"Existing environmental, health and safety regulations have forced pyrometallurgical facilities worldwide to drastically change some of their traditional methods of operation. In extreme cases, a number of facilities have been closed due to their inability to conform to these existing regulations. Tougher future legislation and government policy will lead to more stringent regulations and enforcement policies. The efficient control of smelter secondary emissions will, therefore, become critical to successful smelter operation.Much attention has been paid to the smelter primary process off-gas systems, including the development of new process designs to reduce the number of uncontrolled transfer operations. However, even the most modem smelter design requires control of its secondary contaminant sources, which mayor may not be directly related to the process operation.This paper discusses some of the potential secondary emissions encountered in many of the present process technologies. A few of the emission sources presented are only periodic in nature, such as those caused by maintenance procedures, but which have the capability of forcing smelter shut-down because of their direct impact on worker health and safety. The paper deals with a variety of topics relating to the efficient control, maintenance and monitoring of secondary emissions in copper, nickel, aluminum, magnesium and lead smelters, as well as in iron foundries and steel making facilities. Examples of the typical problems encountered in each of the above process operations are presented, including fume control at furnace tapping and slagging locations, metal transfer stations, tapping launders, and ladle transfer operations. The parameters for the most efficient design of fume capture systems, problems encountered with the handling and clean-up of certain collected emissions, and examples of successful solutions in particular operations are discussed."

Among the many interesting problems of the pre-Cambrian of the Canadian Shield is that of the origin of certain types of gneisses which are intimately associated with the granites on the one hand and with the metamorphic rocks of known sedimentary origin on the other. The observations recorded in this paper on the structure and composition of these ancient rocks found in a small part of northern Quebec may help to lead to a clearer understanding of the way in which they were formed and also constitute a contribution to the regional geology and petrography of a district for which little detailed information is available. The area considered is located near the Ashuapmuchuan, or Chamuchuan, river about 180 miles north-northwest of the city of Quebec, and therefore well within the Canadian Shield. Although most attention was devoted to the rocks along this river from the 57th to the 70th mile above its entrance into Lake St. John, a few observations on other localities to the north and northwest of that lake will be included. The field work was done in the summer of 1924 in cooperation with L. W. MacNaughton, E. S. Roberts, and B. M. Shaub, all of Cornell University. The party ascended the Ashuapmuchuan river by canoe and spent about a month near the mouth of Stacker, or Brochet, river, the outlet of the lake of the same name, returning by way of Mikoasas river. The writer wishes to express his obligation to his associates for their co-operation in the field and for their permission to publish the results. He is especially indebted to B. M. Nova Scotia has been mining and exporting industrial minerals for over two hundred years. As an industrial mineral producer, this province continues to rank as the number one gypsum mining and exporting region in North America. Mining of many other commodities is ongoing, supplying many local and export markets. In all, excluding aggregate producers, there are nineteen industrial mineral producers operating at thirty sites producing nine commodities including anhydrite, barite, clay and shale, dolomite, gypsum, limestone, salt, silica sand and stone (Fig. I). Numerous aggregate producing operations supply all the province's aggregate requirements and export some of these materials to other regions of Atlantic Canada and as far away as Bermuda (Fig. 2) . Production value of industrial mineral commodities in Nova Scotia for 1982 was $105 million , representing 39% of the total value for all mineral production for the year. Because of the general improvement in the economy, indications are that the 1983 value of production will be higher.

Katowice Coal Holding (KHW) is one of the largest coal companies in Europe. The company owns five coal mines with a daily output of around 60 000 tons of coal. In the Katowice city area, very good quality steam coal is extracted. The depth of mining varies between 400 and 1100 m and some of the mines rank amongst those most afflicted by methane in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with the methane hazard having a significant impact on production and safety. ?Myslowice-Wesola? mine, being a part of the Katowice Coal Holding is characterized by high methane and rockburst hazards. The mine is equipped with a modern surface drainage pumping station. At the mentioned mine, longwall 514 was selected for analysis of its methane emission. The longwall was extracting the thick seam 501 (over 4 m), at a depth of over 900 m, which was subject to high stress and high gas concentration conditions. At a distance of about 50 m above, seam 501 is covered by thin seam 416. The strata between these two seams are sandstone and mudstone layers. In the floor of seam 501, with a thin shale interlayer, is located seam 510, which is the thickest (over 10m) and richest coal seam in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. In longwall 514 and it?s vicinity, methane was the dominant risk. For this longwall three methods of classical gas drainage were carried out. At first, drainage was undertaken using long boreholes from a cross-cut at level 665 m, located far from the production panel. Later, it was performed using typical boreholes drilled from the ventilation gallery (tail gate road). Finally, it was undertaken using a degassing drift executed in the upper coal seam 416. All of these headings, ie. cross-cut level 665 m, the ventilation road and conveyor road in seam 501 and the degassing drift in seam 416, were equipped with media for drilling and proper drainage pipelines. Due to the high rockburst hazard and some problems with caving, several kinds of de-stressing and torpedo blasts were carried out in both coal seams and roof rocks. The subsequent analysis and experiments allowed the establishment of some general rules for carrying out degassing operations effectively. The effectiveness of a degassing drift was demonstrated. In some instances, the system allowed more than 70% of the total methane released to be captured and fed into pipelines. The aforementioned blasts had a marginal impact on methane emissions and the efficiency of degassing methods. Cyclic drilling and regular switching of boreholes in phase with the mining progress and working face advance were shown to be essential.

The disturbed natural rock mass tends to equilibrium state accompanying with non-equilibrium evolution process which has significant influence on the long-term stability of engineering structure. The deformation development in the non-equilibrium evolution is determined by two intrinsic processes, trend to equilibrium and damage development, which can be illustrated by evolution of excavated tunnel. Thus the creep and damage must be taken into account in study of non-equilibrium evolution process. Within Rice’s irreversible thermodynamics with internal state variable (ISV), the conjugate force function which equals to zero is a convex surface which divide the stress space into two parts, called equilibrium and nonequilibrium stress space respectively. The concept of effective stress of non-equilibrium has been proposed, in which the stress difference (d - d ) are the effective driving forces of non-equilibrium evolution process with hardening and damage effective. The formulations of inelastic strain rate and energy dissipation rate have been recast in the form of effective stresses. The inelastic complementary energy (ICE) is proposed to measure intensity of non-equilibrium evolution of material system. The specific equations of conjugated forces and kinetic equations of internal state variables are presented. The ICE and rate of energy dissipation are all calculated to be used to evaluate long-term stability of geo-engineering. The results show that rate of energy dissipation may be more convenience and flexible than ICE for internal state variable constitutive equation of rock mass.

Over the past two years, the construction industry has increasingly recognized the benefits and capabilities of building information modeling (BIM) for information integration, visualization and parametric design, reducing the duplication of work and complexity of interface integration, while significantly saving both time and cost. However, due to the variety of participants in engineering projects, the differences between data definition, data format, and data storage increase the difficulty of integrating data from diverse sources. Therefore, buildingSMART has developed a common data schema, called Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), that makes it possible to hold and exchange relevant data between different software applications, to increase the efficiency of BIM work and to ensure a consistent and high-quality output. This paper presents a novel methodology that assists in facilitating the import and export process for parametric BIM objects between heterogeneous BIM systems. This methodology is based on the IFC data schema and includes graphical and non-graphical description data. The objective is to retain the geometry, parameters, unit, texture and links of an object during exchange and sharing to ensure that data integrity is maintained. To sum up, this research addresses the issues of transferring parametric BIM objects between heterogeneous systems to increase data integrity and reduce transfer and integration times.

"In this study, the volatilization behaviour of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) from arsenicantimony bearing minerals such as tennantite (Cu12As4S13)/tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) in copper ore was investigated using a roasting process. Specifically, the thermal decomposition of tennantite and the arsenic volatilization were investigated under nitrogen and air atmosphere. The roasting experiments were performed at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1,200oC and different retention times using a laboratory electric furnace. The results indicated that over 95% volatilization was achieved at 700oC. On the other hand, when the temperature increased to 1,200oC, volatilization rate of Sb reached to 90%. Therefore, volatilization of Sb requires high temperature compared to As. It suggests that As and Sb can be separated using temperature difference. Selective removal of As is possible at 700oC, subsequently Sb can be recovered as a volatilized product by increasing the temperature to 1,200oC. Meanwhile, volatilization of Cu and Fe was not observed on these conditions. The content of As and Sb in the residues obtained from roasting at 700 and 1,200oC was less than 0.3 and 0.75 mass%, respectively. The Cu content in solid residue at 1,200oC increased to 34 mass%. The clean copper concentrate with lower amounts of arsenic and antimony was obtained from the process. INTRODUCTIONRecently, arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) contents in copper (Cu) concentrates are increasing year by year. Arsenic and antimony are present with Cu minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4), tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that associate with copper sulfides [chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and bornite (Cu5FeS4)]. They are normally concentrated by flotation and treated in copper smelters. However, treatment of copper concentrates containing high amounts of arsenic and antimony by a smelting process is difficult due to environmental implications of toxic arsenic and antimony. As demand for copper continues to grow, the need to source copper from several types of resources including those that contain high levels of As/Sb becomes necessary. Therefore, a novel processes for the treatment of As/Sb bearing Cu concentrates are required. Reviews on copper resources such as enargite, tennantite and tetrahedrite containing high amounts of arsenic and antimony are covered widely in literatures by many researchers (Padilla et al., 1998; Welham, 2001; Vinals et al., 2003; Guo & Yen, 2005; Balaž & Achimovicova, 2006a; Filippou et al., 2007; Mihajlovic et al., 2007; Lattanzi et al., 2008)."

"Nickel granules are produced for carbonylation by pouring a molten stream into a path of high pressure water. Granules and water are separated in dewatering bins. The overflow, which contains up to 0.1 weight percent solids, was initially cooled and recycled to the granulating step. However, the rate of buildup of these solids in the handling system was intolerable. A lamella thickener was installed to solve the problem by removing solids from the dewatering bin overflow. Its description, application and performance to date are discussed.The lamella thickener treats a slurry containing about 0.1% solids of which about 30 weight percent is less than 325 mesh. It recovers 80 to 90 percent of the input solids in an underflow slurry containing 90 weight percent solids. Since its installation the frequency of cleanout of the recycle water handling system has dropped from about once per month to about once or twice per-year."

"The storage of petroleum products on surface is associated with difficulties and limitations. Accordingly, a viable alternative is to excavate underground space in rock and provide a safe way for oil storage. Soft rocks such as salt domes provide good conditions from environmental and operational points of view. The potential for high-volume storage and low permeability are encouraging aspects for oil storage in salt domes. The complicated shape of oil storage caverns, the complicated behavior of salt rocks, and boundary conditions associated with large underground openings are important challenges in the design of oil storage caverns. The aim of this paper is to delve into the stability and deformation mechanisms of storage caverns created in salt domes. A parametric study of effect of the cavern size, orientation, and depth is carried out as a function of ground stress regime. The stress field and deformation mechanisms are calculated for each case aiming at providing design guideline.INTRODUCTIONOne of the most popular soft rock that is used for underground oil storage is salt rock (halite). Salt rock has particular characteristics which makes it suitable for oil storage. Salt rock has several advantages for oil storage, these are: high production rate, high degree of availability, short filling period, high level of safety and low permeability [1]. The low permeability is due to the fact that halite deforms in a plastic manner over a wide range of pressures, temperatures and rates of deformations. This property prevents joints or gaps opening up in the formation, thus preventing the escape of liquids and gases. The state of stresses around the cavern in salt domes depends on the depth of the cavern (initial stresses and rock mass temperatures are increasing with depth), the in-situ stress state within the rock mass, and the internal oil pressure in the cavern. Furthermore, the salt creep behavior and the cavern geometry are influencing stress redistributions during loading and unloading phases.Rock mass structure, cavern geometry, material behavior and cavern operation patterns require complex physical models to describe the load-bearing behavior of the geomechanical structure. The determination of stress, strain and deformation in the rock mass due to cavern construction and operation are complex problems which can be evaluated employing numerical tools such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) or Finite Difference Method (FDM). In this study, the finite difference method was used to evaluate the behavior of oil storage cavern in salt rock."

This study investigates the role of nitrogen gas injection in the dissolution rate of Si into liquid Al. A unique revolving liquid metal tank was used, with a capacity of 50 kg of liquid Al. Experiments without gas injection have shown that the dissolution of Si increases as the bath superheat and the tangential velocity of the liquid Al increase. When injecting nitrogen gas at flow rates between 0-5 lit/min in the vicinity of the solid Si, results so far clearly show greater dissolution. In addition, results on the role of the gas flow rate relative to the position of the nozzle are presented and analyzed.

"Activated carbon is used to recover gold in solution from various gold circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes; however, the characteristics and durability of the activated carbon can vary. Handling this medium poses challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuit discharge. Additionally, adsorbed gold on carbon fines can be lost to the discharge. The studies in this paper aim to standardize laboratory methods for testing activated carbon qualities specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, platelet content, wet attrition resistance, gold kinetics, and gold loading. Toutefois, les caractéristiques et la durabilité du charbon actif varient. La manipulation de ce milieu pose des problèmes dès lors que se produisent des pertes de carbone à grain fin dans la décharge des circuits CIP, CIC et CIL. Par ailleurs, l’or adsorbé sur les fines de charbon peut se perdre durant la décharge. Les études réalisées dans le cadre de cet article visent à normaliser les méthodes de laboratoire pour tester les qualités du charbon actif spécifiques au secteur de l’exploitation aurifère. L’étude portait sur la composition granulométrique, la teneur des plaquettes, la résistance au frottement humide, la cinétique de l’or et l’adsorption de l’or, à savoir la capacité du charbon actif à adsorber l’or sur une période spécifique. Les résultats ont montré qu’un test de frottement de 96 heures et un test d’adsorption de l’or constituaient le fondement d’un classement des échantillons de carbone du point de vue économique en vue de trouver l’échantillon générant le meilleur rendement des usines. ¦ MOTS CLÉS charbon actif, dureté de la batée des billes de carbone, évaluation du carbone, perte de fines de charbon, renouvellement du carbone, résistance au carbone INTRODUCTION The use of activated carbon for gold extraction is among the most common processes in modern gold-milling plants. Although gold losses are inevitable in the milling process, operators often focus on reducing gold loss to tailings. One focus area that is important in gold recovery is optimizing the use of activated carbon and examining potential changes to realize improved economics for carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes. Granular activated carbon (Figure 1) is widely used for gold extraction from slurries containing gold-cyanide complexes. This activated carbon—produced from charred coconut shells—is well suited because of its adsorption kinetics, gold-loading capacity, attrition resistance, and ability to be reactivated. The extraction process using activated carbon technology involves adsorbing gold from an aqueous leachate; the gold is dissolved using a cyanide salt and consequently a dicyanoaurate(I) ion (Au(CN)2–) is formed, as noted in equation 1."

The strength of green and sintered pellets during reduction under various conditions in a laboratory kiln has been investigated. Equipment and test methods are described, together with the results obtained. The strength of sintered pellets drops sharply when the reduction starts, and goes through a minimum at the 70 per cent oxidation level. At more advanced reduction, the strength increases with increasing metallization. Successful use of green pellets as kiln feed requires that more attention be paid to the pellet preparation than is necessary when producing pellets for separate sintering. In particular, the ores have to be ground to a greater fineness. The initial strength of green pellets is low. Below the 70 per cent oxidation level, however, the strength of these pellets is about the same as the strength of sintered ones. Additions of such materials as silica, limestone and anthracite coal; within reasonable limits, affect the strength only slightly.

"Mechanical properties and microstructure of an Al-4.7Cu-0.74Mg-0.51Si-0.48Mn-0.10Cr-0.09Ti-0.02Fe (wt. %) alloy subjected to various thermomechanical processing (TMP) have been investigated and compared to conventional ageing at 170°C (designated T6). Three TMP routes involving cold deformation of solution treated samples were tested. These were (i) 3%-stretching (T8-3%), (ii) equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to true strain (e) of ~1 (T8-1) and (iii) ECAP to e~2 (T8-2), all with subsequent ageing at 170°C for 0-96 h. At peak age conditions, both yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture decreased for the T8-3% state as compared to the T6 condition. Intermediate ECAP (T8-1 and T8-2) lead to significant increase in maximum yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture. The changes in mechanical properties were related to microstructure evolution, encompassing changes in grain sizes, dislocation densities, precipitate morphology and phase fractions, which were characterised using transmission electron microscopy. Relations between TMP, precipitation behavior and contributions to different strengthening mechanisms are evaluated.INTRODUCTION Al-Cu-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as structural materials in aerospace industry due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance. These properties are largely due to the formation of a large number of nano-sized metastable precipitates during artificial ageing (Polmear, 2006; Eskin, 2003; Gazizov, Dubina, Zhemchuzhnikova, & Kaibyshev, 2015). "In efforts to improve dust control during deep cut continuous mining a supplemental atomizing spray system, mounted on 14CM15 continuous miner, has been designed and successfully implemented in a U.S. coal mine. The mine is 2.1 m (7-ft) high and uses a blowing curtain face ventilation system with 1.1 m (3.5-ft) curtain offset from the rib. The face ventilation design parameters were set to 9.4 m3/s (20,000-cfm); 4.2 m3/s (9,000-cfm) line curtain flow rate, and 3.8 m3/s (8,000-cfm) scrubber capacity. The performed in-mine measurements, before and after the implementation of the atomizing spray system, showed a significant decrease in the respirable dust levels at the operator place as well as at the return. The paper describes the supplemental water spray system design and performance supported by three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and in-mine test data.INTRODUCTIONThe work on this project have started in 2015 with a study of the conventionally applied face ventilation layouts. The specific behaviour of the face ventilation system have been analyzed trough in-mine measurements and computer modeling of typical cut scenarios. An computer modeling methodology have been developed for estimation the respirable dust concentration (RDC) using tracer gas to RDC contour mapping, calibrated by a single point value, provided by in-mine measurement. Utilizing the results of this study the engineering staff of the mine designed and implemented a supplemental atomizing spray system to improve the dust control during the deep cut continuous mining. Today the atomized spray system is successfully applied demonstrating steady performance and a significant decrease in respirable dust concentration on the working places of the continuous miner (CM) and coal transporters (CT) operators as well as at the return air stream. Information about the applied type of spray nozzles provided by other researchers (Cheng, 1973; Dick et al., 1996; Organiscak & Page, 1998; Pollock & Organiscak, 2007) and spray system manufacturers (Spraying System Co, 2011–2018; Steinen Mfg., 2016) have been used in this project. CFD code and simulation approach validated in a study conducted in 2000-2014 have been applied (Turner et al., 2002; Wala et al., 2004, 2007; Petrov, 2014)."

"Extensive screening revealed a seaweed (alga) biomass type which in its non-living state possesses a very high cobalt sequestering capacity comparable to that of activated carbon and the ion-exchange resin currently used in the cobalt production process. Performance of the new bio-sorbent material was studied by examining its equilibrium metal uptake isotherms generated under different solution conditions such as initial cobalt concentration pH, temperature, and the presence of selected cations and anions. The rate of cobalt uptake was determined, which is a crucial parameter for recovery process design. Almost all cobalt sorbed can also be desorbed with a solution of CaCI2. The bio-sorbent material can be used repeatedly in the sorption-desorption cobalt concentration process. IntroductionIt has been well documented that certain types of microbial biomass, living or non-living, possess a high potential to sequester and accumulate inorganic ions present in aqueous solutions. Metal concentration by microbial biomass from a solution is termed bio-sorption. This phenomenon is quite complex and includes adsorption of metals onto the surface of a microorganism and/or into the cellular structure in combination with ion-exchange, complexation, and/or micro-precipitation. Bio-sorption is generally considered to be a rapid physical/chemical process. The cell wall structure is porous and allows metal ions, as well as large organic nutrient molecules, to pass freely through. Polysaccharides of the cell wall could provide binding amino, carboxyl, phosphate and sulphate groups. In addition to these functional binding groups, polysaccharides often have ion-exchange properties. Sometimes, bivalent cations, such as Ca2+ or Mg2+, help the formation of ionic bond bridges between the negatively charged cell surfaces and positively charged cations in the solution, Proteins in the cell wall could offer functional groups and also offer peptide bonds to bind ions. Interactions between metal and the cell wall components are responsible for the sequestering of metals by way of bio-sorption. Many metals feature a complex solution chemistry and it is not always possible to determine what ionic species are actually present in the solution. The equilibria involved are dependent on pH, concentration, the anions present and other factors. The transport system for the ions are sometimes dependent on both temperature and energy. Biosorbent material could also be regenerated for multiple reuse."

North American Palladium is the owner/operator of the Lac des Iles mine located 115 km north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The mine has produced an average of 65,000 ounces of palladium since 1994. Lac des Iles is currently undergoing the first phase of a major expansion that will increase ore production from 2,400 tons per day to 15,000 tons per day. A future expansion is being contemplated for 30,000 tons per day. The current expansion will increase palladium output to 250,000 ounces per year. The mine plan for the ultimate pit results in an excavation 1 km long by 800 m wide and over 450 m deep. This makes the ultimate pit at Lac des Iles one of the ten deepest open pits in the world, and the largest in Canada. This paper outlines the geotechnical data collection and design methodology for the ultimate open pit at Lac des Iles.

Joining of superalloy Inconel 61 7 with a foil interlayer using transient liquid phase bonding (TLP) technique was studied. Inconel 617 is a solid solution, Ni - Cr - Co- Mo alloy with an exceptional composition of high temperature strength, oxidation, carburization resistance and thermal stability. In this investigation, two bonding temperatures, 1065°C and 1150°C, and two interlayer thicknesses with joining times varying from 5 minutes to 24 hours were employed. Experiments were carried out using nickel base interlayer (A WS BNi-3) with boron as the melting point depressant (MPD) element. Joints were characterized using optical microscopy, SEM, FEG-SEM, EBSD, XRD and microhardness. The results indicated that the rate of elimination of the liquid phase with increasing the bonding temperature, holding time and decreasing the thickness of the interlayer increased. The main precipitates in the diffusion layer had platelike and blocky morphologies for both bonding temperatures and all holding times.

"There are more than thirty-five deposits or occurrences of celestite in Canada, chiefly in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and British Columbia. Deposits of economic interest are the Lake Enon and MacRae deposits in the Loch Lomond district of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Two Cape Breton deposits were operated from 1969 to 1976 by Kaiser Celestite Mining Limited, which supplied an upgraded celestite concentrate to an associated strontium carbonate plant at Point Edward, near Sydney.The MacRae deposit is of current interest because of its possible development for strontium carbonate production using the ""black ash"" process. This process involves chemical leaching, rotary kiln calcining with petroleum coke, washing and treatment with carbon dioxide.Celestite is the basic material used in the manufacture of strontium chemicals, principally strontium oxide, carbonate, nitrate, chromate, chlorate, chloride, sulphide and phosphate. Strontium chemicals, in turn, are used in the manufacture of glass and ceramics, in pyrotechnic devices, in the production of strontium metal and in other metallurgical applications. Recently, strontium ferrites have been introduced into permanent ceramic magnets."

The major problem encountered in the casting of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys is the stoppage of flow below the rigidity level of solid fraction. In this study, the flow stoppage mechanism was studied using three Al-Si alloys with 14%, 18% and 22% silicon. The horizontal foam patterns used were 12.50 mm (0.50 inch) wide with two section thicknesses 12.50 mm (0.50 inch) and 6.25 mm (0.25 inch) with a common sprue. The primary silicon distribution along the length of the casting was studied to determine the mechanism of flow stoppage. It was found that the surface of the flow tip of Al-14%Si alloy was smooth with a few undulations. As the silicon level increased, undulations at the flow tip increased. The number and size of undulations were maximum for the Al-22%Si alloy. Microstructural analysis using optical image analyzer revealed that the flow tip consisted mainly of eutectic silicon in the aluminum matrix and a few primary silicon crystals (PSC). The PSC were in the interlocked condition few centimeters behind the flow tip. It was also found that the gap between the flow tip and the PSC concentrated area increased with an increase in silicon level. Phase characterization was done with SEM-EDX to identify the precipitating phases.

Both the 8 and A-C ore zones of the Heath Steele Mine contain extensive areas of brecciated ore. This texturally distinct ore type has been tentatively defined as a fragmental or conglomerate massive sulphide. It consists of subangular and round fragments of pyrite up to 30 em in diameter, smaller quartz clasts and chloritized, mineralized, lithic fragments in a faintly banded matrix of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite is concentrated in the pressure shadows of the fragments and appears to reflect remobilization and recrystallization during a deformation which postdates the formation of the clasts. A generally conformable relationship with the underlying banded pyrite-sphalerite ore, discordancy with the host banded argillites, spatial distribution and similarity to Kuroko ores suggest that the fragmental ore is of primary origin and that breccia formation is probably due to soft-sediment slumping or sliding initiated by volcanic explosions, as hypothesized for similar massive sulphides in various Japanese mines. It is nevertheless recognized that certain structural features in some clasts may result from deformation preceding the formation of the breccia, and at this stage a tectonic origin cannot be completely eliminated.
