Ore dilution or stope overbreak increases the cost of production and ultimately reduces the profitability of a mining operation. The adverse economic impact of ore dilution is due to the added costs associated with the mucking, haulage, crushing, hoisting, milling, and treatment of waste rock or low grade ore in the hangingwall and footwall. One factor that could have a significant influence on stope overbreak is the undercutting of the stope into the walls. Undercutting stope walls is often necessary, in particular in narrow vein mines. Moreover, equipment size has a role in drift sizing where stope undercutting may become a must in order to fit the mobile equipment while respecting legal clearances.

"This paper compares Canadian provincial mining safety regulations addressing hoist safety, automatic hoisting, and shaft obstruction. The regulations are quite similar among provinces, with only slight differences. Risk-mitigation strategies used in other industries are discussed, including their applicability to mine hoists. The specific case of software safety is introduced through examples. The mitigation of software failure is based on the use of the software lifecycle as recommended by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61508 standard. Finally, ways to improve hoist safety are proposed.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article compare entre elles les diverses réglementations provinciales canadiennes concernant la sécurité des machines d'extraction, le levage automatisé et les obstructions dans les puits. Les réglementations sont assez semblables entre les provinces, mais elles comportent de légères différences. Les stratégies d’atténuation des risques utilisées dans d’autres industries sont abordées, incluant la possibilité de les appliquer aux treuils de mines. Le cas spécifique de sûreté des logiciels est abordé par des exemples. "ChairmanThis part of the discussion is intended as an exchange of information between those who have installed rubber liners in their mills and a means of others to get information that may help them decide if rubber liners would be applicable to their mills.To start the discussion and to relate it to the previous section of this symposium Mine Equipment Co. Ltd. have supplied some graphs that will give some idea of the noise suppression that may be expected from the u.se of rubber liners instead of steel. The figures used in preparing the graphs came from installations of rubber liners in Sweden.L. Strah - Mine Equipment Co.The graph, Figure 1, shows on the bottom the octave band range. The noise level generated by the steel liners is represented by the dotted line and lies within the shaded area where it is considered that hearing damage may result. The solid line represents the noise level generated by rubber liners in the same mill and you will see it is below the shaded area. Although it is not marked on the graph I think the decibel range is from 7 5 to 115. The next one, Figure 2 which shows the relative noise levels generated by steel balls and pebbles with both steel and rubber liners shows the decibel range."

A novel sol ? gel (SG) synthesis procedure utilizing varying ratios of glycine and ethylene glycol to total metal cations has been developed to create high purity nanometer sized La0.65Sr3.5MnO3 powders. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) have confirmed that the crystallite sizes of such powders are ~ 20 nm, and the aggregate particle sizes vary between 100 to 300 nm. Mixing varying weight percents of SG LSM powders with commercially available Praxair LSM in a composite LSM/YSZ functionally graded cathode has been shown, through the use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), to exhibit enhanced oxygen reduction kinetics vs. at conventional cathode materials.

"After an extensive period of University research and field trials, large scale reclamation of the Waite Amulet tailings discharge areas commenced in the spring of 1978. The Noranda program consists principally of sampling the complete dam to determine the vegetation potential of the various areas, addition of the required amelioration materials, and the use of good agricultural practices. This paper describes the development work that led to the establishment of the Noranda-Guelph Contract and the subsequent findings concerning the revegetation of tailings dams. Current revegetation procedures are presented. INTRODUCTIONThe Amulet Mine Ltd. was staked in 1924 and by 1930 had constructed a small 300 ton per day flotation plant. During the late twenties and early thirties, Noranda Mines Ltd. increased its equity in the company to gain a sixty percent share of this small mine. In 1933 the mine was amalgamated with another small producer, the Waite Ackerman Montgomery Mine Ltd., which was more than eighty per cent controlled by Noranda to form the Waite Amulet Mines Ltd.An interesting historical side point to the story of the Waite Ackerman Montgomery property is that a concentrator was never constructed. In fact, the first ore to go through the Horne mill of Noranda Mines Ltd., built in 1928, was not from the famous upper H and L ore bodies but custom shipments from the Waite."

Prevention of cuprous and cupric oxide formation on stored ETP copper rod is a major concern for copper rod and wire producers. During normal storage periods copper oxide layers can increase from less then 100 A to more then 1000 A exceeding ASTM specifications and discoloring the rod surface. Various types of corrosion inhibitors are tested and compared in effectiveness for prevention of copper oxide formation on stored copper rod. Aromatic triazole compounds are also compared to a non-azole containing compound.

"The Delnite mine is in the northwest part of Deloro township, Cochrane district. The property consists of 307 acres on the so-called 'South Break' in the Porcupine camp. The Company was formed in 1934 to take over the holdings of La Roche Mines, Limited. Gold has been produced continuously since June 1, 1937. The value of the gold recovered to date (December 31, 1946) has been $7,456,000, and the average grade of ore $6.81 a con.The ore at the Delnite occurs in relatively narrow, persistent, quartz-ankerite veins, which generally contain tourmaline and have a ladder-like structure. The gold occurs in the free state, and in association with pyrite and arsenopyrite, the two chief sulphides. The host rock is fine-grained, highly carbonatized andesite of Keewatin age."

The full competition between mass transport and reaction in PEMFC unfolds in cathode catalyst layers (CCLs). Recently developed models provide vital insights into effects of thickness and composition on effectiveness of catalyst utilization and performance. However, the CCL's key function in liquid water removal is rather unexplored. Studies of water balance in PEMFCs focus mostly on other cell components. Notwithstanding this prioritization, a simple calculation shows that the CCL is the PEMFC's favourite medium for conversion of liquid water into vapor. Porous structure and wetting properties steer the interplay of evaporation, transport and reaction. A model will be presented, that links pore space morphology, composition, distributed properties (concentrations, pressures, reaction rates, potential) with global performance (critical phenomena). It reveals how problems of flooding in the fuel cell could be mitigated by properly adjusting catalyst layer structure and operation conditions and under which conditions all liquid water arriving in the CCL would leave it as water vapour through the CCL/GDL interface. Results for a simple variant of the model emphasize the role of the CCL as a watershed for the whole cell.

This paper outlines opportunities provided for enhanced management and process control by ISA PROCESSTM technology. ISA PROCESSTM technology has the core advantage of offering the potential for vastly improved electrode handling systems. This fundamental characteristic has enabled ISA PROCESSTM technology to develop management and process control systems that are modular, minimalist in their complexity and tailored to a tankhouse operating environment. A review will be presented on the current status of management and process control in ISA PROCESSTM tankhouses covering the central issue of electrode handling as well as electrolyte circulation systems, voltage monitoring, cathode plate tracking, and product tracking. Particular reference will be made of the recent development by Xstrata Technology (XT) and their technology partners, VRT Systems, of an Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based solution for tracking ISA PROCESSTM cathode plates. The system encompasses fixed readers which identify plates passing through the stripping machines and the use of sophisticated tracking and database software enabling the development of cathode asset management and operational strategies. The performance of individual plates and batches of plates can be tracked through a full service history.

Commercial production of barite commenced in British Columbia in 1940; shipments have been recorded from ten deposits, of which four are particularly significant: The Brisco, Silver Giant, Parson, and Mineral King mines. Parr of the barite production is a by-product of base metal deposits in which barite is a major gangue mineral. About one hundred occurrences are known. COMMERCIAL production of barite in British Columbia dates back to 1940. Production volumes rose and fell and reached 39,900 tonnes in 1972. The main producer is Mountain Minerals Limited . There are two principal areas of barite deposits in British Columbia: ( I) The southeast part of the province along the Rocky Mountain Trench , which is the source of all production to date. (2) Stratabound occurrences in northeast British Columbia in the Gataga-Ketchika rivers and Muncho Lake areas which are not yet developed. Of the approximately one hundred reported barite occurrences, only ten have recorded commercial shipments, some of insignificant amount. So far, four deposits have proved to be important producers: Brisco, Silver Giant, Parson and Mineral King. The Mineral King property is situated near the confluence of Toby and Jumbo Creeks, 35 km southwest of lnvermere. The lead-zinc-copper-iron-barite deposits, as described by Fyles (1959, 1962), replace Proterozoic Mount Nelson dolomites of the Purcell system on the limb in the trough of a complex, tight syncline. The mine operated from 1954 to 1967 and 2,097,900 tonnes of baritic ore that was processed for base metal concentrates and also produced 22,680 tonnes of by-product barite. Since 1970, some 136,000 tonnes of barite have been recovered from the old tailings pond. The deposit is now considered depleted. The Silver Giant mine is located 10 km northwest of Spillimacheen. Barite and lead-zinc sulphides replace Cambrian Jubilee limestone near their contact with the overlying Ordovician McKay slate. Mineralization is located in the nose of an overturned plunging anticline. Between 1951 and 1957 800,000 tonnes of baritic ore were processed for lead and zinc concentrate. After 1959 barite was also produced , first from open pit, and later from reworked tailings. Up to 1979 production of barite totalled approximately 180,000 tonnes. Two other producing mines in the area are descri bed by G.R. Manson (this volume). Large, bedded stratabound barite deposits are reported from northeastern British Columbia. Six major shale-hosted Industrial Minerals in Canada lead-zinc-barite occurrences are known in the Devonian Gunsteel Formation. These are: Driftpi le Creek, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Pie, Fluke and Elf. In addition, numerous occurrences of strati form blebby or nodular barite and locally massive white crystalline barite are known from the Driftpi le Creek and Ak ie River districts in Gunsteel shale and from the Kechika, Road River and Ware map areas from Silurian siltstone . The size of these deposits is impressive; the baritic horizon at Mount Alcock is reported to be 25 to 30 m thick , and dri ll ing results from the Cirque deposit indicate reserves of 30 mi llion tonnes of baritic lead-zi nc-si lver ore. Similar bedded barite deposits are also reported from Midway area, near the Yukon border.

"At Smoky River Coal Limited (SRCL), economic occurrences of structurally thickened coal deposits form attractive surface mining targets. These steeply dipping, structurally complex deposits require that special attention be given to pit wall design and operational practices.Where anchor support is feasible, there is potential for reducing footwall waste requirements and/or increasing coal recovery. SRCL has used rock anchors to support footwall slopes since 1985. This paper outlines design considerations and performance of rock anchor support systems at SRCL.Three case histories are included that illustrate the design process for supporting steeply dipping footwall slopes using rock anchors.IntroductionWestern Canada contains vast reserves of high grade coking coal largely located in two belts within the Rocky Mountain Foothills straddling the Alberta/British Columbia border. There are about one billion tonnes of ""clean"" coking coal reserves (Romaniuk and Naidu, 1986) situated near existing mining infrastructure. Within the reserve areas shown in Figure I, a total of six producers operate 10 large mines linked with ports situated on Canada's west coast. Al! of the producers operate conventional shovel/truck surface pits.Surface mineable reserves within some of the mountain coal mines are located on dip slopes or where the geologic structure has thickened the coal near the surface, creating low strip ratio targets. Footwall slopes in these mines are developed parallel to bedding, thus minimizing waste extraction and preventing undercutting of potentially unstable strata. The base of the mineable coal measures in both north and south regions is marked by massive quartz sandstone units (Torrens Member and Moose Mountain Member) which often form the footwall. Footwalls developed within this basal sandstone unit can attain very high unbenched heights often with little risk of instability. In cases where the footwall is developed on weaker strata above this basal unit, stability considerations control slope height when bedding dips exceed about 30°. In these situations it is desirable to assess the benefits of artificial support to increase the unbenched footwall slope height."

Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. (DDMI) has treated systems development as an integral part of the construction project when it built Canada?s second diamond mine. Fully aware that the proper collection and processing of operational data is needed to drive business decisions during production and planning, key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were defined to effectively manage operations when the mine went into production. The Production Information Management System (PIMS) allows KPIs to be measured, reported, and transferred to other systems in a reliable and convenient manner. PIMS provides a mechanism to collect real time production data from the various control systems around the site and acts as a tool to ?drill-down? and establish the important cause-effect relationships that impact the value of a KPI. Thus PIMS provides a data collection, storage, management, and an environment in which cause-effect relationships can be analysed and statistically verified. This understanding of the real cause-effect relationships, close to the source of the data and in the context of the operation, can be used to improve both operations and maintenance performance. The PIMS includes the PI Database implementation, its associated external interfaces with the various Control Systems, Cleaning Packaging Weighing System, Environmental System, Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) System, and Diamond Tracking System (DTS), as well as laboratory data collection, custom applications (downtime tracking, data reconciliation) and user clients. The interface with the EAM system provides material flow quantities and equipment availability on which the plant performance reports are based. The transfer of equipment usage to the EAM system is fed into the maintenance notifications and work orders functionality in the EAM. The environmental system interface provides the mechanism for capturing water consumption data required to generate the various regulatory reports. The interface to the cleaning-packaging-weighing system provides the mechanism for capturing batch data for transfer to the DTS for diamond product tracking at the production splitting facility in Yellowknife. The PIMS lab application provides a means of getting sample data into the system for critical metallurgical metrics, and the data reconciliation application provides a means of manually verifying the data before it is published or passed onto other systems.

This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. "It is generally acknowledged that Canadian and foreign-based mining companies are spending relatively fewer dollars in Canada and more dollars abroad than was the case not many years ago. It is common to see the Canadian tax system being fingered as one of the causes in this shift in direction. However, if one takes the time to peel away the surface of our tax system, and to probe a little deeper into its substance, it will be found that the Canadian taxation of mining is generally quite competitive. IntroductionCross-border shopping in the mining industry? - Absolutely! Economics 100 teaches that dollars are votes in the capitalist system, and mining companies are going to cast their limited number of votes where they can achieve the highest return at the least risk. The Canadian consumer knows that taxes are a major factor in cross-border shopping, and mining company executives know that the same tenet holds true in their industry. Unfortunately, mining operations are subject to such a bewildering array of tax rules that making an intelligent decision is not always an easy matter.Statutory Tax RatesConsider, for example, the ""statutory"" tax rates shown in Table 1. (Statutory tax rate in this table refers to the simple sum of federal and provincial tax rates on profits as specified in the tax legislation.) Looking only at the total statutory tax rates (such as 66070 for Manitoba) , one might quickly observe that the Canadian mining industry is subject to a truly onerous tax regime, especially as compared to the United States where statutory tax rates can be in the 34% range."

"In March 2003 the CIM Council adopted and approved the document “Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties” as developed by the Special Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal). The document is referred to as the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines. The document evolved from a specific recommendation by The Mining Standards Task Force (MSTF) of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission in its Final Report (January 1999) that the CIM form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on approaches to valuation of Mineral Properties. The CIMVal Standards and Guidelines are organized into two parts: •,Standards which are general rules in the Valuation of Mineral Properties. The use of the Standards is mandatory if the Valuation Report is stated to follow CIMVal (although not mandatory in the sense of having regulatory authority). Definitions are given at the beginning of the Standards. •,Guidelines which elaborate on the Standards and, while not mandatory, provide guidance and best practices which are highly recommended to be followed in the Valuation of Mineral Properties.CIMVal specifies requirements for the Qualified Valuator who has the responsibility for choosing the appropriate approaches and methods for the valuation of mineral properties. With regard to the specifics of the application and practice of valuation approaches and methods, CIMVal directs the Qualified Valuator to the large body of published papers, published valuations, presentations and court judgments to guide his or her choice. This is also the approach taken by VALMIN (Australia) and SAMVAL (South Africa). To facilitate the dissemination of industry practice, the CIMVal Committee organized a “Valuation Day” at the CIM Annual General Meeting in Toronto (Mining Millennium 2000), on March 8, 2000. Industry experts presented papers on valuation of Mineral Properties which were subsequently published in a proceedings volume and individually ad technical papers in the CIM Bulletin. The Management and Economics Society of CIM has continued to identify and publish papers on valuation in the CIM Bulletin and Magazine. The present document gathers in one place the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines, the papers from the 2000 Valuation Day, and a number of subsequent papers that illustrate industry practice for the valuation of mineral properties."

The continued demand for mineral products, coupled with the depletion of high-grade ore resources, has led to the mining of lower grade ores, which often require fine grinding to achieve mineral liberation. Regrinding of low-grade ores results in the production of fine gangue mineral solids and produces vast quantities of fluid fine tailings which are difficult to separate from water, particularly if they are composed of clay minerals. Organic synthetic polymers and inorganic salts have been widely applied in flocculation of colloidal suspensions in the treatment of mining tailings. However, there are growing concerns regarding their impact on the environment and human health. Recently, extracellular biopolymer flocculants or bioflocculants have attracted much attention as alternative reagents. In this study, much effort has been devoted to considering the effectiveness of protein and polysaccharide-based biopolymers for the dewatering of clay slurries. The interaction between kaolinite and illite clays and biopolymers was investigated via settling tests at pH 7 and 10. Zeta potential measurements were also conducted as a complementary technique. Results showed that protamine and lysozyme protein- based biopolymers were generally the more effective bioflocculants. Pectin, a polysaccharide-based biopolymer, showed a dispersing effect and has the potential to be used as a dispersant and/or depressant for clay minerals in froth flotation. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of high-grade ore resources, the need for mining of low-grade ores has increased over the past few decades (Bourgès-Gastaud, Stoltz, Dolez, Blond, & Touze-Foltz, 2014; Chen, Walshe, Fru, Ciborowski, & Weisener, 2013; C. Wang, Harbottle, Liu, & Xu, 2014). Low-grade ores often require fine grinding and contain clay minerals, leading to the generation of fluid fine tailings (FFT). It is a challenging process to separate suspended clay particles from water (Craciun, Manaila, & Stelescu, 2013; Dompierre, Lindsay, Cruz-Hernández, & Halferdahl, 2016; Kasperski & Mikula, 2011; Mercier et al., 2012). Clay minerals form stable dispersions in water due to their anisotropic nature, non-spherical morphology and colloidal size (Lagaly & Ziesmer, 2003; Olphen, 1977). The difficulty in separating clay minerals from water has led to the accumulation of vast quantities of FFT in oil sands, phosphate, copper and nickel operations, representing a huge liability for mining companies (Chen et al., 2013; Mercier et al., 2012)

The conducting of risk reviews is an essential activity in ensuring safe operating conditions, both during project design phases and for existing facilities. The following paper presents a structured approach to the conducting of risk reviews for existing operations, including descriptions of supporting documentation and guidelines for on-site review activities. The conducting of regular site risk reviews and safety audits is crucial in ensuring the continued safe operation of existing facilities, particularly in the copper industry where numerous processes and unit operations can present catastrophic risks, both in terms of loss of life and financial liability. The structured approach presented aims to provide a logical and comprehensive analysis of risks to align safety-related facilities and procedures with current industry best practice and ensure consistency across multiple client operations. INTRODUCTION The production of copper, whether by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical process routes, carries significant inherent safety risks. Production volumes are relatively large, often requiring complex processing routes, multiple production trains and a variety of supporting ancillary facilities. Furthermore, considering the relatively large size of ore reserves, copper production plants can have operational lives well beyond the typical design duration of 20 years. Risk reviews and safety audits can take various forms and have various areas of focus. The methodologies and approaches described below relate specifically to catastrophic risks, defined broadly as risks that carry the potential for multiple fatalities and significant financial losses. Focus is given to existing facilities and does not consider the risk-related activities such as hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies conducted during plant design. The structured approach presented aims to provide a guide for effective site- based audits and a logical analysis of risks identified. RISK CLASSIFICATION Table 1 provides a typical summary of the classification of risk types and the associated consequence categories and descriptions. It illustrates the descriptions of a catastrophic risk in terms of the broad categories of Health & Safety, Environment, Financial, Image & Reputation and Legal & Compliance. In terms of the Financial category, numeric costs ranges are often prescribed depending on the financial characteristics of the specific operation and the associated parent company.
