"The Outokumpu Flash Smelting Process was put into commercial operation in 1949. The original process was based on the use of preheated air. The adoption of oxygen enrichment of the flash smelting process air in 1971 was a crucial improvement, especially for smelter capacity. Oxygen use according to the Outokumpu method means selection of the most suitable oxygen content for the process air on the basis of the concentrate composition, capacity and matte grade. The furnace is not bound to only one fixed degree of process air oxygen enrichment; the oxygen content may vary from 21% to 100%.The degree of oxygen enrichment and the matte grade are the most important process parameters in reducing the operating costs of the whole system, including smelting, converting and acid production. Raising the matte grade allows more efficient use of the reaction heat in the smelting stage. Sulphur is recovered in a high-strength, constant-flow gas stream. The blowing time in the converters is reduced considerably.Oxygen enrichment and high matte grade improve the energy efficiency of the plant complex as long as the surplus heat from the system is not wasted. When the operating costs and investment expenditure of the total plant complex are taken into account, a reasonably high degree of oxygen enrichment (35-80°/0) is the best alternative in practice. Existing operating smelters have achieved single-stream thoughputs of over one million t/yr of concentrates.HistoryLocal capital and operating costs as well as lower energy consumption per unit of metal produced are now the crucial factors in determining the choice of process. In the late I940s, the same reasons prompted Outokumpu to develop the original flash smelting process in Finland. Between 1900 and 1940, very few technical changes in pyrometallurgical copper production took place. However, the commercial use of the flash smelting technique began a new era in metal extraction from sulphide concentrates. The characteristic feature of the method is that the concentrate is smelted in suspension: this offers the most favourable conditions for heat and mass transfer, and thus high reaction velocities. Outokumpu was the first to exploit the known advantages of flash smelting in a commercial installation at Harjavalta in 1949."

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. Cet article passe en revue les considérations métallurgiques liées au traitement de différents types de minerai.INTRODUCTIONThe LaRonde metallurgical plant in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, evolved into a mature milling site following expansions in 2000–2003, thanks to improved processes, manpower, and water treatment capabilities that better accommodate the complex constituents of the LaRonde ore. The ore requires a sequence of grinding, copper- lead and zinc flotation, and precious metals leaching, ending with a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery. A portion (35%) of the tailings is sent back underground as paste backfill after being treated with the SO2-air cyanide destruction process. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metal precipitation area through which the used water passes before returning as recycled water. A biological water treatment plant was built in 2004 to address water toxicity in the final effluent. The water toxicity was the result of the high sulfide content of the LaRonde ore (from thiocyanate or stable cyanide species buildup) and the use of 90% recirculated water in the mill. The water treatment plant uses bacteria to transform thiocyanate into nitrates and precipitate phosphorus from the water before it is discharged into the environment."

"The Mountain Lake deposit is a tabular sandstone-type uranium deposit, hosted by the basal unit of Middle Proterozoic Dismal Lakes Group. Uranium occurs mainly as sooty pitchblende disseminated in stratiform lenses within gently dipping quartzose sandstone. It is associated with copper sulphides, pyrite, hematite, and traces of nickel and cobalt arsenides and of silver.Exploration HistoryUranium showings on the PEC claim group were discovered during 1969 by an airborne radiometric survey carried out over the Dismal Lakes-Great Bear Lake area by Aquitaine of Canada Limited (Bizard and Salat, 1969). Some drilling was done in the vicinity of the showings in 1975 by the company under a joint venture with Eldorado Nuclear Limited but the results were not encouraging (Hassard and Woollett, 1975). During 1972, Trigg, Woollett and Associates Limited conducting surveys for Imperial Oil Limited, discovered numerous high-grade radioactive boulders scattered over a distance of several kilometres north and west of the showings, and the area north of the PEC claims was staked as the YUK claims (Ahuja, 1974). A systematic study of the boulder distribution and Pleistocene geology suggested a source additional to the showings. More intensive exploration followed, and in 1976 drilling just north of the PEC claim group boundary intersected the main deposit at a depth of 75 m to 150 m, beneath overburden up to 60 m thick. Part of the deposit extends into the PEC claim group which is under exploration by the Aquitaine-Cominco Joint Venture.The following brief description is based on the presentations in 1978 by F. Hassard of Trigg, Woollett and Associates Limited at the Geoscience Forum in Yellowknife, and by S.S. Introduction Up to the present, the operation of small mills for the treatment of gold ores has not been favoured in Canada to the extent that it has in other countries. For instance, a list of the operating properties in Southern Rhodesia, published in The Rhodesian Mining Journal of November, 1934, shows for the month of September, 1934, that there were over 500 small mills treating less than 50 tons per day, and the majority of these between 5 and 25 tons. They are operated by individuals, syndicates, and small mining companies. It is presumed that the operations are profitable, although from the published figures of the tonnages treated and the yields, it is difficult for one familiar with Canadian operations to understand how this can be possible, in the majority of cases. Most of these small mills employ stamps with plate amalgamation and with, occasionally, tables to produce a concentrate. Enquiries have been received from many parts of the world respecting milling practice suitable for small gold mines and the type of plant used in Canada. The tenor of these enquiries leaves the impression that the majority of the writers assume that the practice would be similar at all small properties. This, of course, is not the case. Conditions vary widely, and what would be a suitable mill for a typical Nova Scotia ore would not necessarily be wholly adaptable to many ores in Ontario, Quebec, or British Columbia. This paper has been written with the intention of inviting discussion, and it is hoped that, by such discussion, the subject will be more fully dealt with than has been possible in the time at the disposal of the writer. Only more or less standard principles and practices have been dealt with, and, purposely, no reference has been made to plants using mills of the Hadsel, the Nutt, or the Gibson type. As there is available but little reliable information on the costs of installation and operation of small mills, it is also hoped that those contributing to the discussion of milling practices for small mines will be in a position to give these data for the benefit of those contemplating the erection of small plants in Canada. Although it is difficult to generalize, it can be said that there are three types of gold mills commonly used at small mines: (1) Amalgamation and Gravity Concentration; (2) Amalgamation and Flotation; and (3) Cyanidation.

MANY improvements have been made in recent years in the milling of industrial minerals and it is the purpose of this paper to review some of the more important innovations that are now being used in the preparation of these products. Some of the observations which will be made have been prompted by what was seen on a recent trip to industrial mineral milling plants in the north and central sections of the eastern United States. The flotation plants visited were those of the Valley Forge Cement Company at West Conshohocken, Pa., the International Agricultural Corporation at Mount Pleasant, Tenn., and the Aluminum Ore Company at Rosiclare, Ill. Besides these, sand plants in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, coal-cleaning plants in Pennsylvania, pyrophyllite, mica, feldspar, clay, and kyanite plants in North Carolina, and a zinc mill and the Tennessee Valley Authority ceramic laboratory in Tennessee were visited. The milling of industrial minerals can be considered under three broad headings, namely, crushing, grinding, and purification. Usually there is both a separation and grinding problem in treating an industrial mineral, but the problems are distinct, although sometimes a separation is made while grinding, as in the case of a Raymond throw-out mill, which grinds and at the same time throws out most of any hard material present in its feed.

INTRODUCTION THE deleterious effect of stress raisers or notches on the resistance to fatigue of machine components, and other parts subjected to repeated dynamic loading, has been well known for many years. Most engineers in the mechanical field have, at one time or another, encountered a shaft which fractured due to a poor transition fillet, a holding-down bolt which failed due to insufficient tightening or inferior thread form, or a fitted member which broke through a combination of fretting corrosion and clamping stresses. All of these are examples of the damaging influence exerted by stress raisers in fatigue. Other common forms of stress raiser which have taken their toll of dynamic components are: keyways, oil holes, splines, quenching oil grinding cracks, tool marks, and sharp changes in section; some are the result of the design, others of poor execution of the design. It is our experience in the Mines Branch1 and I feel sure this will be corroborated by other fatigue investigators, that the majority of failures are due to incorrect design or faulty preparation of the part concerned, rather than to the use of inferior material. Quite frequently, it is true that the operating conditions necessitate the presence of a 'notch', but even in such cases methods are generally available by which its adverse effect on the life of the component can be reduced or annulled. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a few typical stress raisers, and to provide information on various processes for mitigating their effects in fatigue.

"The Abitibi volcanic belt was sampled along a cross section extending from Matagami to a point east of Rouyn. A few samples were also collected in Louvicourt township, Quebec. The major elements were determined for 344 samples, and rock names were defined using normative minerals. The analytical data were studied by means of variation diagrams. The Abitibi volcanic belt is characterized by rocks belonging to both the tholeiitic and calc-alkaline magmatic series, but they show some differences as compared to some typical reference series, particularly those from Japan. Basalt is the predominant rock type and accounts for 44 per cent of the sampled outcrops. The volcanic rocks are relatively poor in K2O and TiO2. Regionally, the volcanogenic copper-zinc mineralization is associated with the calc-alkaline volcanic sequences. Locally, within such sequences, some types of abnormal deviations from the averages are recognized only in association with the copper-zinc mineralization. The anomalies are ascribed to hydrothermal alteration consisting of the introduction of MgO and removal of N a20; enrichment in K20 is also observed where zinc mineralization predominates. Examples of such anomalous zones show that, in places, this alteration phenomenon can be quite extensive. Petrochemical characteristics can be used as geochemical ore guides in exploration programs."

"Since the 1980s, China has become the predominant producer of REEs. Recently, it introduced REE export quotas and this started a world-scale REE exploration rush. REE resources are concentrated in carbonatite-related deposits, peralkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, REE ± P veins, ion adsorption clays, placers, and some deep ocean sediments. REEs could also be derived as a by-product of phosphate fertilizer, U processing, Ti-Zr-bearing placers, and exploitation of Olympic Dam-type sub-type of IOCG deposits. The ideal REE development target would be located in a politically stable jurisdiction such as Canada. REE grade and tonnage, mineralogy, and permissive metallurgy are some of the key technical factors that could be used to screen projects. INTRODUCTIONAccording to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the term “rare earth elements” (REEs) encompasses yttrium (Y), scandium (Sc), and the lanthanide series: lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), promethium (Pm), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), and lutetium (Lu). This definition is used throughout this paper.REEs are subdivided into light (LREE) and heavy (HREE) categories. LREEs include, Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd and HREE include Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and Y. Promethium (Pm) does not occur in nature. Concentrations of individual LREEs in the upper crust of the Earth are comparable to those of base metals. Even the least abundant REE (Lu) is about 200 times more abundant than gold.The production of REEs, reported in the form of oxides (REOs), for 2011 is estimated at 140 000 t (Figure 1a). Although high technology industries can substitute several REEs with other materials, these substitutes are typically more expensive or less effective than the REEs they replace. A number of countries, including the United States, consider several REEs essential for national security, their economy, and a general reduction in green house gas emissions. The forecasted demand for individual LREOs is much higher than that of HREOs (Figure 2). Dy, Eu, Tb, Nd, and Y are essential for the US economy and subject to predicted supply disruptions (U.S. Department of Energy, 2010)."

Pressure leach autoclave circuits are employed in the leaching of ores, concentrates, mattes, alloys and intermediates for the recovery of metals into solution. Once the metals are extracted into solution the value metals can be recovered by hydrometallurgical means such as by purification followed by electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, pyrohydrolysis, crystallisation and other unit operations. In many of these integrated flowsheets the pressure leach step is pivotal to the recovery of the value metals from the host material. In an expansion or a new project, a large component of the capital cost can be associated with the pressure leach step and process engineers frequently look for opportunities to mitigate costs. This paper examines a new route for increasing the capacity of an exothermic pressure oxidation leach for sulphide concentrates, sulphide and phosphide mattes and alloys.

This paper deals with coal sampling in general and with mechanical coal sampling in particular. The necessity of obtaining representative samples is emphasized. Other sections of the paper are devoted to the design and selection of automatic samplers, with a consideration of the three main types, and the testing, operation and maintenance of these samplers. The cost of the installation of an automated sampling system must be related to the value of the material to be sampled, to the volume of coal involved, and to the savings in labour and economy which can be achieved. Introduction T HE Committee?:; on Coal Sampling of the Coal Study Subsection, Thermal Power Section (Eastern Zone), Canadian Electrical Association, was established in November, 1963, to "study the various problem areas of coal sampling." The first undertaking of the Committee was to at-tempt to survey the problem areas of coal sampling through an evaluation of coal sampling difficulties as experienced at both the plant design and operational levels within the electric utilities represented on the Committee. The Adra tunnel near Naramata BC experienced a fire in 2010 that burned timber sets within the tunnel and caused severe spalling of rock from the roof and tunnel walls. The nature of the damage is documented and efforts completed to rehabilitate and open a portion of this tunnel to the public are described. The use of shortcrete and rock bolts is a technically and economically superior support system to timber sets as well as being far more fire resistant.

The Tata Steel mill at Skinningrove in the North East of England produces top hat sections for mineshaft guides in sizes 102 and 150 mm. The top hat section is the technically preferred shaft guide choice for modern deep mine shafts. This paper explores the relative service performance of top hat and square hollow section guides in service. Comparative corrosion performance is reviewed and the paper describes work commissioned by Tata Steel (as Corus) undertaken by Aker Kvaerner Engineering to evaluate relative winding speeds, relative loads and fatigue life in service. The experience of supply to UK Potash mining is discussed and the future view of high capacity hoisting and larger section size market need and availability is assessed.

"A “green” collector project has been initiated at Vale Base Metals Technology Development to replace xanthate. Bench and miniplant testwork showed comparable metallurgical results between xanthate and DTC (sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate), a “greener” collector. During the first DTC plant trial, a strong interaction between the process water and DTC negatively impacted the metallurgy. The subsequent investigation showed that the quality of process water including suspended solids and dissolved metal ions had a significant impact on the performance with DTC, while less so with PAX. This paper explains these differences using UV spectrophotometry and batch flotation tests. INTRODUCTIONVale Base Metals is dedicated to sustainable mining and mineral processing. One of the key activities is to find a “greener” collector to replace xanthate (PAX: potassium amyl xanthate), which decomposes during storage and flotation causing CS2 emissions in the work place. As the most promising candidate, DTC (sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate) was evaluated in the lab and miniplant (Dong & Xu, 2011). Consequently, a plant trial was conducted in the winter of 2010. However, the results were not as good as expected. The subsequent investigation showed that the quality of process water played a significant role in the metallurgical performance with DTC but less so with xanthate.From test work in 1996 and 1997, a series of batch tests were performed at Clarabelle Mill to investigate the winter/summer metallurgical shift with xanthate. As shown in Figure 1, the winter metallurgy was considerably worse than the summer metallurgy (Xu & Wilson, 2000). At 80% pentlandite recovery, the concentrate (Cu+Ni) grade was 21% in the winter and 26% in the summer. At 23% (Cu+Ni) concentrate grade, pentlandite recovery was 85% in the summer and 70% in the winter. In the summer, the process water is much cleaner, with very low concentrations of dissolved metals ions and suspended solids; while in the winter, the water is yellow and cloudy, with much higher suspended solids. Based on these results, it was concluded that the process water in winter has a detrimental impact on metallurgy."

The present paper consists of a survey of the literature on the problems of abrasion and wear of metals and materials by suspended matter. This problem is a very general one in industry, and is especially notice-able in the operation of cyclones and other types of dust collectors. The problem of abrasive dust in corrosive gas environments, such as commonly encountered in metallurgical industries, is particularly severe. Very little work has been done in the study of this type of abrasive wear, especially at high temperatures. However, a general review is presented here of all the work published on related subjects, such as that involving sand erosion in turbines and water wheels and the effect of temperature on friction wear. Topics in this paper include: blasting wear by sand, quartz, limestone, silicon carbide and other refractory particles; methods of investigation; effects of velocity, temperature and *Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment, Valcarter, P.Q. angle of attack; correlation between indentation hardness, scratch hard-ness and resistance to abrasion; the effect of protective coatings; resistance of various metals; etc.

By 1980, the free world's need for economic sources of energy is expected to double. As a result, there will be a tremendous potential for all energy sources working together to supply the demand. For coal to continue its dominant role as a low-cost energy source, means must be found for it to meet the challenge of nuclear power and to overcome obstacles placed on its use by air and water pollution regulations. As the more limited reserves of gas and oil diminish, economic ways are also required for converting coal to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels, and to chemicals, thus resulting in optimum utility of the most abundant low-cost fuel resource. The means for accomplishing these ends can only come about by a vigorous research and development program. Successful efforts by industry and government working together, both in America and abroad, will assure the continued use of coal to meet the world's energy demands. This paper discusses the emerging patterns of energy sources throughout the world and the role that research and development on coal will play in supplying future energy requirements.

"Hydrometallurgical processing involves process stages, like leaching, that create harsh environment for stainless steels. High acidity, the presence of chlorides and oxidizing ions combined with relatively high temperature create risk for both uniform and localized corrosion. Advanced electrochemical techniques were employed to study uniform and pitting corrosion of two stainless steel grades 316L and 2205. Results obtained with the linear polarization resistance technique combined with the harmonics distortion analysis, electrochemical noise and coupled multielectrode array systems are compared to the results of conventional electrochemical techniques and immersion tests.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgical processing has become favoured in metals production in recent years due to energy costs, leaner ore bodies and environmental factors. Because the hydrometallurgical processing route is flexible, various types of secondary raw materials, like flotation tailings, dusts, sludges and slimes can also be treated in addition to conventional mineral concentrates (Sarveswara Rao & Acharya, 2008).Hydrometallurgical processing relies on aqueous chemistry, usually acids, at temperatures around 100°C for the recovery of metals from ores, concentrates, recycled or residual materials. The processing route can typically be divided into three stages: leaching, solution concentration/purification and metal recovery. The processing environment is aggressive, especially in leaching. High acidity, relatively high temperature together with impurities, like chloride ions, place high demands on the corrosion resistance of construction materials. The dominant corrosion mechanism may be uniform corrosion or localized corrosion depending on the process conditions (Ekman & Torsner, 2010). This complicates the prediction of corrosion rates and, consequently, cost effective material selection.Traditional means to evaluate uniform corrosion resistance of stainless steels are immersion tests and the results are published in the form of iso-corrosion diagrams (Outokumpu Stainless, 2010). For the localized corrosion, namely pitting and crevice corrosion, immersion tests can be used but the duration of the test is rather long because an incubation period takes place prior to the occurrence of the actual localized corrosion damage. Electrochemical techniques, traditionally in the form of cyclic polarization scans, have been employed to assess the susceptibility of a material to pitting corrosion (Papavinasam, 2008). They cannot, however, give any indication of the pitting corrosion rate and lack potential for on-line measurements."

Project Environmental Approval is a multi-faceted issue. From a mining perspective, it is a costly item because of avoidable time delay. The government perspective is that the approvals are a necessary part of meeting departmental requirements to ensure that the wellbeing of other uses of the environment is maintained. This paper outlines some of the problems inherent in the environmental approvals process and makes recommendations to both the proponent and government about improving the efficiency of the process.

THE purpose of this paper is to point out, briefly, the importance of the coal mining industry of Alberta and to stress the economic factors that hinder its development; also to offer suggestions relating to the major problems of the industry. The minor problems will not be dealt with in detail, because, if the major problems are taken care of, it is felt that the industry itself can take care of ,he remainder. COAL MINING NO LESS IMPORTANT THAN GOLO MINING The large increase in metal mining development in all provinces of Canada, excepting Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the Maritimes, has had the effect of focussing public attention on this branch of the industry. The fact, also, that this development came at a time of depression has been of immense benefit to Canada as a whole. On account of the necessity and consequent demand for gold, with its attendant increase in price, through government action, from $20.67 per ounce to $35.00 per ounce, it is safe to say that the public of Canada have become, today, gold mining conscious. While everyone admits the great value. of the gold mrn111g industry, nevertheless, the equal value to Canada of certain other industries must not be lost sight of. The coal mining industry, in particular, is worthy of greater public and government support than has been accorded it in the past. It would seem unnecessary to stress this matter to a meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, but unless certain facts are brought to your attention, there is danger that the coal mining industry will not be developed to the extent its national importance deserves. Too many public men and men in authority are unaware of the value of coal mining.

"Rock masses comprised of stiff inclusions in softer matrix are common in various geological environments. The heterogeneity and multi-scale nature of these materials make the evaluation of their mechanical properties a challenging task, which cannot be accomplished using conventional laboratory tests and composite mixture rules. We employ the homogenization method to estimate the mechanical properties of geological materials with inclusions. The homogenization method solves the equations of elasticity on the material (microscopic) scale for a unit cell subjected to unit strains under periodic boundary condition. The micro-scale elasticity equations are solved using the Finite Elements Method, and are in turn used to obtain the structure scale (macroscopic) material matrix.In this research, Finite Element models for unit cells with spherical and ellipsoidal inclusions were developed. Using the unit cells, a parametric study of the geometrical and statistical microscopic properties of the material composites was performed. The following parameters were studied: volumetric ratio, Young’s modulus ratio, size-distribution of inclusion and inclination angle of inclusions. The main purpose of the parametric study was to study the deviation from isotropy as a function of the aforementioned parameters.It was found that for volumetric ratio of 5%-40%, the deviation from isotropy increases, as the volumetric ratio of inclusions increases. For spherical inclusions, most of the cases studied exhibit quasiisotropic behaviour; whereas ellipsoidal inclusions exhibit considerable deviation from isotropy. The work in this paper describes the theory, development and analysis of a computer model simulating a mine operation moving material using concurrent decline ramp truck haulage and skipping practices. This simulation was designed specifically to assess the performance of the truck haulage component and to expand on the scope and capabilities of traditional TKM fleet calculations. Haulage fleet simulation results were similar to TKM calculations for the lower to moderate production rate cases. However, comparisons of ramp-up and high production rate scenarios indicated that the simulation model was significantly more sensitive to operating practices and factors not accounted for by calculations derived when using a single TKM figure. Given the proper calibration of inputs and logic, the simulation model was additionally capable of providing information associated with general mine operations efficiency. Further benefits of the simulation model over a TKM approach included logistical assessments such as production schedule feasibility, productivity trade-off quantifications for proposed operating practices, and the validation of mine resource utilization scheduling. The simulation model was able to expand on traditional methods to approach planning and logistics by considering factors such as truck queuing, real-time traffic interactions, random events, and competition for resources on mine productivity.
