SINCE 1900, five underground fires of consequence have beenrecorded in the Broken Hill mines. These occurred at the Junction(1906), Proprietary (1906 and 1916), Block 14 (1906), and Centralmines (1923). All have been extinguished, but at an enormouscost; e.g., in the eleven months following on the 1923 Central mine fire the sum of £187,123 was expended in fire-fighting operations.To this series may be added others, as the South (1925) and British mine (1918) fires, which were extinguished before serious damage had resulted. All, however, have occurred within a period of 28 years, and in a district where spontaneous combustion, a prolific source of fire in the U.S.A., has been practically nonexistent. Therefore, definite fire risks exist in the underground workings of the Broken Hill mines, and, as a consequence, an active fire prevention policy is a necessity...

The Quioma Mine is located along the axis of the Cordillera Oriental, 130 km southeast of Cochabamba, South Central Bolivia. Silver, lead, zinc, antimony, and gold have been intermittently produced from veins in the Quioma area since Colonial times. Mineralization occurs within steeply dipping fissure veins transecting moderately folded Lower Ordovician sediments. Tectonic activity is early to mid-Tertiary and the vein system parallels the fold axis of a major northwest-southeast striking, doubly plunging anticline. Vein sets occur within a 2 km wide band over a strike distance of 13 km along the northeast limb of the anticline. Economic mineralization occupies syntectonic pre-mineral fault zones developed in more competent stratigraphis units of Lower Ordovician clastic sediments. Veins average 55 cm in width, although mineralized structures up to 3 m wide with a known strike length of several hundred meters have been mined. Mineralization consists of siderite, argentifferous galena, sphalerite, and quartz, with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, barite, and bournonite. Pyrite is rare except at the Boston vein where it occurs with stibnite that contains trace amounts of gold. A marked characteristic of veins in the district is evidence of repeated stages of movement during mineralization. Intrusive rocks are rare in the Quioma area. Narrow porphyritic dikes of Andesitic composition averaging 1 m in thickness have been observed. These dikes occasionally show a close spatial relationship to the veins and are often kaolinized and carbonitized. Vein and dike contacts are sharp and alteration does not appear to extend into the wall rock. Mineral zoning is suggested by antimony mineralization observed in peripheral areas of the anticline.

The Boddington Gold Mine, operated by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd, is located about 100 km south of Perth and is one of the largest-producing gold mines in Australia.Multiple open pits are planned and several extend below the water table, through the deeply weathered lateritic profile and into the underlying Archean bedrock. Groundwater related mining problems, such as poor trafficability, wet floor conditions and slope instability began to occur early in 1990.The mine is located within Archean greenstones which are steeply dipping and faulted. Rock types include mafic to felsic volcanics, pyroclastics and sediments. These rocks have been regionally deformed and metamorphosed and are intruded by quartz micro-diorites and post-mineralisation dolerite dykes. Deep weathering has produced a typical oxide profile consisting of laterite, clay and saprolite zones underlain by weathered to fresh bedrock.

Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

The Eocene-Oligocene porphyry belt of northern Chile contains the worldÆs largest accumulation of porphyry-related copper metal. Conflicting models exist regarding the relative importance of strike-slip and reverse faulting during the emplacement of the porphyry and epithermal systems, based on regional studies and also from work at the Chuquicamata deposit. In contrast, at the Collahuasi district, high sulfidation state copper-silver mineralisation was superimposed into the core of the Rosario copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits along normal faults during gravitational collapse of the Domeyko Cordillera. Exhumation of the porphyry environment occurred rapidly during this event, allowing near-surface epithermal mineralisation (<200 m paleodepth) to be juxtaposed into the potassic altered core of the porphyry deposit (estimated depth of formation: 1300 m) in the space of approximately one million years. Mass wasting after major episodes of tectonic uplift provides an effective method of hypogene upgrading of porphyry ores by high sulfidation mineralisation.

Coal fines are recognised to have a major impact on the cost and efficiency of the recovery of saleable coal. Fines affect the productivity of the whole mining cycle because of the low yields obtained in washing this material as well as affecting the moisture content and handling characteristics of the final product.In 1990, Coal and Allied Hunter Valley Mine initiated an internal study into coal fines based on the assumption that a reduction in fine coal in ROM material will lead to increase yields in the preparation plant. The initial results of this study indicated that the level of fines in the ROM coal can be reduced by more than 40 per cent by simple changes in blast design and implementation.

The prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first was published in 1937; the second, in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. Hydraulic Monitor mining at Solid EnergyÆs Spring Creek Mine has proven to be a safe and effective method of extracting steeply dipping thick seams at production capabilities approaching one million tonnes per annum.   This paper traces the development of Hydraulic Monitor mining from its initial introduction into old workings at Strongman Mine, its refinement at Strongman 2 in shallow, thick and steep workings, through to its introduction into the deep, very thick seams at Spring Creek Mine. This last step of the progression came with all the added complications that come with depth, particularly flammable gas.   This paper will describe the various changes in mining conditions that dictated the performance of the monitor, how the mine layouts were changed to adapt, and the various operational systems that were put in place, to allow a safe and productive operation.

The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed account of the development of the Blasthole Diamond Drilling method of stoping now used at the property of Big Bell Mines Limited, in Western Australia.The ore body is one of the large low grade gold deposits of this State, being a continuous lens 1,850 ft. long and ranging in width from 15 ft. at the ends to 120 ft. at the widest part, the average width being 59 ft. It was first worked in 1913 by a local syndicate, and up to 1924, when operations ceased, 64,448 tons of 3.4 dwt. ore were mined from a shallow open cut. Between 1928 and 1932, 15 deep diamond drill holes were put down to test the ore body at vertical depths ranging from 100 to 700 ft. On the information gained from these drill holes, Premier Gold Mining Co. Ltd. began underground explQration. A level was driven at a depth of 253 ft. and crosscuts put out to the full width of the, orebody at intervals of 100 ft. along the strike, all ore broken being put through a sampling plant. On completion of this sampling,' Big Bell Mines Limited was formed as the operating company, and a plant with a capacity of 1,000 long tons per day was erected and mining and milling operations were commenced in 1937. Presently, orebody modelling consists basically of fitting a mathematical model to represent spatially a certain geological variable, generally grade. An orebody model is constructed from a set of sample data obtained from various locations in the orebody, thus it is only one form of representation of the true phenomena. Checking the compatibility of the data with the modelling procedure is the most important factor when assessing confidence in the orebody model. The level of confidence in the model will depend on the adequacy of the data set and the validity of the basic assumption required by the modelling method. Fractal geometry is one way of modelling the spatial distribution of a geological variable in an orebody geometry. Fractals can be used to interpolate the Z(x) geological variable at unsampled sites. The concepts of self similarity and self affinity that form the basic assumption of fractal geometry theory which areinvestigated. The population distribution of the geological variable in question must be examined to determine the appropriateness of both fractal geometry and geostatistical modelling methods. The selection of the most appropriate method depends on the available data. A researcher or a practitioner needs to understand the strengths and limitations of the various modelling methods before choosing the most appropriate method. This study investigates the fractal properties of grade distribution using the variogram and some proposed variations as techniques to measure the fractalness. The aim is to assess applicability of fractal geometry theory to modelling ore grade distribution in a deposit. A comparison of the results demonstrates the methods which better capture the spatial behaviour of the variable under study.

Optimum selection of explosives by means of monitoring explosive performance can lead to increased profitability through the control of fragmentation, a reduction in hangingwall and footwall damage and overall drill and blast costs. Studies conducted at the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company underground copper mine evaluated in situ the performance of four explosive types. Measurements included monitoring the levels of induced shock energy and the attenuation thereof with distance. The velocity of detonation (VOD) of these explosives was also measured using in-hole techniques. Assessment of these results, together with a knowledge of the rock mass strength, facilitated the selection of an explosive that was best suited to the given rock mass conditions.

A brief review is presented of the mechanisms and causes of spoil pile failures which have occurred at the Goonyella Mine. In particular, the results of a recent geo- technical investigation of the spoil dumps in the Cleanskin pit are briefly presented. Spoil pile hydrology is discussed in relation to the use of effective stress concepts in the analysis of spoil pile stability. Experience in relation to stabilisation of dragline dumps is discussed as well as the likelihood of current techniques being success- ful in the prevention of gross failures if prestrip material is placed in existing spoil piles. Parameters exerting a major control on dump stability are outlined.

When the original Mount Gunson joint venture,between CSR Limited and United Uranium N.L. ceased operations in December 1971, an intensive exploration campaign was launched to prospect for more ore in the Mount Gunson region. This campaign resulted in the dis- covery'of the Cattle Grid copper deposit. A comprehensive sampling pro- gramme including the sinking of over 200 diamond drill holes and two vertical shafts,proved the existence of 4.6 million tonnes of ore, at a mean grade of 2.4% Cu,calculated at 1.00% Cu cutoff.

The oxidation of sphalerite particles of 60 to 100 mesh size was studied in a fluidized bed of low 02 concentration at 900¦C. Par- tial pressure of 02 in the fluidizing 02-N2 gas mixture was chosen between 0.0009 and 0.02 atm. In the region of p02 between 0.008 and 0.02 atm, the oxidation rate was lowered with the decrease of p02, and the unreacted-core model was applied. At lower pbelow 0.008 atm, the reaction rate was enhanced as compared with the calcu- lated values from the unreacted-core model. From microscopic examination, it was found that ZnS was evaporated at the particle surface and the dissociated Zn vapor was oxidized in the gas phase. Initial reaction rate and the distance between the surface of inner sphaler- ite core and the oxide shell were studied based on the model of enhanced oxidation.

A detailed study on oil agglomeration of fine metal oxide particles is presented in this paper. The major content embraces several aspects which may possibly reflect the current trends in oil agglomeration such as the effect of chemical and physical parameters, the activation of target minerals and the deactivation of gangue particles, the mechanisim of bridging liquid and the kinetics of oil agglomeration process. Systems of ilmenite-feldspar, manganese dioxide - quartz were seperated successfully through oil agglomeration followed by decantation or flotation technique respectively. A triple mixture of vandium-bearing titanomagnetite ilmenite and feldspar was processed satisfactorily using a composite technology: oil agglomeration-decantation-magnetic concentration.

This paper gives a description of the research undertaken by an explosives manufacturer to give better technical advice to the Mineral Industry. Blasting Physics is defined as giving a systematic and coherent account of the initiation and subsequent effects of high explosives upon the surrounding medium. As a result of this work a mathematical model based on the gener- ally accepted mechanism of blasting has been developed. The mechanism and the resulting model are briefly outlined. The Dampier Port Upgrade was completed in 2007 and is the largest project in Rio Tinto Iron Ore's expansion program. The project doubled Dampier Port's iron ore shipping capacity over a five year period. Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) was appointed by Rio Tinto as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) contractor to manage Phase A and Phase B of the Dampier Port Upgrade. The aim of the project was to increase the Dampier Port capacity from 74 to 140 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). This increase in shipping capacity tripled the capacity of the Parker Point facility from 34 to 94 Mt/a, whilst the East Intercourse Island facility increased from 40 to 46 Mt/a. The Dampier port remained fully operational throughout construction and achieved record yearly export tonnages over the period of the project. The $US1.4B project was completed ahead of schedule, on budget and with an outstanding safety record. Significantly the project team set an industry benchmark by achieving five million man-hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) free. The project has been recognised by the Engineers Australia 2008 Western Australian Engineering Excellence awards as category winner in resources and the overall winner in WA, and went on to win a National Engineering Excellence award. This paper provides an overview of the EPCM project management and an insight into some of the key drivers that have delivered this outstanding project.
