"Uranium exploration by Eldorado prospectors north of Lake Athabasca began in late 1944 and resulted in initial discoveries in 1946 in the Beaverlodge region with mill production starting in early 1953. The operation was closed in mid-1982 having produced 21,457,947 kilograms U30 8 from the Eldorado FayVerna mine, Eldorado satellite operations and from other district producers on a custom basis.The Fay- Verna mine consists of pitchblende-brannerite orebodies spatially associated with both sides of a regional eastwest structure, the St. Louis Fault. The orebodies in the footwall (Fay) are elongate deposits of two types raking steeply to the southwest along the 50 degree south dip of the fault.One type consists of networks of fractures and veins filled with pitchblende, calcite and quartz in chlorite, epidote-altered mylonitized mica schists and amphibolites of the Middle Aphebian Tazin Group. The other type is comprised of fragments of mylonitized metasomatic quartz-feldspar granite of Late Middle Aphebian age cemented with a matrix of pitchblende, brannerite, calcite and some quartz. The vein networks lie en echelon in the footwall of the breccia ore bodies which, in part, are capped by the mud gouge of the St. Louis Fault; in other places, the breccia orebodies are overlain by basal conglomerates, grits and arkoses of the late Aphebian Martin Formation which itself immediately underlies the plane of the fault.Orebodies in the hanging wall (Verna) are a series of irregular, tabular deposits lying within a tightly overturned syncline of Tazin mica schists, amphibolites and siliceous mylonites. They consist of pitchblende, calcite-filled fractures grouped into zones and deposits displaying stratabound habits within individual rock types.Also described are several Eldorado satellite properties which were significant producers of uranium and which display complementary geology to that in the Fay- Verna mine.In general, uranium deposits in the Eldorado Beaverlodge region are closely related to minor structures associated with major faults. Uranium appears to be best concentrated where the rocks are well mylonitized and brecciated. Pitchblende fills networks of veins and fractures in metasediments and metavolcanics as well as matrix material cementing brecciated, mylonitized granite. All deposits in the Beaverlodge region lie in close proximity to the unconformity between the Martin Formation and the underlying Tazin Group."

The feed stock of copper fire refining processes consists of two major constituents: blister copper and high-Cu secondary scrap. A large fraction of this secondary scrap, originating from urban mining, is quite high in impurities such as Fe, Ni, Pb and Sn. Problems arise in electro-refining when these elements exceed certain limits. As a consequence, transformation of the secondary copper raw materials into high grade copper has become troublesome. However, the behavior of impurities relevant to fire refining conditions, essential for anode refineries, has not been studied in detail. Furthermore, limited research has been performed on the distribution of Ni between copper metal and slag. In this study, equilibration at 1300°C of liquid Cu-1wt.% Ni alloy and CaO-CuOx- FeOy-SiO2 slag in vacuum sealed quartz ampoules was performed for 12 hours, followed by water quenching. Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis was employed to investigate the composition of the equilibrated alloy and slag. The distribution coefficients of Ni between slag and alloy were determined as a function of oxygen partial pressure and CaO concentration. INTRODUCTION Europe’s initiatives for a circular economy, pushing for resource-efficient ways for a sustainable future, puts Europe at the forefront of the globe. In Europe, 50% of the copper originates from recycling, being an excellent example of Europe’s circular economy (Juncker, 2018; Lacasse, 2018). High-grade copper recyclates are made available which regularly contain impurities like Fe, Ni, Sn and Pb. Aurubis Belgium is responsible for recycling these types of recyclates to anodes, cathodes and copper products. However, after fire refining of copper, the aforementioned impurities remain in the anode copper, leading to problems in electrorefining. During the fire refining of copper, a CaO-“Cu2O”-“Fe2O3”-SiO2 slag is used. Fundamental information of the distribution of impurities between the copper and this slag system is therefore essential to understand and improve the copper fire refining process at Aurubis Belgium.

"The geometry of the terrain topography before and after the failure are the essential factors for analyzing a landslide and for the design of remedial works. This paper presents a method to determine these factors, considering that the determination of the slide surface profile is difficult and costly using traditional methods and the pre-slide topography data is often not available. The presented method to locate the 3-dimensional geometry of the slide surface is based upon determining the slide surface in 2- dimensional vertical sections. This method utilizes post-slide topography of the area to determine the pre-slide topography and uses equations to estimate the pre-slide situation using a statistical process applied to points located on the sliding mass. This method is tested on the Maskun landslide in Iran. The results indicate the applicability of the proposed method to obtain the key factors for the back analysis of a landslide in a cost effective manner.INTRODUCTIONProbably the most reliable method of determining the strength of soil and rock mass is to back analyze a failed or failing slope (Caia et al. 2007; Wyllie & Mah, 2004). This method is used in geotechnics for estimating geotechnical parameters of the rock and soil mass (Sakurai et al., 2003; Frayssines and Hantz, 2009; Cepuritis et al. 2010), but it requires that the failure mode is well established and that there is complete and precise information available on the slide surface and the sliding mass (Sjöberg, 1996). Measurement of the slope profile before failure provides the basic information required for a back analysis (Hock & Bray, 1981). The post-slide topography is another key factor. The back analysis process for determining the actual strength parameters of soil or a decomposed rock mass after a landslide requires knowledge of the sliding mass geometry, both before and after the sliding event. Many studies are reported in the literature about the application of back analysis for determining geotechnical and geomechanical parameters of rock and soil mass (Sakurai et al., 2003; Cepuritis et al. 2010; Frayssines and Hantz, 2009, Hussain and Stark, 2011), but they generally present little information about the geometry of the slide surface, and the weight of rock and soil mass that slid, although these factors are the most important parameters for back analysis process. Liang and Xue-song (2012) determined the slip surface having the minimum factor of safety (called critical slip surface in deterministic analysis of slopes) and the slip surface with the minimum reliability index (called critical reliability slip surface), but they have not considered the actual profile and geometry of the slide surface. Rocscience (2013) proposes the back analysis option in the Slide software for slope stability study, but it requires an imposed slide surface as input; alternatively, one can estimate by a finite element analysis the surface with the minimum factor of safety. However, this estimated surface is very likely different from the actual sliding surface, considering the uncertainties in input data of the finite element method."

"Filter cloth in the mining industry is an ambiguous title asthis suggests filter cloth use from underground ventilation to the refining processes. The time allowed for this paper would be better served in con-centrating on vacuum filters common to all mine mills and to offer some simple guide lines to the mill metallurgists in the choice of filter cloth for this type of filter.The requirement of the filter cloth is to separate solids from liquids under a vacuum head by forming a permeable layer of solids or cake, through which liquids can flow until the panel or disc sector leave the slurry tank and to continue to pass residual moisture from the cake formed during the cake drying cycle, and to discharge the cake on air-blow so that the cycle can be repeated.Whilst the mill metallurgist should not be expected to under¬stand all aspects of filter cloth manufacturer, it is however, advantageous for him to understand a little of the textile language associated with filter cloth for his own protection against ""trial-and-error"" methods, which are both time consuming and costly.If improvements are to be made over existing filter cloth in use an examination of the limiting factors of the cloth used should be made and the major causes for removal determined, e.g. cloth blinding, high moisture in cake, poor cake discharge on air blow, mechanical damage to cloth.As each of the limiting factors mentioned has a bearing on the choice of fibre used, the yarn type and weave of a suitable cloth, an under-standing of these points will assist the mill metallurgist in avoiding repetitive trials offering little degree of success."

In order to maximize the recovery of ore and to save on costs in undercut mining, backfill of low cement content is used to fill the mined out excavations. This backfill mass is supported by a sillmat structure cast from cemented backfill of very high strength. The stability design of sillmats must be carefully studied to provide very effective, safe and economic mining operations. This paper presents a methodology and procedures for sillmat design based on three engineering modeling approaches: analytical, numerical and centrifuge modeling. Application of the design approach is demonstrated from a design study conducted for an underground gold mine, aimed at minimizing backfill binder content and at producing cost efficient paste fill recipes for sillmat construction. Application of the engineering design recommendations was projected to result in substantial annual cost savings to the mine operation.

"The Underground Test Facility (UTF) project operated by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) north of Fort McMurray has achieved marked success in field testing mining access and horizontal well in situ recovery of bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands.Mine access has provided for effective placing and operation of horizontal wells in the oil sands from a tunnel system in the underlying limestone. Performance of the in situ recovery process, Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, has substantially exceeded forecasts made at the start of the project. Over-all results of the program to date show great promise for horizontal well in situ technology as a competitive source of bitumen from Alberta's vast oil sands deposits. The potential economics of a commercial expansion at the site are reviewed in this paper.IntroductionIn situ recovery o f bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands has puzzled the oil industry for many year s, but a breakthrough appears close at hand. The Underground Test Facility (UTF) project initiated by the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) has had notable success in the piloting of horizontal well processes, which offer prospects for commercial development even under the highly competitive situation facing the Canadian industry . "The metal-matrix-nano-composite (MMNCs) in this research work consists of an A356 alloy matrix reinforced with 1.0 wt. % SiC 50 nm diameter nanoparticles that can be dispersed within the molten alloy matrix via ultrasonic stirring technology (UST) and induction melting and stirring processing. The necessary ultrasonic parameters to achieve the essential cavitation for adequate degassing and refining of the A356 alloy as well as the optimum fluid flow characteristics for uniform dispersion of the nanoparticles into the A356 alloy matrix have been investigated in this study by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling with a magneto-hydro-dynamics (MHD) model and an UST cavitation model.The MHD model accounts for turbulent fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification, electromagnetic field as well as the complex interactions between the solidifying alloy and nanoparticles by using ANSYS Maxwell and ANSYS Fluent Dense Discrete Phase Model (DDPM) and a particle engulfment and pushing (PEP) model.INTRODUCTIONAluminum matrix nanocomposites can offer outstanding properties, including low density, high specific strength, high specific stiffness, excellent wear resistance and controllable expansion coefficient, which make them attractive for numerous applications in aerospace, automobile, and military industries field (Bozic, 2010, De Cicco, 2009, Elshalakany, 2014, Goh, 2006, Jia, 2013 and 2015, Liu, 2014, Reihani, 2006, and Su, 2010).As shown in literatures (Aki, 1999 and Mussert, 2002), it is highly advantageous to use nano-sized ceramic particles to produce metal matrix nano-composites (MMNCs) since similar ductility and higher strength with the metal matrix can be achieved. Currently, there are several fabrication methods of MMNCs, including mechanical alloying with high energy milling (Chen, 1997) , ball milling (Filho, 2003), nano-sintering (Groza, 1999), spray deposition, electrical plating, sol-gel synthesis, laser deposition, etc. The mixing of nano-sized ceramic particles is normally lengthy, expensive, and energy consuming.Ultrasonic Stirring Technology (UST) has been extensively used in purifying, degassing, and refinement of metallic melt (Jian, 2005, Khalifa, 2008, Eskin, 2002, Xu, 2004, and Meek, 2006) mainly because introducing the ultrasonic energy into a liquid will induce nonlinear effects such as cavitation and acoustic streaming. SiC nanoparticles are widely used as reinforcement particles due to their relatively good thermal and chemical stability. Ultrasonic vibration can improve the wettability between the reinforced nanoparticles and the metal matrix (Lan, 2004, Cao, 2008, and Yan, 2011), which will assist to distribute the nanoparticles more uniformly into the metal matrix. Ultrasonic cavitation in liquids causes high speed liquid jets of up to 1000 km/h. Such jets press liquid at high pressure between the particles and separate them from each other (Hielscher, 2005)."

"Recovering pyrite from the gangue with high sulfur content is of great significance for both economic development and environment protection in China. Due to the global water shortage and high cost in wet separation processes, it is urgent to explore more efficient energy and water conservation method in mineral processing field. This study has proposed an innovative method based on density difference for fine pyrite enrichment by vibration fluidized bed. In this study, the total sulfur content (TSC) of the gangue sample is 19.18%, and the pyrite is disseminated with fine granularity in the gangue which should be crushed for dissociation. The combination and dissociation experiment of -6mm gangue shows that the dominant density of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm comminuted material is +2.9g/cm3. Based on the analysis of characteristic, the effects of various factors on the separation performance were experimental studied. The results show that gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height all have the significant effects. With the increases of superficial gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height, the separation performance all presents a decreasing tendency. Additionally, the TSC of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm materials are respectively up to 37.94% , 35.43% and 30.61% at the optimum conditions, which are the 1.72?1.90 and 2.29 times as much as the TSC of raw material, respectively. This study demonstrates the vibrated fluidized bed can recovery pyrite from the gangue effectively.INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing mining and separation of coal, the yield of gangue has a further growth tendency, which has become one of the largest reserves of industrial waste (Querol et al., 2008). However, many harmful elements, such as S?NOx and Hg, is existed in the gangue leading the serious damage to the soil and environment (Hao, Yun, Zhanyuan, Sen, & Song, 2013). In addition, the economic would be suffered from the loss resulting in the occupied of arable land caused by the accumulation of gangue (Yeheyis, Shang, & Yanful, 2009; Zhou, Liu, Yan, Fang, & Wang, 2012). Therefore, the government has put forward the policies of ""green mining"" in China (Xing & Gao, 2009; R. Zhang, Ai, Zhou, Ju, & Zhang, 2015; Zheng, Du, Li, Qiu, & Yang, 2015). Among different research areas of coal utilization, extracting the useful minerals has become one of hot topics (Ledin & Pedersen, 1996; P. Patra & Natarajan, 2003; Partha Patra & Natarajan, 2004). At present, many researchers has devoted to the desulfurization of coal all over the world. As result, the sulfur element, which is mainly existed in the presence of pyrite, would transferred in the tailings, namely the gangue. Meanwhile, the pyrite is important raw materials to produce rubber, paper, textile and match. Consequently, recovering the pyrite from the gangue is not only suitable to the requirement of ""green mining"", but it could turn the waste into the treasure having the important significance."

"Garnet occurs in schists and gneisses in all provinces of Canada, all mainly in Quebec and Ontario. There is currently a renewed interest in exploration for economic sources of garnet for abrasive applications because of the inherent dangers from exposure to ground silica from sandblasting operations.High-quality garnet is used for lapping and grinding of glass and ceramics; for coated and bonded products such as sandpaper and cloth; and abrasive wheels for grinding and finishing various metals, woods, rubber and plastics. Low-quality garnet is used for cleaning and conditioning aluminum and other soft mewls, particularly by aircraft manufactures. Garnet may be added to grouting cements for oil-well drilling applications, and it has also been used for low- to medium-level radiation shielding. Garnet has been studied extensively by CANMET and its predecessor, Mines Branch, between 1917 and 1990. Twenty-nine studies relating 10 various aspects of beneficiation are presented and a review of the more important studies is presented. The information includes mineralogy, beneficiation methods, product sizes and analyses."

"The estimation of recoverable ore reserves for feasibility in precious metal deposits such as Pine Creek must account not only f or the extreme variability of the ore grade but also for the complexity of the geology. Compatible models f or both must be adopted. Further, very selective mining demands reserve estimates be based on small selection units whose individual grades cannot be estimated reliably from the exploration drilling data.Multigaussian kriging is one method based on a multivariate normal model for estimating recoverable reserves under such conditions. In this paper, a non-mathematical description of the multigaussian model is presented together with its application to the Pine Creek Gold Deposit. The results, when compared to the first year of production, are encouraging for the model but not without surprises.Together, Part 1 and Part 2 of this study combine a detailed and geologically conditioned variogram analysis with an appropriate estimation method for a highly variable low-grade gold deposit. This and other studies of gold deposits familiar to the author show convincingly both that while the appropriate geostatistical skills and techniques are necessary to tackle the question of reserves, equally important but often discounted is the need for an appropriate and compatible geological model. IntroductionThe Pine Creek gold mineralization is associated with saddle reefs, and quartz and quartz- sulphide veining within the Enterprise Anti cline. The anticlinal structure is complex and, prior to mining, the mineralization was considered to be mainly strata controlled. Grades vary up to 160 grams in l .5rn core samples with coefficients of variation in excess of three.The estimation of the recoverable reserves for such a depo sit must account for both the geological complexity and the extreme variability of the gold grade.Part 1 of this work presented the geological model for the deposit and summary statistics 0 f the gold data. A detailed structural and variogram analysis considered both gold grades and the normal score (or gaussian transform) of these gold grades for different composite sizes."

The process of gas diffusion through coal particles and the mathematical physical model under the third kind boundary condition was determined to obtain the rules of gas diffusion through coal particles of different sizes. The analytical solution of the equation was obtained by the Method of Mathematical Physics. The parameters of analytical solutions and the implications of parameters were analyzed. The Biot criterion (Bi) and the Fourier criterion (F0) of mass transfer can represent and reflect the features of gas diffusion field of coal particles. Moreover, the measurement method of gas diffusion coefficient and surface mass transfer coefficient is introduced and an example of measurement is given. The achievement can provide the support to prevent disasters related to methane in coal mines.

"The mining and mineral industries have been, and remain, a major component of the Canadian economy. There are approximately 560 producing mining establishments of which there are some 130 metal mines and an equal number of non-metal mines, the balance being quarries for stone, sand and gravel. For 17 metals and minerals, Canada ranks within the top five as a world producer. There are 29 metallurgical plants. Employment in mining, smelting and refining was about 150000 in 1990. Mineral production, including coal, is about $20 billion. Exports up to the metal stage amount to $15 billion providing a positive trade balance of some $10 billion.The producing industry has a wide diversity of products. The companies range from small single mining operations to large multinationals. In terms of technology the industry has always been in the forefront of cost-effective practice, either using home-grown innovation or freely importing technology from around the world,The Mining Industry Technology Council (MITEC) makes an annual survey of the exploration and R&D expenditures of the senior mining industry that is the mining companies that are involved in mineral production from their existing mines. It does not include those companies solely involved in exploration using funds raised through equity sales.Table 1 shows the actual R&D and exploration expenditures as a per cent of sales. R&D shows a rising trend since 1988although the drop in value of output due to lower prices must be recognized as contributing to the increase. The point about this compilation is that the mining industry re-invests some 4070 of its sales in both exploration and R&D in order to sustain itself. Exploration for the renewal of metal inventories for future mining is a process unique to mining. It is not classified as R&D, and the necessity for this investment goes unrecognized by those who state that the industry does not do enough R&D."

"Unaltered biotites from three samples of monzonite and gabbro from the Copper Mountain stock and a single sample from a pegmatic biotite-chalcopyrite vein cutting the Triassic Wolf Creek formation have a mean K-A age of 193±7 m.y. These data support a suggestion based on geological evidence that Copper Mountain ore deposits are related genetically to the Copper Mountain stock.A cogenetic mineral pair (biotite and clinopyroxene) from a sample of sericitized and chloritized monzonite of the Copper Mountain stock have identical K-A ages of 150 m.y., which probably represents a time of wide-spread, post-ore, hydrothermal alteration. This alteration is believed to be related genetically to a group of post-ore intrusions known as the ""mine dykes,"" suggesting that they also have an age of 150 m.y."

"The mechanical behaviour of AA6082 is a function of the extrusion conditions and in particular, the quench rate after extrusion. It is well known that precipitation of Mg-Si phases on grain boundaries during quenching can negatively affect the ductility of the alloy. In this study, AA6082 alloys containing 0.5 wt. % Mn and 0.15 wt. % Cr were direct chill (DC) cast, homogenized and then extruded to produce 3 mm x 42 mm strips. The microstructure in the as-extruded strips was unrecrystallized due to the Zener-Smith drag from the Mn/Cr dispersoids. It was shown that a solution treatment of 5 minutes at 560°C did not significantly affecting the as-extruded microstructure but if the as-extruded strip was cold rolled prior to heating, recrystallization occurred concurrently with the solution treatment. As such, 3 initial microstructures were produced, i.e. unrecrystallized and recrystallized with a grain size of 9 and 40 µm. After the solution treatment, controlled cooling experiments were conducted using the Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator with cooling rates of 10, 25, 80°C/s as well as water quenched. The mechanical properties (e.g. yield stress, fracture stress and fracture strain) were determined from tensile tests for the different combinations of initial microstructure and cooling rate. The relationship between the quench rate and precipitation of Mg-Si phases on grain boundaries was examined by FEG-SEM. It was found that the yield stress decreased as the cooling rate decreased and that there was complex relationship between the fracture properties and the microstructure.INTRODUCTION As the automotive industry strives to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions with the goal of reducing the environmental impact, there is a need for lighter vehicles. As a result, aluminum alloys are gaining popularity to replace steel parts as structural components. An exemplar of this is the Ford F-150 pickup truck which has an aluminum body and is ˜750 pounds lighter than the previous steel version of the vehicle. The structure includes a mix of aluminum sheet, extrusions and cast alloys. The current research is concerned with the performance of aluminum extrusions in applications such as side rails, crash tubes and other structural parts. These components experience a combination of bending, stretching and folding both during the forming of the part and in service, e.g. crash of a vehicle. There is a need to have detailed information on the influence of processing on final material performance, in particular the cooling rate after extrusion."

"Abstract - An estimation of resources of structurally complex gold lodes and stockworks represents a challenging task for geoscientists due to the complex geometry of the lodes and discontinuous grade. In the present case study, the resource of a gold stockwork has been estimated by uniform conditioning after the lode has been subdivided into geostatistically defined domains using the indicator probability model. The indicator probability model represents a powerful tool for structural interpretation of the mineralization and can be applied when traditional 3D volume constraining methods (wireframing) have failed to produce a unique, non-subjective model. For comparison, the resources of the same zone have been estimated without domaining. Results of the study clearly show that estimates obtained without domaining of the mineralization can yield a substantial error due to excessive smoothing of the grade.Application of uniform conditioning for modelling the grade distribution has a significant advantage over linear methods (e.g., ordinary kriging). Uniform conditioning enables estimation of local recoverable resources at different selective mining unit sizes that can be substantially smaller than the drilling density without creation of biases or over smoothed local values."

"The flotation separation of muscovite from quartz was investigated using mixed sodium oleate/dodecylamine (NaOL/DDA) collectors. The flotation experiments were conducted on single minerals and their collecting performances were studied by means of adsorption amounts and molecular dynamics simulation. Flotation results show that muscovite presents good floatability while quartz exhibits poor floatability in alkaline condition. Adsorption amounts show that both NaOL and DDA can absorb onto surfaces of muscovite and quartz in presence of mixed surfactants. Molecular dynamics simulation indicates that DDA plays an important role in the adsorption of mixed surfactants on these two mineral surfaces. The molecules of mixed NaOL/DDA are arranged in a rigid and well-ordered packing on muscovite (001) surface. Only a few DDA adsorb on quartz directly, and rest DDA and NaOL molecule exist near by the quartz surface, forming a hydrophilic cylinder-like structure. This study may provide guidance for the flotation mechanism and application of mixed anionic/cationic collectors.INTRODUCTIONIn the past decades, there has been an ever-increasing demand for muscovite (KAl2(Si3Al)O10(OH)2) because of its potential applications in cosmetics, construction and metallurgy industries (Barlow & Manning, 1999). Besides, muscovite is an important carrier for some rare metals, including vanadium, titanium and lithium (SsuerrN, 1979). Quartz (SiO2) occurs as the main gangue mineral in muscovite ores, which results in a low purity of muscovite and limits its wide applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the beneficiation of low grade muscovite ores. Many studies remove quartz by screening and gravity separation in virtue of their differences in shape, hardness and density. However, these methods undergo poor efficiency in case of small particle size (below 50µm) of muscovite and quartz (Liubakka, Sullivan, Lamphere, Corradi, & Dykhuis, 2011; Santos, Franca, & Ogasawara, 2011)."

"A mathematical procedure for determining the underground mining level layout which minimizes the total costs of excavation and haulage is described. This procedure has the advantage over previous graphical procedures of being easily amenable to microcomputers. The paper demonstrates through examples how the procedure can be applied to minimizing discounted costs of level layout as well as providing the optimal location of a production shaft.IntroductionIn recent years there have been numerous publications in mining journals concerning the minimization of mine haulage costs. With the rapid escalation of energy costs during the last decade it is not surprising that several studies applying queuing theory, simulation and mathematical programming to mining related transportation problems have been successfully undertaken. Because of the increasing availability of various sizes of computers these techniques have gained considerable popularity as evidenced by the numerous commercial packages presently being marketed.The publications concerned with haulage cost minimization are generally concluded along the lines of ' ... haulage costs at production rate x will be minimized by assigning y units to location z...'. Details about the route followed and whether it guarantees a minimization of costs are seldom considered. Route data has to date been manually resolved and used for input to developed programs. It would appear that no program has been developed to date which simultaneously minimizes costs by both fleet assignment and routing network resolution.Another important factor in transportation problems is the investment cost associated with the routes; road construction costs or, in the case of underground levels, drift excavation costs. Except for special cases the transport network which minimizes haulage costs only will not provide a minimum excavation cost solution.Zarnbo(1) illustrates by graphical and mathematical procedures how central 'facilities' can be located to simultaneously minimize investment in the transport network and haulage costs. Unfortunately these procedures and others recently applied to mine haulage problems do not provide solutions to the generalized problem. Also because these procedures are geared to graphical solutions and hand computations whereby certain possibilities can be 'visually' eliminated, they can be tedious to program and present storage capacity constraints with current microcomputers."

Marine tailings disposal may in some cases be the best solution to one of mining’s major environmental problems. The public standing of this solution is poor, partly because of past bad practices. Among the tailings problems spreading of super-fines and toxic substances stand out. The two are often interrelated as heavy metals, insoluble to sea water, tend to adsorb on fines and spread piggyback on them. Only one paper seen, has addressed the mineralogy of fine particles in suspension. The topic was a secondary tailings deposit. Studies on the sedimentation of fines in large river estuaries show that different minerals sediment sequentially as the salinity of the river increase. Mineralogy in the particle size range where particle separation takes place, has so far, naturally been in focus for the mineral processors. Next to nothing is known about the fines which may cause environmental problems. Tailings disposal has, due to its complexity, to a large extent been taken over by specialists in other fields, biologists, engineering geologists, chemists. The basics of the subject ought also to be given more input by the mineral processing community. A drawn out battle about tailings discharge into some fjords has taken place in Norway. The detractors focus at fine particles (could be dangerous nanoparticles) spreading and emphasize the effects. Calculation is simple: 5 million tonnes tailings annually discharged, containing 1 wt. % < 1µm determined by laser diffraction, results in 50 000 tonnes of nanoparticles let loose in the environment. The industry`s difficulty to answer, is lack of basic research on this topic. Test work to develop a methodology to address the problem is described. One thing the mineral processors know is that final tailings may be comprised of tailings from separate separation processes, with different properties, some of which may require special treatment. One tailings stream from a Norwegian mine is investigated in such a context.

Radiation plays a critical role in the thermal behaviour of hydrometallurgical process equipment. This effect is particularly important when designing refractory lined equipment used in pressure leach/oxidation processes. In order to simplify this non-linear mode of heat transfer, the effects of radiation had previously been incorporated in an equivalent convective film coefficient in finite element methods (FEM). This prior method omits the effects of radiosity, a critical aspect of radiation heat transfer, which affects the design of refractory lining systems in autoclave vessels. Given that 60% of the heat loss in actual plant practice of an autoclave is due to radiation, reliability in the FEM is therefore impacted. This study validates the use of radiosity in FEM through thermal loading using a combination of simple geometries to be applied to complex environments such as vessel nozzle clusters. The added benefits of using a radiosity load includes an increase in confidence in thermal distribution results, greater accuracy in determining appropriate refractory lining systems, weld overlay sizing, and increased accuracy in structural analysis.

THE Marmoraton mine is located a mile southeast of Marmora, a village in Hastings county, Ontario, 130 miles east from Toronto and 143 miles west of Ottawa. Highway No. 14 from Belleville intersects Highway No. 7 at Marmora and the branch line of the Canadian National railway between Trenton and Bancroft passes through the property just east of the open pit. HISTORY AND GEOLOGY The Marmora orebody appears as the whorls of a thumb print on the aeromagnetic survey map released by the Ontario Department of Min.es early in 1950, the survey of the district having been made in 1948 and 1949, under the joint auspices of the Department of Mines and the Geological Survey of Canada. The &apos;anomaly&apos; appeared to have interesting possibilities, so Bethlehem representatives carried out a ground survey and began drilling the property in June, 1950. A total of 40 holes, aggregating 37,000 feet, were drilled to delineate the ore-body. The Marmora orebody is a re-placement of Precambrian limesto.ne with zones or bands of magnetite interlaid with metamorpl1ic rocks and cut by later intrusives. The ore and associated Precambrian rocks are overlain by 100 to 150 feet of flat-lying Palaeozoic limestone. It is a low-grade deposit averaging 33 per cent iron and requires concentration to raise it to 65 per cent iron grade.
