The principles, fields of application and equipment design concepts of several new approaches to continuous vacuum treatments of molten metals and alloys are discussed. Partic- ular attention is paid to the results of pilot plant tests evaluating a launder-in-tube method of 1. continuous production of refined zinc from a zinc-bearing lead produced in the lead splash condenser of the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF), and 2. continuous refining of crude cadmium. The former trials were not sufficiently encouraging to justify consideration of the process for commercial development. The applic- ation to cadmium upgrading gave very promising results; metal of 99.99 per cent purity was produced continuously at pilot scale (120 lb per hour) from crude metal containing 5.0 per cent Pb.

"This paper is focused on blasting activities undertaken as part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade – Tintenbar to Ewingsdale – project (T2E). This is a ‘priority 1’ Pacific Highway road construction project in New South Wales (NSW), to be completed by mid-2015 (weather permitting). T2E will provide approximately 17 km of dual carriageway road starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange, and will complete the existing dual carriageway road between Ballina and the NSW/Queensland border.Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the project on behalf of the NSW state and federal governments. In October 2011, RMS awarded a contract to Baulderstone Pty Ltd (now Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd – Lend Lease) to design and construct T2E. One of the key elements in this project is the St Helena Tunnel.In order to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill, eliminate a well-known accident black spot and maintain the aesthetics of the Byron hinterland escarpment, RMS and Lend Lease prepared designs to construct a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel, 46 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill. Lend Lease elected, where geotechnical conditions permitted, to use drill and blast methods to excavate the full tunnel profile, instead of traditional mechanical excavation techniques.Since all blasting locations (both inside and outside the tunnel) were in close proximity to nearby residents, the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure imposed strict air blast overpressure (airblast), ground vibration (vibration) limits and limited working hours. Both RMS and Lend Lease recognised that these restrictions meant that nearby residents may be exposed to blasting activities for longer than was necessary. As a result, after close consultation and agreement with the nearby residents, RMS applied successfully to the NSW Department of Planning to increase the airblast and vibration limits, as well as the working hours.Working under these new conditions, Lend Lease employed a range of best practice drill and blast technologies provided by both Orica Australia Pty Ltd and Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation to improve the safety and efficiency of blasting activities and to minimise the potential negative impacts of the blasting works on affected residents. These technologies included: the use of a continuous environmental monitoring system to record the results of the blast events and provide quick and easy reporting to key stakeholders to address RMS specification requirements electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to give project engineers the flexibility and precision to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face the use of two software programs and advanced drill rigs to enable the efficient design of blasts, electronic transfer of designs to the drill rigs, as well as in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation, and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes, to reduce overbreak and deliver a cleaner profile.By taking a progressive approach towards the environmental restrictions and the work hours imposed, as well as utilising best practice blasting techniques, RMS and Lend Lease were able to blast with confidence and achieve their production deadlines and reduce the total cost of the project.Most importantly, RMS and Lend Lease were able to meet their environmental obligations and work constructively with the nearby residents to ensure that the blasting was undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible without delay or negative impact.CITATION:Dowling, M, Domotor, R and Miller, D, 2014. "To provide an indication of expected performance of the mine and mill, feasibility studies should include an assessment of the expected day-to-day variability in process plant feed. Attempts to do this based on conventional resource models will be flawed as such studies fail to consider and account for the in-built smoothing (averaging) of input data.This can lead to one of two situations: an expensive, over-engineered process plant that can cope with every possible situation, or operational strategies that fail to manage the natural variability within the orebody and the impact of day-to-day operational decision-making.In both cases the value of the project diminishes through excessive capital costs or reduced throughput or recovery during operations.Unlike conventional estimation techniques, the geostatistical method of conditional simulation can reproduce the inherent variability of the deposit. Once a valid model has been developed, it is possible to analyse the model using a transfer function that simulates the proposed mining processes and provides a representation of the likely variation of mill feed characteristics at any time scale.The case study demonstrates how the proposed mining strategy would result in mill feed being considerably more variable than expected, resulting in poor recovery, low throughput and potential breaches of environmental conditions. Mitigation measures included budgeting for additional mining equipment to enable greater flexibility during mining and revised stockpiling and crusher feed strategies.Awareness of the benefits of modelling the variability of geometallurgical parameters will increase the use of this approach in producing more realistic financial models of expected mine performance at the design stage.CITATION:Shaw, W J, Khosrowshahi, S and Weeks, A, 2013. About 3km2 of the central Luise Caldera, in which the Lihir orebody is located, is geothermally active wit.lj gas seeps and fumaroles, and in some areas, a water table at boiling point.The proposed mine, adjacent to Luise Harbor, will be excavated to more than 200m below sea level and will extend into the geothermal system to depths at which current rock temperatures are 170¦C.

New Caledonia is a major metallogenic unit of the south-western Pacific Rim. Its mineral production is of world significance and it has an unusually well diversified mining history. New Caledonia's main metallogenetic potential is, however, associated with its unique ophiolitic complex and its important mineral- izations of nickel, chrome, cobalt and iron. Gold has been found in all the four basic tectonic elements of New Caledonia: the Central Massif, the West Coast basalts, the ophiolitic complex and the Caledonian North. Some analogies are attempted. Only the Caledonian North has supported mining operations (213 kg Au). More recently tenuous gold indications have been found within the ophiolitic complex, possibly associated with Oligocene plutonism.

In the process of primary copper smelting in flash smelting furnace (FSF), the ratio of iron to silica (Fe/SiO2 mass ratio) primarily determines the slag viscosity and magnetite formation. Viscous slag does not only cause difficulties in daily operation, such as in tapping, it also increases the copper losses to slag. Thus, keeping the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio at the desired level is an important aspect of FSF and slag cleaning furnace (SCF) operation. In this study, the improvement of the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio was conducted in two steps: First, the optimal Fe/SiO2 mass ratio was derived based on thermodynamic data. Based on this analysis, appropriate control limits were determined. Second, this range of favourable Fe/SiO2 mass ratios was implemented into operation by an advice-based control system, which suggests the addition of silica based on the analysis of SCF slag. As this approach was successful, the same advice-based control system principle was adapted for the coke addition to the SCF. After testing the new advice-based control for several months, the production data confirm the predictions by thermodynamics: since the prediction was implemented as an advisor, the copper and magnetite content in SCF slag is significantly reduced and viscous slag is reported less often by operations.

"An Outotec e500 TankCell, with 500 m³ of actual flotation volume, was commissioned at the Kevitsa Cu-Ni-PGE concentrator in northern Finland during 2014. This flotation cell was implemented at the head of the existing copper circuit as the first Cu rougher flotation cell. This was the first flotation cell of this size to be run under production conditions by any supplier anywhere in the world.The cell has been in continuous operation since start-up in October 2014 and has provided improvements in metallurgical performance at very low specific power consumption. On average, the cell has recovered 71 per cent of copper contained in the 0.37 per cent Cu flotation feed at a concentrate grade of 17 per cent Cu. The specific power consumption for the cell (excluding blower power) is typically around 0.4 kW/m³.After start-up, the impeller speed and superficial gas velocity were varied and the impact on metallurgical performance measured. In this paper a review of the cell operation at Kevitsa is given. To solve the mining safety and health needs of the future, access to, and sharing of, timely and relevant information will be crucial. The next generation of the Web will provide tools (RDF, OWL, SPARQL, etc) to define and link content for more effective discovery, integration, and reuse across applications and organisations. A recent Gartner Research Report (Finding and exploiting value in Semantic Web technologies on the web, May 2007) predicts these technologies will begin to coalesce in ten years. Implementing this Semantic Web requires structured web content described via metadata (information about information). If an industry or enterprise bases its metadata on a common vocabulary, it becomes possible to share and reuse information. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and HealthÆs (NIOSH) Mining web site provides access to more than 1500 NIOSH-developed publications, products, and topic pages on issues as diverse as ground control, respiratory diseases, and mine emergency management. As the site has grown, locating content has become increasingly difficult. To improve the searching process, a panel of internal experts representing all major research programs was established to develop a controlled vocabulary for indexing that content. The outcome is the NIOSH Mining Safety and Health Thesaurus, a faceted, hierarchical thesaurus containing hundreds of mining safety and health terms organised into 20 facets (eg diseases, injuries and disorders; hazardous events and exposures, equipment, engineering and administrative controls). One immediate goal of this project is to reduce the complexity of locating information on the NIOSH Mining web site by implementing metadata and faceted information retrieval techniques. Another goal is to stimulate discussion in the international mining community regarding developing metadata standards so the industry is ready to adopt future Semantic Web technologies to improve access to mining safety and health information.

Toughness testing of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) at 28 days age is typically undertaken as part of quality control for the many applications where fibres are used in concrete, including shotcrete, tunnel segments, and cast-in-place tunnel linings. The performance achieved at 28 days is usually assumed to be retained with increasing age. However, as the average strength grade of concrete used in most tunnelling applications, including tunnel segments, has steadily increased over the last 20 years, this assumption is becoming increasingly unviable. This is because for some types of fibre the mode of post-crack fibre behaviour depends on the strength of the concrete and can change from a desirable high-energy pull-out mode to a low-energy rupture mode as the strength and age of concrete increases. This paper describes a series of trials performed over two years in which the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C1609/C1609M beam tests were used to assess the performance of FRC reinforced with two widely used brands of steel and macro-synthetic fibre. The hooked-end steel fibres used for half the beams exhibited a dramatic fall in performance beyond 56 days age as the mode of failure changed from pull-out to rupture. The other fibre did not exhibit a fall in performance with age. This phenomenon highlights the need to quantify performance of FRC at much later ages when long-term performance is required, for example, to resist seismic events or changes in ground stress due to nearby excavations. As an alternative, a reduction factor may be applied to the performance of FRC mixes for which evidence of satisfactory long-term performance is not?available.CITATION:Bernard, E S, 2014. The U. S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines, in conjunction with a cooperator in the U. S. A., are developing a new highwall mining system (HMS) for coal extraction in unreclaimed and active contour strip mines. This prototype system is comprised of a computer-based remote control (CBRC) system to monitor and remotely control a thin-seam continuous miner (TSCM) and a 76*m long multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) conveying system, plus other manually- operated support equipment located on the highwall bench. The TSCM and MUCH coal haulage system are both controlled remotely by a single operator in a protective enclosure at an ergonomically- designed workstation located on the highwall bench. Two other personnel work on the bench to operate other support equipment. Full-scale mock-up fabrications were employed in the design of the unique remote control operator workstation. The HMS should allow the safe and economical exploitation of increased coal reserves where they outcrop in hilly regions of the United States. It should also be competitive with conventional auger mining and other coal extraction techniques, with a productivity goal at a highwall site of 20 tonne/man-h. Extensive simulated surface tests of the miner and haulage system should be completed in early 1988 at Bureau test facilities at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These will be followed by actual coal production trials of the entire system in 1988 at a highwall site in West Virginia/USA.

An unprecedented, quantitative, deposit-scale understanding of major clay mineral distribution throughout the Yeelirrie uranium deposit has been achieved by adapting the existing HyLogger™/HyChips™ analytical technique to measure resource assay pulps. Spectral analysis via HyLogger™ and HyChips™ systems has previously been used as a small-scale geometallurgical research tool, but never before has it been quantitatively applied to an entire resource sample population for the purpose of developing stand alone block models for major clay minerals. Economic uranium mineralisation within the thin but extensive Yeelirrie?palaeochannel?primarily exists within the transition zone between a groundwater-derived calcrete and the underlying clay-quartz regolith. Early geometallurgical investigations identified that certain clay minerals could be deleterious to the efficiency of the uranium recovery process. Accurate calculation of clay mineralogy from resource assays proved too difficult due to chemical similarities between co-existing kaolinite, smectite and magnesium carbonate minerals. A relatively low-cost, efficient and accurate method of quantitative clay mineral analysis was required to measure over 70 000 resource assay pulps. After initial testing and comparison with QXRD, the HyChips™ 3-1 spectral logging system was implemented as a primary method of clay mineral analysis for the Yeelirrie uranium deposit. The resultant spatial data set allowed the interpretation and geostatistical analysis of geometallurgical domains across the deposit. Clay block models were generated and used in geometallurgical resource calculations to benefit the mine planning process.

An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

Gallium occurs at above background levels in most samples collected from 11 of the major geothermal areas in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Concentrations of Ga in the 48 samples ranged from 8 to 144 mg kg-' and varies widely from place to place within each geothermal area. Gallium is contained within the alumino-silicate structure of clay in the mud, having substituted mainly for Al. Suggested deposition mechanisms for Ga also involve co-precipitation with Sb, As, and SiO. colloids. Digestion trials, carried out to determine extraction conditions for possible commercial exploitation, showed that heating the mud to 500 -600¦C for 1 hour followed by acid/alkali treatment gave complete recoveries.

The B.R.G.M., through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the B.R.G.M. have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment,. some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and -its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consider- ation of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of "mineral-geochemistry", and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

Recent geological mapping has indicated changes to the stratigraphy of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The new stratigraphy and interpreted depositional environments are examined in relation to the distribution and genesis of stratabound mineral deposits. Basinward correlations are made with near-shore carbonate and psammite-rudite units in the Rum Jungle region. Most other units in the same region are condensed, indicating long- lived supratidal, intertidal or shallow conditions during most of the depositional cycle. Units containing most of the mineralisation represent the earliest near-shore developments of strongly reducing partly pelitic and evaporitic conditions and contain mainly uranium and base metals. Restricted distal, strongly reducing facies with associated felsic volcanics are also well mineralised, and mainly contain gold, silver and base metals, although some deposits are probably genetically related to synorogenic or postorogenic granites. Mineralisation in other facies is almost all epigenetic hydrothermal in origin, although minor mineralisation is related to volcanics, or dolomitic parts of the sequence. Areas of potential mineralisation include near-shore environments in the north, and carbonate reefs along growth faults. Two suites of postorogenic felsic volcanics and related sediments deposited in shallow water within and around northwest and east-northeast rift systems, overlie the metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline in the south. The suites have potential for volcanogenic deposits, mostly of uranium, gold and copper.

Gold mineralisation at Bendigo is exclusively associated with quartz reefs, commonly found within or near anticlinal fold hinges. The gold is typically coarse grained (0.5 mm to 5 mm), free milling and displays a complex, nuggetty distribution within the veins. This ore is highly amenable to gravity recovery processes. As the Bendigo operation is not permitted to treat whole ore by a cyanide leach/CIL circuit, the flow sheet is more complex than conventional gold recovery circuits. Primary gold recovery is from a gravity circuit closing the grinding circuit to a bulk gravity concentrate and from a flotation circuit treating cyclone overflow to a bulk float concentrate. The plant capacity is relatively low by current gold industry standards at 600 000 tpa. Re-establishing gold production at Bendigo has presented several challenging, and sometimes competing, issues in process design and operation. The mine, process plant, associated services and infrastructure are at Kangaroo Flat, a low density, semi-rural zone in the southern urbanisation of the Bendigo metropolitan area. One of the main processing challenges during the design was the competing comminution requirement to avoid over-grinding, which would flatten or smear the characteristic nugget gold and hinder effective gravity gold recovery, whilst also providing sufficiently well liberated particles that would respond well to flotation. Important, non-metallurgical challenges were to minimise impacts on the local community from noise, dust, air emissions, visual impact, water egress and off-site traffic.

One of the most difficult places to ventil ate in any mine is the working face area of an advancing mine heading. With an ever changing configuration, continual modification and extension to the ventilation system is necess- ary to maintain an adequate supply of fresh air and to control mixing and recirculation. Methane emissions and high dust levels as coal is broken and removed from the face area can produce unhealthy and dangerous conditions if ventilat- ion is not adequately monitored. An understanding of the air flow patterns which develop through use of different face ven- tilation systems can be reached by undertaking underground measurements or through observations using physical models. Tests undertaken by the author to determine the adequacy of different system-configurations are discussed together with approaches adopted by others working in the United States. Various new methods have been proposed for improving face ventilation beyond that sustained using conventional brattice curtain or tubing systems. The adequacy of some advances adopted by mining companies to improve ventilation while maintaining output efficiency is discussed.

The load capacity of a friction bolt has long been regarded as 4 t/m of embedment for ground support design analysis and supported by in situ pull test results. In recent years, the authors have observed lower pull test results or inconsistent results which were rarely sighted in the early 2000s. The lower pull test results indicated in some cases that reliable friction bolt capacity (≥90 per cent of results) is closer to 3 t/m of embedment with some geotechnical engineers adjusting the ground support parameters in the design work accordingly. This can be in contrast with other mines which reliably obtain 4 t/m (or greater) using the same suppliers bolt in similar ground conditions. This raised several questions: • What is the effect of poor installation (bolt twist or bolt hole deviation)? • Does the performance of friction bolts vary in different rock masses? • Does bolt performance vary between suppliers? • What effect does increased jumbo feed/percussion/rotation settings have? • Have the bolt dimensions or steel strip width changed? • Have the physical bolt properties changed? • Have the steel properties changed? This paper was aimed to answer as many of these questions as possible and discuss each variable in detail. This project included friction bolt trials at various mine sites across Australia, multiple friction bolt manufacturers, steel manufacturers and laboratory analysis. The paper also includes discussion on what the authors consider best practice for pull testing. It should be noted, the terms ‘friction stabiliser’ and ‘split set’ used in this paper are used in a generic manner and is not linked to any specific ground support supplier. Whilst its acknowledged within the industry the term split set and friction stabiliser is used interchangeably, the authors acknowledge that the term split set is a trademark of Split Set Mining Systems and has been used in context in this paper.

Mining had a very considerable effect on the country's development. The visual evidence remaining is an integral part of New Zealand history. Early mining for manganese and copper in the 1840s was succeeded by alluvial gold rushes. These gave way to hard rock extraction, hydraulic elevation and dredging. Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining' machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.
