The rapid development of geometallurgy in the mining industry has occurred in relatively recent times. Its importance as an independent discipline in the mineral processing world has been emphasised and recognised. To a large degree, this is the result of a growing understanding of the ore type being processed and their application to provide better metallurgical responses in different mineral processing techniques. The development has matured from early progress through to geological knowledge and into the realm of the metallurgist and mining engineer. Working together, they have developed a powerful framework that will interpret a body of mineralisation into measurable properties.The integration of geometallurgy and operations has become of increasingly important due to improvement in understanding of an orebody as a natural system formed by a number of processes and with a definite fabric of mineralisation within different geological domain. These have to be taken into account when creating techniques that will enable operations to extract the valuable components from a distinct type of ore. Incorporation of such knowledge at an early stage of development, such as the feasibility stage significantly reduces the project risk.This paper is written from the unique perspective of a process engineer embedded within a geological team. It discusses issues such cross discipline communications and misconceptions and details the numerous tricks, traps and treasures of geometallurgy encountered during defining of the Seminco and Taysan resources.CITATION:Sola, C and Harbort, G, 2012. In order to realise seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) mining, the environmental baseline survey around targeted SMS mining areas and the creation of an environmental assessment technique suitable for quantifying the impacts of ocean floor mining are necessary. The targeted areas generally host large chemosynthetic communities in association with active hydrothermal venting. The ecosystem structure around the chemosynthetic communities has not been clarified yet in macro-scale or quantitatively. The systematic approach and plan for the baseline survey and the environmental assessmentÆs basic studies are introduced. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. As the Mount Morgan electrolytic chlorine plant is the first of its kind installed in Australia, and as the details of this method of producing chlorine have, up to the present time, been kept more or less secret all over the world, the author trusts that this paper may fill a gap in the technical literature of the subject.When an electric current is passed through a strong solution of sodium chloride the following reaction takes place -2 NaCl + 2 H 20 = 2 NaOH + C1 2 + H 2 Chlorine gas is liberated at the anode or entering pole of the current, while caustic soda and hydrogen are formed at the cathode or leaving pole of the current. If the two electrodes be simply immersed in a vessel containing salt and the current be turned on, there will be no result save slight smell of escaping chlorine gas. The passage of the current will have certainly split up the salt water according to the above equation, but as the products would be in juxtaposition they would immediately reunite, and the electrical energy would have been spent without any beneficial result having been obtained. An increase in the silver to gold ratio with increase in depth in the main ore shoot of the Crown-Crescent lode in the Emperor gold mine, Fiji, was found to be due mainly to vertical zoning of gold-silver tellurides. The zoning resulted from a two-stage sequence of ore mineralization.The application of some recent studies of the synthetic Au-Ag-Te system to natural gold-silver telluride assemblages is discussed.

On Wednesday 11th November, 1970, a series of violent explosions occur-- red within No.1 Basic Oxygen Steelmak- ing (B.O.S.) furnace at the Whyalla Works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., (B.H.P.) when the furnace was moved immediately prior to tapping. Water from a burnt out flux chute had flooded the bath while the furnace was tilted slightly towards the tapping side waiting to tap. Although no one was injured, dam- age in excess of $54 000 was caused to the hood and superstructure. The water hydrated the burnt dolomite refractory lining some of which sub- sequently collapsed exposing bare fur- nace shell over part of the cone.

A multi-layer feed-forward neural network was trained (using the error back-propagation algorithm) to learn a subset of rules designed to stabilise the performances of the copper flotation section of a complex sulphide processing plant and then tested in order to evaluate its expert performances. Two types of neural networks were compared: the classical ones, fully connected between one layer and the adjacents (with different architectures), and entropy networks, partially connected and generated according to a methodology that simplifies its building up. The advantages and drawbacks of both were analysed and compared with classic (rule based) expert systems.

An introductory review of the current grade control blasting techniques (selective mining strategies) used in the Eastern Goldfields has recently been undertaken. The survey was initiated and conducted by the Western Australian School of Mines. Four distinct selective mining strategies have been identified and a number of trends have been highlighted. Many operations, however, have developed techniques which use a hybrid method to suit the site conditions. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and experiences no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully reco- vered at the minimum overall operating cost. Due to this unified aim all of the grade control blasting techniques have many common design Features.

A sustained drop in the grade of Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver ore occurred in mid 1980. It was decided to increase concentrator throughput from 200 000 to 240 000 tonnes/four week period to maintain budget metal production. To achieve this increase whilst maintaining acceptable grinding and flotation performance, crushing plant final product size had to be reduced from 100%-13mm to 1000-11.2mm. The goal in the crushing plant was to achieve a 20% increase in throughput with a 20% decrease in the top size of the product. This was achieved by operational changes to improve plant availability and optimisation of the existing crushing and screening equipment Performance.

Good design is manifest in the eventual achievement of the operational objectives. In recent years a large number of Horizontal Belt Filters have been installed in the Australian mining and chemical industries. This paper deals briefly with the general background and advantages leading to the selection of this type of filter. After reviewing the many excellent papers being delivered here, it is apparent that we are all concerned with the same general subjects of commodity agreements, international cartels, and anti-trust problems as well as the impact of governments on resource management and minerals pricing. Accordingly, as a relative newcomer to the mining business, I feel that my most meaningful contribution can be made by taking a more philosophical look at the future of our system of democratic capitalism. Unfortunately, governments the world over seem intent on jeopardizing the high standards of living resulting from the Industrial Revolution and furthered by the emergence of its by-product, capitalism. This tendency is particularly germane to the basic natural resource field, since government regulations, controls, and intervention in mining far exceed even the constraints normally imposed on hard-pressed consumer-oriented businesses. Increasingly, many governments seem to feel that natural resources no longer belong to private individuals but rather are the property of the state to be developed in a regulated manner and usually in a way directly contrary to the functioning of the free market system.

Mining, like most other businesses, is based upon capital assets; and the primary cap- ital of any mining company is its ore reserve. A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

The presence of clays, in particular clay slime, may complicate many mining operations. Clay slime particles may possess a negative or positive charge depending upon the pH in the process and their presence may lead to reduced recoveries in flotation processes. It is assumed that slime particles may adsorb onto the surfaces of the minerals to be floated and by doing so, reducing the efficacy of the flotation chemicals. In this work it is shown that addition of a small amount of dispersant, either a polyacrylic acid or an anionic polyphenolic polymer, increases the recovery of copper and gold, both in laboratory trials and in plant testing of an ore with high clay content. Measurements of adsorption isotherms reveal that the tested dispersants show preferential adsorption towards the clay minerals present, suggesting that the improved recovery upon dispersant addition occurs by prevention of attachment of clay slime particles onto primarily chalcocite but also chalcopyrite.CITATION:Seaman, D R, Lauten, R A, Kluck, G and Stoitis, N, 2012. Iron ore mineralisation in the Paraburdoo environs is known to extend almost continuously over a strike length of 55 kilometres. Six formations of the Mount Bruce Supergroup con- tain high grade mineralisation in varying degrees of importance. Ore is currently being mined from the Joffre and Dales Gorge Members of the Brockman Iron Formation, with smaller, less significant amounts, occasionally taken from the lowermost units of the Weeli Wolli Formation and the upper parts of the Mount McRae Shale. Regional mapping has demonstrated the existance locally of a major unconformity at the base of the Wyloo Group sediments out- cropping south of the minesite. The basal con- glomerates at the unconformity are sometimes mineralised at Paraburdoo. A supergene enrich- ment process controlled by structure, strati- graphy and topography is the only one which can satisfactorily explain the disposition and chemistry of the Paraburdoo iron orebodies.
