"The southern Abitibi Belt is the major source of gold in Quebec. Although the northern part of the belt is quickly being developed, the area under study will not be downgraded in the near future because it still contains more than 75% of the known reserves in the belt.Gold is found in a variety of geological environments which are part of a small number of distinct structural patterns. For the exploration geologist, outlining such patterns might be easier and more productive than defining, when it is possible, the exact genetic nature of the gold mineralization.Exploring in the right place has always been one of the main concerns of explorationists. This paper briefly describes the various favourable geological settings, and outlines areas, types of structure and lithologies of high potential for gold exploration in the southern Abitibi Belt.IntroductionThe southern part of the Abitibi Belt is a profilic mining area for precious and base metals (Lulin 1990). Although mineralizing processes and controls of polymetallic deposits are well known and understood (Lydon 1984), almost every gold occurrence is a unique case and numerous models have been proposed (Roberts 1987; Hodgson and McGeehan 1982; Hodgson 1990).This study does not define new genetic models for the formation of gold deposits, neither is it meant to elaborate on the existing ones. A genetic approach, is by definition, theoretical and, to some extent, universal. It helps geologists define types of targets and exploration tools but does not outline or quantify target areas. To tentatively summarize the complexity of a genetic approach, a brief discussion on the various genetic models in vogue in Abitibi and the problems related to their use in exploration can be found at the end of this paper."

"Cable TV networks are extensively used throughout Canada for TV signal distribution. Mobile/portable radio communications are also used extensively throughout all sectors of industry. There are numerous manufacturer supplying these industries with a wide variety of equipment and accessories.IAL's underground radio communications system combines the techniques of cable TV and mobile radio to produce a flexible communications system with most of the advantages of both systems. Standard off-the-shelf mobile, portable, base-station and repeater equipment can be used. The equipment may need modification to be customized to particular end user requirements, but does not require a complete new unit redesign. Likewise, the cable TV distribution equipment is off the-shelf, with some items requiring modification for underground system application.Radio communications can be provided wherever the cable system is extended. Where traffic or type of activity warrants it, multiple radio channels can be provided on the same cable. Certain radio channels could also be used with data channels for control or supervision of remote equipment or environmental conditions. In addition, the same cable can be used to distribute or monitor signals from remote TV cameras in selected or dangerous areas. The system can be interfaced to a telephone system, if required, to provide extended communications to above-ground workshops, offices, medical stations or even hospitals and other emergency services.IntroductionReliable communications among personnel throughout an underground mine area have long been the dream and goal of various mine operations personnel. "Environmental concerns have recently been growing over the disposal of reactive desulphurizing slag. Consequently, increased pressure has been placed on the foundry industry to reduce the reactivity of this slag.To address this problem, Cyanamid has developed a new product which significantly reduces the calcium carbide content of the desulphurizing slag. Testing equipment and procedures have also been developed to evaluate both the existing levels of carbide in the slag and the decreased levels which are achieved with this new material.The development and use of this engineered carbide desulphurizer has made possible significant environmental and efficiency improvements in the field of calcium carbide desulphurizing. Consequently, the lifespan of calcium carbide in ductile iron desulphurization has been increased, as have the benefits of its use in the foundry industry. IntroductionIn the production of ductile iron, calcium carbide has long been used for hot metal desulphurization external to the cupola. Its cost effectiveness, reliability and ease of use have traditionally made it the desulphurizer of choice for a great majority of ductile operations. Recently however, environmental concerns have been raised regarding the quantity of calcium carbide remaining in the slag after desulphurizing. Analysis has shown that as much as 25070 of the weight of the slag may contain active carbide. "A major Canadian chromite deposit at Bird River, Manitoba is one of the largest known chromite reserves in North America but it exhibits low chromium contents and low chromium to iron ratios. Commercial beneficiation techniques permit these ores to be upgraded to concentrations which, however, remain inferior to most other ores and concentrates used worldwide f or production of high-carbon ferrochromium. Analyses for reduction of low-grade concentrates by submerged-arc electrofurnace techniques predict chromium contents between 45.9% and 51% for a high-carbon ferrochromium alloy. Relatively high over-all chromium recoveries between 79.5% and 91. 1% can be achieved. Alloy compositions for Cr, Fe, C and Si are determined for various burdens with low-grade concentrates. Consumption data per ton contained chromium are obtained for electric power, coke, concentrate, quartzite and limestone. The data are compared with those of high-carbon ferrochromium producers in South Africa. Economic aspects are discussed and compared with a South African reference study.IntroductionThe present ferrochromium demand in the western world is estimated at approximately 1.7 Mt with a consumption of approximately 0.36 Mt in the U.S.III and 0.03 Mt in Canada'-', A low estimate of the installed production capacity for ferrochromium in the non -communist world is 2.4 Mt. This production capacity of ferrochromium by far exceeds the demand, which is also evident from the fact that no shortage in supply of ferrochromium to the world markets was encountered in the past. Supply-demand comparisons therefore suggest that in the foreseeable future no new chromite or chromium producers should enter the world markets unless superior chromites or superior technologies are successful in competing with existing producers. Neither one of these conditions exist presently in Ca nada or the U.S., although essentially no ferrochromium is produced and no chromite is mined in these countries at the present time."

"A growing public awareness of work-related diseases such as pneumoconiosis and the impact of this awareness on legislative bodies and on the skilled labour market are reasons why the Canadian mining industry must consider dust control of top-drawer importance. Measurements and standards related to the hazard are necessary to control a dust situation and to avoid excessive risk. The author discusses some of the methods of measurement, standards proposed and terminology used in this developing technology. The purpose primarily is to give a better understanding of the basic advances achieved by those who have applied current knowledge with a measure of success."

"Fluorspar mining occurred in the St. Lawrence area from the 1930s until the mid 1980s. In 2013, CFI discovered a new ore body, the AGS vein, which proved amenable to more economic open pit mining methods. A new mill was designed to produce 200,000 tonnes per year of high quality, acid-grade fluorspar concentrate. The simple mill flowsheet includes crushing, dense medium separation (DMS), grinding, sulphide flotation, pulp thickening, fluorite flotation, thickening, and concentrate filtration. The type of flotation cell used is being installed for the first time in North America. Site clearing commenced in the spring of 2016, followed by mill building erection completed by the fall of the same year. Civil and mechanical installation as well as site-wide construction was completed by the end of September 2017. Commissioning commenced, and at the time of paper submission mill production is on track to ramp up to full capacity by the beginning of 2018. This paper will focus on the use of fluorine NMR analysis applied to fluorite and the development of on-stream analysis, flotation cell selection and the decision to install the new cells, and the water control program designed to maintain process control with the least possible environmental impact.HISTORY St. Lawrence is located on the south-eastern coast of the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador. The first occurrence of fluorspar in the St. Lawrence area was recorded in 1843 by British geologist J.B. Jukes (DNR 2010). Fluorspar was likely extracted in small quantities prior, however commercial fluorspar mining did not commence until 1933 at the Black Duck Mine. The Black Duck Mine operation processed ore by washing and screening – acid-grade was hand-picked from the oversize, the undersize was sold as a lower grade product. The Black Duck Mine was closed in 1941 (Wilson 2010). The American Fluorspar Limited (New Fluor) commenced operations on the Director vein in 1936, and was bought by Alcan in 1942 (Cooper 2012). Alcan also developed the Iron Springs as well as the Tarefare deposits. The Black Duck Mine mill had closed, and a new mill was built. This new mill crushed the ore prior to dense medium separation, the sinks of which were sent to Quebec for use in Alcan’s aluminum smelter (CFI 2016). Alcan shut down it’s mining operations in 1977 due to the dropping price of fluorspar as well as labour disputes. In 1986, the British-based Minworth Limited began producing ore from underground at Blue Beach North and Blue Beach South, as well as from open pits at Tarefare and Director veins (Cooper 2012). A new mill was built by Minworth in order to process the ore using flotation to produce an acid-grade concentrate. The low price of fluorspar caused Minworth to shut down operations in 1990. Whilst exploration has been ongoing, no mining had occurred in the area since 1990."

The production of single crystal (SX) turbine blades represents the current stateof- the-art in Ni-based superalloy design. With complex casting processes and alloy composition modifications, SX superalloys exhibit superior high temperature mechanical properties to their polycrystalline counterparts. Stresses and plastic deformation can occur in SX nickel-base superalloy engine components at various stages during their manufacture and use. For examples, stresses are created during initial solidification and also during solid state processing such as shot peening, grit blasting, blending, electrodischarge machining and welding. Stresses may also be created during service due to random events such as foreign object impacts. Subsequent exposure of SX to high temperatures during solution heat treatment and brazing repair can result in recrystallization which has been shown to be detrimental to both creep rupture strength and fatigue performance of the components. It is therefore the objective of this paper to understand the recrystallization behavior of two SX superalloys, PWA 1484 and 1483, subjected to pre-stressing and subsequent heat treatments.

"In July 2004 workers at the ABI Smelter in Bécancour (Quebec, Canada) went on strike. Contingency plan were ready to face the situation and plan was done to operate one potline out of three. Two lines were stopped; keeping in mind the restart on cold metal after the strike was over. The subject to be presented and shared includes a summary of work organization including training, schedule of restart, pot cleaning, pot preparation, crash start method, follow up after crash start, safety and environment. This major project has been a very big challenge. It shows that people involvement is a must and the key success. It is then true to say : ""People who believe in success will work and act in order to get there"" and ""People who don't believe in success will act in such a way to fail"" Then both will prove they were right to think their own way ! Sharing such experience can be interesting because it's a true story and people like true stories."

Several large open pit mines are facing the challenge to design and plan an underground transition to sustain the long term future of their operations. The desired underground method is Block Cave since its natural high productivity and low operating cost that could compete against the open pit cost to mine the final open pit pushbacks. It has been found at several operations where this transition is taking place that the pit limit at which transition is performed is rather deep. This aims to think that perhaps several transition projects have started late in the life of an operation producing an over stress in the transition project and reducing the flexibility in the design of the overall infrastructure and a substantial lost in the complete project NPV. Traditionally the approach to plan open pit underground transition consists of sequentially deciding the final pit using a Lerchs and Grossman type of optimization to find the overall maximum pit shell and then running block cave simulations to find the best footprint for the underground option. The research summarized in this paper is related to the development of an integer linear programming model that aims to compute simultaneously the maximum NPV of the combined option final limit open pit and block cave underground footprint. The model has been tested using two large block models representing two of the current operations in the process of transiting from open pit to underground operations. Finally, the integrated open pit underground transition model is going to be compared to the traditional sequential approach in order to define which method achieves the best NPV. The paper illustrates both case studies in depth.

"One of the most important phases in Canada's relatively rapid development of its metal mining and refining industries was launched in 1928 when the directors of Noranda Mines Limited decided to establish an electrolytic copper refinery ""somewhere in Eastern Canada”. Noranda's president, J.Y. Murdoch, had already evolved the company's ""mine to market"" policy and was determined to prove the economic feasibility of refining Noranda copper in Canada. The time appeared to be ripe as buoyant business conditions continued into 1929. In addition, proven ore reserves at the Horne Mine in northwest Quebec had virtually tripled and the price of copper had reached a healthy 15 cents per pound. Letters Patent incorporating the company bearing the date February 6, 1929 had been granted by the Secretary of State in accordance with an application that specified a capital structure of $2 million divided into 20 000 shares with a value of $100 each. Noranda assumed 70% of the original investment in the proposed refinery, while the Nicholas Copper Company of New York (which later became Phelps Dodge Corporation) and British Metal Corporation Ltd. of London, England, each were responsible for 15%. Nicholas Copper Company agreed to supply the design and to supervise the construction of the refinery and British Metal Corporation would act as sales agent and market the refinery's products."

In this study, the statistical design of experiments (DOE) was applied to study and regulate the properties of near-eutectic Al-11%Si alloys. Develop regression equations for such response variables as hardness, yield stress, ultimate tensile stress, percent elongation, total cutting force, cutting power, and tool life together with other factors which, include the percentage composition of the alloying elements, and the requisite modification (Sr) level. These equations may be analyzed quantitatively to acquire an understating of the effects which the main variables and their interactions may have on the mechanical behaviour and the machinability of the alloy under investigation. The results reveal that increasing the levels of Cu and Fe content results in an increase in hardness, yield stress, and ultimate tensile strength in both modified and non-modified alloys. On the other hand, both Cu and Fe appear to affect the percentage elongation adversely, whereas the Sr-level has a positive effect on this parameter. It was found that Sr-levels have the most significant effect on the cutting forces and cutting power followed by the content in Fe and Cu. The results also reveal that the interaction coefficients of these variables have a significant effect on tool life compared to the main independent variables. This fact may be attributed to the formation of complex insoluble phases between Cu, Fe, Si, and Al as investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) attached to an EDX analysis system. The accuracy of the regression equations in predicting the expected properties has been verified by carrying out random experiments in the range of variation of these variables.

"The Dollard oil field in southwestern Saskatchewan is a stratigraphic trap of irregular shaped perimeter. The reservoir is a low-angle monoclinal structure with a dip of approximately 100 feet in 5 miles from west to east across the long axis of the reservoir. Production of. 23° API gravity crude is obtained from a Jurassic sand referred to as the J-2-A, at an approximate depth of 4,500 feet. Reservoir studies and fluid analyses revealed that the crude is highly undersaturated, having a solution GOR of approximately 130 cubic feet of gas per barrel, that the reservoir has no definable water table, and that it appears to be of a closed-boundary type. Oil production was marked by a rapid pressure decline and it was soon evident that the greatest ultimate recovery would be best obtained if the natural driving energy of the reservoir were augmented by some artificial energy source. In support of a pressure maintenance programme, studies were conducted on flood-pot recoveries of large-diameter cores, and a potentiometric model study of the field was made. These studies indicated that a successful water flood would be obtained. The Dollard field was unitized in 1955 and pressure maintenance started in March 1956."

THE Eustis concentrator is located about nine miles southwest of Sherbrooke, on the main line of the Quebec Central railway. The concentrator is served by a side track parallel to the main line, and all supplies for both the mine and mill are delivered at the mill yards. The concentrator treats 250 tons of copper-iron ore daily by preferential flotation, whereby, first, the copper sulphides are floated and the iron pyrite is depressed, and, second, the iron pyrite is reactivated and floated, resulting in an iron pyrite concentrate and tailing, the latter going to waste. During 1934, 71,709 tons of ore were treated, averaging 3.712 per cent copper and 32.1 percent iron, with a small amount of silver and a trace of gold. The recovery was 93.77 percent of the copper, and 70.43 percent of the iron as iron concentrate. The copper concentrate produced averaged 25.623 percent copper and the iron-pyrite concentrate averaged 42.13 percent iron and 49.173 percent sulphur. HISTORY The first mill at the Eustis mine was built in 1904 (1). For a few years previous to this rime, some jigs had been operated to concentrate the fines from the mine, the coarse ore being hand-sorted. Both the fines and sorted lump ore were shipped to acid plants. The building of the mill was based on test work carried out by Professor Robert H. Richards at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The method of concentration consisted in careful classification in a Richards classifier, which made six different sized products. These products went to Wilfley tables, where a concentrate, middling, and tailing were made. The middling was returned to the rolls. Crushing was done by a jaw crusher and two sets of rolls, resulting in a screen size of about five-mesh.

MR. J. F. MYERS, Consulting J3eneficiation Engineer, Greenwich, Conn.: In the written discussion contributed by Mr. F. C. Bond in item ( 2) (page 515), speaiking about the significance of the ratio of mill diameter to the make-up ball diameter, he states: "When this ratio exceeds 100 the power and capacity of the mill are de-creased"; and the paragraph ends with a reference to the 30 per cent ball volume "with some de-crease in mill capacity". I believe this broad statement is incorrect. When we are dealing with a non-cataracting mill, pre-ceded by a good rod mill, there is a slight increase in capacity, but the power does drop. The second point that I consider needs consideration is Mr. Bond's item (8), Proper Mill Speed (page 516). This paragraph should be qualified to cover single-stage mills only. It does not apply where a rod mill is followed by a non-cataracting ball mill. The statement as is, with no qualification, gives an erroneous idea of proper mill speeds.

"Uncertainty is an important feature of many investments, but it is especially important for mineral properties. Mine properties often entail large investments and fixed commitments. Managers in the mining industry often view price uncertainty as undesirable, due to the possibility that the price of the mined commodity will fall to a level that prevents the firm from recovering its investment and fixed costs. This paper identifies pitfalls in conventional valuation methods and outlines a new approach to valuation based on option pricing theory and dynamic programming. In the process, it identifies generic strategies for organizing mine production in ways that allow the owner to benefit from the uncertainty in mineral prices. IntroductionRisk is pervasive in the mining industry. The operation and maintenance of a mine may involve high, and unavoidable, fixed costs. A mine owner can only begin to recover these fixed costs if the price of the mined commodity is greater than the incremental cost of production. But the prices of many minerals are extremely volatile. The price volatility of copper has been significantly higher than the price volatility of a typical stock, for example. A mine owner cannot be sure that the price of the mineral product will remain high long enough for the firm to recover its capital and fixed costs.Mine owners are able to minimize their losses during periods when the output price is below the incremental cost of production by temporarily closing operations. During these periods they incur only fixed costs. While shut-downs help minimize losses, the y do not help the firm recover its initial investment. If output prices remain low long enough, the fixed costs and original investment may never be recovered. High fixed costs, therefore, lead to substantial downside risk."

The JORC and NI43-101 codes impose that mineralized material has a reasonable prospect of economical extraction to be classified as Mineral Resource. For deposits close to surface and amenable to open pit mining, it is easy to show reasonable prospect of economic extraction running a Lerch-Grossman optimization. The Lerch-Grossman pit provides a transparent and repeatable way of separating the Mineral Resource (within the pit) from the remainder of the mineral inventory (outside the pit). Deposits amenable to underground mining are more challenging because of the variety of the underground methods. AMEC developed a stand-alone software package that outlines the material which has reasonable prospect of economic extraction for open stoping, block caving, sublevel caving and room and pillar. The software takes a block model file in ASCII and exports a 3D surface outlining the part of the mineralization that has a reasonable prospect of economic extraction, and which the Qualified Person can smooth out manually if required.

Bullmoose Operating Corporation will be the manager and operator of the project.This paper will broadly cover the history and exploration work on the property, the geology, open-pit mining plans and equipment, the preparation plant flowsheet from breaker station to clean coal silo, the 35 km highway truck haul, the railroad loadout system, manpower requirements, construction progress, approvals and permits, and general financial arrangements.IntroductionThe Bullmoose Mine Project"" is located about 87 road kilometres south of Chetwynd, B.C. and consists of an open-pit coal mine, a plant facility in the Bullmoose Creek valley below the mine, and a separate rail loadout facility on the British Columbia Railway Branchline near the new town of Tumbler Ridge some 35 road km to the east.The plant will be capable of producing a total of 2.3 million tonnes per year (mty) of washed metallurgical and thermal coal. Long-term metallurgical coal contracts for high quality, medium volatile, bituminous coal have been signed with nine Japanese buyers for 1.7 mty, and the balance of 0.6 mty will be thermal coal production.Plant construction began in the spring of 1982, and in May 1983, preproduction waste and overburden removal in the mine will commence. The plant should be fully operational by December 1983, and first vessel loading at the Ridley Island port is scheduled for January 1984."

"In this period of improved metal prices and reported profits, valuable lessons should be recalled from the 1970s when a similar cycle lured the federal and provincial governments into thinking that they could grab bigger pieces of the pie without harming the minerals industry. It is hoped that the current policy makers will have learned from the lessons of the seventies, and will realize that mining companies need to keep a reasonable share of profits realized during the good years in order to prepare for the inevitable downturn in the cycle.INTRODUCTION"", «. We have made clear to industry that super profits... will no longer be tolerated "".With that assertion, the Honourable David Barrett , Premier and Minister of Finance of the Province of British Columbia, announced the introduction of a new mining tax regime in his February 17, 1974 bud get papers . British Columbia producers would face a basic royalty and a royalty on so-called ""super profits"", resulting in some instances in tax rates exceeding 100070 of pre-tax profits.The ball started to roll. Mining tax changes knew no political or geo graphical boundary. On April 9, 1974, Ontario's Treasurer John White stated in his budget speech:""Increased demand by major industrialized countries has resulted in sharply higher metals prices and substantial wind fall gains for the mining industry in Ontario. With the prospective demand for minerals likely to sustain current price trends into the future, it is only fair that we secure for the people a higher return from our natural resources""."

In this study, homogeneous (unseeded) precipitation of nesquehonite (MgCO3.3H20) by the reaction of MgC12 with (NH4)2CO3 in supersaturated solutions at 30 °C was investigated. Factors which influence the precipitation of MgCO3.3H20, such as initial concentration, temperature, stirring speed, titration speed, equilibration time, have been studied. SEM images show that the initial concentration and titration speed have significant effect on nesquehonite's crystal morphology and particle size. In addition, stirring speed and equilibration time also have some influence on its properties. With the optimization of operating conditions, the crystals can grow up to a length of about 40µm and a width of 5µm, indicating good filtration properties. High purity nesquehonite obtained in this study was calcined to produce highly pure MgO at 800 °C as shown by XRD results. The novel process may be used to separate Mg and Li from high Mg/Li ratio brines in Qinghai, China.
