The commercial success of a mining project can be strongly influenced by the business activity which takes place away from the mine site. The project revenue is determined by marketing success which results from persistent research and full realisation of suitable products and by-products and appropriate upgrading achieved in conjunction with proper material security and insurance. Significant costs of transport can be optimised, protection of the environment carefully managed and skilled employees acquired as a valuable asset. Working capital requirements are often substantial and should be carefully established and financed, possibly by special contractual arrangements for product sales.

In planning its production and investment activities the mining industry has generally paid too little attention to perceptive analysis of its market environment. The nature of world economic difficulties over the past decade is not a mystery. Essent- ially prolonged affluence has engendered a false sense of security and fostered entrenched vest- ed interests hostile to economic change. The overall outlook remains poor. For mining projects mineral demand affects both product prices and the availability of specific sales outlets. Long-term projection of demand is complex and a key to success is concentrating on analysis of fundamental deter- minants and avoiding mindless extrapolation.

Results obtained from linear sweep voltammetry at a graphite anode in cryolite-alumina melts are presented, together with those obtained from a chronopotentiometric investigation of the influence of dissolved metal. The results, consistent with both production information and other fundamental studies, showed that the following two reactions occur at the anode.Equation 1Al (dissolved) ? Al3+ + 3eThe latter accounted for some of the loss in currentefficiency.The rate of the former reaction is limited by the slow desorption of the CO from the electrode surface. Mass transfer conditions, and hence cell design, influence the importance of the second reaction.

This presentation addresses the sources and weighting of project risk in coarse gold deposits with relevance to experiences at the Ballarat mine and Castlemaine goldfield. With sample representation and reliability often a source of great error in the resource estimation of coarse gold deposits, it follows that this matter should be of greatest risk to a mining project - but is it? What are the costs and efforts required to best quantify the sampling error due to nuggetty effect? After all, the main problem in Victorian gold mining ventures in the current decade is not the amount of gold available, but defi ning which portion of it can be converted to Ore Reserves or more so profitable gold bars. The author postulates that greater risk to the project lies in the geological interpretation and matching resource spatial parameters to mining methods, than the degree of uncertainty related to grade due to nuggetty gold. Recent experience in the Victorian goldfi elds is that the investor market has already severely discounted Mineral Resources reported in accordance with The JORC Code - so if they don't believe in the capacity to upgrade the resource why should we? To this end, Castlemaine Goldfi elds Ltd at its Ballarat gold project does not intend to estimate its gold mineralisation for public release, instead choosing to focus on the geological interpretation and mine planning elements. So with coarse gold deposits, is your Mineral Resource reported with The JORC Code a glass half full or half empty? Our mining forefathers in Victoria had no predictive tools which could define resources to any degree and yet were successful. By over emphasis on the definition of mineral resources and particularly the sampling error, are we ignoring the basics of cost control, solid geological interpretations and maximum mining flexibility. The paper gives details of the reasons why attention was directed towards the modification of flotation cells. The cell volume and impeller speeds were reduced, and it is estimated that the power consumption for lead and zinc flotation will be reduced by about 2·8 kWh per ton of ore treated, and that substantial savings will be made in maintenance costs. The metallurgical efficien.cy of the operation has been maintained and attention is now being directed towards the improvement of grades of concentrates and recoveries of metals.INTRODUCTIONIt was on 1st August, 1934, that the first Denver No. 21 flotation cells were operated in the treatment plant of The Zinc Corporation Limited, in a pilot Nant which had been installed to determine the economics of all-flotation as against the then existing gravity and flotation practice.The ore being mined at that time came from the lead lode which consists of a granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, manganhedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, manganocalcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only.A parallel lode, known as the zinc lode, was well developed at that time. The common lead lode gangue minerals-calcite, rhodonite, bustamite-were rare in the underground exposures of the zinc lode. Over the past five years, dedicated tertiary mining engineering programs have become financially unsustainable in Australia on the basis of undergraduate enrolments alone. The situation is worse in other minerals related disciplines and extends to the technical minerals education sector. This paper reviews the causes for the current situation. Indicators are presented which suggest that enrolment trends can no longer be attributed only to business cycles in the minerals industry but are also reflective of a fundamental shift in student interest in the sciences and resources based engineering disciplines. Reactive responses to changing trends are diluting and compromising the quality of mining engineering education. It is unlikely that the trends can be reversed or resisted. Tertiary minerals educators need to position themselves so that they can be responsive to on-going change. Two proposals are offered which aim to anchor mining engineering in a long-term sustainable manner. The proposals have a common educational component which is concerned with restructuring how mining engineering programs are presented and providing more flexible access to such programs. However, the two proposals have significantly different commercial components. The commercial component of first proposal is concerned with working within the traditional education framework of universities to endow a critical number of core staff positions. It effectively equates to fund raising. The second proposal is concerned with developing a stand-alone commercial operation around the education and research advantages of the global and multi-disciplinary university system. As a shareholder in this business, a university department would earn dividends that it could then use to support its education initiatives. This proposal provides a performance-based mechanism for supporting university minerals programs and has the potential to be cost-neutral. Both proposals are suited to resource sharing with a select number of international mining schools and to the incorporation of the other tertiary minerals disciplines under threat.

The recent description provided by Scott (1981) of the Ardlethan alteration systems is of particular interest as it draws attention to the analogy between Ardlethan and the porphyry tin systems of Bolivia (Sillitoe et aI, 1975).During 1978-1979 a parallel study of the mineralization confirmed that the extensive alteration pattern relates to a series of breccia pipes which provide access channelways for the mineralizing solutions (Clarke, 1979). Many of the results reported by Scott are difficult to interpret without this concept and this short discussion is intended to provide additional perspective to the proposed porphyry tin model.The breccia pipe systems are centred upon each of the major mineralized zones (Wild Cherry, Carpathia, Stackpool and White Crystal) and with the exception of the White Crystal collapse breccia the major pipes are of the hydrothermal intrusive type. They range considerably in size and shape and at least two ages of formation are revealed by their cross cutting relationships at the Stackpool, Carpathia and Ardwest regions. Individual pipes or groups of pipes have distinctive alteration/infill characteristics and the entire system can be viewed as a complex porphyry tin system evolving with time. The recognition of pipes of different types and ages reveals a situation considerably more complex than suspected by Scott, and hence both the geochemical data and modelling require reinterpretation.For instance, the geochemical data contained within Tables 2 and 3 (Scott, 1981) relate to two separate breccia pipes which correspond to the South Cherry and Ardwest ore zones respectively. Although it is probable that both pipes are temporarily identical it is important that the geochemical data be viewed in context. The brecciation is extremely difficult to recognize and it is probable that the chemical compositions given represent mixtures of altered fragments and rock flour, together with material precipitated from solution as matrix, along microfractures, within small vughs, etc.

The dispersion pattern of heavy metals in soil and water is a consequence of complex geophysical and geochemical processes. Metal release from mining sites and subsequent migration occur primarily through acid mine drainage and erosion of waste and tailings dumps. Water plays a significant role in heavy metal mobilisation. Whilst it acts as a storage buffer for the pollutants, it is also the medium in which most of the reactions take place, and is undoubtedly the most significant transport vector in the pollution process. The intrinsic properties of the acidic drainage such as chemical composition, speciation of key mineral components, redox potential and pH are master variables controlling metal release, transport, deposition, reactivity and availability to biota. The mobility of heavy metals is strongly increased by acidification from acid mine drainage, and the discharge of these metals into the receiving waters results in numerous physical, chemical and biological responses in which the environment can affect the metal and vice versa. The result is an overwhelming number of association/dissociation, substitution, adsorption/desorption reactions, giving rise to a complex migration pattern. The attempt to understand and describe the dispersion pattern of heavy metals is complicated by the nature and level of interaction between the geochemical and hydrodynamic processes that generate and control the movement of the pollutants in the geosphere. Transport models which can be used to predict the behaviour of metal pollutants in a natural environment are still in the initial phases of development and their application to real life situations is limited. The Biochemical Cycle adds another dimension to the mobility of heavy metals. Metals form an important component of the food chain for man and plants. Biological uptake of metals from the bedrock and soil by organisms can result in migration paths very difficult to follow. Biodegradation or assimilation is just a tip of the iceberg.

Ore reserve estimation is a procedure involving data collection, data storage and judgement and assumptions about geology mining and metallurgy. Calculations are based on these assumptions and an economic analysis on projected cash flows is carried out. Ore reserve estimation must therefore be subjective and will always depend on the extent to which the assumptions used in arriving at the estimate are correct. This paper is an attempt to summarise the many aspects that can contribute to ore reserve problems and to offer some suggestions on how to minimise these problems. For further details on specific concepts readers are referred to the detailed descriptions in the referenced papers.

Mining of narrow vein mineralisation, invariably depending on the mining method selected, involves the extraction of both ore and waste rock. The level to which mining of waste rock can be minimised depends on numerous factors, but particularly the thickness and dip of the deposit. Resue mining is a method of mining that allows split face firing within stopes to allow waste and ore to be mined separately, allowing dilution to be minimised. This paper examines the technique of resue firing and its applicability to the mining of narrow vein deposits. Particular emphasis is placed on the conditions in which resue mining presents a suitable option for mining of narrow veins.

This report on the 5th International Conference on Underground Space and Earth Sheltered Structures, which was held at the University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands, on 2 to 5 August 1992, was submitted to the members of the Australian Underground Construction and Tunnelling Association. The report describes the conference themes and outcomes and puts forward some observations about a growing world-wide interest in the promotion of appropriate uses of underground space. The report recommends the creation of an Australian centre for research to bring together a wide range of professional disciplines and to focus attention on the potential benefits of using underground space.

The Kwinana Nickel Refinery began operations in 1970 processing sulphide concentrates from Kambalda using the Sherritt Gordon pressure leach and hydrogen reduction process to produce nickel metal as powder and briquette. Over the years a number of changes have seen the refinery capacity increased from the original design capacity of 15 000 tpa nickel on an all concentrate feed to its current design capacity of 42 000 tpa nickel on an all matte feed. This paper outlines the changes in plant equipment and process for the most recent refinery expansion from 35 000 tpa to 42 000 tpa which have been implemented since 1992.

A universal grinding circuit model suitable for an arbitrary structure of flowsheet has been suggested. In this model classifiers and mills are described in a most general form. What puts the model in a class by itself is the automatic mass balancing in all streams of the circuit. In order to provide this a special classifier model is adopted. A previously published continuous steady state process model is used as a grinding model. Non-linearity of classifier model leads to a resultant circuit model which is equivalent to a non-linear integral equation. It complicates somewhat calculation algorithm in comparison to that of linear model, but provides a physically meaningful solution.

The rare earths market is relatively small and slow growing. Three applications using mainly cerics rare earths : catalysts, glass-ceramics and metallurgy are volume market. Inside this slow moving frame, fast growing niches can be found lamp phosphors, permanent magnets, fine cera- mics... There is no specific ore for one given element, and the natural occurence of any ele- ment is almost constant in both monazite and basnaesite. This creates the "balance problem" that consists in the best compromise between shortage and over production. The general trend of prices is downward in constant money. Despite this difficult environment (price decrease, technology changes, etc...) lots of company have always been attrac- ted by the rare earth business.

The fundamentals concepts of roof support are similar between coal mining, metal mining and tunnelling and yet there are different design approaches, different hardware, and different levels of site investigation. This should not be the case and this paper discusses the key geotechnical issues that should underlie all roof support design - the need to reinforce defects. A design method to build a beam in laminated rock under high horizontal stresses is presented. The method allows for changing rock strengths, defect properties and varying horizontal stresses. At one level the design can be implemented with design charts and tables. Lessons learnt during the implementation of the designs at 5 different mine sites are Discussed.

Dissolution of S02 into water-acetone mixtures results in the formation of 2-hydroxy-2-propane sulphonic acid. The pH, or acid strength, of water-carbonyl-S02 mix- tures can be controlled by varying the concen- tration of the carbonyl compound or the rate at which S02 is added to the water-carbonyl mixture during a reaction. The ease with which the acid strength of these mixtures can be controlled means that they have significant potential for use as a selective lixiviant. We have used water-acetone-S02 mixtures to selectively dissolve phosphate minerals in Christmas Island and Duchess phosphate ores and also uranium minerals in Yeelirrie uranium ore and Olympic Dam copper concentrate.

Many products and technologies have been developed from outcomes of research projects carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). When these products and technologies are applied to the design and optimisation of blasting, comminution and separation, improvements in profitability can be realised. In 1970 Alban Lynch promoted two practical ideas to improve plant operations: Ore and equipment properties can be separated allowing experience with one type of ore or equipment to be transferred to other types of ore and equipment. If this experience was encapsulated in a mathematical model, then these properties could be combined and used to simulate (ie to design and to optimise) complete mineral processing circuits. Many problems associated with scale-up from laboratory to industrial equipment could be eliminated by experimental work on full-scale equipment in the plant. Many JKMRC research projects have focussed on the development of models of unit operations in mineral processing and their application to process simulation. Models of comminution and classification developed at the JKMRC have been used since the early-1980s. Ore characterisation techniques developed to support these models are licensed world wide through JKTech. The application of comminution modelling techniques to blasting, which optimises the process feed size distribution is used in Mine-to-Mill? projects. The advances in the understanding and modelling of froth flotation over recent years have provided the opportunity for integrated ore characterisation and process optimisation from resource to product. JKMRC project outcomes often provide proven opportunities for the mineral industry to improve performance and productivity. JKTech was established in 1986 to commercialise and market the most promising outcomes and thus ensure their continuing availability to the mineral industry. These include: commercial software (JKSimMet, JKSimBlast and JKMetAccount); monographs (Comminution and Blasting); technologies (Mine-to-Mill? and flotation optimisation); and hardware products (JKFrothCam, JKJetLift? and the Mineral Liberation Analyser). This paper summarises these technologies and their benefits.

The Callie Underground Mine is located in the Tanami Desert 560 km Northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and is currently operated by Newmont Australia Limited with all mining activities carried out by Henry Walker Eltin. Callie was discovered in the region in 1991 with the box cut portal commenced south of the pit in 1995 and underground ore production commenced in 1998, after completion of the profitable Callie Open Pit. Development is currently occurring at depths of over 700 m with the decline currently below the 640 Reduced Level (RL) level (surface RL of 1400) with production haulage from 600 m below the surface. The combination of auto compression, a moderate geothermal gradient of 2¦C/100 m and diesel heat transfer causes the wet bulb temperature of intake air at the bottom of the mine to be typically 5¦C higher than on the surface. Wet Bulb temperatures can be up 5¦C higher again in active areas under secondary ventilation. During the 2002/2003 wet season many activities in the lower levels of the mine were stopped due to miners experiencing adverse heat related symptoms or the temperatures exceeding the Underground Heat Management Procedure stop job criteria of 32¦C wet bulb. To improve the working environment, combat the heat related illness and improve operational efficiency, a temporary 1.8 MW refrigerated cooling plant consisting of three 600 kW modules were installed underground to provide bulk air cooling for the lower levels of the mine during the 2003/2004 wet season. Several studies have been conducted in relation to future ventilation demands at Callie and all came to the conclusion, that some mine cooling will be necessary for Callie to meet the high production and development demands. This paper will describe the ventilation network at the Callie Underground operation focusing on the installation, operation and effectiveness of the temporary underground refrigeration plant.

The impact of computers on the mining industry has increased for the past twenty years in most parts of the world. The application of computers in the mining industry has been demonstrated in areas such as geological data analysis, ore reserve estimation, mine planning, and manpower training. There is also a general concern in this country regarding the computing background of graduating mining engineers from the Australian higher institutions of learning. This paper describes specific steps which have been taken at the Department of Civil and Mining Engineering, The University of Wollongong to provide adequate computing background to mining engineering graduates. Specific topics discussed include hardware and software available to students and how "computers" have been integrated into the mining engineering course.

Poorly designed sampling protocols generally result in high project risk by artificially increasing grade variability (ie the nugget effect). Sample collection, preparation and assay protocols that suit the ore type, together with QA/QC systems, will reduce this risk. All reporting codes (eg JORC, 2004) require the Competent Person to consider the quality and implication of sampling and assaying programs. High sampling errors beget higher project uncertainty; despite this fact, sampling does not receive the attention it deserves. The case studies presented show that many sampling issues frequently go unrecognised or unaddressed, resulting in poor project decisions during exploration through to feasibility and production. The overall conclusion is that correct sampling is critical to mining project success and that there is often a need for its optimisation.
