As part of the response to the increased demand for products such as iron ore, coal and gold many resource companies have identified the need to develop strategies focused on attracting high demand professionals and retaining current employees in the business. Recent graduates are entering a time where they can expect high starting salaries, attractive benefits and lifestyle options. At the same time high work expectations and large demands on both personal and professional development will also be the norm. Some of the challenges faced may include high demands on performance, working with limited resources, long hours, and tackling unfamiliar areas of work with little guidance. However, managing your career and these challenges effectively can give you valuable experience in a short amount of time. By offering situations from my relatively short, yet active, career in the mining industry during these boom times I will raise some key points on how to best leverage your commodity and make the most of a bullish market.

Many hydrometallurgical processes produce large amounts of acid waste. This is illustrated by the copper S/X-E/W process which produces a bleed from the electrolysis tank house in the form of a concentrated sulphuric acid stream. Currently, the bleed stream is necessary to remove impurities such as iron that decreases the efficiency of the electrowinning process. However, this comes at a high financial cost owing to large quantities of make-up sulphuric acid required. A process has thus been developed with Zeneca Specialties (UK), ICI Australia and Gunpowder Copper Co at the University of Melbourne for the recovery of sulphuric acid from copper tank house bleed liquor. The recovery process uses the method of solvent extraction. Solvent extraction has the advantage of being a well-established technology in the mining industry and will reduce the environmental impact of the S/X-E/W process, as all additional chemicals can be completely recycled. During the 1960s chalcocite ore was mined from the Black Rock open cut. A large amount of this uneconomic material was not treated by the No 3 Concentrator at the time and as a consequence a surface stockpile was created which contained 750 000 tonnes of material at an average of 1.5 per cent copper.Laboratory trials indicated that due to oxidation, an average of 25 per cent of the copper was water soluble and the remaining copper was leachable using a sulphate/ferriclbacterial leach. On the basis of these trials it was decided to investigate the feasibility of producing copper via a leach SX-EW process. The investigation proved the process was feasible, so began the design, construction and commissioning of a 10 tpd (cathode copper) Copper Leach SX-EW Pilot Plant. CMPS Pty Limited in a joint venture with John Holland Engineering Pty Limited were awarded the turnkey contract for the design, construction and commissioning of the Pilot Plant.

Comalco's Bell Bay smelter produces some 94 000 t.p.a. of primary aluminium in the form of foundry alloys, extrusion billet and rolling blocks. The extrusion billet and rolling block are produced by a process, in which molten aluminium is poured into an open ended water cooled mould of the required shape. The bottom of the mould is initially closed off by a dummy or starting block. Primary cooling takes place at the mould wall and secondary cooling is achieved by direct water sprays onto the out side shell of the product. Careful preparation of the molten alumin- ium is essential if stringent alloy specific- ation limits are to be met. Optimum casting temperature must be maintained within a narrow range and metal cleanliness is important to ensure a consistent product. The Australian gold industry has made large steps forward in the last few years. This progress has been driven by improvements in mining and processing technology, the high price of gold and by a favourable legislative, political and taxation environment. This paper concentrates on improvements in gold project development, process engineering and technology as seen by BHP Engineering, Perth, Australia.The paper describes technical aspects of successful gold project development including metallurgical testwork, feasibility studies, choice of process flowsheet (gravity, heap leach, carbon in pulp (CIP), carbon in leach (CIL) or other routes). It sets out our views on plant design, plant construction, procurement and project management.A case study for a small plant recently completed in the Philippines is presented as a solution to the problems often encountered in treating quartz vein gold deposits.

Lignin grouts are cheap and easy to get. They have some desirable properties, but they aag less used now because environmental pollution is often caused by Cr from the lignochrome component of the grout. Their usefulness was researched in an earlier paper on lignin as a grout from other viewpoints. A non-toxic grout FUL was made composed of furfural, urea and lignin. After initial tests, including tests by spinning regression design, some response equations in which FUL's properties are described were obtained. Optimum formulations have been established by using optimization methods based on response equations. The engineering quality was assured by formulations whose properties were measured in further tests. The mechanical feature of gelling sand was measured by means of triaxial tests. This provides a basis for using FUL grout in-situ. Finally, an in-situ experiment on FUL was completed successfully. The results were that cracks in stratum were filled or blocked, the gelling of FUL had high strength, and low permeability and consolidation were achieved.

The mechanism of flotation of potash ores with long chain primary amines has been assessed. Since at high electrolyte concentration in saturated brine the electrical double layers of the interacting particles and bubbles are entirely compressed, the induction time measurements confirmed the elimination of kinetic factors associated with the energy barriers opposing particle-to-bubble attachment under such conditions as could be expected. The lack of the kinetic hindrance resulted in the correlation found between the contact angles on the KCl surfaces and the sylvite flotation measured under the same physico-chemical conditions. The iep values and acid numbers obtained for various Esso oils tested as extenders in the flotation of coarse potash ore fractions confirmed the base oils with high content of nitrogen-bearing compounds to be good extender oils. The performance of such oils could further be improved by dissolving in them a small amount of long-chain aliphatic amine.

A company tax rate based on profitability return, or as more commonly expressed, a resource rent taxation scheme has been intro- duced at various stages in the past by both Australian state and commonwealth governments. At present a number of overseas countries are applying this form of legislation to the taxing of sections of their mining industries. Within this study, ways in which this type of tax has been used are examined. The form in which the tax can be applied varies. 1. It can be selectively or universally applied. 2. The base on which economic return is calculated can be selected in a number of ways. 3. It can start operating only when high profit levels exist, or alternatively be the basis of a total taxation scheme. The implication for the Australian mining industry of the introduction of different types of resource rent taxation schemes is assessed within the context of previously enacted systems.

The technological advancement in computing power and the increasing demand for information processing systems spread throughout many aspects of a corporation's business activities has revolutionised management information systems departments. This revolution is manifest in the proliferation of mini-computers and micro-processors as well as the planned or unplanned migration from centralised processing to distributed processing. The total data processing investment in people, hardware, software and telecommunications has reached a high level in many organisations. Therefore, the cost of inadequate planning or ad hoc growth of systems can be considerable. The concept of MIS systems planning has gained adherence in recent years; however, there appears to be a wide diversity in the effectiveness and quality of corporate systems plans. To be effective a systems plan must have the support and concurrence of executive management of an organisation. A disciplined planning approach to systems together ,with the involvement of senior user management as well as MIS management is necessary to develop a satisfactory systems plan that forms the basis of a corporation's data processing strategy.

Alliance Gold Mines was established in the early part of 1994 to acquire the assets of Diamin Resources NL at Maldon, Victoria. These comprised Exploration Licence 3422, some 20 sq km in area and enclosing the main part of the Goldfield, and a CIP plant - with a nominal capacity of 250 000 tpa - which was commissioned in 1988. Between 1988 and 1992 Diamin had mined - by open pit methods - and milled around one million tonnes of low grade gold ore, and recovered 55 000 ounces of gold. By 1992 the known shallow resources had been depleted. Historical gold production from the Maldon field is about 1.75 million ounces, at the surprising average recovered grade of 28 g/t. The last significant mine closed in 1926: since then there has been no comprehensive exploration program, though Lone Star Exploration NL tested part of the field for shallow open-pittable resources in the 1970s and Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd carried out widely-spaced drilling on the three main reefs from 1979 to 1982. Diamin (1983 - 1994) commenced a careful compilation of old mine records and newspaper clippings, and drilled several cored holes.

The control of spontaneous combustion in spoil piles is an area of concern for a number of open cut coal mines. Spontaneous combustion in spoil may occur when carbonaceous waste materials are exposed to air. In large piles, the relatively high voidage within the pile may allow sufficient movement of air through the pile to sustain oxidation and heat generation. Over the past decade, ACARP and CSIRO have funded a number of projects aimed at providing a better understanding of the causes of spontaneous combustion in spoil piles and the development of control strategies. Work has focused on prevention measures but has also considered measures available to deal with well-developed fires. Field, laboratory and numerical modelling methods have been brought to bear on the issues. Individual projects have addressed: causes of spontaneous combustion including the relative reactivities of mine waste materials; the use of cover layers to prevent spontaneous combustion; the use of flyash grout to control an active fire; the emissions of air pollutants; and the emission of greenhouse gases. This paper provides a description of the work carried out to date with an emphasis on the major findings of the research and its application to open cut mines.

At the Huasco Pellet Plant of Compa±fa de Aceros del Pacffico, Chile, the production of iron concentrate suitable for pellet feed from a low-grade iron ore was technically evaluated. In this study, three treating schemes including comminution, magnetic concentration and flotation in pneumatic cells were tested. The best results were obtained at the laboratory scale by flotation technique using Lilaflot D 817 M as the collector without using any depressant. The operational parameters were determined including pneumatic flotation, and three circuits, two including magnetic pre-concentration, with the low-grade iron ore. The best results were obtained by size reduction at 80 per cent under 325 Tyler mesh, three steps of magnetic concentration and three steps of flotation in pneumatic cells. The magnetic concentrate contained 63.02 per cent of iron and 6.6 per cent of silica, and after the pneumatic flotation the iron content increased up to 70.18 per cent and silica decreases to 1.07 per cent with 78.78 per cent of iron recovery at a weight recovery of 31.89 per cent. Therefore, it is possible to use low-grade iron ore to produce pellet feed from magnetic concentrates by using reverse iron flotation in pneumatic cells.

FINANCE FOR EXPLORATION Two factors have basic importance in relation to the availability of finance: the apparent success of continuing exploration activity and tax concessions. It is not proposed to discuss the effect of existing tax incentives, as these have already been outlined and are generally accepted as being reasonably attractive; certainly not a deterrent to possible investors. However, it is obvious that the greater the tax incentives, the greater the amount of money that will be attracted, and the wider the number of people who can be brought into the pool. If, as is suggested, the chance of discovery is related to expenditure and effort, then the more money attracted, the better the prospects of significant finds. It is probably correct to assume that the largest expenditure in mining will come from, or be induced by, people expert in the field, people who are fully aware of the risks and benefits and perhaps making conservative decisions because of this awareness. Insofar as the general public is concerned, while in the first burst of enthusiasm it will frequently follow any promoter, in the long run it too will become more sophisticated and will strongly support only those promoters and companies of good repute and proven record.

Both innovation and excellence are desirable attributes of education, as they are also markers in the progression of the human race, but how attainable are they? The interaction of minerals and humanity provides a special insight into the development of both criteria, from the discovery that chert cuts, through the Bronze Age and the first use of metal alloys for implements, to using coal, oil and uranium as sources of fuel. However, there have been many hiccups along the way, where excellence in one respect has meant disaster in another. Examples are in the exploitation of asbestos, and in traditionally poor work practices in mining, both contributing to the widespread public belief that minerals and mining are ecologically undesirable. Yet is this perception based on the unrealistic expectation of innovation and excellence being simultaneous qualities of any given process? Common sense born of experience indicates that the journey from one, to the other, is usually a long and often tedious process, with much trial and error before excellence is attained. In our time, the partnership between academia and industry is the usual pathway to achieve it. Even so, we should take care that innovation does not become overwhelmed by the pursuit of excellence: as history clearly demonstrates, humanity depends upon both.

Geosynclines have been well studied for many years, but very little has been written about the concepts of sedimentary basins in spite of the vast amount of data available. They have been regarded, perhaps, as well- understood intuitively, and therefore not worthy of study. Many of the fundamental concepts of geology were developed during the 19th Century with the construction of coal mines, canals and railways. It was a happy chance that led railway engineers in the early days to think that trains could not climb any but the smallest gradient, so, in Britain at -least, numerous railway cuttings and tunnels were made. These exposed to view and study, in a better form than Nature usually provides, a great deal of interesting geology. Because of the lack of literature about the concepts of sedimentary basins, it is not possible to be sure what the early geologists thought. It seems that sedimentary basins were regarded as recording a history of subsidence during the early stages, when a transgressive sequence accumulated; and a history of uplift during the later stages, when a regressive sequence accumulated. It seemed axiomatic that the age of folding and faulting was younger than the rocks folded or Faulted.

Zinc and lead sulphide flotation con centrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% Cd are roasted on an updraught sinter machine at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corp- oration Pty. Limited to provide sinter for simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead in an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.). The major portion (about 85%) of cad- mium in concentrate feed to the Sinter Plant is eliminated with sinter fume and is rec- overed by weak acid leaching in the Cadmium Plant'followed by counter-current decantat- ion, ion exchange concentration, precipitat- ion of cadmium sponge and partial refining to caustic refined cadmium metal. Cadmium not eliminated during sintering is volatilised in the I.S.F. and subsequently recovered as zinc alloy by distillation in the zinc ref- ining columns of the Zinc Refluxer. The partially refined cadmium metal and cadmium- zinc alloy are blended as feed to the cadm- ium refining column where separation and recovery of cadmium is effected. Condensate from the column is further refined under caustic soda flux and cast into anode shapes. Production is 200 t.p.a. at 85% recovery of cadmium in concentrates. The writers of these notes, having conducted some tests on the steam consumption of air compressors under varying conditions, believe that the detailed results of such tests will be of interest to the members of the Institute, and may lead to the contribution of further and more valuable information, of benefit both to manufacturers and users of this class of machinery-to the manufacturer in that he frequently has the opportunity of giving a very thorough test to the machine in the shop, and-tothe user or purchaser by making clear to him what may be reasonably demanded of a high-class machine. It must be remembered that, though of the highest importance, a low steam consumption is but one of the many features of a high-classmachine; for the present, however, it has been considered advisable to confine the paper chiefly to the first-mentioned aspect, with such information concerning the air ends as is obtained along with the steam consumption tests. Unfortunately, too few of these tests are conducted, and but few results are published, therefore the writers feel that no apology is needed in bringing their results before the members.Some nine months ago the Brilliant Extended G. The Tavua Power Proprietary Ltd. was created in 1936 for the purpose of supplying electric power, compressed air and water to the mining field.The original share capital was subscribed on a two-third:one-third basis by the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. and Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L. In 1940, Fiji Mines Development Ltd. (later changed to Dolphin Mines Ltd.) was admitted as a shareholder, and, in 1950, a further change occurred. The present shareholding in the Company is as follows:A central power station was decided upon to reticulate power and compressed air over the whole field and building commenced in May 1936.The original plant comprised three Belliss and Morcom diesel generating sets 770 b.h.p. 525 kW 3,300 V, 3 phase, 50 cycle; one Belliss and Morcom diesel compressor set 2,09'0 cu. ft. of free air per min. at 90 lb. gauge 300 r.p.m., and two small Ruston-Holman diesel compressor sets each of 525 cu. ft. capacity taken over from Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and the then existing Koroere Gold Mining Company.BuildingThe original building was 130 ft. long by 47 ft. wide with an elevated switchgear annex on the west side from which a clear view of the engine room is available.

An innovative, biological treatment process has been designed by MSE Technology Applications, Inc to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). A field-scale demonstration is being conducted under the Mine Waste Technology Program using water flowing from a historic mine in Montana. A successful demonstration of an in situ process will allow it to be employed at numerous other abandoned or remote mines, which discharge AMD, an acidic, metal-contaminated water. Conventional treatment methods are costly and are often impossible to use at remote locations. MSEÆs technology uses a biological system to clean up AMD. The In situ Passive Biological Treatment Process utilises nonpathogenic bacteria, which are able to neutralise acidic mine water and remove contained toxic metals. These bacteria live within a series of pile-type reactors inside the mine. The bacteria are fed inexpensive waste products. The resulting discharge is clean water flowing from the mine. This presentation will show that this technology offers a natural cleanup method for the nationÆs numerous abandoned mines. Work on this project was conducted under Interagency Agreement No DW899388-70-01-1 between the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy (DOE), and was performed at the Western Environmental Technology Office through the DOE National Environmental Technology Laboratory (DOE Contract No. DE-AC22-96EW96405).

This contribution by. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy has three main thrusts. First, an Institute (and industry) view on academia and the need for more entrepreneurship at top academic levels, second the need to lift our technological game, and third, professionalism and the perceived role of mineral industry education. While I will deal with each of these separately they are of course inter- related and can be brought together under the frequently used, but insufficiently practised title, "communications". First then, The Institute and industry view of academia. There are some academics in the audience and I imagine they may wish to reply to my remarks with an academic view of industry. That is not unreasonable. Like all human institutions, academic institutions vary in quality and characteristics. Some are successful and some less so. Some historically are well renowned. Others that were once successful schools have declined. Lesser known schools have grown into prominence. What is it that sets apart 'good' highly regarded schools from those that are not so well regarded? It comes down to one main ingredient - "leadership". The strong mining schools in the past 100 years have been strong because they have had outstanding and clearly identified leaders. Strong clearly identified leadership has always had rapport with, and the support of the industry. The two go hand- in-hand, each nourishing and supporting the Other.
