In early 1987 Minproc acquired a license from the inventor to engineer and construct acid plants incorporating the Fattinger technology. The process offers a simple and reliable method of producing sulphuric acid from metallurgical off gases at significantly lower capital and operating costs than the more familiar contact process. The process also offers the simultaneous production of nitric acid, if the NOx content of the off gases is high enough. A development of this latter process has other applications within the minerals industry, particularly in conjunction with refractory gold ore preoxidation.

During the past 18 months several import- ant hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in the Dampier Sub-basin, which is a sedimentary area lying entirely offshore from the Precambrian Pilbara Block in the southern part of 'he Northwest Shelf of Western Australia. This sub-basin is a major sedimentary downwarp forming a northern extension to the Carnarvon Basin. This extension is bounded to the north by the De Grey Nose, separating it from the Beagle Sub-basin. To the south the Dampier Sub-basin merges with the Barrow Sub- basin. Extensive seismic data combined with results from exploration drilling show that the Dampier Sub-basin is a complex depositional basin containing over 20,000 feet of sediments which are mainly Triassic to Recent in age. Tectonically the sub-basin can be divided into seven main structural elements. In a northwest to southeast direction these are the Rankin Platform, the Kendrew Trough, the Madeleine- Dampier Trend, the Lewis Trough, the Legendre- Rosemary Trend, the Enderby Fault Zone and the broad Pilbara Shelf. Permian sediments were encountered in only one well drilled to date in the sub-basin, but Triassic and younger sediments are extensive. The smaller mining company with full ownership of, or participation in, a mining project is generally unable to obtain funding as easily as the major mining house. While the equity market remains the main funding source for small projects, debt fund- ing options are becoming more available. Many international banks possess in-house mine fin- ancing expertise which can assist the smaller company in financing its share of project development. A clear understanding is necessary of both the benefits and limitations of bank funding, to ensure that all potential sources of funds are properly considered and integ- rated into the financial plans of the smaller mining companies.

Relationships between lead blast furnace performance and the composition and size distribution of sinter were determined from analysis of lead blast furnace operating data. Sintering plant practice was subsequently modified and substantially improved furnace performance resulted.

The strategy of adjusting operating conditions to maintain optimum process performance as the feed quality varies - adaptive optimisation - is being investigated by computer simulation of chemical processes for the treatment of ores. Those ore-process systems that are most likely to yield substantial benefits from adaptive optimisation are being identified as a guide to the selection and development of systems for practical application. The generalised mathematical representation of the cost structure, ore quality variations, process kinetics, reactor characteristics and operating variables for ore-process systems is described. Results are summarised for temperature, reagent concentration or residence time as the manipulated variable. For almost all systems, adaptive optimisation was economically beneficial, although a few exceptions have been identified where there is a significant synergistic effect between poor-performance and good-performance materials in a blended feed. The sensitivity of the benefits of adaptive optimisation to a range of economic and technical factors is summarised.

The grinding characteristics of quartz which is normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area was examined in a stainless steel laboratory size ball-mill in the presence of inorganic and organic surface active reagents. The cationic species considered were Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ca2+, and the anions were CO? and S2 as these are normally present during the process of grinding of gold ores in the region. The organic surfactants examined were K-amyl- xanthate, dodecylamine-hydrochloride and the Grinding Aid XFS-4272 manufactured by Dow Chemical The study was primarily based on an examination of the electrokinetic properties of quartz surface in the presence of the grinding reagents. Zeta potential at different reagent additions and pH values in the presence of individual reagents were examined and the corresponding grinding charcteristics determined. At the present stage of the Rundle oil shale project planning, with depressed world oil prices, early development of the resource is unlikely. However, this postponement is being used to carry out technical studies required to evaluate alternative rehabilitation strategies and establish a sound environmental planning basis. Major technical data from the following studies are reviewed: Resource: - mine planning; material characterisation; retorting; geology; Environmental: - meteorology; surface water management; laboratory and field leachates; revegetation; waste characterisation; hydraulic and chemical modelling; dust suppression; plant/water interactions; and impact evaluation. These studies have shown that topsoil replacement, seeding mixtures, fertilizer application rates, subsoil quality and handling, waste pile slope and most importantly soil water storage are key factors in successful rehabilitation.

These include shaft pilot holes, exploration drilling, mine service holes and drilling beneath surface structures and obstacles. The prime objectives are to increase accuracy and reduce time, cost and environmental disturbance.

The Engineering Chemistry Division of the Government Chemical Laboratories of WA initiated an ongoing investigation into the possible utilisation of diatomites of this State. The work has shown that local diatomites can be beneficiated by hydro or pneumatic cyc- lone separator circuitry and that the better quality head materials can be upgraded by straight and flux calcination and associated processing to the equivalent of premium grade imported products. Western Australian diatomites vary con- siderably in quality, and the degree to which they can be upgraded and the yield of useful product are influenced by the proportion of impurities and the size, type, and degree of fragmentation of contained diatoms. Conseq- uently careful assessment of ore deposits will be necessary in order to relate ore reserves to planned production. The viability of commercial production from Western Australian resources would hinge on the establishment of markets - largely ex- port - capable of supporting a production level of the order of 30,000 tonnes per annum.

Teller Underground Mine was established to extract ore from the Middle Vale Reef located on the eastern flank of Telfer Main Dome.The mine is located below a 150 m deep open pit operation. The ore body is shallow dipping highly structured, and is a main aquifer in quite difficult ground conditions.In respect of these conditions it was determined to access the orebody using an adaptation of coal mining and hard rock mining methods, with support being achieved using a combination of island pillars, rock bolts and timber stalls.The paper will describe these methods in more detail, then discuss the successes and failures of these methods when put into practice. As well, it will detail several factors whose influences were found to be greater than previously expected and stress the importance of good geotechnical advice.

The Ravenswood Batholith in the Charters Towers -Ravenswood area of north Queensland, was formed by three main episodes of granitoid emplacement between the Early Ordovician and the Early Permian. Granite to granodiorite plutons of the first phase of intrusions in the Early to Middle Ordovician, probably formed by partial melting of a thin continental crust as a result of the emplacement of mafic material derived from the mantle. Some of this mafic material subsequently intruded the Ordovician granitoids as gabbro to diorite complexes. The early granitoids were deformed and metamorphosed prior to emplacement of second phase granodiorite to tonalite plutons in the Late Silurian to Early Devonian. These later plutons have generally not been deformed or recrystallised. Geochemical and isotopic data suggest the Siluro-Devonian plutonism may have been generated by a partial melting of the tholeiitic material emplaced in the lower crust during the Ordovician. A third intrusive phase consists principally off Late Carboniferous to Early Permian gabbro-granite complexes, high level granite to granodiorite complexes, and rhyolitic plugs and diatremes near the batholith margin. Gold mineralisation in the batholith is associated with two major events: mesothermal vein formation in the Early Devonian and porphyry types in the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian.

Over the past several years, copper prices have surged from under a dollar to over three dollars a pound. However, the long-run trend in real copper prices since at least the early 1970s has been sharply downward. While many now contend that the long-run trend in real copper prices is now upward, the result of structural changes in this market, others are sceptical. Nor is copper unique; the prices for a number of other metals, including aluminium, iron ore, lead, nickel and zinc, have followed similar patterns. This paper examines the forces behind short-run and long-run trends in metal prices. It first focuses on the short run, where it argues that shifts in demand are largely behind changes in prices. It then turns to the long run, where it concludes that production costs and supply largely govern price trends. Finally, it explores several implications of these findings, including those for diversification and market risk, for forecasting mineral prices, for assessing the growth of metal demand in China and elsewhere on metal prices, and for changes in the long-run price trends.

Organic dyes such as nigrosine and sun yellow act as depressants for carbonaceous particles in the, flotation of sulphide ores. Depression is achieved when initially hydrophobic organic surfaces are made hydrophilic by preferential adsorption of dye molecules. Experimental studies, mainly on Mount Isa ores, indicate that dyes are adsorbed as planar anionic micelles attached to carbonaceous surfaces by van der Waals and ion exchange attractive interactions. Relationships appear to exist between the amount of organic matter on the surface of ground particles, the surface area of the particles, the "saturation" adsorptions of dyes, and the degree of difficulty experienced during froth flotation.

An integrated computer software system has been developed by Fluor Australia for modelling, mine planning and production scheduling of single or multi-strata deposits. Modelling of both quantitative and qualitative variables (e.g., thickness, basal elevation, density, grade/ash content) is performed via continuous, minimum curvature surface representations. These may be developed from inverse distance weighting or geostatistical kriging interpolation techniques in conjunction with bicubic spline surface interpolation. The modelling process, rather than being purely mathematical, incorporates facilities for reflecting structural geology interpretations (e.g., faulting, pinchouts) and geological boundary conditions (e.g., subcrop and outcrop). Volumetric programs provide the facility for continuous integration over models (at any specified integration increment) for any number of specified irregular polygonal panel areas or regular rectilinearly defined block plan areas. Multi-variable integration is available, incorporating any or all operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to provide multi-strata tonnages, etc., (e.g., Volume 1 * density 1 + Volume 2 density 2). These programs provide true three-dimensional integration with the facility for calculating results on an area by area, level by level, strata by strata as well as overall basis.

A biological column leach testwork program was undertaken on a chalcocite ore. Three tests were conducted in all, using 65 in x 100 mm columns in three sections. The tests were started with varying acid strengths and inoculated with bacterial solutions from previous column testwork. The leaching of Cu was found to occur in three stages. These stages consisted of direct acid leaching, bacterial oxidation and ferric iron leaching. These leaching stages can most easily he described through the examination of not only Cu dissolution but also Fe dissolution and its subsequent oxidation and precipitation. The p11 of the system was found to he critical in establishing and maintaining the bacterial leaching system. The oxidation potential was seen to he influenced by the leaching system as the oxidation states altered. Test variables such as, 02, COz, and temperature were all found to influence the system. Final copper recoveries were in excess of 90 per cent in each column test over a leach time ranging from 211 to 328 days. Given similar leach conditions are applied, the application of this technology to site is expected to give comparable results.

Until 1937, the mining of ore was carried out by conventional methods, using pneumatic drills and standard drill steel. The adoption of the diamond drill, formerly used for exploration work, for blast hole drilling in stopes, was first developed by Noranda Mines Limited, Noranda, Quebec, although it had been used previously in Northern Ontario and Western United States, to remove weak pillars and ore remnants left by conventional methods. Previous to the adoption of the diamond drill method at Noranda, a sub-level benching system of stoping was used. Sub-levels were driven at 35 ft. intervals and the benches drilled off by pneumatic drills using sectional steel. Results were very satisfactory, in sulphide ore, where the drilling was comparatively easy, but in the harder rhyolitestopes the footage drilled per machine-shift was only half of that obtained in the sulphide stopes, and owing to the high gauge loss, there was often difficulty in drilling holes to the required depth. This led to trials with the diamond drill for this type of work. While the cost per foot was more than with sectional steel, an appreciable saving in development work could be made by increasing the sublevel interval from 35 ft. to 60 ft., and stope widths from 60 to 100 ft. This saving, together with the increase in blasting efficiency, resulted in a substantial reduction in overall costs.CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONWhile long diamond drill blast-hole mining has widespread application, there are certain conditions which appear to be desirable, if not absolutely necessary, for its successful use.

Croesus Shaft is one of two operating shafts on North Kalgurli Mines Limited's Fimiston lease.At the cessation of gold mining in 1974, the workings at Croesus were allowed to flood. Large quantities of deslimed mill tailings used in filled stopes were washed into the shaft and surrounding drives, making re-access very difficult. The shaft has been desludged from the 9 level to the 15 level, and a loading pocket installed below the 14 level. A vacuum lift unit was installed underground to facilitate the removal of the slime and spillage.Stoping at Croesus was hampered by poor drainage, pumping, and shaft availability. These difficulties have been overcome by utilising an open stoping system for the relatively steep, narrow, high grade stopes. Open stoping has proved to be effective and economic.
