"PT International Nickel Indonesia, a subsidiary of Inco Limited, mines and processes nickel laterite ores for the supply of nickel matte, primarily to the Japanese market. It has large ore reserves and a substantial portion of its energy requirement is supplied from its own hydro-electric plant. Since the early 1980s, the company has increased its production level and has dramatically reduced its unit costs. Projects are in progress to further decrease costs and recently a major expansion - 31% increase in nominal capacity - has been undertaken, consistent with marketing opportunity in Japan. The expansion project, which has a low capital cost per unit of production, is outlined in this paper.IntroductionPT Inco is a fully integrated mining and smelting facility located in Indonesia on the island of Sulawesi, and is based on a very large, world class nickel laterite orebody located 60 km inland from the Gulf of Bone. Construction of a single furnace line plant started in 1973. Complete supporting infrastructure of townsite, hospital, schools, shopping centres, road systems, and an airport, all had to be built. Prior to completing the first phase, the decision to expand the plant to a three kiln-furnace line was made. A major factor in the decision was the ability to develop the hydroelectric potential of the nearby Larona River. This involved construction of a 30 m high dam, and a 7 km surface canal to the generating station. The penstocks drop 150m to three 55 Mw turbines. The power generated is sufficient to supply the entire electrical load for the complete smelting complex and town site. The unique capability to supply the high smelting energy requirements for a lateritic nickel ore by fully captive hydro power, has, over the past decade insulated PT Inco from the large upward swings in oil prices suffered by other lateritic nickel producers.Wet ore is first partially dried to 20% moisture in two co-currently fired rotary driers, screened on an internal trommel, and delivered to two dry ore storage buildings. The partially dried ore is calcined at 750°C and partially reduced in three large 100 m by 5.5 m kilns. Reduction is accomplished by lancing bunker C oil onto the ore bed at the discharge end of the kiln. The kilns are equipped with five air pipes with onboard blowers to gradually bum the combustible gases generated by the lance oil. The kilns were also originally equipped with two side burners to supply additional heat close to the feed end of the kiln. Calcined ore is transferred by 20 ton refractory lined containers to the furnace feed bins at the top of the smelter. Smelting is carried out in three 18 m diameter furnaces powered by 45 Mw transformers. Slag is skimmed at 1550°C through water cooled breast plates and removed to the slag dump by Haulmaster Carriers. Matte of 25% Ni, 1O% S, 65% Fe is tapped at 1350°C into the converter aisle. The iron is slagged in converters to produce a nickel sulphide matte at 80% Ni. Three rotary Kaldo converters were initially installed. The product matte is granulated, dried, and shipped in returnable rubber bags to Japan. Most of the matte is fluid-bed roasted to nickel oxide and then directly reduced in a second reducing fluid bed reactor at our facilities in Japan.The smelting complex was designed to smelt two million tonnes of dry ore per year, equivalent to 34 000 tonne nickel production at an ore grade of 2% Ni. The cost of the entire project including working capital was $900 million."

"This paper presents a summary compilation of current Canadian coal research projects in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation. The compilation forms the basis for a review of present operations and technology, and of current research efforts. General research areas, requirements and priorities are suggested along with a discussion on achieving the research goals in terms of funds, facilities and staff. The current level of research funding in these areas is assessed. IntroductionCanada's coal production is expected to undergo major expansion over the next two decades in response to domestic demands on coal for electrical power generation, industrial uses and conversion to synthetic .fuels, and in response to export demands for both thermal and metallurgical coal s. Surface mining will continue to dominate, but underground mining will contribute an increasing proportion to total production.In Canada, coal research, particularly in the areas of exploration, mining and preparation (E, M & P), has been limited. Increased impetus has recently been given to this research with expansion of CANMET's activities and with the establishment of the Coal Mining Research Centre (CMRC). University researchers are branching into coal research; strata mechanics and preparation are popular in mining-related fields.With the increase in number of organizations and individuals involved in coal research, a means of keeping abreast of the ongoing work is necessary. An annual summary of the status of and developments in current research assists in providing this information. The CMRC prepared such a summary for Canadian coal E, M & P research in 1979 and it received favourable response, justifying the effort. A 1980compilation has been prepared and pro vides the basis for this paper; it is presented with a brief discussion on background, format and content.The compilation forms a basis for an examination of the current status of Canadian technology in E, M & P and of the ongoing research in each area. General research requirements are reviewed and programs and tasks are suggested, followed by a discussion of research goals in term s of priorities and achievement. An assessment is made of the level of research funding in Canada, with comparisons drawn from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia."

"Waelz oxide from steel mill dust recycling is usually sold to the primary zinc industry, where it is first charged to the roasters to eliminate the remaining fluorides and chlorides. This limits the overall amount of secondary materials which can be used because of different operating problems in the roasters. Another option, in the case where the halides are low, would be direct leaching with low or medium concentrated sulphuric acid. Unfortunately, because of the carryover of some steel mill dust, iron is also present in the Waelz oxide, reaching contents up to 5 wt.%. Since the objective is to treat the solution more or less directly by electrowinning, with only a few simple preliminary purification steps, iron in the solution is a very important factor. Various trials have been done to investigate the dissolution behavior of the iron contained in the Waelz oxide. Although the zinc extraction should reach a maximum, all other elements, especially iron, should be low. This paper describes the results of our research in this area and offers possible options for Waelz oxide utilization. There is also a focus on how other elements, present in the material, influence the dissolution behaviour of zinc and iron, and whether a loss of zinc is unavoidable, if low iron dissolution is required.INTRODUCTION One of the most important secondary zinc resources is the zinc oxide originating from steel mill dust recycling. For the treatment of high zinc containing steel mill dusts, the Waelz kiln process is the so called “best available technology” and it dominates the industry, with roughly a 90% market share. The product Waelz oxide contains mostly zinc oxide, but it also contains lead compounds and halides due to evaporation with the zinc. In addition, it contains iron and some slag compounds due to mechanical carry-over. The presence of halides limits the use of the material as an alternative concentrate for primary zinc electrowinning. Such halides can be reduced to a certain extent by washing and/or solvent extraction (see following chapter). Although lead is not troublesome and theoretically represents a second recoverable valuable metal, iron is unwanted and causes additional problems during leaching. Even though Waelz oxide is generally a highly welcome input material in primary zinc metallurgy, due to its high zinc content, it still contains halides, and in the majority of cases, the oxide must first be treated in a roasting process. Different circumstances, like accretion formation because of the lead and halogen compounds as well as unwanted cooling effects in the roaster, limit the amount of Waelz oxide which can be substituted for the primary concentrate. Another, even more limiting factor, is the allowable concentrations of chlorides and fluorides in zinc electrowinning, the last step in the primary zinc processing route (Ruetten, 2011)."

"Los Bronces had two ROM dump leach operations designated Leach I and Leach II. Leach I was commissioned in 1998 and stopped in 2014 due to the mine requirements. Leach II plant, commissioned in early 2002, was built to treat around 700 million tons of marginal ROM ore averaging 0.45 % total copper. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides.The original electrowinning plant design capacity for copper production was nominal 19,500 tonnes per year at a current density of 276 A/m2 and a current efficiency of 92%. Presently, Los Bronces San Francisco plant typically operates at current densities between 390 and 440 A/m2, much higher than the average in the industry, with current efficiencies around 93% and a maximum copper cathodes production of 37,200 tonnes per year.In order to accomplish these achievements, a number of modifications in the process conditions, in the cell hardware and in the operational procedures have been implemented. In the first case, the specific flowrate, copper concentration and temperature of the electrolyte were modified to accommodate the operational requirements facilitating the increased current density. Associated with the cell hardware, a six cells expansion was added, upgraded equipotential inner cell busbars were installed and the cross section of the cathode hanger bars was enlarged for increased current carrying capacity. Documented operational procedures like short circuit detection and cathode weight control were improved.The modifications implemented and the results obtained are discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONLos Bronces Division of Anglo American Chile is located up in the Andes Mountains, northeast of Santiago. It had two cathode plants, Los Bronces at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.) commissioned in 1998 and closed in 2014 and San Francisco at an altitude of 2800 m.a.s.l. and in operation since 2002.The process is leaching run off mine (ROM) low grade copper sulphide ore in dumps. The mineralogy of this material was estimated to be 70% chalcopyrite, 20% chalcocite/covellite and the balance oxides. The average grade is 0.45% total copper (Cut).At Los Bronces dump, Leach I plant, the pregnant leach solution (PLS) was collected and stored in an underground reservoir. From there, it was fed to a solvent extraction plant with a series-parallel configuration in two extraction stages and one stripping stage. The electrolyte produced was fed to the electrowinning plant having 30 cells and 60 cathodes per cell. Maximum capacity of this plant was 12,000 tonnes per year (tpy)."

The leach solutions of waste of printed circuit boards (WPCB) may contain a wide range of base and precious metals with different concentrations due to heterogeneity of these wastes in composition. Therefore, selection of a suitable metal recovery method is of practical importance for downstream processing of pregnant leach solutions of WPCB. Sulphuric acid leaching of WPCB in the presence of a suitable oxidant is capable of dissolving base metals as well as precious metals such as silver. In this study, cementation of silver from sulphuric acid leach solutions of WPCB using metallic copper, aluminum and zinc was studied. The WPCB sample was assayed to have a silver content of 694 g/t. A synthetic leach solution containing 20 mg/L Ag in sulphuric acid solution (0.51 M H2SO4) was prepared based on the silver concentration in pregnant leach solutions of oxidative sulphuric acid leaching tests. Total sulphate concentration ([SO4 2-]T) was kept constant using sodium sulphate at 1 M. Metallic powders of copper (-850 +600 µm), aluminum (-425 +45 µm) and zinc (-45 µm) were used in the cementation tests. The effects of metal type (Cu, Al or Zn), dosage of metal powders (above the stoichiometric ratio by up to 2000-fold) and temperature (20-80°C) on the rate and extent of silver extraction from the solution was investigated. The effect of presence of copper on the cementation performance was also tested. Under suitable conditions high silver recoveries (>90%) was achieved using metallic copper and zinc while aluminum yielded the lowest silver recovery (i.e. 40% Ag). The kinetics of cementation by zinc was comparatively higher than that of other metals. Increasing the temperature was observed to significantly enhance both the rate and extent of silver cementation. SEM-EDS studies were performed to characterise the metallic powders after cementation.

"This paper is based on work done by the authors in a study of the structural features at a quarry excavated in Chazy limestone on the Island of Montreal. Observations on failures on the quarry walls and benches were recorded, and back analyses of small-scale failures were carried out, thus enabling an assessment to be made of the in-situ strength properties of the rock. Using this information, and data from shear tests in the laboratory, the authors made an analysis of the stability of the south wall of the quarry.IntroductionQuarrying, and excavating for foundations, in the Montreal area involves the removal of million s of tonnes of rock on an annual basis. Even when compared with the quantities mined at major open-pit mining operations, the production figures are impressive. At present, for example, crushed stone is produced at almost 20 quarrying operations either on, or near, the Island of Montreal. The annual capacities of the larger quarries are in excess of one million tonnes each. Lesser, but still substantial, production is achieved at the smaller quarries.Excavations, for foundations , especially during periods of peak construction activity, must also involve large quantities of rock . The writers, however , are not able to produce an estimate of the actual annual tonnages originating from excavations."

"The hematite surface plays a vital role in several processes of industrial and technological importance, such as, in beneficiation of iron ores, catalysis, and geochemical processes. Therefore, it is imperative to have a clear description of the structure and composition of this surface, which forms the underlying basis for such a wide variety of complex phenomena. Particularly, from the perspective of beneficiation of Indian alumina-rich iron ore slimes and fines, a clear understanding of the surface structure and composition of hematite surface and its difference from the alumina surface will facilitate identification and/or design of selective reagents which can be used to separate the two minerals. In this work, the hydroxylated hematite (0001) surface was modeled using density functional theory (DFT). The computed planar relaxations are consistent with X-Ray crystal truncation rod diffraction results reported in the literature. It is demonstrated that only one type of surface, that is, the (OH)3-Fe-H3O3-R is stable under aqueous conditions, as the relaxations for the second type of termination: (OH)3-Fe-Fe-R do not match quantitatively with experiments suggesting that its coexistence with the (OH)3-Fe-H3O3-R surface is unlikely. A detailed analysis of this surface shows that two of the three (OH) groups are not connected to the Fe surface atom. Instead, they form H2O molecules by combining with the H-atoms on the O-layer beneath the Fe-terminated surface leaving the Fe surface-atom bonded to only one OH-group. This undercoordination of Fe-atoms on the surface explains its higher reactivity as compared to hydroxylated alumina.INTRODUCTIONThe hematite surface plays a vital role in several processes of industrial and technological importance. Therefore, it is imperative to have a clear description of the structure and composition of the hematite surface, which form the underlying basis for such a wide variety of complex phenomena. Particularly, from the perspective of beneficiation of Indian alumina-rich iron ore slimes and fines, this is an important problem, as a clear understanding of the surface structure and composition of hematite surface and its difference from the alumina surface will facilitate identification and/or design of selective reagents which can be used to separate the two minerals. Our current research focus is at employing molecular modeling techniques to come up with such selective reagents and then test their efficacy in the practical scenario through selective dispersion – flocculation labscale experiments and subsequently plant trials. Obviously, the correct structure and composition of the hydroxylated hematite surface is a fundamental prerequisite for such investigations."

"Respirable dust samples are collected by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and mine operators as part of the requirements of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. About 1.85 million respirable dust samples collected by MSHA were analyzed for the period 197/ to 1990 f or the states of Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia. Trends in coal dust exposure of continuous miner operators, helpers, and roof bolters were analyzed. The reported production in each of the nine states was analyzed. The relationship between average dust exposure and coal production was evaluated. In addition, the differences between mine operator and MSHA inspector collected data were examined for each state. The average exposure levels for the three occupations - miner operator, miner helper, and roof bolter were also compared.The data indicate that the dust exposure levels have significantly dropped over the last twenty years, while at the same time production has increased, attesting to the ability of the U.S. mining industry to adapt successfully to the stringent dust control regulations. In terms of coal production, it appears that some states, such as Utah, Illinois, and Kentucky, were able to increase their production significantly relative to others, such as Pennsylvania and Virginia. The relationship between dust concentration and coal production is, at best, tenuous. 11 implies that existing dust control technology has assisted several mine operators to meet dust standards, while, at the same time, enabling mines to produce more coal than before. Comparison of data collected by MSHA and mine operators indicate that MSHA inspectors recorded higher dust levels and lower shift production relative to mine operators."

"In October of 1980, Fording's 15 000-ton capacity clean coal silo was put into operation. The silo was unique in that it was designed to allow the mass flow of material, coupled with a sophisticated computer-controlled dynamic loadout/weighing system.On May 1, 1982, an explosion, attributed to a methane buildup, devastated the top of the silo. .As a contingent plan to minimize the effect of the production loss the conveyance to the silo top was reconstructed and the silo' was back in operation by mid-June 1982, although the silo top was left open to prevent further methane buildup. As dust emissions occurred during loading ofthe silo, an extensive study was undertaken to establish dust control for the silo, while at the same time providing methane detection and control.The study, conducted for Fording by the Cambrian Engineering Group of Calgary, involved an extensive search and investigation of existing coal silos. The study concluded that there IS no universally accepted method of controlling methane emissions in coal silos.The study also produced a unique conceptual design for handling methane, while at the same time, protecting the environment . Fording's Clean Coal SiloThe silo, located at Fording Coal's Fording River metallurgical coal operation, is utilized for the storage and load out of cleaned thermally-dried metallurgical coal.The silo was constructed in 1979 and 1980 to reduce unit train loadout times and to facilitate the handling of “special shipments"" of coal. The silo went into operation in October 1980, under manual control and utilized computerized, automated loading by February 198I.The silo is 21 m in diameter and 76 m high, with a nominal capacity of IS 000 live tonnes. The coal storage portion of the silo is 21 m in diameter and 48 m high, utilizing 2 steep-angled hopper outlets allowing mass flow of the stored coal during train loading. Each hopper has a control gate and a discharge chute, one chute for bulk loading, the other for trim loading of coal into the rail cars."

"Fording Coal is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Limited. The company was founded in 1968 to mine metallurgical coalfor export at the Fording River operations in southeast British Columbia.Today, Fording Coal Limited also operates the Whitewood mine under contract to TransAlta Utilities and the Genesee mine under a joint venture arrangement with Edmonton Power. Both these operations are located just west of Edmonton and produce subbituminous low-sulphur coal which is used for power generation. Fording also owns and operates two industrial mineral mines in the United States and is mining overburden under a lo-year contract with Syncrude Canada at Fort McMurray.As of December 1992, Fording Coal Limited owns and operates the Greenhills mine which was closed due to bankruptcy. This papers deals with the innovations and changes which have been made and those which are currently being implemented to make this operation competitive in the world export coal market. IntroductionOn December 4, 1992, following a tendering process, Fording Coal was awarded 80% controlling interest in the Greenhills mine by Trustee Arthur Andersen Inc. Assets acquired included 100010 of the land and coal leases and 80% of the major joint venture assets including all structures. The remaining 20% is owned by Pohang Steel Canada Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Pohang Iron Steel Co. of Korea. The Greenhills mine had been in continuous operation since 1983 and was finally closed due to bankruptcy of its majority owner on October 31, 1992.A permit to operate the Greenhills mine was issued by the British Columbia government on January 29, 1993, and Fording Coal Limited started mining operations in late February 1993.To return the Greenhills mine to profitability significant changes were required in workforce productivity, mining methods and equipment selection. These mine plan changes are designed to make the Greenhills operation competitive in world markets, provide longterm employment for the company's workforce and ensure that a secure supply of coal is available."

Located North of Williams Lake British Columbia, Gibraltar Mine is the fourth largest open pit Copper mine in North America. Gibraltar commenced Copper concentrate production in 1972 with a mill throughput rate of 30,000 tons per day. A series of expansion projects, including installation of a second SAG mill with variable speed drives in 2013, has increased mill throughput to 85,000 tons per day. Over the past 24 months, Gibraltar Mine in partnership with Spartan Controls has executed several advanced process control programming projects culminating in the implementation of a Continuous Speed Controller (CSC) for the most recently installed SAG mill. This paper covers development and results for the SAG mill speed controller. INTRODUCTION In January 2016, the price of Copper fell below $2.00 USD per pound, the lowest price in 7 years. Gibraltar Mine faced a significant challenge; how to maximize profit in an environment where capital spending was not an option. An opportunity was quickly identified to improve performance through increased automation and advanced control of the grinding processes. Beginning in March 2016, Gibraltar Mine partnered with Spartan Controls to introduce Advanced Process Control (APC) to the grinding circuits. The collaboration between metallurgical and process control engineering disciplines proved to be effective for achieving gains in throughput, reliability and productivity for the mill process. The Gibraltar milling facilities include 2 grinding-flotation plants for concentration of chalcopyrite ore with throughput rates of 58,000 tons per day (Concentrator 1) and 38,000 tons per day (Concentrator 2). Each of the two concentrators has a 34’ diameter SAG mill powered by 2 GE 4800 kW synchronous electric motors. For SAG 1 (in concentrator 1), power is transmitted through 2 Eaton Airflex clutches. For SAG 2 (in concentrator 2), the motors are driven by 2 TMEIC Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). All programming is done using DeltaV, which Gibraltar uses as its Distributed Control System (DCS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI).

"The comments given are to help allay generally accepted ideas that the handling of arsenic as arsenic-trioxide (As2o3J in and from off gas pyrometallurgical operation fumes is difficult, hazardous and expensive. It need not be any of these things if the basic and rather unique chemic3l and physical properties are understood and taken care and advantage of through present day technologies. These particular characteristics are:-(1) As2o3 sublimes and re-condenses, at a relatively low temperature;(2) As2o3 is, for practical in-plant purposes, insoluble in water at ambient temperatures and quite soluble in water just below the boiling point;(3) residual suspended and dissolved As 2o3 can be removed from water by complete dissolution with very little sulfuric acid, followed by the addition of small amounts of ferrous sulfate and calcium chlorate, with oxidation to the ferric and arsenite state and precipitation of an insoluble ferric calcium arsenate, thereby lowering the As2o3 content of solutions to acceptable levels. Even lower levels of non-toxic forms of arsenic solids and residual As2o3 in the water solutions can be attained by also using phosphate, and lime, along with the above.A background re past arsenic processing methods, present day operations, plus predictions re future trends, and hazards, are outlined."

"Selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite was studied using various surface treatment methods such as electrolysis, ozone treatment, and plasma. Oxidation via electrolysis method indicated that only chalcopyrite surface is affected by electrolysis due to conductivity difference with molybdenite. Oxidation treatments and XPS analyses indicated that chalcopyrite became hydrophilic due to deposition of oxidized iron on its surface. Various oxidizing methods also showed that chalcopyrite was selectively oxidized and this can apply selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. The possible mechanisms are proposed in this work based on surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulphide minerals often associate molybdenite (MoS2) which is one of the most important by-products (Wills, 2006). It is important to recover molybdenite perfectly not only since molybdenite is valuable mineral, but also contamination of molybdenite into copper concentrate or contamination of copper mineral into molybdenite concentrate indicates penalty for both concentrate values (Wills, 2006). Conventional separation of copper sulphide and molybdenite has been achieved with sulphide bulk flotation followed by selective molybdenite flotation with NaHS addition since NaHS works as a depressant for copper sulphide. However, this current process shows imperfect molybdenite recovery and depressant such as NaHS needs to be used under specific flotation plant since it might be environmental contaminant. Hirajima et al., (2014) have been studied selective flotation of molybdenite and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), which is the most important copper mineral, with plasma pre-treatment. They reported that plasma pre-treatment process followed by washing treatment can improve molybdenite floatability and depress chalcopyrite. This result is attributed to surface oxidation and selective conversion of chalcopyrite and molybdenite wettability. It may be hypothesized that another surface oxidation methods could give a similar result as plasma treatment process. To test this hypothesis, in this study, as comprehensive study of oxidation effect, various oxidation methods such as electrolysis, ozone, and plasma were investigated. Electrochemical measurements, thermodynamic calculations to predict the chemical reactions happened during the process, various surface analyses, and flotation experiments were carried out."

"Prior or simultaneous addition of ammonium sulphate can, not only enhance the activating effect of hydrosulphide ions on xanthate flotation of malachite but it can also eliminate possible detrimental or depressing effects of excess residual hydrosulphide . Use of relatively inexpensive ammonium sulphate appears to reduce the consumption of the much more expensive sulphidizing agent for optimal flotation recovery INTRODUCTIONOxidized copper minerals float poorly with conventional thiol-type collectors. This is believed to be due to the nonadherent character of the collector coating, which is readily re- moved by particle abrasion. Rosas and Polingr reported emulsion flotation seemed capable of resisting abrasion during the flotation of non-sulphide copper ores. It appears that the most common flotation technique for oxidized copper minerals comprises sulphidization with Na .S and subsequent treatment by sulphydryl collector. The principles of this method are available . Malghan recently reviewed the studies on the role of sodium sulphide in the flotation of oxidized copper, lead and zinc minerals.It is well known that in the sulphidized flotation of malachite, the activation process depends strongly on the concentration of the sulphidizing agent, i.e., insufficient sulphide gives poor recoveries because of inadequate sulphidization; excessive sulphide also causes poor recoveries due to the depressive effect of the residual hydro-sulphide ions in solution. A major difficulty in sulphidization, especially with a varying feed nature, is to establish and maintain the optimum sulphide concentration in solution. In plant practice, vigorous control of sodium sulphide is required and stepwise addition of the reagent is recommended to improve the efficiency of the process. Soto and Laskowskim have found that malachite, depressed by an excess of sulphide ions, can restore its floatability if air or oxygen is introduced to the pulp. They attributed this to the oxidation of the HS - ions on the surface of the mineral. Jones and Woodcockuvi showed that a sulphide ion selective electrode could be used to optimize the conditions (e.g . amount of hydrosulphide, sulphidization time, flotation time) more readily and precisely than existing methods in the flotation of oxidized copper ores."

The use of emulsion or slurry explosives as a matrix is an attempt to correct deficiencies on the basic ANFO while maintaining cost effectiveness.This paper will deal with four main topics.1. Relative performance and economics in various rock types.4: Current status in Canada and worldwide, and the expectations for future use.IntroductionANFO has been in use for roughly three decades and remains the explosive of choice where conditions are suitable. ANFO has not become the universal explosive - despite its undoubted superiority in cost effectiveness - because it has serious flaws as an explosive. The most serious of these flaws are the low density and absence of water resistance in ANFO. Low density implies a low concentration of explosive energy in a borehole. The amount of energy available can be increased by. adding an energetic material, generally aluminum, or by drilling more holes. Both solutions add considerably to the over-all costs. The absence of water resistance in ANFO is inherent and can only be overcome by changing the fundamental nature of the product. The history of research in the explosives industry since the advent of ANFO is mainly the story of the various attempts to overcome one or both of ANFO's shortcomings.Many technologies and products have been developed to compete against ANFO, among them slurries, emulsion s and the so-called Dense ANFOs (ANFO with an extra nitroalkane liquid sensitizer). None of them was cost-competitive with ANFO so their market penetration has been limited to wet holes or specialized applications. The exception to this result is Heavy ANFO. The aim here was to have the best of both worlds, the high density and water resistance of emulsions or slurries plus the low cost of ANFO. The concept is very simple. ANFO is about 50 % air, roughly 30% in the prills and 700,10 between the prills . The air in the prills provides the necessary sensitivity but the air between them is waste volume. If one fills this volume with a high density, waterproof product, the resultant mix will be denser and more water resistant than ANFO and with very little added cost. This basic concept was invented by B. Clay in the 1970s and is covered by Canadian Patent No. 1 115 959. The water resistance and/or density of the mix can be tailored by changing the emulsion level. Because Heavy ANFO is relatively inexpensive while providing good in-hole densities and water resistance, it can compete successfully against all other bulk products. It competes against ANFO and Al / ANFO by allowing pattern expansion and reducing over-all costs while it competes against emulsions and slurries on price."

"The main object of ore reserve classification is to assess the reliability of an ore reserve estimate. Because traditional classification schemes fail to provide a means of calculating this reliability, the terms 'proven "" 'probable' and 'possible ' ore were introduced as an attempt to qualify it.Geostatistics, on its part, allows the quantification of the precision of any ore estimate and thus appears as an appropriate tool for ore reserve classification.However, the problem of fixing quantitative boundaries for ore classes remains. In order to be meaningful, ore class limits based on the degree of reliability should be customized to the commodity, and the type and size of the deposit. In addition, the precision of an ore estimate will be affected by the cut-off grade and the size of selective mining units.IntroductionPrimarily, ore reserve classification should be seen as a communication tool between the geologist and the mining engineer on one hand and the management and policy maker on the other. By classifying ore reserves, the geologist tries to answer the very fundamental question: ""What quantity of metal is there in the ground and how sure am I that it really exists?""The difficult y of quantifying the degree of reliability of reserves has led to the creation of a large suite of terms and definitions, with almost every mining company having its own set of definition standards. As lower-grade deposits are brought into production, the margin of tolerable error in estimates of the grade and tonnage is becoming much narrower. Consequently, the need for unequivocal definition of the reliability of ore reserves is increasingly acute. Most of the generally accepted systems of classification, however, describe the reliability of reserves in qualitative, rather than quantitative, terms."

Eighty feet of overburden, thirty feet consisting of fine, water-bearing sands, was encountered during the construction of a shaft collar for Chimo Gold Mines Limited at its Louvicourt, Quebec, property. This paper describes the excavation and construction methods used on the project. Open-cut methods, a sheet pile cofferdam, chemical grouting and special blasting methods were used during excavation. Concrete placement was hampered in the lower portion by a heavy water flow, and aided in the upper portion by an unusual method of form bracing. Plant and • pum11ing facilities are also described.

"This paper describes the development of a dynamic model for a full- scale (64 tonnes/hr) grinding circuit consisting of an open-circuit rod mill feeding a ball mill operating in closed circuit. The object of constructing such a model is to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of potential control schemes. Model selection, data processing and parameter estimation are discussed, and static and dynamic results of simulations are presented. Conclusions are drawn with regard to the adequacy of the model for such studies, and likely limitations on control of such circuits.IntroductionThe model developed here is intended to represent the grinding behaviour of the grinding circuit at the Lake Dufault division of Falconbridge Copper Mines Ltd. This circuit has been fully described elsewhere. At the time of the work described, the ball mill discharge was fed to a four-cell flotation bank , the tailings of which are combined with the rod mill discharge in the cyclone feed pump sump. As the emphasis in this study is on grinding behaviour, and as only I per cent of cyclone feed material is removed in these cells, no attempt has been made to include flotation behaviour in the simulation. One effect of the presence of flotation cells in the grinding circuit is, however, to necessitate somewhat finer grinding than might otherwise be needed: this will have effects on mill parameters.The paper is organized as follows. First the selection of models is discussed, paying particular attention to the problem of selecting simple, yet adequate, flow models for the mills. Then data gathering is described. The method of deriving mill model parameters is explained, and the results presented. Mass balancing of cyclone data and the determination of cyclone model parameters are described. The linking of the models into a full simulation is outlined, and sta tic and dynamic results presented. Finally, the results are discussed and conclusions drawn ."

This study focusses on the production of micro-structured agglomerates with high porosity from iron (III)-hydroxide-containing materials as adsorbent. A fractal-like structure of the agglomerates was created through a two-stage agglomeration process. Developing porous structures was necessary to increase the adsorption capacity. Various materials were used for the agglomeration experiments: i) filter cake (dry matter content 23 to 27 wt.-%); ii) FerroSorp®DGµ, a product which is already being used commercially for various applications in water cleaning. These materials in the pristine state have different characteristics such as dry matter content and particle size distribution. The desired optimised agglomerates can be achieved with the help of additives or binders, respectively. Additionally, the agglomeration process parameters play a vital role. In order to produce agglomerates with high porosity, the process was carried out in two steps. Firstly, FerroSorp®DGµ (d90 < 30 µm) was agglomerated jointly with the aforementioned filter cake in an Eirich intensive mixer (particle size range 125 µm < d90 < 500 µm). The second agglomeration step post drying was carried out in a pelletisation disc or in an Eirich intensive mixer with the addition of polymeric binders (up to particle sizes ranging from 2 to 4 mm). Agglomerates were characterised both in short and long term loading tests using phosphate as model ion. Contact times were less than 10 min, similar to practical application in percolation columns, or more than 7 days, respectively. The results show that the agglomerates produced in the two-stage pelletisation process have more advantageous properties like better accessibility of the active sites obtained by specificly influencing the particle size distribution during the two-stage pelletisation process.
