For low density materials such as coal, density-based fractionation of particles via the sink-float method is relatively simple due to the availability of liquids of suitable density; however, for high density minerals, suitable heavy liquids are less available and those that are available are expensive and pose significant hazards. At best, sink-float separation can be performed up to densities of 4400 kg/m3 with the use of Clerici’s solution at elevated temperatures. Hence the direct measurement of grade-recovery and density-partition curves is problematic. Therefore, in most cases, beneficiation plants must rely on methods such as QEMSCAN, density tracer particles or very limited information to guide them in the design and optimisation of their plants.This paper describes a density-fractionation method utilising laminar flow through a system of parallel inclined channels to generate a series of overflow fractions at different flow velocities. Here the particles are subject to precise hydrodynamic forces with minimal dispersion or mixing. The size distribution of each overflow fraction at a given flow velocity is obtained using a laser particle size analyser, and combined with a laminar flow model to deduce the corresponding density distribution. The paper describes the application of the method to measure the separation achieved using a REFLUX Classifier to obtain the corresponding feed, product and reject ‘washability curves’, and in turn the full partition surface. A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The recent and active magmatic arcs of eastern Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands are well endowed with sulfide mineralisation and include deposits such as Ladolam, Panguna and Solwara 1. The majority of the mineral systems in this belt are younger than four million years old, with some deposits remaining active to the present day as exemplified by active hydrothermal systems on the island of Lihir. The geodynamic setting that led to the formation of these deposits is still unresolved, with, for example, both the Pacific and Solomon Sea plates considered responsible for the formation of the Ladolam deposit on the island of Lihir under different models. In order to understand and characterise the formation of south-west Pacific mineral deposits, we must first reconstruct the complex geodynamic evolution of the region. New kinematic reconstructions show that while mineral systems in eastern PNG and the Solomon Islands are hosted within a single arc related to subduction at the New Britain and San Cristobal trenches, variable and discrete geodynamic settings exist within both the upper and lower plates throughout this region, which give rise to distinct mineralised corridors. Most notably, this region is host to: the Solwara 1 deposit, which occurs within a major transtensional corridor in the eastern Bismarck Sea the Ladolam deposit (Lihir), which is interpreted to have formed above but in relation to tearing of the subducting slab the Panguna deposit, which is related to structure in the subducting slab marginal to the actively spreading Woodlark Basin.An evaluation of the nature and variability of these diverse geodynamic settings through time can provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between the active south-west Pacific magmatic arcs and mineral deposit formation. The following note on the mineral association in the ores of the Tennant Creek Goldfield, Northern Territory, is largely based on Mineragraphic Reports Nos. 49, 89, 117 and 193 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. These reports are the results of the examinations of auriferous specimens from a number of mines of the goldfield and are now supplemented by the examination of further specimens from Mt. Samuel forwarded by Mr. V. G. Martin.The Tennant Creek Goldfield lies in the central portion of the Northern Territory, about Lat. 190 35', Long. 1340 15', on the Overland Telegraph Line and about 369 miles north of Alice Springs. It comprise an area extending about 50 miles east and west, by 30 miles north and south.The geology of the goldfield has been described by Woolnough. (2)The rocks of the area are of pre-Cambrian age, and consist of talcose, chloritic, micaceous and siliceous schists of sedimentary origin, interbedded with flows or dykes of schistose quartz porphyry, and of granites which were intruded subsequent to the regional metarporphism of the area. The rocks are moderately folded, but the beclding tends to be obscured by a pronounced east-west cleavage. The most continuous orebodies run east and west, parallel with this cleavage.Numerous lenses of hematite occur in the schists, with their long axes, parallel to the cleavage, and the gold values of the field are frequently associated with such hematite bodies. The dimensions of these hematite bodies are variable but rarely exceed a length of 300 ft., with an average thickness between 10 and 30 ft.; the original vertical dimensions are thought to be comparable with their length. The lenses tend to occur in groups when they are arranged en echelon both horizontally and in depth; and erosion has exposed individual lenses to different degrees, ranging from incipient exposure to complete removal. The existence of unexposed hematite lenses at depth has been proved by geophysical surveys, coupled with drilling tests. (3)A few of the bodies are pipe-like. Many are surrounded by a casing of brecciated rock, composed of fragments of hematite and shattered country rock, and presumably caused by subsequent earth movements which crushed the country rock against the resistant hematite bodies. In the early days of the field most of the important gold occurences were found within these crushed zones, or, to a less extent, within the hematite bodies themselves.These occurrences appeared to be associated only with those hematite lenses which were intersected by quartz veins or other lines of weakness, of later origin than the crushing. The concept of using travelling magnetic fields created by linear motors was stimulated by Laithwaite who advanced ideas on motors with shaded poles (Laithwaite, 1968), rack and pinion motors (Laithwaite, 1970) as well as low speed, brushless motors and three dimensional motors (Laithwaite, 1973a and 1973b).Sudan (1963) and Sundberg (1969) had applied the concept to metallurgical processes. However, the use of travelling magnetic fields has not been used widely to produce conditions for the separation of magnetic from non-magnetic minera1s or even magnetic materials from non-magnetic materials, although some attempts were made by McCarthy (1922), Davis (1934), Dean, Gottschalk and Davis (1934) and Gottschalk (1934).Laithwaite (1973, a) while working with linear motors made suggestions for designing separators and in the work described here, the observations of Laithwaite and others are extended to determine the characteristics of the motor with a view to using it as a magnetic separator.

For tax purposes a mining company is a New Zealand company whose principal source of income is from the business of mining, or exploring for certain specified minerals in New Zealand. New Zealand tax law distinguishes between a non-resident mining operator and a mining company, with the only major difference in tax treatment being the corporate tax rates. New Zealand mining companies are taxed at 28 per cent, whereas non-resident mining operators are taxed at 33 per cent of taxable income. These provisions also apply to the petroleum mining industry. Individuals who carry on the business of mining are also specifically defined in the Act. They are termed as 'resident mining operators'. Non-resident mining operators are non-residents of New Zealand who carry on mining ventures as a business in New Zealand. Mining ventures are defined as the exploring, searching and mining of specified minerals, including development work carried out for profits. Similar provisions apply to the petroleum mining sector. Specified minerals are defined in the Income Tax Act 1976 ('the Act') and while no useful purpose is obtained by listing them in the paper, they include a larger number of industrial and commercial minerals. The Minister of Finance is also empowered to add to the list by publishing his determination in the Gazette.

Results of laboratory studies on the flotation of marmatite (zinc sulphide) with new reagents, which were developed to avoid the use of copper sulphate, are presented.Episulphides were chosen as the basis for the reagents because of their reported special chemical affinity for zinc and cadmium. Attempts were made to solubilize and introduce functional groups to episulphides with organic and inorganic acids, ammonia, phenol, aniline, diethylamine, and pyridine. As a class of reagents, the episulphide-amine combination was generally found effective in zinc sulphide flotation to a greater or lesser degree. Best results were obtained with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination. Although anilino-ethyl mercaptan is the reported reaction product of aniline and ethylene sulphide, it was concluded that the effective zinc sulphide flotation with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination is not entirely due to the formation of the mercaptan.The economics of the possible usage of ethylene sulphide-aniline reagent are discussed.

Conventional processing of heavy mineral deposits containing radioactive rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime may cause industrial hygiene problems through atmospheric dust and contamination of product concentrates. An alternative procedure has been developed in which such minerals are removed from bulk heavy mineral concentrates by flotation with little loss of other economic minerals. With fine ores, recoveries of over 95 per cent have been achieved and with coarse ores over 80 per cent, in both cases at high grade. Several flotation regimes have proven effective. The potential for generation of radioactive dust or product contamination is subsequent processing is correspondingly reduced.

In the plumbing of vertical shafts the methods employed and equipment used, are generally made to best suit existing conditions. Undoubtedly, there is no method that can be called standard or that can be used with equal ease and success on all shafts. At the Mount Isa Mines Limited property in Northern Queensland, Australia, local conditions have presented no major difficulties to be overcome in shaft plumbing work. In fact, compared to those at many shafts, the problem has been rather simple. There are three vertical shafts connecting main mine workings, with the greatest plumbing depth for any single lift, 350 ft.Other conditions pertaining to plumbing work have been generally normal.The method we have employed is, in principle, similar to the Weisbach orientation method with a variation that does not necessitate damping of the wires to bring them to rest. Although conditions encountered have not been such that damping the wires would have been inconvenient, we feel we have saved much time and eliminated unnecessary...

This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer's perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Otago Schist belt of southern New Zealand hosts widespread orogenic gold deposits. Erosion of these orogenic gold deposits has led to the formation of numerous placer deposits distributed across and beyond the host schist belt. Numerical modelling of crustal scale deformation and geomorphic evolution has defined the key tectonic features that have controlled the severance of detrital gold deposits from their sources. Tectonic activity over the past 20 million years, during development of the modern Pacific-Australian plate boundary, has severed links between some placers and their sources. Detrital gold was transported south from the Otago Schist source region in two different river systems in the Miocene. Mesozoic orogenic gold deposits shed gold into rivers that flowed to the south. These rivers were terminated by the rise of north-west-trending basement ridges at the boundary between weak schist crust and strong greywacke crust, and the ridges were controlled by pre-existing faults at that rheological boundary. In contrast, rising mountains close to the developing plate boundary in the Miocene were the locus of new orogenic gold deposits hosted in extensional faults. These gold deposits were rapidly exhumed and contributed detrital gold to orogen-parallel Miocene rivers that flowed to the south-west. Pleistocene deformation on mainly north-west and north-east orientations, and associated river capture, has severed the links between these Miocene orogenic deposits and downstream detrital gold.CITATION:Craw, D and Upton, P, 2015. The formation of Kiruna-type deposits has been ascribed to either immiscible iron phosphate melt separated from silicic magma or precipitation from magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. The early Cretaceous Ningwu volcanic basin in Eastern China contains tens of Kiruna-type iron deposits. The orebodies are mainly hosted within the top zones of subvolcanic dioritic intrusions and along the contacts between these intrusions and adjacent volcanic rocks/strata.The orebodies are commonly associated with widespread brecciation and wall rock replacement. Magnetite formation was closely associated with extensive hydrothermal alteration that may extend kilometres, with both vertical and horizontal zonation. Field and textural data indicate that magnetite formed slightly later than albitisation but coeval with apatite and actinolite. Elemental analysis of magnetite and apatite from ores shows distinct features to those as igneous accessary minerals in the host dioritic intrusions, suggesting a genetic relationship to magmatic-hydrothermal processes. Magnetites have elevated TiO2 (up to 5 wt per cent) and V2O3 (up to 0.7 wt per cent), which implies that they are derived from incipient high-temperature magmatic fluids. It is concluded that the Kiruna-type deposits in the Ningwu basin most likely formed from high-temperature magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. The emplacement of dioritic intrusions into a subvolcanic setting likely plays a critical role in the development of Kiruna-type deposits.CITATION:Zhao, X-F, Zeng, L-P and Li, J-W, 2015. The recent paper by Bain (1981) contains an unfortunate, and potentially misleading typographic error. On page 9, second paragraph, Bain states that, "some samples of drill core from the (Candlow) Formation ... contain up to 90 ppm gold and 2 000 ppm arsenic". The gold value should read 90 ppb. In fact, in the original version of the paper (Bain, 1980), the gold value quoted was actually 60 ppb.Bain also refers briefly to some geochemical data which is attributed to me, and which I feel require some clarification.In addition, the paper contains some factual errors relating to the occurrence of carbonate and potential host rocks to Carlin-type gold deposits in the Candlow Formation.

Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. At the high rate of sample determination of the improved methods this procedure places severe strain on the eyes. The point of the anode effect on carbon anodes of dcfincd surface area. during electrolytic decomposition of alumina dissolved in molten fluorides. has been determined from current-voltage curves. The reproducibility and accuracy was found to be better for cell voltage than anode current density. Results have been obtained for the effect of alumina concentration temperature and carbon type. The point of the anode effect was strongly dependent on both the alumina concentration and the carbon type. For high alumina concentrations it has been found that the anode effect approaches reversibility. From these results it is concluded that co-evolution of CO, and CF. occurs prior to the onset of the anode effect. The anode effect results when the CF, content becomes sufficiently high for the melt not to wet the electrode surface and is maintained because of the slow desorption of CF, and the high electrode potential that results.

THERE are certain facts that the mining industry in Australia is faced with at the present moment which may be accepted as axioms. The industry is at a low ebb, as evidenced by statistics. Metals form the basis of all modern industries, and are necessaryfor the welfare of Australia. Mining is a wasting asset. Every ton of ore extracted is one ton less which c.annot be made good, and it should be our duty to get as much profit froin that ore as possible, otherwise there is a permanent loss to the country.The metal market cannot be controlled by Australia; it is more or less an international matter. Australia has not been thoroughly prospected. There are no mines being developed that are likely to replace those which are being depleted.Our mining engineers are as capable as those in other parts of the world, and have made good where they have been given a chance. There is no one cause for the present depression; there are several, more or less, interwoven. Of course, the war has had an adverse effect, but that has only dislocated things temporarily; it upset our markets, influenced the price of metals, and affected the labour market and cost of stores. Labour troubles made their appearance before the wave of unrest swept over the world. The cause of labour discontent must be investigated, and if possible removed. As each industry has .its·own problems, miners must inquire into their special problems, as there is no sovereign remedy that will suit all cases.It is obvious that we cannot mine ore if we do not know where it is; therefore, the first thing is to discover workable deposits.

Tertiary volcanic rocks make up a significant proportion of the surficial cover rocks of New Zealand, especially in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Industrial minerals that are associated with or derived from the volcanic rocks include: amorphous silica, allophane, bentonite, diatomite, ignimbrite building stone, illite clays, halloysite clay, obsidian, perlite, pumice, sulphur, titanomagnetite ironsand and zeolite. Of these: bentonite, ignimbrite building stone, perlite, pumice and titanomagnetite ironsand have been mined and processed for 20 to 30 years, but many of the others require further characterisation of the resource and/or development of markets.   We have compiled interim mineral deposit models for halloysite clays in rhyolite and for zeolites in altered vitric tuffs. These models include geological and mineralogical attributes, which are linked to the underlying volcanic and geothermal processes that have produced the minerals and their source volcanic rocks. Halloysite clay deposits at Matauri Bay (Northland) have formed from hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite. Clinoptilolite + mordenite zeolite deposits in the Ngakuru area (Rotorua district) have formed from hydrothermal alteration of volcanic glass in lacustrine sediments and ignimbrite. Further refinement and application of these models will result in a better understanding of the mineralogy, localisation and origin of the deposits, with consequent applications in exploration and resource assessments.
