Energetics has been in the business of climate change for more than twenty years. This experience has only served to cement the understanding that decisions taken during design define the environmental and economic performance of any project. The 80-20 rule definitely applies, with 80% of a project’s performance being set through the first 20% of design decisions. This in depth knowledge is used for determining energy price forecasts, future carbon markets and carbon costs, current and future energy technologies, as well as giving a thorough understanding of the processes and technologies in place in the mining industry to work out what the most carbon and energy sensitive decisions during design are. Project selection and design is a gated process where decisions are taken in line with the information available at that point in the evolution of the project. Design decisions are, by their nature, dominated by uncertainty. In order to ensure that robust decisions are taken, it is necessary to ensure that the correct information is brought to bear at the correct decision point. This then defines and supplies the necessary carbon and energy information for design decisions to be correctly made. One of the most significant risks facing design engineers and decision makers in the mining industry is the future cost of energy. Part of this risk is associated with a future cost of carbon, however, a significant part of this risk is the cost, and variability in this cost, of the energy itself. This paper investigates the information required to support good decision taking during the design process.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators accept poor quality evaluations because they are generally unaware of what they should expect.The 2010 draft AusIMM ‘Guidelines for Techno-Economic Evaluations’ were collated by a subcommittee of practitioners and are regarded as best practice.They apply directly to projects and metallurgical plant evaluations, including those with a heavy technical basis. They can be applied to technical problem solving where there are no monetary computations.Project Managers and MetPlant Operators should demand that economic models and evaluations follow the six principles. They should become working tools which are easy to understand, fit for purpose, consistent, rigorous, record sources of input data, have key graphs and are rapid to audit.

The use of mercury for amalgamation has been an integral part of the small-scale gold mining industry in developing countries owing to its low investment cost, simplicity of the technique and high gold recovery. However, its impact on health and environmental hazards have not been given the attention they deserve. In spite of the growing awareness and concerns over the mercury pollution problem by regul-atory authorities, precautionary measures such as bans on the use of mercury in some countries have been largely ineffective.This paper first reviews some of the mechanisms of mercury poll-ution, and mercury toxicity which varies according to its oxidation state. It then describes how mercury released to the atmosphere would go through the "Mercury Cycle". Compar-isons have also been made with previously measured mercury levels in small scale Papua New Guinean miners with their counterparts in other developing countries.

A narrow (200-300m) zone of amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks underlies the Papuan ophiolite near the Musa-Kumusi divide, SW of Popondetta, Oro Province. The amphibolite rocks are bounded up-section, to the NE, by peridotite and gabbro of the ophiolite; and down-section, to the SW, by mafic greenschist, which in turn overlies blueschist facies mafic schists of the Emo Metamorphics.Amphibole compositions within the narrow contact zone show a strong chemical zonation which reflects a steep thermal gradient, with maximum temperatures >800¦C at the peridotite contact. The modern workplace has changed dramatically in recent years with an increased emphasis on the psychological well-being of employees. While adhering to a certain standard of psychosocial safety at work is now not only a moral, but legal obligation in Australia, it begs the question: how can organisations begin to ensure psychosocial safety? A positive psychosocial safety climate is one where employees feel they are psychologically safe, feel supported in their work and are not exposed to work-related stressors that can negatively affect their mental health. Such a climate can help boost productivity and create a more positive working environment. This presentation will provide a twopronged approach to understanding and managing psychosocial safety: pairing a traditional risk assessment with climate measurement. Risk assessments can provide several benefits, including identifying and characterising work-related hazards, identifying the nature and severity of the risks to employees and prioritising necessary interventions for reducing or preventing psychosocial harm in the workplace. However, these assessments can have certain limitations, especially when it comes to capturing some of the less obvious causes of psychosocial harm. Climate measurement can provide valuable insights into employees’ perceptions of the work environment, identify areas of concern that may not have been identified in the risk assessment and help to guide organisational changes that will enhance employees’ psychosocial well-being over time. It will also be argued that climate should be assessed from a broad perspective exploring general, physical, social and psychological aspects of safety climate. This presentation will explore why conducting risk assessments in conjunction with detailed climate measurements is integral to protecting the psychosocial safety of employees in the workplace and demonstrate why employers should view the two approaches as complementary and interconnected. Best practice recommendations will be provided for the risk assessment, climate measurement and psychosocial interventions

Long-term exposure to respirable dust continues to present an occupational health and safety hazard to mine workers in underground mines. Workers who are exposed to mine dust can develop occupational lung diseases including coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) or ‘black lung’, progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To demonstrate the exposure impact of certain working conditions and improve dust management in longwall development panels, this paper details the development of a computational fluid dynamicsvirtual reality (CFD-VR) based training tool. The tool has been developed as an educational platform to facilitate the effective communication of workplace health and safety (WH&S) dust control measures for continuous miner operators and engineers. The study introduces a promising approach to model ventilation and dust flow patterns based on site-specific data, employing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for a detailed analysis and visualisation of these mechanisms. Additionally, an algorithm has been developed for processing the large and complex CFD data sets into a form amenable for visualisation within a virtual reality (VR) environment using standalone VR headsets with limited processing power. This training tool has been deployed to mine sites with the specific purpose of educating users on the hazards of dust emissions and the best practices for control.

The recoveries of the three cobalt minerals in the Mount Cobalt deposit, cobaltite CoAsS, erythrite CO3(AS04)8H20, and new cobalt mineral with a composition approximating 2CoO.CaO.Fe203.2As205.11H2O were investigated using physical and surface-chemical processes.Over 80 per cent cobalt recovery was achieved by tabling a cobaltite-mineralized sample, while about 76 per cent cobalt recovery was obtained by dry feed magnetic separation of a sample containing erythrite and the new cobalt mineral. The resultant primary magnetic concentrate with a cobalt grade of 5.5 per cent, was able to be upgraded to 14.4 per cent cobalt by regrinding .and a further magnetic separation.Electrophoretic mobility - pH responses for each of the three cobalt minerals were found to be similar. Each mineral remained negative over the pH range 3 to 11 and was most negative at mildly alkaline pH values.Cobaltite was floated effectively with amyl and ethyl xanthate collectors under acidic conditions at collector concentrations of 10-2M to 10-5M. Erythrite showed a similar flotation response using 10-sM amyl xanthate. The practical application of these laboratory separations to an industrial process is suggested.

A new bench blast design method and its realization with the assistance of the computer is introduced. The basic design principle is to define a rhomb cell, called fully- fractured zone, through a series of full scale bench crater tests and apply this geometric pattern in multi-hole, multi- row blast design. To illustrate the design method, the optimization process and assessment of blast performance are presented in the context of a case study.

Blastholes fired in a pattern with a constant initiation delay create a frequency in the ground vibration similar to that from a percussion instrument, such as a drum, in the air. A constant firing delay generates a prime or forcing frequency into the ground motion. The forcing frequency may then be modified by ground transmission characteristics into subharmonics of the forcing frequency. The moving vibration source between blastholes also creates a frequency shift because of a Doppler effect. Other wave interactions may form beats. The effects are exacerbated by the accurate firing times of electronic detonators. This paper demonstrates how observations of wavetraces and frequency spectral analysis were used to recognise:Doppler effect and frequency ellipsoidssubharmonics (and sub-subharmonics) of the forcing frequencybeat formation that may double or triple peak particle velocity (PPV) levels.Recognition of beats permitted techniques to be used to control ground vibration from coal overburden blasting to limits deemed to cause no further instability in a slip failure. Following discovery in October 2004, commencement of development in February 2007 and first ore production in mid 2007, the Trident gold deposit, located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, has now been successfully mined for over three years. Three years of operational history has enabled the performance of the Trident underground mine to be reconciled against the mine plan and strategy proposed for the original feasibility study.The Trident deposit, initially based on two lode systems known as the Eastern Zone and Western Zone, has been continuously drilled, interpreted and re-interpreted over the period and as a result the addition of the Athena, Apollo and Artemis lode systems as well as numerous smaller scale lodes has been realised. The first three years has seen the Trident underground mine quickly move up to its 1 Mtpa design production rate. The mine plan and strategy used in the initial feasibility study and subsequently implemented, required sufficient flexibility to enable modification and optimisation to mine plans as ore zones were further defined. The ability to modify the mining plans has enabled Avoca to achieve its mining targets at Trident. With over 250 000 ounces gold produced to January 2010, the company is well positioned to achieve its ten year vision associated with the Higginsville Gold Project.This paper offers an account of operational experiences whilst providing comparison to assumptions and methodologies used in the original feasibility study. The paper is a sequel to a paper presented at the Tenth Underground Operators’ Conference held in Launceston, Tasmania titled Development Strategy of the Trident Underground Gold Mine.

Grade Engineering® (GE) involves a range of integrated technologies and operating protocols for improving effective feed grade through early rejection of low value material prior to costly processing activities and has the potential to transform the economics of large, low grade, mining operations. Extensive GE test work by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and the Cooperative Resource Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRCORE) determined that the Gramalote gold deposit in Colombia is highly amenable to implementation of grade-by-size screening to upgrade the ore at a production scale. To understand the relationships between geology and the upgrade response drill core and bulk samples were analysed at the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES) as part of a larger CRCORE project to understand geological controls on grade-by-size deportment, i.e., the tendency for specific mineral phases to preferentially fractionate during breakage into different size fractions. This work is focussed on understanding the role of mineralogy and texture in influencing rock breakage and natural fractionation at a range of scales. Detailed logging of Gramalote drill core and mineralogical analyses including hyperspectral logging, portable and bench-scale X-ray fluorescence (XRF), plus low resolution Laser Ablation of intact drill core pieces, combined with data from site (drill logs, geochemistry, petrophysics) were used to evaluate the ore and alteration mineralogy, vein paragenesis and textural variability. This provided information on gold deportment and allowed the identification of favourable host veins. Bulk sample material from different ore grade zones was also analysed. A comparison with the results of GE testing shows that positive upgrade results are produced by rocks with abundant veins, particularly those associated with potassic and/or white mica alteration. This work indicates upgrade response can be predicted from drill core using data collected by a combination of automated systems including hyperspectral data, XRF, and detailed drill core logging.

A distinct zonation occurs in the nature of submarine volcanic activity associated with westwards propagation of the Woodlark spreading system into continental crust. Olivine tholeiites (Type I MORB) flooring one spreading segment in the Eastern Sector of the Western Woodlark Basin are accompanied by more evolved "ferrobasalts". Basaltic andesites and Mg-poor andesite-dacites occur on axial and flanking seamounts respectively. In the Western Sector, Mg- and K-rich olivine andesites occur in a rift valley and on an axial seamount near the tip of the propMr/8 tig rift. Observed correlations between 6Sr ratios (0.7028-0.7041), REE patterns and K contents imply a complex petro- genesis with the relative importance of mantle heterogeneity and crustal contamination difficult to resolve.

The capabilities of the three 61R and one 81R Robbins Raiseborers currently in use at Mount Isa are defined. Their applications in the development of ventilation and hoisting shafts, orepasses, escape routes, fill passes etc. are described and possible future uses of these and newer raiseborers at Mount Isa are examined. Problems associated with the use of raiseborers, together with ways of overcoming them are discussed. The impact of raiseborers on the mining operation is assessed in terms of new approaches to design and development, safety, cost and manpower efficiencies.

The Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana started processing ore from the Nkran pit in January 2016 at a production nameplate of 3 Mt/a. The flowsheet is a conventional SAG, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) with gravity-gold and carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery. The nameplate production was comfortably achieved within 3 months, so much so, that it was clear the SABC circuit was capable of processing more than the downstream section of the plant. Consequently, a program of de-bottlenecking was initiated to rectify volumetric capacity constraints. This program was later referred to as ‘Project 5 Million’ (t/a) or P5M. Having completed the de-bottlenecking exercise, it became evident that the SABC circuit could not reach 5 Mt/a solely on hard rock from Nkran. The new challenge was therefore to increase the capacity of the milling circuit through a focused comminution initiative that would address the following: geometallurgical treatment plan; upfront fragmentation requirements; installation of feed and mill monitoring equipment; and integration of a knowledge-based control strategy. This paper takes the reader through the various measures implemented to increase the milling rates and to create a stable/ sustainable control philosophy. As a result of the implementation of advanced mill performance monitoring technology (MillSlicer) and the collaboration between a team of experts in comminution, control and operations, the Asanko Gold Mine process plant feed tonnage has successfully increased from 3 Mt/a to 5 Mt/a.CITATION:Bradford, R, Gift-Agbey, W, Grobler, E, Morgan, P and Vorster, T, 2018. Hilton Mine is located 20 km north of the city of Mount Isa and Isa Mine in far north west Queensland. The sealed road used by the 500 employees to commute from the city is part of the Barkly Highway linking Mt Isa to the Northern Territory.Although discovered in 1947, major underground development did not start until late-1982 and first cut-and-fill production in mid-1987. The J53 exploration shaft was sunk in 1970-73 and the main P49 shaft in 1973-75. Since January 1990, most of Hilton ore production has been treated in the Hilton Concentrator, and concentrates trucked in slurry tankers to Isa for smelting or shipping.

Mineralogy and critically the texture of both the ore and gangue phases are of paramount importance in the flotation recovery of copper from porphyry ores. Mineralogy and texture will define the theoretical grade recovery curve for a feed ore. Actual grade-recovery falling below this may be due to texture and gangue influences, whilst desired grade-recovery above this line will not be possible unless the characteristics of the feed are altered.This review discusses examples of porphyry copper deposits where process mineralogy has been used to characterise these textural and gangue influences on recovery by flotation. More specifically, the influence exerted by grain size, liberation, association and elemental distribution is explored. From December 2013 to February 2014 the Southern Middleback Ranges magnetite concentrator went through a successful optimisation process that included the installation of extra grinding power to treat a wider range of ore types. After the initial improvements, sampling surveys were conducted to identify the mineral deportment through the concentrator. Samples collected during the survey were analysed using X-ray fluorescence, quantitative X-ray diffraction and QEMSCAN™ to cross-validate the analysis. Certain streams were also put through a laboratory-scale Davis Tube Recovery washing process to produce clean concentrates for analysis. The QEMSCAN™ analysis identified various metallurgical characteristics (mineral association, particle sizes, grain sizes, particle densities, etc) and these were evaluated for each separation and comminution stage to both understand the processes involved and identify opportunities for improvement. Key findings from the investigation indicated the importance of understanding the elemental deportment of target elements throughout the various minerals. The standard practice of tracking iron deportment through assay provided misleading results on losses to tail through the plant. The investigation provided insight into both wanted and unwanted minerals and the efficiency of each separation stage. The efficiencies of separation are critical due to their impact on downstream capacity, and the investigation provided insight into where opportunities exist to extract more benefit. The findings of the geometallurgical analysis have been implemented on the concentrator, and improvements in the rejection of non-magnetic minerals have been seen.CITATION:Gerber, J, Stanton, C and Olwagen, D, 2015. A reconstructed landscape may exert long-term influences on its surrounds and behave in ways that may not be predictable given uncertainties regarding climate, soil and vegetation interactions (Evans, 2000). In recent years, computer-based landscape evolution models (LEM) have been used to assess potential and existing mining landscapes and their long-term geomorphic behaviour (Hancock et al, 2007; Hancock, Lowry and Coulthard, 2015; Tucker and Hancock, 2010).In this paper, we focus on the evolution of post-mining landforms, which are designed to include burial or encapsulation of mine-impacted areas and materials, including tailings, drains, spoil tips and other industrial architecture (Figure 1). At the Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Territory of Australia, low-grade uranium ore, tailings, brines and other mine wastes will be buried at depth in the areas of the former pits and tailings storage facilities.The use of LEMs to predict long-term landscape evolution has several issues. These include that model predictions are based on the calibration and parameterisation of the model carried out using values determined from present day, or recent surface conditions. Furthermore, there is also the question as to how subtle perturbations or roughness on the DEM surface can produce alternative model results by randomly varying the elevations of the DEM surface.In this study we examine the effect on sediment transport rates and geomorphology for a proposed rehabilitated landform using multiple landscape realisations with increasing magnitudes of random changes in the DEM using the SIBERIA LEM (Willgoose, Bras and Rodriguez-Iturbe, 1991).CITATION:Hancock, G R, Coulthard, T J and Lowry, J B C, 2016. Maps of mineral grade used to assess mineral reserves are most commonly generated using one of the many estimation methods available such as inverse distance weighting or ordinary kriging. Most such maps incorporate a degree of spatial smoothing which is an integral part of the averaging process. In deposits with highly variable grade which include many gold deposits, this smoothing can mask the detailed geometry of the mineralization at the economic cutoff grades being considered. In underground mining, a knowledge of this geometry is important in the choice of mining method and thus in the assessment of the minable reserves.The method of conditional simulation in geostatistics can be used to generate maps of grade which reflect the actual spatial variability of grade as measured through the variograms of the drill hole data. Simulated maps can provide a number of equiprobable images of the mineralization geometry from which a more appropriate mining model of the mineralization can be developed. Multiple simulations can also be used to assess the uncertainty existing in the current knowledge of the reserves.

A structural study of northwest Fergusson Island, part of the D'Entrecasteaux Group, was undertaken using colour and monochrome aerial photography and Landsat imagery. The resulting interpretation shows an upstanding, in part, dome-like metamorphic core complex, which is bound on three sides by an en echelon series of low-angle, thrust faults. Faceted gneissic layers occur throughout the complex. These facets are triangular in plan view and range in size from a few tens of metres, to massive composite zones which traverse the entire uplifted zone, The lower surface of each of the facets are, in fact, low-angle decollements which, during uplift, slid one upon the other to accommodate the vertical and extensional movements. As a consequence, deep structural valleys developed which widen towards the zone of maximum uplift. In many places, recognisable topographic features are replicated on both sides of these valleys, and under the stereoscope can be visually reconstructed to their original pre break-up positions. The southern margin of the core complex is less dome-like and falls away, via a series of deeply-entrenched structural valleys, towards a volcano-studded lowland. The lowland appears to belong to a rift or arm, stemming from the more southerly located Goodenough Bay Infrabasin.

The large, low grade, Kidston Gold Mine in North Queensland has achieved outstanding economies of scale and profitability. The total mineable ore reserve including mined to-date (as at December 1993) was 70.75 million tonnes at 1.54 grams gold per tonne. After nine years of mining, grade control mine production routinely reconciles against mill production and ore reserves to within five per cent of contained gold. The grade control system developed at Kidston is examined in detail, with emphasis on the geological thinking behind the strategies, as well as the development and application of a computerised, graphical production control and reporting system. Reconciliation procedures and results are explained, illustrating the success of geostatistical methods, as a risk management tool, in both ore reserves and production grade control.
