Asteroids contain an abundance of valuable resources such as: nickel, cobalt, gold, platinum and rhodium. Whilst the consumption of mineral resources on Earth continues to deplete, meteoroids have the potential to become a significant source of minerals. Even though the minerals content of asteroids may be relatively high, the valuable minerals are more likely to be only a small portion of the total ore present in the main body. The ores must, therefore, be processed to extract the metals of interest from the waste. Existing terrestrial technologies rely on manipulating the physical and chemical properties of minerals. The application of these techniques to asteroids processing, however, is not straightforward due to the presence of different conditions such as zero gravity and lack of water in space. Tandem row stator arrangements are common in the last stage of multirow, gas turbine compressors. Tandem row stators, or stator and de-swirler vane combinations are used to relieve the loading on the stator but ensure axial flow leaving the compressor. In this paper a standard 40” (1016 mm) ventilation fan in the Air Blow Fan’s range is modified to utilise the plate support struts on the barrel to relieve the aerodynamic loading on the aerofoil stator. Performance maps for both versions of the fan were generated using computational fluid dynamics and are compared across a wide range of rotor setting angles showing a clear advantage of approximately 2 per cent in efficiency for the tandem blade design. In addition, the area of high efficiency that represents the practically usable area of the map extends over a greater area in terms of flow rate and total pressure rise.

Mass mining methods have become the mining industry’s preferred way of extracting most of the world’s most important metal and mineral commodities. Given the rapidly increasing global demand for commodities, the requirement to increase the contribution of some of these (eg copper and gold) from underground sources also continues to grow. In the case of copper this contribution is needed by a number of major producers to supplement production from their ageing deep open pits. Satisfying this increased demand will require the design, construction and operation of more effective, higher capacity and larger scale mines which, in turn, will require enhanced mass underground mining techniques such as block caving (BC), panel caving (PC) and sublevel caving (SLC).It is now widely accepted that future discoveries of orebodies, which will be developed using these methods, are almost certainly to be much deeper than the deposits presently being mined in this way and made more challenging because of the likelihood that the associated grades may be much lower than currently mined. The design and mining of future large-scale cave mines (supercaves) will become crucial in order to extract full value from such deposits. An essential prerequisite of this will be a much improved knowledge of the deposit, ie Total Deposit Knowledge. In this context, Total Deposit Knowledge is the characterisation of the ore deposit and its surrounds at all scales and includes; rock type (lithology), the spatial orientation of a range of geological features or discontinuities, rock mass fabric knowledge, metal grade and distribution data, geometallurgical data (including alteration), geo-hydrology, permeability and porosity. This is the information that will be used, as now, to delineate geological and geotechnical domains and construct models, but with outcomes superior to those presently available. From this information better-informed feasibility study design decisions and performance predictions must be made. In summary more geological information and analysis is required and this needs to be aligned to potential mining and processing requirements much earlier in the project than commonly occurs.

It is well documented that drill and blast outcomes affect the downstream mining processes of loading, hauling, crushing and grinding but it can also significantly impact on mine profitability via dilution, recovery percentage, lump generation (iron ore), fines generation (coal, iron ore), coal loss and final wall stability. Drill and blast must therefore be optimised to improve the overall profitability via positively impacting on productivity and saleable product generation. It is however, difficult to achieve this because of the complexity of the number of parameters that must be integrated and managed across the entire mine value chain, ie the concept of æMine to MillÆ. This paper highlights, via a simple case study, the need to have a mineÆs drill and blast system both in control (so that it is predictable to a high degree) and with minimal variability (so the design actually makes it into the field). This type of management control is essential prior to optimisation work being undertaken. The æTeam ApproachÆ is discussed to illustrate the methodology of achieving drill and blast optimisation. A case study is presented to illustrate the potential benefits of this approach which in this mine represented a 27 per cent reduction in powder factor with the downstream functions achieving higher productivity with the same or reduced maintenance costs. It is essential for Australian mineÆs to implement the appropriate management strategies and experienced personnel placement to ensure that their mineÆs drill and blast system is correctly managed to facilitate the optimisation of profit. Without this, the Australian mining sector will become increasingly uncompetitive.

In the mine of this study, cemented hydraulic backfill is placed under the form of a slurry at a percentage of solid by weight varying from 50 to 65 per cent. This slurry settles and cures in the stope. During this process an important amount of water must be drained from the stope. Field observations in the case studied here show that the geometry of the drains system has a significant impact on the drainage of the stopes. The mode of filling produces a backfill showing an evident stratification typical of a sedimentation process. In situ observations on this material show that this stratification translates into a very strong heterogeneity in the physical properties of the cemented backfill. This heterogeneity should affect the hydraulic conductivity of the backfill in the stope. In order to study this aspect, finite element simulations were performed. This paper presents the results of these simulations, where the impact of this stratification on hydraulic conductivity is related to the performance of the backfill drainage system for various geometry. This preliminary study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the role of the drains in the dewatering process of the backfilled stope in the case of this mine.

Western Deep Levels, a seismically active deep level gold mine, started placing backfill in their narrow tabular workings as part of the regional support strategy in 1986. Over the years the percentage of working places being backfilled has been gradually increasing. At the end of 1995 the support efficiency and the labour productiveness relating to support installation were scrutinised to determine if resources were being optimised. Owing to financial, safety and productivity constraints it was decided to redesign stope support to be less labour intensive, safer and provide an integrated stope support system. This new integrated system will thus combine the previously used temporary, permanent and back area support consisting of mechanical props, hydraulic props and backfill respectively. Backfill previously formed an integral part of the regional support in conjunction with strike stabilising pillars. To design the integrated support system the backfill placement quality has to be exceptionally good and placement must be done as close as possible to the working face. The backfill to face distance was reduced by 30 per cent and in some areas by more than 50 per cent with an increase of square metres filled to increase the effect of the backfill even more. This paper addresses the design and successful implementation of an integrated stope support system based on the optimisation of backfill to the extent where installation of mechanical and hydraulic jacks could be eliminated.

The extractive phase of broad-scale mining can have major impacts on landscapes and associated ecosystems. Post-mining ecological rehabilitation typically starts with reconstructing topography. A fairly common industry practice has been to use landform elements such as plateaus, terraces, and gentle slopes for stabilisation purposes. However, this approach can lead to the generation of fairly uniform landforms that do not necessarily reflect natural ecosystems. Previous research in undisturbed and agricultural landscapes shows that ecological attributes and diversity in microclimates is positively correlated with landform heterogeneity. An objective of this study was to investigate if those findings are still valid in post-mining rehabilitating landscapes on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. We investigated the relationship between landform heterogeneity and status of ecological recovery. The landform heterogeneity is measured through variance in three landform characteristics (relief, slope, aspect) using remote-sensing data and the status of ecological recovery is represented by ecological indicators measured through field surveys. The results indicate strong correlations between landform heterogeneity indices and native vegetation species richness with sensitivity to the spatial scale of investigation. It is recognised that climate, substrate and rehabilitation practices act as primary drivers of rehabilitation success. However, the results indicate that, in some examples, landform heterogeneity (heterogeneity in relief and slope angles) contributes up to 30 to 50?per?cent of the variance in native vegetation species richness. While the primary drivers of ecological recovery are difficult to control over extensive areas and extended time periods, landform heterogeneity provides a tool to indirectly control the micro-environmental parameters to improve ecological recovery. Reducing the uncertainties in the choice of ecological and landform indices and the degree of landform heterogeneity suitable for particular rehabilitating landscapes would be site specific. The introduction of desired landform heterogeneity may provide a very effective tool for significant improvement in ecological rehabilitation across broad-scale post-mine landscapes, an outcome of benefit to industry, government and local communities.CITATION:Datar, A and Mulligan,?D,?2014. The induration furnace for iron ore pellets was originally designed to process concentrates with high contents of magnetite. To support the use of haematite concentrates, internal fuel was added to the pellets in the form of ground coke breeze or anthracite. To ensure that the addition of coke breeze was not excessive, the ‘heat of magnetite equivalent’ or heat of magnetite equivalent (HME) relationship was developed, guaranteeing that the fi ring temperature requirements remained the same. However, this oversimplifi es the different reaction paths of magnetite and carbon in iron ore pellets. At fi ring temperatures, gas diffusion controlled reactions such as the combustion of coke, the calcination of carbonates and the reduction and oxidation of iron oxides can all occur in different parts of the pellet simultaneously. The interaction of these reactions produces a range of atmospheres across the diameter of the pellet that vary from oxidising at the pellet shell to reducing at the pellet core. Mathematical modelling and pellet fi ring experiments to preheat temperatures before quenching have shown that a higher proportion of coke relative to magnetite slows down the oxidation process, irrespective of temperature. A higher temperature, however, results in an increase in the rate of haematite reduction in the pellet core and a more reducing atmosphere, which could lead to different sintering rates in different parts of the pellet and shrinkage cracks forming. To observe these gas-solid reaction rates at a larger scale, the COREM pot grate has been updated with an additional oxygen analyser. This, along with other improvements, will allow better optimisation of straight-grate firing cycles for different pellet compositions.

The difficulty in fine particle flotation has been attributed, among other things, to a low bubble-particle collision efficiency. Many technologies have been developed which aim at increasing bubble-particle collision efficiency, either by generating micro bubbles or by enlarging particle sizes. However, commercial applications of these technologies are limited. Over the last five years COREM has been actively testing fine particle froth flotation technologies with the objective of commercialisation. Several fine particle flotation technologies, such as dissolved air flotation, electro-flotation, floc flotation, selective flocculation-flotation and carrier flotation, were tested on both single minerals and ore samples in order to identify the reasons that prevented these technologies from being used on a commercial scale. It was found that the two most noticeable factors that prevented the successful application of these technologies were: Mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals. This was a general problem in fine particle flotation, but was aggravated by these technologies that either generated micro bubbles or enlarged the sizes of hydrophobic particles. Oxidation of (sulfide) minerals that resulted in hydrophilic oxidation product coatings. The oxidised fine particles could not be recovered by these fine particle flotation technologies effectively. Solutions to the two problems, ie gangue entrainment and fine particle oxidation, were proposed and tested. It seems that polymeric depressants with both depression and flocculation functions could significantly reduce gangue entrainment, and hydrophilic surfaces of oxidised fine particles could be modified by high intensity conditioning or controlled sulfidisation, thus increasing the recoveries of fine valuable minerals. The improved fine valuable particle flotation and reduced fine gangue entrainment along with fine particle flotation technologies resulted in much improved flotation separation of fine particles.

The initially cautious approach taken towards ground support and reinforcement at the Porgera Underground Gold Mine in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea has evolved rapidly in the two years since stoping commenced. The confidence to continue the evolution process has grown from an increasing knowledge of mining conditions as stoping has progressed, to the extent that reinforcement requirements have decreased by 50 to 75 per cent depending on local circumstances. Changes to mining practices have significantly assisted and influenced this process.Empirical observations of ground behaviour, assisted by a deliberately selective extensometer monitoring program, provided the stimulus for early changes to ground support and reinforcement practices. Further optimisation of the ground support and reinforcement effort is being pursued through an active monitoring, measuring and analysis program. Ultimately, situation rather than site specific design will ensure continuing high quality ground support and reinforcement installations. However, local structural and lithological factors will continue to become more critical as the optimum position is reached.

The Beverley uranium mine û now in production in the remote north of South Australia at1000 tonnes per annum û was established to meet a projected, but little-recognised shortfallin primary supply of uranium for the nuclear industry in the early part of the 21 st century. Inthe context of AustraliaÆs lack of bi-partisan support for uranium mining and the nuclearindustry, a four to five year window of opportunity existed from 1996 to establish the mine.During this period, Beverley achieved a number of firsts including: the first ISL mine inAustralia; the largest ISL mine in the world and the first to produce more than 500 tonnes ofuranium in its first year; the first to be established under a new Native Title regime in SouthAustralia; and the first to be established under a revised South Australian Mining Act.Beverley was brought into production against the background of: hostile opposition fromanti-nuclear activists; a suspicious and at-times hostile media; a regulatory and politicalcommunity that was unfamiliar with ISL mining; commercially unsophisticated Aboriginalgroups; an inexperienced engineering industry; and the vagaries of development in a remote,semi-arid location with neither population nor infrastructure. The lessons that can be learnedfrom Beverley showed that û like much in life û flexibility and timing are crucial.

The deposit is located within Upper Cretaceous Papuan Platform sediments approximately 25 km south of the Lagaip Fault, and is spatially and temporally associated with the 6 Ma alkaline Porgera Intrusive Complex.

The role of flotation columns in comparison with conventional mechanical flotation cells is discussed under the scenario of Brazilian flotation technology. All iron ore concentrator circuits commissioned since 1990 incorporated column only flotation technology in rougher, cleaner, scavenger configuration. Columns were also added to existing circuits, especially at the cleaner stage. Columns were also incorporated to phosphate ore flotation circuits operating mechanical cells. In two phosphate concentrators, columns substituted for all mechanical cells. Columns perform the cleaning stage in a large sulfide copper concentrator, following rougher flotation in tank cells. Scavenger of the cleaner tailings is performed in tank cells at this plant. Other ores that are concentrated in flotation columns include graphite, talc, lead-zinc sulfide, and a zinc hydrometallurgical residue for silver recovery.

Planning of modern mines entails considerable challenges in the areas of ground control, materials handling, safety, environment, equipment and personnel. Many orebodies are not economical unless efficient mining systems are used to win the ore. Relentless pressures are placed on mine operators to force them to become more productive and to make mines more competitive in modern economies. This has generated an intense drive to adopt technologies that rely on a greater degree of mechanisation, automation and computerisation. There is no turning back; high technology in mines is here to stay: computer controls and monitoring, computer aided mine design, information management systems, etc. During the past 20 years significant advances have been made in the areas of mine design, mine equipment and geomechanics. One could rhetorically ask if the advances in mine backfill technologies have kept pace with developments in other sectors of the mining industry. This paper will look at a few key mining technology sectors and will compare the relative progress of backfill technology to these sectors.

This research is to grope for a method to reduce high pore pressure taking place on tunnel shotcrete lining, especially in underwater tunnels, effectively by utilising a new concept of patternised pin drain. Accordingly, the patternised pin drain system is investigated numerically in order to confirm to the effect of reduction of pore pressure by the pin drain and its effective application. Installation of pin drain shows considerable reduction in the figure of pore pressure. It is found through 2D numerical modelling that the change of pore pressure, according to the shape and the location of pin drain, is sensitive by the sequences of the change of location > the change of length > the change of angle degree. In the results of investigation in 3D modelling, the pore pressure is the largest in the centre of the interval among pin drains, and it is possible to obtain an ideal degree of longitudinal angle and an interval by investigating pore pressure taking place on the lining.

Identification of geology and mineralogy in situ on the mine face is essential if mining processes are to be automated for tasks such as exploration, grading and reconciliation. Hyperspectral data acquired from field based platforms are ideally suited to these tasks, and are set to revolutionise the automated mining industry. Changing conditions of solar illumination introduces variation into the hyperspectral signal, which is unrelated to geology, complicating analysis of data. Thus, algorithms must be able to deal with changing illumination conditions and operate in a consistent and probabilistic framework, which is a prerequisite for data fusion with other sensors. To produce accurate classification maps of geology, algorithms must be developed that are effective under different conditions of illumination.The efficacy of three algorithms to classify hyperspectral data for geology mapping on vertical mine faces was assessed. These algorithms are the spectral angle mapper (SAM), and two machine learning methods operating within a fully probabilistic Gaussian process (GP) framework û the squared exponential (SE) and the observation angle dependent (OAD) covariance functions (kernel). Two experiments were done to assess the classification performances. The first determined the performance of the algorithms by classifying hyperspectral data of known rock samples acquired using a field spectrometer. The GP-based methods had a similar performance, with average accuracies and F-scores of 97 and 88 per cent (GP-OAD) and 95 and 81 per cent (GP-SE), respectively. Average accuracies and F-scores for SAM were significantly smaller (80 and 40 per cent respectively). The algorithms were then applied to hyperspectral imagery acquired from a vertical mine face at different times of the day, under very different conditions of illumination. In contrast with experiment 1, SAM and GP-OAD gave results which were superior to GP-SE and were entirely consistent with geology mapped in the field. Compared with SAM, GP-OAD was less sensitive to the effects of shadow and produced classified images that were less noisy. The GP-SE method failed to delineate even gross changes in geology on the mine face. These results show conclusively that in order to use independent training data (spectral library) to classify imagery acquired under a different set of conditions, algorithms must take into account variability in incident illumination. Measures based on spectral distance are inferior to those based on spectral angle.The OAD kernel within the GP framework (GP-OAD) is superior to the other two methods because:it provides a probabilistic framework;it is insensitive to variability in illumination within and between imagery acquired under different conditions; andit can identify and map geological zones on a vertical mine face using an independent spectral library, without a priori knowledge.

A research project incorporating a number of mine site exercises to reduce the effects of fire incidents and possible consequent health and safety hazards has been undertaken focused on the application of mine fire simulation software packages for contaminate tracing and fire modelling in coal and metalliferous mines. This paper examines aspects of introduction of inert gases to underground workings to aid recovery of a mine following a fire. Broad conclusions from work undertaken at individual Australian coal mines are discussed as examples. The effort is built around the introduction of the fire simulation computer program æVentgraphÆ to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Case studies have been developed to examine usage of inertisation units and particularly application of the GAG jet engine unit. One example has focused on selection of the best surface portal location for placement of the GAG for most efficient suppression of a fire. A second has examined a situation with significant seam gas being emitted on the face. This has shown that under certain face dip angles stopping the mine surface fan to reduce dilution of GAG exhaust gases will cause reversal of face air and consequent mine explosion as gas laden air is drawn across a fire. A third examines inertisation and dilution issues in mains headings. mains headings present a complex ventilation network with often numerous parallel headings, hundreds of cut-throughs and a variety of ventilation control devices. In such a complex system (with additional interference from a fire), maintaining control of the movement of inert gas is more difficult than elsewhere in the mine. Some illustrations of this issue are given.

Big Bell Mine is a 1.7 Mtpa longitudinal sublevel caving operation at a head grade of 3.14 g/t. Annual production is 170 000 ounces of gold. The selection and implementation of bulk emulsion explosives was seen as the logical progression from blow loaded ANFO for the high tonnage rate required from the longitudinal sublevel cave. Prior to the implementation of bulk emulsions an investigation was required to examine the technical and financial benefits available with the introduction of bulk emulsion. This paper examines the review process and the successful implementation of bulk emulsion explosives at Big Bell.

Within the framework in which future exploitations for Codelco-Chile Divisi=n El Teniente are situated, regarding the deepening of its reserves and the geotechnical problems that affect their recovery, it becomes strategic to evolve with new variants, which make deep mining possible. Codelco ChileÆs Divisi=n El Teniente is progressing within its long-term planning the exploitation of a sector called Esmeralda, which includes its removal through the gravitational caving method (panel caving). It is planned to use pre-caving, which basically consists of developing and undermining the undercut level, without having developed the infrastructure of the production and transport levels. This is carried out in order to achieve a better redistribution of the stresses, thus obtaining higher quality in the infrastructure development of these levels as well as less risk. The extraction reserves for this area, estimated through the opportunity cost selection criteria, were determined at 348 million tons with an average grade of 1.014 per cent Cu. The project carried out geological and geotechnical studies in order to prevent the geomechanical risks of the sector to be exploited, which is a site conformed totally by primary ore. Lithologically, it occurs mainly in Andesite, located at the western limit by Brecha Braden Pipe. There are also varieties of porphyries and hydrothermal breaches of anhydrite. The Esmeralda Mine production program will increase from 4000 tpd (average) in 1998 to its 45 000 tpd rate of production estimated for the year 2005. The approved investment for the period 1995 to 1999 is $US 150 million, out of a total $US 213 million for the project. At feasibility study level and before the project, it showed a Net Present Value of $US 342 million, an Internal Rate of Return of 37 per cent and an IVAN indicator of 2.3 for a ten per cent discount rate and a copper price of 100 US cents/lb.
