The influence of pulp density, ferric ion concentration and particle size on the tank bioleaching of two kinds of refractory gold concentrates are discussed. The chemistry and mechanism of the bioleaching process are also presented. The relationship between oxidation of sulphides, liberation of enclosed gold and gold cyanidation are discussed. The consumption of NaCN could be reduced by alkaline treatment of bioleached residues prior to Cyanidation.

There has been little change in the lead smelting practice at Mount Isa since 1939 when the metallurgy and general practice were outline by Raney and Blott.The purpose of this paper is to descriqe some of the operational details that have influenced the overall production. The slag fall hns been increased by the lowering of the lead content of the concentrate. Further, as it is the practice to include iron on the furnace charge and carry a higher lime content in the slag, both factors have produced notable results in furnace operations.All blast furnace gases are filtered in a baghouse and this unit is. being further extended to take all smelter gases, thus eliminating the existing Cottrell plant handling Dwight-Lloyd gases.The lead smelter was closed down from April 1943, to May 1946, during which time blister copper was produced.The report is subdivided as follows:-1. Osborne Mine commenced hydraulic filling of three stopes in April 1999. Two of these stopes experienced barricade failures in July 1999 and January 2000. As a result, a review of hydraulic filling was commissioned in April 2000. The design of a trial of revised specifications and practices is in the final stages, prior to the trial commencing in mid-2002.

Many projects fail because project performance in unfavourable economic conditions was not anticipated at the investment decision stage. This type of failure may have been avoided through the selection of a strategy that enables the project to perform well under a range of possible future economic conditions (a ærobustÆ strategy); rather than an æoptimalÆ strategy for expected future conditions that will never eventuate. This paper describes a method of rapidly generating mine plans for a number of project strategies, and then evaluating it against a representative range of equally likely economic conditions. The key performance indicators derived for each strategy are the mean value and the distribution of values (variance). A prudent investor will identify prospective strategies not only on the merit of highest mean values (as a proxy for economic reward), but also on the probability of not meeting specified investment hurdles (a proxy for risk). A robust strategy will achieve its financial objective even under adverse economic variations. This paper focuses on the effect of commodity price uncertainty; particularly around the choice of mining and processing capacity levels. Results from enumerating 2000 prices scenarios against 63 strategy combinations show how processing and mining capacity can be manipulated to manage the risk-reward trade-off.

"Wet-weather or 24×7 wet-trafficability is a commendable design objective for unpaved mine haul roads, but practically often difficult to achieve, due both to the road sheeting material selected, and also its breakdown under the action of traffic and environment. Accidents allied to wet-trafficability issues, either due to rain or often more commonly, over-watering of mine roads, is increasing and especially the loss of control or uncontrolled vehicle movements categorisation. The dominant system failure is that once vehicle control is lost, control cannot be regained.The friction supply, or ‘skid resistance’ of a mine haul road sheeting is critical to the safe operation of the road and data has to be collated concerning the variation of friction supply with sheeting material engineering or indicator properties. In the light of the paucity of data existing in this field, this paper presents the contributory research that informs the development of improved and validated unpaved mine road friction supply estimates, based on a number of mine site evaluations across a range of sheeting material types and characteristic parameters, leading to improved predictive models of friction supply.Results from this preliminary review will enable operators to assess their road sheeting materials, improve and validate unpaved mine road friction supply estimates. This will contribute to improved road design, management and 24×7 operability decisions and contribute to a reduction in heavy vehicle loss of control incidents on gravel-surfaced mine haulage roads.Citation:Thompson, R and Tulloch, D, 2016. The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. An important feature of the sinter structure was the formation of a perovskite phase (CaTiO3 ) and an increase in the proportion of this phase in the structure as TiO2 levels increase.CITATION:Dehghan-Manshadi, A, Manuel, J, Hapugoda, S, Ware, N and Donskoi, E, 2015. The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulfide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.

The Fitzpatrick area is the deepest section of the North Mine, with the orebody located between 1450 and 1800 m below the surface and some 600 m NE of the main No. 3 Shaft orebody and separated from it by the intensely sheared Globe Vauxhall Shear Zone. Development towards the Fitzpatrick area commenced in 1977 after earlier initial exploration drive development. However, it was not until 1982 that mining in the Fitzpatrick area actually began with the silling out of No. 36 level at a depth of some 1600 in. Since that time mechanised cut and fill mining from an incline ramp system with connecting stope accesses has progressed some 25 m above No. 36 level. Initial sill development on No. 37 level at 1660 m depth also commenced in July 1987 to further develop the Fitzpatrick area.

It is generally acknowledged that bulk ore sorting is an attractive prospect for the mining industry. However, uncertainties relating to the operational performance of sensor technologies, the grade heterogeneity present in analysed material and the physical separation performance of the coupled system complicate the evaluation and deployment of bulk ore sorting strategies at operations. To assist in the quantification of these uncertainties, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and Anglo American have implemented a systematic methodology to evaluate the deployment of sensor technologies for bulk ore sorting. This methodology was implemented at a bulk ore sorting demonstration plant using penetrative prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) and surface x-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements of base metals, as a proxy for precious metals, at Mogalakwena PGE Mine. The methodology comprises of three phases. The initial phase involves the preliminary investigation of sensor technologies and analysis to reduce identified risks prior to commissioning of the bulk ore sorting plant. The second phase executes a series of experiments to prove the sensing technologies in the operational environment and provide confidence the sensors can drive separation. The final phase demonstrates the production scale bulk ore sorting performance of the plant and validates its performance by campaign of the sorted products at the processing plant. Throughout the operational deployment and evaluation of bulk ore sorting at Mogalakwena, several key lessons were learned. These learnings relate to the calibration requirements of the sensor technologies, the application of surface vs penetrative sensor techniques and the preservation of grade heterogeneity delivered to the sensors. This paper presents the methodology used, and lessons learned, in the operational deployment and evaluation of PGNAA and XRF sensors for bulk ore sorting at Mogalakwena PGE Mine.

King Island is situated at the western approach of Bass Strait and approximately mid way between Victoria and Tasmania. The scheelite orebodies lie within the south east of the island. Ore bearing horizons from 10 m to 40 m thick occur in south and east dipping stratiform deposits. The orebodies occur in skarn formed by contact metasomatic replacement of carbonate rocks by granite intrusives. The scheelite is deposited as fine disseminated grains in and along the margins of andradite garnets in the skarn. King Island Scheelite operates two under- ground mines from which 350 000 tonnes per year are obtained. The Dolphin mine produces almost two-thirds of the total. See Figure 1. The Dolphin orebody lies beneath the sea and an area of reclamation. The orebody is inter- sected by zones of major dislocation. A chequerboard post pillar cut and fill stoping system has been chosen to provide the necessary support to the hanging wall. Because the stability of the pillars is critical to the economic welfare of the mine, considerable attention is given to the reduction of overbreak.

Mineralisation adjacent to Herberton occurs within three main subcentres. The Her- berton Hill subcentre is characterised by the association of Sn,W the Herberton Dividing Range South subcentre by Sn, and the Herberton Dividing Range North by Cu, As. The relation- ships between the subcentres are discussed in terms of metal distribution, production, deposit types, wall rock alteration and re- lationships with granitoid intrusives. The temporal and three dimensional spatial re- lationships between the centres are uncertain.

The Bowen Basin of Queensland and the Hunter Valley of New South Wales are the two largest black coal producing areas in Australia. Mining activities require the availability of large on-lease storages for water and tailings. The legislative framework for the regulation of large dams is slightly different between the states. The paper provides a broad outline of the regulatory framework in each state, with particular reference to Queensland and New South Wales. In New South Wales, water storages and tailings dams are treated similarly by the regulator. Under the Queensland Water Act 2000, now proclaimed, referable dams are restricted to water supply dams the failure of which involves population at risk downstream. Tailings dams are excluded, being deemed hazardous waste dams regulated under the Environment Protection Act 1994. These storage facilities are required to include a ædesign storage allowanceÆ so that the possibility of spillway discharges is minimised. New South Wales is moving toward this requirement. A curious anomaly is emerging in Queensland: the legislative definition of hazardous waste û material resulting from the processing of minerals û does not extend to coal tailings since coal is not included in the definition of a mineral. The paper explores this and other ramifications for mining operations of the new legislation as well as general trends in criteria affecting the cost of providing water and tailings storages.

Good morning and thank you for the opportunity to address this yearÆs New Zealand Minerals Conference.   As you have already heard from the Associate Minister of Energy, the Government believes that the minerals industry is an important part of our economy. In particular, our coal and lignite resources have the potential to play an important role in New ZealandÆs energy sector as both a primary fuel and as a means to produce electricity.   The Government has taken a keen interest in the primary fuel sector given the declining reserves of natural gas sector. The energy sector is a key driver of economic growth and it is therefore critical that we have a reliable supply of primary fuel as part of the energy mix.   In a global sense, New Zealand is like many other countries regarding the need to secure energy for the future. Natural gas will be a key bridging fuel in the transition from an energy market based on fossil fuels to one based on renewables over the next century.   However, natural gas as a solution to this energy transition has some pragmatic limitations for New Zealand. There is uncertainty as to when new domestic reserves of gas can be discovered and developed. And the alternative of imported LNG poses a number of costs and risks to the economy.   New ZealandÆs coal resources are vast-estimated to be enough to last hundreds of years at the current rate of extraction. The main question is can extraction be increased and sustained to meet the demand of domestic power producers and at the same time meet commitments to lucrative international markets?   At this point it is appropriate for me to place coal into context with Governments overarching policy objectives for energy. The Government has stated objectives for the energy sector emphasising energy efficiency and an increased focus of renewable energy, while still ensuring security of supply and certainty as to energy costs and risk. Coal certainly can make a contribution to these objectives going forward.

The Central Coal Mining Research Institute has developed the MAE acoustic emission monitoring system, the BD4-1 portable acoustic emission monitor and the MRB rock burst monitoring system. In the MAE system there is an IBM-PLAT, a receiver and 16 channels and the investigating range is 100 m. The main functions are detecting acoustic events from the working faces, periodically making statistics, prints, displays and storing of the results, and performing the off-line process such as drawing the curves of acoustic activity. The BD4-1 instrument has four channels, it works for more than 24 hours continuously, and keeps the data for more than 30 days after power tum-off. The BD4-1 is suited to the monitoring for a long or a short time as a fixed point where the system is invalid, especially to the monitoring of the acoustic activity promoted by the blasting. There is an IBM-PC/AT, a receiver and 16 channels spread 10 km in the system MRB. The system could on-line collect microseismic events throughout the whole mine, calculate the source location and the energy, and off-line draw the seismic activity draft of time-based or distribution in space. In practice, the forecasting is successful by using the acoustic emission and microseismic monitoring system and the portable instrument.

Floor failure on the longwall face is a complex problem due to the dynamic interaction between the surrounding strata and powered roof supports involving multiple variables. It can also be highly problematic and costly when not well understood as there are significantly less remedies available post event. This was the early experience at the case study mine where significant lost time was incurred due to unplanned delays in the first two panels. To detect and prevent such occurrences is clearly the best approach, hence a tool to predict both floor failure occurrence and magnitude prior to mining was developed. Several parameters were determined as the key drivers for the failure events that had been experienced at this site. These parameters were, in list of influence from highest to lowest, material strength, retreat rate and the presence of water. The parameters were evaluated using a semi quantitative risk rating system ‘Heave Risk’ and given a weighting per their apparent influence. This ‘expert system’ methodology was selected as the use of risk rating systems in underground coal mining is well established. The heave risk model was first applied to previously mined panels. It accurately identified all areas of known major floor heave, with clearly defined areas of low and high risk apparent. The heave risk model was then used prior to mining and evaluated post mining based on observed conditions. It was found to also be highly accurate for prediction. The variability of each parameter and its influence on the overall risk rating is illustrated and discussed.

The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision. The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand. In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand, these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as "minerals programmes".

Understanding the fundamental principles governing the reactions at surfaces has always been the goal of theoretical surface science. The atomistic simulation techniques have been used to calculate the surface structures and the stability of quartz and wollastonite, and their adsorption behaviour in the presence of molecular and dissociative water, and the two widely used collector head group molecules of methanoic acid and methylamine. The dissolution behaviour of wollastonite has also been modelled. The calculated surface energy, hydration energy and reaction energy values have been examined and discussed in the light of flotation literature. These studies have given an insight into the interactions at atomic level, which indicate that modelling techniques should be capable of predicting the adsorption behaviour and to design the selective collector molecules, which is of central importance to the mineral processing technique of flotation.
