THE USE of higher grade charges in blast furnaces in the form of sintered or pelletized concentrates has been increasing rapidly. The question of beneficiation of iron ores for this purpose is therefore receiving much attention as more deposits are developed. Many iron ores may respond well to magnetic roasting procedures followed by magnetic concentration, however, in most cases other more standard ore dressing methods are competitive and cheaper. For magnetic roasting as applied to iron ore beneficiation, the present question is "Can it be economically justified in situations where it appears to produce good results?" "AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. "In many gold deposits, a reasonable amount of the gold that remains in the cyanide leach tailing is associated with pyrite. Some gold plants have found it economical to incorporate gravity circuits on the cyanide leach tailing to recover the gold bearing pyrite before subjecting it to fine grinding, then recycling the ground pyrite back to the cyanide leach circuit. For low grade gold deposits the loss of gold bearing pyrite is exacerbated as the broader process economics normally favour a coarse grind (> 150 ?m). An option that has received attention over the last decade is to recover the gold bearing sulphides in the milling circuit by gravity, similar to the widely-practiced gravity recovery of free liberated gold. The modelling and simulation of a gravity gold circuit in a milling flowsheet is relatively simple compared with a gold bearing pyrite circuit, as the recycle advantages and breakage functions for gold and pyrite are quite different. This current work represents an attempt to simulate the gravity recovery of gold bearing sulphides in a milling circuit that also incorporates fine grinding, using relatively simple simulation models. The simulation results are further explored with reference to the economics of this type of circuit.INTRODUCTION It is well known that gold is associated with pyrite in most sulphide gold deposits and that the amount of gold associated with pyrite will vary from deposit to deposit. Most of the gold associated with pyrite is liberated in the grinding circuit during the processing of a gold ore. However, some gold remains occluded in the pyrite and is lost in the final leach tailings. Little information is available in the literature on methods to enhance gold liberation from pyrite by specifically removing pyrite, either in the grinding circuit or from the final tailings stream, and grinding it finer. One of the earliest record of this approach is described by King (King, 1949) where pyrite present in Witwatersrand gold ores was recovered by circular jigs and Johnson barrels followed by fine grinding of the concentrate prior to cyanide leaching. Dominy et al., 1970, provides information on the use of Yuba jigs to recover pyrite from the discharge end of ball mills. Again, the jig concentrate was ground to a fine particle size before cyanide leaching to recover the liberated gold. Unfortunately, no information is provided in these articles on the additional gold recovery from implementing these circuits in a flowsheet. Martins et al., 1993, provides details of a gravity circuit using Reichert cones and spirals to recover gold bearing pyrite from a cyanide leach tailings followed by fine grinding of the pyrite concentrate in a Tower mill. The ground concentrate returned to the front end of the already installed leach circuit. Overall recoveries were increased by some 2% to 4% depending on the amount of gold and pyrite in the plant feed."

In-pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) is increasingly being considered by mining companies as a means to reduce their dependence on trucks and thus, fuel, tires, labour, etc. There is potential for great savings in operating costs which ultimately can mean better economics for a mining project. Vale has considered the application of IPCC at its Moatize coal project in Mozambique. Up to three studies have been conducted with the latest, at a pre-feasibility level, showing some promise. This paper explores the mine planning and IPCC engineering elements required in an IPCC study, their application to the Moatize project, and the drivers which most impact the viability of IPCC at Moatize.

"IntroductionDURING the past half century, the economy of Western Canada was largely centred on agriculture. However, the impact of World War II has led to an acceleration in the development of a variety of natural resources so that, today, Western Canada is experiencing great industrial development. Consequently, the availability •of low-cost energy assumes prime importance. In the final analysis, industrial growth and expansion are intimately linked to the energy resources.Coal ReservesHas Western Canada adequate coal reserves to meet the present accelerating demand for power in the days that lie ahead? This question must be answered before detailed consideration can be given to the probable patterns •by which various energy sources in Western Canada may be expected to meet the expanding demand. Figure 1 indicates the extent and distribution of the Canadian coal reserves, the data having been prepared by Dr. B. R. MacKay for the Royal Commission on Coal in 1946 (1). The amount of readily recoverable coal is listed as one-half the quantities shown on the chart. It is interesting-to note that upwards of 90 per cent •of the Canadian coal reserves .are located in the three most westerly Canadian provinces. It has been estimated that the coal reserves, at the present rate of mining, would be adequate for about 3,000 years. Consequently, it may be concluded that the coal •reserves in Western Canada •are indeed adequate to meet tremendous energy demands for many centuries. When the oil and natural gas have been exhausted, the great coal reserves will still be available."

A microscopic study was made of a series of simultaneous slag and metal samples taken from a low carbon basic open hearth heat. An attempt was made to identify the various micro-constituents found. As the various impurities in the bath are oxidized, the metal structure changes from that of high-phosphorus white cast iron to that of low.-carbon steel. A detailed study of phosphorus distribution is included. The acid run-off slag has an .acicular orthosilicate structure which changes on 'shape-up' to a very basic tri-calcium silicate and calciuim ferrite structure. Many unidentified minor constituents are present in the slags. Though metallography will never replace chemic.al analysis of the bath, the microsopic study of polished slags has some promise of being useful in slag control work.

Abstract-Rare earth element (REE) data are reported for ores, sulfide-bearing rocks and host rocks from massive sulfide deposits and barren sulfide facies iron formations in Proterozoic volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon-Snow Lake area, Manitoba. Some of the rare earth elements (e.g., Eu), are selectively leached in zones of intense alteration and redeposited together with the sulfides and silicates in the uppermost parts of the alteration zones and at the rock-water interface. Chondrite normalized REE profiles of layered sulfide ores and exhalites proximal to the deposits typically have positive europium anomalies and are enriched in light REE. In contrast, barren sulfide facies iron formations exhibit negative or ‘normal’ Eu profiles. REE data are useful to explorationists in determining the presence of ‘off-hole’ metal-bearing sulfide zones, in distinguishing metal-poor sulfidic layers related to ‘economic’ hydrothermal activity from barren sulfide facies iron formation and in some instances as a means of establishing ‘ore-equivalent’ strata.

Aluminum powder metallurgy (APM) is an advanced metal forming technology frequently employed to fabricate complex structural components in a near-net-shape fashion. Exhibiting nearly 100% material utilization, APM continues to rise in popularity. Recent research initiatives in this field have emphasized the development and processing of advanced 2xxx and 7xxx series alloys. In particular, APM equivalents to wrought 7075 and 2024 have been sought. An overview of work completed in this area is presented. Included are data on the various production stages (powder compaction, sintering, forging, and heat treatment) as well as the microstructure and mechanical properties of the finished products.

Introduction The operations of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, L1mited, have always been concerned with the mining of low-grade copper ores. In the fifty years of this Company's existence, nearly 60,000,000 tons of such material has been successfully mined and treated. During these years, many changes in mining practice took place. However, at Copper Mountain, due to the large tonnages of very low grade material, it was realized that something more than changing mining methods would have to take place if these low-grade orebodies were to be mined at a profit and the Company and. its employees enjoy many years of successful operation and employment. Production costs were mounting commensurately with rising taxes and the increasing cost of supplies, labour, freight, and smelting, while the value of the product on the market was not increasing in price to compensate for the higher costs of production. A survey of the mineable ore in 1944 indicated that, of the 12,000,000 tons in the reserves, only 3,500,000 tons was now profitable ore. This reduction in the commercial ore reserves was a serious matter, as it meant that the mine had only two years of life at the profitable shipp1ng rate of 4,800 tons per day. Further, the location in the mine of the orebodies making up the 3,500,000 tons was not suitable for such high production.

INTRODUCTION A DISTILLATION process offers one of the most effective methods of refining metals. Its use is particularly attractive in the case of reactive metals which are not readily treated by pyrometallurgical or electrolytic methods. The 1ow vapour pressure of most metals severely restricts the applicability of the disti1lation process and only one or two metals may be effectively treated under atmospheric pressure at a reasonable temperature. If operations are carried out under reduced pressure several additional metals may be effectively distilled. Table I shows the vapour pressure of a number of metals together with a value of the free energy of formation of their ?oxides. Zinc and cadmium head the list and for many years? they have .been effectively refined by distillation. Sodium, magnesium, and calcium follow in descending order, and they may be distilled readily in vacuo and with difficulty at atmospheric pressure. Sodium, which is not of great metallurgical interest, is not considered. Magnesium has recently been produced in considerable tonnages by distillation methods ( 3). This paper describes the vacuum distillation of magnesium and calcium, their separation from each other, and their separation from less volatile impurities.

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.

To increase drill fleet capacity and meet increased ore demands at its Carol Lake Project, the Iron Ore Company of Canada initiated a program in 1975 to convert the Gardner-Denver 120 and Bucyrus-Erie 60-R rotary drill fleet from 12 1/4-inch-diameter multi-pass drilling to 15-inch-diameter single-pass drilling. This paper will examine briefly the conversion program , including some tests and results, and examine how the utilization of the 15-inch-diameter blast-holes, coordinated by a comprehensive drilling and blasting program, has improved the drilling, blasting and drilling-plus-blasting aspects of the mine operations, from both economic and operational viewpoints.

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of non-ferrous metals. In recent years, significant progress has been made in research and commercial application of pressure leaching technology to produce some nonferrous metals. Research and development activities include a low-pressure, low-temperature leaching technology for complex copper concentrates, a hematite process to treat pressure leach solutions from zinc concentrates, and a pressure leaching - solvent extraction process for molybdenum and rhenium. Examples of commercial practices include a two-stage pressure leach technology in a zinc plant in Danxia, a direct leaching technology in a zinc plant in Zhuzhou, a high pressure acid leaching process for a nickel laterite project in RAMU, and a pressure leaching technology to treat arsenic sulfides in a plant in Guixi. The development of pressure leaching technology for the recovery of lead, vanadium, gallium, germanium, and precious metals in China will also be described in this paper.

"Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common and reliable methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide concentrates. However, when processing concentrates that contain natural carbonaceous matter, substantial gold losses occur due to autoclave preg-robbing. The latter involves formation of gold chloride complexes under typical POX conditions (high temperatures, high acidity and high ORP) and subsequent sorption of these complexes by carbonaceous matter. Naturally, chloride ion plays a significant role in the process of autoclave preg-robbing; its concentration in POX solution has a well-marked effect on subsequent gold recovery during cyanidation of POX residue. The previous research done by SRC Hydrometallurgy showed that autoclave preg-robbing of gold could be significantly inhibited by the addition of mercury(II) compounds to POX slurry. The positive effect of mercury(II) was well pronounced both at high (>20 mg/L) and low (<5 mg/L) Cl concentrations in POX solution. The successful bench-scale laboratory testing was followed by pilot plant trials at Ore Test Facility in Blagoveshchensk, Russia. The present paper provides the results of these trials. The bench-scale testing results were verified; the optimum oxidizing parameters and reagent dosage were specified. The behavior of mercury (II) at POX pilot plant was found to be in good consistency with industrial practice described in the literature.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common, reliable, and commercially proven methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates. However, when processing double refractory materials that contain natural carbonaceous matter, POX technology advantages are compromised by autoclave preg-robbing of gold. The latter occurs when natural organic carbon and soluble halides are both present in autoclave feed. Strongly oxidizing conditions of POX (high temperature, oxidation-reduction potential or ORP, and acidity) favor formation of gold-halide (mostly, gold-chloride) complexes, which tend to bond with carbonaceous matter. The exact nature and mechanism of this bonding is unknown, but as the result of this, cyanide is unable to leach gold from POX residue and the precious metal is lost to the tails (Axenov et al., 2014; Dimov, Chryssoulis, & Sodhi, 2003; Fomenko, Zaytsev, Pleshkov, Chugaev, & Shneerson, 2013)."

Phase change during pressure let down releases significant amounts of energy that must be controlled to avoid undo wear and tear on equipment. Hydrometallurgical slurries require flow control equipment (valves and tanks) made of expensive materials to withstand the abrasive, and often corrosive nature of the slurry. Presented is a model of the nozzle of a let-down choke which is designed to control the flow pattern that exits the choke (valve) as it enters the receiving tank. This model can be used to design chokes which allow for the dissipation of the energy released during pressure let down by spreading the stream over a significant portion of the slurry pool in the receiving tank to minimize wear on equipment near the nozzle exit and the bottom of the slurry tank. An example uses the model to choose the nozzle expansion (area) ratio to select the outlet slurry velocity and slurry expansion angle.

Mkango Resources Limited is developing the Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element Project in southeast Malawi. Since being awarded the exclusive exploration licence for the project in January 2010, Mkango has completed an extensive work programme including detailed mineralogical studies, geological mapping, geochemical sampling and trenching, environmental and social studies, two phases of diamond drilling, and extensive metallurgical test work. In October 2012, the company announced a NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate comprising an Indicated resource of 13.2 million tonnes grading 1.62% total rare earth oxides (TREO) and an Inferred resource of 18.6 million tonnes grading 1.38% TREO. The Indicated mineral resource estimate formed the basis for commencement of the Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS). The mineralogical program identified the fluorocarbonate mineral, synchysite, and the phosphate mineral, apatite, as the primary rare earth element (REE) bearing minerals. Extensive flotation testwork conducted at Mintek in South Africa has resulted in an effective regime to increase the REO grade 2.6 times. Initial leaching testwork by Mintek identified that a selective hydrochloric acid (HCl) leach can target the gangue minerals with minimal REE dissolution. Recent testwork undertaken at Nagrom in Western Australia has expanded on this work to develop a two stage HCl leach process incorporating HCl recycling. A downstream processing route of purification and cerium rejection to produce a cerium depleted high grade REE concentrate suitable as feed to a separation facility is proposed.
