the contact between the Midway (Paleocene) and the Wilcox (Eocene) series. The trace of the contact extends from Tippah County, on the Tennessee border, south to Winston County, thence southeast to Lauderdale County, and into Alabama. Its length within Mississippi, disregarding sinuosities, is 185 miles (fig. 1). Commercial production of bauxite from the region has amounted to about 400 tons, shipped from one outcrop in Komper County. In December 1941 and January 1942, the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey of the contact zone and selected the most promising areas for further study. In 1942, four areas in Benton, Union, and Pontotoc Counties were investigated by auger and rotary core drilling, and in 194, core drilling was done on five areas in Kemper, Noxubee, and Winston Counties. The present report records the work done by the. Bureau of Mines and the factual data obtained from the investigations of the nine areas in the two projects.
