The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016. With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. Recently, the quality of sinter feed ore used in sintering process has deteriorated. In particular, Fe has decreased and gangue component has increased in the sinter feed ore. Increase of gangue is not only the factor to influence sinter qualities, but also the factor to increase coke ratio in the blast furnace operation as the increase of slag ratio. Therefore, to cope with the deterioration of iron ore qualities, studies on alternative iron ore resources and development of its utilisation technology have been required.In that kind of new iron ore resources, authors focus on high-grade magnetite fine. High-grade magnetite fine decreases sinter productivity by the decrease of permeability of sintering bed. Therefore a new study for using large amount of magnetite fine is required. In the past, there are some studies about the effect of mixing ratio and size of magnetite fine on productivity and quality, but there are few studies about magnetite fine segregation in charging.In this research, the melting behaviour and interfacial reaction calcium-ferrite, which has important role as bonding agent among iron ores, melts into hematite substrate and magnetite substrate was studied. As the results, it was defined that upper segregation of high-grade magnetite fine is suitable for productivity of sintered ore. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The island of Java lies within the Sunda-Banda magmatic arc, which is characterised by multiple phases of volcanic activity and extensive compressional deformation. Along this zone, significant gold and copper mineralisation occurs, including some of the world’s largest deposits. In West Java, epithermal gold mineralisation is typically located in a series of extensional and strike-slip faults that cut Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks. These are all low-sulfidation, epithermal, vein-stockwork-style deposits developed in Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, which have been intruded by shallow-level plutons.This paper discusses an example of epithermal mineralisation at Mt Subang, West Java. Gold mineralisation was originally identified from stream sediment, panned concentrate and rock geochemistry sampling in the early 1990s. Geophysical surveys (magnetics and induced polarisation resistivity/chargeability), trenching, pitting and diamond hole drilling has subsequently revealed silicified-quartz vein epithermal gold mineralisation hosted within fault structures. It is clear that these structures acted as hydrothermal fluid pathways leading to the development of mineralised offshoots along north–south extensional and en-echelon arrays of north-east–south-west and transtensional faults. A number of vertical offshoots also occur in flexures and fault jogs. Post-mineral faulting has subsequently dissected and offset a number of the offshoots. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of structure and fault kinematics and displacement magnitudes is required in order to understand the geometry and continuity of mineralisation across major structures and maximise the resource potential. The presence of undetonated explosives in a rock face after firing constitutes a hazard which can result in a fatal or serious accident if undetected before drilling commences.Most accidents caused by drilling into explosives are the result of failure to examine the working face properly and lack of care in subsequent drilling operations; it is not always realized that explosive may be left in the butts of holes or may be driven into cracks or crevices in the rock.Obviously the best means of preventing accidents of this nature is to adopt methods of drilling, charging and firing which will reduce the hazard to a minimum.There are three ways in which undetonated explosives may be left in the rock face, namely:1. Misfires.2. Cut-off shots.3. Incomplete detonation or failure of the charge to propagate throughout.MisfiresNo attempt will be made in this paper to deal fully with the question of the prevention of misfires, as apart from the fact that most of the preventive methods are well known, it is believed that if the miner receives his explosives and means of initiation in good order, and proper care is taken in their use, the failure of a charge to fire will be a rare occurrence. The provision of central fuse capping stations on mines has gone a long way towards the elimination of misfires caused by the mishandling of safety fuse anddetonators.

An extensive suite of elements are routinely assayed on all resource drill core samples to assist in deposit scale resource definition, local mine scale delineation of ore zones, and ore characterisation for the planning and scheduling of mining and processing of ores at Olympic Dam. This paper discusses a deposit scale geochemical relation that can be used by mine geologists to find more high-grade ore at the local mine area scale at Olympic Dam.A 3D grade shell representing 0.8 per cent Cu was created for a mine area using drill hole assay data. This defined the geometry of the ore zone. The Cu-grade shell was then overlain onto the existing resource block model to evaluate the relationships between the Cu-grade shell, copper and other elements. The strongest correlation was between copper and manganese. The block model showed a dramatic decrease in the concentration of manganese just below the below the Cu-grade shell.Several drill holes that intersected the Cu-grade shell were selected to evaluate the copper manganese relation at the drill hole scale. As expected, the individual drill holes displayed a strong inverse relation between copper and manganese. A geochemical footwall was then modelled representing 0.1 wt per cent Mn. Using both the Cu– and Mn-grade shells, several drill holes were designed/drilled and all hit high-grade copper.For the vast majority of the deposit the inverse relation between copper and manganese is valid; however, in areas with intense chlorite alteration (related to amounts of mafic to ultramafic rocks) this relation is not as strong, due to increased manganese in the rock mass. Even though using the copper manganese relation as a drill targeting method was not always as reliable in a few small areas of the deposit, it demonstrates the value of using existing assay data integrated with the resource block model to discover local mine scale geochemical relationships which can be used to more effectively design drill holes to discover high-grade ore at Olympic Dam.CITATION:Griffith, J and Ehrig, K, 2017. To cope with varying raw material qualities and increasing prices for energy, a more frequent and accurate monitoring of the processing of iron ore became the focus in sinter plant operations. Traditionally, quality control in iron producing industries has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of a sinter that defines the properties and behaviour in the blast furnace is often not frequently monitored. One fast method to analyse the mineralogical composition of iron sinter, raw mixtures and iron ores is X-ray diffraction (XRD). Recently statistical methods such as similarity analysis or partial least square regression (PLSR) in combination with XRD raw data has become more and more popular in handling large amounts of data and correlating process-relevant parameters directly with an XRD measurement. PLSR can be used to correlate process parameters directly from the XRD pattern without investigating the mineral content. Hidden information that is present in the measurement but not determined with traditional methods can be used to improve the characterisation of the analysed materials.CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2017. Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! Being a source of structural materials for many centuries, the modern image of the ferrous metallurgy is burdened with obsolete technologies with disregard towards new environmental protection requirements. The production cycle of metallurgical products have two clear-cut stages: I . production of liquid metal and casting into steel billets; and 2. processing of steel billets in solid state under high temperature to produce various shapes and profiles of metal products. Plastic deformation of metal at the second stage is least associated with environmental pollution and is presently being provided with more and more advanced equipment.

IN a mine with any considerable output the economical handling and transport of ore underground is a matter of prime importance, and in the design or lay-out of a trucking system the question of what form the points and crossings are to take should be one of the first considered. Trucks may be moved from one line of rails to another by the following means: by flat sheets, with which may be coupled turn-tables, or by points and crossings. The latter class may be further divided into fixed and movable points.Flat sheets and turn-tables, owing to the time and skill needed by the trucker in using them, are seldom of great value with large tonnages, unless for purely temporary work, and the choice narrows down to one between fixed and movable points andcrossings. Both systems have their disadvantages - movable points being liable to jamb with dirt and get out of order, whilst with fixed points trucks may sometimes run over the points and capsize, or go on to the wrong line, though this is not of frequent occurrence. On the other hand. the fixed points are simple, easily laid, and strong, and there is no necessity for the trucker to work any levers, the truck being guided on to its new direction by screwing.Cast-iron points and crossings were first introduced into the North mine during the opening-up of the 950-ft. level, and the first arrangement was designed for a double turn-out in the main crosscut. Since then both the points and crossings have beenmodified several times, and it may be interesting to briefly outline the various forms through which they have passed, showing the reasons for the retention of some features and the rejection of others.

Formation of gold-bearing veins in Otago Schist was intimately linked to the structural evolution of the schist belt. The currently-exploited Macraes gold deposit formed in a regional scale shear zone during latemetamorphic uplift of the schist belt. Further exploration for this type of deposit will be facilitated by an increased understanding of the late-metamorphic structural evolution of the schist belt. To this end, a three-dimensional cross section through the Otago Schist has been drawn using structural data gathered at outcrops in a 20 - 40 km wide transect across central Otago. This is the first continuous detailed structural section to be drawn through the belt. The section spans an area from Textural Zone 1 metagreywacke of the Torlesse terrane in the northeast through TZ 4 schist in the central region and across the Caples-Torlesse boundary to Textural Zone 3 schist of the Caples terrane in the southwest. Two different late-metamorphic structural generations are identified in this section: the long-recognised Manorburn Generation, and a new æPoolburn GenerationÆ. The location of the Caples-Torlesse boundary has been refined on this transect by field mapping combined with whole rock geochemistry.

The Central Andes in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina , contain two contiguous terranes which were accreted to Gondwanaland between the end of the Devonian and the end of the Triassic. These terranes, Arequipa in the north, and Chilenia in the south, differ from each other in the timing and style of their metallogenic development. However, they contain over 90% of the Central Andean porphyry copper resource. The copper porphyries in the Arequipa terrane are Paleocene to lower Oligocene in age, whereas the Chilenia deposits are mid-upper Cretaceous and mid-upper Miocene. Porphyry copper deposits occur outside these terranes, but are all Miocene in age. Miocene porphyry-style mineralisation also exists in the Arequipa terrane, but is copper-deficient and gold-rich. The accreted terranes may have favoured porphyry and other styles of copper mineralisation because they possessed relatively thin continental crust compared to adjacent parts of the Andes. Crustal thickening which commenced at about 30 Ma in the Arequipa terrane coincided with a major change to polymetallic, precious metal mineralisation which commonly displays high sulfidation characteristics.

DESCRIPTION OF OREThe ore consists, in general, of a very finely grained mixture of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite, with a gangue of quartz and schistose material, and contains about one ounce of silver to the unit of lead.Minor minerals are chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and ruby silver. The amount of gangue within the ore-bodies themselves is usually less than 20% of the weight of the whole. The ore is banded in a way that corresponds to the structure of the original schists, and is by no means uniform in composition-at one point, for example, blende may predominate, and a few feet farther on the body may become highly pyritic.Owing to the intimate association of the mineral constituents of the ore, it is very difficult to separate them from one another.Although this remark applies to ore from all parts of the field, the difficulty is particularly noticeable with Rosebery ore, the minerals of which are more intimately mixed, and are of smaller grain size than are the minerals of the Hercules ore.To effect a reasonably clean separation, it is necessary to grind the ore so that 90% passes a 200-mesh I.M.M. screen. Microscopic examination of the crushed product shows that 85% of the minus 200-mesh material is less than 30 microns in diameter, or, in terms of screen sizing, is minus 400 mesh. Particles under 30 microns are found to consist, of one mineral only, but in particles over this size separation has not always been effected. For instance, it is known that part of the galena and of the pyrite in the zinc concentrate is associated with sphalerite, and that part of the galena in the mill residue is associated with pyrite. There is only slight association between the minerals in the lead concentrate.

"In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. Magnetite cenospheres 40-270 I/m in diameter have been found during the combustion of pyrite concentrate.Micrographs of the surface and internal structures are presented together with comment on the mechanism of forrnation.The similarity to cenospheres found during the combustion of pulverized fuel was noted and speculation raised to their contribution to the dust and fume load in flash smelters.

Very little has been written about the discovery and early history of prospecting of ironstone deposits in the Iron Knob-Middleback Range area of South Australia, the main source of supply of ironstone (hematite) for the Australian steel industry, and scanty though the record is, much of it is wrong or misleading.With the help of several people, to whom acknowledgement is made at the end of the paper, the writer has unravelled some of the story, but not the whole story. It is hoped that publication of this paper will stimulate interest in others, who may be able to supplement this account from family records, from the files of newspapers, or from archives.

Major operating aspects of the Mary Kathleen Uranium Ltd. treatment plant are discussed with partkular reference to those which are peculiar to this operation.Problems associated with the production of a penalty free uranium oxide product are examined and the methods developed to overcome them are described in detail.INTRODUCTIONMary K,athleen Uranium Ltd. is the largest of the Australian uranium producers. The flow-sheet is based on fine grinding, standard sulphuric acid leach, ion exchange concentration, and magnesia precipitation of the final product, with certain modifications introduced as the result of pilot plant investigations at the South Australian Department of Mines Research Laboratories in Adelaide.The plant commenced operations in June, 1958, attained design tonnlige of 1,120 tons per day in September of that year and has since operated continuously with a throughput in excess of 1,000 tons per day. Pilot plant recommendations generally have been followed, and predicted results have been attained. The only exception has been the silica and rare earth content of the product produced during the early months of operation. Considerable modification of the early resin regeneration techniques resulted in the reduction of the silica content of the product to within specification limits. Research work in the ion exchange section has also resulted in the reduction of the rare earth content of the product to below specification levels. All product now being produced is completely within the agreed specification limits of impurities.
