In the article results of experiments over jaws? linings in jaw crushers with different shaping of working surface were presented. Following sets of jaws were under investigation: immobile plain jaw and moving jaw with grooving surface. Grooving jaws have groves with circular, triangular and trapezoid cross section. In order to evaluate efficiency of comminution both the grain composition of product and the content of irregular grains were determined, as well as the size of crushing forces and process efficiency were measured. For the combination: plain jaw with grooved one, a good results were obtained as regards the grain composition of product and the content of irregular grains. Crushing forces were higher at crushing with mixed types of jaws (the one plain, the second grooved), in comparison to crushing with using both grooved jaws. Efficiency of the process was definitely higher for mixed jaws.

Most of the coal reserves in India are of drift origin and have very poor washability characteristics and a high level of near gravity materials. At least 30 new coal wash plants are expected to be set up in the next 5years.In such a scenario, adequate sampling followed by sink float test work for washability analysis becomes very critical for designing these new plants. For coal sampling purpose, stipulations of different standards are sometimes formidable and on the border of ?impracticality?; sometimes are self contradictory in terms of gross sample weight vis-a-vis minimum number of particles required in each size fraction and in each relative density fraction and also the minimum mass in the latter. Validation of the generated data is another important aspect of washability analysis. These issues can easily be addressed by using straight forward mathematical relationships, well known RR plots and by using simple MS Excel tool, etc.

In composite washeries optimization of operating parameters to achieve maximum clean coal yield at the desired clean coal ash level is a major problem. This problem is more acute in countries like India, which have predominant reserves of difficult-to-wash coals. The constrained operational parameters of washing for some equipments make it more severe. In addition to this, the dependence of separating performance of different equipments upon various variables aggravates the situation. Here an attempt is made to find a numerical solution to get maximum yield and minimize the difference between the actual and the theoretical yield. The solution is arrived through constrained non-linear optimization of a multivariable objective function that utilizes spreadsheet tools; the method accommodates any number of source coals or washing size fractions. By using a designed Ep value the predicted yield of composite clean coal has been calculated and the yield is optimized subject to constraints on both the ash and specific gravity. It is shown that operational constraints of different washeries in the composite plant that utilizes gravity separation methods can also be over-come. The technique offers the coal preparation engineer an effective and straightforward method for determining the optimum cut-points of separation for different coals or blended coals to obtain maximum product yield at a specified level of ash content.

This paper presents BF flotation machines in brief which are manufactured by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (BGRIMM). Dimensional analysis and similarity criteria have been used to scale up BF flotation machines. These scale-up criteria can be used to determine mechanical structure and hydrodynamic parameters including mixing, solids suspension, air transfer and power and so on. Similarity criteria are used to design 40m3 flotation machine being based on data from 1.2 m3 to 20 m3 flotation machines. Hydrodynamic tests of 40 m3 flotation machine in water are discussed.

Handling of municipal solid waste (MSW) and control of its potential resources is becoming increasingly important in modern society. The OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) average on municipal waste produced in 2003 was that of around 570 kg per inhabitant. In European Union countries around half amount is of MSW landfilled. In Finland still 88% of MSW was landfilled in 2004. Since incineration reduces MSW volume significantly while producing heat energy, it has become one of the most common waste handling techniques. The shortcoming of incineration is however, that incinerated MSW is often not pre-sorted and it produces slags and ashes as side streams from which recovery of metals is difficult. This paper looks into possibilities of scrap metal recovery for recycling from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. In order to do that, a flow sheet of physical separation methods was developed and tested with Finnish rotary furnace MSWI bottom ash. In addition, an empirical model for estimation of the recoveries of scrap metals with physical separation methods for treatment of MSWI bottom ash was developed. According to the results of this study, for 1 Mt of incinerated MSW with 30% mass reduction, a minimum resource potential of 100 kt for magnetic metal scrap of roughly 24 % grade and about 19 kt of non-magnetic metal scrap of roughly 65 % grade. In other words, 57 kg magnetic scrap and 12 kg non-magnetic scrap per inhabitant at the mentioned grades, respectively. Although wide variations of parameters affect the MSWI bottom ash quality, it can be said that a considerable amount of metals is drained into MSWI bottom ash. Results of this study show that from MSWI bottom ash significant material streams metal scrap can be reintroduced into the resource cycle which would otherwise be lost.

In 1951, Tata Steel became the pioneer in Asia by setting up its first ever washery in West Bokaro Colliery. The first beneficiation plant used to produce clean coal of 19% ash with chance cone. Feed size of chance washers were -75 mm to +6 mm. The fine coal (-6 mm) were used directly. With change in technology,in 1986,chance cones were replaced by DM cyclones and coal was washed in two circuits. In the coarse circuit -13 mm to +0.5 mm coal was washed in two stages while the fine coal of -0.5 mm was treated in froth floatation cell. With further improvement in the process the higher ash raw coal was feed to produce clean coal of 13% ash. In 1998, DSM cyclones were replaced by scrolled Evolute design cyclone which has Ep of 0.020 to 0.025 ranges resulting in increase efficiency of separation. With the increase in demand of clean coal, lower seam proportion has increased in raw coal production. The washability studies of individual seams indicated large difference in the seam characteristics in terms of washability and specific gravity cut points of the individual seams. So washing all seams together had resulted in frequent change in the character of coal and warrants frequent changes in the operating parameters of the plant in which the separating efficiency comes down and ultimately resulted in yield loss initially. With increase in knowledge and experience in coal washing the solution to this problem was achieved by adopting, seam-wise washing which is enabling process engineers by keeping set point for longer periods there by to enhance the separation efficiency. The kaolin losses in hydrocyclone classification are determined by the fines, which are discharged together with the water to the underflow. This paper presents an improved technique of water injection to the conical part of the cyclone applied especially for small cyclones in kaolin preparation. In small hydrocyclones water, injection is a sensitive process. Therefore, the process was stabilized by controlled water injection dependent on the measurement of the underflow shape. Three applications of this innovation are presented. In the first case, the water injection is applied for the separation stage in dilute suspension where the final product is produced in the overflow of a 50mm hydrocyclone. The underflow contains sand and residual kaolin. For a higher kaolin recovery, the underflow is usually treated downstream in washing cyclones. The wash water injection results in a 45 ? 50% - reduction of the kaolin fraction <25µm in the underflow. Thus, water injection to the classifying cyclone leads to a separation comparable with a downstream washing stage. An additional hydrocyclone stage can be deleted. The second application refers to a classification in dense suspension. Here, the underflow of the last hydrocyclone stage was directed to a washing in a 50mm hydrocyclone. The additional injection of 3L/min water in to the conical part of the cyclone reduced the kaolin losses by half.The third application was executed in the washing stage equipped with 75mm hydrocyclones where the underflow is directed to flotation. Sillimanite, chemically named Aluminum silicate, 3Al2O3SiO2 is one of the three forms of alumino silicate polymorphs and commonly encountered in aluminous metamorphic, plutonic, and volcanic rocks and their weathering products. Most of the sillimanite deposits are granular and are of high grade available in coastal areas as associated mineral along with Titanium bearing minerals namely ilmenite, rutile etc. Sillimanite is one of the widely accepted raw materials for the manufacture of high alumina refractories (55-60 % alumina) or bricks. Sillimanite based refractory bricks are used for the lining of Blast furnaces, Arc furnaces, Soaking pits, Reheating furnaces of iron and steel, rotary kilns for cement manufacturing and general kilns for lime production. Considering the vast potential of unexploited sillimanite reserves in India, M/s Trimex Sands Pvt. Ltd., (TSPL)has set up a Mineral Sand Processing plant in 2010 at Andhra Pradesh with a capacity to produce about 50,000 tons of sillimanite per annum besides the production of various heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon and garnet. Traditionally in India, sillimanite is upgraded by froth flotation technique using Oleic acid as a collector cum frother, sodium silicate as depressant and soda ash as pH regulator. At TSPL, Conventional mechanical float cells are installed to float sillimanite. In addition to the usual problems associated with conventional cells, poor flow ability of the sillimanite concentrate is experienced in dry circuit due to the presence of sodium oleate. Fine garnet in the sillimanite concentrate contributes to high iron content in the final product, making sillimanite separation a nightmare for operators (lower recoveries coupled with inferior grades). Various efforts were made to improve the performance of the circuit such as introduction of additional frother like MIBC, optimizing the operating parameters such as pulp density, collector dosage, depressant dosage, air flow rate, pH etc., use of collector aids, stage wise addition of reagents etc. The challenges faced to produce a sillimanite product with stringent quality norms and the efforts made to improve the grade and recovery are described in this paper. Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. Studies of the dense medium and classifying cyclone have been conducted using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics code. Experimental measurements of the segregation of medium in a DM cyclone by gamma-ray tomography and the performance of a novel classifying cyclone design have been used to test and interpret the 3D CFD predictions. The predictions of the CFD models were generally plausible, though more work is required to incorporate turbulent mixing of the slurry in the cyclone. The benefits of the novel cyclone design were explained by the model in terms of conditions favouring reduction of short-circuiting at the vortex finder, and the removal of the air core from the wall at the apex. Work is continuing.

The Lake Balaton is the biggest and for many reasons the most important lake in Hungary. To preserve its healthy nature it is necessary to remove the accumulated mud time to time, similarly to the many living waters, lakes and rivers everywhere. Typical existing technologies (mechanical, hydraulic) require large depositional areas, where the removed slurry and mud is dewatered through very long time. One problem is the non existence of an economical mud thickening technology. Another major problem is that current methods remove the sand fraction with the mud as well. Many times sand has to be complemented from outer sources to endanger the natural balance of the living water. By the financial support of the NKFP 3A/068/2004 Hungarian Research Project our consortium has been looking for the solution to the above mentioned problems. The original ideas of the project were: 1. Sand should be separated and returned to the water by hydrocyclon; 2. New mud thickener should be developed based on the principle that vibrating rods can force settling and packing of mud particles. The work was started by fundamental research with different samples from Lake Balaton and River Bodrog. An automated settling column (45L) has been built for the investigation of the effect of vibrating rods on the settling behavior of suspensions. An optical sensor has been developed by with the settling curve (height of settling slurry as function of time) can be automatically measured. Different vibrating methods and parameters have been tested by the application of a linear motor and mechanical eccentric drive. On the basis of the fundamental research a new thickener, called the rod ? lamella thickener has been developed and an industrial size (50m3/h) mud removing technology has been built. Main parts of the technology are the traditional dredging barge and the thickening technology. The thickening and sand separation technology is tugged by the dredging ship. Its main elements are the homogenization tank, slurry pump, hydrocyclon and the rod ? lamella thickener. In this unit lamellas carry out pre-thickening, then vibrating rods further increase the concentration. The thickened mud is transported out by a screw - of which revolution number is precisely controlled - against a spring supported valve. Paper reports about the design, building, water probe and on-site tests of this mud removing technology. Two new patents had been presented, one is about the rod ? lamella thickener and the other is about the mud removing technology with sand separation.

Arsenic bearing copper-gold ores deposit have been found in most areas of China, especially in southwest. Due to the very closed association between arsenic, copper and gold, conventional flotation and cyanide leaching process may not give positive results. An arsenic bearing copper-gold ore in Sichuan province ,with gold grade of 10.12 g/t, 0.6% Cu and 0.14% As, is characterized by superfine grains with -40 microns fraction accounting for 70.9% and the gold enwrapped mainly by pyrite and tennanite accounts for 34.31%. Arsenic in this ore occurs in isomorphism, deposited in tetrahedrite. The ore was processed primarily in two stage flotation to get copper bearing gold concentrate and pyrite bearing gold concentrate respectively, and sequentially processed by leaching. Under the pressure of 300 KPa and 110~115 ?, the copper-gold concentrate was leached by an oxidizing and catalyzing leach agent then copper and gold were separated from each other in leach solution. The pyrite bearing gold concentrate was processed by cyanide leaching with the leach residue as sulfur product. The test results showed that copper recovery was up to 88.89%, gold recovery up to 89.18% and sulfur recovery up to 92.64%.

This work is based on surface chemical properties of bacteria during adaptation to high grade copper minerals and the projected consequences in Bio-Flotation process. The utility of bio-processing in the beneficiation of copper ore through bio-flotation is demonstrated. An autotroph Acidithiobacillus Ferrooxidans bacterium is adapted to high grade mixed copper ore sample by repeated subcultures. The surface characteristics were studies by analyses at different pH and time intervals. From the studies, it was established that the mineral-adapted cells became more hydrophobic as compared to unadapted cells during bio-flotation. The separation in gravity concentrators is based on the density difference between valuable and gangue minerals. In addition to density, many auxiliary parameters like particle size, shape, feed rate, pulp density etc. plays an important role in the separation. The performance efficiency of gravity units is largely based on the interference of such auxiliary parameters during separation. Many gravity concentrators are used for the beneficiation of cassiterite ores and performance of which are varying with different feed material, particle size and required enrichment from the unit. Selection of gravity units is generally based on laboratory testing and data collected from the previous experience. In the present investigation cassiterite ore collected from Uljin deposit, South Korea has been subjected to various gravity units like jig, spiral, and Knelson concentrator with the intension to pre-concentrate the ore. Second stage concentration was carried out using shaking tables. The article mainly summarizes performance evaluation methods employed for gravity concentrators. Selection of gravity circuit for the beneficiation of cassiterite was made on the basis of the recovery-grade curve, and Tromp curve methods. "The most common technique for selection of grinding equipment is the Bond method implying determination of a ball mill work index (BWi). The method is perfect for greenfield projects where a ball mill must be sized to grind an ore to 80% passing 75-100 µm. Finer grinding will require application of specific correction factors to a standard equation since initially the method was not designated for sizing of fine (minus 75 µm) grinding mills. Significant issues are related to selection of grinding equipment for treatment of originally fine materials when the standard procedure is not applicable. In 1984, Levin published his special technique titled as “A proposed test for the determination of the grindability of fine materials”, where he offered to use the standard Bond ball mill for determination of a specific grinding energy. However, this method did not meet with wide recognition. In 2017, Institute TOMS under guidance of JKMRC’s specialists performed a testwork aimed at verification of a new universal technique for determination of grindability of initially fine materials. An object was to test three aged tailings samples for the subsequent modelling of comminution circuit and evaluation of potential throughput of the existing ball mills with final grind size of ?80 passing 53 µm. In parallel with development of the universal approach, TOMS’ specialists carried out tests according to the Levin method in order to compare the data resulted from two methods. The results from lab ball mill testing on three products following the alternative test methods are presented in this paper along with the testing methodology and results analysis. Specific energy was calculated for regrinding of the materials to the required size. Difference of the examined methods and assessment of their applicability for sizing of full-scale equipment are explored."

As core part of flotation column, aerator has been always priority research. A new type of porous aerator made of stainless sintered microcellular material is designed , which diameter is between 20µm to 40µm. High bubble surface area flux is obtained at low air pressure 20kPa by this type of aerator in water. In order to extend its applied range ,experiments were carried out in alkali slurry (pH=12) , resulting with porous aerator clogged after working 20 days . Sampling the cross-section of aerator detected by microscope and X-ray diffraction ,the reason clogging was found. Then plugging aerator was reactivated after putting it in acidic liquor treated by ultrasonic for about ten minutes. On-line aerator maintenance can be done in no down time , and it can be repetitive-used after recovered ,so reduced capital costs.

Two lines of single stage autogenous milling circuits have been installed and commissioned as the primary grinding process for the Sino Iron project where magnetite ore is treated to produce iron concentrate via magnetic separation. Various challenges were encountered during the commissioning and ramp up stages which are discussed in the paper and include treating a highly competent ore in a closed circuit AG mill, operating the largest mills in the world and dealing with a number of engineering issues related to plant operability. Details of how these challenges were overcome are described as well as the observed operating characteristics of the mills and their optimisation through rigorous study, simulation and successful solution implementation. Further potential improvement opportunities are also discussed as part of the ongoing technical program at site.

A culture-independent approach based on 16S rRNA gene clone library was used to analyze the bacterial community change both associated to the solids and in the liquid phase during pyrite bioleaching process. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA fragments revealed that the retrieved se-quences mainly related to genus Leptospirillum, genus Sulfobacillus and genus Acidithiobacillus. During the bioleaching process, genus Leptospirillum trends to grow associated to the solids while major of genus Sulfobacillus were in the liquid fase, only accounting little portion in the solids. Genus Acidithiobacillus can grow both on the solids and in the liquid phase, but accounting high portion on the solids.

Today, arsenic has become a much greater problem than before because of the limitations introduced by WHO and USEPA that are lowered from 0.05 ppm to 0.01 ppm. In the nature Arsenic is mostly found as inorganic compounds in the forms of arsenite (As+3) and arsenate (As+5) in aqueous solutions. Arsenic contamination in ground and surface waters has been encountered in almost every country. This element has a carcinogenic effect and can occur in natural sources and anthropogenic sources such as metal mining, groundwater usage and industrial activities. In this study adsorbing colloid flotation was applied in the presence of aluminum sulfates. In the experiments SDS and K-Oleate were used as collectors while MIBC was the frother employed. The effects of collectors and aluminum/arsenic ratios on the removal of arsenic were examined under various pH values. It was found that arsenic removal enhanced with increasing aluminum concentration. Furthermore, it was observed that pH was a very critical parameter in all experiments. The best results were obtained when initial As: SDS: Al concentrations were 10:40:40 ppm at pH 5.5. At this concentration, the efficiency of arsenic removal found to be 99.9%. In this study, the QEMSCAN technology is used to acquire quantitative modal, textural, mineral association and liberation data on different products generated from with or without washing, fractionation by size and density using screens and heavy liquids/panning, which has provided significant information on the quality and beneficiability of four categories of low Grade iron ores from Jharkhand-Orissa region. The deposit of low Grade iron ore has been categorized into four categories viz. Grade-I with <45% Fe(t) a) containing shale rich type and b) BHJ rich type; Grade-II with 45-55% Fe(t) and Grade-III with >55% Fe(t) containing conventional flaky, hard, kanga, lateritic, shale and BHJ litho/ore types in varied proportions. Mineralogy is similar across all samples being hematite, martite, goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite. Banded Hematite Jasper has difficult liberation characteristics due to highly compact banded mode of silica mineral occurrence with hematite. In all categories, the grade dilution is by the presence of 1) ?Discrete gangue rich litho types? at lump size and 2) ?Within ore types?. The second type of grade dilution contains coating of gangue phases around the iron ore minerals and different degree of locking of gangue phases within iron ore minerals. Further characterization and beneficiation assessment details are discussed in this paper.
